A long journey became reality Wednesday evening in Seattle, Washington, as former Barton Community College standout pitcher Josh Hendrickson made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park.
Hendrickson entered out of the Astros' bullpen in the third inning, inheriting a pair of runners before inducing Josh Naylor into an inning-ending groundout on just his second Major League pitch. Returning for the fourth, Hendrickson recorded his first Major League strikeout by fanning Cole Young before adding a second punchout of Will Wilson to complete a 1-2-3 frame. He went on to work two innings in his debut, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three.
Since making his debut, Hendrickson returned to the mound Friday night in a leverage situation against the Athletics, inducing an inning-ending double-play in two-thirds of a scoreless inning. The appearance closed his first Major League regular season with a 3.38 ERA across 2.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out three without issuing a walk.
With Houston clinching the AL West Division title on the final day of the regular season, Hendrickson now awaits word on whether he will be part of the Astros' postseason roster for the best-of-three American League Wild Card Series against the Chicago White Sox beginning Tuesday afternoon.
The southpaw became the sixth former Barton Cougar to reach the Major League level and the second to make his debut during the 2026 season. He joins New York Mets starting pitcher Zac Thornton, who received his first call to the Majors in May and closed out his rookie campaign Thursday afternoon against the Texas Rangers.
The road to the Major Leagues was anything but direct for the Wellard, Australia native, whose professional journey began after being selected by the Kansas City Royals in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft following his lone season at Barton. Hendrickson instead continued his collegiate career at the University of San Diego before being selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 38th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.
Hendrickson spent four seasons in the Phillies organization before his path eventually took him outside affiliated baseball. After pitching for the Kansas City Monarchs in 2025, the left-hander earned another opportunity when the Astros signed him in April, returning Hendrickson to affiliated baseball and beginning the final leg of his journey to the Majors.
The lefty made the most of the opportunity, spending the 2026 season with Triple-A Sugar Land Space Cowboys before earning his call to the Majors. The left-hander made 23 appearances, including 19 starts, posting a 9-7 record with a 4.75 ERA while striking out 106 across 113.2 innings.
Before beginning his professional journey, Hendrickson spent the 2018 season on the Hill, putting together one of the top pitching campaigns in Barton history. The left-hander posted an 11-3 record with a 2.52 ERA across 96.1 innings, striking out 125 while issuing just 20 walks over 16 starts.
Hendrickson led the Cougars in victories, innings pitched and strikeouts, with his 11 wins tying for the first on Barton's single-season chart, while his 96.1 innings ranked first and 125 strikeouts stood second. His performance earned second-team All-KJCCC West honors.
Hendrickson also played a key role in Barton's historic postseason run, helping the Cougars capture the program's first Region 6/Central District championship and earn its lone berth in the NJCAA Division I World Series.
