Athletics look to end skid in game against the Royals

Trailing by one and down to their final strike in the top of the ninth, Owen Clyne's opposite field two-RBI go-ahead single lifted the Barton Community College baseball team over Cowley College on Thursday afternoon in the Plains District Tournament at Wichita State University's Eck Stadium.

Seeing its three-run lead in the bottom of the eighth evaporate into an 8-7 deficit coming to bat in the top of the ninth, back-to-back one-out Cole Schieffer and Robby Bolin singles ignited the rally attempt with Clyne's two-run single giving the Cougars a 9-8 comeback victory.

The 10th seeded Cougars (41-19) secured their second straight victory over a higher seed to advance into Friday afternoon's 4:00 p.m. winners bracket semifinal game against top-seeded Johnson County Community College who defeated No. 4 seed Kansas City Kansas Community College 7-4.

Cowley placed the tying run on in the bottom of the 9th with a two-out walk, but two-way player Kyler Horsman recorded a strikeout to end the game and secure his second victory of the year. Horsman (2-1) pitched the final 2.0-innings allowing three hits, one run, a walk and four strikeouts while also leading five different multi-hit performances from the Cougar lineup going 3 for 6 at the plate with two-RBIs.

Barton outhit Cowley 14-9, getting hits from eight of the nine in the lineup.

Clyne and Schieffer joined Horsman to lead Barton's RBI production each knocking in a pair with three others adding one brought home.

Held scoreless over the opening five innings and trailing 3-0, Barton broke through in the top of the sixth with a five-run inning with the first six reaching base behind five singles and a walk. Schieffer's two-runs brought around gifted the Cougars their first lead following Ayden Hadley and Hank Orr run delivering singles and Bolin's groundout ensuing scoring one for a 5-3 lead.

Horsman's two-run single in the eighth added a three-run cushion of 7-4 but four of the Tigers nine hits coming in the bottom of the eighth sparked Cowley's four run frame and 8-7 advantage. 

Starting pitcher Aidan Sowers grinded out four innings with three hits, three runs, walking three and fanning one. Anthony Treto worked the next 3.0-innings scattering two hits, two runs with two walks and pair of strikeouts.

Cougars advance to District Semifinals with ninth inning rally over Cowley

Sports has revealed an image of the College Football 25 cover that
features Michigan running back Donovan Edwards, Texas quarterback
Quinn Ewers and Colorado two-way player Travis Hunter. The video-game
developer said the game will be released on July 19. EA Sports
unveiled the standard cover Thursday after a photo of its deluxe
edition was leaked last week. All three cover athletes are active
players. They said name, image and likeness money played no role in
their decision to accept the cover offer. EA Sports College Football
25 will be EA’s first college football game in over a decade.

The head of the association representing athletic directors of
Football Bowl Subdivision schools is stepping down this fall after
more than eight years as president and CEO. Tom McMillen has led
LEAD1 since 2015 and will remain in his position through June 30 and
transition to a part-time role through Sept. 30. LEAD1 represents the
interests of the 133 schools that play the highest level of Division
I football and attempts to develop consensus among their athletic
directors as they address issues affecting college athletics. A
national search will be conducted for his successor.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) —
Anthony Edwards scored 27 points to pull the Minnesota Timberwolves
out of their mid-series slump and deliver a flawless 115-70 victory
over the Denver Nuggets to force a Game 7 in this roller-coaster
playoff matchup. Jaden McDaniels pitched in 21 points and lockdown
defense, and Mike Conley had 13 points in his return from injury. Big
men Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns and Naz Reid combined for 38
rebounds and a relentless effort to keep NBA MVP Nikola Jokic to a
relatively quiet 22 points. The decisive game for a spot in the
Western Conference finals is in Denver on Sunday.

Chris Kreider had a third-period hat trick to help the New York
Rangers erase a two-goal deficit and beat the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3
to close out the second-round playoff series in six games and advance

Hurricanes' 3-1 lead entering the final period. He had the winner
when he tipped in Ryan Lindgren’s pass to make it 4-3 at the 15:41
mark. Barclay Goodrow added an empty-netter. Martin Necas, Seth
Jarvis and Sebastian Aho scored for Carolina, which had won two
straight after falling into a 3-0 hole.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP)
— Xander Schauffele has set the PGA Championship record with a 62.
He also ties a major championship record that he shared last year in
the U.S. Open. Schauffele took advantage of rain-softened conditions
at Valhalla. And he's been playing some good golf. Schauffele was
runner-up last week in the Wells Fargo Championship. Schauffele
played the back nine in 31. He ran off three birdies in a four-hole
stretch on the front nine to get in range of the record. The previous
mark at the PGA was a 63. One of those was Jose Maria Olazabal at
Valhalla 10 years ago.

— Tiger Woods fired a 1-over par 72 during the opening round of the
PGA Championship. The 15-time major champion faltered late. He was
1-under heading into his final two holes before a pair of three-putts
led to bogeys that pushed him into plus territory. Woods arrived at
Valhalla having not played since his last-place finish at the Masters
last month. The 48-year-old Woods says it took him a few holes to get
the competitive juices flowing. When he arrives at the course for the
second round he will try to avoid missing the cut for the fourth time
in his last seven visits to the PGA.

BOSTON (AP) — Rays
reliever Jason Adam was forced out of Thursday night’s game at
Fenway Park in the ninth inning when pitching coach Kyle Snyder
headed to the mound with Tampa Bay out of visits. After a long delay,
Erasmo Ramírez entered with two runners on and retired Romy González
on a game-ending groundout to save a 7-5 victory over the Boston Red
Sox. Rays manager Kevin Cash took full responsibility for the mistake
and said he was glad it didn't cost his team the game.

NEW YORK (AP) —
The NFL is distancing itself from Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison
Butker, saying “his views are not those of the NFL as an
organization.” Butker served as the commencement speaker at
Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school, last
week and said most of the women receiving degrees were probably more
excited about getting married and having children. The NFL says
“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views
are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in
our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

SPRING, Texas (AP) —
Gymnastics star Simone Biles says she is better equipped to handle
the challenges that await as she prepares for a third Olympics. The
27-year-old became a touchstone for the discussion around mental
health at the Tokyo Games in 2021 when she pulled herself out of
several competitions because of mental trauma that made it difficult
for her to compete. Biles says she now works with a therapist
regularly, even during meets, to help her deal with whatever may
come. The seven-time Olympic medalist begins preparations for Paris
at the U.S. Classic in Hartford, Connecticut.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) —
Marcus Ericsson returned to the Indianapolis 500 with zero regrets
but ended Thursday with a violent collision late in the first full
day of practice. Ericsson hit a curb with just over two hours
remaining in the session, causing his car to spin and hit the wall
three different times. Before the crash, Ericsson had moved past the
controversial ending to last year’s race that cost the Swede a
second consecutive win in the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing.” He
will try to win his second Indy 500 in three years on May 26 after
last year's controversial runner-up finish.

KCChiefs.com -&nbsp;&nbsp;The National Football League announced the regular season schedule for the 2024 season on Wednesday. The Chiefs are currently slated to play in eight standalone games, including five primetime contests, with GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium playing host to six.

The reigning back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Chiefs will kick off the 2024 season and hang their Super Bowl LVIII banner on the NFL's Kickoff night against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Sept. 5 for a rematch of last year's AFC Championship Game. This year's regular season schedule features nine games vs. opponents with winning records in 2023 and seven games vs. opponents who made the 2023 playoffs. The combined 2023 record of Kansas City's 2024 home and away opponents is 145-144-0 (.502). This year's slate features the Chiefs in contests on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Following the NFL's opening game, the Chiefs will host the Cincinnati Bengals in the second of two home games to open the 2024 season. The club then hits the road for two games, first in Atlanta for NBC's Sunday Night Football and then to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in Week 4. It will mark the first AFC West matchup as the Chiefs continue their quest for a ninth-consecutive AFC West title.

The Chiefs then return home to play the New Orleans Saints for the club's first of two Monday Night Football showdowns. The Chiefs will then enjoy their Bye Week during Week 6. It is the team's earliest Bye Week since 2016 when they had a Week 5 Bye. The Chiefs return to action Week 7 in San Francisco for a Super Bowl LVIII rematch. On Oct. 27, the Chiefs will face the Las Vegas Raiders for a Week 8 matchup. The Chiefs will come home to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for a two-game stretch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ESPN's Monday Night Football on Nov. 4 then the Denver Broncos at noon on Nov. 10.

Week 11 is an AFC Divisional Round Game rematch in Buffalo as the Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 17. The Chiefs will then face the Carolina Panthers on the road on Nov. 24. The Chiefs will play on Black Friday for the first time ever, taking on their AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, at 2 p.m. on Amazon Prime Video.

Week 14 will close out the Chiefs slated primetime matchups with Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs then head to Cleveland to face the Browns on Dec. 15 before taking on the defending AFC South champions, the Houston Texans, in Week 16 on Saturday, Dec. 21. The Chiefs will play in the first-ever Wednesday NFL game on Christmas Day against the Pittsburgh Steelers at 12 p.m. on Netflix. The Chiefs will close out the regular season by taking on the Broncos in Denver. The date and time are to be determined.

In addition to the announcement of the club's regular season schedule, the NFL also released the Chiefs preseason schedule. The Chiefs will hit the road to face the Jacksonville Jaguars for Week 1 of the preseason. The final two preseason games will be played at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, first against the Detroit Lions and the second against the Chicago Bears. KSHB, the home for Chiefs preseason football games, will hold the broadcasts.

The reigning back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Chiefs will kick off the 2024 season and hang their Super Bowl LVIII banner on the NFL's Kickoff night against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday Sept. 5 for a rematch of last year's AFC Championship Game. This year's regular season schedule features nine games vs. opponents with winning records in 2023 and seven games vs. opponents who made the 2023 playoffs. The combined 2023 record of Kansas City's 2024 home and away opponents is 145-144-0 (.502). This year's slate features the Chiefs in contests on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.Following the NFL's opening game, the Chiefs will host the Cincinnati Bengals in the second of two home games to open the 2024 season. The club then hits the road for two games, first in Atlanta for NBC's Sunday Night Football and then to Los Angeles to face the Chargers in Week 4. It will mark the first AFC West matchup as the Chiefs continue their quest for a ninth-consecutive AFC West title.The Chiefs then return home to play the New Orleans Saints for the club's first of two Monday Night Football showdowns. The Chiefs will then enjoy their Bye Week during Week 6. It is the team's earliest Bye Week since 2016 when they had a Week 5 Bye. The Chiefs return to action Week 7 in San Francisco for a Super Bowl LVIII rematch. On Oct. 27, the Chiefs will face the Las Vegas Raiders for a Week 8 matchup. The Chiefs will come home to GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium for a two-game stretch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on ESPN's Monday Night Football on Nov. 4 then the Denver Broncos at noon on Nov. 10.Week 11 is an AFC Divisional Round Game rematch in Buffalo as the Chiefs take on the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 17. The Chiefs will then face the Carolina Panthers on the road on Nov. 24. The Chiefs will play on Black Friday for the first time ever, taking on their AFC West rival, the Las Vegas Raiders, at 2 p.m. on Amazon Prime Video.Week 14 will close out the Chiefs slated primetime matchups with Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Chargers at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs then head to Cleveland to face the Browns on Dec. 15 before taking on the defending AFC South champions, the Houston Texans, in Week 16 on Saturday, Dec. 21. Chiefs 2024 Regular Season Schedule Finalized

When the NFL schedule gets released, fans and commentators obsess over how many prime-time appearances teams will make.

However, the biggest competition and most attention when it comes to formulating the schedule each year is the late afternoon window for Fox and CBS.

The 4:25 p.m. Sunday spot is the most-viewed game of the week. Last season for the first time in many years, CBS edged Fox in the showcase window.

CBS averaged 24.64 million viewers in their 10 doubleheader weeks while Fox averaged 24.62 million.

With the importance of that spot, it isn't a surprise the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys will be showcased often.

Fox received the most-desired game on the schedule with the Chiefs visiting the San Francisco 49ers on Oct. 20. It will mark the first time since Fox started carrying the NFL in 1994 that it has a Super Bowl rematch.

It is also the only regular-season Chiefs game Fox will carry.

"We think a lot about having one good Kansas City game, and we got the best one of them all,” said Mike Mulvihill, Fox president for insights and analytics.

With the league shying away from putting rematches on the same network that aired the Super Bowl, CBS made Chiefs-Bills its top request.

The Nov. 17 game in Buffalo, a rematch of last season's AFC divisional round game, marks the fifth straight year Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen will meet in the regular season.

“We felt like as the home of the AFC, we should continue to tell that story,” CBS Sports CEO and President David Berson said.

CBS will also feature Kansas City's Sept. 15 game against Cincinnati and Sept. 29 at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Dallas gets the top treatment on Fox three times the first six weeks. The Cowboys' Sept. 8 opener at Cleveland marks the first time since 2019 Fox has had them in Week 1. It also has them hosting Baltimore on Sept. 22 and Detroit on Oct. 13.

Fox also returns to having the exclusive Week 1 doubleheader as the Cowboys-Browns game will be Tom Brady's debut as an analyst.

“I just feel like with what we’ve got for our showcase window in the first half of the season, that’s about as close to a best-case scenario as it could be for us,” Mulvihill said. "We made it a point with the league that we wanted to establish a stronger narrative in September.”

Besides the Chiefs, Berson also has some strong NFC matchups for the late window, including Dallas at Philadelphia on Nov. 10 — one of three Eagles appearances in CBS's doubleheader window — and Green Bay at the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 6.

Both networks will have doubleheaders on Dec. 15 — instead of Week 1 — and the last week of the regular season on Jan. 5.

“Is it better to do it later in the season when you have a better sense of where all the teams are and how to get the right teams into those windows?” said Hans Schroeder, the executive vice president of NFL Media. “We continue to tweak and evolve. If teams play their way on, we have a chance to look at that we wouldn't have in Week 1."

After Aaron Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles tendon injury on the first drive of the season, the league might have learned its lesson when it came to scheduling appearances for the top quarterback in free agency.

Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons will make four prime-time appearances — three in the first five weeks. The Falcons are at Philadelphia on Monday night on Sept. 16, host Kansas City on NBC's “Sunday Night Football” six days later and face Tampa Bay on “Thursday Night Football” on Oct. 2.

Last year the Jets had six prime-time games, including the Monday night opener when Rodgers was hurt on the fourth snap of his debut with New York.

Amazon Prime Video's third season has division matchups for 12 of its 16 games, up from five last season.

Six teams will appear twice on “Thursday Night Football” after the league adjusted its policy last year. When Thursday night games became a season-long package in 2012, the league mandated all teams would play at least once.

The schedule begins with Bills at Dolphins on Sept. 12, Patriots at Jets on Sept. 19 and Cowboys at Giants on Sept. 26.

This year's Black Friday game is Las Vegas at Kansas City on Nov. 29.

“In general, there's a lot of upside with divisional matchups," said Jeff Kaiser, Amazon Prime Video’s head of sports programming. "It's nice to see the balance and the way it’s spread across the season. There should be intrigue with teams within divisions fighting for playoff spots.”

San Francisco bookends the “Monday Night Football" package. The 49ers host the Jets in the season opener on Sept. 9 and then host Detroit on Dec. 30 in a rematch of the NFC championship game.

Six teams will make multiple Monday night appearances. Of the 25 games on ABC, ESPN and ESPN+, 11 are interconference matchups but Rosalyn Durant, ESPN's executive vice president for programming and acquisitions, likes the strength and depth of the schedule.

“We have the Chiefs twice, we have the Cowboys twice in Dallas. We have strong matchups throughout the schedule,” she said. “There are plenty of storylines that should have broad appeal.”

ESPN also has the Harbaugh Bowl three days before Thanksgiving on Nov. 25, when John Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens take on Jim Harbaugh's Chargers in Los Angeles. Many thought that might be a Thanksgiving night or Christmas game.

Due to last year’s writers strike, ABC carried most of the Monday night schedule, but it returns to four simulcasts and three exclusive games. ABC also has both Week 18 Saturday matchups.

Last year, the odds of a Chicago-Houston matchup being on NBC's “Sunday Night Football” would have been staggering. But with the Bears taking Caleb Williams with the top pick in this year's draft and C.J. Stroud leading the Texans to the divisional round of the playoffs last year, it will get the prime time treatment on Sept. 15.

“That's a matchup any football fan wants to take in and look at maybe the future of the league," NBC Sports President Rick Cordella said.

NBC's first six games feature strong quarterback matchups, especially the three in Week 1 with Baltimore's Lamar Jackson visiting Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes in the Sept. 5 Kickoff Game; Green Bay's Jordan Love taking on Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts in Brazil the next night on Peacock; and the Rams' Matthew Stafford facing Detroit's Jared Goff on Sept. 8.

NFL's late Sunday afternoon doubleheader window continues to get the most scrutiny and viewers

SEATTLE (AP) — Ty France homered for the second time in three games, Bryan Woo allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings for his first win and the Seattle Mariners beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Wednesday.

The Mariners took two of three from the Royals and have won eight of their last nine series. Seattle will head out on a key 10-game road trip on the East Coast four games above .500 and leading the AL West.

France hit a solo shot off Kansas City starter Alec Marsh in the fourth inning to give Seattle a 2-0 lead. France also homered on Monday in the series opener.

Seattle also got an unearned run in the second inning after Adam Frazier was unable to cleanly field Luis Urías’ grounder behind third base with the bases loaded, and the Mariners added on two key runs late. Josh Rojas had a two-out RBI single in the seventh inning and Luke Raley added an RBI single in the eighth.

“The add-on runs today were huge. Guys just kept grinding through knowing that we have to have good at-bats," Seattle manager Scott Servais said. "We got some big hits.”

While Woo was terrific, Andrés Muñoz came through late, getting the final five outs for his seventh save. He also pitched around an error by Urías in the ninth. It was his second five-out save of the season.

Muñoz said his approach has changed a bit since the start of the season.

“I was a little more cautious about throw the pitch here, throw the pitch here," Muñoz said. "What I changed was just throw the ball the hardest that I can right in the middle. Obviously I don't want to hit the middle, but that is my mentality right now.”

Woo (1-0) cruised through the first five innings allowing only one hit, before running into a jam in the sixth inning. Woo had a long fifth inning in the dugout due to an umpire change between the top and bottom of the inning, as home plate umpire Jim Wolf was replaced for precautionary reasons after taking a foul ball off the facemask.

When Woo returned for the sixth, he wasn’t as sharp and immediately ran into trouble with two singles and a walk. Bobby Witt Jr. delivered a sacrifice fly to score Freddy Fermin, but reliever Gabe Speier ended the threat by getting a foul pop out from Vinny Pasquantino and struck out Salvador Perez to end the inning.

Woo struck out five and walked only one. His first start of the season last Friday had been cut short due to tightness in his right forearm following a long inning in the dugout.

“You have to learn. I think today we did a really good job adjusting from obviously the last start and came up with some good ideas of how to stay hot between innings,” Woo said.

Witt also had an RBI groundout in the eighth that scored Fermin.

“You got to try to capitalize. You know they’re going to be generally low-scoring games when you play these guys,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “They have a good pitching staff and we put ourselves in a couple spots to do some good things.”

Marsh (3-1) allowed just one earned run but took his first loss of the season. He struck out seven and has allowed just two earned runs in his past four starts combined.

Mariners: 2B Jorge Polanco (hamstring) and DH Mitch Garver (back) were out of the lineup for a second straight day. Both could return Friday in Baltimore.

Both teams are off on Thursday. The Royals return home to open a three-game series with Oakland on Friday, while Seattle starts a 10-game road trip in Baltimore on Friday.

Mariners beat the Royals 4-2

Sophomore Reece Hemmerling tossed a career high nine-inning complete game to power the Barton Community College baseball team to an opening Plains District Tournament victory over Hutchinson Community College on Wednesday afternoon at Eck Stadium in Wichita, KS.

The 10th seeded Cougars notched their seventh straight in a row to move into the winner's bracket of the eight-team double-elimination tournament with a 5-3 victory over the second-seeded and Jayhawk West champion Blue Dragons.

The Cougars (40-19) advance to the winner bracket semifinals to face third seeded Cowley College for the second straight year at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Thursday while the Blue Dragons (46-12) look to keep their season alive with a 10:00 a.m. first pitch against KJCCC West foe Dodge City.

Robby Bolin's leadoff triple on the first pitch would be one of two hits from the Cougars in the opening five-innings. Owen Clyne's first of three runs drove in one-batter later coming on a sacrifice-fly gifted Barton an early 1-0 lead.

Back-to-back run producing doubles following a leadoff single by the Blue Dragons in the bottom of the second gifted Hutchinson with their lone lead of 2-1.

Held in check succeeding Ayden Hadley's 10-pitch single coming with one-out in the second, Barton's next 11-batters sent to the plate would be retired before Cole Schieffer's reaching on the lone error of the game manufactured a key two run sixth inning. Bolin's reaching of a bunt single, followed by a one-out bases clearing Clyne triple pushed the Cougars in front for a 3-2 lead.

6-foot-8 forward who played every game as a freshman for James

The Kansas Shrine Bowl is headed back to Dodge City for the second time in 2025. The Kansas Shrine Bowl Board of Directors announced the 52nd Kansas Shrine Bowl presented by Mammoth will be played on Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Memorial Stadium in Dodge City. 

“We are excited to bring the Kansas Shrine Bowl back to Dodge City,” said Brice Kesler, Executive Director of the Kansas Shrine Bowl. “The beautiful renovations to Memorial Stadium will provide a great host for our game and create the type of experience we want for our participants.”

Dodge City previously hosted the Kansas Shrine Bowl in 2019, bringing the event to Southwest Kansas for the first time. 

"We're thrilled to welcome the Kansas Shrine Bowl back to Dodge City," said Megan Welsh, director of the Dodge City Convention and Visitors Bureau. "Hosting an event of this magnitude wouldn't be possible without the incredible support of our community partners. In addition to hosting the Kansas Shrine Bowl All-Star football game, the week of the Kansas Shrine Bowl includes an all-star cheer camp, an all-state band camp, hospital experience event, golf tournament, parade, alumni events, the Friday Night All-Star Showcase Event and more.

Dodge City to host 2025 Kansas Shrine Bowl

Great Bend High School will host a Class 5A track and field regional Thursday. Field events begin at 2 p.m. with preliminary races on the track beginning at 5 p.m. The top four finishers from each event will qualify for the Kansas State High School Track and Field Championships held at Wichita State University's Cessna Stadium on May 24-25.

Based on regular-season rankings, here are some of the top times and marks among the athletes in competition Thursday:

Girls The Lady Panthers have won three-straight regional titles. Teams from eight other schools will be pushing to end that streak, perhaps most notably, Salina Central.

100m dash: Newton's Mackenzie Sauerwein and Salina Central's Elle Denning are ranked No. 4 and 5 in the class, respectively. Hays also has a pair of sprinters in the top 16.

200m dash: Sauerwein is ranked No. four in the class, followed by Denning at No. 7. Hays' Kamryn McCall is ranked No. 11.

400m dash: The GB regional will feature four ranked sprinters, led by Valley Center's Laney Hooper at No. 3. Goddard's Leah LaPlant and Newton's Maisie Brubacher are also top-seven sprinters.

800m run: Great Bend's power has been in the distance events. Salina Central freshman Kaylie Schultz enters at No. 6 in 5A (2:19.94), with Great Bend senior Eliana Beckham ranked No. 9 (2:20.35). Salina South's Ava Lemaster is ranked No. 11 at 2:21. Lady Panthers Reese Bullard and Sienna Smith could push for the fourth qualifying spot with Bullard's season-best at 2:25.

1600m run: Salina Central junior Katelyn Rupe has already committed to North Carolina and ranks No. 15 all-time in Kansas at 4:54.45 this year. Her freshman teammate Schultz is ranked No. 6 in Kansas this spring (5:00.17). Great Bend senior Addy Nicholson ranks No. 14 in 5A (5:21), and Smith has gone as fast as 5:30 this spring.

3200m run: Rupe is better in longer races, and her 10:17 at the KU Relays last month ranks No. 6 all-time in Kansas and No. 2 in the state this year. Schultz ranks No. 4 in Kansas at 10:32. Those are the only two ranked runners in the Great Bend field, with Nicholson entering with a season-best 11:46 and Marissa Boone at 11:54.

100m hurdles: The GB regional features four of the top 13 hurdlers in 5A this spring, with Salina South's Tamia Cheeks at No. 4 (15.41) and Hays' Lyndi Zimmerman at No. 5 (15.46). Lady Panther senior Sadie Spray has made strides in her return to the event with a season-best of 16.43, which trails fourth-seeded Anai Fernandez of Newton by 0.35s.

300m hurdles: Lady Panther senior Kenzie Premer is the reigning three-time state runner-up in the event. With Premer out, the torch falls to Spray, who enters ranked No. 12 in 5A (48.56). She will be the No. 3 seed out of four top-16 hurdlers at the regional. Cheeks and Zimmerman are ranked No. 9 and 10, respectively.

4x1: The GB regional features four of the top 13 teams in 5A, led by Hays at No. 5.

4x4: Great Bend leads a field of three ranked teams at the regional. The Lady Panthers are ranked No. 9 in 5A (4:10.47) with No. 13 Valley Center clocking in at a best of 4:11.67.

4x8: Great Bend's marquee event on the track this season has been the 4x8. The Lady Panther team of Beckham, Bullard, Smith, and Kate Welcher posted a school-record 9:39.52 that ranks No. 3 in 5A and No. 7 all-class this year. Great Bend's season-best is 28 seconds faster than eighth-ranked Valley Center.

High jump: Hays junior Katie Linenberger cleared the state bar last May at 5-4 to claim second place behind Great Bend's Valarie Luna, who graduated last year. Spray also cleared 5-4 to finish third in the field. She recently tied that personal best to tie for No. 12 all-class this spring. At the same meet, Linenberger cleared 5-6 to tie at No. 5 all-class. South's Cheeks has also cleared 5-4 this year. The GB regional features seven of the top 15 jumpers in 5A this year. Junior Cassie Ellegood, another state qualifier last year, enters as the No. 4 seed at 5-2.

Long jump: The GB regional is again loaded with six of the top 13 jumpers in 5A. Hays freshman Lynsi Kanak and senior Lilian McGrath have each gone further than 17-7.

Triple jump: South's Cheeks is ranked No. 2 in 5A at 37-0. The GB regional will feature four of the top 14 jumpers in 5A.

Javelin: Lady Panther senior Macy Nachtigal has been the 5A leader for most of the season. Her best throw of 141-4 leads the class by seven feet and ranks No. 5 all-class. Hays' Rylen Harrington is ranked No. 2 in 5A (134-5), and Great Bend will see six of the top-15 throwers in 5A.

Shot put: Goddard-Eisenhower's Leah Wilkinson and Stella Kitt rank No. 1 and 3, respectively, in 5A. Wilkinson's top throw of 43-6 ranks No. 5 all-class. The GB regional features five of the top 13 throwers in 5A, with the No. 15 ranking at 36-11. Lady Panther sophomore Allie Gerhart has a best toss of 35-8.

Discus: The GB regional is loaded with five of the top six throwers in 5A, all with throws of at least 126-7. Eisenhower's Wilkinson is ranked No. 6 all-class at 140-4. In all, seven of the top 16 throwers in 5A will be in Great Bend. Lady Panther sophomore Kimberly Hofflinger has a season-best of 115-10.

Pole vault: The GB regional is again tough with seven of the top 15 vaulters in 5A. Salina South's Bethany Hicklin and Salina Central's Anna Hogeland are ranked No. 1 and 2 in the class, respectively, at 11-1 and 11-0. Great Bend freshman Kayle Baldwin has a best height of 9-0.

Boys 100m dash: The GB regional features six of the top 16 sprinters in 5A. Valley Center's Tyler Mankse ranks No. 4 at 10.75, and Goddard's Micah Johnson sits at No. 5 (10.78), but both of those times are from April. Hays senior Malik Bah ranks No. 16 but ran a season-best 11-flat last week.

200m dash: Five of the top 16 sprinters will be in Great Bend. Manske again leads the way at No. 5 in 22.10, closely followed by Hutchinson's Christopher Lachenmeier. Salina Central's Kamryn Jones is also ranked in both the 100m and 200m dashes.

400m dash: The GB regional features just two ranked sprinters at No. 14 and 15. Great Bend's Ramiro Rocho has a season-best of 51.61, which is just half a second slower than the ranked times.

800m run: There are no ranked runners at the GB regional. A 1:59.38 was required to crack the top 16 in 5A this spring. Great Bend's Ismael Ramirez and Braylon Moore both have best times of 2:03.

1600m run: The GB regional again features no ranked runners. A time of 4:27.60 was needed to make the top 16. Ramirez has a season-best of 4:37.18, and Tavon Stroup has gone as fast as 4:41.41.

3200m run: The 2-mile again features no ranked runners in the GB field. A 9:43.55 was good enough for the No. 16 spot in 5A this spring. Stroup has a best time of 10:17.70.

100m hurdles: The GB regional will feature three of the top 13 hurdlers in 5A, led by Goddard's Tyson Wallace at No. 7 (14.73) and Eisenhower's Justus Reynolds at No. 8 (14.91).

300m hurdles: Wallace and Reynolds are the top-two hurdlers in 5A this spring. Wallace ranks No. 4 all-class at 38.92, and Reynolds ranks No. 6 all-class at 38.97. Hays' Carson Avery is ranked in both 5A hurdle events.

4x1: The GB regional features four of the top 11 teams in 5A, and Eisenhower is ranked No. 15 in the class. Goddard ranks No. 7 all-class at 42.47.

4x4: Five of the top 15 teams in 5A will be in Great Bend. Hutchinson ranks No. 4 in the class at 3:25.30, closely followed by Salina South.

4x8: The Panthers enter with a season-best of 8:25.66 to rank No. 10 in Class 5A as the No. 2 seed at the regional behind Valley Center, ranked No. 9. Salina Central is ranked No. 13.

Discus: The GB regional will feature six of the top 14 throwers in 5A. Goddard's Matrix Eames ranks No. 2 in 5A at 172-3, which ranks No. 7 all-class. Great Bend's Conner Holliday has a season-best of 139-9 to trail the final ranked thrower in Great Bend by seven feet.
