MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — President Donald Trump is headed back to the Presidents Cup for the second time. It's the fourth time this year for Trump to be at a golf tournament. He says the PGA Tour was nice enough to name him honorary chairman. It's a traditional role offered to every head of state in the country hosting the golf tournament. Trump attended the Presidents Cup at Liberty National in New Jersey in 2017 during his first term. He showed up at the end for the trophy presentation. This time he'll be on the first tee for the start of all 12 matches.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Oregon quarterback Dante Moore left the Coliseum field in an ambulance and wearing a neck brace after the Heisman Trophy candidate was hit roughly by Southern California linebacker Desman Stephens during a slide in the second quarter. Stephens’ hit resulted in his ejection and sparked a melee on the field while Moore was receiving immediate medical attention. The Ducks quarterback is an expected high pick in the next NFL draft. Oregon beat USC 41-27, and the Ducks were thrilled about an important win while also concerned about Moore and furious at Stephens.
NEW YORK (AP) — A’ja Wilson is in a class by herself, winning the AP's WNBA Player of the Year honors for the third straight year. Wilson received 15 of the 17 first place votes from a national media panel Sunday. She topped Olivia Miles of Minnesota as well as Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell of Indiana, who all had stellar seasons. It’s the fourth time that Wilson has won the AP Award, breaking a tie with Breanna Stewart for most all-time since the awards were first given in 2016. Angel Reese won AP Defensive Player of the Year for first time. Cheryl Reeve wins AP Coach of the Year for third time. Minnesota's Olivia Miles unanimous AP Rookie of the Year.
Florida proved the oddsmakers right, and then some, and established itself as a real threat in the Southeastern Conference in Jon Sumrall’s first season. The No. 21 Gators got out to a two-touchdown lead against fourth-ranked Mississippi and responded each time the Rebels got close in the second half before pulling away for a 52-28 victory. Mississippi had a big comedown from its emotional win over Lane Kiffin and LSU. The Gators were at their high-scoring best in The Swamp and showed they were worthy of having been installed as betting favorites against their top-five opponent.
MEDINAH, Ill. (AP) — The Internationals showed amazing fight Saturday in the Presidents Cup and lead for only the fourth time going into singles since these matches began in 1994. The Americans led in every match in the morning and afternoon. The Internationals fought back and kept a three-point lead. Min Woo Lee was part of two big rallies. Nick Taylor and Corey Conners had the biggest of all when they were 3 down after 10 holes and rallied to beat Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman. The Americans have won 10 straight. Missing from the afternoon action was Scottie Scheffler, who was benched.
The final day of Major League Baseball’s regular season is here, and two playoff spots are still up for grabs. The Philadelphia Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks are fighting for the National League’s final wild card, while the Houston Astros and Texas Rangers are in a race for the American League West. In the NL, if the Phillies can beat the Tampa Bay Rays, they’re in. The D-backs have to beat the San Diego Padres and hope the Phillies lose. A similar situation exists in the AL, where the Astros will clinch if they beat the Athletics. The Rangers need to beat the Minnesota Twins and hope the Astros lose.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Colin Simmons tied the program record with five sacks as top-ranked Texas held off No. 14 Tennessee 20-17 with President Donald Trump on hand in the Longhorns’ first visit to Neyland Stadium. Raleek Brown ran for 67 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 4-yarder with 5:41 left gave the Longhorns the winning margin in the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams. Texas had 10 sacks. Tennessee made it interesting late with a TD with 1:22 left and then recovering the onside kick. Jelani McDonald batted away Faizon Brandon’s pass to Travis Smith Jr. in the end zone on the final play.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jadan Baugh ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns, Duke Clark added 126 yards and a score on the ground and No. 21 Florida manhandled fourth-ranked Mississippi 52-28 to reach 4-0 for the first time since 2019. The Gators, 3 1/2-point favorites, proved Las Vegas oddsmakers right by leading from start to finish. They scored touchdowns on five consecutive drives in the second half. The Rebels insisted that last week’s victory against LSU, the one that spoiled former Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin’s return, was not their “Super Bowl.” But they failed to build off that emotional win. Florida had a lot to do with it.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have earned a wild-card rematch with the Chicago Cubs, and this time it will be in San Diego at packed and raucous Petco Park. The Padres beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 10-7 to wrap up the No. 4 seed in the National League playoffs. They’ll host every game in a best-of-three Wild Card Series at Petco Park against the fifth-seeded Cubs beginning Tuesday. The winner will face the NL Central champion Milwaukee Brewers in a best-of-five Division Series.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Cleveland Guardians wrapped up their third straight division title by beating the Kansas City Royals 11-5 while the Chicago White Sox lost 9-6 to the Colorado Rockies. Cleveland has won seven AL Central championships in the past 11 seasons. Six games back of the White Sox in mid-August, the Guardians threw everything they had at chasing down their division foes. Lucky them, the AL Central crown comes with a little break before their postseason begins. Manager Stephen Vogt said his team was “on fumes.”
