Herbert (Herb) Benton Bowman, 92, passed away Oct. 3, 2023, at Credo Living Center, Hoisington.

He was born June 11, 1931, in Larned, the son of Hugh Benton and Velma Myrtle Rice Bowman.

A lifetime area resident, he owned Bo-lan Holstein Farm for 51 years. After graduating from Zook High School and attending Kansas State university, he served in the United States Army. He was active in Larned United Methodist Church, Kansas Holstein Association, and Pawnee County Extension Board.

He is survived by his wife Kathy (Kathleen) Penka. They were married on September 4, 1954, in Arkansas.

Other survivors include: four daughters, Donna Maskus, Hays; Dee (James) Eberwein, Alma; Shelly (Gregg) Sexton, Abilene; and Sharon (Mark) Lessard, Larned; sister, Evelyn Bergmann, Kansas City; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Bowman, Salina; 10 grandchildren, Mark Maskus, Matt Maskus, Allen Eberwein, Ben (Jami) Eberwein, Chris Eberwein, Sarah (Jarrod) Bowser, Jamie Sexton, Kathleen (Justin) Schultze, Alex (Seth) Filbert, and Amanda Lessard; nine great grandchildren, Ellerey and Easton Eberwein, Claire and Cora Bowser, Grant and Royce Schultze and Giles, Layne and Baby Filbert.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Robert (Bob) Bowman; and son-in-law Stan Maskus.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at Larned United Methodist Church, Larned. Visitation is 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, with family present from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned. Burial will be in Larned Cemetery, Larned, with military graveside rites.

Herbert 'Herb' Bowman, age 92

Donald B. Zook, age 93, passed away Sept. 30, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita with his children, Tamara and Bob, at his side.

He was born Nov. 20, 1929, at the family farm near Zook, the son of Abner Jesse and Ida (White) Zook - born in the same room as his father and his older siblings, Dorothy and Milford.

He went to school at the Zook public school through his sophomore year of high school before transferring to Hesston Academy for his junior and senior years, then continuing at Hesston through his associate degree in Education. In 1946, Don participated as a “Seagoing Cowboy” with the Mennonite Relief Effort of rebuilding Poland after WWII by hauling a shipload of pregnant mares, making him aware of the ravages of war and instilling in him a love of international travel. Don received his Bachelor of Philosophy at Bethel College and went on to teach and coach for a year at Shallow Water High School before going to Southern Methodist University where he received his Masters of Divinity. 

While teaching at Shallow Water High School he met Natalie Jo Zink, the daughter of the school board president, and they married in 1954. After ordination as a Methodist minister, his first of nine Kansas church appointments was to Palco and Mt. Pleasant congregations (1955-1958) where Don and Natalie’s first child, Tamara Kay, was born. His second appointment was Lindsborg and Bridgeport (1958-1963) where their second child Dana Bob was born. Belle Plaine followed (1963-1967) and Bird City (1967-1973) where he led the design and building of new churches for both congregations. After a summer-long family travel experience in Southeast Asia in 1970, missionary friends contacted Don and Natalie to sponsor Philemon Yamin to the United States, and a brother was brought into the extended Zook Family later providing grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

The following appointments were Grace United Methodist, Wichita, Kansas (1973-1977); Hoisington (1977-1981); Leoti and Pleasant Valley (1981-1984); Great Bend First Church (1984-9187) and ending his almost 40 year career at the trio appointment of Macksville, Belpre, Trusdale (1987-1993). During his career and then during retirement Don and Natalie supported international congregations as an interim pastor: Northern Ireland; Northern England; London; Bogata, Columbia; Brazilia, Brazil and Bali, Indonesia. 

Don and Natalie built a vacation cabin in Pitkin, Colo., where for 50 years they happily summered. Don loved reading and writing and supporting sports while also exercising daily himself, leading to winning several Kansas Senior Games gold medals where he was the oldest participant by 20 years. His curiosity of people, politics, and places was the driving force of his love of travel which took him to over 60 countries. Don and Natalie also loved traveling from Alaska to Mexico in their RV.

Don Zook was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Dorothy Rishel, brother Milford Zook and wife Natalie Jo (Zink) Zook.

He is survived by his two children, Tamara Zook and Bob Zook, as well as his extended, Yamin family Philemon, Ting Ting, grandchildren Sheshin (Rob) Yeung and Shiann (Sally) Yamin and great-grandchildren Jessica, Jacob and Liam as well as many cousins and Zink and Zook nieces and nephews - grand and great grand.

Don’s celebration of life will be Friday, Oct. 6, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Larksfield Place Auditorium at 2727 E. 29th Street N., Wichita. The graveside service will be held at Pleasant Valley Township Cemetery, Pawnee County (Zook), Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, at 11 a.m. with Pastor Carl Martin presiding.

Donald Zook, age 93

Carol Aylene Langen, age 90, died at her home in Weatherford, TX on September 27, 2023. Carol was born in 1932 in Los Angeles, CA. At age 5, she moved to Great Bend, KS, and was raised by her mother, Anna (Fisher) Cook, and her adoptive father, Elmer C. Cook. She married Paul Langen in 1962.

Carol spent most of her adult life involved with music and education. She taught public school for over 40 years in Osborne, KS, Salt Lake City, UT, and Great Bend, KS. She also volunteered teaching duties at St. Patrick’s Academy and Grace Academy in Great Bend, KS. She was actively involved in church service. Among her duties were Sunday school teacher, coordinator of girls programs, choir director, drama director, and senior ministries pastor. She served in various churches in Kansas, Arizona, and Texas.

She was preceded by her husband, Paul Langen; and her grandchildren, Jeremiah Langen and Taylor Langen. She is survived by her four sons, Nathan Langen of Nowata, OK, Gregory Langen of Weatherford, TX, Joel Langen of Colby, KS, Jason Langen and wife Amy of Salina, KS; her adopted daughter, Marlene Martin and husband Eddie of Great Bend, KS; grandchildren, Chad Langen and husband Clayton Jewett, Amaya Langen, Aidan Barnes, Jacob Langen, and Conley Barnes-Langen, and Erin Martin and significant other Jonathan Griffin; one great grandchild, Braxton Hernandez; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 11:00 AM at Encounter Church in Great Bend, KS. A private family burial will follow at a later date. Carol Langen, age 90

Jerry D. Borgstadter, dedicated husband and father, passed away on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at the age of 88. He was in the care of the Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed Unit in La Crosse, Kansas.

Jerry was born January 30, 1935, in Lincoln, Kansas. He was the son of George Herman and Bertha Mae (Shafer) Borgstadter. He graduated from Lincoln County High School in 1952.

In August 1963, he married Nina Kohls. They later divorced. On February 14, 2004, he married Dolores (Solomon) Pokorny at the First United Methodist Church in La Crosse, Kansas. This union brought joy and companionship to his life, and they shared many experiences and memories together.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life of hunting and fishing with friends, Edward Fischer and Bob Cooper. In addition to his love for the outdoors, he was a skilled pool player, and spent time teaching trick shots to others. Jerry enjoyed football, especially K-State football and the local high school team. He also enjoyed spending time in his shop creating special woodworking projects for family and friends.

Professionally, Jerry was a senior engineering technician and land surveyor, a career that reflected his attention to detail. During the 43 years of his career, he traveled the western part of Kansas creating many lifelong friendships.

Survivors include: His wife, Dolores Borgstadter, La Crosse, Kansas; son, Darin Borgstadter (Holly Galloway), Salem, Oregon; daughter, Valerie

(Borgstadter) Nixon, Prineville, Oregon; stepson, John Pokorny MD, Hays, Kansas; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Nixon, Eugene, Oregon and Dallen Nixon, Monmouth, Oregon; step grandchildren, Ryan Pokorny, Richmond, Virginia and Jill (Pokorny) Stolz, Omaha, Nebraska, and step great grandchild, Aspen Elaine Stolz, Omaha, Nebraska.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son in law, Dale Nixon, and brother, Gerald Borgstadter.

Jerry Borgstadter, age 88

Dellors Elaine Catterfeld, 62, passed away Sept. 30, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born Dec. 19, 1960, in Hutchinson, to Larry Ellsworth, Sr. and Lorrine (Stevens) Ellsworth. She married Robert W. Catterfeld in Great Bend. He died Jan. 23, 2001.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Dellors was a cook for the Great Bend Senior Center and had previously worked at Barton Community College and USD 428. She was a member of the Great Bend Sportsman Club and was an avid fisher.

Survivors include, a son, Tyler Swank and wife Shonita of Hoisington; two daughters, Lacy Fox and husband Dustin and Melissa Wilson and husband Benjamin all of Kinsley; a stepson, Scott Catterfeld of Lansing; three stepdaughters, Shawn Wilson of Ottawa, Shannon Boller (Bill) of Candenton, Mo. and Wendy Radke (Craig) of Spring Hill; two brothers, Larry Ellsworth, Jr. (Kelly) of Hutchison and Shannon Thacker of Atchison; two sisters, Diana Hayward of Great Bend and Lisa Bortz of Wichita; 22 grandchildren, Zoe Barta, Nakita Barta, Ace Prather, Boomer Foster, Shelby Foster, Michael Barr III, Daisy Rehme, Colton King, Naomi Fox, Robert Wilson, Aurora Wilson, Michael Fox, Dean Fox, Grace Fox, Lukas Fox, Amyelia Fox, Elliott Fox and Lilyann Fox; five great-grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 18 step great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Sheryl Jean Neeland, 66, passed away September 29, 2023, at The University of Kansas Medical Center – Great Bend Campus. She was born August 12, 1957, in Hobbs, New Mexico, to Dale &amp; Ella (Koch) Hartig. On July 28, 1990, Sheryl was united in marriage to Craig Neeland in Ellinwood, Kansas.

Sheryl grew up in rural Ellinwood, Kansas, graduating from Ellinwood High School in 1975. She received her Associate’s in Nursing from Barton Community College and continued her education at Fort Hays State University with a Bachelor’s in Education degree in 1983. From there, Sheryl received her Master’s in Counseling degree in 1993.

Sheryl loved to spend time with her children, son-in-law, and daughter-in-law, as well as her grandchildren. She touched the lives of many children in Great Bend. She was a Kindergarten teacher and school nurse at Riley Elementary, a Guidance Counselor at Jefferson Elementary and Park Elementary and then at the Great Bend Middle School. She worked for the Great Bend USD 428 District for a total of 38 years. She was instrumental in developing Reality U at the Middle School. Sheryl was active in many local volunteer organizations including United Way of Central Kansas and Memories Matter Camp. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society and Daughters of Isabella.

Survivors include, her husband, Craig Neeland of the home; two children, Sarah Trujillo and husband Tyler of Hugoton and Adam Neeland and wife Alex of Great Bend; two grandchildren, Madden and Ella Trujillo, with a grandbaby Trujillo to arrive in December; one brother, JR Hartig (Bernie) of Phoenix, Arizona; a sister, Carol Byrd (Eugene) of Birmingham, Alabama; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; Dale and Ella Hartig; and father-in-law, Paul Neeland

Margaret Mary Pechanec, 85, Timken, Kansas, died Sunday, September 24, 2023, at the Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Margaret was born February 26, 1938, at Warnock Place near Bison, Kansas, the last child of Matthew and Velma (Hoofer) Kopsky. Margaret’s father died when she was 18 months old. Her stepfather, Leo Helfrich, and her mother raised her from age six. From her stepfather she received a deep spiritual and moral sense. She graduated from St Michael’s Catholic School and attended Bison High School.

On December 27, 1954, Margaret married Stephen C. Pechanec at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Timken, Kansas. To this union she had seven children. She was a stay-at-home mother and helped her husband establish the Timken Seed Company, where she held the title of Secretary/Treasurer until 2012. She was an avid reader and made many meals during harvest. She enjoyed painting. She was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.

Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Steve, Timken, Kansas; her children, Susan (Alan) Urban, La Crosse, Kansas, L. Margaret Mary Pechanec

Clifford “Cliff” C. Bieberle, 87, passed away Sept. 26, 2023, at Riverbend Assisted Living of Great Bend. He was born April 16, 1936, at Bushton to Tony and Mary (Hammeke) Bieberle. He married Janet R. Polzin Oct. 19, 1957, at Dubuque. She died July 19, 2000. He then married Geraldine “Gerry” (Depiesse) Steinert on Sept. 23, 2009. She survives.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Cliff owned Cliff’s Trash Service for 43 years until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Council #862. He enjoyed playing pitch, hunting, fishing, socializing with friends, and was known to be quick with a story.

Survivors include, his wife, Gerry Bieberle of the home; two sons, Jim Bieberle (Crystal) of Great Bend and Danny Bieberle (Tammy Becker) of Medicine Lodge; three daughters, Linda Francis (Todd), Vicki Woodral (Bill) and Donna Eshleman (Matt) all of Great Bend; a sister, Elvera Ewald (Jerry) of Wichita; eight grandchildren, Chelsea Laramore (Mark), Trista Fritz (Charlie), Chase Bieberle (Jes), Samanatha Elsen (Alex), Jeff Woodral (Krystal), Stephanie Richter (Jesse), Justin Bieberle (Crystal) and Jennelle Ochoa (Tim); 22 great-grandchildren; three step-children, Jay Steinert (Cheryl) of Hoisington, Marty Steinert of Hoisington and Terry Steinert (Stacey) of Kansas City, Mo.; and six step-grandchildren, Shane Andereck, Cole Steinert, Chase Steinert, Mindy Steinert, Taylor Meitner and Tanner Cassity. Edna J. Stairrett, 89, passed away September 26, 2023 at Hodgeman County Health Center, Jetmore.

She was born December 6, 1933 in Knoxville, Tennessee, the daughter of Jay Hugh and Emma Greene Green. She was a farm wife.

She was of the Presbyterian faith. She was a member of CASA, Democratic party committee chairwoman, trustee for Valley Township and was on the Library board, Senior Center board and the Fairmount Cemetery board, all of Jetmore.

On September 3, 1955, she married Jack B. Stairrett in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He died October 21, 2011.

Survivors include: two sons, Andy Stairrett, Joe (Svetlana) Stairrett, both of Jetmore; daughter, Jaci (Randy) Dumler, Ness City; two brothers, Johnny Green, Bahama, NC, David Green, Knoxville, TN; three sisters, Jeanette (Paul) Ownby, Mary Cash, Emma Lou Scarbro, all of Knoxville, TN; two sister-in-laws, Keiko Stairrett, Olympia, WA and Sandra Stum, Towner, CO; seven grandchildren, Amanda (Curtiss) Stairrett, Stephanie (Justin) Fuller, Danny (Mikki) Dumler, Lee Stairrett, Linda (Kevin) Stairrett, Grant (Rachel) Stairrett, Colt Stairrett; four great grandchildren, Alexis Swinney, Aiden Schlotthauer, Braydin Schlotthauer, Kimberly Stairrett and numerous nieces and nephews.

Edna Stairrett, age 89

Edgar Leslie “Ed” Sandritter, 89, died September 26, 2023, at his home in Hoisington. He was born July 1, 1934, in Arma, Kansas, the son of Edgar H. &amp; Edna Faye (Scott) Sandritter. Ed graduated from Crawford County High School and attended college at Labette County Community College in Parsons, Kansas, where he played baseball. In 1956 he enlisted in the military serving as a Spec 3 with the United States Army.

On June 3, 1960, he married Judy L. Sutton, in Miami, Oklahoma. To this union was blessed a son, David and daughter, Jill. Always a hard worker, Ed worked for Schneider Construction and later Marlette Mobile Homes. In 1981 he became the director of buildings and grounds for Hoisington USD 431, retiring in 1999. They raised their family in Hoisington, where Ed was active in the children’s sports, coaching little league and serving as the Little League president. He loved all sports: basketball, football, track, tennis and would travel to watch and cheer whether it was high school, collegiate teams, K-State, KU, or Pittsburg State. He loved cheering for them all, especially if family was involved. He also loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Upon retirement Ed and Judy enjoyed traveling and Ed took up golfing, enjoying those times spent with his friends.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Judy Sandritter of the home: son, David Sandritter and wife Sue of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Jill Sinclair and husband Matthew of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter, Mallory Sinclair Ross and husband Daniel of Fort Collins, Colorado; a sister, Sharon Evans and husband Ed of Frontenac, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews: Frank Naccarato (Mary), Kathie Emerson, Karen Pace, Michael Evans (Letha), Matthew Evans (Amy), Brian Sutton (Marilyn), Angela Watson (Rob), Jason Sutton (Celestine), and Diane Zoeller (Eric).

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Lee Doss and Margaret Naccarato; a niece, Judy Doss, and two nephews, Danny Doss and Nicholas Reichuber.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Hoisington Cemetery.

 </figure>Edgar Leslie “Ed” Sandritter, 89, died September 26, 2023, at his home in Hoisington. He was born July 1, 1934, in Arma, Kansas, the son of Edgar H. &amp; Edna Faye (Scott) Sandritter. Ed graduated from Crawford County High School and attended college at Labette County Community College in Parsons, Kansas, where he played baseball. In 1956 he enlisted in the military serving as a Spec 3 with the United States Army.On June 3, 1960, he married Judy L. Sutton, in Miami, Oklahoma. To this union was blessed a son, David and daughter, Jill. Always a hard worker, Ed worked for Schneider Construction and later Marlette Mobile Homes. In 1981 he became the director of buildings and grounds for Hoisington USD 431, retiring in 1999. They raised their family in Hoisington, where Ed was active in the children’s sports, coaching little league and serving as the Little League president. He loved all sports: basketball, football, track, tennis and would travel to watch and cheer whether it was high school, collegiate teams, K-State, KU, or Pittsburg State. He loved cheering for them all, especially if family was involved. He also loved watching the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Upon retirement Ed and Judy enjoyed traveling and Ed took up golfing, enjoying those times spent with his friends.He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Judy Sandritter of the home: son, David Sandritter and wife Sue of Columbus, Ohio; daughter, Jill Sinclair and husband Matthew of Fort Collins, Colorado; granddaughter, Mallory Sinclair Ross and husband Daniel of Fort Collins, Colorado; a sister, Sharon Evans and husband Ed of Frontenac, Kansas; and many nieces and nephews: Frank Naccarato (Mary), Kathie Emerson, Karen Pace, Michael Evans (Letha), Matthew Evans (Amy), Brian Sutton (Marilyn), Angela Watson (Rob), Jason Sutton (Celestine), and Diane Zoeller (Eric).He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Mary Lee Doss and Margaret Naccarato; a niece, Judy Doss, and two nephews, Danny Doss and Nicholas Reichuber.Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, with family to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 30, 2023, at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home Chapel. Edgar 'Ed' Sandritter, age 89

Margaret was born February 26, 1938, at Warnock Place near Bison, Kansas, the last child of Matthew and Velma (Hoofer) Kopsky. Margaret’s father died when she was 18 months old. Her stepfather, Leo Helfrich, and her mother raised her from age 6. From her stepfather she received a deep spiritual and moral sense. She graduated from St Michael’s Catholic School and attended Bison High School.

Ricardo San Miguel, 68, passed away September 18, 2023 at Larned, Kansas.

He was born July 13, 1955 in Dumas, Texas, the son of Juan and Andrea Santana San Miguel. He was an independent contractor for construction. He was a wonderful father. He will be sadly missed and will always hold a place in our hearts.

Survivors include: son, Daniel (Teresa) San Miguel, Lyons, Kansas; daughter, Melissa (Roberto) Nevarez, Larned, Kansas; son Gabriel (Keylee) San Miguel, Harper, Kansas; son, Caleb San Miguel, Phoenix, Arizona; and twelve grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters.

Marjorie I. McKinney, 88, passed away September 20, 2023 at Cedar Village, Ness City, Kansas.

She was born August 5, 1935 in Longdale, Oklahoma the daughter of Avery G. and Edna Knoop Hall.

A lifetime area resident; she was a teacher. She was a member of New Beginnings Church of the Nazarene of Larned, Kansas.

She married Carl McKinney on July 10, 1966 in Kinsley, Kansas. He preceded her in death on March 14, 2023.

Survivors include: son, Kenneth R. McKinney, Arlington, Kansas; daughter, Sheila McKinney, Garfield, Kansas; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Dean Hall and Jon Hall; and a sister Irene Miller.

Marjorie McKinney, age 88

LeRoy Eugene Wilhelm, 95, passed away on September 25, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven in Great Bend, Kan. He was born on October 28, 1927, to Henry Wilhelm, Jr. and Martha Ernst Wilhelm. He was born and raised on a farm northwest of Susank and went to school in a one room schoolhouse 1 ½ miles from the farm through the 8th grade.

On June 6, 1954, he married Arlene Muth in Hoisington at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, having been married over 68 years. He was a farmer and then entered the United States Army. He was a tank driver for his military commander at Fort Riley.

He was a member of the church council, head usher and Sunday school superintendent of Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Hoisington. He then moved to Great Bend and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church until his death. He was a member of Eagles Lodge of Great Bend for 55 years.

Survivors include, two daughters, LaVentrice Wilhelm of Surprise, Ariz., and LaVeneia Smith and husband, Kyle, of Claflin, Kan.; a grandson, Preston Smith, of Claflin, Kan.; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn Rice of Greenwood, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; a brother, Ernest Wilhelm; and three sisters, Janiece Cowan, Janeal Rodecape, and Darlene Rundle.

Memorial Service will be at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Nancy Mitchell, PMA presiding. The family will be receiving guests prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Bryant Funeral Home. Inurnment will be in the Hoisington Cemetery, with Military Rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorials have been designated to the Gentiva Hospice, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Janice Marie Schultz, 84, passed away September 22, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born December 8, 1938, in Great Bend to Daniel and Selma (Hartman) Scheck. Janice married Bernard Mauler, Jr. June 18, 1957, then later married Leslie L. Schultz May 20, 1982, in Pawnee Rock. Leslie passed away March 24, 2002.

Janice, a current resident of Great Bend moving from Pawnee Rock in 2007, was a 1957 graduate of Otis High School and faithfully served as a Nurse Aide at Central Kansas Medical Center for many years. She was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, as well as being active in the Bergthal Mennonite Church, Pawnee Rock, and enjoyed sewing, German heritage food, and time spent with family and friends, often times traveling many miles. She was also known for her quilting skills, awarding many quilts to Service Members and Veterans through Quilts of Valor. She gifted many quilts to family members.

Survivors include one son, Michael Mauler of Great Bend; three daughters, Susan Grimes (Fred) of Auburn, Calif., Michele Johnson (David) of Gainesville, Mo., and Sandra Kuhn (Jeff) of Clovis, Calif..; three stepdaughters, Ronda Hixon (Larry) of Pawnee Rock, Debra Schultz of Tulsa, Okla.; and Marla Davidson (Greg) of Great Bend; and six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in passing by husband, Leslie; an infant sister, Brenda Scheck; and a daughter in law, Julie Mauler.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 29, 2023, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Otis, with Stan Ewy SAM, presiding. Interment will follow at Mennonite Memorial Cemetery, Pawnee Rock. Janice Schultz, age 84

Robert (Bob) J. Scheideman, age 84, of Ellinwood, passed away on Sept. 22, 2023 at Medicalodges in Great Bend. Bob was born June 30, 1939, to Elmer and Ameila Scheideman in La Crosse. Elmer and Ameila had four children together. Bob was the third oldest of his four siblings. Bob lived in La Crosse for all his childhood.&nbsp; After high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, Bob returned home to La Crosse. 

Upon returning home, Bob started working for his father as a truck driver. Bob welcomed three daughters during his first marriage to Charlotte Burton. They welcomed their first daughter, Julie Scheideman on Nov. 15, 1964. Robin Scheideman was born a few years later on June 17, 1969. Their youngest daughter, Patsy Kline, was born on Dec. 8,1973. 

After Bob’s marriage to Charlotte, he moved to Phillipsburg for work and this is where he eventually met the love of his life, Mary Rozean Scheideman. On Aug. 30, 1979, Bob and Mary were married in Norton. When Bob married Mary, she had two children, which Bob helped raise. Milissa Rhoades was born on June 16, 1968. Brian Scheideman is the youngest son of Mary, and he was born Aug. 19, 1975. Bob was an astounding father to all five children.

After Bob and Mary were married, they moved to Ellinwood in 1980 for career opportunities. Bob enjoyed being a truck driver because he could explore the countryside. He drove a truck for 55 years. Eventually, Bob started working for Clear Creek in 1980, and continued his career with Clear Creek until he eventually retired in 1993. After retirement, Bob enjoyed woodworking and making gifts for his family. He would often travel to the Rozean Family Farm in Norton with Mary. Bob enjoyed working alongside his brother-in-law, John Rozean and his wife Mary.

Bob loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. They always knew he was in the crowd because he was the loudest one cheering. Bob also loved fishing with his son Brian and his son-in law, Mike. He enjoyed attending auctions and collecting trinkets. In his free time, Bob was entertained by word searches and sitting outside under his favorite tree with Mary. Most mornings you could find Bob at the local Zip Stop in Ellinwood enjoying a hot cup of coffee. Bob was loving, supportive, generous, and caring to all.

 </figure>Robert (Bob) J. Scheideman, age 84, of Ellinwood, passed away on Sept. 22, 2023 at Medicalodges in Great Bend. Bob was born June 30, 1939, to Elmer and Ameila Scheideman in La Crosse. Elmer and Ameila had four children together. Bob was the third oldest of his four siblings. Bob lived in La Crosse for all his childhood.&nbsp; After high school, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving in the Air Force, Bob returned home to La Crosse. Upon returning home, Bob started working for his father as a truck driver. Bob welcomed three daughters during his first marriage to Charlotte Burton. They welcomed their first daughter, Julie Scheideman on Nov. 15, 1964. Robin Scheideman was born a few years later on June 17, 1969. Their youngest daughter, Patsy Kline, was born on Dec. 8,1973. After Bob’s marriage to Charlotte, he moved to Phillipsburg for work and this is where he eventually met the love of his life, Mary Rozean Scheideman. On Aug. 30, 1979, Bob and Mary were married in Norton. When Bob married Mary, she had two children, which Bob helped raise. Milissa Rhoades was born on June 16, 1968. Brian Scheideman is the youngest son of Mary, and he was born Aug. 19, 1975. Bob was an astounding father to all five children.After Bob and Mary were married, they moved to Ellinwood in 1980 for career opportunities. Bob enjoyed being a truck driver because he could explore the countryside. He drove a truck for 55 years. Eventually, Bob started working for Clear Creek in 1980, and continued his career with Clear Creek until he eventually retired in 1993. After retirement, Bob enjoyed woodworking and making gifts for his family. He would often travel to the Rozean Family Farm in Norton with Mary. Bob enjoyed working alongside his brother-in-law, John Rozean and his wife Mary.Bob loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play sports. They always knew he was in the crowd because he was the loudest one cheering. Bob also loved fishing with his son Brian and his son-in law, Mike. He enjoyed attending auctions and collecting trinkets. In his free time, Bob was entertained by word searches and sitting outside under his favorite tree with Mary. Most mornings you could find Bob at the local Zip Stop in Ellinwood enjoying a hot cup of coffee. Robert 'Bob' Scheideman, age 84

One of the world’s bright lights was extinguished when Mary Helen Dale Misegadis passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023 , after a lingering and debilitating illness, at the age of 79. Mary was the devoted wife to Eldon Misegadis, loving mother to Christina and grandmother to Sarah Helen, the lights of her life.

Since 1973, Mary has lived in Great Bend with her loving husband Eldon of 54 years, which is where they raised their daughter Christina. Mary’s eyes would always light up as she talked of her beloved daughter, Christina Misegadis Campbell, and cherished granddaughter, Sarah Helen Campbell, of Beavercreek, Ohio.

Born in Belmont Iowa, on January 10, 1944, to Joseph E. &amp; Helen (Brack) Dale, Mary grew up and attended schools in Garden City Kansas. She was the middle child of a close-knit family of seven. She was preceded in death by her parents, long-time Garden City residents, Joe and Helen Dale and is survived by her loving siblings, Jed (Gail) Dale, Don (Karen) Dale, Tom (Jane) Dale and Sarah (Harry) Dale Beyne. She was the dear aunt to her nieces and nephews Catherine, Lauren, Regan, Kara, Joe, Christopher and Helen, her sisters-in-law, Yvonne Lewis and Diane Mantz, and brother-in-law, Todd Misegadis, and her dear and lifelong friend, Tonya May. All grieve her passing but cherish the wonderful memories of family that Mary instilled in each of them, and the times spent together.

Following graduation from Garden City High School in 1962, Mary then graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma; she then received her Master of Science Degree in Speech Communications from Fort Hays State University, Hays. While working full time and maintaining her own home, Mary then achieved her Ph.D. in Education from Kansas State University. Mary was the consummate education professional. Known as Dr. Misegadis, she achieved many milestones during her illustrious 45-year career. She was well known and recognized for her significant contributions to program development, conferences, seminars, student enrollment and retention initiatives, special programs for revenue generation, migrant programs and community outreach. For these many efforts, Mary was a recipient of many honors and awards none of which meant as much to her as the accomplishments of those she taught and guided, and the gratitude expressed so frequently by her students and mentees as they were able to achieve their life goals.

Mary’s career began at LaCrosse High School where she was instructor of speech and debate and the school librarian. From there, she joined Barton County Community College (BCCC), rapidly progressing through the years until she ended her tenure with them as the Dean of Student Affairs. Her many accomplishments during this time included recruitment/enrollment programs, development of a degree audit program to track academic progress and the development of the “Young People’s College”. She also worked closely with the Kansas Highway Patrol, computerizing training hours and enabling tracking.

Leaving BCCC for National American University, Mary was the Vice President of Outreach Instruction as well as marketing and development. During these years, in addition to her frequent travels to K State, Mary traveled throughout the Midwest increasing enrollment and developing programmatic materials.

Never content to be idle, after retirement Mary became the USD 428 Migrant Facilitator for the Migrant Grant Program. She and Eldon spent many a Sunday evening providing “after study Pizza” to the students working to achieve college entrance.

Recognized for innovations outside of academic settings Mary developed industry-recognized training programs for the Oil and Gas Industry and the Law Enforcement Community. These programs were sustained over multiple years.

Her many honors included Who’s Who Among American’s Teachers; recipient of the award for Innovative Programs in Region IV West, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators; awards for Outstanding Vocational Program in State of Kansas and second place in National Competition. She was a frequent presenter at international and national conferences and was the Kansas Delegate – White House Conference of Libraries and Instructional Services.

Not confining her contributions to education, Mary was a three-term board member for the Great Bend Recreation Center and a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Mary was a wonderful person, or as her daughter Christina says “just a sweetheart, so kind to everyone.” She was generous, a woman of integrity and grace and a true leader. She was loved so much by family and her many friends. She will be greatly missed.

Mary Helen Dale Misegadis, age 79

BRIGHTON, Colo. — Patricia (Pat) Louise Graf, 82, died suddenly at Ridgeview Post Acute Center on September 14, 2023. She was diagnosed with dementia in 2013. Pat was born August 16, 1941 in Quinter, Kansas, the daughter of Balthazor (Bill) and Angela (VonLintel) Richmeier.&nbsp;

Pat was homeschooled prior to the 4th grade due to being bedridden with rheumatic fever. She graduated from Great Bend (KS) High School, class of 1960. 

After graduation she moved to the Denver, Colorado area where she worked for Russell Stover Candies Co.&nbsp; 

She returned to Kansas and married Arsenius Graf in July 1964. Together they had one son, Patrick. 

Pat retired after over 20 years of service from the Brighton School District 27J as head custodian of Henderson Elementary in Colorado.&nbsp; After retirement she worked part-time at Costco as a food sample distributor. 

She and her husband loved to travel and do artistic projects together. Pat was a member of VFW and Elks Lodge in Brighton, CO along with St. Augustine Church in Brighton and Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Northglenn, CO. Pat was also a member of TOPS before her illness.

Pat was a very talented artist and had four of her watercolor scenes auctioned off at the Alzheimer’s Foundation fundraiser. In addition to painting, she spent much of her spare time building and furnishing miniature doll houses.

&nbsp;She was predeceased by her husband Arsenius, son Patrick, parents Bill and Angela Richmeier, brothers&nbsp; R. Valerian, Francis (Frank), Gerald, and William, her sisters Agnes Geist, Margaret (Marge) Mealer, and Rosalie Urban.&nbsp; 

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Sarah Graf, grandsons Owen and Elliot Graf, sisters Sophie Breit, Jean Graf, and Roberta Rietcheck, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Patricia (Pat) Graf

Jo Ann Lawrence, 88, passed away on Sept. 19, 2023, at The Villa at Blue Ridge, Columbia, Mo. She was born on Oct. 5, 1934, in Kinsley, to John William “Jack” and Agnes (Bartlett) Montgomery. On Oct. 5, 1954, she married Howard Lawrence in Kinsley. He passed on June 19, 2007.

A former resident of Albert for over 60 years before moving to Columbia in 2015, Jo Ann spent her working years as an RN. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Albert, then the King Memorial United Methodist Church in Great Bend. Jo Ann had a servant heart and was dedicated to helping others both personally and professionally. She was an EMT with the Albert Fire Department, and always willing to help organize and work any church event, from soup suppers to soup kitchens. Jo Ann also enjoyed reading, gardening, canning, and sewing.

Survivors include two sons, Brent (Leanna) Lawrence of Columbia, Mo., and Bruce (Judy Demel) Lawrence of Great Bend; a daughter, Shirley (Jon) Deege of Larned; eight grandchildren, Justin Lawrence, Amanda Lawrence, Stefanie Perret, Coryell Deege, Camelle Wassenberg, Carley Martin, Ari Lawrence, and Nate Lawrence; three great-grandchildren, Kenny Steinborn, Zoie Steinborn and Jaradee Perret; an additional great-grandchild on the way; a sister, Norma (Leonard) Kelly of Auburn; and a sister-in-law, Barbara Montgomery.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Sue Ann Lawrence; a brother, George Montgomery; and an infant sister.

Jo Ann Lawrence, age 88

Harold Lee Miller, 88, passed away at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, KS on Sept. 19th, 2023. Born on Jan. 19, 1935 in Skedee, OK he was the son of Clarence Lee &amp; Lorene Evelyn (Whittle) Miller. A longtime Ellinwood resident, Harold graduated from Hudson HS in 1954 and married Elma “Jean” Sessler on Oct. 16, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood. They shared 67 years of memories together before her passing in 2022. Harold and Jean enjoyed roller skating, ice fishing, raising four children, creating keepsakes for craft shows, and took pride in their children and grandchildren’s’ accomplishments. The grandkids have many fond memories of fishing with Papa, and making deer sausage in his homemade smoker.&nbsp; Harold was an avid outdoorsman and craftsman who could make and repair almost anything. &nbsp;&nbsp;Harold was skilled from a variety of different occupations.&nbsp; He retired as maintenance from the Ellinwood High School. &nbsp;&nbsp;Harold was a member of St. Joseph Church and Ellinwood Fire Department.

Survivors include son, Steve (Kim) Miller, Ellinwood; daughters, Cheryln (Jon) Christian and Angela Behnke, Hillsboro; daughter-in-law, Pam Miller, Ponca City,&nbsp;grandchildren, Troy, Michelle, Jessica, Autumn, Ryan, Scott, Brayden &amp; Breauna; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elma “Jean” Miller; son, Nathan Miller; and sister, Peggy McGee.&nbsp;

 </figure>Harold Lee Miller, 88, passed away at Clara Barton Hospital in Hoisington, KS on Sept. 19th, 2023. Born on Jan. 19, 1935 in Skedee, OK he was the son of Clarence Lee &amp; Lorene Evelyn (Whittle) Miller. A longtime Ellinwood resident, Harold graduated from Hudson HS in 1954 and married Elma “Jean” Sessler on Oct. 16, 1954 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellinwood. They shared 67 years of memories together before her passing in 2022. Harold and Jean enjoyed roller skating, ice fishing, raising four children, creating keepsakes for craft shows, and took pride in their children and grandchildren’s’ accomplishments. The grandkids have many fond memories of fishing with Papa, and making deer sausage in his homemade smoker.&nbsp; Harold was an avid outdoorsman and craftsman who could make and repair almost anything. &nbsp;&nbsp;Harold was skilled from a variety of different occupations.&nbsp; He retired as maintenance from the Ellinwood High School. &nbsp;&nbsp;Harold was a member of St. Joseph Church and Ellinwood Fire Department.Survivors include son, Steve (Kim) Miller, Ellinwood; daughters, Cheryln (Jon) Christian and Angela Behnke, Hillsboro; daughter-in-law, Pam Miller, Ponca City,&nbsp;grandchildren, Troy, Michelle, Jessica, Autumn, Ryan, Scott, Brayden &amp; Breauna; 12 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. Harold Miller, age 88

Michael Glenn Folkerts, 55, passed away September 18, 2023, at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kan. He was born October 25, 1967, in Larned, to Glenn and Derinda (Murphy) Folkerts.

A longtime Great Bend resident, growing up on a farm near Timken, Mike worked in the manufacturing industry for many years, specifically in quality control for GBI. However, he recently discovered and embraced his career passion as a paraprofessional for USD 407 in Russell. Mike was known to have a spirited love for all things related to nature, spending any spare time he had at Lake Wilson, Cheyenne Bottoms, Quivira Refuge, and Rowe Sanctuary in Gibbon, Neb. He was an avid photographer, being able to capture the perfect sunset and any rare bird or wildlife that would happen by. Mike also had a keen interest in most sports, but had a life long enthusiasm for the Dallas Cowboys. Above all, Mike cherished time spent with his family and friends.

Survivors include his parents, Glenn and Derinda Folkerts of Great Bend; two daughters, Kyleene Folkerts of Great Bend and Alexis Folkerts of Hays; a sister, Lori Kohls of Great Bend; and nephew Jayce Kohls of Great Bend.

Mollie Ellen Staudinger,67, passed away on Sept. 17, 2023, at Ellinwood District Hospital. Born in Ellinwood on Feb. 6, 1956, she was the daughter of James Herbert and Mildred Agnes (Sherwood) Carpenter. Mollie married Wayne Staudinger on Jan. 26, 1996. Mollie worked in home health care.

Survivors include husband, Wayne Staudinger; sons, Jacob (Jaime) Oppenheimer and Dalton (Erin) Staudinger; and beloved grandchildren, Rylee, Khyler, Bowynn Oppenheimer and Ryker Staudinger.

James S. “Jimmy” Holopirek, 47, Timken, Kansas, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023, at his home.

Jimmy was born on Christmas Day, 1975, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Donald D. “Donnie” and Frances (Herrman) Holopirek. He was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1994 graduate of Otis-Bison High School, Otis, Kansas, he was a farmer and rancher.

He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Timken, Kansas, Knights of Columbus Council 2100, Olmitz, Kansas, the Western Fraternal Lodge, Timken, Kansas, and the Kansas Livestock Association, Topeka, Kansas. Through the years, he served on the boards of Banner Township, Mid-State Farmers Co-op, Rush Center, Kansas, and the Fireman’s Relief Association, Timken, Kansas. He assisted with staking duties for the Bohemian National Cemetery, Timken, Kansas. One of Jimmy’s greatest passions was the Timken Fire Department, Timken, Kansas, where he was a volunteer firefighter, and served as Fire Chief for many, many years.

Survivors include: his brother, Jay D. Holopirek, and wife, Heidi, La Crosse, Kansas; his sister, Julie A. Wagner, and husband, Terry, Rush Center, Kansas; his nephews and nieces, Matthew Wagner, and wife, Dekota, Marissa Wagner, Garrett Holopirek, Paige Holopirek, and Cade Holopirek; and his great nephew, Maverick Wagner, along with a host of extended family, friends and wonderful neighbors.
