Last year, the Great Bend area received rainfall the day before the 4th
of July. That brought a smile to Great Bend Fire Chief Brent Smith’s face,
knowing moisture would help reduce grass fires during the fireworks-filled
holiday. 

This year’s forecast does not look as favorable for rain prior to the
holiday, so Smith and the rest of the first responders remind citizens to use
caution on where they are discharging their fireworks.


"If there is tall grass around, try to stay away from it," said Smith. "Keep an eye on the wind and where you're shooting. Everybody likes to shoot them in the street because it's away from their house, but that can hinder us from getting there. There's a double-edged sword to everything. You want them in the street because it's all concrete but you want them out of the street so we can get through if we need to."

The call volume was down last year, but the previous year the Great Bend Fire
&amp; EMS responded to more than 60 calls on the holiday. From fires to
injuries, Smith said there are children and adults that need to pay heed of
safety advice.


"You have people that are missing parts of fingers or serious burns because of fireworks," said Smith. "Be mindful of that. They can cause serious injuries. Injuries to eyes and burn injuries alone are very painful. Be careful...that's what we stress."

Anyone interested in a block party to shoot fireworks needs to fill out a
permit at City Hall and only use city-issued barricades.&nbsp;The legal discharge of fireworks in Great Bend is from 10 a.m. to midnight on July 4th only. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While yields and protein levels remain generally average, Kansas wheat farmers are facing significant challenges this year, including the widespread impact of wheat streak mosaic virus and related diseases, drought during the growing season and scattered rainfall during harvest.&nbsp;

Mike McClellan, who farms in Rooks County with his nephew Cade Beesley, started harvest about five days ago. Their crew includes hired hand Dave and Cade’s son, Coy. With about two-thirds left to cut, they’re making steady progress.

Yields have been above average compared to the past three years and are landing around average overall. Protein levels are ranging from 11.5 to 15.5 percent, and test weights on their better fields, those not hit by wheat streak mosaic virus, have been coming in at 58 to 60 pounds per bushel.

McClellan said their biggest challenges this year have been drought and wheat streak mosaic virus. The virus hit hard in the spring, with large pockets showing up across fields, more widespread than usual. The impact has been noticeable, with lower yields, reduced plant height, and lighter test weights in affected areas. Scattered rain showers during harvest have added to the test weight struggles.

Jackson Hoelker with Skyland Grain in Kingman County says harvest is nearly a month in, with cutting beginning the first week of June. Yields are coming in between 50 and 55 bushels per acre. Protein levels range from 10.5 to 11.5 percent, and test weights, which began around 60 to 63 pounds, have dropped slightly and are now closer to 58.

Hoelker estimates harvest is 85 to 90 percent complete. For the most part, everything that can be cut has been, but growers will need fields to finish drying out before they can finish the rest. While they haven’t seen much sprouting in the area, the biggest challenge this year has simply been how long the harvest is taking to complete.

Jason Ochs, who farms in Hamilton County, reported that harvest began on June 20, but some of the wheat has had several rain showers since it has been ripe. Other areas have received very little rain the past three years. Wheat in the area is short and hard to get it all in the header. The moisture came a little too late, but they did have perfect grainfill weather, cool and rainy. Yields are ranging based on conditions, but test weights have been decent, ranging from 59 to 61 pounds per bushel. He mentioned some wheat streak mosaic virus in the area. Ochs has seen some wind shatter from 40 mile per hour winds. While the wheat is short, the residue out there “makes a huge difference for the next crop,” he said. “It retains moisture and protects from sun and wind.”

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (7/2)

The entire training session for local members of Youth Leaders in Kansas (YLinK) was worth the trip but the breakout sessions were especially enlightening, said Tyler Morton, Juvenile Services prevention advocate.

Nine young people and two adults attended the recent Upstream Kansas training event at the Rhatigan Student Center at Wichita State University.

“When our YLinK members participated in the breakout sessions, it was awesome to watch them process what they were learning,” Morton said. “Their passion for the topics was obvious and the sessions gave me more insight into how our group could apply what they learned within our own coalition.”

Topics included how to speak during a meeting; fundraising opportunities; building partnerships; peer-to-peer support; and building a campaign.

Morton noted he appreciates the governmental teamwork by agencies that support young people in a variety of ways.

The Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services oversees YLinK, while the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) sponsors Upstream Kansas. CADCA is under the umbrella of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“It is amazing and gratifying that these entities collaborate to provide this level of training in Kansas,” Morton said. “Through the work of CADCA, youth have scholarship opportunities and access to information about mentoring.

“In addition, they can potentially be trainers themselves after high school graduation.”

Other agenda items at the Upstream Kansas training included: keynote speaker Taylor Johnson, who does stand-up comedy and speaks about mental health; a panel of four young people who spoke about their coalitions and special projects that they started in their schools and communities; and a presentation about the Kansas Youth Prevention Action Council.

Morton and Glenna Reinert were the two adults who attended the training.

Local Youth Leaders in Kansas members attend training

There's no better way to kick off of the holiday weekend than with the annual
fireworks display hosted by the City of Great Bend on Thursday (July 3) night. Great
Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis said the times and
guidelines remain the same this year for the display at the Great Bend Expo
Complex, west of town.


"The crowd was really big last year," said Gaddis. "We have another local fireworks company that is going to come in this year with some big fireworks. We're really excited."

Gates at the Expo Complex will open at 7:30 p.m. A live remote with Eagle Media
will start at 8:30 p.m. airing on 100.7 Eagle Country. The fireworks begin
around 9:45 p.m. or when it gets dark.


"I always love it when I go out there and see all of the families that come out there," said Gaddis. "The kids will be out there with their baseball or volleyball stuff. They're all out there in the open field playing."

In April, the Great Bend City Council approved a vendor contract with Wald
&amp; Co. Inc. and All American Display Fireworks to conduct the show for
$15,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

fireworks display hosted by the City of Great Bend on Thursday (July 3) night. Great
Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis said the times and
guidelines remain the same this year for the display at the Great Bend Expo
Complex, west of town.
"The crowd was really big last year," said Gaddis. "We have another local fireworks company that is going to come in this year with some big fireworks. We're really excited."Gates at the Expo Complex will open at 7:30 p.m. A live remote with Eagle Media
will start at 8:30 p.m. airing on 100.7 Eagle Country. The fireworks begin
around 9:45 p.m. or when it gets dark.
"I always love it when I go out there and see all of the families that come out there," said Gaddis. "The kids will be out there with their baseball or volleyball stuff. They're all out there in the open field playing."In April, the Great Bend City Council approved a vendor contract with Wald
&amp; Co. Inc. and All American Display Fireworks to conduct the show for
$15,000.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Giving Tuesday is fast approaching and will be on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2025. Planning for this year’s 12th Giving Tuesday has started at the Golden Belt Community Foundation. Again, this year the foundation is inviting all qualified charitable organizations in Barton, Edwards, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties to participate in the giving campaign and celebration.

The first step in signing up for the first time or the 12th time is the registration form. The registration form will be shared to the GBCF Facebook page and website or stop by the office for a hard copy. Information will continue to be updated as time gets closer to December 2nd.

Any organization that would like to sign up for this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign for the first time, please email mackenzie@goldenbeltcf.org or call the office to start the process and/or ask any questions.

· Any qualified charitable organization in Barton, Pawnee, Rush or Stafford counties may participate

· Funds raised may be granted directly back to the charitable organization or added to the organization’s endowment fund – it is the organization’s choice

Western Cooperative Electric announced the launch of the W.O.R.K. Scholarship (Working Opportunities for Rural Kansas), a new initiative created to support individuals who have completed postsecondary education and returned to live and work within Western Cooperative Electrics service area.

This $1,000 scholarship is designed to assist recent graduates with student loan or school debt as they settle back into the rural communities they call home. The scholarship will be awarded directly to the recipient’s loan provider or educational institution.

This is the first year of the W.O.R.K. Scholarship, made possible by the Western’s Board of Trustees. The board created this trial scholarship to recognize and support the growing number of young professionals returning to western Kansas to live, work, and contribute to their communities.

WCE launches W.O.R.K. scholarship to support returning grads

Winners were announced for the 2025 Pitch Hit &amp; Run competition held in Great Bend on July 1. More than 80 children participated at the Great Bend Sports Complex, showing off their baseball and softball skills.

Scores will be submitted to the Pitch Hit &amp; Run website on Thursday and the Great Bend Recreation Commission and Great Bend Optimist Club will hear back from them sometime in August on if any of the local participants qualify for the Team Competition at Kaufman Stadium in Kansas City.

HODGEMAN COUNTY—One person was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Wednesday in Hodgeman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2009 Chevy Venture driven by&nbsp; Austin James Andrews, 23, Jetmore, was westbound on Kansas 156 approximately 3 miles east of U.S. 283. The minivan traveled off the road to the right. The drier overcorrected to the left then back to the right.&nbsp; It traveled off the road a second time, entered the north ditch, rotated counterclockwise and rolled.

EMS transported Andrews to the Hodgeman County Health Center. He was properly restrained, according to the KHP.

This is day 7 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest progress continues across Kansas, with some areas moving slowly due to wet conditions while others have managed to dodge the rain and are preparing to wrap up harvest. Farmers and custom harvesters are adapting to challenges to keep things moving.

Shane Eck with the Pawnee County Coop Association in Larned reports that harvest is 75% to 85% complete in their region. Harvest conditions have been mostly favorable as they have missed most of the heavy rain events but had some scattered rains.

Yields are ranging from 20 to 60 bushels per acre, which is, for the most part, an improvement over the drought-stricken crops of the past two years. They have already exceeded their take of wheat from last year and are above their five-year average. Test weights were averaging 58 pounds with some lower numbers in rainfall areas. Test weights and yields have been impacted by wheat streak mosaic virus and other associated viral diseases which have become more common in the region over the past three years. Proteins are averaging around 12%.

Paul Penner, a farmer in Marion County, has been harvesting on and off due to repeated rain delays. Wet conditions have made progress slow, and Penner estimates he has about three to four days left to go. He’s working to balance wrapping up harvest while also getting soybeans in the ground without damaging fields.

Test weights started around 60 pounds but have since dipped, now ranging closer to 56 to 59 pounds following the recent rains. The wet fields have been one of the biggest challenges this season. Penner planted KS Providence, AG Radical and AP Prolific, all of which are performing well so far.

Custom harvester Jacob Hermesch is cutting wheat near Kinsley, Kansas, where recent rains have made fields difficult to access without specialized equipment. Hermesch said tracks have made the difference this season, allowing his crew to keep working while others are sidelined by the mud.

“I got my combine stuck four times in one day,” Hermesch said. “But the tracked machine just walks right through it, no problem.”

Despite good wheat in the area, the wet conditions are slowing progress and putting extra stress on equipment. Hermesch estimates yields are ranging from 30 to 70 bushels per acre, depending on how well the crop was managed. He noted that demand for help is high in the Kinsley area, especially from farmers short on equipment. Even with the challenges he has faced, Hermesch is open to picking up more acres, especially closer to home along Highway 36.

Last week, the Barton County Commission approved a fuel agreement for
the landfill. This week, the Commission agreed to a contract with American
Plains Co-op to provide diesel fuel for the County Works Department, or Road
and Bridge.


County Works Director Chris Schartz said American Plains Co-op was the only bid
received, and the bid will provide the fuel price through June 30, 2026, or when the
50,000 gallon mark is exceeded.


"It's very specific for what we need," said Schartz. "We fill our trucks and equipment up every evening. We have to have people that have numerous amount of pumps in town. We also need somebody that deliver fuel to our sand dredge in Ellinwood. They have to have the truck and hose to be able to reach our sand dredge."

The bid prices #2 clear road fuel at $2.69 per gallon and off-road diesel at
$2.48 per gallon.


"The good thing about the Co-op is they have stations all over the county," said Schartz. "We can have access to fuel all throughout the county if we need it. The guys don't have to run back to Great Bend to fill the bulk fuel tanks. They can just run to the closest station and get fuel."

Since fuel is a commodity, Schartz said the price per gallon could go up or
down a few cents, depending on the how the markets are doing.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton Co. approves fuel bid from American Plains Co-op for road department

Over 80 baseball and softball players participated Tuesday (7/1) in the Pitch Hit &amp; Run competition at the Great Bend Sports Complex. Participants showed off their baseball and softball skills in hopes of earning a trip to Kauffman Stadium for the Regional MLB Pitch Hit &amp; Run competition. 

Results of the local competition are being compiled and will be released soon. 

The event is sponsored by the Great Bend Optimist Club and the Great Bend Recreation Commission.
