TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Caleb Love trotted back, head down, shoulders slumped after the latest of his missed 3-pointers clanged back rim. This was not his night — until it was. Known for taking and making big shots, Love hit one of the biggest of his career — and Arizona’s season — with a tying heave from beyond halfcourt at the end of regulation. He wasn’t done, adding two more 3s in overtime to send Arizona to an improbable 86-75 win over No. 3 Iowa State on Monday. “Best moment of my life,” said Love, who finished with 22 points. “Obviously, it wasn’t going our way throughout the game, but you’ve got to trust your work, to stay confident.” Love has never lacked moxie. The 6-foot-4 senior made a name for himself for making big shots in three seasons at North Carolina. He led the Tar Heels to the 2022 national title game by scoring 30 points against UCLA in the Sweet 16, then 22 of his 28 in the second half against Duke in the Final Four.
NEW YORK (AP) — Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans got his 11th straight 1,000-yard season — and now he’s a Pro Bowler for the sixth time. Evans was named to the Pro Bowl Games on Monday as a replacement player after spots were vacated by this year’s Super Bowl participants — the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs — and because of injuries. With his sixth selection, Evans ties former Buccaneers fullback Mike Alstott for the most in franchise history. He missed three full games and much of a fourth because of a hamstring injury but finished with 1,004 receiving yards thanks to a 9-yard catch late in the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay’s season finale. Also Monday, Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson was named to his first Pro Bowl. He takes the place of Eagles star Saquon Barkley.
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Connor McDavid and Corey Perry scored in the second period and the Edmonton Oilers rallied to beat the Seattle Kraken 4-2 on Monday night for their third straight win. Mattias Ekholm had a goal and an assist, and Mattias Janmark also scored for the Oilers. who have won 11 of 14 and oved back into first place in the Pacific Division — one point ahead of idle Vegas. Calvin Pickard had 26 saves. Eeli Tolvanen and Vince Dunn scored for the Kraken who led 2-1 after one period but lost for the second time in three games. Joey Daccord stopped 27 shots. McDavid, back in the Oilers’ lineup after a three-game suspension for cross-checking Vancouver’s Conor Garland, tied the score 2-2 at 1:57 of the second. Perry gave Edmonton the lead for good at 9:38.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — The University of Florida has cleared men’s basketball coach Todd Golden following a four-month Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment and stalking. The school released a statement Monday saying no evidence was found and it ended its investigation. It comes amid No. 5 Florida’s best season in a decade, with the Gators winning 18 of their first 20 games. “The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to ensure that due process is upheld for everyone,” university spokesman Steve Orlando said in a statement. “After a thorough investigation that included dozens of interviews over the past months, the University of Florida has found no evidence that Todd Golden violated Title IX. The Title IX office has closed its investigation.” Golden previously sidestepped chances to deny the allegations “out of the respect to the process” and threatened legal action, presumably against his accusers, who weren’t publicly named. He also recently ripped proceedings that are supposed to be confidential.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin is looking into a former women’s basketball player’s allegations that she was mistreated by coach Marisa Moseley and her staff, the school said Monday. Ball State center Tessa Towers, who played for Wisconsin from 2022-24, alleged in a TikTok post over the weekend that her freshman year was “completely ruined.” “My freshman year of college, I felt like a lab rat for my coaches and staff because they would put me on new medications every other week,” Towers wrote in captions over photos of her in a Wisconsin uniform. “I was 17 years old.” Moseley is 44-68 in four seasons at Wisconsin, which hasn’t finished a season above .500 since 2010-11.
