The Big 12 hit the halfway point of this season with a pair of 6-0 teams, though neither ninth-ranked Iowa State or No. 13 BYU were considered preseason favorites in the expanded 16-team conference.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell, in his ninth season, was picked as the Big 12’s top coach for the first half of the season in a vote by 10 Associated Press writers who cover the league released Tuesday. The Cyclones are 6-0 for the first time since 1938, with a defense that allows only 11 points and 285.3 total yards a game.

BYU (6-0, 3-0 Big 12) was selected as the most surprising team. The Cougars have already surpassed their overall and conference win totals from their Big 12 debut last season, which ended with a five-game losing streak.

Oklahoma State and Kansas, two of the teams picked above them, have both lost their first three conference games. League newcomer Utah (4-2, 1-2) just fell out of the Top 25 for the first time this season,

The Cyclones and Cougars, tied with Texas Tech (5-1, 3-0) atop the Big 12 standings, don’t play each other in the regular season. Iowa State does host Texas Tech on Nov. 2.

Shedeur Sanders, Colorado. The quarterback and son of coach Deion Sanders leads the Big 12 with 336.3 yards passing per game and 17 touchdowns. He has completed 172 of 237 passes (72.6%) for 2,371 yards with four interceptions for the Buffaloes in their first season back in the league.

In Colorado’s 31-28 home loss to No. 17 Kansas State, Sanders set a school record by completing 16 passes in a row. He finished 34 of 40 for 388 yards and three touchdowns, even after two-way standout Travis Hunter and three other receivers got hurt.

Nick Martin, Oklahoma State. After his 140 total tackles and 83 solo stops in 2023 were the most for any Big 12 player since 2018, the Cowboys linebacker was having another outstanding season before a knee injury in the fourth quarter against Kansas State on Sept. 28. He had 47 tackles (28 solo) and 7 1/2 tackles for loss in the first five games. Martin is second in the Big 12 with his 9.4 tackles per game, trailing teammate Trey Rucker (11.5).

Josiah Trotter, West Virginia. The linebacker didn’t play as a true freshman a year ago after a season-ending leg injury in spring practice. The son of former NFL All-Pro LB Jeremiah Trotter Sr. and brother of Philadephia Eagles LB Jeremiah Trotter Jr. is tied for sixth in the Big 12 with 46 total tackles. He has three 10-tackle games this season.

Brendan Sorsby, Cincinnati. The quarterback transfer from Indiana is third in the Big 12 and 13th nationally with 287 yards passing per game. Sorsby has completed 133 of 201 passes (66.2%) for 1,722 yards with 13 TDs and three interceptions for the Bearcats (4-2, 2-1). He had multiple TD passes five times as a redshirt freshman with the Hoosiers last year.

Cam Skattebo, Arizona State. The bulldozing and versatile running back is third in the Big 12 with 128.8 yards rushing per game, second with his eight TDs, and first with his 7.3 yards per carry. Skattebo last season also took snaps at quarterback, lined up as a receiver and even punted. He has back-to-back 150-yard rushing games since a 100-yard receiving game.

There was a tie between Kansas (1-5) and Oklahoma State (3-3).

The Jayhawks were coming off a 9-4 season when quarterback Jalon Daniels played only three games because of a back injury. With Daniels healthy, they went into this season in the Top 25, won their opener against an FCS team and have since lost five straight games, four by a touchdown or less.

Oklahoma State, the Big 12 runner-up twice in the past three seasons, has lost two league games at home. That includes a 24-point loss to West Virginia in their last game two weeks ago. Ollie Gordon II was the nation’s leading rusher last season, but has 158 yards combined in the Cowboys’ five games against FBS opponents.

Baylor coach Dave Aranda survived a 3-9 record last year, but might not be as fortunate this season. The Bears (2-4) are 11-20 since Aranda’s second season in 2021, when they set a school record with 12 wins after a Sugar Bowl victory. Aranda, LSU’s defensive coordinator for a national title before going to Baylor, took over defensive play-calling this year. The Bears are 0-3 in the Big 12, allowing more than 38 points a game in those games.

QB Cam Rising missed Utah’s final Pac-12 season after a major knee injury during the Rose Bowl on Jan. 2, 2023. The 25-year-old and seventh-year senior quarterback injured his hand in Week 2 this season, missed three games and now is out indefinitely with a lower leg injury. He is 34-of-66 passing (51.5%) for 555 yards and seven TDs along with three interceptions.

The Barton Community College women's golf team wrapped up its fall season on Tuesday with a 7th placing at the Newman Fall Invitational held at Andover's Terradyne Country Club.

Highlighting Barton's two days of competition was the hole-in-one by&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wgolf/2024-25/bios/nash_kadynce_s9uk">Kadynce Nash</a>, utilizing a 7-iron on the 161-yard, hole No. 12 in recording just the women's program second ever ace in competition. The accomplishment adds the freshman's name alongside Leeseo Park's ace, who was also a freshman at the time, coming on hole No. 8 at Hutchinson's Carey Park Golf Course during the first round of the 2016 Region 6 Championships.

Competing against its toughest field and course of the season to date, Barton carded rounds of 346 and 353 for a 131-over 699 accumulated score.

The Cougars now enter the long off-season in resuming competition play next March.

Nash records program second ever ace, Barton women's golf wraps up fall season 

The No. 9 Lady Panther volleyball team pushed its win streak to 21 matches with a pair of victories in Smith Center Tuesday night. Now 29-2 on the season, Great Bend is currently ahead of top-ranked Topeka-Seaman as the No. 1 seed in the Class 5A West substate standings. Three teams in the west have just two losses.

Perennially-tough Smith Center had posted a&nbsp; 122-13 record over the past three seasons, including a 43-win state championship season in 2021. The Lady Red have won just nine matches this year and dropped Tuesday's contest to Great Bend 25-17, 25-6.

Lady Panther freshman Mikala Minton had the big match offensively with eight kills. Senior Kara Feist added five, and the Ellegoods - senior Cassie and freshman Micah - each finished with four. Sophomore Kya Behr finished with 22 assists. The Lady Panther blockers had one of their best showings of the season. Feist led the charge with five, followed by Micah Ellegood with four and Cassie Ellegood with three. Junior Ava Kaiser led the back row with 11 digs followed by Minton with six.

Great Bend defeated Phillipsburg 25-18, 25-16. Sophomore Alex Mayers led the attack with nine kills, followed by Cassie Ellegood with seven and Behr with six. Behr also added 23 assists to her growing career total. Micah Ellegood had four blocks and Minton paced the back row with 10 digs. Mayers and Behr each added nine digs and Kaiser finished with seven.

The Lady Panthers head to the Western Athletic Conference tournament in Garden City on Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

ATLANTA (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league is still reviewing the latest claims of sexual assault and battery against Deshaun Watson. The Cleveland Browns quarterback resolved the civil lawsuit filed against him by the woman but that doesn’t preclude him from being disciplined by the league. “We’re continuing our review like we would,” Goodell said Tuesday at the conclusion of the league’s fall meeting. “As you know, we take the personal conduct policy seriously so our people are working diligently.”&nbsp;The league, per standard procedure, has sought to interview the plaintiff through her lawyer, Tony Buzbee. Watson was suspended for the first 11 games in 2022 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy after more than two dozen women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage therapy sessions. Watson was also fined $5 million and had to undergo mandatory evaluation before he was reinstated by the league. The latest lawsuit was filed on Sept. 9 in Harris County, Texas. The unidentified woman alleged Watson had sexually assaulted her in 2020 while on a dinner date in her apartment. She was seeking damages in excess of $1 million.

With 15 consecutive state tennis titles, including the past three in Class 3-2-1A, Wichita Collegiate is almost a lock to take home one of the three state plaques each October. Ellsworth High School tennis coach Eric Anderson knows that. His squad finished fourth at last year's state tournament, just two points shy of the third-place trophy. Anderson hopes an unprecedented show of success this fall leads to a state trophy in Wichita this weekend.

"We're kind of lucky," he said. "We had a young team last year with three freshmen, two sophomores, and a junior. All of them qualified for the state meet, five of those six placed at the state meet, and all six are back this year."

 The Lady Bearcats were 101-7 in combined matches this year heading into regional action Friday and Saturday in Wakeeney. The girls posted a combined 15-2 record there to bring home a pair of regional titles and qualify all six members to state. Ellsworth more than doubled-up second-place Hoisington 22-10.

One big move from last year was switching sophomore Hannah Vague to singles and junior Felis De La Cruz to doubles. Last year, Vague teamed up with senior Elena Jundt to place 11th at state as a doubles team. This year, Vague is 28-4 as a singles player and De La Cruz and Jundt are 27-4 on the doubles side.

"We talked in the offseason, over the summer, that we really wanted to work hard at getting all six of our girls to place at the state meet so we had a chance to bring home one of them state plaques," Anderson said. "Last year, we were two points short of bringing home a third-place plaque. They really came to me and said we needed to change things up a little bit and we ran with it."

The staples are also back. Junior Inarie Rippert and sophomore Reygan Coonrod finished second at state last year and take a perfect 31-0 record to Wichita this year. Sophomore Karli Haase placed 10th at state last year and takes a 30-1 record to state this year. Anderson said the program starts with a strong foundation.

"We added junior high tennis here, which has been a great feeder program for our girls' team," he said. "They go right from the spring, right through the summer program, right into girls' tennis. It's just been awesome the last few years to see our girls progress. We have some freshmen girls this year who, in previous years, probably could have made it to our varsity team."

This group of Lady Bearcats has won 17 of its 18 varsity tournaments dating back to last year, and the girls have now won 323 matches compared to just 49 losses over the past two seasons. This year's Class 3-2-1A State Tennis Championships begin Friday in Wichita.

Ellsworth tennis team continues unprecedented success heading back to state

ATLANTA (AP) — The Super Bowl will return to Atlanta in 2028 at the home of the Falcons, following a vote of approval by NFL team owners on Tuesday at the league’s annual fall meeting.

This will be the fourth time the NFL’s championship game is played in Atlanta and the second in Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which was the site when the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Rams in 2019.

“This is a tremendous honor for the city of Atlanta and the state of Georgia to be selected as host for Super Bowl LXII,” Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank said. “Thank you to my fellow owners for their trust in awarding Atlanta this opportunity, and thank you to Commissioner Goodell, Peter O’Reilly and the entire league for their continued leadership in making the NFL the greatest sports league in the world. Mercedes-Benz Stadium was built to host the world’s largest sporting events, and I know I speak for many when I say we are honored to bring it back to Atlanta in 2028 and build off the success of Super Bowl 53 in 2019. I look forward to working alongside our city and state officials as we continue to elevate Georgia as a premier, global sports destination.”

The first two Super Bowls held in Atlanta were at the now-demolished Georgia Dome in 1994 and 2000.

New Orleans will host the game following this season. It then goes to California for two years, with the San Francisco Bay Area hosting in 2026 and Los Angeles in 2027.

GUADALAJARA, México (AP) — Guadalajara is the capital of a Mexican state that is home to tequila and Mariachi music. It is also considered the birthplace of a less flattering tradition – a homophobic soccer chant that has cost Mexico hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines over the past two decades.

It’s no wild guess that the chant, a one-word slur which literally means male prostitute in Spanish, will be heard from the crowd in Guadalajara’s Akron stadium when Mexico hosts the United States in a friendly on Tuesday.

Multiple sanctions from FIFA and campaigns by Mexican soccer officials to educate fans have not been able to stamp it out. The chant persists in both club and national team soccer in Mexico, not least in games between the two North American rivals who will co-host the 2026 World Cup together with Canada.

The last time the U.S. men’s team played Mexico, in the CONCACAF Nations League final in Texas in March, the referee&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mexico-concacaf-homophobic-chants-c0a7e21a3303875b8d4facc9e959e4ff">stopped the game twice</a>&nbsp;due to homophobic chanting by Mexico fans. Last year, a game in Las Vegas between the two sides was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-mexico-nations-league-ad90f5404dce6b94da3f677d4d0f7b49">cut short</a>&nbsp;for the same reason.

In Guadalajara, a city with a strong soccer tradition which has two teams in Mexico’s top soccer league and another two in the second division, many local fans told The Associated Press that they considered the chant to be harmless and only meant to poke fun at opposing teams.

“Soccer is still a party, and the chant is just for fun. People who yell it mean no offense to the rival,” said Luis Gallardo, a 38-year-old who was wearing the Mexico national team’s black away shirt. “It’s been going on for years and I don’t think it’s going to change.”

The slur, typically used when the opposing goalkeeper takes a goal kick, is hardly the only offensive chant heard in soccer stadiums worldwide, but its persistent use at international tournaments has become a costly embarrassment for the Mexican soccer federation.

The federation has been fined countless times by FIFA for “discriminatory behavior” by supporters, including 100,000 Swiss francs ($114,000) for two incidents during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Mexico has appealed those penalties.

The Mexican soccer federation long argued that the chant wasn’t aimed at gays and that the word had different connotations in contemporary Mexican culture. However, in recent years the federation launched campaigns to make it go away, with stadium announcers urging the crowd to refrain from discriminatory chants and eliciting the help of soccer stars and other celebrities to get the message across.

The federation in 2022 threatened fans shouting the slur at games with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/soccer-sports-mexico-mexico-city-fifa-0661871618a16acb28fca8255fe1c9fc">five-year stadium bans</a>. At the time, then-federation president Yon de Luisa said regardless of the intention of those using the slur, what matters is how it’s received by others.

“If it is discriminatory, we should avoid it,” said De Luisa, who later resigned after Mexico’s poor performance in Qatar where the team was eliminated in the group stage.

The origin of the chant is somewhat unclear, but it’s been traced back to a 2004 Olympic qualifier between Mexico and the U.S. in Guadalajara, the capital of the state of Jalisco. It then spread to stadiums across Mexico with fans of Guadalajara soccer club Atlas.

Francisco Acuña, a 55-year-old Atlas fan, said the chant was a way for fans to express emotion during the game and shouldn’t be taken too seriously.

“The people who know soccer they know that the game is intense and even players get hot-headed on the field and then they hug each other at the end of the match,” he said.

Alejandro Oliva, a 40-year-old soccer fan in downtown Guadalajara, said he didn't understand why some people find the chant offensive.

“It amazes me that outside of Mexico people believe that it’s a homophobic chant. In Mexico it’s normal and it does not offend anyone,” he said. “I think that even people from the gay community use the word, and they don’t get aggravated.”

“It’s clearly homophobic because you are degrading a person with an insult of sexual and negative connotation,” said Andoni Bello, an LGBTQ+ activist and outspoken critic of the chant who played for Mexico in amateur soccer tournaments organized by the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.iglfa.org/">International Gay and Lesbian Football Association.</a>

He said Mexico must get rid of the chant by the 2026 World Cup when the world’s eyes will be on the country. Mexico is set to host 13 World Cup games, including four in Guadalajara.

Bello urged tournament organizers to reach out to the LGBTQ+ community for help in dealing with the issue.

Mexico struggling to stamp out homophobic chant ahead of the World Cup

Kansas was picked first in&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-college-basketball-poll">the AP Top 25 preseason men’s basketball poll</a>&nbsp;Monday, getting the No. 1 nod on half of the 60 ballots from a national media panel to start the season ahead of Alabama and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/video/mens-college-basketball-dan-hurley-connecticut-huskies-los-angeles-lakers-national-98d96d5729ff40aeb71f472991b07a4b">two-time defending national champion UConn</a>.

Kansas scooped up 30 first-place votes from the AP panel. The Crimson Tide, led by All-American guard Mark Sears and Jarin Stevenson, earned 14 first-place votes and UConn, which is trying to become the first school since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ap-top-25-kentucky-duke-unlv-carolina-d62e3f34683ee1177fbd58503de93c43">John Wooden’s teams at UCLA</a>&nbsp;to win three straight titles, received 11 first-place votes and is third.

Houston earned four first-place votes and is fourth ahead of Iowa State, which returns its top four scorers from a team that was a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Gonzaga received one first-place vote and is the sixth.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ucla-arizona-basketball-series-358d5e05147001546b771bdcc97e9aac">The new-look Big 12</a>, which lost Oklahoma and Texas but welcomed Arizona, Arizona State, Utah and Colorado, has three of the top five and five of the top 10 in the preseason AP poll. The SEC leads the way with nine in the Top 25.

“To have three Big 12 teams in the top five and five in the top 10 just shows how competitive this league will be,” Self said. “Every year we talk about the Big 12 being the toughest conference in the nation and with the four additions it became even stronger.”

No. 11 Auburn, Tennessee and Texas A&amp;M start off the second 10, followed by Purdue and Creighton. John Calipari has Arkansas at No. 16 with Indiana, Marquette, Texas and Cincinnati — making its first poll appearance since 2019 — in the top 20.

The Boilermakers are trying to win a third straight Big Ten title after the departure of&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nba-draft-zach-edey-6a7f3184d13c40b76bf9b41b45d1aa31">AP player of the year Zach Edey</a>.

“We have three starters back from a Final Four team. We have five freshmen. We have a lot of guys with experience outside of those three starters,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “We’re excited about it. We’re excited about this group.”

Florida, UCLA, Kentucky, Ole Miss and Rutgers round out the preseason Top 25.

“I’m excited about the expectations,” said Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell, whose team is ranked in the preseason poll for the first time since 1978. “We always had high expectations, and now in a league with 18 teams, you know, people are saying, ‘How good are you? There’s 18 teams. They’re great coaches.’ I don’t know where we sit. If you came to our practice yesterday, you would say, ‘Oh, boy.’ And if you came a couple of days earlier, you might think, ‘Hey, they’re going to be pretty good.'”

Illinois is tops among others receiving votes after reaching the Elite Eight. Rick Pitino has St. John's on the doorstep along with Xavier, Texas Tech and Wake Forest. The first regular-season poll is due out Nov. 11.

Four schools that have never appeared in the Top 25 received preseason votes, led by McNeese State, which went back to the NCAA Tournament last season. Little Rock, Grand Canyon and High Point also received votes.

Tuesday's Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Ellinwood cross country traveled to Wichita Saturday morning to compete in the Wild Wind Fest. The bulk of the schools were from the metro area but also included teams from as far west as Liberal and as far east as Joplin, Mo.

The high school fed off the energy of a course packed with rowdy spectators for seven personal records (PRs). Jenna Borror, Ali Gonzalez, Madison Dombroski, Shae Hoskins, Ethan Robl, Grey Ringwald, and Jonas Kern all set new bests for themselves.

Some of our points of focus this year have been staying engaged and aggressive late in the race and being fast finishers. The high school did that very well and with the timing system scoring the teams at the halfway point we were able to get evidence of that focus. The girls' team moved up two places in the last half of the race and the boys' team gained one spot.&nbsp;

This was the last meet for the middle school, and they had a great morning. Eden Ringwald (5), Addilyn Joiner (24), Caleb Herrman (22), and Cody Knop (29) all medaled. All middle school races were combined into two large fields, 6-8 girls and 6-8 boys. In addition to these medalists, nearly all middle schoolers had PR's (Personal Records) in the 2 mile. Eden Ringwald, Addilyn Joiner, Leah Steffan, Lauren Rugan, Emmalynn Perron, Maggie Kern, and Victoria Recinos all had PRs. Chloe Vaupel also ran a gutsy race finishing in the middle of our pack and only seconds off her PR after battling some sickness midweek.

The middle school boys squad all with PRs included Caleb Herrman, Cody Knop, Josh Zook, Kaden Clawson, Zarron Luker, and Jace Drake.

Ellinwood runners set several new personal bests Saturday in Wichita

Posting a program third best time the last time on the course,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/limo_lel_nec1">Lel Limo</a>&nbsp;once again made a program impact leading the Barton Community College men's cross country team Saturday at the Cowley Tiger Preview held at the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield, Kansas.

Following a month layoff from competition, four Cougars were competing in their first 8k race of the year being led by Limo placing 10th overall of the 86-man field in a time of 24:40.23. The clocking was good for a program 8th fastest in following up his program 3rd best effort the last time on the course a month ago at the FHSU Tiger Open.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/kiprono_lisbon_o9fe">Lisbon Kiprono</a>&nbsp;crossed next for the Cougars in the 53rd position in 28:30.52 as four seconds separated the remaining two Cougars with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/gordon_keandro_4v0r">Keandro Gordon</a>'s 31:21.76 beating out&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/woods_korbin_k587">Korbin Woods</a>' 31:25.34 for the 77th placing.

Barton will have the next two weeks of training before returning to Winfield for the KJCCC/Region 6 Championships held Friday, October 25.

The clocking was good for a program 8th fastest in following up his program 3rd best effort the last time on the course a month ago at the FHSU Tiger Open.<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/kiprono_lisbon_o9fe">Lisbon Kiprono</a>&nbsp;crossed next for the Cougars in the 53rd position in 28:30.52 as four seconds separated the remaining two Cougars with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/gordon_keandro_4v0r">Keandro Gordon</a>'s 31:21.76 beating out&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/mxc/2024-25/bios/woods_korbin_k587">Korbin Woods</a>' 31:25.34 for the 77th placing.Barton will have the next two weeks of training before returning to Winfield for the KJCCC/Region 6 Championships held Friday, October 25.

Limo again makes impact leading Barton Men’s Cross Country at Tiger Preview

A pair of Barton Community College women's cross country team members had their last regular season tune-up Saturday competing at the Cowley Tiger Preview held at the Kansas Veterans' Home in Winfield, Kansas.

Fielding just the two runners,&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wxc/2024-25/bios/schultz_lakota_kjdl">Lakota Schultz</a>, who competed for host Cowley last year, recorded a season best 5k race time of 20:10.43 in placing 20th of the 53-entry race.

Freshman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wxc/2024-25/bios/sleichter_lainie_fhns">Lainie Sleichter</a>&nbsp;also had a solid race by taking off over two minutes from her best time in posting a 24:18.94 clocking to place 48th overall.

Training for the next two weeks, Barton returns to Winfield for the KJCCC/Region 6 Championships held Friday, October 25.

The Barton Community College swimming programs opened the dual portion of the season Saturday afternoon at the Reiver Triangular held at the Titan Hill Intermediate Pool in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Competing against Maryville University and host Iowa Western Community College, the Lady Cougars claimed the dual with five first place finishes to rack up 549.0 points with Maryville finishing runner up scoring 538.50 while the Reivers of Iowa Western compiled 445.50.

On the men's side, Iowa Western garnered six golds for a top team score 922 with the Saints of Maryville falling 29 points back in the runner-up slot and Barton falling in the third spot behind six first place finishers and final 881 point accumulation.

The Cougars will have next weekend off before returning to the pool in Conway, Arkansas for the 61st Hendrix Relays on Friday October 25th before concluding the weekend in the 56th Annual Hendrix Classic on Saturday October 26th.

Women's Recap Claiming five golds throughout the afternoon, the Barton women accounted for four personal best times with two new season best marks and a new program top-10 time.

Leading the team individually was&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wswimdive/2024-25/bios/baxter_makayla_7lh3">Makayla Baxter</a>'s pair of gold medals, as the freshman mended two new personal best times first coming in 100 backstroke with a stoppage of 1:14.51 before concluding her day with the fastest wall touch of 2:38.71 in the 200 backstroke.

Barton's final personal best time came in the 50-freestyle behind&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wswimdive/2024-25/bios/naldoza_mia_qk6f">Mia Naldoza</a>'s third place wall touch in 30.32.

Barton women's swimming wins Reiver Triangular; Cougar men finish third

An early second half goal on Saturday afternoon proved to be the difference maker as the Barton Community College men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Kansas City Kansas Community College at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Suffering their second straight loss, the Cougars drop to third in the conference standings at 5-4-0 and 9-6-1 overall while the victory moves the Blue Devils into second place in the league standings at 5-2-3 and 5-2-4 on the season.

Barton will have the week to rest up before closing out the home portion of the regular season next Saturday hosting No. 7 Cowley College in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff from the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Limited possession over the opening 45-minutes carried over early into the second half with the Blue Devils benefitting 50-seconds into the final frame as Payson Hoffstatter's long throw in placed inside the box deflecting off the unmarked body of Noah Conover and into the back of the net.

The Cougars were outshot for the second straight game and third time this season as the Blue Devils held the final edge 17-10.

Barton Women's Soccer plays to 1-1 draw with No. 7 KCK

The second-ranked 2A Ellinwood Eagles continued their reign of dominance in the Central Prairie League (CPL) volleyball tournament, clinching their eighth-straight league title Saturday. The Eagles went a perfect 6-0 on the day, not dropping a single set, and pushed their season record to 32-2.

“I was proud of the girls’ level of consistency all day,” said Ellinwood head coach Greg Maxwell. “We’re working on key aspects on our side of the net to raise our standard of play moving forward. It was a successful day, and I really liked how the team reacted in pressure situations in the finals, making the plays we needed to when it mattered most.”

Ellinwood’s dominance was on full display throughout the tournament as they overwhelmed their opponents with both precision and power. With every player contributing, the Eagles showcased the depth and determination that have made them one of the top 2A teams in Kansas.

Coach Maxwell also acknowledged the significance of the program’s success over the past decade. “It’s special for our program to earn an eighth-straight title. I’m proud of all the girls who have been part of these CPL Tournament Championships,” Maxwell added.

As the Eagles prepare to enter the postseason, they’ll look to carry this momentum forward and make another deep run, keeping their eyes on a potential state championship.

No. 2 Ellinwood volleyball team claims eighth-straight league title

The Lady Panther tennis team will have a representative at the Class 5A state championships after sophomore Paige Stacey finished fourth in the singles bracket Saturday in Salina. The doubles team of Darcy Feist and Mac Lindberg came up one win shy of state qualification.

The top six finishers from each bracket head to the state tournament, which for Class 5A, means a trip to Andover on Friday and Saturday. Stacey entered the bracket as the No. 4 seed, promptly dumping the No. 13 seed from Hutchinson 6-2, 6-0. Stacey punched her ticket to state with a 6-3, 4-6, 11-9 battle against the No. 5 seed from Newton. Kali Keough, the No. 1 seed and eventual runner-up, downed Stacey 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals. Stacey fell 6-4, 6-0 to the No. 6 seed from Newton in the consolation finals.

Feist and Lindberg entered the doubles bracket as the No. 8 seed and needed three sets to get by the No. 9 seed from Hays 4-6, 6-3, 10-6. The girls lost 6-0, 6-0 to Salina Central's powerhouse Renfro duo that blanked three opponents on the way to a regional title. Needing one more win to advance to state, Feist and Lindberg dropped a 6-4, 6-2 match to the No. 5 seed from Newton.

As the No. 15 seed in the singles bracket, Clarise Snapp had a tough draw with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to the No. 2 seed from Valley Center, who blanked three of her four opponents on the way to a regional title. Likewise, Mackenzie LaViolette and Beth Hammeke entered the doubles bracket opposite Central's Renfro girls, losing 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.

Since dropping back-to-back matches to Manhattan and fourth-ranked Clay Center (4A) in mid-September, the No. 9 Lady Panther volleyball team has now rattled off 19 consecutive wins. Great Bend posted a 5-0 record Saturday in El Dorado to win that tournament and improve to 27-2 on the season. Three of the five wins came in straight sets.

Four of the five opponents Saturday have .500 records or better. Class 4A Chanute sits a 20-8 on the season after a 25-14, 19-25, 25-17 win by Great Bend. The Lady Panther seniors were big at the net offensively as Kara Feist pounded out 13 kills and Cassie Ellegood added 12. Feist also had a pair of blocks. Junior Ava Kaiser served up a pair of aces, and sophomore Kya Behr finished with 33 assists. The back row was busy with 66 digs in the three sets. Sophomore Alex Mayers led the way with 17, followed by 16 from Kaiser and 15 from Behr.

Great Bend needed just two sets to get by 15-9 Valley Center 25-18, 25-19. Ellegood led the offense with seven kills, followed by six from Behr and four from freshman Mikala Minton. Ellegood finished with three blocks on the defensive side. Mayers served up two of the team's three aces in the win, and Behr finished with 15 assists. Kaiser was huge in the back row with 16 of the team's 41 digs. Minton and Mayers combined for 15 more.
