ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore was still jailed on Thursday morning, according to court records, less than 24 hours after he was fired for what the university said was an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

The Washtenaw County Jail did not provide information about why the 39-year-old Moore was detained, details on his bond or whether any court appearances were scheduled.

In response to media inquires about Moore, the Pittsfield Township Police Department issued a statement that did not mention anyone by name. According to the statement, police were called to investigate an alleged assault in Pittsfield Township, a couple of miles south of Michigan Stadium, and took a person into custody.

The incident was not random and there was no ongoing threat to public safety, police said, and the person was jailed pending a review of charges by prosecutors.

“Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details,” the statement said.

<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/michigan-wolverines-football">Michigan</a>&nbsp;said it fired Moore for cause after finding evidence of his relationship with the staffer, ending an up-and-down, two-year tenure that saw the Wolverines take a step back on the field after winning the national championship and getting&nbsp;punished by the NCAA.

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of university policy, and UM maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” athletic director Warde Manuel said in a statement.

The announcement did not include details of the alleged relationship. Moore, who is married with three young daughters, did not return a message from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Moore was 9-3 this year after going 8-5 in his debut season.

He signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $5.5 million last year. According to the terms of his deal, the university will not have to buy out the remaining years of Moore’s contract because he was fired for cause.

College football’s winningest program is suddenly looking for a third coach in four years, shortly after&nbsp;a busy cycle&nbsp;that included Lane Kiffin leaving playoff-bound Mississippi for LSU.

Moore, the team’s former offensive coordinator, was promoted to the lead the Wolverines after they won the 2023 national title. He succeeded Jim Harbaugh, who returned to the NFL to lead the Los Angeles Chargers.

The&nbsp;18th-ranked Wolverines&nbsp;(9-3, 7-2 Big Ten) are set to play&nbsp;No. 14 Texas&nbsp;on Dec. 31 in the Citrus Bowl.

Biff Poggi, who filled in for Moore when he was suspended earlier this season, will serve as interim coach.

Moore, in his second season, was suspended for two games this year as part of self-imposed sanctions for NCAA violations related to a&nbsp;sign-stealing scandal. The NCAA added a third game to the suspension, which would have kept Moore off the sideline for next year’s opener against Western Michigan.

Moore previously deleted an entire 52-message text thread on his personal phone with former staffer&nbsp;Connor Stalions, who led the team’s sign-sealing operation. The texts were later recovered and shared with the NCAA.

Just a few years ago, Moore was Harbaugh’s top assistant and regarded as a&nbsp;rising star.

Moore, who is from Derby, Kansas, didn’t start playing football until his junior year of high school. He played for Butler County Community College in Kansas and as an offensive lineman for coach Bob Stoops at Oklahoma during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

His coaching career began as a graduate assistant at Louisville before moving on to Central Michigan, where he caught Harbaugh’s attention. Harbaugh hired him in 2018 as tight ends coach.

Moore was promoted to offensive line coach and co-offensive coordinator in 2021, when the Wolverines bounced back from a 2-4, pandemic-shortened season and began a three-year run of excellence that culminated in the school’s first national title in 26 years.

He worked his way up within the Wolverines’ staff and filled in as interim coach for four games during the 2023 championship season while Harbaugh served two&nbsp;suspensions&nbsp;for potential NCAA rules violations.

Moore also served a one-game suspension&nbsp;during that year related to a recruiting infractions NCAA case.

Earlier in the 2023 season,&nbsp;Michigan State&nbsp;fired coach Mel Tucker for cause after he engaged in what he described as consensual phone sex with an activist and rape survivor. In 2012, Arkansas fired coach Bobby Petrino due to a sordid scandal that involved a motorcycle crash, an affair with a woman who worked for him and being untruthful to his bosses.

The 20th ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team saw a double-digit road lead get away Tuesday night in Goodland, building a 15-point cushion midway through the second half before falling in the waning seconds 74–71 to Fort Hays Tech Northwest inside the Max L. Jones Fieldhouse.

Leading 39–34 at the break, the Cougars came out of the locker room hot, using a flurry of layups, a dunk and free throws to push the margin to 56–41 with 12:57 to play. Barton still led 63–55 with just over seven minutes remaining and 70–64 at the 3:02 mark, but foul trouble and turnovers shifted momentum. Two starters –&nbsp;Aris Rodriguez&nbsp;and&nbsp;Sebastian Muchitsch&nbsp;– fouled out during the closing stretch, and Fort Hays Tech Northwest capitalized with a 10–1 run over the final three minutes, stringing together a three-pointer, an And-1 within its pair of late layups and clutch free throws to steal its second straight home win of the series.

The loss drops Barton to 4–3 in Jayhawk Conference play and 9–4 overall, while Fort Hays Tech Northwest improves to 2–4 in league and 6–5 on the season.

Already recognized as a United Soccer Coaches All-America performer, Tsuji becomes the program's 24th NJCAA All-America honoree in its twenty-five years of existence and marks Head Coach Rafael Simmons' third NJCAA All-America performer in the last three seasons.

Masaki Tsuji&nbsp;– 3rd Team NJCAA All-America: The freshman forward from Tokyo, Japan, compiled an outstanding debut season by finishing with the fourth-most goals in the NJCAA Division I ranks (16) and adding five assists accumulating the seventh-highest point total nationally (37).

A first team All-KJCCC/Region 6 selection, Tsuji established himself as one of the region's most dangerous attacking threats, producing six multi-point matches and registering at least one point in 10 of 17 of his regular season contests while converting both of his penalty attempts.

Tsuji also collected three KJCCC and two NJCAA Player of the Week honors during the regular season before adding a pair of goals in postseason play—capping the District semifinal win over Crowder and scoring again in Barton's national tournament finale against Daytona State—earning All-Tournament honors finishing his campaign among the program's top 15 all-time in single-season goals and points.

Haggerty made 11 of 14 shots with just one miss from beyond the arc for the Wildcats (6-4), who improved to 5-2 at home.

David Castillo came off the bench to hit 5 of 8 from 3-point range, scoring 19 for K-State. Abdi Bashir Jr. scored 15 on 5-for-10 shooting from distance as the Wildcats hot 53% from outside the arc. Nate Johnson had two 3s and scored 14, adding six assists and five steals.

Haggerty scored seven in a game-opening 25-9 run by K-State. He had 15 points by halftime as the Wildcats opened up a 55-21 lead.

K-State shot just under 60% from the floor in the first half. The Wildcats made 6 of 13 from distance and 11 of 14 free throws. Mississippi Valley State missed 25 of 31 shots, including all six of its 3-pointers.

The Barton Community College wrestling team resumed its fall portion of the schedule Sunday at the annual FHSU Bob Smith Open, competing inside Gross Memorial Coliseum in Hays, Kansas. Making their first appearance since the Thanksgiving break, the Cougars were led by sophomore&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2025-26/bios/hill_s-ron_9d3d">S'Ron Hill</a>, who battled through a deep 184-pound bracket to earn a 3rd-place finish behind a strong 4-1 performance.

As a group, Barton totaled a 15-33 overall mark on the afternoon, as nine Cougars recorded at least one victory on the mats and three delivered multi-win performances.

Hill opened his run with a bye before rolling to a 20-4 tech fall over Otero's Jordan Harris, later adding a 9-2 quarterfinal decision against Colorado State University-Pueblo's RJ Didrickson to reach the semifinals. After dropping a tight 4-0 bout to eventual runner-up Timber Parlin of Colorado School of Mines, Hill rebounded in emphatic fashion making short work of Fort Hays State's Cameron Shultz in 26 seconds in the consolation semifinals and securing third place with a 13-10 victory over Colorado Mesa's Logan Noble.

At 133 pounds, freshman&nbsp;Shane Todd&nbsp;produced Barton's next best showing with a 3-2 afternoon. Following an opening-round setback, Todd strung together three straight consolation victories, highlighted by a 16-0 tech fall, a 13-5 major decision, and a 2:17 fall before bowing out in the Consolation Round 5 to Nebraska-Kearney's Brenyn Delano.

Freshman&nbsp;Clayton Considine&nbsp;added Barton's third multi-win effort, turning in a 2-2 day at 141 pounds. Considine notched back-to-back falls in the consolation side, pinning Colorado State's Tristan Spiegler in 1:13 and Fort Hays State's Tacoma Augustine in 6:19 before bowing out in the Consolation Round 3.

Additional Barton victories came from&nbsp;Jamal Garrett&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;Kike Yanez&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;Julian Orrantia&nbsp;(125),&nbsp;Joshua "AJ" Almanza&nbsp;(133),&nbsp;Brennen Pfannenstiel&nbsp;(149), and&nbsp;Isaac Fall&nbsp;(157). Garrett (2:26), Yanez (4:06), Pfannenstiel (6:15), and Fall (1:58) each delivered wins by fall, while Orrantia secured a high-scoring 14-12 decision, and Almanza added a 14-7 consolation victory.

Barton will close out the semester next Sunday, hosting the third annual Cougar Open at Great Bend High School's PAC Center, with action scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m.

Hill's 3rd place finish leads Barton Wrestling at FHSU Bob Smith Open

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The injury-riddled Kansas City Chiefs lost left tackle Wanya Morris to a left knee injury on the first play against the Houston Texans on Sunday night, leaving their makeshift offensive line with three backups and rookie Esa Pole protecting Patrick Mahomes' blind side.

Not exactly an ideal situation against Danielle Hunter, Will Anderson Jr. and one of the best pass rushes in the NFL.

The patchwork bunch managed to turn in a respectable effort against Houston, but the Chiefs offense nevertheless struggled to get anything going against the league's top-ranked defense. Patrick Mahomes threw three interceptions, the Chiefs were stopped twice on fourth down in the fourth quarter, and Houston walked away with&nbsp;a 20-10 victory&nbsp;inside Arrowhead Stadium.

“I was proud of the guys for the effort they put in,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “These guys take responsibility for things. You know, you keep going. But we put everything into these games, every game, so when you lose, you should be upset. And that's why you try to enjoy the wins when you have an opportunity. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into it.”

The Chiefs also lost former All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie to a knee injury in the first quarter, when he jumped high to try to knock a pass away from Nico Collins. Not only did McDuffie get hurt, the big wide receiver hauled in the 46-yard reception.

But it was on offense where the injuries really hurt the Chiefs.

Earlier this week, they put first-round draft pick and starting left tackle Josh Simmons went on injured reserve following surgery to repair a fractured and dislocated wrist. Then, right tackle Jawaan Taylor was ruled out with a triceps injury and standout right guard Trey Smith with an ankle injury, making it three starters out even before kickoff.

The Chiefs opted to put primary backup Jaylon Moore at right tackle and Morris on the left side, with Mike Caliendo getting the start in Smith's place. So when Morris went down, the Chiefs had to count on Pole — their de factor fourth-string offensive tackle.

Pole played two seasons at a California junior college and two at Washington State. He went undrafted in April and signed with the Chiefs the following month. He also had a stint with the Jets before returning to Kansas City in late October.

“I mean, you just got next man up,” said Mahomes, who finished with just 160 yards passing and the three picks. “Obviously not where you want to be, but Esa played his tail off, for a guy that had to get activated and be on the roster and go against one of the best pass rushes in the league. He gave me time to throw the ball downfield in some big situations.”

The Chiefs just didn't connect on enough of them. Or make enough plays when they mattered the most.

“We've been close all season. At the end of the day, you have to go out there and make it happen,” Mahomes said. “We've got the talent. We got the heart. But we have to go out there and execute. And until we prove it, we're going to come out with losses.”

Chiefs' offensive line woes deepen as Wanya Morris exits with knee injury against Texans

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Houston Texans never made their trip to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night into anything more than their next game.

Didn't matter that the Kansas City Chiefs had been the AFC's bully for the better part of a decade. Or the Chiefs had knocked Houston out of the playoffs last year. Or that the Texans needed to win to keep pace with Jacksonville in the AFC South.

“It was our next game,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “We needed to come out and execute. Play good football. And we did.”

C.J Stroud threw for 203 yards and a touchdown, the Texans leaned on the NFL's top-ranked defense to shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and Houston walked out with a 20-10 victory that gave a big boost to their postseason hopes.

Nico Collins contributed four catches for 121 yards, and Dare Ogunbowale added a go-ahead touchdown run in the fourth quarter, as the Texans (8-5) won their fifth straight overall and remained a game back of the Jaguars in a tight division race.

“We did what we came to do,” Ryans said. “It was just about accomplishing your mission. It wasn't anything extra on top for winning this game. We just knew we had to get the win no matter what it took.”

Mahomes, operating behind an ailing offensive line, was 14 of 33 for 160 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. The last of the picks came late in the fourth quarter, when Kansas City was trailing by a touchdown and trying to get the game to overtime.

“I thought our defense did a great job sticking in coverage, and relentlessly rushing," Stroud said. "An amazing job.”

While the win gave a big boost to Houston's playoff chances, whether it be a division title or wild-card spot, it dealt a crippling blow to the defending AFC champs. Kansas City dropped to 6-7, its worst record through 13 games since a 2-11 start to the 2012 season.

“You're getting late in the season. You're not going to get these opportunities back,” Mahomes said. “That's a good football team, but we had chances and we didn't execute at the right time to win it.”

The Chiefs had won five straight against the Texans, including that divisional playoff matchup last January on their way to another Super Bowl appearance. But they were two different teams entirely when they returned for the rematch Sunday night.

The streaking Texans were trying to keep their momentum going, and perhaps join a rare club of teams that includes Houston's 2018 version that started 0-3 and made the playoffs. And the once-dominant Chiefs were simply trying to stay in the postseason fight amid a dismal season marked by injuries, underwhelming performances and too many mistakes across the board.

The first half turned into a microcosm of all of it.

Stroud, who played so well against Indianapolis last week in his return from a concussion, connected with Collins for a 46-yard gain that set up Ka'imi Fairbairn's field goal and a 53-yard catch that led to a short touchdown toss to Woody Marks.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs sustained&nbsp;two more significant injuries, this time to left tackle Wanya Morris and cornerback Trent McDuffie, leaving them without their best defensive back and Mahomes working with an offensive line consisting of three backups.

“Listen, they battled,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said afterward. “Some of the guys in there hadn't practiced much.”

Still, the Chiefs wound up with just 98 first-half yards, and they trailed 10-0 at the break. It was only the fourth time with Mahomes at quarterback and the second time in the regular season that the Chiefs had been shut out in the first half.

The Chiefs' defense held its own, though, forcing Stroud into eight consecutive incompletions to start the second half. It allowed Mahomes and the offense to pick away at their deficit, first on Kareem Hunt's TD run and then on Harrison Butker's tying field goal.

Ultimately, the game hinged on two fourth-down decisions in the fourth quarter.

With the score still 10-10, the Texans had fourth-and-1 at their own 35 and punted. The Chiefs were then held to fourth-and-1 at their own 31, chose to go for it, and watched Mahomes throw incomplete with just over 10 minutes remaining.

(AP) — The Houston Texans never made their trip to Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night into anything more than their next game.Didn't matter that the Kansas City Chiefs had been the AFC's bully for the better part of a decade. Or the Chiefs had knocked Houston out of the playoffs last year. Or that the Texans needed to win to keep pace with Jacksonville in the AFC South.“It was our next game,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “We needed to come out and execute. Play good football. And we did.”Did enough, anyway.C.J Stroud threw for 203 yards and a touchdown, the Texans leaned on the NFL's top-ranked defense to shut down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, and Houston walked out with a 20-10 victory that gave a big boost to their postseason hopes.Nico Collins contributed four catches for 121 yards, and Dare Ogunbowale added a go-ahead touchdown run in the fourth quarter, as the Texans (8-5) won their fifth straight overall and remained a game back of the Jaguars in a tight division race.“We did what we came to do,” Ryans said. “It was just about accomplishing your mission. It wasn't anything extra on top for winning this game. We just knew we had to get the win no matter what it took.”Mahomes, operating behind an ailing offensive line, was 14 of 33 for 160 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. The last of the picks came late in the fourth quarter, when Kansas City was trailing by a touchdown and trying to get the game to overtime.“I thought our defense did a great job sticking in coverage, and relentlessly rushing," Stroud said. "An amazing job.”While the win gave a big boost to Houston's playoff chances, whether it be a division title or wild-card spot, it dealt a crippling blow to the defending AFC champs. Kansas City dropped to 6-7, its worst record through 13 games since a 2-11 start to the 2012 season.“You're getting late in the season. You're not going to get these opportunities back,” Mahomes said. “That's a good football team, but we had chances and we didn't execute at the right time to win it.”The Chiefs had won five straight against the Texans, including that divisional playoff matchup last January on their way to another Super Bowl appearance. But they were two different teams entirely when they returned for the rematch Sunday night.The streaking Texans were trying to keep their momentum going, and perhaps join a rare club of teams that includes Houston's 2018 version that started 0-3 and made the playoffs. And the once-dominant Chiefs were simply trying to stay in the postseason fight amid a dismal season marked by injuries, underwhelming performances and too many mistakes across the board.The first half turned into a microcosm of all of it.Stroud, who played so well against Indianapolis last week in his return from a concussion, connected with Collins for a 46-yard gain that set up Ka'imi Fairbairn's field goal and a 53-yard catch that led to a short touchdown toss to Woody Marks.Meanwhile, the Chiefs sustained&nbsp;two more significant injuries, this time to left tackle Wanya Morris and cornerback Trent McDuffie, leaving them without their best defensive back and Mahomes working with an offensive line consisting of three backups.“Listen, they battled,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said afterward. “Some of the guys in there hadn't practiced much.”Still, the Chiefs wound up with just 98 first-half yards, and they trailed 10-0 at the break. It was only the fourth time with Mahomes at quarterback and the second time in the regular season that the Chiefs had been shut out in the first half.The Chiefs' defense held its own, though, forcing Stroud into eight consecutive incompletions to start the second half. It allowed Mahomes and the offense to pick away at their deficit, first on Kareem Hunt's TD run and then on Harrison Butker's tying field goal.Ultimately, the game hinged on two fourth-down decisions in the fourth quarter.With the score still 10-10, the Texans had fourth-and-1 at their own 35 and punted. The Chiefs were then held to fourth-and-1 at their own 31, chose to go for it, and watched Mahomes throw incomplete with just over 10 minutes remaining.Six plays later, Ogunbowale plowed into the end zone from 5 yards out to give Houston the lead again.The Chiefs failed on fourth down again moments later, when Rashee Rice dropped a wide-open pass that would have produced a first down. And after Kansas City got the ball back one last time, Mahomes was picked off to end any hope of a comeback.“We've still got an opportunity. Even though it's a slim opportunity, we have an opportunity,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said. “For us, the door is still open. It might be a 10 percent chance. It might be a 5 percent chance. But as long as we have an opportunity and a chance, we can control that, and let the cards fall where they fall.”<h2>Injuries</h2>Texans: RB Nick Chubb (ribs) left in the first half and did not return.Chiefs: RG Trey Smith (ankle) and RT Jawaan Taylor (triceps) were inactive. Morris (knee) and CB McDuffie (knee) got hurt in the first half, leaving Kansas City with a patchwork offensive line and without its best defensive back.<h2>Up next</h2>Houston plays the Cardinals next Sunday.Kansas City plays the Chargers the same day.
