The Great Bend Panthers are 3-0 and looking to make their mark in 4A West. Like last year’s senior class, a lot of the guys on this team have been playing football together since they could walk, but that’s not the case for junior quarterback Maxson Smiley, who transferred in from Holcomb over the summer.
That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been welcomed by his new team though, as he says the locker room has welcomed him with open arms.
"It's been really good. I felt like I kinda came in and the guys accepted me well. It just started clicking. We were throwing after hell week every single day. Honestly the coolest part was after that first win against Scott City, seeing the fireworks being shot off. That was really surreal. Just knowing you have a community behind you and it's not just you for you. You have your teammates and we have a great coaching staff that I trust. I know they're going to do the best thing for us every week."
Even though he's new to Great Bend, the junior is not new to the position.
"I've been playing it (quarterback) since like, third grade, flag football with my dad. I mean, we used to go over plays, he'd make me remember them, I'd have to write them down. I don't know, a lot of guys looked up to me to remember those plays, so I just had to be a leader and do what I could for them."
The Panthers are on the road at Buhler tonight, Friday, September 25th, with coverage starting at 6:30 on B104.3 The Point.
