The heat in Central Kansas has drawn several headlines, as several weeks into the school year, the temps still regularly dip into the triple digits. That’s affected several high school athletics teams this year, with football teams having to move practice and kickoff times, and some outdoor sports having to practice in indoor settings. Cross Country has also been affected, as runners are having to take extra steps to stay safely cool and hydrated.
There’s good news in that though, says Great Bend Cross Country head coach Lyles Lashlee. He says the beautiful part of it is that while it’s hot for the team, it’s hot for everyone else too.
"The beautiful thing is, everyone is dealing with the same elements. I think if you're mentally tough it helps you. So I like say we're hopefully more mentally tough than quite a few of the teams. Definitely not more than ALL the teams, but they're getting there, as far as that goes. But that's the beautiful thing. It's nice that everyone has the same elements.
Great Bend Cross Country is going across state lines this week, as they had to Joplin, Missouri for their next competition this weekend.
