Barton's Kaneko closes out regular season with sixth KJCCC Defensive Player of the Week award

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Marshawn Kneeland, a Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman in his second NFL season and a former Western Michigan standout, has died. He was 24. The Cowboys say Kneeland died overnight. There were no other details on his death, and agent Jonathan Perzley asked for privacy. Kneeland was a second-round draft pick in 2024. His rookie season was off to a promising start before he was sidelined for five games by a knee injury. Kneeland had his first career sack in the season opener this season against Philadelphia. He played in seven of the nine games this year.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — A home owned by Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra has been heavily damaged by a massive fire. Miami-Dade County fire officials say the blaze was reported early Thursday morning. Spoelstra was not at home when the fire broke out. He and the Heat played in Denver on Wednesday night and their flight back to Miami landed at 5:11 a.m. Spoelstra arrived at the home shortly after with fire crews working to contain the blaze. Smoke was still visible around 8 a.m. but most of the fire appeared to be contained. Fire officials have scheduled a news briefing for later Thursday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The NHL now has a 900-goal club. Charter member: Alex Ovechkin, of course. The Washington star pushed his record total to a new level Wednesday night, scoring against the St. Louis Blues to reach 900. The milestone came 2:39 into the second period. Ovechkin was lurking in the offensive zone and was at the bottom of the right circle when he backhanded Jakob Chychrun’s rebound past a sliding Jordan Binnington, who wasn’t able to recover in time. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The NFL's first game in Spain will feature a Latin music showcase with Bizarrap and Daddy Yankee performing at halftime. The league on Thursday announced the halftime performance for when the Washington Commanders face the Miami Dolphins on Nov. 16 at Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. This marks Daddy Yankee’s return to the stage after retirement and his first live performance with Bizarrap. They will debut a new collaboration during the show. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have proven this season that they can beat just about anybody when they're playing their best.

They can lose quite easily when they are not.

It's a marked difference from past years, when Kansas City could overcome penalties, dropped passes and other miscues to win anyway. The Chiefs went 15-2 last season largely because they were able to stay in games they had no business winning, but the good fortune has not carried over; they find themselves 5-4 after&nbsp;a 28-21 loss in Buffalo on Sunday.

“We've had great moments and we've had bad moments,”&nbsp;Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "We've got to be more consistent as a team. I've got to be more consistent at quarterback. We've got to be able to battle.

“We've been in a lot of these types of close games in our history, and they are not going our way now. So how can we deal with that adversity? How can we be better and learn from it? You can only learn from so many losses."

The game against the Bills marked a fitting bookend to the first half of the season for Kansas City, because it bared a close resemblance to its season opener in Brazil. In that one, the Chiefs played similarly poorly, had to deal with injuries that popped up during the game and still had a chance at the end, only for their defense to come up short when it needed a stop.

Indeed, health is becoming a problem for the Chiefs again, especially along the offensive line.

They hope to get first-round draft pick Josh Simmons back at some point, but the talented left tackle has been away from the team to deal with a family situation for several weeks. Then, against Buffalo, right tackle Jawaan Taylor hurt his ankle, and for a moment, left guard Kingsley Suamataia also left the game, leaving Kansas City with a patchwork offensive line.

Throw in a sprained knee ligament that sidelined running back Isiah Pacheco, and it was hardly a surprise that the Chiefs only managed to match their second-lowest point total this season; they scored 17 in a loss against Philadelphia.

“We've got to do a little better than that, obviously, when we're playing a good football team,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “It starts with me, doing my job better, putting guys in good position there to make some plays.”

Now the Chiefs are in a strange position: If the playoffs happened this week, they would be on the outside looking in.

Instead of fighting for the No. 1 seed down the stretch, they are forced to fight for any seed they can get.

“It's going to be an uphill battle when we get back,” Mahomes said, “but I think our guys are up to it.”

The Chiefs are getting what they hoped from their wide receiver triumvirate of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy and Marquise Brown.

Worthy missed time after hurting his shoulder in the opener against the Chargers, and Rice missed six games while serving an&nbsp;NFL suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy. But since the three of them have been available, they have managed to kick-start an offense that until this past Sunday had begun to resemble the Reid-and-Mahomes offenses of yesteryear.

The Kansas City defensive line has been pushed around far too often this season, and it may have had its worst game yet against the Bills, when James Cook ran for 114 yards and Josh Allen kept sneaking into the end zone for touchdowns.

Defensive back Trent McDuffie is going to cost the Chiefs a fortune when the two sides agree to a contract extension. He's been the best player on defense all season, and he capped the first half of the year with 12 tackles and a sack against Buffalo.

Defensive tackle Chris Jones has just two sacks through nine games, putting one of the NFL's highest-paid players on pace for his least-productive season in that department since his rookie year, when he was a part-time starter in 2016.

The Chiefs hope to get Pacheco and Taylor back after the bye.

Chiefs' struggles continue, with injuries and inconsistency contributing to 5-4 first half of season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Catcher Salvador Perez will remain with the Kansas City Royals rather than become a free agent, agreeing Tuesday to a two-year contact.

A nine-time All-Star, the 36-year-old had an&nbsp;$82 million, four-year contract&nbsp;that included a $13.5 million club option for 2026 with a $2 million buyout.

“Salvy is a Royals legend and one of the most important players this franchise has ever had,” general manager J.J. Picollo said in a statement. “We had the option for next year, but everyone knew we wanted to make sure his legacy with us continued longer than that. We appreciate Salvy’s commitment to the Royals, and we’re just as excited as our fans.”

Perez, Kansas City's captain, was MVP of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals won their second title and first since 1985.

Perez hit .236 with 30 homers and 100 RBIs, his third season with 100 or more. A five-time Gold Glove winner, he has a .264 average with 303 homers and 1,016 RBIs in 14 seasons, all with the Royals.

Saudi Arabia's wealth fund now has a deal with an American golf league. The LPGA Tour has announced it will co-sanction a PIF Global Series event with the Ladies European Tour. The Aramco Championship will be played the first week in April at prestigious Shadow Creek Golf Club in Las Vegas. The purse will be $4 million. Aramco has been a big supporter of the Ladies European Tour for the last five years, and several LPGA players have been competing in those events. Nelly Korda is a two-time winner. San Diego pitcher Robert Suarez also turned down his option and went free on the third day of the five-day free agent window. Barton struck for the lone goal in the 25th minute, as&nbsp;Kayla Methman's free kick from near midfield placed into the box glanced off a Garden City defender and deflected back into the net for an own goal that stood as the difference.

Coffeyville put the pressure on the Cougars early, striking first in the seventh minute as Diego Mejia netted his first goal of the season, cleaning up Eilo Junior's initial denied shot attempt.

No. 4 Cougars rally past Coffeyville 2-1, advance to Plains District Semifinals

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas freshman Darryn Peterson made his presence felt in an abbreviated stint against Green Bay in the teams' season opener.

Peterson, a potential No. 1 pick in next summer's NBA draft, scored 21 points in 22 minutes in his debut for the&nbsp;No. 19 Jayhawks in a 94-51 win over Green Bay&nbsp;on Monday night.

“That was literally the easiest 21 points in 21 minutes of action,” Green Bay coach Doug Gottlieb said. “I thought our guys guarded well. ... I don’t think he broke a sweat.”

Peterson scored 26 points in 25 minutes in Kansas’ exhibition opener against Louisville. But, he missed the next exhibition game against Fort Hays State because of cramps.

Kansas coach Bill Self said Peterson could have played more than 22 minutes if it was necessary Monday night.

But, the combination of returning cramps and a 21-point halftime lead made keeping Peterson out an easy decision for Self, especially with a game against No. 25 North Carolina looming on Friday night in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

“It was bothering him,” Self said. “He said he felt it coming on. So (there was) no reason to (push it). Hopefully we can get him out there for practice tomorrow. If it had been a closer game, I’m sure he would try to go back out there.”

Peterson was especially impressive in the first half, when he scored 18 of his points. He was 6 of 10 from the field, including hitting two of Kansas’ three 3-pointers. He also had three rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block.

“We loved him on film more so than a lot of the other freshmen around the country,” Gottlieb said.

After seeing him in game action, Self said he’s impressed with more than just the effortless scoring ability his prized freshman possesses.

“He makes the game look easy,” Self said. “It’s not that easy. In the first half, he was playing downhill, and he played really well. He’s a good player. His poise is well beyond his years, without question.

“Teams will do a good job guarding him. He’ll have off nights, and that stuff’s going to happen. He’s young, but he’s about as mature as any 18-year old around anywhere.”

Self, who is a stickler for defense, even likes Peterson’s defensive effort.

“I think he could be great defensively. He could be. It’s like the hashtag-potential, which means it has not happened yet. But I think he could be great defensively.

“I think he loves playing. And the last I checked, that’s 50 percent of being out there.”

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jacoby Brissett threw for two touchdowns and ran for a score filling in again for Kyler Murray, and the Arizona Cardinals stopped a five-game losing streak with a 27-17 victory over the Dallas Cowboys. Brissett made his third consecutive start after the week began with expectations of Murray returning from a foot injury coming off the team’s open week. Instead, the Cardinals pivoted to Brissett. Arizona won for just the second time in the past 18 games when Murray didn’t take at least five snaps or sat out entirely. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — All three catches Marvin Harrison Jr. had in the first quarter converted long third downs for the Arizona Cardinals. That certainly helped set an early tone in a 27-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Monday night. Harrison went on to a career-high seven catches for 96 yards, including a 4-yarder from backup quarterback Jacob Brissett for the game's touchdown, and the Cardinals finished 7-of-9 on third-down conversions in the first half as they ended their five-game losing streak. After the three early conversions, Harrison had a 4-yard TD catch early in the second quarter that put Arizona ahead 10-0.

Ohtani joined Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber and outfielder Juan Soto as finalists for the NL honor. DUESSELDORF, Germany (AP) — The LA Rams and Kansas City Chiefs’ game in Berlin in the shadow of the Cold War remains one of the strangest and most significant preseason games in league history. Players mingled with Soviet soldiers on the streets in 1990, less than a year after the Berlin Wall had fallen. It was the NFL’s first game of any sort in continental Europe and a notable success for future commissioner Roger Goodell. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Arizona freshman Koa Peat had a chip on his shoulder before making his college debut on Monday. Feeling a bit neglected in Switzerland while playing for the USA 19-and-under team, the three-time Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year said he was going to remind people he was one of the best incoming freshmen, despite not playing in the McDonald’s All-American Game or at the Nike Hoop Summit. He did that by scoring 30 points to lead No. 13 Arizona to a 93-87 win over defending national champion and No. 3 Florida in the Hall of Fame Series.

Jayden Daniels has a dislocated left elbow, and Washington coach Dan Quinn did not have a timetable for his return when he provided an update Monday. Quinn began his video conference by admitting it was a mistake to leave Daniels in the game in the fourth quarter Sunday night. The Commanders were down 38-7 to Seattle in a game they’d eventually lose 38-14, and Daniels had already missed time this season with knee and hamstring problems. The second-year quarterback was hurt with 7:29 remaining, when he was tackled and his non-throwing arm bent gruesomely after he put his hand on the ground.

ATLANTA (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have hired Walt Weiss as their manager to succeed Brian Snitker. Weiss has been the Braves’ bench coach since 2018 and was on Snitker’s staff when they won the World Series in 2021. This is Weiss’ second major league managing job after four seasons with the Colorado Rockies from 2013-16. Weiss finished his playing career as a shortstop with Atlanta from 1998-2000. Snitker announced in early October he would not be returning for an 11th year with the club.

Victor Conte has died at 75 years old. He was the architect of a scheme to provide undetectable performance-enhancing drugs to professional athletes. They included baseball stars Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi and Olympic track champion Marion Jones. A sports nutrition company Conte founded said in a social media post that he died Monday. It didn't disclose his cause of death. The federal government’s investigation into another company Conte founded led to the convictions of Jones, elite sprint cyclist Tammy Thomas and former NFL defensive lineman Dana Stubblefield. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes wasn’t in the mood to look too far ahead after one of the worst performances of his career in Kansas City’s latest showdown — and regular-season loss — against Buffalo.

And that was especially true when the discussion turned to the potential of yet another rematch with the Bills in the playoffs.

“We’ve got to get there first,” Mahomes said&nbsp;following a 28-21 loss Sunday&nbsp;when he had one of the worst passing games of his career.

The Chiefs (5-4) have lost five straight regular-season meetings against Buffalo. But they're 4-0 when facing the Bills in the playoffs since the 2020 postseason, including a win in last season's AFC championship game.

Just when it appeared the Chiefs had found their groove while winning three straight and five of six, they took a step back against the Bills.

“We’ve had great moments and we’ve had bad moments,” Mahomes said. “We’ve got to be more consistent as a team. I’ve got to be more consistent at quarterback. And we’ve got to be able to battle.”

Mahomes closed a disappointing performance with three straight incompletions from Buffalo’s 40 and the two-time NFL MVP finished 15 of 34 for 250 yards with an interception. It was the first time in a nine-year career he completed fewer than 50% of his passes, and just the 10th time Mahomes failed to complete a TD pass in a regular-season game.

As for his interception, it ended Kansas City’s second-to-last possession with 4:18 left. Facing third-and-11 at the Chiefs 23, Mahomes was being pressured when he threw a pass up the right sideline that&nbsp;was intercepted by rookie Maxwell Hairston.

The Bills defense harassed Mahomes throughout with three sacks and 15 quarterback hits.

Mahomes was outdueled by Josh Allen, who set a team record by completing 88% of his passes (23 of 26) for 273 yards, and had three TDs — one passing and two rushing.

“You know it’s going to come down to a couple of plays, and they made those plays today,” Mahomes said. “Josh was amazing.”

The outing for Mahomes came on the heels of a three-game winning streak in which he completed 74% of his passes for an average of 281 yards with nine touchdowns and two interceptions. It was a three-game run in which the Chiefs beating the Lions, Raiders and Commanders by a combined score of 89-24.

“They have good pass rushers and they had a good plan of doing some games up front and pushing the pocket,” Mahomes said. “I’ve got to be better at working the pocket and finding different lanes to step up into.”

He had a few highlights, such as completing a 29-yard pass to convert fourth-and-17 on a drive that Kareem Hunt capped with a 1-yard touchdown run to cut Buffalo’s lead to 28-21.

There was also his 40-yard completion to Hollywood Brown at the Bills 1 in the final minute of the first half. The Chiefs, however, had to settle for Harrison Butker's 19-yard field goal after Hunt was stopped for no gain and Mahomes threw two completions.

The bad, however, outweighed the good, including the Chiefs turning the ball over on downs in the second quarter, when safety Cole Bishop broke up Mahomes’ short pass over the middle intended for Rashee Rice.

The Bills took over at their 40 and built a 21-10 lead on Allen’s first of two 1-yard touchdown runs.

Rice had 80 yards on four receptions and ran&nbsp;for a 3-yard touchdown on a direct snap&nbsp;in the first quarter. Hunt also scored on a 2-yard run, while Butker was good on two field-goal attempts.

“Against a team like this,” coach Andy Reid said, “you’ve got to be able to score touchdowns. Not field goals.”

Mahomes was overheard rallying his teammates in the visiting locker room after the game.

“We’ve got to do it now,” Mahomes said. “There’s no easy games coming up and there’s no more chances where we can take losses. We’ve got to learn from it fast.”

Kansas City gets a break by entering its bye week before facing current AFC West division-leader Denver (7-2).

“It’s going to be an uphill battle when we get back,” Mahomes said. “But I think our guys are up for it.”

The Big 12 has two teams in the top 10 of the Associated Press Top 25 college football poll for the first time in two years. Notre Dame is back in the top 10 after a two-month absence. Oklahoma and Texas have made significant upward moves. The top seven teams remain unchanged, with Ohio State at No. 1 for the 10th straight week. Losses by Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, and Miami have shuffled the Nos. 8, 9, and 10 spots. BYU, Texas Tech, and Notre Dame now hold them. LAS VEGAS (AP) — Cam Little of the Jacksonville Jaguars has broken an NFL record by kicking a 68-yard field goal. Little converted the kick at the end of the first half against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. Justin Tucker had the previous record, a 66-yarder in 2021 that gave the Baltimore Ravens a 19-17 win over the Detroit Lions. While Tucker’s kick hit the crossbar, Little’s boot had plenty of room as it sailed through the uprights. Little came into the game having missed three of his last four kicks, including an extra-point attempt. But the Jaguars’ coaches insisted they had faith in the second-year pro, who hit a 70-yarder in the preseason.

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Kyle Larson has denied Denny Hamlin his first career championship at Phoenix Raceway. A late caution sent the title-deciding finale into overtime. Hamlin was three laps from shedding the label as the greatest NASCAR driver to never win a championship when William Byron got a flat tire and hit the wall. Hamlin led the field down pit road and got four new tires on his Toyota. Larson only took two tires in his Chevrolet. It meant Larson was fifth for the two-lap sprint to the finish, with Hamlin back in 10th. Ryan Blaney, who was eliminated from title contention last week, won the race.

Auburn fired coach Hugh Freeze after the Tigers lost for the 12th time in their last 15 Southeastern Conference games. Freeze failed to fix Auburn’s offensive issues in three years on the Plains, scoring 24 or fewer points in 17 of his 22 league games. He also ended up on the wrong end of too many close matchups. His finale was a 10-3 home loss to unranked Kentucky in which Jackson Arnold and Ashton Daniels were sacked a combined seven times. It was Auburn’s third consecutive loss at Jordan-Hare Stadium and dropped the team to 1-5 in SEC play.

HOUSTON (AP) — Denver’s Marcedes Lewis made history Sunday against the Houston Texans when at age 41 he became the oldest tight end to ever play in an NFL game. When he entered the game on the fourth snap of Denver’s first drive he also became the oldest player to appear in a game in franchise history. Lewis is the second-oldest active player in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 in December. Lewis was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday and promoted to the active roster Saturday.

Europe’s top teams appear to have finally come to grips with the new-look Champions League. The standings look very different heading into the fourth round of games compared to one year ago, when the new 36-team format debuted and the results were less predictable. The top end of the table before Tuesday’s games is a list of unbeaten, high-earning teams led by Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. They meet Tuesday at Parc des Princes. A second blockbuster is fifth-place Real Madrid at 10th-place Liverpool. It opens the door slightly for teams outside the big five leagues to catch up. Sporting Lisbon is tied for 11th.

(AP) — Sam Darnold threw four touchdown passes before his first incompletion, and the Seattle Seahawks played a near-perfect first half offensively on their way to a 38-14 rout of the Washington Commanders. While Tucker’s kick hit the crossbar, Little’s boot had plenty of room as it sailed through the uprights. (AP) — Kyle Larson has denied Denny Hamlin his first career championship at Phoenix Raceway. A late caution sent the title-deciding finale into overtime. Hamlin led the field down pit road and got four new tires on his Toyota. Larson only took two tires in his Chevrolet. It meant Larson was fifth for the two-lap sprint to the finish, with Hamlin back in 10th. Ryan Blaney, who was eliminated from title contention last week, won the race.Auburn fired coach Hugh Freeze after the Tigers lost for the 12th time in their last 15 Southeastern Conference games. When he entered the game on the fourth snap of Denver’s first drive he also became the oldest player to appear in a game in franchise history. Lewis is the second-oldest active player in the NFL behind Aaron Rodgers, who will turn 42 in December. Lewis was signed to the practice squad on Wednesday and promoted to the active roster Saturday.Europe’s top teams appear to have finally come to grips with the new-look Champions League.
