LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Darryn Peterson scored 32 points, including three crucial free throws in regulation to the tie the game, and No. 22 Kansas erased a double-digit deficit to outlast TCU 104-100 in overtime on Tuesday night.

Kansas (11-4, 1-1 Big 12) trailed by 16 points midway through the second half, but cut the TCU lead to three with 34 seconds left in regulation.

The Jayhawks' next trip down the court was fruitless, leading to a foul and two free throws by TCU’s Liutauras Lelevicius. Kansas' Flory Bidunga cut the lead back to three on a tip in with just over six seconds remaining.

After a turnover on the ensuing TCU inbounds play, the Jayhawks got the ball to Peterson, who drew a foul beyond the arc and knocked down all three free throws to tie the game at the end of regulation.

Kansas held the lead throughout overtime and ultimately secured the game at the free-throw line, converting 9 of 11. TCU (11-4, 1-1) went 2 for 4 in the same frame. Kansas guard Melvin Council Jr. scored nine of his 18 points during overtime.

Lelevicius led the Horned Frogs with a career-high 23 points. He shot 7 for 9 and hit five 3-pointers, another career high. He entered the game averaging just 8.5 points per game and shooting 35.8% from 3-point range.

Lelevicius outscored sophomore David Punch, who recorded his 10th consecutive double-digit performance with 20 points. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Tre White and Bidunga also finished in double figures for the Jayhawks, recording 22 and 16, respectively.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — John Harbaugh has been fired after 18 seasons as the Baltimore Ravens’ coach. Owner Steve Bisciotti said Tuesday relieved Harbaugh of his duties after the Ravens were one of the league’s most disappointing teams this season. They went 8-9 and missed the playoffs after entering Week 1 as one of the Super Bowl favorites. A team official says coordinators Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr. are both gone from head coach Dan Quinn’s staff with the Washington Commanders after a 5-12 season. Kingsbury, the offensive coordinator, and Whitt, who had been in charge of the defense until being stripped of play-calling duties during the season, arrived in Washington with Quinn before the 2024 season. Quinn and Kingsbury mutually agreed to part ways, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the staff changes hadn't been announced. Whitt was dismissed. Bobby Johnson is out as Washington’s offensive line coach, too.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Lakers coach JJ Redick compares LeBron James at 41 years old to Hall of Fame pitcher Greg Maddux at the end of his career. Redick says James doesn't always have his best stuff, but usually has enough to win. James scored 30 points in a 111-103 victory in New Orleans on Tuesday night. It was James' second 30-point game in his last three. FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have fired first-year defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus after they allowed the most points and intercepted the fewest passes in franchise history. It’s the second consecutive season in which Eberflus has been fired. He was let go midseason in 2024, his third year as coach of the Chicago Bears. Eberflus made it to the end of the season in his return to Dallas, where he had been an assistant from 2011-17 before going to Indianapolis as defensive coordinator. But the 55-year-old’s fate appeared sealed before Sunday’s finale. Dallas' 34-17 loss at the New York Giants set a club record as the ninth game of allowing at least 30 points.

PENDLE, England (AP) — A modest, 140-meter-long ski slope lies in the heart of Ribble Valley in northwest England and stands out for its plastic matting and sheep roaming all around. Workers there call it a “unique environment” for skiing and it has produced a World Cup-winning slalom racer who will be a medal contender at the upcoming Winter Olympics. Dave Ryding grew up racing in the quaint surrounds of Pendle Ski Club and is regularly beating rivals from classic winter-sports countries like Sweden, Austria and Norway. He recalls some of his practice sessions and races as a kid being interrupted by sheep idling across the slope. Ryding says “people know my story and they can’t really believe that it was possible.” He's an inspiration to the club's current skiing hopefuls.

The move Tuesday was expected after the Lions missed the playoffs and coach Dan Campbell took over Morton’s play-calling duties midway through the season. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Royals manager Matt Quatraro has agreed to a three-year contract extension though 2029.

His deal includes a team option for 2030, the Royals said Sunday.

Quatraro replaced Mike Matheny after the 2022 season and has led the Royals to a 224-262 record in three years.

Kansas City improved from 56-106 during Quatraro’s first season to 86-76 in 2024, and the Royals then went 82-80 last year for their first consecutive winning seasons since 2013-15.

Quatraro finished second to Cleveland's Stephen Vogt in 2024 AL Manager of the Year voting.

Chambliss threw for over 3,600 yards and 21 touchdowns after taking over as the Rebel's starter the third game of the season. To earn his spots for the Feb. 6-22 Winter Games, the 21-year-old from Wisconsin simply needed to show up at the starting line for his quartet of events at the Pettit National Ice Center. He wrapped up the four-day trials Monday by winning the mass start. He also will compete in Italy in the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 meters, events in which he owns two world titles apiece.

Arizona holds No. 1 spot over Michigan by single point

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — What happened over the last month of the season for the Kansas City Chiefs figures to be a whole lot less interesting than what will transpire over the next few months, when a perennial juggernaut in desperate need of a reset begins work on the retooling.

Will tight end Travis Kelce retire after a superlative 13-year career, or will he come back for one more season in an attempt to wipe away the bitter taste of a 6-11 record? How will the Chiefs navigate free agency with glaring needs at several spots and precious little salary cap space? And what will they do with their first top-10 draft pick since Patrick Mahomes went 10th in 2017?

“Optimistic for the future going forward here,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “(General manager) Brett (Veach) has the controls from here with the draft, and he and his guys will do a great job in the draft, and as we work through free agency.”

The Chiefs not only had a streak of 10 consecutive playoff appearances end, they also had a nine-year dominance of the AFC West shattered by Denver. Their streak of seven conference title game appearances is over, and given the way the season went, it's almost hard to believe that the Chiefs played in the last three Super Bowls — with two wins.

But very little went right for the Chiefs this season, beginning with a loss to the Chargers in Brazil and ending with six consecutive defeats, leaving them with their worst record since going 2-14 the year before Reid arrived in Kansas City.

By mid-December, the Chiefs already had been eliminated from the playoffs.

Injuries may have been the biggest problem: Patrick Mahomes tore two ligaments in his knee, backup quarterback Gardner Minshew likewise tore his knee ligament and stars such as Rashee Rice and Trent McDuffie followed them to injured reserve.

But there also were glaring deficiencies on both sides of the ball.

“We've got a good nucleus of guys that are veteran players. They'll be back,” Reid said, “and I think you want that foundation, and that's where you start. And then you give Brett an opportunity to have the draft picks that he has and picking where he's picking; you know he's going to do a great job there. And then whatever happens free agent-wise, or guys we signed up — wherever that goes — you still have a long way to go to add people and do what you need. So, there'll be a fresh start coming up.”

The first big decision in Kansas City may lie not with the team but with Kelce, who is considering retirement. He said the choice to come back last season was relatively easy after a lopsided Super Bowl loss to Philadelphia. But with myriad interests outside football, and his engagement to pop star Taylor Swift, things have changed in his life over the past 12 months.

“I have so much love for this team, this organization and the people here,” said Kelce, who finished with 76 catches for 851 yards and five touchdowns. “I'll spend some time with them, go through exit meetings, get close to the family and figure things out.”

Mahomes is already well into rehab following surgery to repair his knee injury, and the Chiefs are cautiously optimistic that he will be ready for Week 1 next season. Everyone else who landed on injured reserve also is expected to be ready for next season.

Among veterans due to hit free agency are running backs Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt, wide receivers Marquise Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster, cornerbacks Josh Williams and Jaylen Watson, safeties Bryan Cook and Mike Edwards, linebacker Leo Chenal and defensive linemen Derrick Nnadi, Mike Pennel and Charles Omenihu. Several could be back on team-friendly deals.

The Chiefs will pick ninth overall in April, their highest since taking offensive tackle Eric Fisher first overall in 2013. They have a slew of needs on both sides of the ball, but look for them to target offensive playmakers — probably a running back — and someone who can rush the passer after finishing among the league's worst in quarterback sacks this season.

Peterson leads No. 17 Kansas against TCU after 26-point outing

LAWRENCE, Kan. –&nbsp;Kansas Athletics administrator and Jayhawks loyalist Dr. Scott "Scooter" Ward, a staple at the University of Kansas for more than 30 years, passed away Saturday afternoon, surrounded by family and friends at University of Kansas Health System. Ward was 59 years old.

Ward was a faculty member in the School of Education at the University of Kansas, before joining the Kansas Athletics staff in the summer of 2003. At the time of his passing, he was serving as the Director of Peak Performance and Leadership with the KU Athletics' Student-Athlete Development department. In his latest role at KU, Ward worked with KU LEADS and he assisted with mental performance aspects for all KU student-athletes.

Ward was in his 23rd year with Kansas Athletics and he and his wife, Robin, were loyal Jayhawk fans and were frequent supporters at KU home events. Prior to his most recent position, Ward spent 14 years in the KU academic support department, working mainly with men's basketball and volleyball. In the summer of 2009, he was promoted to associate athletics director for academic and career counseling. Ward's office was always open, and he welcomed anyone who came to visit.&nbsp; 

"The KU community lost a major part of its heart and soul today," Kansas Director of Athletics&nbsp;Travis Goff&nbsp;said. "Scooter was a deeply beloved member of our Kansas Athletics family and has touched countless lives in profound ways. While we grieve his loss, we are grateful for the many ways he has made us all better people. Our deepest love and prayers are with his wife, Robin, and his family and friends. We will celebrate his amazing life, and work every day to honor his legacy.

"And we know he will smile down upon us in the days ahead."

During Ward's time with men's basketball, Kansas had 35 Academic All-Big 12 selections, which is more than any other conference school. Included were first-team Academic All-Americans Cole Aldrich (2010) and Tyrel Reed (2011), while Aldrich was named the Academic All-American of the Year in 2010. Additionally, KU men's basketball was acknowledged in June 2015 with the NCAA's Public Recognition Award for achieving scores among the top 10 percent of all NCAA Division I men's basketball teams, a streak of nine-consecutive years honored.

"Today we lost one of Kansas' all-time great Jayhawks in Scott Ward," Kansas men's basketball coach Bill Self said. "Scooter has been an integral part of this university for more than three decades and he was a major part of our basketball program since 2003. Scooter headed our academic program and ensured that every student-athlete that ever competed here was on the path to earning his degree. But he was much more than just an academic person to our players and to our staff. He was the role model that provided kindness, strength and joy. He provided so many different things to our players to become better men. He loved working with our basketball team, and he also loved working with the volleyball program too. He did a phenomenal job with Ray (Bechard) and his group as well."

"Scooter was such an inspiration to so many," Self continued. "How many people you know got to get up at 5 or 5:30 in the morning to be at work by 8:00? He did this every day and never complained. Scooter battled so many major health issues, not only being paralyzed in a wheelchair since college, but he also suffered two torn aortas and several other issues that were life threatening just in the time that he worked with us. He never complained and always was a pillar of strength to everyone that knew him. This will be a big blow to all of our players, because each and everyone of them loved him, and this will be a big blow to our community, because he touched so many people. I hope that everybody holds his family, primarily Robin, in their thoughts and prayers, because, together, they probably made about as good of a team as any husband and wife ever has. Scooter will be missed, but for the first time in a long time, hopefully he can rest easy."

Ward earned three degrees from KU: a B.S.Ed. in education with an emphasis in exercise science in 1991, an M.S.Ed. in education with an emphasis in athletic administration and sport psychology in 1993, and a Ph.D. in education with an emphasis in sport psychology and support in counseling psychology in 1996.&nbsp;

"Rarely in life do you encounter someone who has made the impact on people's lives like Scooter did," longtime Kansas volleyball coach Ray Bechard said. "His influence impacted generations of Jayhawks, both the student-athletes and coaches. I was honored to call him my friend."

The Barton Community College wrestling team kicked off the 2026 portion of its schedule Sunday at the Jet Open in Wichita, Kansas, competing with a limited lineup as illness impacted availability. Sending just six wrestlers to the mats, the Cougars combined for an 8-14 overall record on the day, highlighted by a fourth-place finish from&nbsp;S'Ron Hill&nbsp;at 184-pounds.

Hill led the Cougars, turning in the top showing with a 4-2 performance. After dropping his opening bout to Drew Withington of Pratt, Hill responded with a strong run through the backside of the bracket, recording four straight victories, three by fall, to reach the third place match. The run included a 10-4 redemption decision over Withington in the consolation semifinals before Hill ultimately settled for fourth.

Despite the short roster, Barton saw competitive efforts throughout the lineup.&nbsp;Brennen Pfannenstiel&nbsp;(149-pounds) posted a 3-2 day, opening with a 2:02 fall and adding a 13-11 decision to reach the semifinals before falling to the eventual runner-up. Pfannenstiel continued battling through the consolation rounds before bowing out just shy of a placement bowing out in the consolation semifinals.

Joshua "AJ" Almanza&nbsp;(133-pounds) recorded the Cougars' other victory on the day, opening with a 6:36 fall before dropping his final two bouts to finish 1-2.

Additional Barton competitors included&nbsp;Jamal Garrett&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;Tyler Gouker&nbsp;(141),&nbsp;Brody Schnoebelen&nbsp;(197), and&nbsp;Logan Buchanan&nbsp;(285), each gaining valuable mat time as the Cougars worked through the tournament shorthanded.

Competing unattached,&nbsp;Michael Villarreal&nbsp;(285), also saw action, concluding his day 0-2.

Barton will look to return to full strength as the busy January action continues, traveling Friday and Saturday to the NJCAA Coaches Duals in Miami, Oklahoma, before opening conference play January 13 at Pratt in the annual Battle of Highway 281.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Daniel Carlson, a pending free agent, might have earned himself a contract either with the Raiders or another NFL team.

He made a career-long 60-yard field goal with eight seconds left to give Las Vegas a 14-12 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and end the Raiders’ 10-game losing streak. His previous long was 57 yards.

Both teams in large ways treated the finale like a preseason game.

Whether for injuries or other reasons, the Chiefs sat wide receiver Xavier Worthy, running back Isiah Pacheco and defensive ends George Karlaftis and Tyreke Smith among others, and the Raiders had a number of players hurt that included running back Raheem Mostert, guard Dylan Parham and defensive tackle Adam Butler.

Kansas City entered the game without quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Gardner Minshew, each out with knee injuries. The Chiefs hope to get Mahomes back by early next season in what they hope is the return to becoming more like the team that appeared in five of the previous six Super Bowls, three ending in championships.

Kenny Pickett started and was replaced by Aidan O'Connell in the second quarter as expected. O'Connell produced the game's key offensive play with a 21-yard pass to tight end Michael Mayer to help set up of Carlson's winning kick. Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — A.J. Dybantsa had 24 points to offset seven turnovers in his Big 12 Conference debut, Robert Wright III added 18 points and No. 10 BYU held off Kansas State 83-73 on Saturday to extend the Cougars' longest winning streak since 2010.

Richie Saunders had 13 points and Keba Keita pulled down 16 rebounds for the Cougars (13-1, 1-0), whose 10th win since a two-point loss to fourth-ranked UConn in late November is their best unbeaten stretch since Jimmer Fredette's senior season.

P.J. Haggerty led the Wildcats (9-5, 0-1) with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Abdi Bashir Jr. added 16 points, David Castillo scored 13 and Khamari McGriff finished with 12 points and eight boards.

Not only was the game a rare matchup of BYU and Kansas State — just the 11th time the schools met — it was a showdown between Dybantsa, the nation's second-leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, and Haggerty, who came in third at 22.9 per game.

The two stars, one a freshman and the other a fourth-year junior, lived up to the billing.

Dybantsa scored 14 of his points in the first half, mostly on the kind of midrange jumpers that could soon make him a fortune in the NBA. Haggerty answered with 14 of his own, most of those coming on physical drives to the basket.

The Cougars had the better supporting cast, though, and built a 45-35 lead by halftime.

Kansas State tried to mount a comeback in the second half, and Bashir had an open 3-point look to cut the lead to three with about 14 minutes to go. But after his shot rimmed out, Wright drilled a 3 at the other end for BYU — a six-point swing in a matter of seconds.

The Cougars never allowed the Wildcats to make another run over the final 10 minutes.

BYU plays Arizona State on Wednesday night.

Kansas State visits No. 1 Arizona the same night.

Dybantsa had 24 points to offset seven turnovers in his Big 12 Conference debut, Robert Wright III added 18 points and No. 10 BYU held off Kansas State 83-73 on Saturday to extend the Cougars' longest winning streak since 2010.Richie Saunders had 13 points and Keba Keita pulled down 16 rebounds for the Cougars (13-1, 1-0), whose 10th win since a two-point loss to fourth-ranked UConn in late November is their best unbeaten stretch since Jimmer Fredette's senior season.P.J. Haggerty led the Wildcats (9-5, 0-1) with 24 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Abdi Bashir Jr. added 16 points, David Castillo scored 13 and Khamari McGriff finished with 12 points and eight boards.Not only was the game a rare matchup of BYU and Kansas State — just the 11th time the schools met — it was a showdown between Dybantsa, the nation's second-leading scorer at 23.1 points per game, and Haggerty, who came in third at 22.9 per game.The two stars, one a freshman and the other a fourth-year junior, lived up to the billing.Dybantsa scored 14 of his points in the first half, mostly on the kind of midrange jumpers that could soon make him a fortune in the NBA. Haggerty answered with 14 of his own, most of those coming on physical drives to the basket.The Cougars had the better supporting cast, though, and built a 45-35 lead by halftime.Kansas State tried to mount a comeback in the second half, and Bashir had an open 3-point look to cut the lead to three with about 14 minutes to go. ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Darryn Peterson got back on the court for No. 17 Kansas, though couldn't stay long enough to help the Jayhawks get a win.

Still struggling with leg problems and with the Jayhawks limiting his minutes, Peterson left for good with more than 10 minutes remaining Saturday and&nbsp;UCF beat No. 17 Kansas 81-75.

Peterson scored 23 of his 26 points in the first half after missing the last two games. But after playing about 23 minutes, the freshman's legs started bothering him and the Jayhawks sat him as part of their recovery plan and as a precaution.

“I thought he looked pretty darn good,” coach Bill Self said. “That’s been a concern that his legs feel differently in the second half. A lot of that I think today is if I could have played him less in the first half, would he have been more available in the second half? And I think the answer is yes.”

Peterson missed seven games with a hamstring injury in November. He returned to play in four games before missing the last two with cramps.

He looked like a player who is expected to be one of the top picks in the NBA draft on Saturday, but the Jayhawks had to overuse him in the first half.

“He is one of the best basketball players in college basketball,” UCF coach Johnny Dawkins said. “When people are saying that, they are absolutely right. He is one of the best players I have seen in a number of years.”

Peterson has played in just five games this season, notably&nbsp;scoring 22 at North Carolina&nbsp;and then 17 each&nbsp;against Missouri&nbsp;and at&nbsp;NC State. He has played a total of 127 minutes in those five games.

The Jayhawks scored only three points in the next six minutes after Peterson departed Saturday, falling behind by nine. They rallied to tie the game before falling short while Peterson used a massage gun on his left leg on the bench throughout the second half.
