KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The state of Missouri is losing its third NFL franchise and the second in the past decade, and the decision by the Chiefs last week to depart their longtime home at Arrowhead Stadium for a new domed facility in Kansas may hurt the most.

The Chiefs announced their intention to move after Kansas lawmakers approved a bond package earlier in the day to help pay for the new facility. It will be built near Kansas Speedway and a retail district known as The Legends in Kansas City, Kansas — only about 30 miles from Arrowhead Stadium, but a distance that has perhaps never felt so far.

“Years ago as a kid, my family was homeless for a while and we lived in a motel not too far from the stadium," said Quinton Lucas, the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, shortly after the team’s announcement. "I knew we struggled, but I believed nothing was cooler than living within a stones' throw of what I thought then and today is the greatest stadium in football.

“Like a lot of parents in Chiefs Kingdom, my single mother scraped some money together to get me to Arrowhead for my first game — 300-level upper deck for a 30-7 preseason loss to the Buffalo Bills in 1993. I’ve been hooked ever since.”

Missouri lawmakers had been desperately trying to keep the Chiefs with their own funding package. They held a special legislative session in June backed by Gov. Mike Kehoe that authorized bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits for each stadium and unspecified aid from local governments.

Lucas also had been working with local lawmakers in recent days on a counterproposal to keep the Chiefs in Missouri.

“We understand our very fair but very responsible financial offer of taxpayer support was surpassed by an even more robust public financing package in Kansas,” he said. “The Chiefs have a business to run and today made a business decision. We wish them well.”

St. Louis lost the Cardinals, then the Rams

The previous two NFL teams to leave Missouri were in St. Louis. The Cardinals, who came from Chicago in 1960, left for the Phoenix area in 1988 and now play in a state-of-the-art stadium in Glendale, Arizona. The Rams arrived from Anaheim, California, in 1995, then headed to Los Angeles in part because of their inability to secure funding to replace The Dome at America's Center.

The Rams recently built SoFi Stadium in the suburb of Inglewood, California, at a cost of more than $5 billion.

Other professional sports franchises to jilt Missouri include the Athletics of Major League Baseball, who left Kansas City for Oakland, California, following the 1967 season; the Kings of the National Basketball Association, who moved to Sacramento, California, in 1985; and the Kansas City Scouts of the National Hockey League, who eventually became the Colorado Rockies.

Sporting Kansas City, a club in Major League Soccer, once called Arrowhead Stadium home. It now plays its games on the Kansas side of the state line at Children's Mercy Park, close to where the Chiefs are expected to build their new stadium.

“I feel like Kansas won the Super Bowl,” said Ty Masterson, the president of the Kansas Senate.

Five decades at the Truman Sports Complex

The Chiefs and Kansas City Royals have played for more than five decades at the Truman Sports Complex, where Arrowhead and Kauffman stadiums sit a couple hundred yards apart. Both are revered, the NFL stadium for its tailgating experience and loud home-field advantage, and the Major League Baseball stadium for its picturesque backdrop of glittering outfield fountains.

Both teams have had plenty of recent success there, too.

The Chiefs, who at 6-9 have been eliminated from playoff contention this season, had appeared in the past three Super Bowls and the previous seven conference title games. They have some of the biggest stars in the game, including quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who has led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl titles in five trips to the big game.

The Royals, who won their second World Series in 2015, returned to the playoffs following the 2024 season. They are led by Bobby Witt Jr., one of the bright young stars of the game, and are coming off a second consecutive winning season.

One of the prevailing questions now is whether the Royals will follow the Chiefs across the Kansas-Missouri line.

The Royals insist they will not play at Kauffman Stadium beyond the 2031 season, and their preference has been to build a new downtown ballpark. But a sales tax extension that would have paid for an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium and a new home for the Royals was soundly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-royals-kansas-city-stadiums-e9605296b85e91699441e4ba10e83212">defeated last year</a>&nbsp;by voters in Jackson County, Missouri, leaving both to look elsewhere.

Through an affiliate, the Royals have purchased the mortgage for a tract of land in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kansas.

The announcement of the Chiefs' moving to Kansas generated widespread reaction among fans. Some were concerned about the price of tickets in a new facility, others about traffic flow and construction, and still others about the legacy of Arrowhead Stadium.

“I don’t think it is the greatest idea,” said Dustin Allen, who lives in Blue Springs, Missouri, and was visiting Union Station in downtown Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday. “I think that where they have it is a very nice spot. I will say that the traffic over there is always fun. I think it’s nice to have them downtown in some way, shape or form.”

Mike Robinson, a season ticket-holder from Kansas City, Kansas, was visiting a science museum inside the train station with his son.

“I’m pretty sure prices will go up,” he said. “That’s what I’m concerned about. A brand new stadium. Season ticket holders may not be able to keep up with their tickets with the rising prices.”

Analaysia Miller, a Chiefs fan from Kansas City, Kansas, didn’t have a strong opinion about the move since the team isn't leaving entirely. The new stadium will be about 35 miles (56 kilometers) west of the old one.

“It is just whatever they want to do,” she said as she visited Union Station with her three children. “As long as they are still in our city, representing for our city. That’s all that matters to me.”

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Marcus Woodson, an accomplished secondary coach with 21 years of experience, has been hired as Kansas State's co-defensive coordinator working with the defensive backs, head coach Collin Klein announced Monday.

Woodson arrives in Manhattan after spending the last three seasons on staff at Arkansas, serving as the Razorbacks' co-defensive coordinator.

"My family and I are incredibly excited to join the Kansas State family," said Woodson, who crossed paths with K-State defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson when the duo worked together at Fresno State in 2014 and 2015. "I am grateful for the opportunity to pour into our players and help build something special here in Manhattan."

This will be Woodson's first stint in the Big 12 having previously spent five seasons in the SEC and three in the ACC.

"Marcus is a great addition to our defensive staff," said Klein. "He is of high character, hard working and a winner. I am excited for him to help lead our defense and develop our secondary."

In his first season in Fayetteville, Woodson helped the Arkansas secondary to its best pass defense in 12 seasons, allowing 202.8 yards per game. It ranked 31st nationally that season, a 99-spot improvement from the previous year. As a whole, Arkansas allowed its fewest yards per game in a decade (357.2), while Woodson's secondary also contributed to the Razorbacks' national-leading five defensive touchdowns.

Year two at Arkansas saw Woodson help the Hogs open the season with their first shutout in six seasons in addition to road victories at Auburn and Mississippi State. Against the Tigers, Woodson saw the secondary pick off a season-high four passes and break up six others, while they picked off a pair of passes against the Bulldogs.

Woodson joined the Arkansas staff after spending three seasons at Florida State as the Seminoles' defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator. In 2022, he tutored a unit that helped the Seminoles rank fourth in the nation by allowing only 165.4 passing yards per game. Woodson coached safety Jammie Robinson to his second-straight All-ACC First Team honor in 2022 as he led Florida State with 99 tackles. It was the second-straight year Robinson paced the defense in stops as he had 84 tackles and an ACC-best four interceptions in 2021.

Robinson was the latest in a line of Woodson pupils to be selected in the NFL Draft when he was taken in the fifth round by Carolina in 2023. It was the seventh time in a four-year span a Woodson product was selected, including 2020 first-round selection Noah Igbinoghene, who was the 30th overall pick by the Miami Dolphins after Woodson coached him through move from wide receiver to defensive back upon his arrival at Auburn in 2018.

Florida State had eight different defenders grab at least one interception and force 20 total takeaways in 2021. FSU picked off at least one pass in eight-straight games to end the year, the longest streak in the nation to finish out the 2021 season and tied for the longest streak in the country at any point during that year.

During the 2020 season, Woodson's defensive backfield at Florida State was responsible for 10 takeaways and added four forced fumbles. He helped continue the development of All-ACC First Team selection Asante Samuel Jr. into one of the nation's premiere defensive backs. Samuel finished the season by leading all active ACC defenders with 29 career pass breakups before being selected in the second-round of the NFL Draft pick by the Los Angeles Chargers.

Woodson went to Florida State from Auburn where the Tigers won 17 games over the 2018 and 2019 seasons. In 2019 as the co-defensive coordinator, Woodson helped the Tigers rank eighth nationally in third down defense (29.9%) and red zone defense (71.8%), while he coached safety Jeremiah Dinson to All-SEC Second Team honors. The year prior, the Tigers returned three interceptions for touchdowns – the ninth-highest total in the nation – while they ranked 14th in the country in scoring defense (19.2 points allowed per game).

Woodson headed to The Plains after two seasons at Memphis coaching the Tigers' defensive backs. Memphis won 18 games over the two seasons, forcing a combined 60 takeaways, the second-highest total in the nation during that span. The Tigers picked off 32 passes in Woodson's two seasons and were one of only six teams in the country to record at least 16 interceptions in both 2016 and 2017.

Prior to joining the Memphis staff, Woodson coached defensive backs at Fresno State in 2014 and 2015. Woodson helped lead the Bulldogs to the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championship Game and a berth in the Hawai'i Bowl and along the way coached safety Derron Smith to All-Mountain West Conference First Team accolades before being selected by the Cincinnati Bengals in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

From 2009 through 2013, Woodson coached defensive backs and was the recruiting coordinator at Charleston Southern – tutoring five all-conference defensive backs – while he added defensive passing game coordinator duties for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. He began his coaching career at Millsaps College where he was the defensive backs coach from 2005 through 2008. The Majors won three consecutive conference championships, including an 11-1 record and No. 12 final ranking in 2008.

Woodson was a two-year starting safety at Ole Miss prior to his playing career being cut short by an injury just before his senior season of 2003. During his time as a player, the Rebels advanced to four bowl games, including the Cotton Bowl, the Music City Bowl and two trips to the Independence Bowl. He went to Ole Miss after helping lead Moss Point High School to two state titles.

A native of Moss Point, Mississippi, Woodson obtained his bachelor's degree in political science with an emphasis in criminal justice from the University of Mississippi in 2003, and he was selected for the Senior Leadership Unity Council.

Woodson and his wife, Chastity, have two sons, Carter and Bryce.

Marcus Woodson to serve as K-State’s co-defensive coordinator

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Now that the Chiefs are moving across the state line from their longtime home in Missouri to a $3 billion domed stadium to be built in Kansas, attention in the area has swung to the Royals, who have a similar decision to make regarding their own future.

One thing is certain: They will not be playing at Kauffman Stadium once their lease there expires in January 2031.

Royals owner John Sherman has long said his preference is to build a downtown ballpark, but those plans have been bogged down at nearly every turn by politics and community backlash. Last year, voters in Jackson County, Missouri, soundly defeated the extension of an existing sales tax that pays for the upkeep of Kauffman Stadium and would have helped to fund the new ballpark.

The question now is whether the Royals continue their pursuit of downtown baseball, build a new stadium elsewhere on the Missouri side of the state divide, or follow the Chiefs in moving their new home to the Kansas side of the border.

“The Royals are also a great legacy team that we would love to keep in Missouri. We will do everything we can to continue those conversations,” said Gov. Mike Kehoe, who responded with scorn to the news Monday that the Chiefs had accepted a bond package approved by Kansas lawmakers that will cover 60% of a total project expected to exceed $4 billion.

The Chiefs also plan to build a $300 million training city in the Kansas City-metro suburb of Olathe, Kansas.

“If I’m the Royals," Kehoe said, “I’m in the driver’s seat now. I’m THE team.”

In their bid to keep the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, Missouri lawmakers authorized bonds in June during a special legislative session that would cover up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits.

That is the financing package that still could be used by the Royals to build their ballpark.

But the bond package put forth by Kansas lawmakers, which would not tax residents but instead be paid off by state sales and liquor taxes generated in a defined area around the project, provides the potential to cover up to 70% of overall costs.

In the case of the Chiefs, the term sheet signed by owner Clark Hunt and Lt. Gov. David Toland calls for a stadium with at least 65,000 seats to be built by August 1, 2031, and the Chiefs to stay there for at least 30 years, with an option to remain up to 30 years more.

Along with the $3 billion stadium, the Chiefs committed to at least $1 billion in “ancillary development,” which includes a headquarters and training facility in Olathe and at least $700 million worth of retail, entertainment and other commercial space.

The agreement allows $100 million of that space to be built outside the two counties containing most of Kansas’ side of the metro.

The state agreed to issue a little more than $2.4 billion in bonds to cover roughly 60% of the costs, though if the extra development exceeds $1 billion, it would cover 70%. That makes it the largest public subsidy ever for a U.S. Stadium project.

“Missouri put together a very competitive package,” Kehoe said of the state's attempts to keeping the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, adding: “Kansas is about to leverage ... Kansas taxpayer revenue to make this deal happen. I can’t see where the numbers would pencil on that, as a business person, where it would be a good deal for Missourians.”

The Royals have considered multiple sites around downtown Kansas City, but all have had issues, whether it be traffic flow, community support or something else. They also have provided renderings in the past of a stadium and ballpark district that would be built across the Missouri River in Clay County, which is technically North Kansas City, Missouri.

But momentum of late appears to be behind a move to the suburb of Overland Park, Kansas, and a tract of land known as the Aspiria Campus, where an affiliate of the Royals already holds the mortgage. The property, once home to Sprint and still the headquarters of T-Mobile and several other companies, lies just off Interstate 435 in the south part of the metro.

Those plans have been met by opposition from residents in the affluent neighboring suburb of Leawood, Kansas.

John Mosley, a 65-year-old fan from Kansas City, Missouri, said Monday that he had been hearing people talk about Kansas using a bond package to lure the Chiefs — and, perhaps, even the Royals — across the state line for years.

“To me personally, it doesn’t matter. But I’m noticing that most things are going over into Kansas,” he said. “I’m not sure what’s going on in Missouri. I think it’s a money issue. Maybe over in Kansas things are much better. It just seems like everything is moving.”

Royals face tough stadium decision of their own as Chiefs move to Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — If Thursday night was the last game Travis Kelce played inside Arrowhead Stadium, he sure tried to make it a memorable one.

The Chiefs tight end only had five catches for 36 yards against Denver, playing alongside third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun while his good buddy Patrick Mahomes and backup Gardner Minshew were out with knee injuries. But several of those catches came in the closing minutes, nearly rallying Kansas City in what would have been a stunning upset of the Broncos.

Kelce and Co. wound up losing 20-13 in a game in which they were nearly two-touchdown underdogs.

But it was a gutsy display by him in a career filled with them.

The four-time All-Pro, who is expected to announce soon after the season whether he is retiring, could have hung up the cleats a couple of weeks ago, when the reigning AFC champions were eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in a decade.

Instead, after going to five Super Bowls — including the last three — and winning three championship rings, the 36-year-old Kelce showed that he had too much pride to quit on a lost season. He played in a humiliating loss to lowly Tennessee last week, and he was one of the few bright spots Thursday night for an offense that finished with 139 yards in all.

“A whole lot of emotions,” Kelce said afterward. “You've got everybody in the world watching you. You get to go out there with the young guys on primetime television. Young guys getting an opportunity to taste what this NFL life is like.”

“I’ll let that be a decision I’ll make with my family, friends, the Chiefs organization when the time comes,” Kelce said.

He was the final player introduced Thursday night, following Oladokun out of the tunnel in the corner of Arrowhead Stadium. As red lights flashed across the field, Kelce emerged from the fog with his signature bow-and-arrow entrance gesture toward a festive holiday crowd, and it predictably roared in delight — perhaps for the last time — as No. 87 took the field.

“You only get a few of those (moments) where you get to stand there and appreciate 60, 70-thousand Chiefs fans cheering for you,” Kelce said. “I always embrace that moment.”

In a suite high above, his fiancee, pop star Taylor Swift, watched him perform. So did Mahomes and Minshew, who took in the game together from a suite; Mahomes tore ligaments in his knee two weeks ago, Minshew did the same last week.

“You feel the generations of happiness and the love that (the fans) have,” Kelce said. "It’s a beautiful thing, man. It’s something I know I’ll cherish forever, whether it’s coming out of the tunnel or just making a big play for them. That’s why we love Arrowhead.”

Kelce has played 97 games inside the stadium over the course of a 13-year career. He caught 645 passes there, including playoffs, the third-most by any player inside a single stadium behind Jerry Rice and Larry Fitzgerald since the AFL-NFL merger.

Now, the question is whether Kelce will play next week in the Chiefs' season finale in Las Vegas.

He needs just 10 yards receiving to reach 13,000 for his career, and he could extend his franchise record — and the longest active streak in the NFL — by catching a pass in his 191st game next weekend. He could also go out with a win, rather than having lost five straight and seven of his last eight games, which is the slide the Chiefs find themselves on now.

Or, maybe he will surprise everyone and come back for one more year.

“We've been through so much together,” Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones said, making his desire clear. "Just one more (season). Just one more.”

One secured when the Broncos made one last stop in the closing second at their end of the field.

“We were going to take the delay-of-game,” Payton said afterward. “Obviously that changed the complexion of the clock, and that was a big play. We were going to take the penalty and kick the field goal. That was the plan.”

Now, the Broncos (13-3) are one step closer to locking up the AFC West, which they can do while watching at home if Houston beats the Chargers on Saturday. They also have a chance to still land the No. 1 seed and first-round playoff bye.

“It would be relaxing,” Payton said of clinching this weekend. “It would be nice.”

Nix also ran for a touchdown while throwing for 182 yards as the Broncos beat the Chiefs in Arrowhead Stadium for the first time since September 17, 2015. They also have won four of the last five in the series following a string of 16 consecutive losses.

“It's great to get that win," Payton said. “You always have to remember this: You're playing the heart of a champion, Andy Reid and this team. I don't care who comes out of that locker room. This is a team that basically has been at the top of our league for the better part of this century, and there's a ton of respect we have for what they've been able to accomplish.”

Third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun and tight end Travis Kelce tried to give Kansas City a chance in the final seconds, driving quickly down field after the Broncos had taken the lead. But a third-down pass at the Denver 26 was just out of Kelce's reach, and Oladokun overthrew Marquise Brown in the end zone on fourth down to seal the outcome.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Kelce has played 96 regular-season home games for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 36-year-old Kelce, who was chosen for the Pro Bowl for the 11th time on Tuesday, will be inside Arrowhead Stadium on Thursday night for a Christmas showdown with the Denver Broncos.

And with the Chiefs eliminated from playoff contention for the first time in a decade, and a trip to Las Vegas for their finale, it could be the last time that Kelce walks off his beloved field.

“What Travis has done to this organization, to his teammates, his coaches, this city — it's special,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said. “I hope like hell that's not true. I just have so much respect for him.”

Kelce has not yet announced whether he will retire after a superlative 13-year career in which he won three Super Bowl rings and was an All-Pro on four occasions. But he has said that his decision will be made quickly after the season ends, giving the Chiefs ample time to not only prepare for free agency and the draft but their future without him.

“I'd rather just keep the focus on this team right now,” Kelce said last week, “and all the conversations I have with the team and everything moving forward will be with them. And I think it's a unique time in my life, and unfortunately I know when the season ends this year. Typically we go into it and we don't know when it will end.”

He's had a heck of a final season, if that turns out to be the case.

After doubling down on fitness after the Chiefs were waylaid by the Eagles in the Super Bowl last February, Kelce has proceeded to play in every game during a difficult season for the team. He has 68 catches for 803 yards, allowing him to join Jerry Rice as the only players in NFL history to eclipse the 800-yards receiving mark in 12 consecutive seasons.

Kelce also has five touchdown receptions, matching the most he's had in the past three seasons.

And while Kelce could have shut it down after the Chiefs were eliminated from postseason contention for the first time since his first full season in the NFL, he has continued to take the field every day. He had a single catch for 6 yards in last week's 26-9 loss to the Titans, but it pushed his streak — the longest active one in the league — to 189 games with at least one reception.

It didn't help that backup quarterback Gardner Minshew joined Kelce's good friend, Patrick Mahomes, by tearing ligaments in his knee one week after the two-time MVP. Chris Oladokun finished the game at QB and will start on Thursday night against Denver.

“I will say this: What (Kelce) is going through even these last couple games — we're out of the playoffs, we're out, and he's out there every day, practicing, leading, helping people out,” Nagy said. “That should show a lot of these younger guys why he's playing this game, and why he is so special.”

Jumbo Ozaki has died after a battle with colon cancer. The Japan Golf Tour says Ozaki died Wednesday at age 78. Ozaki was renowned for his power and it carried him to 113 victories, all but one of them in Japan. That's what kept him from greater recognition, although he once rose to No. 5 in the world ranking. TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — The&nbsp;Kansas City Chiefs&nbsp;announced Monday they will leave their longtime home&nbsp;at Arrowhead Stadium&nbsp;for a new, domed stadium that will be built across the Kansas-Missouri state line and be ready for the start of the 2031 season.

The announcement came shortly after a council of top Kansas lawmakers voted unanimously inside a packed room at the state Capitol to allow the state to issue a little more than $2.4 billion in bonds to cover about 60% of the cost of the new stadium, a new training facility and retail and entertainment space.

The bonds will be paid off with state sales and liquor tax revenues generated in a defined area around it.

“The location of Chiefs games will change,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said after the meeting, “but some things won't change. Our fans will still be the loudest in the NFL, our games will still be the best place in the world to tailgate, and our players and coaches will be ready to compete for championships, because on the field or off the field, we are big dreamers, and we're ready for the next chapter.”

The Chiefs intend their $3 billion stadium project to be built in Kansas City, Kansas, near the Kansas Speedway and a retail district known as The Legends. The area includes Children's Mercy Park, the home of MLS club Sporting Kansas City, and Legends Field, the home of the Kansas City Monarchs minor league baseball team.

The Chiefs also plan to build their $300 million practice facility in the Kansas City-metro suburb of Olathe, Kansas. They've committed to at least $700 million in other development.

“Today's announcement is truly historic. Actually, it's a little surreal,” Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly said. “Today's announcement will touch the lives of Kansans for generations to come. Today's announcement is a total game-changer for our state.

“We have always been Chiefs fans,” Kelly said. “Now we are Chiefs family.”

State officials also predict that more than 20,000 new construction jobs will be created.

While the final location for the stadium has not been decided, Chiefs president Mark Donovan said it would seat about 65,000, roughly 10,000 fewer fans than Arrowhead Stadium. That follows a trend across professional sports of building stadiums and arenas that have fewer overall seats but more amenities, luxury seating and premium spaces.

“We have a lot of work to do. We're still early in the process,” Hunt said. “In the months ahead, we will hire an architect and contractor and get to work on the five-plus-year timeline to build a new stadium.”

The move by the Chiefs is a massive blow to Missouri lawmakers and Gov. Mike Kehoe, who had been working on their own funding package to prevent a third NFL franchise and the second in a decade from leaving their borders; the Rams left St. Louis for Los Angeles in part due to their inability to secure funding to help replace The Dome at America’s Center.

Kehoe had backed a special legislative session in June to authorize bonds covering up to 50% of the cost of new or renovated stadiums, plus up to $50 million of tax credits for each stadium and unspecified aid from local governments.

“They thought new and shiny was better than old and reliable,” Kehoe said after the Chiefs' announcement, adding that the club was in discussions with Missouri officials about staying at a renovated or rebuilt Arrowhead Stadium as late as last week.

“We won’t give up. We’ll look for cracks in the armor and find out if there’s a Missouri Show-Me solution through our sports act.”

But both Hunt and Donovan said Kansas had a key advantage: The team was negotiating only with state officials, rather than with state and local officials, as in Missouri.

A local vote upended initial renovation plans

The Chiefs originally planned an $800 million renovation of Arrowhead Stadium in a joint effort with the Royals, who are similarly planning to build a new facility to replace Kauffman Stadium. The facilities sit a couple hundred yards apart, across a parking lot, and both teams have leases with Jackson County, Missouri, that expire in January 2031.

But last year, Jackson County voters soundly&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/chiefs-royals-kansas-city-stadiums-e9605296b85e91699441e4ba10e83212">defeated a local sales tax extension</a>&nbsp;which would have helped to pay for those renovations to the football stadium while helping to fund a new ballpark for the Royals in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. That energized Kansas' efforts to lure both teams.

The Royals were not discussed by Kansas lawmakers Monday, but momentum appears to be building behind their own move across the state line. An affiliate of the club already has purchased the mortgage on a tract of land in Overland Park, Kansas.

“While the Chiefs aren’t going far away and aren’t gone yet, today is a setback as a Kansas Citian, a former Chiefs season ticket-holder and lifelong Chiefs fan,” said Quinton Lucas, the mayor of Kansas City, Missouri. “Business decisions are a reality and we all understand that, but Arrowhead Stadium is more — it’s family, tradition and a part of Kansas City we will never leave.”

Hunt has long said his preference was to renovate Arrowhead Stadium, which was beloved by his father and team founder, the late Lamar Hunt. It is considered one of the jewels of the NFL, alongside Lambeau Field in Green Bay, and is revered for its tailgating scene and home-field advantage; it currently holds the Guinness World Record for the loudest stadium roar.

This summer, Arrowhead Stadium will host six World Cup matches, including matches in the Round of 32 and quarterfinals.

Donovan told reporters Monday that the Hunt family believed Lamar Hunt would have backed their decision because “he would have wanted to increase and enhance the fans' experience."

Lamar Hunt established the Chiefs on Aug. 14, 1959. The team was originally based in Dallas and known as the Texans, but Hunt was convinced by then-Kansas City Mayor H. Roe Bartle to relocate the team to Missouri with promises of tripling the team's season-ticket sales and expanding the seating capacity of Municipal Stadium.

In 1972, the team moved into Arrowhead Stadium at the Truman Sports Complex just east of downtown Kansas City.

The stadium has undergone numerous renovations through the years, allowing it to stay relevant in a changing sports landscape. But there has been little economic development around the stadium, the facility itself is starting to show wear and tear, and there is a limit to the number of luxury suites and amenities that the franchise can utilize to help drive revenue.

While the Hunt family has long loved Arrowhead Stadium, it has warmed in recent years to the idea of a replacement.

Not only would it solve many of the shortcomings of the Chiefs' longtime home, a new facility with a fixed or retractable roof would allow them to use it year-round. That would mean the potential for hosting more concerts and events, college football bowl games, the Final Four and perhaps one of Lamar Hunt's long-held dreams: a Super Bowl.

“Chiefs fans on both sides of the state line can tell you that the success we've enjoyed together has elevated the profile of the entire region,” Clark Hunt said. “Sports are woven into the fabric of this community. If you travel and go to New York or Los Angeles or Europe or South America, you don't have to tell people which side of the state line you're from. You tell them you're from Kansas City, and there's a pretty good chance their response might have something to do with the Chiefs.”

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Tre White and Flory Bidunga each had 18 points and eight rebounds as No. 17 Kansas used balanced scoring to beat Davidson 90-61 on Monday night.

Six players finished in double figures for the Jayhawks (10-3), including all five starters. Bryson Tiller added 11 points and Jamari McDowell scored 10. Melvin Council Jr. had 10 points, nine assists and seven rebounds.

Kohl Rosario provided 13 points off the bench as Kansas shot 58% from the field, including 11 for 21 (52%) on 3-pointers. The Jayhawks had 27 assists on 37 baskets and outrebounded Davidson 42-31. White nabbed four of the team's 13 steals.

Roberts Blums was the only player in double figures for the Wildcats (8-4) with 13 points off the bench. Davidson was limited to 36% shooting from the floor and went 2 for 6 at the free-throw line.

Kansas played its second consecutive game without Darryn Peterson. The freshman star, who missed seven straight games earlier this season due to injury, is averaging 25 points in four games.

Kansas led by 19 before Davidson went on a 10-2 run to trim it to 36-25. The Wildcats hit six straight shots during one stretch, though they never cut the deficit to single digits. When White hit his fourth 3 of the first half, the lead was back up to 46-26.

Bidunga and Council each had 10.The second half didn't start much better for Davidson, as the Wildcats were outscored 7-2 in the first 2:51, leading coach Matt McKillup to exhaust his timeouts with 17:09 left.Kansas wasted no time distancing itself from the overmatched Wildcats. When Bidunga threw down an alley-oop dunk with 13:03 left in the opening half, the Jayhawks already had stretched the lead to 17-6.
