Marline Joyce Amerine, 85, passed away July 29, 2023, at her home in Hoisington. She was born Dec. 8, 1937, at Nowata, Okla. to Charles and Ada (Adamson) Branham. She married Richard E. Amerine on Feb. 6, 1955, at Beaver.

A longtime area resident, Marline worked for Goss Insurance Agency and most recently worked for State Farm Insurance. She was a member of New Life Baptist Church, Hoisington, and the Heritage Club. However, one of her greatest joys came from sharing her banana bread with her family and many friends. She also loved her title of "The Piano Grandma" to Richard's students.

Survivors include, her husband, Richard E. Amerine of the home; two sons, Jeff Amerine and wife Leslie of Alabama, and Darren Amerine of Hoisington; a daughter, Chris Bitter and husband Mark of Great Bend; nine grandchildren, Cori Miller, Lacey Bonine (Dave), Klint Bitter, Lyndee McClung (Chase), Kayla Tucker (Garrett), Adam Amerine (Kyirsten), Joshua Amerine (Sara), Taylor Amerine and Jacob Amerine; 18 great-grandchildren, Madalyn Bonine, Alexander Bonine, Cora Bitter, Brynn Bitter, Ellie Bitter, Kamryn McClung, Elijah McClung, Jack Lawson, Beckett Tucker, Max Amerine, Eli Amerine, Zane Amerine, Zoey Amerine, Cadence Amerine, Grace Amerine, Landon Amerine, Noah Amerine, and Allison Amerine; a sister in law, Darlene Branham of Great Bend; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter, Sherie Amerine; two brothers, Donnie Branham and Jerry Branham; two sisters in law, Linda Branham and Joyce (Amerine) Saelens; an infant granddaughter, Tara Amerine; a grandson in law, Roch Miller; and great-grandson, Aiden Amerine.

Marline Amerine, age 85

Howard Wayne Lindberg, 78, passed away Aug. 8, 2023, at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, Hutchinson. He was born Dec. 30, 1944, in Great Bend, to Ernest and Lucile (Weathers) Lindberg. He married Karen (Rinker) Lindholm on Nov. 6, 1986, in Great Bend.

At the age of nine, Howard and his brother Jerry were the first of three in Great Bend to get polio in the early 1950’s. In high school he worked for Robert Weaver at his Veterinary Clinic and summers working with his Uncle Elmo Weathers on the farm. Howard attended Hutchinson Community College and graduated from Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration in 1966. He moved to Emporia, working for Hershel Shepherd, an old Army buddy of his Dad’s, first in the office at S &amp; S Oil and Propane and then at the family-owned Admire State Bank. He was Personnel Officer for the City of Emporia for 7.5 years before moving back to Great Bend. In Great Bend, Howard was City Clerk (1979 – 1985), and also worked at CPI and as the Oil/Gas Appraiser for Barton County before retiring in June of 2010. In retirement, he worked part-time as a driver for Sunflower Diversified Services.

Howard was an active member of the Great Bend Optimist Club, Lake Barton Golf Club and Barton County Historical Society. He was a former President of the City Clerks and Municipal Finance Officers Association of Kansas and former Director of the International Institute of Municipal Clerks. He loved to golf and enjoyed spending time with family. Howard organized the Lindberg cousins’ reunions and was proud of his family’s Swedish heritage. A trip of a lifetime was a cruise with Karen and several cousins to Alaska in 2012.

Survivors include, his wife, Karen Lindberg of the home; a son, Aron Lindberg of Great Bend; a daughter, Shawna Walker and husband Rodney of Pratt; two stepsons, Greg Lindholm and wife Tamara of McPherson and Doug Lindholm and wife Gina of Thornton, Colo.; a sister, Nancy Lindberg of Topeka; three grandchildren, Taylor Lindberg, Hunter Walker (Destiny) and Conner Walker; and five step-grandchildren, Aden Lindholm (Asha), Anna van Asselt (Kerrick), Chris Lindholm (Anna), Josh Lindholm (Abbey) and Nick Lindholm. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Jerry Lindberg; and step-daughter-in-law, Keri Lindholm.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 26, 2023, at Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, with the Reverend Kathleen Luke presiding.

Howard Lindberg, age 78

Elmer Lawrence Rowe, 89, passed away on August 10, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, He was born on July 10, 1934. Elmer was married to Mary Ann Augustine for “47 years” before her passing over 30 years ago.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Elmer was a jack of all trades. He spent many years working as a dishwasher. Elmer was a member of the First Bible Baptist Church and being a “western man”, loved horses.

Survivors include four sons, Kenneth Rowe, Charles Rowe, William Rowe, and John McGuire; a daughter, Connie (Jose) Montelongo of Hoisington, Kansas; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; multiple siblings; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and two sons, Ronald McGuire and William McGuire.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be planned at a later date. Memorials have been designated to the Elmer Rowe Expense Fund, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Lisa Anne Jones, 56, passed away on August 9, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi – St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas. She was born on January 21, 1967, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Bill and Mary (Cook) Jones.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Lisa was a graduate of Great Bend High School and Barton Community College. She worked as a secretary of KMW Front End Loaders. Lisa was a member of the First Christian Church, enjoyed reading and watching T.V., and loved her pets, especially her chihuahua, Annie.

Survivors include her mother, Mary, of Great Bend; a brother, Don (Brenda) Jones of Great Bend; two sisters, Karen (Dennis) Hickel and Kathy (Dwight) Tittel, all of Great Bend; a nephew, William Jones of Great Bend; two nieces, Julietha and Sarah Jones, both of Great Bend; an aunt, Juanita Thomas of Edgerton, Missouri; and numerous cousins. She was preceded in death by her father; aunt, Velda Roberts; uncle, Clarence Cook; and cousin, Jeffery Roberts.

While Lisa may have been taken from us too soon, she shared her gift of life through her ability to be an organ donor.

Lisa Jones, age 56

MaryBeth Higgins, 78, died August 5, 2023, at her home in Hoisington. She was born December 31, 1944, in Hays, Kansas, the daughter of Warren E. and Margaret L. (Walters) Moore. MaryBeth graduated from La Crosse High School in 1962.

On May 8, 1965, she married Robert C. Higgins in La Crosse, Kansas.

MaryBeth worked for the ASCS/USDA, beginning in La Crosse in 1978 and transferring to Great Bend where she retired in May 2007. MaryBeth was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church of Hoisington and a member of the Altar Society. She was a former member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church and Altar Society of La Crosse. A breast cancer survivor, MaryBeth was active in the Breast Friends Cancer Support Group and the Alzheimer’s Support Group. She was an avid reader often seen sitting on her porch with a book in her hand. Come basketball season though she would be cheering on her favorite Kansas Jayhawks.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Robert C. Higgins of the home; son, Timothy Higgins and wife Nicole of Hoisington; daughter, Rebecca DuVall and husband Harry of Olathe; brother, Richard Moore of Albert; sisters, Vickie Barr, and Shari Johnson, both of Topeka, and Terri J. Gray of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and her three beloved grandchildren, Lauren and Thomas Higgins of Hoisington, and Mallory DuVall and significant other Nick Pecina of Kansas City; and four great grandchildren, Harrison, Amelia, Baker and Charlee.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

MaryBeth Higgins, age 78

Gary Lee McDonald, 82, passed away August 2, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays, Kan. He was born May 9, 1941, to Maurice and Hazel (Herter) McDonald, in Great Bend. He married Judy Klapp March 7, 1973, in Ellinwood. She died June 19, 2019.

A lifetime area resident, Gary was the Electrical Production Foreman for the City of Ellinwood for 29 years until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood and a former member of United Church of Christ in Ellinwood. Gary enjoyed playing the guitar, watching westerns and cooking shows, always trying out the skills and dishes he learned. He loved to collect trains, and also enjoyed NRHA and NASCAR.

Survivors include, two daughters, Teresa Ensminger Grubb and husband James of Ellinwood, and Christina Rowell and husband Jim of Great Bend; and three grandchildren, Gary Grubb, Judy Grubb and Emily Rowell. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Judy; and an infant sister, Marie McDonald.

Gary McDonald, age 82

Arnold L. “Arnie” Ochs, 93, Otis, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.

Arnold was born April 19, 1930, in rural Otis, Kansas, the son of Jacob H. and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Ochs. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1948 graduate of Otis Rural High School, Otis, Kansas, he was a shop foreman/mechanic for Ochs Inc., Otis, Kansas, before his retirement.

He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Otis, Kansas, and a VFW member.

He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean War as a mechanic in the motor pool.

Arnold was a “car guy” his whole life, always working on, and selling and buying cars. He bowled in a bowling league for many years.

Survivors include: many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clarence E. Ochs, Arthur C. Ochs, and Wilmer T. Ochs; and two sisters, Esther Dumler, and Hilda F. Deines.

Visitation will be Monday, August 7, 2023, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Tuesday, August 8, 2023, from 9:00 A.M. to 9:50 A.M. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas.

Arnold L. “Arnie” Ochs, 93, Otis, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, La Crosse, Kansas.Arnold was born April 19, 1930, in rural Otis, Kansas, the son of Jacob H. and Elizabeth (Kaiser) Ochs. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1948 graduate of Otis Rural High School, Otis, Kansas, he was a shop foreman/mechanic for Ochs Inc., Otis, Kansas, before his retirement.He was a lifetime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, Kansas, a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Council, Otis, Kansas, and a VFW member.He was a United States Army veteran, serving during the Korean War as a mechanic in the motor pool.Arnold was a “car guy” his whole life, always working on, and selling and buying cars. Arnold 'Arnie' Ochs, age 93

Daniel David DeWitt, 59, passed away August 3, 2023, at his home in Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on July 20, 1964, in Hays, Kansas, to Donald and Marth (Triebel) DeWitt.

Dan grew up in and graduated from Concordia, Kansas, later moving to Coffeyville, Kansas, then to Hoisington, Kansas, where he lived for several years. Dan enjoyed participating in Special Olympics in Concordia and Great Bend.

He also enjoyed spending time with his big family at the many family reunions. Dan liked fishing, playing cards, and horseshoes.

Dan is survived by three brothers, Ed (Judy) DeWitt of Hesston, Kansas, Vern DeWitt of Coffeyville, Kansas, and Gene DeWitt of Pensacola, Florida; three sisters, Deb (Jerry) Davis of Hoisington, Kansas, Ruby (Randy) Barnes of Independence, Kansas, and Susan Sisco of Nowata, Oklahoma; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Cremation has taken place with Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

Daniel DeWitt, age 59

James C. “JC” Underwood, moved to heaven Aug. 2, 2023, at age 80. He was born July 5, 1943, to Spencer E. and Harriett C. (Hawk) Underwood in Atchison. He understood working for a wage at an early age and bought his first car at age 12. He became a United States Navy Reserve during his high school years. After graduating from Wyandotte High School, Kansas City, in 1961, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He married Doris Jo Rush on Oct. 3, 1966, in Severance. The couple made their first home in Kansas City, Kan.

JC completed his United States Navy service in 1966 and worked a short stint at TWA while reenlisting in the military, this time United States Air Force. Following his military service, he worked for Ford Motor Company in Kansas City and started his own country living in rural Cameron, Mo. He bought his uncle’s sale barn in the late 1970s and this is where his passion for leather began. By 1981, he opened his own tack shop, J.J. Western, and began leather making, his newfound love. He repaired boots and saddles and began manufacturing his own tack inventory.

His desire to serve people extended throughout life. He was a volunteer fireman, worked on special forces for the police department, and became an EMT. He kept current on his EMT training with ambulances in Wichita, and volunteered EMT services in Kiowa County. He loved to study law and used his knowledge to help others. He volunteered at the Central Kansas Dream Center to help keep the pantry stocked and organized. He was a member of Faith Community Church in Great Bend.

After 40 years, JC retired as a saddle maker in 2021, and moved from Mullinville to Great Bend, where he was closer to his family. He enjoyed fishing and telling stories.

He was proud of his family and leaves behind, his wife, Doris; one daughter, Heidi Jo (Keith) Burton of Great Bend; one son, Joseph E. “Joe” (Laura) Underwood of Vanleer, Tenn; seven grandchildren, Valerie Morrell (Matt Seidel) of Pratt, Lucas (Janine) Burton of Ellinwood, Jeffrey C. “JC” (Jonna) Bosch and Corbin J. (Rachel Wiehl) Burton all of Heizer, Kara A. (Brenner) Gentry of Dickson, Tenn., and Katelyn Jo Underwood and Sara J. Underwood both of Vanleer, Tenn.; five great-grandchildren, Makayla, Lilly and Kaydalyn Burton, Arley Morrell, Colson James Bosch and Blake Bosch; a sister, Ann E. Perkins of Modesto, Calif.; a brother, Perry H. (Josie) Underwood of Prairie Village; and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ruby Jane Eppes from Yellville, Ark.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Family and friends will also gather at the funeral home prior to the graveside service, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday. James 'JC' Underwood, age 80

Denton Ralph “Rip” Schlegel, 78, passed away on July 31, 2023, at Azria Health, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on June 20, 1945, at Hoisington, Kansas, to Ralph &amp; Carrie (Gustin) Schlegel. On October 27, 1973, he married Linda Monroe at Hoisington, Kansas. She died November 28, 2010.

Mr. Schlegel was a lifetime resident of Barton County. He was a 1963 graduate of Otis High School. During his time in high school, he earned the nickname “Rip” for how he would rip the nets from basketball goals and make three-point shots before they were a common shot made. Denton worked as a machinist at Great Bend Industries for over 30 years. When he wasn’t mowing yards or being directed in life by Linda and Glen, he enjoyed polka dances and loved going to Las Vegas.

Survivors include sister-in-law, Jeannette (Ken) Clark of Shawnee; nieces and nephews; and many friends.

Denton is preceded in death by his wife; brother and sister-in-law, Curtis and Wanda Schlegel; his parents; and his parents-in-law, Glen and Rosemary Monroe

Billy George Akin-Summers, age 59 of Garfield, Kansas passed away on Saturday evening, July 29, 2023 at his home after a long battle with COPD and Congestive Heart Failure.&nbsp; Billy was born on October 31, 1963 to Elvis McFarland and Loretta Yocham in Vian, Oklahoma.&nbsp; His mother later married Elmer Akin, who adopted Billy.&nbsp; Billy belonged to a large family of 12 sisters and 8 brothers:&nbsp; Marylou, John, and James (&amp; Leslie) of Arkansas; Gladys, Edna (&amp; Jim), Tracy, Doug (&amp; Lori), and Les of Kansas; Betty (&amp; Dan), Bea (&amp; Neev), Ethel, Lisa (&amp; John), Don, and Jesse (&amp; Kim) of Oklahoma.

&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy made a living by hanging drywall, roofing, and did some truck driving. He was known to be a jokester and often made up names to make you laugh.

Billy married Sandra Hill in 1992.&nbsp; In July of 1992 they welcomed a daughter Sandeana. As years passed, they later divorced.

In 2008, Billy and Susan started dating and later married on May 12, 2018 at Ottawa, Kansas. This marriage was blessed with four boys:&nbsp; Shawn, David, Jason, and Zackhary; and three brothers-in-law: Rick, Steve (&amp; Dena), and Chris (&amp; Clarissa).

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy has eighteen beautiful grandchildren:&nbsp; Cameron, Jordyn, Jolynn, Astrid, Jazzmine, Gavin, Jayden, Dayton, Dakota, Alexa, Kayleen, Jordan, Zayden, James, Jame-Lynn, Kayson, William and Asuna. Plus, there are many nieces and nephews. Billy was a big family man and loved them all. Billy also had three good friends he could count on in Loren, Jody, and Shelly.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Billy had a passion for writing songs, singing, and playing the guitar. He loved entertaining not only his family with his talent but would also go to the nursing homes and share his love for music with the elderly.&nbsp; Billy also enjoyed fishing and was a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan.&nbsp; One of his fondest memories is watching the Chiefs game with Sue, Zack, and Dakota and seeing who would cuss and scream the loudest.

Billy Akin-Summers, age 59

Gina Ann (Ellis) Gugins, age 49 years, of Kinsley and formerly of Great Bend, passed away in&nbsp; Haven on Thursday afternoon, July 27, 2023.&nbsp; Gina was born on June 24, 1974, in Great Bend to Gary Ray and Clara May (Roach) Ellis. She was a graduate of Great Bend High School and then went on to become a Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) and worked for a period of time at Cherry Village Long Term Care in Great Bend. She was united in marriage to Gary L. Gugins on May 22, 2010, in Great Bend. Gina loved baking cookies and candy, enjoyed surfing the Internet, and loved watching her purple martin birds outside her home. She also dearly loved her three dogs and her cat.

Survivors include her husband, Gary L. Gugins of Kinsley; her father Gary R. Ellis of Great Bend; two brothers:&nbsp; Brian and Brent Ellis, both of Great Bend; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother Clara May Ellis on Jan. 1, 2013.

David M. Crawford, Sr., age 69, lifelong Great Bend resident, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, July 25, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.&nbsp; David was born on Sept. 4, 1953, in Great Bend to Melva Jean and Andrew J. Crawford Sr., and graduated from Great Bend High School.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to Patricia Chain on Aug. 8, 2007, at Newkirk, Okla.&nbsp; David was self-employed as an appliance technician for many years. David Crawford, Sr., age 69

Morgan D. “Smitty” Smith, 92, passed away on July 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at Credo Senior Living, Hoisington, Kansas. He was born on January 2, 1931, in Lawton, Oklahoma, the son of John P. and Pauline (Swann) Smith.

On June 2, 1956, he married Norma L. Whitsel at First Christian Church in Great Bend, Kansas. She died October 20, 2021.

Mr. Smith was a resident of Hoisington for 60 years, coming from Lawton, Oklahoma, and Great Bend. He was the owner and operator of Smith Acid Company. Morgan was a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend and V.F.W. He enjoyed hunting, painting portraits and landscapes, tinkering with watches and guns, and gardening. His family was left with his many examples and lessons of the importance of a strong work ethic and a giving, charitable nature.

Survivors include five children, Michael D. (Debbie) Smith of Hoisington, Randall D. Smith of Fort Worth, Texas, Sabrina (Oscar) Mariño of Lawrence, Sonya (Wayde) Brozek of Wamego, and Kevin (Jennifer) Smith of Lee's Summit, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

He is preceded in death by his wife; Norma; his parents; and siblings, Gloria Guyselman, Marie Yarmuk, and Paul Smith.

Patricia Claire Burnett, 95, passed away July 28, 2023, at Rice County District Hospital, Lyons, Kan. She was born March 27, 1928, in St. Paul, Minn. to Fred and Barbara (Vonesh) Campbell. She married Abram Burnett, IV, in Wichita on June 23, 1946. He died May 16, 1999.

A current Great Bend resident, coming from Timken, Salina and Wichita, Patricia a house cleaner, a cook for several restaurants in Timken and La Crosse, and worked for Jr’s Cleaners in Wichita. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church in Timken and Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, as well as the Altar Society. When Patricia was younger, she enjoyed bowling. She was a gifted seamstress and loved her cats.

Survivors include, two sons, Mike Burnett and wife Barbara of Wichita, and Patrick Burnett and wife Lyndsay of Great Bend; two daughters, Sue Parks of husband Bobby of Wichita, and Barbara Powers and husband Alvin of Salina; seven grandchildren, Jeremy Burnett, Damean Burnett, Nowa Stueve, Allison Parks, Ashley Bowers, Sydney Kruckenberg and Keaton Kruckenberg; several great grandchildren; and one great great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Abram.; and a grandson, Abram Parks.

Richard Braun, 72, passed away July 13, 2023, at Hays Medical Center, Hays.

He was born Dec. 6, 1950, in Hays, the son of Andrew E. and Matilda Dreher Braun. A longtime area resident; he was an Oil Field Pumper.

He enjoyed farming with his father, and model cars. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post #1751 in Victoria and a member of the American Legion Post #173 in Hays.

Richard Braun, age 72

Dennis Vernon Klima, age 71, was welcomed by his Lord and Savior, on July 25, 2023, after a work related accident. He was born September 9, 1951, in Sterling, Kansas. He was the first born to Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima. He grew up in Claflin, Kansas and graduated from Claflin High School in 1970.

Dennis married his sweetheart, Rhonda Clinkscales, on August 1, 1976, in Holyrood, Kansas, in the presence of their family at the residence of a friend. To their union, they welcomed a son, David Klima, daughter, Laura Klima-Fehr, and their youngest son, Jordan Klima.

Dennis and his wife, Rhonda, have lived in Great Bend since 1999. Dennis was an active member of Grace Community Church, and was a known as a man of godly character amongst his friends, community members, and those who worked with him in the oil patch. His faith meant everything thing to him, and those around him could always expect to hear a Bible verse or word of encouragement from Dennis. He enjoyed attending Adult Bible Fellowship and weekly men’s prayer meetings. His family knew that they could find him up early reading his Bible or on his knees in prayer before going to work for the day.

Dennis worked in the oil industry for over 46 years, owning Klima Well Service for over 42 years. He was known amongst his peers for his knowledge of the business and his hard work ethic. The dedication to his business was a character trait that all of his children also possess and they take pride in carrying on the legacy of hard work their father displayed.

Dennis was a loving husband and proud father &amp; grandfather, who enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family. They will remember his servant-heart, silly nicknames, and love of Hallmark Movies.

Klima was survived by his wife, Rhonda (Clinkscales) Klima, children: David (Misty) of Boise, Idaho, Laura (Matt) of Kansas City, Kansas, and Jordan (Natalie) of Hays, Kansas; grandchildren: Macey, Micah, Maxson, and Mavery; and siblings, Donna Briggeman, Gary Klima, Vera Blair, Sherry Siemsen, Ernest Klima, and Jim Klima. Dennis was proceeded in death by his parents, Vernon and Lavina Mae (Belote) Klima.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Vera worked in the kitchen at the Dominican Sisters Motherhouse in Great Bend for 29 years and previously had worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she was awarded a gold pen with two blue pearls for not missing a day of work in two years. She was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Great Bend, Eagles Club, and Sunflower Polka Club. Vera enjoyed dancing, painting, playing cards and slot machines.

Survivors include, her husband, Alvin Muth of the home; a daughter, Denise Appel and husband Rich of Rush Center; a son, Darren Muth and wife Ruth of Longmont, Colo.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Vera Muth, age 89

Floyd Charles Tuzicka, 85, of Russell, and formerly of Hoisington and Olmitz, passed away Monday morning, July 24, 2023, at the Russell Regional Hospital.

Floyd was born April 25, 1938 in rural Olmitz. He was the son of Charles George and Barbara Janice (Dome) Tuzicka. He grew up in Hoisington and attended Hoisington schools.

Floyd served his country in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Beirut and Lebanon. After his tour was done, he returned to the Olmitz area.

Floyd was united in marriage to Clara Constance “Connie” Hewitt on Nov. 17, 1963, in Medicine Lodge. They made their home in Olmitz. They moved to the Russell area the last couple of years.

Floyd worked for Red Tiger in the oilfields. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Olmitz and later St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Russell. He was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus. He was a past Commander of the VFW Post in Hoisington and later joined the VFW Post 6240 in Russell. He enjoyed hunting, especially bird hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Floyd is survived by his wife of 59 years, Connie of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Orville Tuzicka.

Celebration of the Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023, at St. Mary, Queen of Angels Catholic Church of Russell. Deborah A. “Debbie” Jimison, 66, died July 19, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. She was born August 18, 1956, in Ellinwood, Kansas, the daughter of Gene and Marietta (Bieberle) Mooney. Debbie graduated from Bushton High School in 1975.

On August 23, 1975, she maried Kyle M. Jimison in Bushton, Kansas.

A lifetime Bushton resident, Debbie worked for Wal-Mart, Dollar General and most recently The Thunderbird Center in Bushton retiring in December of 2022. Debbie enjoyed her work in retail as she could talk to anyone. Her family describes her as the rock of the family, always caring for everyone. They fondly remember her great cooking and baking skills, especially her mashed potatoes, potato salad, mac and cheese, oven baked spaghetti and her homemade bierocks, to name a few. Besides cooking Debbie enjoyed coloring, word search puzzles, and cross-stich.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Kyle M. Jimison of the home; two sons, Chad Jimison and wife Misty of Clearwater and Jermy Jimison of Little River; three grandchildren, Taylor Jimison of Ellsworth, Daxton Jimison, and Tymberlin Jimison both of Clearwater; two brothers, Roy Mooney and wife Joyce, and Floy Mooney, all of Bushton.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Mooney.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 28, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Inurnment service will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, rural Bushton, Kansas. Friends may sign the book only as cremation has taken place.

Barbara Janelle Gregory, 86, passed away July 20, 2023, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence, Kan. She was born on June 23, 1937, at Ellinwood, to Gottfried &amp; Marie (Winter) Miller. She married Frank W. Gregory on October 31, 1954, at Ellinwood. He died December 4, 1990.

A recent resident of Lawrence, Barbara was formerly of Great Bend, Hoisington, Ellinwood, Hoxie and Garden City. She worked in housekeeping at CKMC for many years and a former member of St. John Lutheran Church in Ellinwood. Barbara enjoyed crocheting, and word search puzzles.

Survivors include, two sons, Wayne Gregory and wife Joyce of Hillsdale, Kan., and David Gregory and wife Brenda of Burlington, Colo.; a daughter, Brenda Sekavec and husband Dale of Lawrence; a brother, Richard “Dick” Miller and wife Dorothy of Great Bend; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frank; an infant son, Danny J. Gregory; two brothers, Gottfied Miller and Robert Miller; and three sisters, Alvera Miller, Lydia Ailshie and Emma Beardslee.

Carolann Morrison, age 89, of Great Bend, Kansas passed away Monday afternoon, July 17, 2023 at The University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus.&nbsp; Carolann (a.k.a. Carol Ann) was born in Great Bend, Kansas on August 19,1933 to Ethel Marie (Milberger) and Judson T. Bradford. At an early age her father died in an oil field accident.&nbsp; A few years later, her widowed mother and John S. “Jack” Morrison were united in marriage. It was then she was adopted by Jack Morrison.

Carolann went to elementary through high school in Great Bend, Kansas graduating in 1951. During part of her high school years, she wrote a column for the Great Bend Tribune called Teen Talk. After graduating, she attended Kansas University and St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas. She became a flight attendant for Braniff Airways. She was based out of Kansas City, before moving to Dallas, TX where she pursued her career until 1966. After leaving Braniff, she worked in the travel industry until retirement on April 16, 1999.&nbsp; She returned to Great Bend to live with and care for her mother.

Carolann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Great Bend, the Presbyterian Women, and the Red Hat Society.&nbsp; She served on the Great Bend Library Board for 8 years. Her pets were her greatest joy.

She is survived by her cousin, Mary Everett of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Mary’s children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild; and Kevin Pflughoeft of Great Bend, Kansas who Carolann called the adopted grandson.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents.

According to Carolann’s wishes, there will be no viewing or services. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery at Great Bend, Kansas. Carolann Morrison, age 89

Duane G. Legleiter (aka Butch or Tiny), 60, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, July 19, 2023, at his home.

He was born January 19, 1963, in Hays, Kansas, the son of Francis and Mary Ann (Dinkel) Legleiter. He was a lifetime resident of Rush County, Kansas, a 1981 graduate of La Crosse High School and was employed with Rush County Highway Department for 36 years, running heavy equipment, building bridges and supervising day to day operations for several years. He was a passionate farmer, helped with the Legleiter and Sons Construction Company in the 1970’s/80’s, collector of Budweiser memorabilia, and he just seemed to know a little bit about everything.

He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church of Liebenthal, Kansas, and served on the parish council for many years.

On November 17, 1984, he married his high school sweetheart, Monica McLaughlin in La Crosse.

Survivors include, wife, Monica, La Crosse; his mother, Mary Ann Legleiter, Liebenthal; one daughter, Samantha and son-in-law, Deonte Sims, Kansas City; two grand dogs, Tori and Ace; one brother, Bob Legleiter (Sue), Hays; five sisters, Janett Copeland, Hays, Shirley Haselhorst (Art), Antonino, Lilly Binder (Ernie), Munjor, Evelyn Younker (Darold), Munjor, and Lou Amerine (Craig), Lawrence; one sister-in-law, Carol Legleiter, Hays; numerous aunts, uncles, Godchildren, nieces and nephews and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Francis Legleiter; his two brothers, Clarence Legleiter and Glenn Legleiter; mother-in-law, Beth Delaney; and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and nephew.

William “Bill” Jefferson Keener, 94, passed away July 11, 2023, at Wellsprings of Westmoreland in Westmoreland, Kan. He was born on March 17, 1929, at Hoisington, to Fred &amp; Frances “Fanny” (Schreiber) Keener. He married Joan Elliott on May 27, 1951, at Great Bend. She died December 5, 2001.

A former Great Bend resident, Bill was the math and science teacher at Mullinville High School. He was a member of King United Methodist Church in Great Bend and the Walnut City Masonic Lodge #215. He enjoyed spending time with his family.

Survivors include, a son, Adam Keener and wife Kay Hawes of Prairie Village; two daughters, Debbie Winn and wife Kelly Hanshew of Drexel Hill, Penn. and Peggie Post and husband Dennis of Manhattan; a sister, Betty Misegadis of Rush Center; two sisters in law, Jan Elliott of Great Bend, and Jinny Schneider of Rush Center; five grandchildren, Ben Hanshew, Jill Breuer (Mark), Jenna Nightingale (Cy), Rory Keener and Reagan Keener; and four great grandchildren, Lilly, Luke and Lauren Breuer, and Braden Meyer. William 'Bill' Keener, age 94

Agnes Ann Ryan, 70, passed away on July 17, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born on Sept. 25, 1952, in Manhattan, the daughter of Isadore and Elizabeth (Scheck) Leiker. On July 8, 1981, she married John Ryan in Miami, Okla.

A lifetime area resident, Agnes worked as a computer programmer for the Fuller Brush Company for 34 years prior to her retirement in 2012. She was a dedicated Catholic, being a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima, active with St. Joseph Catholic Church and School, serving as a “grandfriend” for students, and was even prayed through the gates of Heaven by Father Terrance Klein. Agnes enjoyed crocheting and sewing, using her green thumb in gardening, and was an avid funeral goer, offering comfort to all that she knew. Her heart was bigger than her body and she loved with all of it, taking care of everyone and was always ready and willing to help anyone. She didn’t know a stranger.

Agnes is survived by her husband of 42 years, John; two sons, Daniel (Victoria) Ryan of Lindsborg, and Stoney (Angie) Ryan of Ellinwood; three daughters, Amanda “Amy” Crawford of Ellinwood, Tamara “Tammy” (Darren) Dauber of Ellinwood, and Shira Ryan of Lyons; 19 grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah) Ryan, Kaylie (fiancé Matthew Adams) Ryan, Kristian Ryan, Kamryn Ryan, Cassandra Crane, Troy Crane, Kenya (Kaden) Kretzer, Xathan Ryan, Casey Ann Ryan, Paige VanSteenburgh, Ison Dauber, RhiAnn Dauber, Keith Burke, Dalton White, Shayla (Michael) Mills, Zeppelin Zimmerman, Axl Ryan, Jamey Wood, and Ella Mae Lynn Wood; 18 great-grandchildren with one on the way. After growing up and living most of her life as an only child, Agnes was blessed after discovering she was the oldest of several biological siblings, including a brother, Seth Hoff; and four sisters, Sandra Peters, Norma Mason, Rita Shannon, and Barbara Calahan.

She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Taylor Langen and Taylor Wood; a great-grandchild, Emmitt Mills; and two sisters, Hilda Shannon and Laura Groneberg.

Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. She didn’t know a stranger.Agnes is survived by her husband of 42 years, John; two sons, Daniel (Victoria) Ryan of Lindsborg, and Stoney (Angie) Ryan of Ellinwood; three daughters, Amanda “Amy” Crawford of Ellinwood, Tamara “Tammy” (Darren) Dauber of Ellinwood, and Shira Ryan of Lyons; 19 grandchildren, Kyle (Sarah) Ryan, Kaylie (fiancé Matthew Adams) Ryan, Kristian Ryan, Kamryn Ryan, Cassandra Crane, Troy Crane, Kenya (Kaden) Kretzer, Xathan Ryan, Casey Ann Ryan, Paige VanSteenburgh, Ison Dauber, RhiAnn Dauber, Keith Burke, Dalton White, Shayla (Michael) Mills, Zeppelin Zimmerman, Axl Ryan, Jamey Wood, and Ella Mae Lynn Wood; 18 great-grandchildren with one on the way. After growing up and living most of her life as an only child, Agnes was blessed after discovering she was the oldest of several biological siblings, including a brother, Seth Hoff; and four sisters, Sandra Peters, Norma Mason, Rita Shannon, and Barbara Calahan.She is preceded in death by her parents; two grandchildren, Taylor Langen and Taylor Wood; a great-grandchild, Emmitt Mills; and two sisters, Hilda Shannon and Laura Groneberg.Visitation will take place on Thursday, July 20, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home, Great Bend. Further visitation with family receiving guests will take place at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Ellinwood, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with vigil starting at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 21, 2023, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Terrance Klein presiding. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood.
