ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Kodey Shojinaga had a three-run double to cap a nine-run first inning, Jake English hit a go-ahead homer in the eighth and No. 7 seed Kansas held on to beat ninth-seeded TCU 11-10 on Friday to advance to the Big 12 Tournament semifinals.

Kansas (31-22) will play top-seeded Oklahoma for a spot in the championship game. On Thursday the Sooners rallied from an early two-run deficit and a season-high seven errors to beat Kansas 7-5 for their 10th victory in the last 11 games.

Kansas sent 14 batters to the plate in the first, scoring nine runs on five hits — three of them extra-base hits.

English opened the scoring with a two-run single, then Kansas scored seven more runs with two outs. Chase Diggins hit a bloop single to center to score two, John Nett lined a shot to left for two more runs and Shojinaga added a bases-clearing double.

TCU answered with two home runs in the second and added a three-run shot in the third to get within 9-6. The Horned Frogs tied it at 10-all in the seventh on Luke Boyers' two-run homer.

Hunter Cranton (4-3) picked up the win after retiring the side in order in the eighth, with two strikeouts, and getting a double play in the ninth after allowing two singles.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos closed out their first week of OTAs Thursday with coach Sean Payton praising all three quarterbacks competing for the starting job and cautioning that nothing should be read into the order in which they take snaps.

“We try to split up all the reps,″ Payton said. “There’s going to be a time when you read into the reps, I don’t think it’s early in OTAs.”

Jarrett Stidham is technically the incumbent, having started the final two games last season, but he’ll have to beat out two first-round picks in rookie Bo Nix, the 12th player and sixth quarterback selected in last month’s draft, and Zach Wilson, the second-overall pick in 2021 by the New York Jets, who traded him to Denver last month.

Asked about Nix’s progress so far, Payton said: “Good, he’s farther along than most would be. We’re talking about a player who’s played 61 games (in college). He’s extremely smart. He’s picked it up very quickly.″

Nix worked with the starters Thursday after Stidham got first-team reps Tuesday and Wilson worked with the No. 1 unit Wednesday.

Stidham has started four games in four NFL seasons with the Patriots, Raiders and Broncos, backing up Tom Brady, Derek Carr and Russell Wilson.

“Having two new guys in the room, this is the first time I’ve been the vet in the room,” Stidham said. Otherwise, he said, he’s competing for a job just like he has every year he’s been in the NFL.

Zach Wilson went 12-21 as the starter in New York and was deemed expendable with Aaron Rodgers returning from a torn Achilles tendon suffered in last season’s opener. Wilson said he’s eager to play in Payton’s system, which he feels will bring out the best in him.

“They’re all in a race to learn this system,” Payton said. “Man, they’re doing well.”

Each was superior in his own way Thursday when Stidham showed a grasp of the offense befitting someone with a year’s head start, Nix deftly handled the pressure of the pass rushers and Wilson showed off his arm strength.

“You know, it’s kind of the orphan group,” Payton said. “They’re all orphan dogs. They come from somewhere. But they’re doing good.”

Wilson, a proud owner of two Siberian huskies, chuckled at the metaphor.

“We’ve gone through it, right? You can see why,” Wilson said, adding that for him, “it’s been three years of tough challenges. But in the end that’s what makes you stronger and you just need somebody to believe in you and believe in yourself.”

The Broncos have rolled through 13 starting quarterbacks since Peyton Manning retired after Denver won Super Bowl 50 in 2016.

At a banquet honoring his community involvement Wednesday night, Manning called Payton’s system “extremely quarterback friendly,” one he said he would like to have played in during his Hall of Fame career.

“It sounds like they got great competition over there,” Manning said. “That’s always good, makes everybody better.”

Manning goes back a long way with both Stidham and Nix, who as youths participated in his family’s passing academy. Although he doesn’t know Wilson well, Manning reached out to him when he was traded to the Broncos.

“It’s exciting,” said Wilson, who grew up in Utah, where the Broncos are popular. “I’ve grown up watching him and the way he plays the game, the way he attacks it every single day. And he’s a legend out here. So, hopefully I can spend a little time picking his brain.”

Asked about Nix, Manning said that while there are exceptions such as Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes, who bided their time on the sideline before getting their crack at starting, the quickest way for a rookie to get up to speed in the NFL is to take his lumps right away.

That’s what Manning did in Indianapolis in 1998 when he threw 28 interceptions — a rookie record that still stands — and suffered through a 3-13 season that was followed a year later by a 13-3 campaign.

“There’s no way that would have happened had I not played and kind of gone through those struggles,” Manning said. He added that his brother Eli told him he learned more from the seven games he started as rookie than from the nine he watched.

Sean Payton praises all 3 quarterbacks competing for Broncos starting job

Chasing a national title Thursday in Melbourne, Florida, Butpapaporn Sukterm of the Barton Community College women's golf team put together a historic run in coming up just two strokes shy at the 2024 NJCAA Division I Championships.

Utilizing just a four-man team for the tournament, the Cougars concluded their 13th straight trip to the season finale securely in the 12th overall position at 153-over par 1321. Barton opened with 332 and 336 before closing strong on the final two rounds of 326 and 327.

Sukterm was the Cougars' big story by posting multiple program records at the Championship including firing a final round 6-under par for a runner-up finish matching Peeradon Piddon's 2017 title chase.

Opening with a 2-over 75 on the par-73 course, Sukterm moved up from the 12th position each day behind a pair of 1-under 72 cards. Sitting in 5th place and eight strokes behind the leader in the final round, Sukterm drained a program record eight birdies in applying pressure to trail by one stroke with six to play.

Angelica Holman held off the charge, taking on another red number down the stretch to win the Championship at 8-under 284 leading Daytona State College's title on a record breaking 6-under par 1162 accumulated effort across the four rounds.

Sukterm's 6-under 286 also established the new program best at the national tournament to better a pair of third place finishers one stroke behind. Other program bests included 16 total birdies and just 11 holes of bogey or worse.

A pair of sophomores closed out their Barton career on the national stage for the second straight year, Valentina Leyva placing 51st at 36-over 328 with Andrea Peraza in 65th at 49-over 341. Frida Medellin wrapped up her freshman campaign with a 78th placing at 74-over 366.

Leyva, who placed 35th at last year's season ending tournament helping Barton match a program 6th best national finish, carded three birdies during the week including within her opening and best round of 80 for a 40th day one placing. Slipping to 48th following an 83 second day, Leyva stayed steady with 83 and 82 rounds through the final days of competition.

Peraza hovered in the low 70's of the leaderboard on 87 and 89 cards before climbing up the chart with an 84 card before concluding her Barton career on her week's best effort of 81.

A steady 90 and 92 rounds began Medellin's first national experience, posting her best round of 14-over 87 in the third round with a 97-card wrapping up the experience.

5A State Softball Tournament Pairings

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jaxon Willits hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, Scott Mudler went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and No. 1 seed Oklahoma survived its seven errors to beat Kansas 7-5 Thursday to advance to the semifinals of the Big 12 Tournament.

Oklahoma (36-18) plays Friday against the winner between the seventh-seeded Jayhawks and No. 9 seed TCU earlier in the day.

Kendall Pettis doubled down the line in left to lead off the bottom of the fourth and then scored on a single by Mudler to cut Oklahoma's deficit to a run. After back-to-back strikeouts, Willits hit a deep shot to right field that made it 5-4 and the Sooners led the rest of the way.

Lenny Ashby went 2 for 3 with two doubles for Kansas (30-22).

John Spikerman singled to lead off the bottom of the first, advanced to second on an error and moved to third on a groundout by Willits before he scored on a sacrifice fly by Easton Carmichael to give Oklahoma a 1-0 lead.

Ashby doubled to lead off the second — Kansas' only hit of the inning — and the Jayhawks capitalized on two walks and three Oklahoma errors to take a 3-1 lead. An RBI single by Mudler in the bottom half made in a one-run game before Collier Cranford, who reached base on an error, scored on a two-out single by Mike Koszewski in the third.

Carmichael led off the bottom of the seven with a triple, Michael Snyder followed with RBI single and then stole second before scoring on a triple by Jackson Nicklaus that gave the Sooners a 7-4 lead.

antitrust allegations for nearly $2.8 billion over the next 10 years.
The deal also calls for a groundbreaking revenue-sharing model that

— Authorities say the Kentucky police officer who arrested
top-ranked golfer Scottie Scheffler outside the PGA Championship is
receiving “corrective action” for not having his body-worn camera
activated when he approached the golfer’s vehicle and was allegedly
dragged to the ground. Louisville police said Thursday that they
don't have footage of the initial interaction Friday between
Scheffler and Louisville Detective Bryan Gillis outside Valhalla Golf
Club. The golfer was arrested on charges that he injured Gillis and
disobeyed commands, but Scheffler has called the incident a
misunderstanding. Officials didn't elaborate on what “corrective
action” has been taken against Gillis for not having his bodycam
turned on.

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP)
— The Las Vegas Raiders are rewarding star pass rusher Maxx Crosby
with a $6 million raise this season and another $1.2 million next
year. The person with knowledge of the deal spoke to The Associated
Press on condition of anonymity because the contract details have not
been announced. Three years remain on Crosby’s contract. He signed
a four-year extension in March 2022 worth about $95 million. He was
scheduled to approximately $19.38 million this year and $21.92 in

Long after Scott McLaughlin won the pole for the Indianapolis 500, he

Hoisington Advances in State Tournament 3-1

NEW YORK (AP) —The NCAA and the nation's five biggest conferences have agreed to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/9a01e3058fee79cbd69bfce7d861e3c9">pay nearly $2.8 billion to settle a host of antitrust claims</a>,a monumental decision that sets the stage for a groundbreaking revenue-sharing model that could start directing millions of dollars directly to athletes as soon as the 2025 fall semester.

The Pac-12 became the final conference to sign off on the proposal Thursday when its university leaders voted to approve, according to a person with direct knowledge of the results.

The Southeastern Conference presidents and chancellors unanimously approved the deal earlier Thursday, another person with knowledge of that decision told The Associated Press. Both spoke spoke on condition of anonymity because an official announcement between the Pac-12, SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference and NCAA was still being prepared.

The other organizations voted to approve earlier in the week ahead of a Thursday deadline given by the plaintiffs’ attorneys.

The deal still must be approved by the federal judge overseeing the case and challenges could arise, but if the agreement stands it will mark the beginning of a new era in college sports where athletes are compensated more like professionals and schools can compete for talent using direct payments.

The details in the plan signal the end of the NCAA’s bedrock amateurism model that dates to its founding in 1906. Indeed, the days of NCAA punishments for athletes driving booster-provided cars started vanishing three years ago when the organization&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-sports-sports-0aee610b0152c02dcd5d3eddb4d29f76">lifted restrictions on endorsement deals</a>&nbsp;backed by so-called name, image and likeness money.

Now it is not far-fetched to look ahead to seasons where a star quarterback or top prospect on a college basketball team are not only cashing in big-money NIL deals but have a $100,000 school payment in the bank to play.

There are a host of details still to be determined, but the agreement calls for the NCAA and the conferences to pay $2.77 billion over 10 years to more than 14,000 former and current college athletes who say now-defunct rules prevented them from earning money from endorsement and sponsorship deals dating to 2016.

Some of that money will come from NCAA reserve funds and insurance but even though the lawsuit specifically targeted five conferences that are comprised of 69 schools (including Notre Dame),&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ncaa-lawsuit-settlement-752156fdb0ea01445f52b1b109d14922">dozens of other NCAA member schools</a>&nbsp;will see smaller distributions from the NCAA to cover the mammoth payout.

Schools in the Big Ten, Big 12, Atlantic Coast and Southeastern conferences will end up bearing the brunt of the settlement at a cost of about $300 million each over 10 years, the majority of which will be paid to athletes going forward.

The Pac-12 is also part of the settlement, with all 12 sharing responsibility even though Washington State and Oregon State will be the only league members left by this fall after the other 10 schools leave.

In the new compensation model, each school will be permitted but not required to set aside up to $21 million in revenue to share with athletes per year, though as revenues rise so could the cap.

Athletes in all sports would be eligible for payments and schools would be given the freedom to decide how that money is divvied up among sports programs. Scholarship limits by sport will be replaced by roster restrictions.

Whether the new compensation model is subject to the Title IX gender equity law is unknown along with whether schools will be able to bring NIL activities in-house as they hope and squeeze out the booster-run collectives that have sprouted up in the last few years to pay athletes. Both topics could lead to more lawsuits.

The class-action federal lawsuit at the center of the settlement,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/9a01e3058fee79cbd69bfce7d861e3c9">House v. the NCAA,</a>&nbsp;was set to go to trial in January. The complaint, brought by former Arizona State swimmer Grant House and Sedona Prince, a former Oregon and current TCU basketball player, said the NCAA, along with the five wealthiest conferences, improperly barred athletes from earning endorsement money.

NCAA, nation's biggest conferences ok $2.8 billion lawsuit settlement

The NCAA and Big Ten Conference leadership approved a $2.8 billion settlement of antitrust claims Wednesday, moving college athletics closer to some of the most sweeping changes in its history.

The NCAA completed its three-part approval process late Wednesday, with its 15-member Board of Governors voting unanimously to accept the proposal — with one member abstaining — according to two people with direct knowledge of the vote who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the NCAA was not publicly revealing its internal process.

The settlement could resolve three major antitrust lawsuits against the NCAA that carry the threat of some $20 billion in damages, a blow that would cripple the organization. The settlement includes dramatic changes to the NCAA's amateur sports model, including allowing revenue-sharing by schools with their athletes.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs in House v. the NCAA gave the defendants a Thursday deadline to agree to a settlement. Southeastern Conference and Pac-12 presidents were scheduled to meet during the day to consider the deal.

The Big 12 and Atlantic Coast Conference presidential boards voted to move forward with the settlement on Tuesday. Big Ten presidents voted to approve the deal Wednesday during spring meetings in Los Angeles, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told AP on condition of anonymity because the conference was not making its internal discussions public.

As the leagues and NCAA marched toward the settlement, a fourth antitrust case presents a potential complication.

U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney in Colorado ruled Thursday that Fontenot vs. the NCAA will stay in her court instead of being moved to California and combined with one of the other antitrust lawsuits that could be covered by the settlement.

Attorney for the plaintiffs in Fontenot said they won’t know whether their claims would be covered by the settlement until they have all the details of the proposal.

“One way or the other, they have to deal with us or I just don’t see how a settlement ultimately gets done,” George Zelcs, one of the plaintiffs' attorneys, told AP on Wednesday. “They have to either include us or get an order that requires us to be involved in it. All of which we have arguments against as well.”

The NCAA and five conferences named in the House vs. NCAA lawsuit that is at the center of settlement talks have asked Sweeney to combine the Fontenot case with Carter vs. the NCAA, which is being heard in the Northern District of California.

Under terms of the proposed settlement, the NCAA would pay $2.77 billion over 10 years to former and current college athletes who were denied by now-defunct rules the ability to earn money from endorsement and sponsorship deals dating to 2016. The NCAA and conferences also would agree to establish a revenue-sharing system, with schools allowed — though not required — to spend about $21 million a year on their athletes. That number could grow over time if revenue increases.

House and Hubbard v. NCAA have already been combined in the Northern District of California and are being overseen by U.S. Judge Claudia Wilken, who has ruled against the NCAA in several high-profile antitrust cases in recent years.

Carter is being overseen by U.S. Judge Richard Seeborg. Fontenot would be added to Seeborg's cases.

Former Colorado football player Alex Fontenot filed his lawsuit last November, claiming NCAA rules have illegally prevented college athletes from earning their fair share of the millions of dollars in revenue schools bring in. Garrett Broshuis, Zelcs' colleague at the law firm Korein Tillery, said the Fontenot case should not be combined with the other three because they have fundamental differences.

“House was focused on name, image and likeness issues, which is really just a small segment of the overall revenue that the NCAA and the conferences and their members are bringing in,” Broshuis told AP. “Our case is instead focusing on what would be the true free-market value of the services being provided by these athletes.”

Broshuis said the Carter case focuses on just basketball and football players from Power Five conferences — ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC.

“Whereas the Fontenot proposed class is broader than that. Revenue is revenue no matter what sport,” he said.

The House case is a class-action lawsuit that seeks back pay for college athletes who were denied name, image and likeness compensation dating to 2016. The NCAA lifted its ban on athletes earning NIL money in 2021.

Steve Berman, one of the lead attorneys in House, said in a statement to AP the issues in Fontenot completely overlap with the other cases and the settlement — if approved — “will release all of their claims.”

There were no easy matchups at this year's Class 5A Softball State Championships in Topeka. Great Bend entered the field with a 22-6 record but still found itself opposite No. 1 seed Spring Hill in Thursday's early game. Braelyn Turner got the Lady Broncs in order in the bottom of the third. DeShawnna Bryant led off the fourth with a home run to tie the score at three. Kamdyn Koelsch followed with a single. Rylee Prilling, running for the catcher, moved around the bases on a sac bunt from Halle Post and singles from Denver Ringo and McCauley. Post came around to score on a fielder's choice off Mazouch's bat to extend the Lady Panther lead to 5-3.

Spring Hill got back a run in the bottom of the fourth before the proverbial wheels fell off for the Lady Panthers in the fifth and sixth innings.&nbsp;

Turner pitched into the fifth inning and returned in the sixth inning to record the final two outs. Chayla Prendergast recorded the final two outs of the fifth inning and got the first batter in the sixth inning to line out before hitting a batter and walking the next three.&nbsp;

Bryant homered for her lone hit. McCauley singled and doubled, and Mazouch doubled for her lone hit. The Lady Panthers had eight hits and struck out just three times in the loss.

Lady Panthers lose first-round state game to No. 1 Spring Hill

Ellinwood senior Drew Heinz entered the Class 2A State Golf Championships in Dodge City Monday and Tuesday as a two-time state runner-up. He finished three shots behind Salina-Sacred Heart's Michael Matteucci last year, and missed the title by a single shot as a sophomore. Monday was a big day. Heinz shot a 66 on day one to open up a 5-stroke lead. He shot a 74 on Tuesday to finish with 140 strokes and beat the runner-up Matteucci by eight strokes.

"It feels really good," Heinz said. "After the two runners-up, it is awesome to finally get it done. It made it even better with all my friends and family around."

The rest of the Eagle golfers celebrated a second-place team finish. Sacred Heart shot a 612 to win its ninth-straight state championship. Ellinwood finished with 669 strokes to edge out Topeka's Cair Paravel Latin School by 13 strokes. Hutchinson Trinity placed fourth with 691 strokes, and Hoxie rounded out the top five with 701 strokes.

Sacred Heart took the next four three spots behind Heinz and capped team scoring with a 10th-place finisher with a 161. Eagle senior Mason Moore shot a 166 to tie for 15th. Luke Heinz shot a 178 for 35th, and Braden Lewis scored the final team shots with a 185 for 42nd. A.J. Bowyer cut three strokes from his day-one score to place 48th with a 201, and Austin Brack shot a 207 for the Eagles.

Ellinwood's Heinz celebrates state golf title; team finishes second

Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is hoping for a much quieter rest of the offseason now that the defending Super Bowl champions have reconvened for a series of voluntary workouts, culminating with their mandatory minicamp in the middle of next month.

By DAVE SKRETTA AP Sports WriterKansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid is hoping for a much quieter rest of the offseason now that the defending Super Bowl champions have reconvened for a series of voluntary workouts, culminating with their mandatory minicamp in the middle of next month.Whether it's been the unresolved Dallas car crash involving wide receiver Rashee Rice, the polarizing comments delivered by kicker Harrison Butker or the wild schedule foisted upon Kansas City by the NFL that has it playing every day of the week but Tuesday, there has been no shortage of headlines involving the Chiefs since their title triumph in February.“Obviously, we don't want those things obviously to happen,” Reid said, primarily alluding to Rice's legal trouble, “but things do happen and you learn from it. And you end it. That is what's important.”The case involving Rice, one of the breakout stars of last season, has been the biggest headache for Kansas City.The 24-year-old faces one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury after he was accused of driving at speeds approaching 120 mph before a crash. The wreck in a speeding Lamborghini, which Rice has admitted to driving, involved six vehicles and resulted in multiple injuries.One of his friends, Theodore Knox, was driving a Corvette involved in the wreck and faces the same charges. Both are accused of leaving the scene without providing information or determining whether anyone needed medical attention.Earlier this week, Dallas police said a separate situation apparently involving Rice had been resolved when a man signed an affidavit of non-prosecution over an incident at a downtown nightclub. The wide receiver reportedly had been accused of assaulting the man, though Rice was never identified by Dallas police in a report of the incident provided to The Associated Press.In the meantime, Rice continues to practice with the Chiefs during their voluntary workout program.“We'll just let the situation play its way out,” Reid said.Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was asked what advice he could provide Rice going forward, particularly with a legal case — and likely NFL suspension — hanging over his head and the start of the season less than four months away.“It's trying to do whatever we can to teach him how to learn from his mistakes,” Mahomes replied. “Obviously, that was a big mistake. Learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again, and do the best you can to be the best you can be for society and those around you. ... We're going to do what we can to get him on the right path to be a great football player, obviously, but we want him to be a great person, too.”Mahomes also said that while he doesn't necessarily agree with the comments that Butker made in his recent commencement address at Benedictine College, the Chiefs' star quarterback supports the kicker's right to make them.Among other things, Butker said most women receiving degrees were probably more excited about getting married and having kids; argued some Catholic leaders were “pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America;" referred to a “deadly sin sort of pride that has a month dedicated to it” in an oblique reference to Pride month; and took aim at President Joe Biden’s policies, including his condemnation of the Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.“We're not always going to agree,” Mahomes said, “and there are certain things he said that I don't necessarily agree with.”Mahomes doesn't believe Butker's comments will be a problem in the locker room, though. Nor does he think that Rice's legal trouble will cause any sort of rift as the Chiefs chase their third straight Super Bowl title and fourth in six years.“When you get in the locker room, it's a safe space where everyone can be themselves,” Mahomes said. "It's always good to have people here — people in Kansas City, competing — and then being as smart as we can when we're not in the building.“I think guys understand we need to step up as a team and an organization," Mahomes added, “but we need to go out there to prove it for other people to believe it as well.”The Chiefs would certainly do well to bond quickly. The NFL has presented them with a brutal schedule.Along with playing on every day of the week but Tuesday — including Christmas for the second year in a row — the Chiefs will be done with their bye after Week 6 and later have a stretch in which they play three games in an 11-day span.
