KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Bobby Witt Jr. homered twice as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 10-3 for their fifth straight win on Tuesday night.

Maikel Garcia led off the first with a triple and scored on Witt’s infield hit. Witt stole second and scored when Salvador Perez hit a single to right.

After Kyle Isbel and Garcia singled in the second, Witt hit Casey Mize’s splitter 468 feet — the farthest of his career — into the upper deck fountains.

“I didn’t really watch it,” Witt said. “I just kind of hit it and started running, but yeah, it felt good.”

“That’s probably one of the longest balls I’ve ever seen hit,” said Royals starting pitcher Alec Marsh. “Unbelievable. He’s a generational talent. You think you’d get used to it being around him every day, and then he does something new that you haven’t seen and it’s just ‘wow.’ The wow factor is unbelievable.”

Mize (1-3) surrendered six runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings, the shortest outing of his career.

“They were taking really good swings off him,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He threw some chase pitches that got hit for base hits. He threw some pitches in the strike zone that got hit hard. It just wasn’t his day.”

Garcia drove an RBI triple to right and scored on Witt’s third-inning sacrifice fly to give the Royals an 8-0 lead. Garcia scored three runs while matching a career best with four hits, extending his hitting streak to nine games.

“Maikel setting the tone kind of gave me excitement,” Witt said. “He’s doing the job, I’ve got to do my part.”

Witt added a solo homer leading off the sixth. It was his fourth multihomer game as he matched a career best with six RBIs.

In the seventh, Hunter Renfroe’s fourth homer of the season capped the scoring.

Kansas City collected six extra-base hits and has at least one extra-base hit in all 50 games this year, one game shy of their franchise record set in 1978.

Marsh (4-1) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings. The Royals have won all but one of his eight starts.

“Anytime we play like that we’re going to win a lot of games,” Marsh said of the Royals’ early offense. “First three innings I wasn’t paying attention. Sitting there for 20 or 30 minutes, I was like ‘what’s going on out there?'”

Kansas City has led or been tied for all 45 innings of the current homestand and hasn’t trailed since Wednesday’s loss at Seattle.

Matt Vierling hit a two-run triple in the fourth and scored on Colt Keith’s single. Keith had three of Detroit’s six hits.

Tigers LHP Tarik Skubal (6-0, 1.80 ERA) opposes Royals LHP Cole Ragans (3-3, 3.70) in Wednesday's series finale.

In the running for a top three trophy until the final two of twenty-two events, the Barton Community College men's track and field team had to settle for 4th place overall Saturday at the conclusion of the 2024 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships held at the University of University of Louisiana Monroe.

Trying to hold on down the stretch heading into the 5000m, Iowa Western leaped over the Cougars by putting thirteen points on the scoreboard with Barton sliding to the fourth position despite earning two points in the Championships' final 4x400m relay.

Barton captured three individual national championships among their 14 scoring performances for a 76 total, 2.5 points ahead of Indian Hills but twelve behind the Reivers for a top three trophy. South Plains took the title with 116 points in being followed by New Mexico Junior College's runner-up 107 points.

Christopher Young led all male and female performers with 34 total points, twelve ahead of the nearest competitor, by winning two of his four events along with a runner-up and third place finish.

Arguably one of the, if not the, most versatile and top throwers in Barton program history, Young popped into the program's hammer throw top ten at No. 9 by unleashing a personal best 56.61m (185-08) mark on his third attempt to win Thursday's event by ten inches. Christopher Crawford, who also had a decorated and program impact two-year career, returned from a mid-season injury and nearly two months away from competition, tallied another four points for the Cougars in placing 5th with a personal best 52.49m (172-02.00) throw.

On Friday, Young led another 14-point outburst by the Cougars' throwing crew in the shot put by marking a personal best 18.76m (61-06.75) in the fifth round to just miss the program record by 1 inch in posting the NJCAA's 7th all-time furthest throw. Crawford, who owns the fifth best throw in program history, placed 6th on the day (17.17m, 56-04.00) with freshman Ricardo Hayles earning the Cougars another point with an 8th place personal best mark of 16.97m (55-08.25).

Moved up a day due to Thursday's heavy rain, Young and all discus competitors were the last in action Friday evening at the historic Brown Stadium/Groseclose Track. Piling up another 13 points in the event, Young led the program's top-four all-time trio with a 3rd place (57.42m, 188-04.00) with Hayles placing 5th (55.73m, 182-10.00) and Crawford in 6th (54.81m, 179-10.00).

Young began Saturday's final day of competition with a runner-up placing in the javelin, twelve feet short of his program 3rd best mark, recording a season best 63.23m (207-05) stab in the ground.

As Young piled up points to lead all male and female competitors, Trevon Hamer made a name for himself placing third in the Field MVP race with 15 points. The first five points came on a 4th place in Thursday's long jump on a personal best 7.47m (24-06.25) leap before concluding with an individual national championship in Saturday's triple jump on a 15.90m (52-02.00) mark to move into 9th on the program all-time best achievement list.

Overall the Cougars compiled 64 points in the field events with the other twelve coming in the relays.

Two of the relays placed 4th, the 4x800m squad, who clocked a program second best time earlier of the season, comprised of Hamza Belkhalfi, Adrian Nethersole, Corlando Chambers, and Jasiah Clapp clocked a 7:36.48 on Thursday with Saturday's 4x100m relay squad of Jayden Singleton, Revon Williams, Malachi Carter, and Wanyae Belle clocking a 40.41 time.

Earning Barton's final two points across the three days of competition, Nethersole, Williams, Manjot Singh, and Chambers placed 7th in the concluding 4x400m relay in a time of 3:15.39.

Barton also had a pair of near misses to earn points, Belle coming up .01 seconds shy of the 200m finals with a 9th place 21.01 time as Singh crossed .33 seconds out of the 400m hurdle placings on a personal best 53.84 clocking.

Cougars place 4th at NJCAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships

the suspended game.

Woodcox and Austin Green also homered for Texas Tech. The Longhorns
got home runs from Jared Thomas and Jack O'Dowd.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Danny Neri’s third home run, with two outs in the top of
the 11th inning, lifted eighth-seeded UCF to a 6-5 win over
fifth-seeded Cincinnati in the first round of the Big 12 Conference
Tournament. Neri, who had a career-high four hits, rescued the
Knights on a 3-2 pitch after they allowed three runs in the bottom of
the ninth that tied the game at 5. UCF’s next game will be
determined by the result of the late game between No. 3 Texas and No.
10 Texas Tech. Neri had a home run in the second and added a two-run
shot in the seventh for a 5-1 lead. Christian Mitchelle had a
run-scoring single with two outs in the ninth and Josh Hegemann
followed with a two-run single to tie the game for Cincinnati.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Caedmon Parker and Braeden Sloan combined to pitch a
three-hitter and No. 9 seed TCU beat eighth-seed West Virginia 5-2 on
Tuesday to begin its defense of the Big 12 championship title. TCU
(32-19) advances to play top-seeded Oklahoma on Wednesday. West
Virginia (33-21) drops to the consolation side of the
double-elimination bracket and will face Kansas State on Wednesday in
an elimination game. Brody Green tripled and homered to power the TCU
offense. His solo home run into the TCU bullpen made it 5-2 in the
ninth. Chase Brunson, Ryder Robinson and Karson Bowen also had an RBI
for TCU. Sam Myers, who entered the tournament on a 13-game hitting
streak, went 0 for 4.

ARLINGTON, Texas
(AP) — Hunter Cranton struck out two in the ninth inning to help
earn his seventh save and No. 7 seed Kansas held off sixth-seeded
Kansas State 2-1 in the opening game of the Big 12 Tournament. Kansas
(30-21), which is playing in the tournament in back-to-back seasons
for the first time since 2017-19, avenged last year’s season-ending
7-1 tournament loss to Kansas State to advance to the winner’s
bracket. Kansas State (31-23) also continues in the
double-elimination tournament. Kansas broke a tie in the ninth when
Lenny Ashby sent a fly ball to the wall, resulting in a triple and
Collier Cranford hit a sacrifice fly to bring in pinch runner Sam
Hunt. Cranton struck out the first two batters, then got the
previously 3-for-3 Kaelen Culpepper to fly out.

BOSTON (AP) —
Jayson Tatum scored 36 points, including 10 in overtime after Jaylen
Brown’s tying 3-pointer with 6.1 seconds remaining in regulation,
and the Boston Celtics rallied just in time for a 133-128 victory
over the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday night in Game 1 of the Eastern
Conference finals. Jrue Holiday added a season-high 28 points and
Brown finished with 26. Game 2 is Thursday night in Boston. Tyrese
Haliburton had 25 points and 10 assists for the Pacers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —
Karl-Anthony Towns has seen the payoff this spring for his commitment
to and sacrifice for the Minnesota Timberwolves. They're in the
Western Conference finals for the first time in 20 years due in large
part to the offense and defense supplied by the four-time All-Star
over the first two rounds. They host the Dallas Mavericks in Game 1
on Wednesday night. The Mavericks have also hit their stride with the
Luka Doncic-Kyrie Irving duo that didn't take off on the first try
last season. Both teams used record-setting rallies to clinch their
second-round series wins.

— Bryson DeChambeau believes golf is as much about entertainment as
winning trophies. Xander Schauffele won the Wanamaker Trophy at the
PGA Championship. DeChambeau delivered the entertainment and came

The Barton Community College men's golf team concluded the 2024 season with a 19th place finish last Friday at the NJCAA Division I National Championships held at Rockwind Community Links in Hobbs, New Mexico.

The Cougars saved its best round of the week for the final day, finishing its first trip to nationals since 2014 with a 288 card to finish with a 64-over, 1200 accumulated score. Barton opened with a 303 for 18th place from Tuesday's opening round, slipping and holding in 19th with 300 and 309 second and third round cards.

Wrapping up a tremendous season and career as a Cougar, Axel Bolander made a seven spot climb in his final round with a 2-under 69 to lead the squad with a 28th place finish. Compiling rounds of 72-71-75, Bolander concluded with a 3-over 287 four-round score.

Tanapoom Kaewjoey led Barton's final round firing a 3-under 68, countering an 84 round from the day before after opening with 75 and 78 cards, to climb eighteen spots back up the leaderboard for a final standing of 87th at 21-over 305.

Kansas takes control in the ninth and beats Kansas State in the Big 12 Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Michael Massey and Salvador Perez homered as the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 8-3 on Monday night for their fourth straight win.

Massey opened the scoring in the second with a leadoff homer, the first long ball given up this season by Tigers starter Reese Olson after 48 1/3 innings, snapping the majors’ longest homerless streak.

“The home run was 95 (mph), down and in,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He wouldn’t have been looking there on a 3-2 pitch, but he was able to get the barrel to it. He’s just in a good spot and seeing the ball well.”

In his next at-bat, Massey stunned Olson with a liner off his right hip while Vinnie Pasquantino scored on a throwing error for a 2-0 Royals lead.

After a few warmup pitches, Olson (0-5) exited with a right hip contusion. He threw 2 2/3 innings, allowing the two runs and five hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

“He could have (continued),” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He was trying, but he was really tentative. Given that it was his drive leg, we were not going to take any chances. We took him out for precaution.”

In a 10-pitch at-bat, Perez led off the sixth with his ninth homer as the Royals greeted reliever Joey Wentz with five consecutive hits.

“I was late on 3-1, after that I just tried to make adjustments,” Perez said. “I got a pitch around the middle and I hit it pretty good.”

Seven straight batters reached safely while Kansas City scored six runs to build an 8-1 lead.

“It stems from being prepared,” said Massey, who doubled after Perez’s homer for his third hit. “You get a bunch of guys in a row that execute and you get those big innings.”

Michael Wacha (4-4) allowed two runs and six hits in seven innings while walking one with three strikeouts to win his third straight start.

“He was in the zone, so they were aggressive,” Quatraro said. “It looked like he located his fastball really well.”

“Getting back in attack mode and being ahead in the count kind of keeps them on their heels,” Wacha said.

Chris Stratton recorded four outs for his third save.

Kerry Carpenter hit his sixth homer into the leftfield fountains in the fourth, then doubled and scored in the seventh on Colt Keith’s two-out double. Keith had three of Detroit’s seven hits.

Carpenter’s eighth-inning sacrifice fly capped the scoring.

The Tigers have scored 20 runs while losing 8-of-9 starts by Olson.

Tigers RHP Reese Olson left Monday’s game with a right hip contusion after being struck by a third-inning line drive.

Royals LHP Jake Brentz was reinstated from the Injured List and optioned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.

Royals designated RHP Matt Sauer for assignment and selected LHP Sam Long from Triple-A Omaha.

Romero pitched a scoreless seventh and John King and Andrew Kittredge
combined for a scoreless eighth, before Ryan Helsley earned his 14th
save. Dean Kremer lasted just four innings as the Orioles lost their
fourth game in their last seven. Kremer allowed five runs on six
hits, walked three and struck out two.

UNDATED (AP) — The
field for the NCAA baseball tournament will take shape this week with
conference tournaments determining most of the 30 automatic
qualifiers. Also at stake are 34 at-large bids. The 16 NCAA regional
hosts will be announced Sunday and the rest of the 64-team field next
Monday. The College World Series is June 14 through June 23 or 24 in
Omaha, Nebraska. Top seed in the Power Five conference tournaments

University presidents around the country are scheduled to meet this
week to vote on whether to accept a proposed settlement of an
antitrust lawsuit that would cost the NCAA nearly $3 billion. The
deal would also create a landmark revenue-sharing system with college
athletes. The terms of the agreement have met some pushback from the
Division I conferences that do not compete in major college football.
They say they are being asked to bear an undue financial burden on
the damages portion of the settlement. Attorneys for the defendants
in House vs. NCAA gave college sports leaders until Thursday to
agree.

VANCOUVER, British
Columbia (AP) — Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal and an assist as
Edmonton scored three times in the second period and held on to beat
the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in Game 7 to advance to the Western
Conference final. Zach Hyman and Cody Ceci also scored, and Evan
Bouchard had two assists for the Oilers. Stuart Skinner finished with

Minnesota Vikings star wide receiver Justin Jefferson was absent on
Monday when the Vikings held their first of 10 allowable organized
team activities, according to a person with knowledge of the
situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of
anonymity because the club was not making details public. Jefferson's
absence comes as the Vikings are working to sign him to a contract
extension. Tuesday's on-field drills were scheduled to be open to

— A Kentucky court is postponing pro golfer Scottie Scheffler’s
appearance on charges he injured a police officer and disobeyed
commands during the PGA Championship. Scheffler was handcuffed and
taken to jail outside the Valhalla Golf Club on Friday. He was due in
court Tuesday, two days after finishing in the top ten. Now a judge
is postponing the court date until June 3. Scheffler faces four
charges, including felony assault over injuries a Louisville police
officer suffered. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, says the
situation is a misunderstanding and the golfer never disobeyed any
officer’s orders.

NORTH WILKESBORO,
N.C. (AP) — The most compelling part of Sunday night’s All-Star
Race wasn’t on the racetrack at North Wilkesboro Speedway but
rather in the infield afterward. Ricky Stenhouse confronted Kyle
Busch after the race face-to-face, then after a brief exchange threw
a right hook at the driver of the No. 8 Chevrolet setting off a brief
melee that involved several members of each driver’s crew and
Stenhouse’s father following a race that was dominated by pole
sitter Joey Logano. The antics potentially could result in a
suspension for Stenhouse.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Colton Herta and Andretti Global showed some speed in the penultimate
Indianapolis 500 practice session as cars reverted to race setups
after qualifying. It was a positive development for Honda, which had
watched Chevrolet sweep the front row with Team Penske and nail down
the first nine spots on the starting grid. The practice was the last
until Friday, when teams get on the track for one last shakedown
before Sunday's race. The conditions might be wildly different by
then. It was hot and sunny Monday, but cooler temperatures and
possibly some rain are due to arrive later in the week.

They say they are being asked to bear an undue financial burden on

Edmonton scored three times in the second period and held on to beat

court Tuesday, two days after finishing in the top ten. Now a judge
is postponing the court date until June 3. Scheffler faces four
charges, including felony assault over injuries a Louisville police
officer suffered. Scheffler’s attorney, Steve Romines, says the
situation is a misunderstanding and the golfer never disobeyed any

A model of consistency for so long, the St. Louis Cardinals are suddenly struggling to stay relevant.

Even after taking two of three against both the Angels and Red Sox, the Cardinals are six games under .500. They've rebounded from a seven-game losing streak earlier this month, winning five of their last seven, but they're seven games out of first place, and their run differential of minus-49 is by far the worst in the NL Central.

St. Louis went 71-91 last year, snapping a streak of 15 straight winning seasons. If they finish with a losing record two years in a row, it'll be the first time they've done that since the strike-shortened 1994 and 1995 campaigns. You have to go all the way back to 1958 and 1959 to find the last time the Cardinals were under .500 for two consecutive non-shortened seasons.

This is the franchise that let Albert Pujols leave and kept right on contending. The team that turned an 83-win season in 2006 into a World Series title. It's hard to write the Cardinals off, but it's also getting harder to see a particularly bright future.

The Brewers and Cubs are currently battling for the division lead. The Pirates and Reds are under .500 with St. Louis, but Pittsburgh has several years of Paul Skenes to look forward to. The same with Cincinnati and Elly De La Cruz.

St. Louis has only one top-50 prospect in MLB Pipeline's ranking — and that's right-hander Tink Hence, who is ranked 49th and currently in Double-A. Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman and Dylan Carlson were top St. Louis prospects over the past few years. Carlson is batting .130, and Walker was sent back to the minors after a 9-for-58 start to 2024. Gorman is batting .200.

Masyn Winn, the team's 22-year-old infielder, has been a little better, but only the Blue Jays and White Sox have fewer runs this season than the Cardinals. And that's after the St. Louis offense finally showed some signs of life this past week, twice scoring 10 runs and twice scoring seven.

Who led the 1995 Cardinals in home runs with 25?

Houston dug itself quite a hole early this season, but the worst may be over. After sweeping Oakland and taking two of three from Milwaukee, the Astros have won nine of their last 11. Although they're still just 21-26 and in third place in the AL West, FanGraphs gives them a 56% chance to make the playoffs.

Skenes threw six no-hit innings for the Pirates against the Cubs on Friday, striking out 11 before being pulled with 100 pitches. It was only his second big league start, and the 2023 No. 1 overall draft pick has already made some history. His 11 strikeouts were a franchise record for a starter at Wrigley Field, where the Pirates have played over 1,000 games.

Down by four in the bottom of the ninth, the Miami Marlins came back to tie it against Mets closer Edwin Díaz thanks to an RBI single by Jazz Chisholm and a three-run homer by Josh Bell. Otto Lopez then gave the Marlins a 10-9 win with a 10th-inning single.

New York had a win probability of 98.8% in the ninth inning according to Baseball Savant. It was that kind of week for the Mets, who dropped three of four to the first-place Phillies before losing two of three to the last-place Marlins.

Brady Singer stuck out nine, Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run
triple and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep of the Oakland
Athletics with an 8-1 victory. It was the third sweep of the season
for Kansas City. It took until September 20 for the Royals to record
their third sweep of the season last year. Singer tossed six innings
on one-run ball, giving up six hits with one walk and nine
strikeouts. The Athletics' JP Sears allowed four runs on five hits
with two walks and four strikeouts.


ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rafael
Devers tied a Boston record by homering for his fifth consecutive
game, and the Red Sox beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-3 to stop a
season-high, four-game losing streak. Devers hit a two-run homer in
the sixth off Ryan Fernandez, his ninth home run this season. He
became the seventh Boston player to homer in five straight games, the
first since Bobby Dalbec from Sept. 5-10, 2020. Tyler O’Neill
homered against his former team as Boston rebounded after falling two
games under .500 for the first time this season. The Red Sox outhit
St. Louis 14-6.


LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei
Ohtani’s first walk-off hit for the Los Angeles Dodgers was also
his first game-ending hit in the majors in nearly four years. His new
teammates and fans who celebrated with him at Chavez Ravine expect to
see many more feats from a superstar who’s somehow improving in
Dodger Blue. Ohtani pulled a low fastball to right with two outs in
the 10th inning Sunday, scoring Jason Heyward and ending the Dodgers’
3-2 victory over Cincinnati. Two teammates doused Ohtani with water
while a crowd of 52,656 roared for the latest feat by the $700
million slugger.


LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) —
Xander Schauffele has won his first major with a thrilling win at the
PGA Championship. Schauffele made a 6-foot birdie putt on the last
hole at Valhalla for a one-shot victory over Bryson DeChambeau.
Schauffele set a major championship scoring record in the process.
The Olympic gold medalist now has something even more valuable in
silver. He gets to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy. Schauffele finished at
21-under 263, breaking by one shot the major record. Schauffele is
the first player since Phil Mickelson in 2005 to birdie the last hole
of the PGA Championship to win by one.


LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) —
Scottie Scheffler finished off what he called a “hectic” week at
the PGA Championship by surging to an eighth-place finish. The
world's top-ranked golfer shot a 6-under 65 to finish at 13 under for
the tournament. The round came two days after Scheffler spent time in
a Louisville jail following his arrest on charges stemming from a
traffic incident. Scheffler is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday. The
27-year-old Texan says he's not sure what's in store on the legal
front in the near future and he's mostly focused on getting home to
his wife and newborn son.


DENVER (AP) — Anthony
Edwards overcame a slow start and the Timberwolves roared back from a
20-point second-half deficit to eliminate the reigning NBA champion
Denver Nuggets 98-90 in a Game 7 Minnesota masterpiece. The
Timberwolves overcame a 15-point halftime deficit — the largest
comeback in a Game 7 in NBA playoff history — behind Edwards, who
had just four points, no rebounds and three assists at halftime but
finished with 16 points, eight boards and seven assists. Jamal Murray
led Denver with 35 points and Nikola Jokic scored 34 but they got
little else from their supporting cast.


NEW YORK (AP) — Tyrese
Haliburton scored 26 points and the Indiana Pacers rode one of the
most sensational first halves in Game 7 history to a 130-109 victory
over the New York Knicks on Sunday, advancing to the Eastern
Conference finals for the first time in 10 years. The Pacers made 29
of their 38 shots in the first half, a shooting percentage of 76.3%
that was the highest in the postseason since 1997, when the NBA began
keeping detailed play-by-play for all four quarters. They led 70-55
at that point. The No. 6-seeded Pacers advanced to face top-seeded
Boston in a series that begins Tuesday.


NEW YORK (AP) — Jalen
Brunson broke his left hand in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference
semifinals, one final injury for a team that was decimated by them.
The Knicks lost their most important player when Brunson checked out
late in the third quarter and went to the locker room. The Knicks
announced in the fourth quarter that he wouldn’t return. Brunson
was struggling Sunday, going 6 for 17 for 17 points. He also had nine
assists. OG Anunoby played despite a strained left hamstring that
forced him to miss the previous four games, but lasted just five
minutes.


UNDATED (AP) — Jim Otto, the
Hall of Fame center known as Mr. Raider for his durability through a
litany of injuries, has died. The team confirmed Otto's death Sunday
night. He was 86. The cause of death was not immediately known. Otto
joined the Raiders for their inaugural season in the American
Football League in 1960 and was a fixture on the team for the next 15
years. He never missed a game because of injuries and competed in 210
consecutive regular-season games and 308 straight total contests
despite undergoing nine operations on his knees during his playing
career. His right leg was amputated in 2007.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brady Singer stuck out nine, Vinnie Pasquantino hit a three-run triple and the Kansas City Royals completed a sweep of the Oakland Athletics with an 8-1 victory Sunday.

It was the third sweep of the season for Kansas City. It took until September 20 for the Royals to record their third sweep of the season last year.

Singer (4-2) tossed six innings on one-run ball, giving up six hits with one walk and nine strikeouts. It was the fifth time this season that Singer has stuck out six or more and was one shy of his season high. He has gone at least five innings in every start this season.

“That’s what we were hoping for, the early counts and low pitch counts and making them make decisions," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Certainly couldn't ask more for that when it comes to efficiency. To have him set the tone like that and get the early lead that’s all we could hope for.”

Pasquantino hit a three-run pinch-hit triple to highlight a four-run sixth inning for the Royals. It was his first career triple in the Majors. Kansas City ended the day with five extra-base hits.

“The nice thing about the Majors is that we have a batting cage close, so from the third inning on, I’m getting hot for that one opportunity," Pasquantino said. “I’m not coming into the game for my speed; I know it’ll be a high-leverage situation, so I was able to do that today.”

Bobby Witt Jr. went 2 for 3 with a double, a triple and two RBIs. Maikel Garcia had a two-RBI game and extended a six-game hitting streak. Salvador Perez had a two-hit game with an RBI.

JP Sears (3-3) tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Brent Rooker hit his 11th home run of the season with a three-run shot over the left-field bullpen. He leads the team in the category.

Tyler Soderstrom put the A’s on the board with a two-out double in the fourth. Since being recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Soderstorm has a hit in six of nine games. Max Schuemann had a two-hit game.

Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Oakland had a chance to take the lead with bases loaded with two outs, but Singer ended the inning on a Rooker groundout. Oakland left 10 men on base on 11 hits.

“We have to do a better job of scoring on situations to keep ourselves close late in games,” Rooker said. “We just need to take advantage when we have opportunities. We are just going to keep working. The guys stepping into the box are working hard. We are just going to keep pushing through this tough stretch.”

On a 10-game road trip, the Athletics went 1-9, including an eight-game losing streak. It was also the fourth time Oakland has been swept this season.

“I think the at-bats were better the last two days. We pitched better than we had all series,” A's manager Mark Kotsay said. “Sometimes you get into these ruts where you start hitting well but not pitching and vice versa. You just have to push through them.”

The Athletics head home after a 10-day, tri-city road trip hosting the Rockies beginning on Tuesday night. Aaron Brooks (0-1, 3.86 ERA) will start game one for Oakland. Kansas City continues a six-game homestand with a matchup against Detroit beginning Monday night. Michael Wacha (3-4, 4.71 ERA) will take the mound for the Royals.

Region 6 Baseball Tournament Scores-Schedule

The Lady Panther swim team capped a successful season with a 23rd-place finish at the Class 5-1A State Swimming and Diving Championships Friday and Saturday in Lenexa. Great Bend landed several swimmers in the consolation finals.

The 200-yard free relay team of junior Josephine Mazouch, freshman Meredith Mazouch, and seniors Sydney Kruckenberg and Emily Hall placed 13th. The team placed 15th in the prelims in 1:51:56, then cut it to 1:49.83 in the consolation finals. Blue Valley Southwest just missed a state meet record to win the gold by more than three seconds in 1:39.89.

Hall placed 11th in the 100 back. Swam 14th in the prelims with a time of 1:06.05, then swam a season-best 1:05.24 in the consolation finals to move into 11th. Andover junior Mari Griffin missed a state meet record by 0.14 seconds for the gold by more than three seconds in 55.29.

The Lady Panther 400 free relay team of Kruckenberg, Hall, Josephine Mazouch, and Darcy Feist placed 12th. The girls swam a 4:06.52 to finish 12th in the prelims. Despite a big cut to 4:03.99 in the consolation finals, Great Bend held that 12th position. Blue Valley Southwest beat the field by more than two seconds in 3:38.86 for the title.

Josephine Mazouch swam a 58.97 in the 100 free to take the 16th and final spot in the consolation finals. She cut that time to 58.75 in that final race to move up to 15th. McPherson senior Danica Brunk won the race by 0.4 seconds in 52.77.

Josephine Mazouch stayed under 27 seconds in the 50 free prelims but her time of 26.83 was half a second behind the final consolation qualifier. She finished 19th overall. Hillsboro sophomore Lauryn Vogt tied a 26-year-old state meet record for the win in 23.77. Hays junior Izabel Schmidt swam second in 24.41.
