As the top-ranked team in the state's largest classification, Garden City will win a lot of matches this fall. Great Bend's Senior Night Tuesday just happened to be against the Buffaloes, who cruised to a 61-14 win.
Panther junior Trent Kern pulled off the biggest win of the night at 215 pounds. Ranked No. 4 in Class 5A, Kern was able to pin second-ranked David Holguin midway through the third period. Kern dominated the match throughout, leading 12-3 after two periods.
Including an open match at 106 pounds, Garden City scored the first 24 points of the evening before Hayden Liles was able to win a 10-3 decision at 132 pounds. The Buffs entered the night ranked No. 2 at 106 pounds and No. 1 at both 113 and 120 pounds. Panther freshman Cal Schartz, ranked No. 4 in 5A, made it to the final minute of his match against Braydon Pacheco at 113 pounds.
Garden City extended its lead to 43-3 before third-ranked Jace Schartz tech-falled his opponent at 165 pounds.
Ambrose Kramer was pinned by top-ranked Matthew Long at 120 pounds. Logan Turner was pinned at 126 pounds, and sixth-ranked Triston Tomlinson was pinned at 138 pounds.
The Buffs were also stacked in the middle weights. Second-ranked Logan Avalon pinned Trevin Maciel at 144 pounds. Sixth-ranked Hayden Kelly went the distance with third-ranked Saben Herrera but lost 8-0 at 150 pounds. At 157 pounds, Isaac Guerrero needed just 21 seconds to beat Blake Stein.
Maxx Steffan made it to the third period before losing by fall at 175 pounds, and sixth-ranked Dio Holguin pinned Brady Mendez at 190 pounds. Josue Bustamante was pinned by second-ranked Brayden Hill in the heavyweight match with just four seconds left in the second period.
