Phyllis Gail Gifford, 94, passed away September 8, 2023, at Credo Senior Living, Basehor, Kansas. She was born on July 12, 1929 at Kansas City, Missouri, to Rodney &amp; Zella (LaClare) Wilcox. On November 2, 1952, Phyllis married Lawrence Mische in Trousdale, Kansas. He passed away on July 28, 1958. She then married Merle E. Gifford on June 1, 1969, in Larned, Kansas. He passed away on July 12, 2012.

Mrs. Gifford was a Basehor, Kansas resident coming from Bushton and Larned. She graduated from Wesley University and spent her working years as a registered nurse. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a long-time member of a bridge club with her best friends. Phyllis enjoyed crafts of all kinds: sewing, knitting, ceramics, wheat weaving and tatting. She also loved planting a garden, tending it and canning the rewards or enjoying her beautiful roses. Phyllis loved Precious Moments and was an avid collector of the figurines.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley (Drucilla) Mische of Richmond, Virgina, and Kirk (Annika) Mische of Basehor, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Lawrence Mische; Merle Gifford; son, Gary Gifford; two daughters, Kathy (James) Ray and Mary Nolan; grandson, David Ray; and great-great-granddaughter, Maribelle Sims.

Douglas Dean “Doug” Karst, 60, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 21, 1962, in Hays, the son of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. He graduated from Hays High School in 1982 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doug worked as a contract pumper, bus driver, and was a route driver for Hays Daily News. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafts, playing poker, especially Texas Hold’em, and was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of all, Doug loved his family.

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Karst and wife Mary of Hays and Mark Karst and wife Shannon of Victoria, two sisters, Dianne Schmidt and husband Gene of Great Bend and Maryln Schumacher and husband Larry of Lyons, two brothers-in-law, Pat Herrman of Sturgis, SD and Lance Smith and wife Courtney of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steven Karst, three sisters, Lois Herrman, Patty Karst, and Lanita Smith, and a nephew, Dustin Karst.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at Messiah Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. Douglas 'Doug' Karst, age 60

Garland “Garb” LeRoy Ensley, 100, passed away Sept. 6, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Jefferson, Kan., to Heber T. &amp; Lettie L. (Skinner) Ensley. As a young boy, Garb learned to weld having worked alongside his father in their “Ensley and Son” welding shop in Woodston, Kan.

Garb met the love of his life, Evalee M. Cooper, at a skating rink in his early twenties. They were married on June 25, 1947, in Stockton. In 1965, he and Evalee moved the family from Plainville to Great Bend. Then in 1974, Garb founded his own welding company “Garb’s Welding, Inc.” To this day, his sons continue to run the business and he would watch the cars go by on the highway from his front porch swing, often seeing one of the company trucks going by the house.

Garb was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, a man of God and was involved in his Faith. Though this was tested after the untimely passing of Evalee in September of 1995, he remained strong for his children and embraced the moments that he considered unforgettable. Spending time with his family was very important and they had many family fun outtings over the years including fishing, hunting, ball games, picnics, county fairs and roller skating.

When visiting with Garb, you were sure to have a learning experience. His recollection to capture special memories would make you smile when you least expected it. In the passing of Garb, may you remember one of his many sayings, “Accept the way life is now and be happy!”, “Enjoy your day!”, “Thank you much!” or “Take care!”

Survivors include, four sons, Ronald Ensley, Kevin Ensley and wife Tammy, Dr. Dennis Ensley and Gregory Ensley and wife Jan all of Great Bend; two daughters, Connie Ensley of Great Bend, and Bonnie Achatz and husband John of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Evalee; a daughter in law, Diane Ensley; one brother, Edwin; six sisters, Lucille, Neva, Virginia, Donna Lou, and twin sisters Retta and Gretta.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Rick Griffin presiding. Garland 'Garb' Ensley, age 100

Ada Leota Belt, 95, passed away Sept. 3, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born July 15, 1928, in Hooker, Okla., the daughter of Willard Earl and Ada Florence Parker Mead.

A longtime area resident, she worked as an LMHT at Larned State Hospital for 34 years. On July 1, 2009, she moved to Otis to be near her daughter, Linda Hughes.

On March 23, 1946, she married Lloyd Belt at Belpre; he preceded her in death on March 1, 1996.

Survivors include: daughter Linda Hughes and Keith Davis, Otis; daughter-in-law Joyce Belt, Kansas City, Mo.; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Willard and Ada Parker Mead; husband, Lloyd Belt; six brothers, Lloyd Mead, Roy Mead, Evart Mead, Vernon Mead, Eldon Mead and Carold Mead; and a son, Wesley Belt.

Larry Allan Fradd, 74, passed away after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s on September 4, 2023, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on April 22, 1949, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Kenneth and Cleone (Wesley) Fradd.

Spending the past few years in Great Bend, after spending time in Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Salina, Larry was a manager/owner of a John Deere dealership. He graduated from Great Bend High School, Class of 1968, then served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force Security Service during the Vietnam Conflict. After return from service, he received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fort Hays State University. Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing is his younger years.

Survivors include a daughter, Corry Kelly (Justin) of Great Bend, Kansas; two grandchildren, Raelynn and Kimber Rowe; four step-grandchildren, Hayden, Brooklyn, Baylie, and Harper Kelly; a brother, Gary Fradd of Nevada; a sister, Kristy McComb of Texas; and a co-parent, Maribeth Benker of Great Bend.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth “Sonny” Fradd, Jr.; and sister, Judy Sargent.

Francis Richard “Frank” Reifschneider, 74, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

Frank was born November 23, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Harold R. and Dorothy (Busch) Reifschneider. He had four brothers to share his early life with . . . Bob Reifschneider, La Crosse, Kansas, Paul Reifschneider (Michelle), Hays, Kansas, John Reifschneider (Debbie), Lenexa, Kansas, and Tom Reifschneider (Lesa), Rush Center, Kansas. He proudly claimed a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, daughter of Tom and Lesa Reifschneider.

He attended Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, then served four years in the United States Navy. He was a very proud patriot to his country and insisted on flying “Old Glory” at whatever home he resided.

In 1976, he married Sharilyn (Ellis) Kuhn in La Crosse, Kansas, and loved her children, Shelli, and Ryan as his own. His four grandchildren were the light of his life.

Frank and his family moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1986, where he was employed at several different banking institutions. In 2001, he and a close friend started a bank in Garden City, Kansas, and were very successful for 13 years before they were offered to sell the bank. He then retired, and he and Sharilyn moved to Wichita, Kansas, for seven years, where shortly thereafter, his health started to decline. They then decided they needed to return to their roots in La Crosse, Kansas, to be close to family and old friends.

Frank was a good “Uncle Dude”, a loving nick name from his nephews. He was full of compassion for the suffering of others and was not a complainer when his health turned downward. He was always up for a challenge and would dive in with great gusto on each until he succeeded. He, like Frank Sinatra, always “did it my way”. He will be missed by his old Navy buddies, his lifelong friends, his brothers, in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, but most of all, he will be deeply missed by his wife, his two children, and four grandchildren.

Per Frank’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation. There will be no funeral service.

Memorials are suggested to Rush County EMS, La Crosse, Kansas, or Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

 </figure>Francis Richard “Frank” Reifschneider, 74, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.Frank was born November 23, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Harold R. and Dorothy (Busch) Reifschneider. He had four brothers to share his early life with . . . Bob Reifschneider, La Crosse, Kansas, Paul Reifschneider (Michelle), Hays, Kansas, John Reifschneider (Debbie), Lenexa, Kansas, and Tom Reifschneider (Lesa), Rush Center, Kansas. He proudly claimed a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, daughter of Tom and Lesa Reifschneider.He attended Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, then served four years in the United States Navy. He was a very proud patriot to his country and insisted on flying “Old Glory” at whatever home he resided.In 1976, he married Sharilyn (Ellis) Kuhn in La Crosse, Kansas, and loved her children, Shelli, and Ryan as his own. His four grandchildren were the light of his life.Frank and his family moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1986, where he was employed at several different banking institutions. In 2001, he and a close friend started a bank in Garden City, Kansas, and were very successful for 13 years before they were offered to sell the bank. He then retired, and he and Sharilyn moved to Wichita, Kansas, for seven years, where shortly thereafter, his health started to decline. They then decided they needed to return to their roots in La Crosse, Kansas, to be close to family and old friends.Frank was a good “Uncle Dude”, a loving nick name from his nephews. He was full of compassion for the suffering of others and was not a complainer when his health turned downward. He was always up for a challenge and would dive in with great gusto on each until he succeeded. He, like Frank Sinatra, always “did it my way”. He will be missed by his old Navy buddies, his lifelong friends, his brothers, in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, but most of all, he will be deeply missed by his wife, his two children, and four grandchildren.Per Frank’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation. Bay was of the Methodist Faith. He worked on oil rigs and at Calp Fur with Trapper, skinning animals. He belonged to Sons of the American Legion.

On Sept. 19, 2005, he married Linda Lou Dellinger at Hoisington, she survives.

Other survivors include five children: Tiffany Finke, Nebraska, Amber Callaway, Colorado, Bay Robinson Jr., Nebraska, Colton Halstrom, Ellsworth, Dell and wife Sierra Poyner, of the home; numerous grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He went to join his mother, father, and sister and beloved friend Calvin “Trapper.”

Cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date.

Lucy worked as a CNA in two different nursing homes in Hoisington and eventually transferred into housekeeping at the Great Bend Manor. She also worked at Wendy’s in Great Bend and later worked for a short time at Walmart in Manhattan.

Survivors include: four children, Rhonda Carryer and husband Robert of Ogden, Darren Marsell and wife Kris of Lorraine, Douglas Marsell and wife Karen of Russell, and Daniel Krieger of Ottumwa, Iowa; sister Judy Kile and husband Don of Morris, Illinois; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Burtnett, mother, Ruth Mason, and stepfather, Shorty Mason, stepfather, Willard Yarger and stepmother, Clara Yarger, and husband Carl Krieger.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with family to greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Warren Stecklein. Inurnment will be in Hoisington Cemetery at a later date.

Lucinia 'Lucy" Krieger, age 79

Patty Jean Vratil, 79, passed away August 31, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. She was born February 1, 1944, in Independence, Kansas, to James and Lorene (Pundsack) Keeley. On January 29, 1966, Patty was united in marriage to Ronald Dean “Ron” Vratil.

Patty grew up in Radium, Kansas, graduating from Radium High School in 1962. Patty continued her studies at Fort Hays State University, graduating in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Education. Patty and Ron had attended grade school through college together. Their lives were entwined almost from the beginning; impossible to define where one began and the other ended. Their love story is an enduring one. After their union, they lived in Wichita for six years before moving to Great Bend in 1973. For 36 years, Patty was a secretary at USD 428 District Education Center before retiring in 2017. She was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish.

Patty loved spending time with her children, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren. Patty was passionate about travel and loved to plan family vacations. Maui was her favorite place on earth, and she derived such joy from sharing it with her entire family of thirteen in many return visits over the years.

Survivors include husband, Ron Vratil, of the home; two children, Kathy Brockway (Troy) of Salina and Jay Vratil (Jennifer) of Great Bend; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Lara and Aidan Brockway and Taylor Petracca (Garret), Brooke, Braden, and Kade Vratil; one sister, Linda McFarlane (Gene) of Durango, Colorado; many nephews and a niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, Eddy and Susie Vratil; and sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Tom Hipp.

Patty Vratil, age 79

Pastor Arlyn Leroy Thielenhaus, 80, passed away August 30, 2023, at Via Christ St. Francis, Wichita, Kan. He was born August 3, 1943, in Hays, Kan. to Elmer and Lena (Niedenthal) Thielenhaus. Arlyn married Carol Ray, then later married Janice (Verna) Winter December 5, 1981, in Great Bend, Kan.

Arlyn grew up on a farm six miles northeast of Bison, Kansas. In 1876 Arlyn’s Great Grandfather homesteaded a quarter of land that Arlyn farms to this day. Arlyn’s dad and mom were both school teachers before they moved to the farm in the late 1930’s. Arlyn began his education in a one room country school six miles north of Bison, and then in the sixth grade, moved to Bison to complete his elementary and high school education.

After graduating from Bison High School in 1961, Arlyn attended Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas and received a BA degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Psychology. From there he moved on to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where in 1969, he received his Master of Divinity Degree in Theology. From there he served churches in South Dakota, Canada, California, and Kansas. In 1977 he completed his Doctor of Ministry degree at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, California. Then in 1978, Arlyn completed his PHD at the California Graduate School of Theology.

Pastor Arlyn, a longtime resident of Great Bend, was the founding Pastor of Fellowship of Faith Church, where he was currently serving. Previously, Pastor Arlyn was the founding Sr. Pastor of Grace Community Church, Great Bend, Sr. Pastor of Alambra Baptist Church, Alambra, Calif., Sr. Pastor of Brentwood Baptist Church, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Sr. Pastor of Memorial Baptist Church, Parkston, S. Dak. With a servant’s heart, Arlyn faithfully served on the board of directors of Bison State Bank, Midstate COOP, and Almost Home, LLC.

Survivors include wife, Janice Thielenhaus, of the home; four sons, Tim Thielenhaus (Evelyn) of Novato, Calif., Mark Thielenhaus (Michelle) of Lodi, Calif., Sean Winter of Wichita, Ryan Winter (Lesli) of San Clemente, Calif.; eight grandchildren, Emily Thielenhaus, Crystal Thielenhaus, Bryden Thielenhaus, Chantel Thielenhaus, Madison Winter, Jade Winter, Grace Winter, Kate Winter; one brother, Pastor John Thielenhaus (Jane) of Norton, Ohio; and nieces and nephews.

Juanita Faye “Bobbi” Shultz, 84, passed away suddenly in Great Bend, KS on August 29, 2023. Born in Raymond, KS on December 29,1938, she was the daughter of Clarence &amp; Dora (Hughbanks) Messick. As a longtime Raymond resident, she graduated High School in Raymond and worked at the Jr. High School for 25+ years as a cook. She married Darrell Lee Shultz on March 17, 1957 at Raymond Baptist Church. They moved into her dream home in Ellinwood, in 2012. Bobbi was a member of the Raymond Baptist Church and Auxiliary. She always enjoyed a good card game. Bobbi was the best dressed mom/grandma around, especially dressing special on the holidays and having shoes for every occasion. She had a love for gnomes around the house and decorative chickens. She was a big supporter of the booster club. She loved watching her favorite sports teams; Chiefs, Jayhawks, Shockers and Royals while drinking a cold Coors Light with her four legged companion Pumper in her lap.

Survivors include son, James (Valerie) Shultz Chase, KS, daughters, Christi (Bruce) Thomson, Raymond, KS and Sheri (Ronnie) Hoover, El Dorado, KS, sister, Kay (John) Fore; grandchildren, Tiffany (Bobby) Webb, Tenelle (Brent) Nuest, Shawnda Wood, Jeremy Wood (Sierra), Dane Wood (Brinna), Jacob (Lyndsey) Hoover, Jaci (Ryan) Wolfe and 21 beloved great-grandchildren.

Betty J. Misegadis, 90, Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Monday, August 28, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed, La Crosse, Kansas.

Betty was born May 3, 1933, in rural Rush Center, Kansas, the daughter of Fredrick Samuel “Fred” and Frances Josephine “Fanny” (Schreiber) Keener. She was a lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas. A 1951 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, Betty was a homemaker and farm wife. Along with her husband, Dean, they owned and operated Dean’s TV &amp; Appliance, Rush Center and La Crosse, Kansas. They also owned and operated the cable tv system in McCracken, Kansas.

Betty loved being involved in her community. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, WELCA, Hope Lutheran Church Council, Hope Lutheran Church Quilt Club, and the Walnut Valley Saddle Club, all of Rush Center, Kansas. She was the last charter member of the Walnut Valley Senior Center, Rush Center, Kansas. She was a member of the La Crosse Chamber of Commerce, and the La Crosse Booster Club, both of La Crosse, Kansas. She was a 4-H leader. Her Unit could be found for many years manning the horticulture booth at the Rush County Fair. She loved holidays and was very proud of the Pride Park tree she was instrumental in planting, which is decorated every year with lights for Christmas.

On April 24, 1952, she married Dean Misegadis at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas. He preceded her in death April 21, 2014.

Survivors include: her children, Lois Misegadis, and her husband, Michael James, Ottawa, Kansas, Darlene Misegadis, Rush Center, Kansas, and

Steve Misegadis, and his wife, Kimberley Brand, Lenexa, Kansas; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three brothers, William “Bill” Keener, Samuel George Keener, and Ray “Pete” Keener.

Visitation will be Friday, September 1, 2023, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Church visitation will be Saturday, September 2, 2023, from 9:30 A.M. to 10:20 A.M. at Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.

Larry Laurence Nutting, 84, passed away August 28, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. He was born December 25, 1938, in Haskell County, Kan. to Harlie Edwin and Helen Luticia (Sanders) Nutting. He married Dorothy Welsch February 14, 1960, in Kinsley.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Larry was the Director of Manufacturing for Cross Manufacturing, Lewis, and Fuller Brush Industries, Great Bend, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kinsley and attended Encounter Church in Great Bend. He taught Sunday School and was passionate about spreading the Good News of Christ’s Salvation through his membership of Gideons International. Larry was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Royal Rangers Leader, and enjoyed nature, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include, his wife Dorothy of the home; a daughter, Lori Katz and husband Randy of Wichita; two sons of the heart, Mark Welsch and Troy Welsch; a brother, Michael Nutting (Carla) of Crosby, Texas; a sister, Rita Giles of Saskatchewan, Canada; two grandchildren, Tara Katz (Tyson Bean) and Kelsey Aitchison (Samuel); and one great grandson, Asher Aitchison. Elias M. Gonzalez, 71, passed away peacefully August 27, 2023, surrounded by his family at his home in Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on February 5, 1952, in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango, Mexico, to Candelario and Concepcion (Martinez) Gonzalez. In 1970, he married Irene Tinoco in Guadalupe Victoria, Durango.

A resident of Great Bend for 33 years coming from Wichita, Elias worked as a manufacturer at McDonald Tank &amp; Equipment. He was a member of the Prince of Peace Parish, attending services at St. Rose of Lima. Elias enjoyed going on walks, gardening, vintage cars, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Gonzalez, of the home; four sons, Armando (Irma) Gonzalez, Rigo (Laura) Gonzalez, Jorge (Rafaela) Gonzalez, Isaias (Daisy) Gonzalez, all of Great Bend, Kansas; a daughter, Victoria (Vince) Enfield of Goodard, Kansas; fifteen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; five brothers; and four sisters.

Jacob Leo Stremel, 88, passed away August 26, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born April 23, 1935, in Greenbush, Kansas to Jacob john and Anna (Westhoff) Stremel. He married Margaret (Peggy) Heckele April 9, 1956, in Ellinwood, Kansas.

Jake, a longtime resident of Great Bend, worked in the oilfield and was a welder for O'Neill Tank and McDonald Tank and Equipment, and was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose.

Jake was a true outdoorsman, his favorite pastime was hunting and fishing. He competed in trap shooting competitions at the local and national level. And he supported gun rights as a member of the NRA. He worked with regional and national federations to support conservation and hunting rights

Survivors include his wife Peggy Stremel of the home; two daughters, Susan Read (George) of Great Bend, and Lisa Richmeier (Greg) of Great Bend; four grandchildren, John Read, Abbey Read, Shayla Richmeier and Bryce Richmeier; and two great grandchildren, Hannah Caton and Scarlett Wilcox. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Stremel, and sister, Mary Catherine Nyland.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 31, 2023, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will follow at Lakin-Comanche Cemetery, Ellinwood.

Arletta M. Fish, 85, of Raymond, KS, passed away August 25, 2023, at Hospice House in Hutchinson. Arletta was born February 16, 1938, near Susank, KS to Marion E. and Leona (Susank) Byers.&nbsp;

Arletta graduated from Hoisington High school in 1956. On March 23, 1958, she married Charles H. Fish in Hoisington, KS, sharing just over 57 years of marriage.

Arletta is survived by a sister, Loree Gilpin of Pratt and a brother, Jim (Jacque) Byers of Joplin, MO. Two sons, Craig R. (and wife) Fish of Great Bend, and Kirk L. (Tammy) Fish of Raymond. One daughter, Karyn M. (Kurt) Schemm of Derby. Six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers and two sisters.

Arletta worked for USD 401 Chase/Raymond as a school bus driver for many years while assisting Charles with the family business, Fish Service Station in Raymond.

Arletta was a member of Raymond Baptist Church where she organized music, sang and played the organ for 54 years. Arletta enjoyed music, quilting, sewing, baking and an occasional slot machine. She was well known in her community for her ‘Arletta’s famous pies’.&nbsp;

Celebration of life will be 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023, at Raymond Community Center. Friends may sign the book from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Elliott Mortuary, until the day of the service.

Larry was born April 29, 1942, in Great Bend, Kansas. He was a resident of Rush County, Kansas, for 40+ years. He was the light plant supervisor for the City of La Crosse before his retirement.

Larry enjoyed electronics, he especially enjoyed repairing and tinkering with CB radios.

On September 11, 1971, he married Linda M. Bitter in Great Bend, Kansas.

Survivors include: his wife, Linda Doty, La Crosse, Kansas; one son, Eddie Doty, Kansas City, Missouri; one daughter, Tonya Doty, Salina, Kansas; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Mike Doty, and Carl Doty.

Per Larry’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation. No services will be held at this time.

Sonja Pauline Julian, 62, passed away on Aug. 25, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi - St. Francis in Wichita. She was born on Dec. 2, 1960, in Great Bend, to Eldon and Delpha (Anthony) Wilson. Sonja was married to Clay Julian; they later divorced.

A lifetime resident of Great Bend, Sonja sewed mats at USA Gym Supply for 23 years. She attended the Nazarene Church in her younger years and was a member of the Eagles Lodge #646. Sonja could be found bartending many events in her spare time, spending time with her family, and bragging about her grandchildren.

Survivors include a son, C.J. (Melissa) Julian of Ozark, Ark.; daughter, Misty (Jon) Donecker of Pawnee Rock; five grandchildren, Serenity and Jace Julian, Hunter, Gage and Temprance Donecker; three brothers, Bill (Diana) Smith and Wade Wilson, all of Newton, and Kevin (Candi) Wilson of Hutchinson; two sisters, Donna (Tom) Boese of Cimarron, and Janet (Terry) Lewis of Jacksonville, Ark.; and numerous extended family members.

Cory Johnson, 39, passed away August 23, 2023 in Larned.

He was born August 24, 1984 in Great Bend, the son of Roger C. Johnson and Sherri L. Schmidt. He was a lifetime Larned and Pawnee Rock resident. He worked at Larned State Hospital Cafeteria and Pawnee County Grain Elevator and Co-op. He was a Larned High School graduate and enjoyed listening to music, fishing and walking.

Survivors include: his parents, Roger (Debora Fox) Johnson, and Sherri Schmidt; daughter, Faith; brothers, Dustin Johnson, Hutchinson and Denton Johnson, Granberry, Texas; grandmother, Vera Schmidt, Larned.

Cory Johnson, age 39

Barbara Louise Ann Merry was born Sept. 17, 1941, at St. Rose Hospital in Great Bend. She was the eldest daughter of Paul and Hermine (Hoffman) Strecker. She was baptized at St. John Lutheran Church in Russell and confirmed her faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia in 1956. She started first grade at a small country school in Wheatland Township, Barton County, knowing only German which she quickly found was not approved by the teacher. She then attended elementary school at District #66 in Galatia.

In 1958, she attended Parks Business School in Denver, Colo. where she met and married Frank Garcia. They had a child, Lynette Ann, in 1961 and divorced in 1964. She then moved back to Kansas. In 1970, she moved to Dubois, Wyo. and lived there for the next 35 years. She met Roscoe Merry and they were married on March 30, 1977 in Riverton, Wyo. They built a home west of Dubois overlooking the Dunoir Valley. While in Wyoming she had a variety of jobs, including log scaler, timber assistant for the US Forest Service, bank teller, bookkeeper, relief mail carrier, assistant town clerk and director of Senior Center and the Dubois Chamber of Commerce. 

Barbara was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Dubois for over 30 years, and a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Galatia since moving back to Kansas in 2005 with Roscoe and Lynette. They purchased a farm west of Galatia where she lived until Mary 31, 2023. Barbara died on August 17, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Hays, after a cancer diagnosis in June.

Barb and Roscoe loved their lives in Dubois, embracing the activities of the west including horses, hunting, and the Rocky Mountains. She loved the Lord and was ready to leave this life and continue in the life promised by her Christian faith. Thanks be to God!

She was predeceased by her daughter, Lynnette, in September 2007 and husband Roscoe on Aug. 31, 2012, also a stepson, Ron Merry and her parents.

Survivors include; her sisters, Melba Haines of Skiatook, Oklahoma, Karen Maier and husband Alan of Otis, Kansas; stepson, Dan Merry of Monmouth, Illinois; nephews, John Dietz and wife Lisa of Skiatook, Oklahoma, James Dietz and wife Natasha of Garnder, Kansas, Brian Maier and wife Janelle of Otis, Kansas, Tim Maier and wife Stephanie of Hoisington, Kansas, and Eric Maier and wife Karen of Bison, Kansas; and her feline friend, Fancy.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 25, 2023, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Wayne Baldyga presiding. Family will greet friends at the church prior to service starting at 1 p.m. Burial will follow service in Fairview Cemetery, Galatia.

Barbara Merry, age 81

Margaret Helena Schlegel, 98, died August 18, 2023, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington, Kansas. She was born July 8, 1925, in Otis, Kansas, the daughter of Fred and Elsie (Schneider) Lebsack. Margaret was a graduate of Otis High School.

On October 6, 1946, she married Samuel Schlegel in Otis, Kansas. He preceded her in death on April 2, 2006.

A lifetime Otis resident Margaret was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She kept a meticulous lawn and loved working in her flower garden, no weed stood a chance in her yard.

She is survived by a daughter, Connie Galusha of Otis; a sister, Katherine Esser of Madison, Wisconsin; and a great granddaughter, Adison Galusha of Great Bend.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Donald W. Schlegel, grandson, David Galusha, brother, Harold Lebsack, and sisters, Sonia Nuss and Ione Leatherman.

Per Margaret’s wishes her body has been willed to the University of Kansas School of Medicine for research. Cremation will then take place and a burial will be at a later date in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, Otis, Kansas.

Margaret Schlegel, age 98

Ricky James “Rick” Phelps, 62, peacefully passed away on August 15, 2023, at his home in rural Ellinwood, Kansas. He was born on June 30, 1961, in Great Bend, Kansas, to James and Eunice (Williams) Phelps. On June 7, 1997, he married Kathryn “Kathye” Ramsey in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. She survives.

A lifetime resident of Barton County, Rick was the owner/operator of Dogwood Tree Service. Rick was a dedicated follower of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Great Bend, NRA, and former member of the Christian Motorcycle Association. He was a gun enthusiast, coin collector, enjoyed horses and mules, but especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Devin (Kate) Ramsey, Keylin (significant other, Shaelee) Phelps, and Brevan Phelps, all of Great Bend; three daughters, Amanda (Jeremy) King of Pratt, Madilyn Phelps of Salina, and Isabella Phelps of Ellinwood; five grandchildren with two more on the way, Dylan, Ryan, Lauren, Renly and Aryiah; his mother, Eunice Lane of Hoisington; and two brothers, Damon (Brenda Roat) Phelps of Hoisington, and Jimmy (Laurie) Krebs of Newark, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his father, James; and a son, Brandon Lee Phelps.

Visitation will be held from Noon to 8:00 p.m., Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 18, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home with Pastor Don Fisher presiding. Ricky 'Rick' Phelps, age 62

Barbara “Joyce” Barnard, 83, died August 15, 2023, at Smokey Hill Health and Rehabilitation, Salina, Kansas. She was born August 22, 1939, at the family home in Wayne County, Illinois, the daughter of William “Harold” and Willena Maurine (Molt) Hosselston. Joyce graduated from Fairfield High School, Fairfield, Illinois in 1957.

On October 13, 1956, she married David Paul “Pete” Barnard in Johnsonville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 4, 2014.

Pete and Joyce moved to Hoisington in the early 70’s and she went to work for the Hoisington Lutheran Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide. Joyce was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Hoisington. She enjoyed fishing trips with the family and will always be remembered by her family as a great cook, especially her homemade bread and pies.

Survivors include her four children; Kim Landers and husband Eric of Hoisington; Bryan Barnard and wife Diana of Pratt, Brad Barnard and wife Laura of Hoisington, and Kara Gale and husband Cory of Winfield; 11 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren and 2 more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three-year-old son, Ricky Barnard, sister, Virginia Cable, and brother, Gene Hosselton.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday with family to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 21, 2023, at Hoisington City Cemetery, with Ron Bailey presiding.
