The 24th ranked Barton Community College men's golf team closed out its fall schedule this week with a 13th-place showing at the NJCAA Preview, held Thursday and Friday at Newton's Sand Creek Station Golf Course.

Posting an opening-round 304, the Cougars sat just five strokes outside the top five before a final-round 313 on Friday dropped them one spot in the standings while widening the margin within the 17-team, nationally ranked field.

Barton finished at +41 (617) on what marked its longest yardage test of the season, coming within eleven shots of the top-10 cutoff and edging No. 16 Dodge City by two strokes.

McLennan CC, ranked fourth nationally, captured the team title at 11-under (565) behind rounds of 281–284, six strokes clear of No. 9 Weatherford and No. 8 Hutchinson CC at 5-under (571).

Sophomore&nbsp;Wintakorn Suwanmuang&nbsp;led Barton's lineup with matching rounds of 75–75 to tie for 31st in the 90-player field at +6 (150).

Kobey Jackson&nbsp;followed close behind, improving by a stroke in the second round for a 77–76 card and tie for 44th (+9 153), while&nbsp;Phattarapol Ongla&nbsp;finished just one shot back in 48th (+10, 154) after rounds of 76–78.

Matteu Cauvin-Piacentini&nbsp;placed 67th (+15, 161) with scores of 76–85, and&nbsp;Ted Gemzell&nbsp;completed the five-man contingent in 84th (+27, 171) following rounds of 87–84.

No. 24 Barton Men's Golf closes fall slate 13th at NJCAA Preview

Ori Briger&nbsp;of the 6th-ranked Barton Community College volleyball team picked up her second consecutive Division I Volleyball Setter of the Week honor announced by the KJCCC.

Briger ran the first wave of Barton's 6-2 offense to guide the sixth-ranked Cougars to a pair of conference wins last week, helping Barton sweep Pratt before dispatching 13th-ranked Colby in five sets to remain in control of their KJCCC title hopes. Across eight sets, Briger averaged 5.63 assists per set while totaling 45 assists, 13 digs, and a service ace.

Briger opened the week with 21 assists and two digs in the sweep over Pratt, then followed with her 10th double-double of the year by putting up 24 assists and 11 digs in Saturday's five-set victory over Colby, continuing to provide steady court direction and defensive support in Barton's offensive system.

Having previously won the Week 2 award, Briger's now third honor of the season marks the team's eleventh overall conference or national weekly honor this season, joined by libero&nbsp;Mina Kaneko's five-time distinction (Weeks 1, 2, 4, 6 and 8),&nbsp;Stasa Stamenkovic's two selections (Weeks 4 and 7), and middle blockers&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;and&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt&nbsp;(Week 3).

Most recently, the sophomore led the Cougars to another pair of wins at Seward County and Garden City, adding another 28 assists with 11 digs helping Barton clinch at least a share of its third straight KJCCC title.

Now 14-1 in league play and 27-5 overall, Briger and the Cougars can clinch the title outright Saturday with a win hosting Cloud County Community College. Match time slated for 6:00 p.m. with sophomore recognition taking place ahead of first serve.

The No. 2 Panther football team has seen its share of
running-clock wins in 2025. Friday night, with the opening of the Class 5A
playoffs, the clock barrier moved from 35 to 45 points. A heavy ground attack
in the first half, and a 29-yard interception return from junior Cooper
Ohnmacht, gave Great Bend a 49-0 lead just 66 seconds into the third quarter of
Friday’s 49-19 victory over winless Newton.

Senior Daxton Minton is already the school’s leader in
career passing touchdowns. But Friday night he used his feet, rushing for 131
yards and a pair of scores on his only two carries. He took the second play of
the game 63 yards to give the Panthers a 7-0 lead just 40 seconds in.

Sophomore Cal Schartz recovered a fumble early in Newton’s
first drive. Two plays later, senior Ian Premer found space on a 39-yard
touchdown run. Still in the first quarter, Premer’s 70-yard punt return was
called back on a penalty. Minton found the Newton sideline on a 68-yard run on
the very next play.

Junior Cooper Ohnmacht ended the next Railer drive with a
one-handed interception new midfield. A few plays later, Premer took the direct
snap and ran 12 yards for the score. Freshman Giovanni Cruz booted through his
fourth PAT of the night to boost the Panther lead to 28-0 with nearly three
minutes still remaining in the first quarter.

The Panther offense kept moving. Facing 3rd-and-11,
Minton threw a short pass to Premer, who broke several tackles to find the end
zone from 17-yards out.

“We just wanted to do all the little things right, get
better in every aspect of the game,” Minton said. “I felt like we came out and
did that.”

Newton answered with the best drive of the night. The Railers
got all the way to the Great Bend 3-yard line before a pair of personal fouls
on the field and sideline moved the ball back 30 yards. The Panther defense stood
its ground to force a turnover on downs.

Senior Conner Holladay took the next offensive play 54
yards. That set up a 7-yard touchdown run from Premer in the final minute of
the half.

Ohnmacht set the clock into motion for good with his 29-yard
pick-six on the first Newton possession of the second half. The Railers later
picked up points on a pair of short runs.

enter Friday at 6-3 with a recent win against Derby and a 14-0 playoff win
against Valley Center.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes has made enough trips to Buffalo to know he and the Kansas City Chiefs shouldn’t expect a warm welcome from Bills fans on Sunday.

“They don’t like us,” Mahomes said.

Since 2020, Mahomes and the Chiefs have blocked Josh Allen and the Bills' path to the Super Bowl with four playoff wins,&nbsp;including Buffalo's 32-29 loss in the AFC championship game&nbsp;in January.

The most memorable was Kansas City’s 42-36 overtime win in a divisional-round meeting in January 2022, since dubbed “13 Seconds.” That’s how much time Mahomes had to complete two passes for 44 yards and set up Harrison Butker's tying, 49-yard field goal on the final play of regulation.

The stakes of Sunday’s meeting aren't as high, yet the Chiefs (5-3) and Bills (5-2) have playoff seeding to think about.

If there’s any solace in Buffalo, it’s that the Bills have won four straight in the regular season against their fellow AFC contender.

Buffalo fans may not like the Chiefs, but the team certainly has the Bills' respect.

Allen recounted the number of times he and Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo have exchanged greetings following games, no matter the outcome.

“Sometimes it just kind of happens, we’re walking by and sometimes we look for each other,” Allen said. “Yes, I would say there is mutual respect, at least I hope there is.”

Allen is 4-1 the regular season against KC, averaging 252 yards passing with 13 overall touchdowns (10 passing) and three interceptions.

On Sunday, the quarterback will be challenged by Spagnuolo's defense, which ranks fourth in the NFL and third against the pass. Kansas City has allowed a combined 652 yards and 24 points during a three-game win streak.

Meanwhile, Allen and the Bills' passing attack&nbsp;have struggled&nbsp;over a four-game stretch in which he’s thrown four interceptions, lost a fumble and had difficulty finding open receivers downfield.

“It’s just some of the smaller things and again, it pertains to what I’m doing,” Allen said.

Buffalo has&nbsp;a dynamic ground attack featuring James Cook, who rushed for a career-best 216 yards and scored twice in a 40-9 win over Carolina last weekend.

Mahomes, meantime, has been on a roll, taking advantage of an offense that has a nearly full complement of threats.

Receiver Xavier Worthy is back after hurting his shoulder in Week 1. Fellow wideout Rashee Rice has been a dynamic option since his return from&nbsp;a six-game NFL suspension&nbsp;for his role in a high-speed car crash in Dallas in March 2024.

Whatever welcome Mahomes receives, the quarterback intends to enjoy what should be a raucous atmosphere.

“When you watch on TV growing up, that’s the environment you want to play in,” he said, before noting it could be his final game at the 52-year-old stadium, with the Bills moving to a new facility across the street next year.

“I love playing in historic stadiums, and that stadium has had so many great players play in it,” Mahomes said. Him among them.

Bills coach Sean McDermott fondly recalls his 12 seasons with the Eagles, when he worked under now-Chiefs coach Andy Reid. And yes, those memories include Reid firing McDermott as Philadelphia's defensive coordinator following the 2010 season.

McDermott said Reid’s encouraging words in dismissing him helped him turn a low point into eventually landing the Bills job in 2017.

“He is very thorough,” Reid said, before joking about McDermott going bald. “I had him when he was a pup. I joke, I had him when he had hair.”

The Chiefs could be without leading rusher Isiah Pacheco, who hurt his knee against Washington on Monday night, and leaving one of their thinnest position groups even thinner. Kareem Hunt is in line to get more snaps alongside rookie Brashard Smith. And Elijah Mitchell could be active for the first time this season after signing as a free agent.

“We’ve got some other guys that can make plays,” Hunt said. “Definitely ready for whatever I’m asked to do.”

Kansas City is still without left tackle Josh Simmons, its first-round draft pick, who has been away from the team while dealing with a family situation. Jaylon Moore will start again in his place. But the Chiefs could have standout right guard Trey Smith back after he missed one game with a back ailment.

Bills receiver Gabe Davis practiced for the first time this week since he tore the meniscus in his left knee last November with Jacksonville. He spent his first four seasons in Buffalo and is currently on the Bills' practice squad.

Davis is best remembered for setting an NFL playoff record with four touchdown receptions in the overtime loss to the Chiefs.

Though it’s unclear if the Bills will activate Davis this weekend, the receiver has quickly re-established his chemistry with Allen.

“I don’t think there’s anything we need to talk about or really learn about each other,” Davis said. “We’ve done it a lot, and it just feels like second nature at this point.”

Staging the 2029 final is a contest between Wembley Stadium in London and Barcelona’s renovated Camp Nou. UEFA has confirmed the list of interested bidders from among its member associations, suggesting a long-speculated final in New York will not happen until at least 2030. Munich hosted the final last season and Wembley staged the previous final in 2024. Barcelona has not been the final venue since 1999. MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. LSU athletic director Scott Woodward has resigned under pressure from the post he's held for six years. His departure on Thursday night came four days after the firing of football coach Brian Kelly and a day after Republican Gov. Jeff Landry said Woodward would not hire Kelly’s replacement. Woodward is a Baton Rouge native and LSU graduate. He was hired as athletic director at his alma mater in April 2019. Since then, LSU has won two national championships in baseball and one each in football, women’s basketball and gymnastics.

TORONTO (AP) — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts will consider using Shohei Ohtani as an opener or outfielder in Game 7 if the World Series against Toronto goes the distance. If he enters as a reliever after starting as a designated hitter, the Dodgers would lose their DH, and he would have to play a position to stay in the game. The current CBA was set to expire on Friday and tensions have been rising in recent weeks as the sides try to work toward a new deal.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas quarterback Arch Manning is making good progress in practice, coach Steve Sarkisian says. However, his status to return from a concussion in time to play against No. 9 Vanderbilt remains uncertain. Manning has been in concussion protocol since being injured in No. 20 Texas' win over Mississippi State last week. He returned to practice Wednesday but was listed as questionable. If Manning can't play, backup Matthew Caldwell will start. Manning has passed for 1,795 yards and 15 touchdowns this season.

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma City Thunder guard Nikola Topic has been diagnosed with testicular cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. Sam Presti, the team's general manager, announced this on Thursday. Presti said doctors are “extremely positive” about his long-term outlook. Topic has been working out throughout the process and didn’t want the diagnosis revealed until after he started treatment. Three Barton County high school volleyball teams advanced to their respective state tournaments. Two advanced to the championship round on Saturday. Great Bend finished at 1-2 in Salina to end its season. Hoisington overcame a rough start to advance to the 3A semifinals in Hutchinson. Ellinwood begins Class 2A play in Dodge City on Friday.

As the No. 6 seed at the Class 5A tournament in Salina, Great Bend had its work cut out. The path grew even more difficult after a round-one 25-11, 25-10 loss to No. 3 Blue Valley Southwest. That loss snapped an 18-match win streak for the Panthers.

Great Bend answered with a 13-25, 26-24, 25-20 upset against No. 2 Maize South to stay alive. Needing a win to secure a spot in Saturday's semifinal, the Panthers took set one against No. 7 Kapaun 29-27, but dropped the final two sets 25-18, 25-21.

Blue Valley Southwest finished the pool at 3-0, while Great Bend, Kapaun, and Maize South each finished at 1-2. With the top two teams advancing to Saturday, the tie-break came down to sets lost. Maize South won that battle with four compared to five each for Great Bend and Kapaun.

As the No. 3 seed in Hutchinson, Hoisington suffered an early blow with a 20-25, 25-17, 25-20 loss to No. 6 Holton. That meant the Cardinals would likely need a win against No. 2 Riverton in the final match to advance.

Hoisington had no trouble getting by No. 7 Osage City 25-19, 25-16 in the third match of the day. Riverton also fell to Holton and defeated Osage City, making the final match of the day an elimination match. Hoisington stayed alive in a 26-24, 25-23 thriller.

In the other pool, Ellsworth opened with a 3-set loss to Wichita Trinity before falling to Silver Lake and Hesston in straight sets to end its season.

The sixth-ranked Barton Community College volleyball team took care of business Wednesday evening inside the Barton Gym, sweeping Garden City Community College 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 31-29).

Barton controlled the opening two sets with steady offensive rhythm before Garden City refused to go quietly in the third, trading blows through 18 ties in a back-and-forth finish. After fending off four set points, the Cougars finally broke through on their third match point to complete the sweep.

The win marked Barton's tenth straight and secured at least a share of its third consecutive KJCCC championship with one regular-season contest remaining.

Barton improves to 14-1 in league play and 27-5 overall, while the Broncbusters fall to 8-7 in conference and 11-13 on the year.

The Cougars close out the regular season Saturday with a 6:00 p.m. first serve against Cloud County Community College, ahead of next Wednesday's KJCCC postseason opener.

Caroliny Cristiny&nbsp;and&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt&nbsp;led a balanced Cougar attack with eight kills apiece, Cristiny adding three aces and 11 digs while Pruitt posted a team-best .467 hitting efficiency and team leading four blocks.

Stasa Stamenkovic&nbsp;and&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;followed with seven kills each, Stamenkovic contributing 13 digs and two aces while Olander stuffed the stat sheet with three blocks and an ace.

Paola Batista&nbsp;chipped in six kills on .211 efficiency and four digs, while fellow freshman&nbsp;Brylynn Wicker&nbsp;supplied three kills and a pair of block assists.

Defensively,&nbsp;Mina Kaneko&nbsp;anchored the back row with a team-high 15 digs and two aces, continuing her climb among Barton's all-time dig leaders.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be without running back Isiah Pacheco for their high-profile showdown against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday after their leading rusher sprained a knee ligament in last week's win over the Washington Commanders.

Pacheco did not practice Wednesday as the Chiefs turned their attention to the rematch of last year's AFC championship game, which means Kareem Hunt is in line for more carries with Brashard Smith and Elijah Mitchell backing him up.

Pacheco, who has 329 yards rushing through the first eight weeks, carried 12 times for 58 yards before hurting his knee late in Monday night's win. Pacheco also missed a chunk of last season when he fractured his fibula in a game against Cincinnati.

“We'll just see. He's moving around. But tough kid,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Wednesday. “There was a point where he wanted to go back in (Monday) and I wouldn't let him. That's how he's wired. You have to cut his legs off to stop him.”

Hunt has primarily been the short-yardage back for Kansas City this season. The club's 2017 third-round pick returned to the Chiefs last year, after Pacheco got hurt in Week 2, and filled in admirably for them despite having missed the previous offseason and training camp while recovering from his own injury.

He signed a $1.5 million contract in March to stay with Kansas City, though incentives could push the value much higher.

“He's probably in better shape, just in overall better shape, not that he was in terrible shape before,” Reid said. “But he's had a year to do it, and kind of get back in the swing after having a little bit of a layoff there.”

The biggest question is whether Hunt can sustain his effectiveness with additional carries. He has yet to run the ball more than 13 times in a game this season, and he only had four carries in a win over the Raiders two weeks ago.

“I feel the best I've felt the last three or four years,” Hunt said. “Body is feeling good.”

Smith, a seventh-round pick in the April draft, had started to earn more playing time even before Pacheco got hurt. The former college wide receiver ran 14 times against the Raiders, mostly in the fourth quarter as Kansas City was trying to finish off a 31-0 rout, and he was effective even though the Las Vegas defense knew he would be getting the ball.

Mitchell is the wild card in the equation. He ran for nearly 1,000 yards during the 2021 season in San Francisco, but his playing time dwindled the following two seasons, and he missed all of last year while recovering from a hamstring injury.

“A lot of guys wouldn't even come back from that thing,” Reid said. “He battled back, and you could see him getting better every week through camp, and progressing through now. He takes a lot of reps with the scout-team group."

Whomever gets the carries against Buffalo could benefit from the return of standout right guard Trey Smith, who missed last week's win over the Commanders with back spasms. Smith returned to the practice field Wednesday.

“He did the walk-through this morning,” Reid said. “We'll just see how he does.”

NOTES: The Chiefs appear to be reuniting with DT Mike Pennel, who was released by Cincinnati earlier this week. The veteran's jersey was in their locker room Wednesday, though the team had not announced the signing. The Chiefs were in the market for some help after rookie Omarr Norman-Lott sustained a season-ending knee injury. ... Saudi Arabia already hosts the Esports World Cup which has shooter games like Call of Duty and Street Fighter that always shaped to be an issue for the IOC to endorse.

Most fans, 60%, support expanding the season, including many who say the move for players — which would include a salary increase — is worth the increased risk of injury. The NFL is nearing the midpoint of a season marked by high-profile injuries that have knocked several key players out of action the rest of the way. The poll suggests that for the most part, blame isn’t landing on the league.

AJ Storr transferred to Ole Miss after a disappointing season, Rylan Griffen headed to Texas A&amp;M and Rakease Passmore and David Coit Jr. transferred to Maryland.

Tre White arrived from Illinois, Jayden Dawson came from Loyola and Melvin Council Jr. joined from St. Bonaventure. Peterson is part of a six-man freshman class that includes elite prospects Kohl Rosario, Samis Calderon and French center Paul Mbiya.
