The Barton Community College swimming teams returned to the pool for their second meet of the season Friday afternoon, competing against fellow in-state foes at the Sunflower Showdown inside the University of Kansas' Robinson Natatorium.

The Cougar men came up just short of the team title with a runner-up finish, while the Lady Cougars posted a fourth-place result. Over the course of the day, Barton produced seven event victories, including five individual titles and pair of relay titles, along with three new program top 10 times and more than a dozen combined personal best performances across the lineup.

Men's RecapFreshman&nbsp;Caio Ribeiro&nbsp;continued his dominant start to the season, collecting three individual titles while leading a pair of podium sweeps for the Cougars. C. Ribeiro opened his day by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.13 before returning to capture the 100-yard freestyle crown in 47.21. The freshman capped his day with a third victory, claiming the 500-yard freestyle in 4:52.96.

Barton's first sweep came in the 200-yard freestyle, with&nbsp;Javier Vargas Hidalgo&nbsp;(1:48.10) and&nbsp;Mateo Wallet&nbsp;(1:51.78) following C. Ribeiro to the wall. The Cougars replicated the feat in the 100-yard freestyle, as&nbsp;Joao Ribeiro&nbsp;(48.77) and Wallet (48.98) joined the freshman on the podium.

Ricardo Marques&nbsp;added two individual titles, topping the field in both the 100-yard butterfly (52.76) and 100-yard backstroke (56.73).

Barton's team dominance was in full effect as the 200-yard freestyle tandem of Vargas Hidalgo, Marques, C. Ribeiro, and J. Ribeiro clocked a 1:29.05 for the ninth fastest time in program history, while the 200-yard medley of&nbsp;Cameron Sein, Marques, J. Ribeiro, and Vargas Hidalgo also topped the field in 1:41.22.

Across the lineup, Barton added seven personal bests and three season bests, highlighted by new lifetime best marks from Vargas Hidalgo,&nbsp;Connor Watson, and&nbsp;Lautaro Caspe&nbsp;in multiple events.

Women's RecapThe Cougar women produced a pair of program top-10 performances, both coming in relay action.

The 200-yard medley relay team of&nbsp;Avery Stewart,&nbsp;Katy Alvarez, MaKayla Baxter, and&nbsp;Jocelyn Hamilton&nbsp;placed ninth overall, cutting two seconds off last weekend's time with a 2:14.09 finish to remain eighth in program history. The quartet of&nbsp;Irene Lara, Baxter, Stewart, and Alvarez added the ninth-fastest time in program history with a 2:05.07 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, earning a 12th place finish.

Individually, Alvarez led the way with Barton's top finish, placing eighth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season best time of 1:18.39.

Barton's biggest impact came in the 50-yard freestyle, where all four Cougars set personal or season bests. Stewart led the charge with a career best 27.57 to finish 13th, followed by Alvarez's season best 29.80 for 16th. Hamilton (34.28) and Lara (35.57) rounded out the effort with personal bests for 18th and 19th respectively.

Barton men finish runner-up, combine for seven titles at Sunflower Showdown

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Kansas' defense came up with two decisive plays near the goal line, setting up the Jayhawks' go-ahead touchdown with a strip sack and fumble recovery to stop UCF on three consecutive plays from the 1 with less than two minutes remaining to help Kansas beat the Knights 27-20 on Saturday night.

Kansas' Trey Lathan recovered a fumble at the 2 late in the third quarter off a strip sack from Jalen Dye, setting up the go-ahead 2-yard touchdown run from Leshon Williams. Lathan then tackled Cam Fancher on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 1:47 to secure the victory.

“You are expecting to lose in that situation,” Lathan said. “But when you come out with a W, it’s a great feeling.”

Kansas (4-2, 2-1 Big 12) lost last week’s game to Cincinnati after a goal line battle, ending with a Bearcats' 2-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds remaining.

UCF drove to the Kansas 22 after getting the ball back, but four straight incompletions that included a pass breakup in the end zone by Austin Alexander, ended the Knights' final threat.

Kansas erased an early 14-0 lead from UCF (3-2, 0-2) after Myles Montgomery and the Knights ran all over the Jayhawks in the first half.

Jalon Daniels led the charge for Kansas, throwing for 235 yards on 18-for-26 passing. Williams rushed for 58 yards and three touchdowns for the Jayhawks.

“These guys are growing,” Kansas coach Lance Leipold said. “I think this can be a big one for them to gain some confidence.”

Montgomery rushed for 99 of his 110 yards in the first half, scoring two touchdowns to stake the Knights to an early lead.

UCF’s Tayven Jackson finished with 97 yards on 14-for-23 passing. He left the game after his turnover and came out of the locker room with his left arm in a sling. Coach Scott Frost said X-rays on his shoulder were negative.

Fancher, who started UCF’s opening game against Jacksonville State before leaving with an injury, completed 8 of 14 passes for 79 yards.

The Knights could not find answers in the second half and lost for the second straight game.

“I think we're one of the most talented teams in the Big 12, we've just got to finish,” UCF receiver Duane Thomas Jr. said. “We have to play a complete football game. We can't go out the first two quarters and lay down the next two.”

Part of the shift in the game came from Kansas linebacker Bangally Kamara, who was coming off suspension in the first half after a second-half targeting penalty last week against Cincinnati. Kamara finished with four tackles and provided a boost for the Jayhawks' defense.

Both teams stayed on the field after pregame warmups for a moment of silence to recognize UCF offensive line coach Shawn Clark. Clark passed away Sept. 21. He joined UCF's staff after five years as the head coach at Appalachian State.

Several players for Kansas were fighting through injury, including Williams. The biggest was to kicker Laith Marjan, who made two field goals. His 41-yarder in the third quarter just made it over the crossbar, clipping it before going through.

Leipold admitted Marjan was probably a bit fatigued after he kicked the ensuing kickoff out of bounds following the short field goal.

Kansas: The Jayhawks have been known for their offense throughout the season, but their defense stepped up in a big way to stymie the Knights.

UCF: The Knights will again face quarterback questions after Jackson left the game with an injury. Jackson left last week's game with a shoulder injury. Backup quarterback Jacurri Brown also missed the game with a shoulder injury.

Kansas travels to face No. 11 Texas Tech on Saturday.

UCF hits the road to face Cincinnati on Saturday.

Kansas' defense stymies UCF to escape with 27-20 win

WACO, Texas (AP) — Connor Hawkins kicked a 53-yard field goal with 31 seconds left after Jacob Redding's go-ahead 66-yard interception return for a touchdown as Baylor rallied twice in the fourth quarter for a 35-34 victory over Kansas State on Saturday.

Hawkins matched the longest kick of his career after Luis Rodriguez had put the Wildcats in front with a 22-yard field goal with 1:48 remaining. Kansas State (2-4, 1-2 Big 12) had to settle for the kick after having a first down at the Baylor 2-yard line.

Rodriguez had a chance for a game-winner from 56 yards, but 6-foot-4 defensive end Cooper Lanz blocked it with 2 seconds to go. The Bears (4-2, 2-1) held on two weeks after losing to Arizona State on a game-ending field goal in their previous home game.

“It’s a roller coaster for sure, an emotional roller coaster,” Baylor quarterback Sawyer Robertson said. “I remember sitting in here a couple of weeks ago and saying that I know one thing for sure, we’re going to fight to the very end. Because of that, we put ourselves in a position to win.”

Michael Trigg had career highs with eight catches for 155 yards and sparked Baylor's rally from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a 42-yard grab a play before making a spectacular one-handed catch while getting one foot down on the sideline, gaining another 29 yards.

Robertson's 11-yard scoring pass to Bryson Washington came on the next play, and Robertson’s 2-point conversion run cut Baylor's deficit to 31-25.

Avery Johnson, who threw for 339 yards and two TDs and ran for a score, had kept a potential clock-killing drive alive with two third-down conversions but he threw into traffic on first down in Baylor territory with the six-point lead.

Redding picked off the pass, ran left up the sideline and cut back inside with the speedy Johnson pursuing to finish off the score untouched. Hawkins' PAT kick put Baylor ahead 32-31 with less than five minutes to go.

“I’d be lying if I said a couple of years ago that I’d be in this position,” Redding said. “I was running, I was like, ‘I can’t believe this is happening.’ And then I scored and I was like, ‘No flags?’ This is a dream come true.”

Johnson's 12-yard scoring pass to Jayce Brown broke a 17-17 halftime tie, and the Wildcats went up two touchdowns on Dylan Edwards' 5-yard run late in the third quarter.

“We did things well enough to win, but we didn’t earn the win,” Kansas State coach Chris Klieman said. “That’s why we’re walking out of here with a one-point loss and a lot of woulda, shoulda, couldas.”

Kansas State: It's the third time this season the Wildcats have led or been tied in the fourth quarter of a loss. They've had a one-score margin a nation-leading five times in six games. Three of the losses are by three points or fewer.

Baylor: Robertson had two TD tosses, ending his streak of consecutive games with at least three scoring passes at five. It was the longest since Kyler Murray had eight in a row with Oklahoma in 2018. His 345 yards passing were almost right on his nation-leading average.

The temperature approach 90 degrees late in the game on the first Saturday in October in Texas. It was on Klieman's mind. “We played a lot of guys because we had guys injured. Plus, it was hot,” the coach said.

Besides the one-handed grab, Trigg had a leaping catch over the middle in the first half on a drive that appeared to end with him making another athletic catch in the back of the end zone. It was overturned on review, apparently because he didn't have full control. “We knew we had a mismatch nightmare on the kid,” Klieman said.

Penn State has suffered another tough loss, this time to UCLA, in what so farf is the upset of the year in college football. The Nittany Lions, who were ranked No. 7, may drop out of the AP Top 25 after this 42-37 defeat. Texas, ranked No. 9, lost to Florida and also could be knocked out of the rankings. Alabama and Georgia are expected to move up in the rankings. Illinois and Notre Dame also had strong performances, while South Florida and Cincinnati are making a case to enter the Top 25.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Shohei Ohtani has led the Dodgers to a 5-3 win over the Phillies in Game 1 of their NL Division Series. On Saturday night, Ohtani struck out nine over six innings, despite striking out four times at bat. Teoscar Hernández hit a crucial three-run homer to rally the Dodgers. Ohtani and Roki Sasaki made history as the first Japanese-born starter and reliever to earn a win and save in the same postseason game. Ohtani faced intense pressure from Phillies fans but focused on pitching to secure the victory. The Dodgers have a day off before Game 2 on Monday.

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Deion Sanders says he's hurting like crazy and believes he has more blood clots in his leg. The Colorado football coach sat at times late in a loss at TCU on Saturday night. Sanders says he's not getting blood to his leg and that it's throbbing. He says he has a doctor’s appointment Monday to see about the issue. The 58-year-old Sanders spent time away from his team this summer as he went through treatment for bladder cancer. He had two toes amputated from his left foot in 2021 because of blood clot issues. He had a procedure in 2023 to remove a blood clot from his right leg.

SINGAPORE (AP) — George Russell has won the Singapore Grand Prix in dominant style as McLaren secured the Formula 1 constructors’ championship with six races to go. Russell stayed in control from pole position to take his and Mercedes’ second win of the year ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who held off Lando Norris for second place despite struggling with car problems. Norris banged wheels with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished fourth, as he overtook at the start. Piastri complained to the team over the radio about Norris’ driving.

SHANGHAI (AP) — Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has upset fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz at the Shanghai Masters. On Sunday, Mpetshi Perricard won 6-4, 7-5, advancing to the fourth round. He sent down 12 aces and took a break in each set. Novak Djokovic also progressed after defeating German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann. Djokovic rallied to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 in two hours and 45 minutes. He struggled with Hanfmann's serve and was sick during the second set. Djokovic is aiming for a fifth title in Shanghai. Top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz is absent due to minor ailments.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Fan favorite Alex Pereira dethroned Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 320, taking the light heavyweight championship with a first-round stoppage Saturday night. Pereira (13-3-0) floored Ankalaev (21-2-1) after hurting him with a huge right hand and quickly went to work using thunderous elbows during a ground-and-pound before referee Herb Dean stepped in to stop the bout at the 1:20 mark. Pereira brought an end to Ankalaev’s 14-match unbeaten streak, while exacting revenge for a loss in the fighters’ first meeting in March.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Mark Sanchez has been arrested after he was apparently stabbed in an overnight altercation in downtown Indianapolis. Sanchez was charged with battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication — all misdemeanors. Indianapolis police said Sanchez was in a hospital and had not been booked into a detention center. He was in stable condition, according to Fox Sports. Police said earlier in the day that they were investigating a confrontation between two men, one of whom was hospitalized with stab wounds. Sanchez was in Indianapolis to call Sunday’s Raiders-Colts game.

TORONTO (AP) — Alejandro Kirk hit two solo home runs, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also connected and the Toronto Blue Jays won a postseason game for the first time since 2016 by thumping the New York Yankees 10-1 in Game 1 of their AL Division Series. The Colorado football coach sat at times late in a loss at TCU on Saturday night. Sanders says he's not getting blood to his leg and that it's throbbing. He says he has a doctor’s appointment Monday to see about the issue. The 58-year-old Sanders spent time away from his team this summer as he went through treatment for bladder cancer. He had two toes amputated from his left foot in 2021 because of blood clot issues. He had a procedure in 2023 to remove a blood clot from his right leg.SINGAPORE (AP) — George Russell has won the Singapore Grand Prix in dominant style as McLaren secured the Formula 1 constructors’ championship with six races to go. Russell stayed in control from pole position to take his and Mercedes’ second win of the year ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who held off Lando Norris for second place despite struggling with car problems. Norris banged wheels with his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, who finished fourth, as he overtook at the start. Piastri complained to the team over the radio about Norris’ driving.SHANGHAI (AP) — Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard has upset fourth-ranked Taylor Fritz at the Shanghai Masters. Indianapolis police said Sanchez was in a hospital and had not been booked into a detention center. He was in stable condition, according to Fox Sports. Temperatures in early October have been a little warmer than
usual but Saturday morning still felt a little like fall. Great Bend High
School cross country runners participated in the Bishop Carroll Rush in Brown Thrush
races that included a handful of teams from Wichita and the surrounding area.

A pair of 5A powers ran away with the girls’ race. The host Golden
Eagles scored 42 points to edge Kapaun by just five places. Great Bend finished
third with 78 points, well ahead of fourth-place Maize’s 125 points.

Kapaun’s Ava Claasen dominated the race by more than a
minute as the only runner under 18 minutes in 17:46. Panther freshman Sydney
Stein ran second in 18:50.98, followed by classmate Decorah Schroeter seven
seconds later for the bronze. Junior Bella Long ran 12th in 19:48.80
to miss the top 10 by just three seconds. Sophomore Samantha Negaard returned
from an injury to place 40th in 22:38.38, and Makenzie Gwin capped
team scoring five seconds later in 22:43.46 for 41st. Alyssa
Prendergrast finished 62nd in 24:18.04, and Sydney James ran 67th
in 24:38.98.

Bishop Carroll and Kapaun also won the boys’ side with 45
and 52 points, respectively, Maize finished third with 78 points, and Great
bend finished eighth overall with 177 points to miss seventh place by just
three spots.

Kapaun’s senior standout Daniel Enriquez blazed a 15:34 to
win the race by more than 40 seconds. Brogan Lashley paced the Panthers in 12th
overall in 17:02.73, just 13 seconds from a top-10 finish. Tavon Stroup
finished 32nd in 17:44.34. Isaac Aldana ran 49th in
18:20.17, just half a second ahead of Parker Coleman in 50th. Noah
Kaiser collected the final team points in 54th with a time of 18:26.75.
Julian Hernandez placed 83rd in 19:47.68, half a second ahead of
teammate Evan Masons in 84th.

Great Bend quarterback Daxton Minton was one completion shy
of a perfect night last Friday in Wichita. This Friday at home, back under the
lights of Memorial Stadium for just a second time this season, Minton found a
way to boost his stat line. The senior threw for four touchdowns on his first
five attempts, finishing the night a perfect 6-for-6 for 128 yards. The result
was a 41-0 win against Western Athletic Conference-foe Dodge City.

“Our offensive line stepped up an insane amount,” Minton
said. “We were able to run the ball against their 4-man front with five guys in
the box. That was huge tonight, and that’s what won us the game was our
offensive line. Our defense not giving up a point – it’s easy to win a game
when your defense doesn’t give up a point.”

The Panthers led 14-0 just 10 offensive plays into the
night. Minton and senior Conner Holladay had big runs in the first series,
which Minton capped with a 28-yard touchdown pass to senior Jacob Hall less
than two minutes into the night. 

The Great Bend defense also flexed early. Senior Ian Premer
picked off a Ty Scheck pass and returned it 65 yards for a score, but that play
was called back on a hold after the interception. Just a few plays later,
Premer broke free for a 29-yard touchdown run to put the Panthers ahead 14-0
with 3:07 remaining in the first quarter.

Dodge City ran 33 plays in the first half to Great Bend’s
15. The result was a clock in constant motion. The Panthers nearly found the
end zone again on a long run from Holladay that ended in a fumble at the Demon
2-yard line. Dodge City broke into the Red Zone before the end of the half but
was unable to find points.

Great Bend scored on its first three possessions of the
second half. Facing fourth-and-goal, Minton found Premer on a 4-yard strike and
20-0 Panther lead late in the third quarter. On the first play of the fourth quarter,
Minton hit a wide-open Cooper Ohnmacht in stride for a 58-yard touchdown.

“I can usually tell if it’s going to be a good throw or not
as it comes out of my hand,” Minton said. “I thought I overthrew Cooper, but he
made a heck of a play to go and get that ball and score for me.”

Senior Koehn Ribordy ended the next two Red Demon drives
with interceptions. Minton hooked up with Premer on the first play following
the first pick for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Holladay scored from 21 yards out
with four minutes to play to set the clock in motion for good at 41-0.

After allowing 88 rushing yards on 26 carries in the first
half, the Panther defense buckled down in the final two quarters, allowing just
34 more yards on 11 attempts. Senior Tyjour Hooke paced the Demons with 57
yards on 16 carries. Scheck finished the night with 60 yards and three
interceptions on 7-of-12 passing.

Minton finished his night with 128 yards and the four
touchdowns on 6-of-6 passing. Premer caught two balls for 34 yards and a pair
of scores. Ohnmacht had the 58-yard touchdown reception, and Hall finished two
32 yards and a score on his two catches. Holladay rushed for 101 yards and a
touchdown on just 10 carries. Minton added 75 rushing yards on his nine attempts,
and Premer finished with 64 yards and a score on five attempts. Freshman
Giovanni Cruz booted through six of his seven PAT tries.

Great Bend moves to 5-0 on the season. Liberal outlasted
Garden City 39-34 to move to 5-0 on the year. The Panthers host the Redskins
next week for Homecoming.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Lamar Jackson has been ruled out for Baltimore’s game against Houston on Sunday after missing a week of practice because of a hamstring injury. Jackson had to leave last weekend’s loss at Kansas City in the second half. Cooper Rush is in line to start for the Ravens, who have lost nine of their last 11 games when Jackson doesn’t play. ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Texas Rangers have hired Skip Schumaker as their manager. The team agreed Friday night to a four-year contract with the former NL Manager of the Year. Schumaker’s deal was announced after Chris Young, the team’s president of baseball operations, acknowledged earlier in the day that the team was focused on an internal candidate in its search to replace Bruce Bochy. NEW YORK (AP) — Rookie right-hander Cam Schlittler struck out 12 in eight dominant innings and the New York Yankees&nbsp;beat the Boston Red Sox&nbsp;4-0 on Thursday night to win their AL Wild Card Series in a deciding third game.

Taking his place in Yankees-Red Sox rivalry lore, the 24-year-old Schlittler overpowered Boston with 100 mph heat in his 15th major league start and pitched New York into a best-of-five Division Series against AL East champion Toronto beginning Saturday.

“A star is born tonight. He’s a special kid, man,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “He is not afraid. He expects this.”

Amed Rosario and Anthony Volpe each had an RBI single in a four-run fourth as New York became the first team to lose the opener of a best-of-three Wild Card Series and come back to advance since Major League Baseball expanded the first round of the playoffs in 2022.

“It felt like the most pressure-packed game I’ve ever experienced — World Series, clinching games, whatever,” Boone said.

Schlittler, who debuted in the majors July 9, grew up a Red Sox fan in Walpole, Massachusetts — but has said several times he wanted to play for the Yankees. He had faced Boston only once before, as a freshman at Northeastern in a 2020 spring training exhibition.

Schlittler said he spoke about the moment Wednesday with Yankees great Andy Pettitte, a five-time World Series champion and winner of a record 19 postseason games.

"I woke up and I was locked in, so I knew exactly what I needed to do to go out there, especially against my hometown team,” Schlittler said.

He outpitched Connelly Early, a 23-year-old left-hander who debuted on Sept. 9 and became Boston’s youngest postseason starting pitcher since 21-year-old Babe Ruth in 1916.

Schlittler struck out two more than any other Yankees pitcher had in his postseason debut, allowing just five singles and walking none. He threw 11 pitches 100 mph or faster — including six in the first inning.

Schlittler threw 75 of 107 pitches for strikes, starting 22 of 29 batters with strikes and topping out at 100.8 mph. David Bednar worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth as the Red Sox failed to advance a runner past second base.

Bucky Dent threw out the ceremonial first pitch on the 47th anniversary of his go-ahead, three-run homer for New York at Fenway Park in an AL East tiebreaker game, and the Yankees went on to vanquish their longtime rivals the way they often used to.

New York, which arrived packed for a late-night flight to Toronto, won its second straight after losing eight of nine playoff meetings with Boston dating to 2004 and edged ahead 14-13 in postseason games between the teams.

The Red Sox cost themselves in the fourth with a defense that committed a big league-high 116 errors during the regular season.

New York’s rally began when Cody Bellinger hit a soft fly into the triangle between center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela, right fielder Wilyer Abreu and second baseman Romy González. The ball fell just in front of Rafaela, 234 feet from home plate, as Bellinger hustled into second with a double.

Giancarlo Stanton walked on a full count and with one out Rosario grounded a single into left, just past diving shortstop Trevor Story, to drive in Bellinger with the first run.

Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s single loaded the bases, and Volpe hit a grounder just past González, who had been shifted toward second, and into right for an RBI single and a 2-0 lead.

Austin Wells hit a potential double-play grounder that first baseman Nathaniel Lowe tried to backhand on an in-between hop. The ball glanced off his glove and into shallow right field for an error as two runs scored.

“We didn’t play defense,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “They didn’t hit the ball hard, but they found holes and it happened fast.”

Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon made the&nbsp;defensive play of the game&nbsp;when he caught Jarren Duran’s eighth-inning foul pop and somersaulted over the railing into Boston’s dugout, then emerged smiling and apparently unhurt.

RHP Luis Gil (4-1, 3.32 ERA) or RHP Will Warren (9-8, 4.44) will likely start the Division Series opener Saturday for the Yankees at Toronto, which is expected to go with RHP Kevin Gausman (10-11, 3.59) or RHP Shane Bieber (4-2, 3.57).

Schlittler strikes out 12 in postseason debut as Yankees beat Red Sox 4-0 to win Wild Card Series

CLEVELAND (AP) —&nbsp;Dillon Dingler hit a tiebreaking homer&nbsp;in the sixth inning, Wenceel Pérez drove in a pair of runs in a four-run seventh and the Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 on Thursday in the deciding Game 3 of their AL Wild Card Series.

It is the second straight season the Tigers have won a Wild Card Series on the road. Detroit heads to Seattle for the first two games of a best-of-five Division Series, with Game 1 on Saturday.

It was also a little bit of sweet revenge for the Tigers after their season ended in Cleveland last year with a loss in Game 5 of the ALDS.

“I don’t think it needs to be any sweeter than what it feels like right now because you have to earn these wins,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “You have to earn the opportunity to play in October. You’ve got to earn a full-series win over a good team, a hot team, a team that we know well.”

The AL West champion Mariners, the second seed, took four of six regular-season meetings with the Tigers, who are the third AL wild card.

José Ramírez drove in Cleveland’s first run with a single. The AL Central champion Guardians were 15 1/2 games back in early July before completing the biggest comeback in division or league play in baseball history.

However, they ran out of steam in the playoffs as Detroit turned the page after posting the second-worst record in the majors in September (7-17).

“It stinks for it to end that way. I couldn’t be more proud of them, of what we accomplished,” Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. “It’s not enough. We want more. And I think that’s really the message, is let this sting. We’re close. We are really close. We’re not quite there yet.”

The game was tied 1-all with two outs in the sixth when Dingler got an elevated changeup from Joey Cantillo on a 1-1 count and drove it 401 feet into the bleachers in left-center to put the Tigers on top.

It was also the first postseason hit and RBI for the Tigers catcher.

“I was able to get a pitch to hit and do a little damage,” Dingler said. “I feel like the momentum in the series was the biggest thing. The team with the biggest momentum or the most momentum was the one that was going to carry on.”

Detroit then broke it open in the seventh by sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four times to make it 6-1.

With one out and the bases loaded, Pérez lined a base hit to right off Erik Sabrowski to drive in Javier Báez and Parker Meadows. Hunter Gaddis came in and gave up RBI singles to Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, which brought in Kerry Carpenter and Pérez.

Kyle Finnegan got the win, retiring all four batters he faced in relief. Cantillo took the loss.

“When Wenceel got the hit — I don’t know why, in baseball, it seems like one good thing happens and then two, three, four, five at-bats in a row were exceptional,” Hinch said. “We wanted to get even more greedy and do more. But it was nice to separate and breathe a little bit. But knowing they weren’t going to give in.”

The Tigers opened the scoring in the third. With one out and runners on the corners, Carpenter hit a grounder down the first-base line that deflected off C.J. Kayfus’ glove when he tried to backhand it. The ball rolled into foul territory near the stands as Meadows scored. Carpenter went to second and Gleyber Torres advanced to third on what the official scorer ruled a double

The Guardians tied it in the fourth. George Valera led off with a double to the right-field corner and scored on Ramírez’s base hit on a knuckle curve by starter Jack Flaherty on a full count.

The single was the 40th hit of Ramírez’s postseason career, making him the fifth player in franchise history to reach that mark.

In the eighth inning, Detroit reliever Will Vest dropped a throw while covering first base on Ramírez's grounder for an error that allowed Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan to score. Vest quickly recovered the ball near the dugout, however, and threw out Ramírez trying to reach second on the play.

Dingler, Pérez lead Tigers past Guardians 6-3 and into AL Division Series against Mariners

CHICAGO (AP) — Pete Crow-Armstrong hit an RBI single off a shaky Yu Darvish, and the Chicago Cubs shut down Fernando Tatis Jr. and the San Diego Padres for a clinching 3-1 victory in Game 3 of their NL Wild Card Series on Thursday.

Backed by a raucous crowd of 40,895 at Wrigley Field, Chicago&nbsp;used its stellar defense&nbsp;to advance in the postseason for the first time since 2017. Michael Busch hit a solo homer, and Jameson Taillon pitched four shutout innings before manager Craig Counsell used five relievers to close it out.

“This group's battle-tested,” Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson said. “This group can grind it out. This group never backs down from and shies away from anything. This is such an amazing thing to be a part of.”

After Brad Keller faltered in the ninth — allowing Jackson Merrill’s leadoff homer and hitting two batters with pitches — Andrew Kittredge earned the save by retiring Jake Cronenworth on a bouncer to third and Freddy Fermin on a flyball to center field.

Next up for Chicago is a matchup with the NL Central champion Brewers in a compelling Division Series, beginning with Game 1 on Saturday in Milwaukee.

Counsell managed the Brewers for nine years before he was hired by the Cubs in November 2023, and he has been lustily booed in Milwaukee ever since he departed.

“It’s going to be a great atmosphere,” Counsell said. “It’s Cubs-Brewers. That’s going to be as good as it gets. It’s always a great atmosphere when the two teams play each other.”

It was another painful ending for San Diego after it made the postseason for the fourth time in six years but fell short of a pennant again. The Padres forced a decisive Game 3 with&nbsp;a 3-0 victory&nbsp;on Wednesday, but their biggest stars flopped in the series finale.

“There’s a lot of hurt guys in that clubhouse, but we left it all out on the field, and there’s no regrets on anybody’s part,” manager Mike Shildt said. “Just disappointed.”

Tatis went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, including a flyball to right that stranded runners at second and third in the fifth. Machado, who hit a two-run homer in Game 2, bounced to Swanson for the final out of the eighth, leaving a runner at third.

“It’s not fun at all. We definitely missed an opportunity,” Tatis said.

Darvish also struggled against his former team. The Japanese right-hander was pulled after the first four Cubs batters reached in the second inning, capped by the first of Crow-Armstrong’s three hits.

Jeremiah Estrada came in and issued a bases-loaded walk to Swanson, handing the Cubs a 2-0 lead. Estrada limited the damage by striking out Matt Shaw before Busch bounced into an inning-ending double play.

Taillon allowed two hits and struck out four. Caleb Thielbar got two outs before Daniel Palencia wiggled out of a fifth-inning jam while earning his second win of the series. Drew Pomeranz handled the seventh before Keller worked the eighth.

The Cubs supported their bullpen with another solid day in the field. Swanson made a slick play on Luis Arraez’s leadoff grounder in the sixth, and then turned an inning-ending double play following a walk to Machado.

Crow-Armstrong, who went 0 for 6 with five strikeouts in the first two games of the series, robbed Machado of a hit with a sliding catch in center in the first.

“It’s just the next step for us,” Busch said. “You set out a goal before each and every year to do stuff like this, and you celebrate it, and it’s been fun to celebrate and continue to celebrate it tonight, but there’s a lot of work ahead.”

Chicago went 7-6 against Milwaukee this season, outscoring the Brewers 60-56. The NL Central rivals last played in August, when the Cubs won three times in a five-game series.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones was able to return after appearing to hurt his left knee in the third quarter against the Los Angeles Rams. Jones took a blind-side hit from Rams linebacker Byron Young on third-and-goal midway through the third quarter with the 49ers leading 17-7. He was already wearing a brace on the knee and grabbed at it while down on the turf. But after appearing to be in significant pain, Jones eventually popped back up and jogged off the field. He tested his mobility on the sideline and came back in following a touchdown drive by the Rams. The 49ers won 27-20 in overtime.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The State Department will increase staffing at certain U.S. embassies and consulates to accommodate an expected major jump in visa applications from soccer fans wanting to attend World Cup matches in the United States next year. The department will send hundreds of additional consular officers to “designated countries” to handle the demand for visa interviews. The number of staffers and the countries where they will go have yet to be determined because the 48-team field for the 2026 World Cup hasn't been finalized. OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Offensive tackle Ronnie Stanley and cornerback Nate Wiggins were back at practice for the Baltimore Ravens, but star quarterback Lamar Jackson and safety Kyle Hamilton were absent during the portion open to reporters.
