BOSTON (AP) — Five athletes are becoming the first from South Africa to compete in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston as part of a crew comprised of all people of color. The event is part of a multinational effort to expand access to one of the most exclusive, elite sports. In recent years, diversity initiatives have expanded in rowing. The first all-Black women’s 8+ from the U.S. competed at the Charles in 2022. Lwazi-Tsebo Zwane, a 23—year-old from Germiston, South Africa, said he and his boatmates feel very aware of the fact that they are role models for younger rowers.

(AP) — Zabien Brown returned an interception 99 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half and No. 6 Alabama rolled to a 37-20 victory over No. 11 Tennessee in the rivalry known as the “Third Saturday in October.” Brown’s pick gave the Tide a 23-7 lead and was all Alabama’s defense needed while turning in its best performance of the season. Belichick, in his first year with a lucrative contract, faces scrutiny both on and off the field. Coach Kyle Shanahan says tight end George Kittle will return after missing five games with a hamstring injury. Purdy initially hurt his toe in the season opener and will now miss his fifth game in six weeks. Jones, who is 3-1 as a starter, leads the NFL with 313 passing yards per game. The 49ers hope Kittle's return will boost their running game and provide Jones with another passing option.

Friday’s football game may have been a road contest for the
No. 2 Panthers, but the new stadium at Hays High School featured many Great
Bend trademarks: Panther fans helped fill the facility with more than 4,000
people, senior Ian Premer kept up his torrential scoring pace, and a 43-19 win
was even capped with fireworks at both ends of the field.

“We just kept our composure knowing it’s a big game, obviously,”
said Panther junior Cooper Ohnmacht. “They’re a great team, we’re a great team.
We knew it was going to be a battle. We kept our cool and stuck together as a
team.”

The first half played out like the battle it was supposed to
be. The offenses combined for three turnovers on downs, three punts, and an
interception in the first two quarters. Great Bend was able to take advantage
of a short field on its second drive. Premer scored the first of five
touchdowns on the night on a 12-yard run with 1:08 to play in the opening
period.

Hays threatened to tie the game just before the half. The
Indians marched 81 yards all the way to the Panther 1-yard line. With time
running out and no timeouts, Hays was able to run just two plays inside the
5-yard line. The Panther defense forced an errant pass as time expired to hang
out to the 7-0 halftime lead.

The offenses proved unstoppable in the second half. Just
three plays in, Premer put together a 54-yard highlight run just 94 seconds
into the third quarter. Freshman Giovanni Cruz’s PAT bumped the Panther lead to
14-0.

Hays got on the board via its workhorse in senior Holden
Lind, who punched it in from two yards out on the next Indian drive. Lind finished
the night with 234 yards on 34 carries but managed just a pair of touchdowns.

“He’s a great player,” Ohnmacht said of Lind. “Coming in, we
knew we had to stop him. Once again, it was just teamwork – each guy having the
other guy’s back. It was just one big team.”

It was off to the races again for Premer on the next Panther
drive. Senior Daxton Minton dumped a pass to Premer in the backfield. Premer
broke more tackles and found space to complete a 64-yard touchdown pass. Hays
answered with its best drive of the night, marching 58 yards on 14 plays before
junior Braxton Basgall scored from 10 yards out but the PAT sailed wide for a
21-13 score early in the fourth quarter.

Minton used his legs on the next Great Bend drive. Facing
third-and-long, Minton used a design run to keep the drive alive. A few plays
later, he ran 25 yards down the Hays sideline, diving at the pylon to cap a
25-yard touchdown run. That pushed the Panther lead to 28-13.

Hays scored its final points of the night on a 54-yard
touchdown run from Lind. The 2-point try missed to keep the Great Bend lead at
two possessions 28-19. But it did not matter. Premer took the next play from
scrimmage 44 yards, then added his fourth touchdown of the night on a 2-yard
run. On the next Hays play from scrimmage, Premer returned an interception 35
yards for the final points of the game with 3:05 to play.

&nbsp;“We knew we would put
up some points,” Ohnmacht said. “We know what we’re capable of. We knew we
could run some of the stuff we wanted. Forty-three is a great score for us,
especially against this team.”

Premer finished with 133 rushing yards and three scores on
just nine carries. He added 114 yards and a touchdown on five receptions. At
safety, he had the pick-six and delivered one of the hardest hits across the
high school football season this fall.

Minton entered the night with 348 yards, 12 touchdowns, and
no interceptions on 21-of-24 passing over his last three games. He finished
Friday’s win with 192 yards and another touchdown on 12-of-18 passing. Ohnmacht
caught six passes for 64 yards.

Basgall ran for 60 yards on his 10 attempts for Hays, and Indian
senior Zane Viegra threw for 83 yards and an interception on 8-of-15 passing.

Rivalry games are among the most highly anticipated – and hotly contested – matchups in high school sports every year. Some of these games have been played annually for decades, so the emotions are higher, and the intensity is stronger to secure bragging rights for another year.

Unfortunately, several high school football rivalry games recently have moved beyond spirited contests and ended with fights, chaos and violence – the exact opposite of one of the major tenets of high school sports: Good Sportsmanship.

And the bad behavior and disruptive acts have not been relegated to players on the field. In one school district, there were fights in the stands among spectators – both adults and students. Henceforth, the stadium will be divided into sections, and the number of fans will be limited. In addition, in some schools, students will only be able to attend games accompanied by a parent or guardian.

In a rivalry game in another state, a similar occurrence of fans fighting in the stands brought police to the stadium, and the game was cancelled at halftime. The opportunity for participation by players on the field was erased by senseless acts in the stands.

And in yet another football matchup, multiple fights on the field among players in a rivalry game brought the game to an abrupt end in the second quarter. 

In addition to these unsportsmanlike acts – and others – that have occurred within playing venues, there have been several reports of gun violence that have occurred on school property outside stadiums. In most cases, these events mirror the increase in gun violence at large gatherings nationwide. Often, fights between individuals not connected to the game whatsoever occur outside stadiums and, unfortunately, some end violently with the use of guns.

In our meetings with directors of state associations last month, sportsmanship – or the need to improve behavior – was one of three recurring issues mentioned most often by these leaders who govern programs for the 8.2 million participants in high school sports.

As the regular season begins to wind down in football and other fall sports, the contests naturally become more intense. And while winning crucial games is important to players, coaches, parents and other fans, the way and manner in which those involved handle winning or losing is even more important.

Although perfect behavior has yet to be achieved – and never will be – the pursuit of good sporting behavior MUST be ongoing.

Rather than spectators like the ones described above, more fans are needed at high school sporting events. Fans support the officials, the players and the coaches, unlike those who are involved in fights or fanatics who tear down and do harm to the participants, the school and the community.

NFHS playing rules are written to encourage sportsmanship. Participation in these programs should promote respect, integrity and sportsmanship. However, for these ideals to occur, everyone involved must do their part.

If coaches act in a sportsmanlike manner, their behavior sets the tone for players, spectators and others. If coaches, however, are constantly complaining about the decision of contest officials, spectators are more likely to do the same. 

There must be a collaborative, working relationship between contest officials and game administration to promote good sportsmanship and safely conduct the contest. Every individual has a role to play in creating a positive, sportsmanlike atmosphere at contests.

The Sportsmanship course on the NFHS Learning Center is an excellent resource for everyone involved in schools sports and activities – coaches, students, parents, administrators, officials, and leaders and students in the performing arts.

This revised course provides an understanding of what good sportsmanship looks and sounds like, clearly defines everyone’s roles during interscholastic events and reaffirms a commitment to maintaining those roles for the betterment of the students and activities involved. The course also features interviews with students, parents, coaches, administrators and officials about sportsmanship.

And as postseason contests begin, schools should make sure they are prepared from a safety and security standpoint – not only for games, but for practices inside and outside the building as well.

Many resources are available for high school athletic administrators to implement after-school safety and security programs, including two free courses on the NFHS Learning Center – Afterschool Security and the new course, Emergency Action Planning for Afterschool Programs. 

Establishing a culture of positive behavior in our schools starts with each of us, no matter our role – coach, student, administrator, official, fan or parent. We all must commit to treating one another with dignity and respect.

Kansas finished sixth in the coaches' preseason poll garnering 163 points. Houston (224 points) is the coaches' favorite followed by BYU (204), Texas Tech (200), Arizona (179), and Iowa State (170). Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team or student-athletes in the poll.

Peterson was one of four unanimous selections by the coaches on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. A 6-foot-6 guard from Canton, Ohio, Peterson is one of Kansas' highest-ever recruited players after earning Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year and McDonald's All-American honors following the 2024-25 season. Last season, Peterson averaged 30.4 points, 7.2 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 2.2 steals per game. He ended 2024-25 ranked No. 1 by 247Sports.com and On3.com. MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– Junior guard&nbsp;P.J. Haggerty&nbsp;has been named to the 10-member Preseason All-Big 12 team by the league coaches, as the conference announced its annual preseason poll and all-conference teams on Thursday morning (Oct. 16).&nbsp; 

A consensus Second Team All-American and AAC Player of the Year at Memphis, Haggerty is one of three newcomers on the Preseason All-Big 12 team, along with freshman phenoms&nbsp;AJ Dybantsa&nbsp;of BYU and&nbsp;Darryn Peterson&nbsp;of Kansas. The trio of newcomers are joined by seven returners in BYU's&nbsp;Richie Saunders, Houston's&nbsp;Emanuel Sharp,&nbsp;Joseph Tugler&nbsp;and&nbsp;Milos Uzan, Iowa State's&nbsp;Tamin Lipsey&nbsp;and Texas Tech's&nbsp;Christian Anderson&nbsp;and&nbsp;JT Toppin.

Dybantsa, Uzan, Peterson and Toppin were all unanimous selections.

Toppin and Peterson were named the Preseason Player and Freshman of the Year, while Toppin's teammate&nbsp;LeJuan Watts&nbsp;was selected as the Preseason Newcomer of the Year.

K-State was picked ninth in the 16-team preseason poll with 117 points, just three points behind eighth-place Cincinnati and 27 points ahead of 10th-place TCU.

Reigning regular-season and tournament champion Houston was selected first with 224 points and 14 of the 16 first-place votes followed by second-place BYU (204 points, one first-place vote) and third-place Texas Tech (200 points). The rest of the top-7 included Arizona (179 points, one first-place vote), Iowa State (170), Kansas (163) and Baylor (137).

The rest of the preseason poll included eighth-place Cincinnati (120) followed by K-State, TCU, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, Utah, UCF, Colorado and Arizona State.

Haggerty's selection marks the second straight year that a Wildcat has been named to the preseason all-conference team (Coleman Hawkins, 2024) by the league coaches. He is one of nine players in school history to be chosen for preseason all-conference honors dating to&nbsp;Manny Dies&nbsp;in 1998-99. Others include&nbsp;Jacob Pullen&nbsp;and&nbsp;Curtis Kelly&nbsp;in 2010-11,&nbsp;Rodney McGruder&nbsp;in 2012-13 and&nbsp;Marcus Foster&nbsp;in 2014-15 and&nbsp;Barry Brown Jr.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Dean Wade&nbsp;in 2018-19.

NEW YORK (AP) — An American businessman whose firm invested in several European soccer clubs that struggled under its ownership has been indicted in New York. The charges are of financial wrongdoing in an alleged $500 million fraud scheme. Josh Wander co-founded Miami-based 777 Partners that owned stakes in an Australian airline plus soccer clubs in Germany, Italy, Belgium and Brazil. Wander is alleged to have been “pledging assets that his firm did not own” and “falsifying bank statements.” The 777 story became a cautionary tale in soccer's global trend of “multi-club ownership.”

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Indiana has announced a new eight-year contract with coach Curt Cignetti worth at least $92.8 million. The deal rewards him for pushing the Hoosiers into national championship contention in just two seasons. The school said the average annual compensation for Cignetti will be approximately $11.6 million. The contract runs through November 30, 2033. Cignetti is 17-2 since arriving from James Madison. The Hoosiers advanced to the College Football Playoff for the first time last year and are currently ranked No. 3 nationally.

MIAMI (AP) — FIFA has announced that over 1 million tickets have been sold for next year's World Cup. The tournament will be hosted by the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The highest demand for tickets comes from these three countries. FIFA reports that fans from 212 countries and territories have purchased tickets, even though only 28 of the 48 spots have been filled. The tournament runs from June 11 through July 19. The first round of ticket sales was a lottery, with 4.5 million applicants. The next draw opens on October 27. FIFA has also launched its official resale platform for tickets.

could not stop the Great Bend girls from claiming a fifth-straight Western
Athletic Conference cross country championship Thursday in Liberal. The
Panthers scored 31 points to beat Dodge City by 15 spots. Garden City finished
third with 71 points. The Panther boys finished third as a team.

The Lady Panthers nearly swept the top-three spots, led by
freshman Decorah Schroeter with the WAC title in 16:20.23 on the 4K course.
Junior Bella Long won the silver in 16:35.37, and freshman Sydney Stein
finished fourth in 16:54.55, 15 seconds from the bronze. Sophomore Samantha
Negaard ran eighth overall in 18:24.31, and freshman Makenzie Gwin earned the final
team points in 16th with a time of 19:07.28. Sophomore Sydney James
placed 26th in 19:50.04, and sophomore Alyssa Prendergrast finished
30th in 20:14.35.

Garden City dominated the boys’ race with 22 points,
followed by Dodge City with 46 points, and Great Bend with 75. Hays finished a
distant fourth with 105 points.

The Buffs took four of the top-six individual spots in a 5K
race, led by senior Trevor Fry with the gold by 16 seconds in 17:10. Panther

The 10th-ranked Barton Community College volleyball team continued its mid-season surge Wednesday evening in Great Bend, making quick work of a Butler Community College squad receiving votes in the latest NJCAA Division I poll with a straight-set victory (25-12, 25-18, 25-23).

Replicating its sweep earlier this year in El Dorado, the Cougars extended their series win streak to four and pushed their current run to six consecutive victories. With the result, Barton improved to 10-1 in conference play and 23-5 overall, while Butler dropped to 6-5 in league action and 15-9 on the season.

Following a week away from competition, Barton returns to its home hardcourt next Wednesday, welcoming Pratt Community College for a 6:30 p.m. first serve.

Barton turned in its most efficient offensive outing of the season, guided by setters&nbsp;Ori Briger&nbsp;(20 assists) and&nbsp;Mileah Neal&nbsp;(18 assists) in directing the Cougars to a season-best .414 attack percentage, surpassing .375 in every set — highlighted by a blistering .481 mark in the opener.

Stasa Stamenkovic&nbsp;powered the attack with 19 kills on a career-high .600 hitting percentage, adding a service ace and four digs.&nbsp;Aubrey Olander&nbsp;followed with 10 kills at a .474 clip, paired with two aces, three digs, and two blocks.&nbsp;Caroliny Cristiny&nbsp;chipped in six kills, while&nbsp;Paola Batista&nbsp;added five on .444 hitting with a block.&nbsp;Brylynn Wicker&nbsp;contributed five kills and&nbsp;Indigo Pruitt&nbsp;tallied four on .300 hitting to round out a balanced front-row effort.

Reigning and five-time Defensive Player of the Week&nbsp;Mina Kaneko&nbsp;led the backline's 40 digs with 10, while Cristiny and Briger added nine and eight respectively.

In addition to the evening's performance, the Cougars recognized former standouts Brooke DeLanghe and Jeanie Lapka, both freshmen members of Barton's 2003 NJCAA National Championship team. DeLanghe would also leave her mark the following season, ranking fifth on the program's single-season digs list with 595 in 2004.

Wednesday on Sports Day(Watch)

After winning the local Major League Baseball Pitch Hit and Run competition this summer, two local athletes advanced to the regional competition, hosted by the Kansas City Royals, and came home with Championship Medals.

Baze Hogan, a Freshman at Great Bend High School, won the 13/14-year-old softball division in Kansas City with a score of 1,140 points, bettering her score in the local competition of 1,000 points. Baze is daughter of Kristy Blakeslee and Toby Hogan. She also won the regional competition in 2021 in the 9/10 year old division.

Briggs Keiswetter competing in the 9/10-year-old baseball division, turned in the best performance in his division with a score of 875 points in the Pitch Hit and Run competition in Kansas City. Keiswetter is a 4th grader at Cornerstone Classical Private School in Salina and the son of Dustin and Becky Keiswetter.

From the 30 Major League Baseball teams plus Puerto Rico, only 4 regionals winners were invited to participate in the World Series competition. Neither Hogan nor Keiswetter’s scores made the cut.

The local MLB Pitch Hit &amp; Run competition is sponsored by the Great Bend Optimist Club and the Great Bend Recreation Commission. Eighty young people showed up to test their baseball and softball skills in the local competition on July 1st. The winning scores in each age division were submitted to MLB for consideration in competing in the Kansas City Royals regional competition. Three of the eight local winners had qualifying scores for the competition in Kansas City.

Optimist Club President John Sullivan said “the local Optimist Club is proud to be a part of this event. Every young person has the opportunity to participate, and the winners can be rewarded with a special Major League Baseball experience.”

Great Bend Recreation Commission Sports Director Shane Sandberg added that “it’s amazing to think that 25% of the Kansas City Royals Regional winners came from our local competition.” Watch the Rec Commission activity guides for information on next year’s local competition. It generally takes place in early July. “We’d like to see 175 local competitors next summer” Sandberg said.

will take on Larned at 5 p.m., and Beloit will play Colby on the other court at
5 p.m. at the Activity Center. Hoisington will play Colby and Beloit will play

The result moves Barton to 8-6-1 overall, while the Bluejays JV squad drops to 0-1-0 on the season. The Cougars face a quick turnaround returning to conference play Wednesday with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff against Dodge City Community College at Cavanaugh Field.

After a scoreless opening half, Takaki broke the deadlock with 23:55 remaining, blasting home a setup from&nbsp;Cydnee Adams&nbsp;for her second goal of the campaign and Adams' first collegiate assist.
