The Barton Community College men's golf team improved upon its season-opening performance with a fourth-place finish Tuesday at the two-day 12th Annual Central Kansas Classic held at McPherson's Turkey Creek Golf Course.
Battling 25-mph winds throughout Monday's opening 36 holes, Barton sat fifth following an opening-round 308 before moving into a tie for fourth with a second-round 312. The Cougars held firm in Tuesday's final round, firing their tournament-best 296 to secure fourth place at 76-over 916 in the 10-team field.
Phattarapol Ongla led Barton's six-player contingent, making one of the tournament's bigger opening-day moves up the leaderboard. Sitting 26th following an opening-round 78, the sophomore vaulted 18 spots with a second-round 73 before matching the score Tuesday to earn a share of 10th among the 56-player field at 14-over 224.
Landon Timmermeyer gave the Cougars a second top-15 finisher, opening with a 75 before rounds of 79 and 73 secured a share of 14th at 17-over 227.
Kobey Jackson finished in a tie for 23rd at 24-over 234 following rounds of 77, 81 and 76, while Julien Rosain placed 28th at 26-over 236 behind rounds of 79, 79 and 78.
Antonio Vidal produced Barton's biggest final-round turnaround. Following rounds of 78 and 91 Monday, Vidal bounced back by 17 strokes Tuesday with a 74 to finish 40th at 33-over 243.
Brady Jackson opened with an 85 before withdrawing during Monday's second round.
The Cougars have nearly two weeks before returning to the links, traveling to Hesston Municipal Golf Course on Sept. 28 for the two-day Bethel Fall Invitational.
