(AP) — Jaxson Dart connected with Isaiah Likely for two touchdowns and Devin Singletary on another, Cam Skattebo ran for one in his first game back from injury and the New York Giants opened the season by beating the Dallas Cowboys 28-20 in John Harbaugh’s debut as coach. Dart made one smart throw after another, mixing in a series of well-timed runs to keep the defense off balance. The Cowboys committed a series of costly penalties, and Dak Prescott threw an interception that contributed to New York scoring before halftime.
Los Angeles Rams star Myles Garrett is expected to miss at least four games because of a knee injury that requires arthroscopic surgery, according to a person with knowledge of the edge rusher’s status. The person, speaking to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, says the Rams will place Garrett on injured reserve. The two-time AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year was ineffective in the Rams’ 27-7 loss to San Francisco in Australia on Thursday night. Garrett will be eligible to return in Week 6.

With Djokovic dropping from No. 5 to No. 12 when the latest rankings were released on Monday it’s the first time since October 2002 that neither him, Federer nor Nadal appear in the top 10. The 39-year-old Djokovic was beaten in the first round of the U.S. Open.
NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev won his second major championship and kept American men without a Grand Slam title since 2003, beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday in the U.S. Open final. Zverev finally broke through in the majors by winning this year’s French Open and followed up by adding the title in New York that he so painfully let slip away in 2020. The No. 1 seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, he capitalized on Shelton’s shaky start in his first major final. Shelton was trying to win the first title by an American man since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows.
After knocking off top-ranked Ohio State, Texas is the new No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll. Ohio State dropped out of the top five for the first time in two seasons. Oregon dropped 15 spots to No. 21 after losing at Oklahoma State. Michigan has returned to the poll at No. 19 following a win over Oklahoma, which fell to No. 24. Georgia and Notre Dame held their places at No. 2 and No. 3. Indiana and Miami moved up to No. 4 and No. 5, respectively.
BERLIN (AP) — Breanna Stewart scored 22 points, Jackie Young added 18 and the U.S. beat France 97-79 to win its fifth consecutive women’s FIBA World Cup championship. The victory extended the Americans' streak to 36 straight World Cup wins, dating to the semifinals of the 2006 World Cup, where they lost to Russia. Despite the final score, this one wasn’t easy as the Americans trailed by 14 points in the first half. But the U.S. improved to 9-0 in gold-medal games since finishing second in 1983 to the Soviet Union. Dominique Malonga scored 21 points and Gabby Williams added 20 for France.
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has decided not to fight the NBA's punishment for salary cap circumvention. The league suspended Ballmer for a year, fined the team $30 million, and took away five first-round draft picks. Ballmer says the team has paid the fine and wants to move forward. He apologized to fans, employees, and fellow owners for the distraction caused by the investigation. The NBA found the team violated rules involving Kawhi Leonard. Despite initial defiance, Ballmer now says the team is committed to moving past the issue and focusing on the future.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson said last month that winning the Super Bowl isn’t enough for him. He wants to have the highest-scoring offense in NFL history. If the Bears can put together more weeks like their opener, that goal will be within reach. Chicago scored eight touchdowns in a 59-37 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. It was the most points in a season opener in the Bears’ long, proud history and tied for the second-most points by a team in Week 1, behind only the 1973 Falcons, who put up 62 on the Saints.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kyler Murray took a hit to the head at the end of the run and had to be pulled from the game in the first quarter of his debut with the team. Murray was placed in the concussion protocol for evaluation and announced by the Vikings as out for the rest of the game against the Green Bay Packers. Murray took off on a third-and-7 play from the Minnesota 33 and had his helmet knocked off by the shoulder of Packers cornerback Javon Bullard. The hit drew an unnecessary roughness penalty. Carson Wentz took over for Murray.
HOUSTON (AP) — Josh Allen threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Palmer with 1:36 remaining to lift the Buffalo Bills to a 36-31 win over the Houston Texans in a back-and-forth season opener. Allen had 334 yards passing with two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to get his first win in Houston after losing his previous four games at Reliant Stadium. The Texans led 31-30 when Allen split two defenders to find Palmer. The 2-point conversion failed. The Texans had a chance to win in the closing seconds, but Greg Rousseau had his second strip sack of the day, taking down C.J. Stroud at the Buffalo 28.
