With basketball, volleyball, and wrestling, not to mention this year's indoor graduation at Great Bend High School, the gymnasium floor at the school gets used a lot. Activities Director Matt Westerhaus said, based on photos in the trophy case, the floor has probably not been completely refinished in approximately 20 years. Monday evening, the USD 428 Board of Education approved a new finish.
"Typically, I think, you would resand the floor every about 12-15 years, so we're probably a little overdue in getting that done," Westerhaus said. "Along with that, they'll sand all the way down and there will be a new design on the floor."
Westerhaus said he worked with the high school basketball and volleyball coaches before choosing a new design. Assistant Superintendent John Popp said Patterson Construction from La Crosse submitted the lone bid for the work at $29,640.
"This should be completed this summer," he said. "We've talked to them previously. They were on tab to do it. We knew they were going to bid. We didn't know if we were going to get any other bids and we did not. This is a very good price for the project."
Westerhaus said the project should be completed in July.
