The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service in Wichita indicate up to an inch and a half of snow may fall on Barton County by Friday evening. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said his deputies worry less about accumulation in the ditches and more about what happens to road surfaces.

"I don't care if it's an inch or five inches: how quickly does it leave the roadway?" he said. "If you get snowpack on the roadway, that's when you start having problems. If you have loose snow on the roadway and it gets cleared off pretty quickly, it's not that big of a deal for us."

Ambient temperatures before and after the snow also affect road conditions. Lows will hover around the freezing mark on Friday before rebounding to the low 40s on Saturday. Bellendir said a worst-case scenario can be for fresh snow to get snow-packed on the road. It gets polished and slicker as more cars drive over it. Drivers in four-wheel vehicles may get a false sense of security.

"The problem is you can take off and get going, and you're not going to get stuck, but that doesn't help your stopping distance at all," said Bellendir. "You can build up more speed more quickly and more easily than you could with just a rear-wheel drive car, but you can't get stopped."

Barton County and north is expected to receive a trace to two inches of snowfall through Friday. The southwest corner of the state could see up to four inches. Rain and snow are again expected Sunday night into Monday.

"Yes, it's coming," Bellendir said. "Please slow down. Drive safely. Snow is better than ice. And if we do start getting snowpack on the roadway, you have to slow down. The coefficient of friction on the highway drops to about nothing and you have no stopping ability."

BELLENDIR: Four-wheel drives can still be dangerous on ice

Nothing beats a bowl of hot soup on a cold, snowy day. The 6th Annual Ellinwood EMS Chili Cook Off nearly had it timed right. Usually a battle of the badges, EMS Director Brittney Bailey said this year the public is invited to compete.

"It is the first year we're allowing the public to also compete against their favorite first responders," she said. "We have 14 teams and we'll be at the Parish Center in Ellinwood. Along with that, we have a great raffle with more than 60 prizes. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Advance meal tickets are still available for $8, and that's all you can eat. Kids 5 and under eat free. It's $10 at the door. We're excited to see everybody this Sunday."

The Eagle Med 10 helicopter out of Great Bend will also make an appearance in the empty lot north of Minnis Chapel at Second and Main. Curious attendees can stop and check out the chopper and meet Eagle Med staff. 

The Chili Cook Off will go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Parish Center, 110 W. 2nd Street in Ellinwood. All proceeds from the event will go toward the purchase of a new rescue vehicle.

Issues with the SRCA Dragstrip in Great Bend have been ongoing for the
past two and half years. Following a $1.6 million reconstruction of the
dragstrip in May 2021, there have been problems with the surface meeting
required standards for racing. The project was part of a Kansas Department of
Transportation Cost Share program, where the city approved Suchy Construction
as the contractor.

The SRCA Board canceled their race season last year because
they deemed the track unsafe. 

City Administrator Brandon Anderson said in April
2021, the council approved a loan to the SRCA for retaining walls and new time
systems. The terms of the loan call for annual payments on Dec. 31.


"Since the dragstrip is not operating, the SRCA's ability to generate the funds to make the 2023 payment have been impaired," said Anderson. "SRCA is asking to defer this payment during the pendency of the legal actions concerning the dragstrip."

The Great Bend City Council approved the request to defer SRCA’s loan payments.
In December, the operational agreement with the SRCA to maintain the track and
facility switched over to the city’s responsibility since the track is not
operating. 


The legal issue to determine responsibility on the track’s issues is awaiting
arbitration. Administration did not expect arbitration to begin until June
2024.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

New Year celebrations ended a little early for a Great Bend family dealing with a hit-and-run accident in front of their home. At approximately 11:05 p.m. on New Year's Eve, a red Ford Fiesta parked in front of a home in the 2500 block of 17th Street was struck by an unknown vehicle. Nakita Adame, owner of the Fiesta, has been on a mission to find information since.

"It was definitely not on our list of things to do or the way to spend our last couple of days off at home with the kids," she said. "They kind of got the brunt end of the deal being stuck in the car driving around with us. We've driven around looking around for any cars that are parked that might be wrecked."

Adame said speeding cars are always an issue in that stretch of 17th Street. Traffic is often reduced to one car at a time since cars are parked on both sides of the street. Nakita heard the speeding car but did not realize the Fiesta had been struck.

"My husband heard the crash," she said. "To me, it didn't register as a 'I need to go check a vehicle' kind of a noise, but he happened to peek out the window just to see and had seen a car right after that turning right onto Washington. He said it looked like they were dragging something.

An early lead was promising. A neighbor had used the DoorDash food delivery service. The Adames found white paint transfer on their vehicle, and the DoorDash employee was driving a white Toyota Prius. The Adames went to businesses along Main Street to try and track the driver's movements. Wednesday afternoon, officers with the Great Bend Police Department were able to confirm the Prius was not involved in the crash.

"We do feel really bad that we put him out there like that but we tried to make contact with him before we did," Adame said. "We're thankful he was able to reach out to us and clear things up so quickly."

With that driver cleared, a neighbor rechecked her cameras and found more video around the time of the accident that features a slightly darker vehicle.

"It is a smaller car," Adame said. "It's not a truck or an SUV. It's definitely a smaller car. When you compare the videos, the Prius was, you can tell, a very bright, light color. The car flying by, when you pause it put it in slow motion, it appears to be a darker-colored car. We don't even know that."

The suspect vehicle was headed westbound on 17th Street, eventually turning north onto Washington. The Adames are hopeful to find a car that likely has front-end, driver's-side damage and red paint transfer. No significant pieces of the the hit-and-run vehicle were left behind though the impact pushed back the Fiesta approximately 10 feet.

The Fiesta belonged to Adame's mother-in-law, but had recently become a primary source of transportation for the family. Because insurance had not been switched from liability, the Adame's are hopeful to find the driver so the accident can be handled properly. Until then, Adame has been grateful for neighbors and community members who have helped.

"It was super cool, all the help from all the neighbors who have been gracious enough to check their cameras multiple times and make sure there's nothing they can see," she said. "It's been really nice to see that people care and they want to help."

Hoisington High School honor roll students (fall 2023)

In his update Tuesday night at the Great Bend City Council meeting, City
Administrator Brandon Anderson said he was thankful for the moisture the area
has received, but the downside is the city is starting to see issues with
potholes. 

As snow and ice melts, it seeps into the cracks of the asphalt,
freezes again and expands, causing shifts in the pavement and damages.


"We continue to stress to individuals to call those in," said Anderson. "We need to know where they are. Staff, as it dries out enough to work on those, is working on those potholes. We ask citizens to bear with us."

In May 2021, the city council approved the purchase of a $162,000 ProPatch
truck, specifically designed to patch potholes and cracks. The new model at the
time, replaced the 1995 model, and was bought using capital outlay, special
street funds.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Winter time blues for potholes, Great Bend staff aware

Try as they may, staff at the Brit Spaugh Zoo in Great Bend could not get Luke, a male lion, to get along with female lions Amana and Sauda. The result was a constant switch of the groups in the one existing exhibit. Zoo Curator Ashley Burdick said the Great Bend Zoological Society is helping staff create a second lion exhibit to allow all the cats more time outdoors and increase safety for zookeepers.

"We are just waiting for the fencing to be finished on it," Burdick said. "They just have the gates to get in and out for a vehicle and a keeper to finish up on there, and then we have to add a little bit of dirt work and some hot wire, then it should be ready. We will have to add some sidewalk and some public fencing around the area. My hope is that, by spring, we'll have it fully ready for people to come see it."

Enzo the tamandua arrived at the zoo in late 2021 but has remained largely off-exhibit. Last December, the zoo received a temporary guest in the form of a Lucia, a two-toed sloth from Wright Park Zoo in Dodge City. They could also make a more public appearance in 2024 as the weather heats up.

"Part of our money for the qualify of life tax, our hope is to use that this year to open that area up for the public so that, this summer, when it's warmer for those two to be out, people can see them in their exhibit," said Burdick.

Between 2023 and 2031, the zoo will be allocated $30,000 each year from the qualify of life sales tax. That amounts to $270,000 over the nine-year period.

Brit Spaugh Zoo continues exhibit updates into New Year

The Shafer Gallery will host a closing reception for its “Eclectic Selections” exhibit from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Jan. 13 in the Gallery and will feature light refreshments and a gallery talk by Shafer Gallery Community Engagement Coordinator Richard Lartz. Admission is free.

The show includes art from the gallery’s permanent collection, which Lartz curated. Shafer Gallery Director Alyssa Bliven said the permanent collection has been built over the years. The Gallery has purchased certain pieces and generous art enthusiasts and artists have donated others.

“Richard did a wonderful job curating this show,” she said. “I couldn’t be happier with how it’s turned out. It’s a diverse collection that encompasses the variety of artistic styles and mediums present in our permanent collection. While the proverbial ‘kitchen sink’ wasn’t included, the show does feature a remarkable oil on canvas painting of a sink titled ‘Old Friend’ by Jinx Wright. We also have a small collection of pieces by an amazing local artist, Bev Simonson.”

The democratic process was in full force in Russell County ahead of last November's general election. Now the search for two new commissioners is underway. County Clerk Kristi Whitman said everything began with a citizen's petition to change the size of the Russell County Commission. 

"A citizen in the city of Russell started a petition to go from three to five," she said. "She had enough signatures for that question to go on the ballot last November, and it passed. The commissioners had to redistrict for the five commission districts."

Jeannine Byers-Long, a realtor in Russell, collected signatures from more than five percent of registered voters. In November, 740 voters, or nearly 56 percent, said yes to the change, compared to 584 votes against. The county's geographic information systems department worked with the three current commissioners to create new maps featuring five districts. After discussion, a resolution passed by the commission made those changes official in December.

Now party committees are seeking applications to fill the two new commission spots in Districts 4 and 5. Interested parties must reside in those districts. Republican candidates may submit applications to Dan Krug, party chair, by Jan. 14. Democratic candidates may submit applications to Charma Craven by Jan. 22.

The parties will select candidates for both of the new districts. Those candidates will be on the General Election ballot in November.

CAMPBELL: K-State Fertilizer research report – available online

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) announced their latest round of approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance. Along with K-96 Highway in Rush County, U.S. 50 Highway in Stafford County, K-96 to the west of Great Bend was selected.

KDOT Public Affairs Manager Tim Potter said K-96 will receive a milling and overlay from the Rush/Barton county line to the west city limits of Great Bend.

"We anticipate beginning this project this spring, possibly early May," said Potter. "With that possible timing for the start of the work, we would hope to complete the work around July. I do want to note that timeline is tentative until the details can be fully worked out."

The $3.4 million project will consist of 13.6 miles of K-96, and Venture Corporation will be the contractor.

The portion of K-96 was selected as part of a routine review and inspection of highways due to the highway's wear. KDOT said the last major work on that section was around 2016.

Also, 15 miles of U.S. 50 Highway, from the Edwards/Stafford county line east to the U.S. 281 Highway/U.S. 50 junction, will receive a $4.8 million mill and overlay.

In Rush County, 14.9 miles of K-96 will receive a mill and overlay. Venture will handle the $4.6 million from just east of the U.S. 183/K-96 junction east to the Rush/Barton county line.

On Sunday, Dec. 31 at about 1:16 a.m., officers of the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to Cervs, 1000 Main Street, in reference to an alarm. Officers found a broken glass door on the side of the building. Officers entered the building to check for suspects or anyone needing help. Officers did not find anyone inside the building but found evidence of a burglary, theft and criminal damage to property. 

Officers on scene advised the other officers to check the area for suspects and they also advised other officers of the stolen items to help locate the suspect. One of the Great Bend Police officer's located a white male walking a few blocks from the burglary. The officer contacted the subject. The officer found the stolen items from Cervs on the suspect's person. 

John Arthur DeBeau, age 30, was arrested and he was booked at Barton County Jail for burglary and criminal damage to property with a $20,000 bond.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (1/3)

The City of Great Bend is planning on accepting bids for a large
improvement project at Brit Spaugh Park on Jan. 25. The project
includes a basketball court, four pickleball courts, two mini soccer pitches,
playground and a restroom facility on the south side of the park. 

Great Bend
Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said he expects bid proposals to be
returned by late February for the project that includes lighting and
fencing.


"In between the courts, there will be covered bleachers on both sides," said Burns. "If we had a tournament, people would be able to sit and watch that. Farther to the north, there will be food truck parking on the east. A cover area will be there so people can order and sit with some picnic tables. There will be a power unit there that these food trucks can plug into."

While the Brit Spaugh Park project will be partly funded through the .15%
quality of life sales tax and financial assistance has been pledged by the Great Bend Recreation Commission and Harms Trust, City Administrator Brandon Anderson said outside
funding will be needed for the estimated $2.1 million improvements if the city
wants to complete the project sooner rather than later.


"This is a really exciting project, but unfortunately like a lot of other projects, right now it's coming in higher than we anticipated," said Anderson. "As we take that quality of life money and try to continue to do the projects we're working on, we may not be able to tackle this one quite as quickly as we'd like to unless we're able to reach out and find assistance with it."

The horseshoe pits will be relocated to the north of the Kansas National Guard Armory.

The quality of life sales tax is expected to generate $635,000 in the 2024
