Pawnee County Sheriff Scott King took time to remind all citizens to be
on the lookout for common scams. King said oftentimes an unknown person will
contact a potential scam victim via telephone or email, claiming to be with law
enforcement, Social Security, IRS or Sweepstakes. 

The sheriff suggests for
residents to simply hang up the phone.


"We try to provide education for people," said King. "Be cautious. If you don't think it's right then just hang up."

King recalled going to the post office in Larned and a woman standing in line was
telling him how she had to send $1,200 cash to someone that called her. King
said sometimes the older generation’s kindness hurts them, trying to help
everyone.


"Some of the older citizens don't want to be rude," said King. "They don't want to hang up the phone because they still have the landline. Someone's been able to get their number out of the phone book. The last sorority I talked to I told them to just hang up. They looked a little sheepish like we just don't know how to hang up."

Never send money to others using online payment systems unless they are your
friends or family. King encouraged citizens to contact law enforcement if they
have been a victim of a scam.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (1/5 - 1/7)

Years ago, Great Bend retail businesses determined they needed a winter
sale to get rid of winter items and start making room for spring items. Names
like icy sidewalk sale, cabin fever reliever sale and winter big bag sale have
all been used, but this year’s “Beat the Winter Blues Sale” will take place Saturday, Jan. 13. 

Great Bend Community Coordinator Christina Hayes said
this year Great Bend Alive, the city’s Main Street organization, is hosting a
snowball drop at the Crest Theater on Lakin Avenue.


"They are going to drop a whole bunch of "snowballs" that are maybe Styrofoam or squishy, bouncy balls," said Hayes. "Each ball will have a number it, and you will get to exchange it for a deal or prize. There will be 300 to 500 of them dropped inside the Crest."

Beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Crest, a pop-up shop and cocoa station will be
set up and the snowball drop will start at 10:15 a.m. Citizens can also ride
the Dolly Trolley from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. 

Shoppers can take advantage of participating
businesses’ special deals throughout the day.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

LANE COUNTY —Authorities are working to determine the cause of a fire at the grocery store in Dighton.

According to a media release from the city of Dighton, K&amp;J Foods, 101 West Long Street, was destroyed in a fire on Saturday.

Firefighters battled the fire and warned residents that the northeast section of town was filling with the dangerous smoke. The Catholic Hall and the 4-H building were opened for residents to seek shelter to avoid breathing in the smoke.&nbsp; 

The Fire Chief urged residents on the northeast side of town to consider shutting off heating system, that draw outside air in, due to the heavy smoke from the fire.&nbsp; There were no injuries reported.

Fire destroys grocery store in Dighton

Something I recently read discussed how too much information paralyzes humans’ ability to act. The essay focused on vast details, general and specific, available on the internet to most Americans. The author confirmed something I’d guessed--a click of a button immediately delivers copious feedback that overwhelms readers. Ironically, that same info often needs a rewrite after the source investigates further. Nothing like a trip to the market and the return home to find out you don’t have the right product.

Personally, I’m most overwhelmed by product choices at the grocery store. In days of yore, shopping rarely resulted in fried brains—an untrue statement these days. Check out the pharmaceutical aisle. Plan extra time to read packaging small print to determine exactly what you’re buying. I needed eye drops. This turned into multiple-choice exam that involved more than the expected three potential answers. I read through ingredient lists of at least six different companies to determine what I needed. The pain-killer section compounded the headache building behind my eyes.

One side of the aisle in this section contains a minimum of four to five shelves stacked higher than my nearly six-foot frame, all filled with medications designed to address human pain. You can select aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or something else. Be sure to read every detail because some interact with this or cause that. Others have protective coatings to prevent stomach and intestinal issues. In our house, this gets complicated because each of our bodies handles the same product differently. To make matters more difficult, you have to know what delivery system you want for pain relief: fast or slow-release tablets, capsules, syrup, suppositories, or analgesic cream? To complicate matters, you can buy various patches to apply to specific body parts for direct delivery to said site.

If the pharmaceutical aisle hasn’t exhausted your brain, truck over to the dairy aisle. Just the milk section demands a dozen fast decisions. What kind of container do you prefer—plastic or a wax-coated paper product? Do you want pints, quarts, half gallons, or gallons of moo juice? Do you want whole milk or 1 or 2 percent? To complicate matters, options include almond, coconut, or oat milks.

Same aisle, different case: selecting butter demands intense focus. Generic or brand name? Local or delivered from Ireland with a giant carbon foot print? Flavored or regular? Salted or unsalted? In ¼ pound cubes or pound size rectangles? In specialty stores, you’ll find pound-size balls of Amish butter wrapped in wax paper. What started as a quick trip to the market ends up taking forever as you weigh options and calculate expense.

Due to info overload, quick trips to the market don’t exist. For that matter, don’t count on a quick trip to the Quick Trip. Even in stores intended to collect money fast, you have to choose from among several similar products.

As much as I love headache-free cooking with interesting ingredients, this overload leaves me nostalgic for old-time neighborhood markets that offered one choice of everything. All you had to decide was how much you could afford.

Free woodcarving class in Great Bend

The
drought monitor report as of January 2 shows a continued marked
improvement.&nbsp; Over 20% od the state is
out of drought.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (January 9 to 13) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of leaning to below normal
temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (January 11
to 17) indicates a continued 50 to 70% chance of leaning below normal for temperatures
and normal to a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; This is an encouraging change in the moisture
trend.&nbsp; We need to see how the week’s
forecasted snowfall is.

Many have the idea that during this
time of year, crop producers can simply sit back and take it easy.&nbsp; While it may slow down a bit, there is still
plenty to do and plan for.&nbsp; Today, what
are good producers doing winter.

those with the 2024 winter wheat crop in the ground will start to pay close
attention as we move into February, days get longer, and temperatures start to
warm.&nbsp; They need to evaluate the wheat
stand, estimate the number of tillers, and get a good idea of soil profile

drought monitor report as of January 2 shows a continued marked
improvement.&nbsp; Over 20% od the state is
out of drought.&nbsp; The six to ten-day
outlook (January 9 to 13) indicates a 50 to 60% chance of leaning to below normal
temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; The eight to fourteen-day outlook (January 11
to 17) indicates a continued 50 to 70% chance of leaning below normal for temperatures
and normal to a 33 to 40% chance of above normal precipitation.&nbsp; This is an encouraging change in the moisture
trend.&nbsp; We need to see how the week’s
forecasted snowfall is.Many have the idea that during this
time of year, crop producers can simply sit back and take it easy.&nbsp; While it may slow down a bit, there is still
plenty to do and plan for.&nbsp; Today, what
are good producers doing winter.·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,
those with the 2024 winter wheat crop in the ground will start to pay close
attention as we move into February, days get longer, and temperatures start to

Great Bend Eco Devo offering 1st entrepreneurship class for free

Several years have passed since the Barton County Sheriff's Office last hosted a Kids' Camp for youth who may be interested in pursuing a job in law enforcement. Sheriff Brian Bellendir said plans are in the works to restart the camp this May.

"We kind of give them a mini law-enforcement training course," he said, "show them how to fingerpint, we'll let them shot some rifles out on the range, show them how the patrol cars and radios work, crime scene investigation, and all that kind of stuff."

Previous camps have been for a limited number of students age 8-14 years, but Bellendir said concrete plans for the reboot are still in the works. Interest in law enforcement can extend well beyond just the guys in patrol cars.

"There's the forensics stuff, there's lab stuff, there's DNA, there's blood splatter," said Bellendir. "There is just an infinite amount of stuff that is now used in law enforcement and forensics."

Bellendir said the camp will likely last a day or two. His office will release more details as the potential camp date nears.

Golden Belt Community Foundation (GBCF) provides local high school and college students with a free scholarship application review process. The goal is simple, to connect students with donors providing financial assistance for education. Last year the Foundation awarded over $65,000 to students in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties.

The deadline for all available scholarships is March 15, 2024. Some funds are designated for students that are not receiving substantial financial aid, which cannot be determined until after colleges, high schools, or merit-based scholarships have been awarded.

The Foundation also has scholarship funds available to students attending vocational schools or colleges with other types of educational delivery methods. Students throughout Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford County are invited to apply online.

Golden Belt Community Foundation 2024-2025 scholarship applications

We are only one week into the new year and it’s already a whirlwind of activity!

We started off with a training for our 4-H2O Ambassadors and an activity at the Hays Public Library. The 4-H2O Ambassadors are a group of youth across Barton and Ellis County with an interest in learning about water management, water conservation, and related water issues. They learn about these areas and to facilitate activities for public events. The ambassadors will meet again on January 20 at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center for their second training. We have five returning ambassadors and five new ones for 2024. I so appreciate watching their confidence and presentation skills grow throughout the year.

Next week begins one of my favorite partnerships with USD 428 in Great Bend Reads! I will have the opportunity to share a lesson related to their current book, “The Wild Robot” and a little about 4-H! It does make for a couple of crazy weeks but I very much appreciate the interaction with students, teachers, and staff.

We are also in the final planning for 4-H Club Day which will be held on Sunday, February 4 at Ellinwood. 4-H Club Day is an opportunity for 4-H youth to present a demonstration or illustrated talk, a musical selection, practice their extemporaneous speaking, or work together as a club for a skit or model meeting. The public is invited to watch these young people compete and receive feedback from a judge.

Speaking of judges, we are already working at scheduling judges for the county fairs! I know it seems a long way off but July schedules fill up fast and we like to rotate through some of the best qualified judges available. If you have interest in serving as a judge for another county, please let me know and I’ll provide you with more information. We would love to have volunteers for fair superintendents and in many other roles also!

4-H members are already hard at work setting project goals, planning learning activities and events, and practicing their projects. If you know a 4-H member, ask them about their favorite project or one of their project goals for this year.

Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education (BOE) members include Jacquie Disque, president, Aaron Emerson, vice-president, Chad Burroughs, and Deanna Essmiller. Effective January 8, Emerson will begin a second term while Karen Lindberg, Randy Wetzel, and Sara Williams will join the BOE to replace retiring members, Lori Reneau, Chris Umphres, and Susan Young.

Members are elected at large to serve a four-year term. These community leaders volunteer hundreds of cumulative hours attending meetings, reading reports, and discussing plans and programs to support educational achievement in Great Bend Public Schools.

“Our board members are advocates for public education and compassionate leaders,” said Khris Thexton, USD 428 superintendent. “Not only do they keep our district running, but their thoughtful service also shapes the future for our students and community.”

A board member’s responsibility goes beyond monthly board meetings. In Great Bend, BOE members oversee district operations for roughly 2,900 students, 700 employees, and 13 buildings.

“We are fortunate to have this dedicated group of individuals who are engaged in our schools, connected with the community, and advocate for student success locally and with legislators and policymakers across the State,” said Thexton.

USD 428 thanks board during School Board Appreciation Month

Women from across Kansas will gather at the 20th Women Managing the Farm Conference in Manhattan, Kansas, February 14-16, 2024. The conference, which began in 2005, will feature nationally renowned keynote speakers, in-depth breakout sessions, and the opportunity for women to network with other farmers, rural business leaders and landowners.&nbsp;

“We are so excited to be hosting our 20th conference this year,” said Sandra Wick, co-chair of the Women Managing the Farm conference planning committee. “WMF is a fantastic event that provides women with the necessary skills, resources and knowledge for success in a competitive agricultural landscape.”

Building on the success of the past conferences, the 2024 edition will Rise to new heights. Keynote presentations will be given by Mark Mayfield, Kim Bremmer and Terrain economist Matt Roberts. The attendees will also be treated to a Master Farmers and Homemakers panel.

Conference sessions are designed to keep women up to date on the latest advancements in agriculture and thriving within their rural communities. During the two-day conference, attendees will select from breakout sessions covering many topics, including farm financial planning, production agriculture, balancing farm and life responsibilities, direct-to-consumer and retail businesses as well as transition planning.&nbsp;

Women from across the state are invited to attend this special 20th anniversary conference. And to extend the opportunity to attend to as many people as possible, Women Managing the Farm is organizing six pre-conference tours in The Sunflower State Showcase. In partnership with local K-State Research &amp; Extension units, attendees will have the ability to ride a van from their corner of the state and stop at pre-selected tour locations on their way to Manhattan.

“Whether you are involved in on-farm production, are an off-farm landowner or part of the agriculture industry as a business professional, WMF has content for every woman involved in ag,” said Lori Rogge, co-chair of the Women Managing the Farm conference planning committee.

Early registration runs through January 18, 2024, at $175, with scholarships available for those who apply before that deadline. A student rate of $75 for any high school or college students will also be offered this year. After January 18, registration is $200. Additional pre-conference sessions are available for $25, including a session on emotional wellness and the pre-conference tours.

Eagle Radio's news week in review

Three species are included in this year's Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) review of state endangered, threatened, or species-in-need-of-conservation (SINC) lists. The reviews, which take place every five years, begin with a petition to change listings. A seven-person committee will hold meetings at five locations, including the Kansas Wetlands Education Center in February. KDWP Assistant Director of Ecological Services Jordan Hofmeier said threatened species carry more protection than SINC species.

"Threatened and endangered species are protected from take, but they also have habitat protections as well," he said. "SINC species are just protected from individual take. They do not carry the habitat protection that a threatened species does."

On the review list this year are the shoal chub, broad-headed skink, and northern map turtle. A recent survey conducted by Emporia State University found record numbers of the turtles in Kansas. Petitions have asked that all three species be removed from the threatened species list and moved to the SINC list.

"It's kind of the same story for both the shoal chub and the broad-headed skink," said Hofmeier. "We've had some increased efforts to try and find those species, and with improved methods and sampling techniques, we've had much better luck finding them. They're not nearly as rare as previously thought."

Informational meetings at each site will last two hours. After a 90-day public comment period, the Wildlife and Parks Commission will make a ruling at a future public hearing. The KWEC meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Here’s a New Year’s Resolution for the Kansas Legislature:&nbsp; no more wasting our time and money on election conspiracy theories.&nbsp; In September and October of 2023, Senator Mike Thompson and others hosted hearings featuring speakers peddling truly insane speculations.&nbsp; These included the contention–really–that Italy and the Vatican have infiltrated Kansas elections by manipulating military satellites.&nbsp; Other speakers were linked to QAnon, the deranged, violent, and deeply anti-Semitic conspiracy theory. Under questioning, these speakers admitted that they had no actual knowledge of how elections are conducted in Kansas.&nbsp; Many of the conspiracy theorists relied on the idea that Kansas election equipment is connected to the Internet, which is false and easily disproved.&nbsp;Slate&nbsp;dubbed this, “The Election Denialist Roadshow.” &nbsp; Some Republicans actually believe this nonsense, while others know better but play along for fear of getting primaried.

Satellites, “ballot harvesting,” and George Soros are not legitimate concerns, but there are a few things that would improve Kansas elections.&nbsp; A serious election security bill would begin by properly updating the registration rolls.&nbsp; While there is no evidence of ballots being cast in the name of dead people here, and it is extremely rare elsewhere in the U.S., good recordkeeping still calls for the rolls to be current.&nbsp; Voters rarely notify election authorities that they have moved or that a loved one has passed away.&nbsp; New death certificates along with change-of-address filings at the Post Office can be quite helpful here.&nbsp; A nonpartisan, multi-state system called ERIC shares this data across state lines. ERIC has also been targeted by conspiracy theorists, but this should not affect policymaking.

Additional challenges include signature matches, now the usual way to validate ballots.&nbsp; Many signatures are now taken on a digital pad rather than with a pen and paper, and many people make only a squiggly line on those rather than actually signing.&nbsp; In addition to setting standards for signatures, the bill should also require all digital voting machines to print a piece of paper for each ballot.&nbsp; These can be inspected by the voter before being cast in the ballot box, and also used for both machine and hand recounts, when necessary.&nbsp; Even more crucial are better pay and training for poll workers.&nbsp; In today’s toxic political environment, providing for the security of election workers is also vital–some have received death threats.

On the other hand, certain so-called “election security” measures are really just sleazy political tactics.&nbsp; First and foremost is voter “caging,” targeting certain voters (usually people of color living in urban areas) and sending them postcards that must be completed and returned or the voter is removed from the rolls.&nbsp; With most of us overwhelmed with junk mail, these often get tossed out by mistake.&nbsp; The tactic is a blatant attempt to target certain voters and remove them from the rolls.&nbsp; A good election security bill would include a strong, enforceable ban on caging.

A good bill would also ban the de-registration of any voter based on name duplicates alone.&nbsp; These do not target actual fraud but rather people who are likely to have similar names.&nbsp; African-American, Latinx, and Asian-American voters are more likely to have similar names than are white non-Hispanic voters, and the tactic is another blatant attempt to de-register targeted groups of people.

Kansas elections could indeed be better, but deranged conspiracy theories and legislative sideshows are not the answer.&nbsp; Actual election experts have a number of thoughtful ideas that would make a welcome alternative to the noise and the nonsense.

Under questioning, these speakers admitted that they had no actual knowledge of how elections are conducted in Kansas.&nbsp; Many of the conspiracy theorists relied on the idea that Kansas election equipment is connected to the Internet, which is false and easily disproved.&nbsp;Slate&nbsp;dubbed this, “The Election Denialist Roadshow.” &nbsp; Some Republicans actually believe this nonsense, while others know better but play along for fear of getting primaried.Satellites, “ballot harvesting,” and George Soros are not legitimate concerns, but there are a few things that would improve Kansas elections.&nbsp; A serious election security bill would begin by properly updating the registration rolls.&nbsp; While there is no evidence of ballots being cast in the name of dead people here, and it is extremely rare elsewhere in the U.S., good recordkeeping still calls for the rolls to be current.&nbsp; Voters rarely notify election authorities that they have moved or that a loved one has passed away.&nbsp; New death certificates along with change-of-address filings at the Post Office can be quite helpful here.&nbsp; A nonpartisan, multi-state system called ERIC shares this data across state lines. ERIC has also been targeted by conspiracy theorists, but this should not affect policymaking.Additional challenges include signature matches, now the usual way to validate ballots.&nbsp; Many signatures are now taken on a digital pad rather than with a pen and paper, and many people make only a squiggly line on those rather than actually signing.&nbsp; In addition to setting standards for signatures, the bill should also require all digital voting machines to print a piece of paper for each ballot.&nbsp; These can be inspected by the voter before being cast in the ballot box, and also used for both machine and hand recounts, when necessary.&nbsp; Even more crucial are better pay and training for poll workers.&nbsp; In today’s toxic political environment, providing for the security of election workers is also vital–some have received death threats.On the other hand, certain so-called “election security” measures are really just sleazy political tactics.&nbsp; First and foremost is voter “caging,” targeting certain voters (usually people of color living in urban areas) and sending them postcards that must be completed and returned or the voter is removed from the rolls.&nbsp; With most of us overwhelmed with junk mail, these often get tossed out by mistake.&nbsp; The tactic is a blatant attempt to target certain voters and remove them from the rolls.&nbsp; A good election security bill would include a strong, enforceable ban on caging.A good bill would also ban the de-registration of any voter based on name duplicates alone.&nbsp; These do not target actual fraud but rather people who are likely to have similar names.&nbsp; African-American, Latinx, and Asian-American voters are more likely to have similar names than are white non-Hispanic voters, and the tactic is another blatant attempt to de-register targeted groups of people.Kansas elections could indeed be better, but deranged conspiracy theories and legislative sideshows are not the answer.&nbsp; Actual election experts have a number of thoughtful ideas that would make a welcome alternative to the noise and the nonsense.
