Storm Special Olympics Team marked a busy 2024-25 athletics campaign, consisting of bowling in early fall, basketball and cheerleading last winter, then finishing with track and field in the spring. The athletics season began with bowling balls rumbling down hardwood lanes last September, gained momentum with strong showings by Storm Team members at State basketball and cheerleading last winter, then surged across the finish line in early June with the anchor of the 4x100 meter relay team at the state track and field championships.

All total, Storm Special Olympics was represented by 57 athletes competing in at least one sport; exceeding last year’s total participation number by 13 athletes. And the team’s geographic reach expanded beyond Barton County this year, bringing in athletes from Pawnee and Stafford counties. Participation numbers have progressively increased over the last several years, since the program took two years off from 2020-21 because of the COVID Pandemic.

“To watch participation climb is motivation for us coaches and volunteers,” said Storm Local Program Coordinator Amanda Hammond. “It lets us know we are doing things right. More than medals, we strive to create a fun and inclusive program where our athletes take pride in participation. I feel like we are moving in the right direction, especially with our numbers increasing so much over the past few years.”

During its most recent season last spring, 35 athletes competed in track and field. Thirty-three Storm Athletes competed in the Summer Games June 6-8 at Maize High School in activities ranging from field events like long jump, softball throw and turbo javelin, to walking and running events. Storm Athletes competing in state track were: Kaleb Beckham, James Boehnke, Tammy Boele, Darren Brown, Michael Burress, Sarah Burrill, Chris Devine, David Edwardson, Auggie Estrella, Logan Gregg, Roger Guthals, DJ Johnson, Audrey Koester, Austin Levingston, Donnie Lewis, Rian Lewis, Ronnie Lewis, Michael Manka, Beth Mattocks, Rita Mestas, Cole Morin, Kaleb Nixon, Trace Ritterhouse, Cierra Roberts, Tori Rose, Curtis Schneweis, Elisa Shores, Steve Smolik, Abbey Stanley, Josh Trimmer, Debbie Wasinger, Wain Waymaster, and Jim Wonsetler.

The spring season started just mere days after Storm’s participation in the state basketball tournament and cheerleading championships in Hays. The spring season wasn’t without challenges. Inclement weather and a scheduling conflict for the practice facility meant that Storm Team missed two weeks of practices. Then, inclement weather in late April caused cancelation of the regional meet. Rainey weather leading up to the state meet meant that some events were delayed or moved, and shot put at the state meet was cancelled because of soggy field conditions. However, none of that deterred Storm Athletes from giving their best efforts and recording stellar performances at the state championships.

“Certainly, we had to overcome adversity this year,” explained Hammond. “Going out there with the chaos of the season, with the chaos of weather, with the chaos of competing among 1,000 other athletes, Storm Athletes did exceptionally well and they took everything in stride.

They were proud of themselves for how they did and achieving their own personal bests, in many cases. They put in the work needed to improve during the season, and by the end of the season, they could see the outcome. It may not be that they always got first place, but most of them improved from where they were at the start of the year.”

During the meet, Hammond said anxiety set in for some of the athletes because of schedule changes, but she credited the coaching staff of Bri Saunders, Emily Komarek, Andrew Rush, and Denice Whetham for helping to bring order and calm to the evolving situations. She also credited volunteers Jim Boehnke, Carole Edwardson, and Boe Levingston, along with attending family members and staffing of Storm Athletes for providing invaluable help during the three-day event.

“The athletes really trusted our coaches and our coaches did such a tremendous job with the time-and-location changes to get our athletes where they needed to be,” said Hammond. Beyond coaches’ efforts, we benefited with help from athletes’ family members, along with staff during the three-day event. It really does take a village to have so many athletes participating in a meet that lasts several days. We are so fortunate to have their support.”

A Storm Team highlight of the Summer Games happened during the opening ceremony on June 6 when Hammond read the “Coaches Oath” to attendees. She earned the honor by being recognized as “Coach of the Year” by Special Olympics Kansas last winter. Additionally, James Boehnke represented Storm Athletes during the “Walk of Champions” to open the Summer Games.

Following the hustle and bustle of the successful track meet, it was a quiet ride back to Great Bend for the team. For many, the end of track season marked nine months of practice and competition.

“At the end of track, I think they were ready for a summer break,” said Hammond, who has coached Storm Team for 15 years. ”But, then, they’ll be eager to get back into it, starting with bowling in September. The start of a new season always brings excitement.”

Central Kansas Special Olympics team grows beyond Barton Co.

The Shafer Art Gallery will host a free Family Day event this summer, open to all ages from 9 a.m. to noon July 11.

The event is inspired by the current exhibition, “Collector’s Edition,” and will offer hands-on activities highlighting the fun and meaning behind collecting. Attendees can enjoy interactive games, creative activity stations, and snacks, all designed to encourage curiosity and engagement. Local businesses and community organizations will also participate, offering collection-themed booths, giveaways, and more.

No registration is required. Families are encouraged to attend and explore the world of collecting.

Fuller Industries Inc. conducted a physical inventory of its sprawling raw materials warehouse on Tuesday, a regular procedure that reconciles its system records with actual stock. 

Despite ongoing production of the company's cleaning products, as many staff members as possible converged on the 100,000 square-foot raw material warehouse and 80,000 square-foot finished goods warehouse.

Armed with clipboards, they meticulously counted boxes, totes, bottles, drums, product ingredients, and other items lining the towering shelves. 

"This is important so we can confirm that what we have in our system is what is on our shelves," said General Manager Joe Mann, who helped spearhead the effort which took nearly 30 people a full 12 hours, "We do smaller, focused cycle counts on particular things monthly or quarterly, but we like to do a full building inventory at least once a year.”

The last full building count was done in September of 2024. 

“Although it’s a lot of work for a lot of people, it’s important for so many reasons. We all know how important it is and how having an accurate inventory helps everyone. We order a bunch of pizza, roll up our sleeves, have fun and get it done.”

It’s Fourth of July season!&nbsp; Time for barbecues and Chinese-made fireworks (watch out for those tariffs).&nbsp; For Independence Day, I suggest also celebrating some folks that really make America great—immigrants.

Throughout our history, waves of immigrants have made our country stronger, bringing in new Americans willing to risk everything to live the American dream.&nbsp; Immigrants believe the inscription at the base of the Statue of Liberty, “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.” They work hard, raise families, and establish communities and businesses. Naturalized citizens take a citizenship test and an oath in which they swear off allegiance to any other government or leader.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Today, politicians and pundits spew outrage at the suggestion that the U.S. was founded on slavery and the removal of Native Americans.&nbsp; It’s a plain fact that these things happened.&nbsp; Yet they do not need to define us.&nbsp; Himself the grandson of Irish migrants, President Kennedy offered a far more inspiring vision in his 1958 book,&nbsp;A Nation of Immigrants,&nbsp;which celebrated the American story. President Reagan was pro immigration too.

America is so much more than our sins of the past–and present.&nbsp; We are a dynamic, vibrant country that has repeatedly reinvented ourselves.&nbsp; Today, studies show that immigrants contribute far more to the U.S. economy than they take out– and yes, that is after accounting for public welfare benefits.&nbsp; Immigrants stabilize the population of communities that would otherwise be declining, including many in rural Kansas.&nbsp; They take jobs that many native-born Americans will not.&nbsp; Studies show that immigration helps relieve one of America’s worst economic challenges today:&nbsp; the housing shortage. While immigrant families need housing too, the fact that many work in construction more than offsets that, resulting in a net increase in the nation’s housing stock.

Immigrants enrich our culture, while also becoming a part of it.&nbsp; Migrant families typically assimilate within three generations.&nbsp; The children of immigrants from non-English speaking countries are usually bilingual and serve as translators for their parents.&nbsp; The immigrants’ grandchildren typically speak English as their first and perhaps only language.

A few years ago, TLC aired&nbsp;All American Muslim,&nbsp;about a Lebanese American family in suburban Detroit. The show was discontinued, but not because of prejudice. Instead, the family’s daily life was so typical, so suburban, so&nbsp;American, the show simply lacked the drama that reality TV viewers expect. Just another American family, nothing to see here.

Immigration enriches our culture. For example, German immigrants brought us the Christmas tree.&nbsp; Today, more and more Americans observe&nbsp;Dia de los Muertes&nbsp;(Day of the Dead), a celebration of our ancestors. The day originated in Mexico and is becoming mainstream here.

If you’re looking to binge watch something patriotic this weekend, I recommend&nbsp;Finding Your Roots&nbsp;with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.&nbsp; Streaming on the PBS app Passport, the show features famous Americans whose ancestors come from all over the world.&nbsp; For most guests, researchers document their family history in the old country as well as their journeys to the United States, uncovering stories of courage, sacrifice, and hard work. &nbsp; Of course, some find scandal in their genealogy too.&nbsp; Many guests are brought to tears when Gates shows them a timeline of their family history.&nbsp; Even when records are unavailable, DNA testing and other research can help uncover more information about their past than they ever imagined possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This Fourth of July, celebrate something that really makes the USA great. Welcome immigrants into your community and learn their American stories—and yours.

The show was discontinued, but not because of prejudice. Instead, the family’s daily life was so typical, so suburban, so&nbsp;American, the show simply lacked the drama that reality TV viewers expect. Just another American family, nothing to see here.Immigration enriches our culture. For example, German immigrants brought us the Christmas tree.&nbsp; Today, more and more Americans observe&nbsp;Dia de los Muertes&nbsp;(Day of the Dead), a celebration of our ancestors. The day originated in Mexico and is becoming mainstream here.If you’re looking to binge watch something patriotic this weekend, I recommend&nbsp;Finding Your Roots&nbsp;with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.&nbsp; Streaming on the PBS app Passport, the show features famous Americans whose ancestors come from all over the world.&nbsp; For most guests, researchers document their family history in the old country as well as their journeys to the United States, uncovering stories of courage, sacrifice, and hard work. &nbsp; Of course, some find scandal in their genealogy too.&nbsp; Many guests are brought to tears when Gates shows them a timeline of their family history.&nbsp; Even when records are unavailable, DNA testing and other research can help uncover more information about their past than they ever imagined possible.&nbsp;&nbsp;This Fourth of July, celebrate something that really makes the USA great. Wheatland Electric Cooperative Inc., recently completed a member-wide customer satisfaction survey in which members scored WEC as one of the highest rated utilities in the nation.

Both paper and online survey responses were sent to the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI®), a company that measures customer satisfaction across multiple industries throughout the entire United States.

In 2025, WEC earned an ACSI® score of 92 out of 100—matching their highest score to date. This score ranks WEC in the top 5% of electric co-ops surveyed nationwide, according to Touchstone Energy, a network of nearly 900 electric cooperatives nationwide. WEC has maintained a score of 90 or higher for three consecutive years.

“Achieving an ACSI score of 92 for the second time is a remarkable milestone,” said Bruce W. Mueller, CEO/general manager. “For years, we’ve committed ourselves to boosting member satisfaction through a variety of programs—like our capital credits program, new events tailored for young adults and families, backing community projects with our Sharing Success Fund, and supporting local food banks every fall through Power the Pantry. Our members’ positive feedback truly energizes us and reinforces why we’re here—to serve and empower our cooperative community.”

Members at WEC’s 2025 Annual Meeting, held on April 23, 2025, across eight meeting locations in southwest and central Kansas, were asked to complete the survey, with the option of remaining anonymous prior to submission. Over 250 written responses were collected and submitted to ACSI, as well nearly 100 additional online responses through the website.

WEC’s score is higher than all 2025 investor-owned utility scores and municipal utility scores. It places WEC 18 points higher than the average investor-owned utility score of 74, as well as 17 points higher than the municipal utilities score of 75, per the industry ratings in the 2025 ACSI Utility Study. They may not be burning the midnight oil, but Barton County commissioners and other county officials have been working long hours over the past few weeks as the 2026 budget planning process comes down to the wire.

“Commissioners have been at the Courthouse until 6 p.m. the last two weeks trying to keep our budget as low as possible,” said District 3 Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson.

The Barton County budget process involves several key steps:

· Elected officials, department heads and outside agencies receiving county funding submit preliminary budget requests for the upcoming operating year, typically in May.

· County Administrator Matt Patzner and the commissioners review these requests. Meetings with those involved are held in June and July to discuss and revise the proposed budget.

· Another factor commissioners and officials must consider is the Revenue Neutral Rate.

The Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) is a mechanism designed to ensure that taxing entities, like the county itself, do not collect more property tax revenue than they did the previous year, after accounting for changes in assessed valuation. This rate is calculated to maintain the same level of revenue generation as the prior year, adjusted for any increase or decrease in the total assessed value of property.

The RNR, or Truth in Taxation Act, was passed by the Kansas Legislature in March 2021. Taxing entities that plan to exceed the rate must also hold an RNR hearing, in addition to their regular budget hearing.

· The proposed budget is presented to the public at a hearing during a commission meeting in August. This allows citizens to provide input and feedback on the proposed spending plan and tax levy.

· After the public hearing and at the same meeting, the commissioners formally adopt the budget, including the spending plan and mill levy.

This year’s weather has delayed harvest and left many wheat growers with fields of low-test weight and sprouted grain. This damage causes large discounts at the elevator because the grain does not meet standards for milling or export. Wheat that does not meet market specs still have value as livestock feed either as part of supplements for grazing cattle or in mixed diets to growing and finishing cattle.

Feeding Value and Nutritional Considerations

Despite its poor appearance,&nbsp;low test weight or sprouted wheat retains much of its energy and protein content as animal feed. In fact, the nutrient composition often compares well to regular wheat:·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Crude Protein: Often 12–14%, depending on variety and growing conditions.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN): Generally, 80–85%, making it a high-energy feed.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sprouting Effect: Enzymatic changes during sprouting may actually increase starch digestibility, though spoilage is a concern if storage is poor.

The main challenge is balancing the ration correctly. Wheat is&nbsp;high in starch and low in fiber, so overfeeding can lead to digestive upsets like&nbsp;acidosis&nbsp;or&nbsp;founder&nbsp;making feeding management a key consideration.

Tips for Feeding Damaged Wheat Safely

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Limit Inclusion: Start with low levels and increase gradually. &nbsp; &nbsp;Supplementing grazing cattle: limit feeding to 0.3 to 0.5% of bodyweight per feeding or as only ½ of less of a supplement fed at a higher rate. No more than 2 to 3 pounds per day for a growing calf or 4 to 6 pounds for a mature beef cow. Increase feeding frequency when feeding wheat, doubling the feeding rate and feeding every other day is not recommended. &nbsp; &nbsp;Growing and finishing cattle on mixed rations: wheat can replace part of the corn. We recommend no more than 1/3 of the total ration or ½ of the grain in the concentrate portion of the ration. Feeding management becomes more important when feeding highly digestible grains like wheat.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Process with Care: Processing increases digestibility of wheat by 20 to 30%. Coarsely rolling wheat improves digestibility but avoid fine grinding. When processing is too fine the starch in wheat is digested too fast in the rumen and increases the risk of ruminal acidosis.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Balance the Ration: Wheat should be fed with adequate&nbsp;roughage&nbsp;(hay, silage, or straw) to maintain rumen health. Avoid low-roughage low-fiber diets.

4.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Monitor Intakes Closely: Watch for signs of overeating, scours, or bloating when feeding sprouted or damaged wheat.

Storage is Key: Keep wheat dry and cool. Sprouted grain with higher moisture is especially vulnerable to spoilage.

Test for Mycotoxins or Mold: Sprouted wheat may be more prone to spoilage. If stored improperly, mold and toxins can develop. Always test suspect lots before feeding.

Feeding downgraded wheat can be a benefit for cattle producers to gain access to a high-energy feed at a discount — provided it’s done safely and with proper nutrition support. Before incorporating low-quality wheat into your feeding program, consult with a&nbsp;livestock nutritionist&nbsp;or&nbsp;Extension specialist&nbsp;to balance the ration and ensure safety with careful management.

BOOR: Making the most of damaged wheat

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported as soon as possible at<a target="_blank" href="https://links-1.govdelivery.com/CL0/https:%2F%2Fwww.kdhe.ks.gov%2F1163%2FReport-an-Illness%3Futm_medium=email%26utm_source=govdelivery/1/01000197d1fc0c82-325eeac1-8c29-4b89-8a41-e69943e55c84-000000/XUgZRTtQyyi3kaNBm1C3v7iF5_OFZ0V5uM5YeL6Nj4M=412">&nbsp;kdhe.ks.gov/1163</a>.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Custom harvesters help Kansas farmers wrap up wheat harvest

The Kansas Department of Transportation opened bids in the mid-June for
the no passing zones signing project in the southwest quadrant of Barton
County. There were four bids with the lowest one being submitted by Sign-Up
LTD for $69,542. 

Barton County Engineer Barry McManaman said this is the second of
three phases of the project.


"The design part of it came in slightly over $34,000," said McManaman. "This construction part came in at $69,542. The next thing we'll talk about is the inspection part of the agreement."

The Barton County Commission approved the bid from Sign-Up with a 4-0 vote at
Tuesday’s meeting. 

The total project was estimated to cost $171,000, but
McManaman said so far the expense is under budget at $160,931.79.


"That's good news because that means the project will be 100 percent paid for by KDOT," said McManaman. "Unless we have some unforeseen non-participating cost, I don't see us exceeding that limit."

The contractor will install no passing pennants at the beginning of each no
passing zone on county blacktop roads in the southwest portion of the county.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend's June named director with The Bricks in Downtown Hays

As Kansas families prepare for July 4 weekend celebrations, Kansas Gas Service is reminding residents about critical safety practices for natural gas grills, fire pits, and outdoor lighting that will help keep everyone's Independence Day festivities safe and enjoyable.

"The July 4 holiday is the busiest grilling period of the year, which also means natural gas has a huge role to play in supporting families and friends this season," said Dawn Tripp, manager of Public Relations at Kansas Gas Service. "Natural gas grills, fire pits, and outdoor lighting offer convenient and reliable opportunities for summer entertainment. It's also crucial that families know how to use them safely, especially during peak celebration times."

To help families enjoy the holiday with peace of mind, Kansas Gas Service offers the following safety tips:

• Inspect natural gas connections and hoses for cracks, brittleness, or leaks. Many grills have been unused since last summer. • Perform the soapy water test on all connections. If you see bubbles, that indicates a leak that must be repaired before use. • Position your grill at least 10 feet away from your home, deck railings, overhanging branches, and party decorations. • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and make sure someone at your gathering knows how to use it. • Clear the area around grills and fire pits of decorations, chairs, and other flammable materials.

• Never leave your grill unattended while in use. Holiday distractions increase this risk. • Keep children and pets at a safe distance from all cooking areas and fire pits. • Use long-handled grilling tools to maintain distance from heat. • Avoid loose clothing and tie back long hair when operating grills. • Clean grease traps regularly to prevent dangerous flare-ups.

After Grilling: • Turn off the natural gas supply to the grill. • Allow grills and fire pits to cool completely before leaving them unattended. • Properly extinguish fire pits and dispose of ashes safely. • Clean cooking surfaces to prevent buildup and potential fire hazards.
