The Barton Community College women's golf team continued its torrid start to the season, firing back-to-back program records enroute to a runaway victory at the Bethel Fall Invitational held the past two days at the Hesston Golf Course.

The Cougars followed a 302 opening round with a school-record 292 (16-over) on Tuesday, producing a new two-round program best 594 (42-over) to capture their fourth straight win. The single and tournament records surpassed the program's best scores of 297 and 599 set by the squad two weeks ago at the Central Kansas Classic but remains second to both in regards to finishing over par.

Well behind Barton by 124 strokes was Central Christian College's 718 with Bethel College finishing third at 791 as Bethany College did not post a team score in rounding out the field.

Individually,&nbsp;Diana Alvarado&nbsp;secured her second medalist honor of the fall, following an opening 74 by matching her career-best 69 score in Tuesday's final round to finish with a 5-over 143.

Six strokes back in the runner-up position of the 25-entry field, last week's Central Plains champion&nbsp;Chomchanok Laparojkit&nbsp;posted an opening 78 card before setting her new collegiate best 71 score in accumulating an 11-over 149.

Also making a day two improvement,&nbsp;Panalee Prachavittayagon&nbsp;finished just a stroke behind in third pairing 76 and 74 rounds for a 12-over 150.

Suri Rocha Orozco&nbsp;grabbed the next spot at 14-over 152 behind 74 and 78 cards securing Barton's sweep of the top-four placings.

Giovanna Tabanag&nbsp;posted rounds of 83-79 to place sixth at 24-over 162 leading a log jam of Cougars finishing inside the top ten.&nbsp;Alexandria Hunt&nbsp;was two strokes back in 7th at 26-over 164 on an 84 and collegiate best 80 card,&nbsp;Kadynce Nash&nbsp;another two strokes tying for 8th at 28-over 166 in matching her best 82 round followed by an 84, and&nbsp;Alexandria Baxter&nbsp;rounding out the entries in 10th at 31-over 169 despite following her collegiate best 79 with a stumble round of 90 Tuesday morning.

Barton will look to keep its perfect start rolling in two weeks competing at the Falcon Cup Classic, October 13-14 at Auburn Hills Golf Course in Wichita.

Barton women's golf resets program records again, dominates Bethel Fall Invitational for fourth consecutive title

The Barton Community College men's golf team turned in another strong historical performance, finishing third overall at the Bethel Fall Invitational held the past two days at Hesston's Golf Course.

The Cougars compiled a 20-over 876, posting solid consistent rounds of 280, 286, and 282 for the second-best 54-hole accumulation in program history, trailing just the 2022-23 squad's achievement at the 2022 Carmichael Cup.

Sterling College captured the team crown at 14-over (866), with Bethany College overtaking Barton on the final round to finish one stroke ahead at 19-over (875). Ottawa University was eleven strokes behind the Cougars in fourth at 31-over (859) followed by Tabor College rounding out the top-five of the nine team event well back at +66 (894).

Ted Gemzell&nbsp;picked up his first collegiate victory by tying for the medalist honors of the 54-man field at 1-under 206. Powered by twelve total birdies, the sophomore opened a collegiate best 4-under 65, a 1-over 70 in the afternoon trip around the course before closing with a 7-over 71 Tuesday morning in being caught by Sterling's Tobias Tajet' final round 67 forcing the tie.

Matteu Cauvin-Piacentini&nbsp;hung around all three rounds in finishing just a shot back at even-par 207. As Gemzell led the Par 4s at 4-under, Cauvin-Piacentini mastered the Par 3s at 3-under leading to rounds of 68-69-70.

Phattarapol Ongla&nbsp;tied for 16th at 4-over, 217 (+4) in following a pair of 74s with a 69. One stroke behind at 5-over 218 was&nbsp;Talon Reynolds' consistent 73-73-72 rounds while&nbsp;Wintakorn Suwanmuang&nbsp;rounded out the team scoring in a tie for 26th at 11-over 224 on a 74 and pair of 75 cards.

Barton also received strong play from its individual entries,&nbsp;Landon Timmermeyer&nbsp;tying for 13th at 2-over 215 (+2) behind twin 71 cards around a 73,&nbsp;Kobey Jackson&nbsp;posting 72 and 70 day one cards before sliding to a tie for 18th on a 77 in finishing at 6-over 219, and&nbsp;Tyler Hinton's collegiate debut producing a 77 round before twin 74s moved into into a 28th place tie at 12-over 225.

Next up for the Cougars is the Falcon Cup Classic taking place October 13-14 at Wichita's Auburn Hills Golf Course.

Barton men's golf shoots program second best total, Gemzell's shared crown leads Cougars' third placing at Bethel Invitational

The Barton Community College swimming teams opened the 2025-26 season Saturday at the Sam Freas Invitational in Edmond, Oklahoma, with the men finishing sixth and the women placing eight.

Over the weekend, the Cougars combined for six program record impacts, highlighted by freshman&nbsp;Caio Ribeiro's pair of titles and school records in his collegiate debut.

Men's Recap: C. Ribeiro made an immediate splash as a Cougar, sweeping victories in the middle-distance freestyle events while setting two program records. The Brazil native opened his day by topping the 30-participant 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.84 before returning to claim the 500-yard freestyle crown in 4:36.47.

Beyond C. Ribeiro's double titles, the Barton men notched five other individual top 10 finishes. Freshmen&nbsp;Ricardo Marques&nbsp;and&nbsp;Javier Vargas Hidalgo&nbsp;each recorded a pair in their Barton debuts. Marques placed fifth in the 100-butterfly (52.38) and seventh in the 50 freestyle (22.10), narrowly edging teammate&nbsp;Cameron Sein's 10th place 22.32. Vargas Hidalgo earned eighth in the 100 freestyle (48.74) and added ninth in the 100 IM (56.94).

The relay squads contributed two more highlights. The 200 medley four pack of&nbsp;Mateo Wallet, Sein, Marques and&nbsp;Joao Ribeiro&nbsp;posted the ninth quickest time in program history at 1:40.94, while the 400-freestyle relay of Vargas Hidalgo, J. Ribeiro, Wallet and C. Ribeiro touched in 3:12.05 for the seventh quickest mark on Barton's all-time list.

Skyler Fair&nbsp;kicked his sophomore season off strong adding to the performances with a pair of personal bests, clocking 54.84 in the 100 freestyle and 1:01.34 in the 100 butterfly.

Women's Recap: The Cougar women produced a pair of program top 10 performances, both in relay action. The 200-medley relay of&nbsp;Avery Stewart,&nbsp;Katy Alvarez,&nbsp;Makayla Baxter&nbsp;and&nbsp;Jocelyn Hamilton&nbsp;finished 24th overall with a time of 2:16.35, eighth-best in school history. The quartet returned for the 400-freestyle relay, stopping the clock at 4:35.03 for another eighth-fastest mark and 24th place finish.

Individually, Baxter led the group with Barton's top finish, placing 17th in the 500 freestyle at 6:36.41. Alvarez added a 19th-place showing in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.49), while Stewart wrapped up her collegiate debut with 28th-place swims in both the 50 freestyle (27.61) and 100 freestyle (1:02.45).

In the midst of a three-weekend stretch, Barton will remain in-state Friday, October 3, competing in the Sunflower Showdown at the University of Kansas' Robinson Natatorium in Lawrence.

Ribeiro leads Barton swimming with record breaking debut at Sam Freas Invitational

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit two home runs for the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 1 of their NL Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. Ohtani's first homer was a leadoff shot in the first inning. His second, a two-run drive in the sixth, extended the lead to 8-0. NEW YORK (AP) — Garrett Crochet led the Boston Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees in their AL Wild Card Series opener. He threw 117 pitches, the most in a postseason game in six years, striking out 11 batters and walking none over 7 2/3 innings. Crochet retired 17 consecutive batters after Anthony Volpe's homer in the second. Acquired from the Chicago White Sox in December, Crochet has become Boston's ace, earning a $170 million contract starting next year. KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Xavier Worthy admitted that he was winded after hauling in a 37-yard pass during&nbsp;the Kansas City Chiefs' emphatic 37-20 victory&nbsp;over the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

It wasn't a total surprise, considering the fleet-footed wide receiver had been sidelined with a shoulder injury ever since he ran into Travis Kelce in a Week 1 loss to the Chargers.

“I've got to get in game shape,” Worthy said with a smile.

Turns out an out-of-shape Worthy is still plenty quick. And still capable of providing a boost to a struggling Kansas City offense.

Worthy finished with five catches for a game-high 83 yards receiving, and he added a 35-yard run on a jet sweep. But the mere threat of him beating defenses over the top also played a big part in a big day for Patrick Mahomes, who threw for 270 yards and had touchdown passes to four different receivers in a win that the Chiefs desperately needed.

Rather than a 1-3 hole, they are sitting at 2-2 with some positive momentum headed to Jacksonville next Monday night.

“He's just so explosive,” Mahomes said of Worthy, “and you just see it. You get the football in his hands and the defense had to adjust, and when they adjust and he gets so much attention on him, other guys can make things happen.”

The Chiefs struggled to move the ball once Worthy got hurt in their loss in Brazil. They still had a tough time in a loss to the Eagles in a Super Bowl rematch the next week.

And even though they did some good things on defense in the second half a week ago against the Giants, they still lacked the big-play pop that has become a hallmark of Andy Reid teams over the years.

“Just as a whole group out there with Xavier, it felt good. I mean, it felt like, you know, what we're capable of,” said Chiefs wide receiver Marquise Brown, who caught one of Mahomes' TD passes. “Getting everybody together is big time for us.”

They don't have everyone together quite yet; Rashee Rice is still serving a six-game suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy. But he only has two games remaining until he can get back on the field, and then the Chiefs finally might be able to showcase the offense that they have spent most of the past two seasons envisioning.

The Chiefs have been trying to push the ball downfield more in the passing game, as they did in the days of Tyreek Hill. The return of Worthy and the emergence of speedy Tyquan Thornton gives them the athleticism to do it.

“I had injuries before but you would never know it. I always played through it,” Worthy said. “It's been super tough watching. I never missed a football game in my life. That had been my first time ever sitting on the sideline watching games.”

The Chiefs were just 5 of 15 on third down against Baltimore, even worse than their middling 39% mark for the season.

Brashard Smith, a seventh-round pick, had four carries for 9 yards and three catches for 27 yards against the Ravens. The Chiefs have been trying to get him more involved in the offense because of his speed.

“We've been trying to increase his playing time. He has a lot of talent,” Reid said. “We're working him into different spots. We were able to get (Jalen) Royals in, too, a couple of rookies. ... We're just giving them a little at a time."

Harrison Butker, the NFL's highest-paid kicker, has missed a kick in every game this season, including a 53-yarder late in the first half against Baltimore. It was his second field-goal miss to go with a pair of missed PATs through the first four games.

The Chiefs came through the game against Baltimore without any new injuries.

250 — Mahomes reached that milestone for touchdown throws, becoming the youngest to do it at 30 years, 11 days old.

The Chiefs visit the Jaguars on Monday night.

The Los Angeles Clippers superstar spoke Monday for the first time publicly on the matter at the team’s media day after a report earlier this month alleged the team violated the league's salary cap rules involving a $28 million endorsement contract between Leonard and the now-bankrupt California-based sustainability services company called Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC. The league has hired an outside firm to run its investigation.

He went 101-61 and won the AL Manager of the Year award as a rookie in 2019.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs are getting healthier, deeper and more dynamic as the season presses on.

The Baltimore Ravens? Pretty much the opposite of all of that.

Patrick Mahomes threw for 270 yards and four touchdowns in a turn-back-the-clock kind of performance, and the Chiefs jumped on a Ravens team&nbsp;missing seven defensive starters&nbsp;by the end — to say nothing of quarterback Lamar Jackson, who had to leave with a hamstring injury — for a 37-20 victory in a matchup of AFC behemoths desperate for a win.

Four different players caught TD passes for the Chiefs, while Xavier Worthy returned from a shoulder injury to catch five passes for 83 yards, igniting a Kansas City offense that had been struggling to find its footing through the first three weeks.

“We've been making little mistakes here and there and that causes frustration,” Mahomes said, “but we've been learning from them. I've been proud of the guys for the way they've responded, getting better every week.”

The Chiefs (2-2) built a 20-10 halftime lead against Baltimore before cruising to their seventh win in the past eight meetings. The most recent time the Ravens (1-3) beat them was September 2021, and their previous win in Kansas City was on Oct. 7, 2021.

Jackson threw for 147 yards with a touchdown and his first interception of the season before hurting his hamstring midway through the third quarter, though by that point the game was mostly decided. Cooper Rush played the rest of the way for the Ravens, who suddenly find themselves in a dire situation just four weeks into the season.

Only five teams in the 14-team playoff era have started 1-3 and made the postseason.

“I'm concerned but I'm not overwhelmed by it. Three losses to probably three of the top teams in the league,” said Ravens coach John Harbaugh, who explained that Jackson sustained a strain to his hamstring and will be evaluated further on Monday.

“We've got to win the next game, and then once you win the next game, then you have a chance to start stacking some wins."

Derrick Henry finished with just eight carries for 42 yards. Justice Hill had a late 71-yard touchdown run. Otherwise, the Chiefs shut down a Baltimore offense that had scored an NFL-best 111 points over the first three weeks.

“It was a big step forward for us,” said Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones, who flew back from&nbsp;a family funeral in Mississippi&nbsp;on Sunday, and whose police escort got him to Arrowhead Stadium with about 20 minutes left before kickoff.

While the Chiefs were getting healthier with the return of Worthy, the Ravens defense — already decimated by injuries — thinned even more when linebacker Roquan Smith, Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins got hurt. That left the Ravens without seven defensive starters — among them two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike and pass rusher Broderick Washington Jr., who went on injured reserve Saturday — by the early minutes of the fourth quarter.

“It's part of the game,” Hill said of the injuries. “I mean, not everything would be sunshine and rainbows. Last year we started off slow and (made the) playoffs and went deep. So I don't think it's difficult. We just know what we need to do going forward to be in the place we want to be. It just kind of shows you the character of the team.”

Still, the Chiefs took advantage of a team that was wounded.

Their own offense had been inconsistent through the first three weeks but scored on its first four possessions on Sunday. Harrison Butker knocked through a pair of field goals, then Mahomes hit JuJu Smith-Schuster with a short TD throw and Isiah Pacheco with another touchdown pass to give Kansas City a 20-7 lead late in the first half.

The Chiefs nearly made it 5 for 5 on scoring drives, but Butker missed a 56-yarder wide left. That opened the door for Baltimore to get a 43-yard field goal from Tyler Loop and make it a 10-point game at the break.

But the mounting injuries, coupled with a red-hot Kansas City offense, were far too much to overcome.

The Chiefs needed just six plays to drive 65 yards for Tyquan Thornton's touchdown reception to start the second half. And after the Ravens added Loop's second field goal, the Chiefs answered with one of their own, before Mahomes threw a nifty pass to Marquise Brown in the end zone early in the fourth quarter to put the game well out of reach.

“These two teams, I mean, the competition — you love it,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. “That's why we play this game.”

Ravens: Along with Jackson, Smith, Humphrey and Wiggins, LT Ronnie Stanley (ankle) also left the game and did not return.

Chiefs: There were no injuries for Kansas City.

Baltimore plays Houston next Sunday. Kansas City visits Jacksonville next Monday night.

Mahomes shines for Chiefs, Jackson adds to Ravens' injury woes as Kansas City rolls to 37-20 victory

KUAthletics.com LAWRENCE, Kan.&nbsp;–&nbsp;Cincinnati scored the go-ahead touchdown with 29 seconds remaining as the Bearcats defeated Kansas 37-34 in front of a sold out crowd at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium on Saturday.

The loss drops Kansas to 3-2 (1-1 Big 12) on the year, while Cincinnati improves to 3-1 (1-0 Big 12) this season.&nbsp;

Kansas quarterback&nbsp;Jalon Daniels&nbsp;completed 19-of-28 passes for 445 yards and four touchdowns. Daniels' yardage is the second-highest single-game total of his career and the fifth-best mark in program history. He completed a team high five passes to&nbsp;Emmanuel Henderson Jr.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Boden Groen, with Henderson totaling 214 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Groen and&nbsp;Levi Wentz&nbsp;also had receiving touchdowns for the Jayhawks.

Leshon Williams&nbsp;led the Jayhawks with 64 rushing yards on 10 attempts, while Daniels added 55 yards on the ground to finish with exactly 500 yards of total offense. This output marked the fourth-highest single-game total in KU history.&nbsp;Lyrik Rawls&nbsp;led the Jayhawks defensively with 10 tackles, while&nbsp;Trey Lathan&nbsp;added nine and two quarterback hurries.&nbsp;Blake Herold&nbsp;had a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and three of KU's eight hurries.

Cincinnati got one first down on their opening drive before punting and pinning KU at its own seven-yard line. The Jayhawks offense came out firing as Daniels went deep to Henderson on the first offensive play of the game, connecting for a 93-yard touchdown to go up 7-0 at the 11:42 mark of the opening quarter. The Bearcats answered, however, going 75 yards in 13 plays to tie the game at 7-7 following a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:10 to play in the quarter.

Kansas was held without a first down on its next drive and Cincinnati took their first lead of the game with a 29-yard field goal early in the second quarter. Daniels and the Jayhawks quickly responded with a nine-play scoring drive, which ended with a 27-yard&nbsp;Laith Marjan&nbsp;field goal that made it 10-10 with 10:00 remaining in the half.&nbsp;

The back and forth scoring continued as the Bearcats put together a 10-play touchdown drive, regaining the lead, 17-10, before Kansas added a 35-yard field goal from Marjan. Cincinnati added a field goal on the last play of the half to take a 20-13 lead into the break.&nbsp;KU's offense got back in the scoring column on its opening drive of the second half. KU needed just 3:22 to drive 75 yards in eight plays, capped off with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Daniels to&nbsp;Boden Groen, which tied the score at 20-20. The team's again traded touchdowns on their next drives, with UC needing five plays to cover 82 yards for a score before Daniels connected with Henderson for another one-play drive, this time covering 75 yards. The Bearcats added a field goal on their final drive of the quarter to lead 30-27 as the game entered the fourth quarter.

Kansas appeared poised to regain the lead before a fumble at the goal line led to a turnover, and allowed Cincinnati to maintain their lead. After allowing two first downs, KU's defense got the stop it needed, getting the ball back into Daniels' hands with 8:02 to play.&nbsp;

The Jayhawks senior signal caller then engineered the clutch drive, marching his team 85 yards in 12 plays while draining 6:17 off the clock. Daniels' final act of the possession was a six-yard touchdown pass to Wentz that put KU back on top with 1:45 to play in the game.

KU forced Cincinnati into a fourth and 10 on its final drive, but the Bearcats converted and scored the go-ahead touchdown three plays later.

The Jayhawks will now hit the road for the first time in Big 12 Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4, traveling to UCF to take on the Knights at 6:30 p.m. CT on ESPN2. The game will be Kansas' first game at UCF in program history and the second played in Orlando all-time (2003 Tangerine Bowl vs. NC State).

Cincinnati Scores Late, Defeats Kansas 37-34

It was a running jump — no, almost a dive — across the gray-carpeted locker room floor Saturday afternoon, this introduction to mayhem, this grand announcement that we were between chapters, as Kansas State put behind the past and would soon delve into the future, but not before enjoying the moment, because too often moments are fleeting, in life and in sports, and special moments, man, they must be cherished. And so, there was K-State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman, on his 58th&nbsp;birthday, running and jumping into the middle of the oval-shaped locker room a nano-second before K-State players, still in full uniform, mobbed him, dousing him with bottled water, as he bounced up and down and spun and pumped his fist and adjusted his purple hat, and spun some more, a smile this big rarely seen in public, yet reserved for these kinds of moments and for his players in this crazy college football universe.

Understand it had been several days since K-State had tasted victory —&nbsp;a three-point win over FCS member North Dakota sandwiched between three losses by a total of 12 points — and the Wildcats, who carried — and now still carry — high hopes for this 2025 season, were not used to defeat — not this many defeats, and certainly not like this. In recent weeks, you could see it in their eyes, this stunned gaze into nothingness, and there were feelings, yes, and they kept those bottled up, reserved only for their coaches, teammates, and perhaps families, because this hurt, man, and it hurt bad, and this trail of tears, no, it wasn't the K-State way.

Well, somewhere along the way, a switch turned after a 23-17 loss at Arizona on September 12. During the ensuing bye week, Klieman visited with 12 team captains and seasoned veteran players in the Vanier Family Football Complex. And they talked about various issues. And one of those issues was ENERGY. And ENERGY is in all caps because among the shortcomings of a squad that suffered defeat in three of its first four games, perhaps energy was lacking the most. The fire that was so ever-present all the way to the end of the season-opening 24-21 loss to No. 22 Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland, slowly and eventually reduced to smoldering coals. Klieman could see it. His assistant coaches could see it. And certainly, the players could see it. But what could be done?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

This is where Klieman, who has guided K-State to at least nine wins in each of the past three seasons, really dug in, because football is football, and Klieman, who took North Dakota State to four Division I National Championships, then took K-State to a 2022 Big 12 Championship, and who's led the Wildcats to three bowl wins in their last four appearances, knows young people, he gets young people, and one of the key commonalities among his teams is what he felt — perhaps for the first time this season — in the air on the sideline and on the field of play on Saturday was this: ENERGY.

"You know," Klieman said, "the one thing that's a non-negotiable for me is you're going to celebrate good plays and you're going to celebrate K-State football."

And so, the practices leading up to Saturday were intense, physical and spirited.

"I think we could've gotten 30 sideline warnings in practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday," Klieman said, "because that's what we emphasized — celebrate with your teammates."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

And there was ample reason for celebration on Saturday, and even before any of that, running back&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;felt the energy of the 53,013 fans in the stands — the 12th&nbsp;largest attendance in school history and the highest attendance for a game in 10 years — and he felt it among his teammates, that energy in the air.

"We went out there, and just before the game, everybody was excited to go out there," Edwards said. "It was a different type of feeling going out there. It just felt good to be out there with them today. It did."

Energy was at a season high, as was execution, and K-State beat unbeaten UCF 34-20 to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference.

"I told the guys we want to come out here and come out and have energy," junior quarterback&nbsp;Avery Johnson&nbsp;said. "Winning is fun to me. Nothing is going to be fun if you lose a game. The biggest point for us is winning games each Saturday."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

And the Wildcats did it together with passion, perhaps turning the corner and bouncing back on track along this rollercoaster ride that shifts into the month of October. At one point, Klieman and senior tight end&nbsp;Will Swanson&nbsp;collided on the field while celebrating a play. After an interception by safety&nbsp;Gunner Maldonado, the team defenders came off the bench to swarm the safety, which drew an official's flag for a sideline warning.

"We got a sideline warning, and I didn't care," Klieman said. "You know, it's fun. Celebrate this game. You only get so many opportunities to play it."

Swanson knows. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end, a native of Papillion, Nebraska, and 2024 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, arrived at K-State in 2020. He has seen plenty of ups and a few downs along the way. He knew the feeling. And the feeling returned on Saturday. And it felt good. And after the game, it made him smile.

"The No. 1 thing on my mind was the energy we had as a team on the sideline," he said. "That's what separated ourselves with how we'd been playing in the past. It's without a doubt the energy that we brought."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

How did K-State get that energy for Saturday's game?

"That's a good question," he said. "It was just going back in time, kind of, and remembering why you love football, and the power of touch. Going out there and seeing someone you love so much make a big play, you want to go hug, and give him a high-five or just tell him, 'Good job.'

"That's something we did very well over the bye week and also, it's the realization for how grateful we are to play this game. There are so many answers for that question."

K-State racked up 34 points and 434 total yards while holding UCF to 20 points —&nbsp;19 points under its season average. Johnson passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 75 rushing yards on 12 carries. Edwards had 20 carries for 166 yards and a 75-yard touchdown run down the K-State sideline that had his teammates going crazy with excitement. K-State saw wide receiver&nbsp;Jaron Tibbs&nbsp;have eight catches for 72 yards while true freshman tight end&nbsp;Linkon Cure&nbsp;and junior wide receiver&nbsp;Sterling Lockett&nbsp;both record their first catches as Wildcats. K-State had two interceptions for the first time with Maldonado and&nbsp;Qua Moss&nbsp;electrifying the team and the stadium. The Wildcats also had eight tackles for loss and three sacks, which was cause for more celebration.

"If&nbsp;Simon McClannan&nbsp;makes a great punt, make sure everybody taps Simon on the head," Klieman said. "When&nbsp;Luis Rodriguez&nbsp;makes another big-time kick, everybody go get on Luis' hat. That becomes contagious. Leadership and energy are a contact sport. It ain't, 'Good job.' Man, it's getting on guys, and that's why I almost killed myself celebrating with Swanson on a great block, because you have to show that energy, man, and if I'm showing it now as a 58-year-old, then those kids know that, man, we're celebrating great, great plays."

The question becomes this: How does energy carry over into performance?

"It's just one of those things that there's no stat for it," he said, finally. "You can't stat energy on the sideline. It's kind of the unseen. It's hard to understand, but it makes so much of a difference. When we got to the locker room after the game, you can't see it, but that's the factor that made it all different."

And it was different. And it was special. And it was a moment to hold onto. A moment to enjoy. Klieman. Water bottles. Bring it.

"The water is extremely cold," Johnson said. "If you're one of the guys messing around you might pour water all over one of your teammates and they'll jump a little bit because it's cold in there, but usually Coach Klieman takes the heat for most of the water, and everybody throws water on Coach Klieman, and they jump in the middle like you're at a concert, like it's a mosh pit at a concert.

"It's pretty cool. It's a cool way to celebrate wins."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Once the Klieman-led mosh pit died down, the singing began. Yes, the K-State players sang to their head coach, and they belted, "Happyyyy birrrrthdayyyy to youuuuu!" And Klieman, soaking wet in his purple shirt, stood in the middle of the locker room, walked a little bit, adjusted his hat, paused and looked at his players, and you could tell the newly crowned 58-year-old was letting it all sink in, the enormity of the day, and of this moment.

Just like the rest of the day, the energy of celebration, a rebirth of sorts, hung high in the air. K-State doesn't live in the past. It doesn't leap ahead into the future. No, Klieman focused on only the present when he ran and jumped into the middle of the celebratory locker room on Saturday.

And boy, did the moment, and the energy, sure feel good.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scott Fritchen KStateSports.com&nbsp; It was a running jump — no, almost a dive — across the gray-carpeted locker room floor Saturday afternoon, this introduction to mayhem, this grand announcement that we were between chapters, as Kansas State put behind the past and would soon delve into the future, but not before enjoying the moment, because too often moments are fleeting, in life and in sports, and special moments, man, they must be cherished. And so, there was K-State head coach&nbsp;Chris Klieman, on his 58th&nbsp;birthday, running and jumping into the middle of the oval-shaped locker room a nano-second before K-State players, still in full uniform, mobbed him, dousing him with bottled water, as he bounced up and down and spun and pumped his fist and adjusted his purple hat, and spun some more, a smile this big rarely seen in public, yet reserved for these kinds of moments and for his players in this crazy college football universe.Understand it had been several days since K-State had tasted victory —&nbsp;a three-point win over FCS member North Dakota sandwiched between three losses by a total of 12 points — and the Wildcats, who carried — and now still carry — high hopes for this 2025 season, were not used to defeat — not this many defeats, and certainly not like this. In recent weeks, you could see it in their eyes, this stunned gaze into nothingness, and there were feelings, yes, and they kept those bottled up, reserved only for their coaches, teammates, and perhaps families, because this hurt, man, and it hurt bad, and this trail of tears, no, it wasn't the K-State way.Well, somewhere along the way, a switch turned after a 23-17 loss at Arizona on September 12. During the ensuing bye week, Klieman visited with 12 team captains and seasoned veteran players in the Vanier Family Football Complex. And they talked about various issues. And one of those issues was ENERGY. And ENERGY is in all caps because among the shortcomings of a squad that suffered defeat in three of its first four games, perhaps energy was lacking the most. The fire that was so ever-present all the way to the end of the season-opening 24-21 loss to No. 22 Iowa State in Dublin, Ireland, slowly and eventually reduced to smoldering coals. Klieman could see it. His assistant coaches could see it. And certainly, the players could see it. But what could be done?&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; This is where Klieman, who has guided K-State to at least nine wins in each of the past three seasons, really dug in, because football is football, and Klieman, who took North Dakota State to four Division I National Championships, then took K-State to a 2022 Big 12 Championship, and who's led the Wildcats to three bowl wins in their last four appearances, knows young people, he gets young people, and one of the key commonalities among his teams is what he felt — perhaps for the first time this season — in the air on the sideline and on the field of play on Saturday was this: ENERGY."You know," Klieman said, "the one thing that's a non-negotiable for me is you're going to celebrate good plays and you're going to celebrate K-State football."And so, the practices leading up to Saturday were intense, physical and spirited."I think we could've gotten 30 sideline warnings in practice on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday," Klieman said, "because that's what we emphasized — celebrate with your teammates."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And there was ample reason for celebration on Saturday, and even before any of that, running back&nbsp;Dylan Edwards&nbsp;felt the energy of the 53,013 fans in the stands — the 12th&nbsp;largest attendance in school history and the highest attendance for a game in 10 years — and he felt it among his teammates, that energy in the air."We went out there, and just before the game, everybody was excited to go out there," Edwards said. "It was a different type of feeling going out there. It just felt good to be out there with them today. It did."Energy was at a season high, as was execution, and K-State beat unbeaten UCF 34-20 to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Big 12 Conference."I told the guys we want to come out here and come out and have energy," junior quarterback&nbsp;Avery Johnson&nbsp;said. "Winning is fun to me. Nothing is going to be fun if you lose a game. The biggest point for us is winning games each Saturday."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And the Wildcats did it together with passion, perhaps turning the corner and bouncing back on track along this rollercoaster ride that shifts into the month of October. At one point, Klieman and senior tight end&nbsp;Will Swanson&nbsp;collided on the field while celebrating a play. After an interception by safety&nbsp;Gunner Maldonado, the team defenders came off the bench to swarm the safety, which drew an official's flag for a sideline warning."We got a sideline warning, and I didn't care," Klieman said. "You know, it's fun. Celebrate this game. You only get so many opportunities to play it."Swanson knows. The 6-foot-5, 245-pound tight end, a native of Papillion, Nebraska, and 2024 All-Big 12 Honorable Mention selection, arrived at K-State in 2020. He has seen plenty of ups and a few downs along the way. He knew the feeling. And the feeling returned on Saturday. And it felt good. And after the game, it made him smile."The No. 1 thing on my mind was the energy we had as a team on the sideline," he said. "That's what separated ourselves with how we'd been playing in the past. It's without a doubt the energy that we brought."&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; How did K-State get that energy for Saturday's game?"That's a good question," he said. "It was just going back in time, kind of, and remembering why you love football, and the power of touch. Going out there and seeing someone you love so much make a big play, you want to go hug, and give him a high-five or just tell him, 'Good job.'"That's something we did very well over the bye week and also, it's the realization for how grateful we are to play this game. There are so many answers for that question."K-State racked up 34 points and 434 total yards while holding UCF to 20 points —&nbsp;19 points under its season average. Johnson passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns, and he added 75 rushing yards on 12 carries. Edwards had 20 carries for 166 yards and a 75-yard touchdown run down the K-State sideline that had his teammates going crazy with excitement. K-State saw wide receiver&nbsp;Jaron Tibbs&nbsp;have eight catches for 72 yards while true freshman tight end&nbsp;Linkon Cure&nbsp;and junior wide receiver&nbsp;Sterling Lockett&nbsp;both record their first catches as Wildcats. K-State had two interceptions for the first time with Maldonado and&nbsp;Qua Moss&nbsp;electrifying the team and the stadium. The Wildcats also had eight tackles for loss and three sacks, which was cause for more celebration."If&nbsp;Simon McClannan&nbsp;makes a great punt, make sure everybody taps Simon on the head," Klieman said. "When&nbsp;Luis Rodriguez&nbsp;makes another big-time kick, everybody go get on Luis' hat. That becomes contagious. Leadership and energy are a contact sport. It ain't, 'Good job.' Man, it's getting on guys, and that's why I almost killed myself celebrating with Swanson on a great block, because you have to show that energy, man, and if I'm showing it now as a 58-year-old, then those kids know that, man, we're celebrating great, great plays."The question becomes this: How does energy carry over into performance?Swanson took a second to ponder it."It's just one of those things that there's no stat for it," he said, finally. "You can't stat energy on the sideline. It's kind of the unseen. It's hard to understand, but it makes so much of a difference. When we got to the locker room after the game, you can't see it, but that's the factor that made it all different."And it was different. And it was special. And it was a moment to hold onto. WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Mike Yastrzemski hit two solo home runs, Cole Ragans struck out eight in 4 1/3 innings and the Kansas City Royals defeated the Athletics 9-2 on Sunday.

Yastrzemski hit a homer deep to right in the seventh inning off Michael Kelly and homered to right off Osvaldo Bido in the eighth. Yastrzemski hit 17 homers, including nine with the Royals after he was&nbsp;traded from the Giants at the deadline.

Michael Massey had four of Kansas City’s 15 hits. Catcher Carter Jensen had three, including a homer just after Yastrzemski’s seventh-inning home run.

Bobby Witt Jr. hit a two-run double in the seventh. The Kansas City shortstop led the majors in hits for the second straight year. He had 184 this season after collecting 211 in 2024.

Ragans limited the A’s to two hits and a walk. Lefty Daniel Lynch IV (6-2) got the victory. Lynch entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs in the fifth and escaped the jam by striking out Nick Kurtz.

Kurtz hit an opposite-field two-run homer off lefty Sam Long in the eighth. The Athletics’ first baseman leads all rookies in home runs (36), RBIs (86), runs (90) and walks (63).

Brady Basso (1-1), the first of seven Athletics pitchers, took the loss.

Ragans struck out four consecutive hitters over the third and fourth innings. Max Muncy, Willie MacIver, Colby Thomas and Kurtz each went down on a swinging strike three.

The three homers the A’s allowed Sunday boosted their season total to 222, a franchise record. The previous mark was 220, set by the 1964 Kansas City A’s.

Monday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

The Great Bend High School Lady Panthers tennis squad took first as a team at the Garden City Varsity Girls Tennis Invitational yesterday.

The Panthers came in first in a field of 11 teams, with strong performances in open singles from Mac Lindberg, who came in 4th, and Paige Stacey, who came in 6th.

In open doubles, the pairing of&nbsp;Brooklyn Reynolds and Baze Hogan came in 3rd, while&nbsp;Beth Hammeke and Maddie Siefkes placed 4th.

The Panthers won with a team score of 123, finishing ahead of Larned, who scored 118, and the host Buffalo's Brown team, who scored 108.&nbsp;

The 8th ranked Barton Community College volleyball team shook off a slow start Saturday afternoon, rallying for three straight set wins in a 3-1 road victory at Garden City Community College (21-25, 25-22, 25-18, 28-26).

Behind a balanced attack and efficient .348 team hitting percentage, the Cougars improved to 5-1 in conference play and 18-5 overall. Garden City slipped to 4-3 in league action and 7-9 on the year.

Barton continues its road stretch on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. conference tilt at Cloud County Community College.

The Cougars' offense flourished with three players hitting over .400, led by&nbsp;Stasa Stamenkovic, who fueled the attack with a career-high 24 kills on .429 efficiency in recording her 14th double-figure kill performance of the season. Fellow freshman outside hitter&nbsp;Caroliny Cristinyadded 14 kills and nine digs, while&nbsp;Paola Batista&nbsp;chipped in five kills.

Barton's middles combined for 19 kills on .485 hitting with nine total blocks. Sophomore&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;was nearly flawless at .562 with 10 kills and five blocks, while freshman&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt&nbsp;contributed nine kills on .421 efficiency with four blocks.

Setters&nbsp;Ori Briger&nbsp;and&nbsp;Mileah Neal&nbsp;totaled 56 assists, with Briger handing out 31 along with three service aces and six digs, while Neal contributed 25 assists.

Libero&nbsp;Mina Kaneko&nbsp;again anchored the back row with 24 digs, marking her ninth match of 20 or more this season.
