MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ryan Jeffers homered twice and Carlos Correa added a two-out, bases-clearing triple in the sixth inning and the Minnesota Twins rallied from a four-run deficit for a 7-6 win over the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

Reliever Chris Stratton (2-3) allowed pinch-hitter Max Kepler's RBI single and walked two batters to load the bases with two outs.

Correa lifted a 3-1 fastball down the right-field line to break a 4-4 tie. It was Correa's second triple of the season.

Jeffers’ first home run of the game, a two-run blast into the left-field bullpen in the bottom of the fourth, cut the Royals’ 4-0 lead in half. Jeffers, who leads the Twins with 12 home runs, had gone 5 for 43 since his previous homer on May 14.

Reliever Caleb Thielbar (2-1) got the win for the Twins, who took three of four in the series.

Vinnie Pasquantino and MJ Melendez each homered for Kansas City. Starting pitcher Daniel Lynch IV allowed two earned runs in five innings just hours after being called up from Triple-A Omaha.

Scheduled Kansas City starter Brady Singer was scratched because of illness shortly before the 12:10 p.m. game. Lynch allowed five hits, including both Jeffers home runs, and struck out two in his second big-league start this season.

Back in the lineup two days after a first-base collision with Byron Buxton, Pasquantino smashed a 1-0 curveball into the second deck of right-field seats to give Kansas City a 2-0 lead in the first. Bobby Witt Jr. added another run with a double to left-center field in the third, and Melendez homered off Twins starter Chris Paddack in the fourth inning over the right-field fence to make it 4-0.

Witt added a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, but Twins closer Jhoan Duran retired Pasquantino on a grounder to the mound to earn his ninth save.

Paddack allowed four earned runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Twins.

Royals: Optioned Carlos Hernández to Triple-A Omaha to make room on the roster for Lynch.

Royals: Right-hander Michael Wacha (4-5, 4.31 ERA) is scheduled to start Friday against Padres right-hander Dylan Cease (5-4, 3.29) in the first of a three-game series in Kansas City.

Twins: Begin a nine-game, 10-day road trip Friday when right-hander Pablo López (4-5, 5.25 ERA) faces Houston right-hander Ronel Blanco (5-0, 1.99).

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Velázquez homered twice, Salvador Perez hit his team-leading 10th homer of the season and the Kansas City Royals snapped a three-game skid with a 6-1 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday night.

Velázquez’s first homer came in Kansas City’s four-run third inning. After Minnesota jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, the Royals countered with four runs off Twins starter Bailey Ober.

Perez drove in the go-ahead run with a double to left, and Veláquez knocked in Perez two batters later with a two-run shot to center for a 4-1 lead.

“The at-bats against Ober were good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I think even early on, you could tell we had an approach. We were trying to get certain pitches we were looking for. Some of them we didn’t miss. When you drive the ball out of the park, you get instant offense, you get instant runs on the board, and you get out to a lead, it really helps.”

Perez hit a solo homer in the fifth inning and Veláquez followed with his seventh homer of the season to give the Royals a 6-1 lead.

That was plenty of run support for Royals right-hander Seth Lugo (9-1), who earned his fourth win in as many starts. Lugo allowed one run on six hits in six innings for his career-best ninth win.

“They’ve got a bunch of good hitters in the lineup, so I couldn’t really get to a part where I could just cruise,” Lugo said. “They made me work out there and they put together a lot of good at-bats. Being able to get six after that and the W, it feels great.”

Lugo's ERA dropped to an MLB-best 1.72, the lowest ERA by a Royals pitcher through 12 starts in team history.

It was the second time this season the Royals roughed up Ober (5-3). The Twins' right-hander also surrendered three homers and eight total runs against Kansas City in his first start of the season on March 31.

Ober allowed six runs on nine hits in five innings on Wednesday.

“Not as sharp as normal Bailey that we get almost every time,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “He had to work hard.”

The victory helped Kansas City avoid what would have been a season-high four-game losing streak. The Royals have lost three straight games three times this season.

Twins third baseman Jose Miranda drove in the game’s first run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field. It was the third straight game in the series that Miranda had the first RBI of the game. He homered in the third inning of Monday’s series opener for a 2-0 lead, and had a two-run single to open the scoring in Tuesday’s win.

Kansas City will send RHP Brady Singer (4-2, 2.70 ERA) to the mound for the series finale. Singer allowed just one earned run in each of his last two starts. Minnesota counters with RHP Chris Paddack (4-2, 4.39), who earned no-decisions in his previous two outings.

— Criminal charges against Scottie Scheffler have been dismissed,
ending a legal saga that began with images of the world’s top
golfer being arrested and handcuffed in Louisville during the PGA
Championship. Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell, a local
prosecutor, asked a judge Wednesday afternoon to drop the four
charges against Scheffler. Scheffler was not required to be in the
courtroom Wednesday. Scheffler was charged with a felony for
assaulting a police officer with his vehicle, along with three
misdemeanors. Scheffler has said he simply misunderstood the commands
coming from traffic officers.

(AP) — Mattias Janmark and Leon Draisaitl scored in a 51-second
span in the second period and the Edmonton Oilers beat the Dallas
Stars 5-2 on Wednesday night in Game 4 to even the Western Conference

Axel Bolander and Kaleb Lambert of the Barton Community College men's golf team received recognition following their performances in the 2023-24 season.

For Bolander, the Cougars' top golfer throughout the year, finished 6th in the Jayhawk Conference individual standings to earn 2nd Team All-KJCCC honors while also receiving PING All-Central District honors in Division I of the NJCAA.

Presented by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), the PING award is the fourth Cougar under Head Coach Doug Kaiser recognizing players among the Division I ranks of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). Bolander joins Thitipon Homruen (2018), Jakkapat Horsangchai (2017), and Natchapol Srinoon (2016).

Placing 4th in the two regular season conference meets, Bolander slipped to 17th at the KJCCC Championship dropping the sophomore into the second wave of conference honors accumulating 13.5 points in the standings.

Bolander began the season winning the Hesston Fall Kickoff on a two-round 6-under par score, carded the program's first ever ace the following week on a 3rd place Crazy Horse Challenge, then rallied from behind to win the Central Kansas Classic at 5-under leading the squad to a program 2nd best ever two-round score of 560.

Picking up his third title of the fall season on a two-round 3-under score at the Hesston Golf Course Shootout, Bolander wrapped up the pre-conference slate with a 3rd placing at the Carmichael Cup.

Placing in the top ten of all fall tournaments including a runner-up finish to Bolander at the Hesston Shootout, Lambert carried the experience into the spring conference season to earn honorable mention All-KJCCC honors.

Having to withdraw from the first conference outing of the year, Lambert placed 14th at the second meet before leading the Cougars at the KJCCC Championships with an 8th place finish to climb onto the conference post-season recognition list.

The pair helped the 20th ranked Cougars to a 4th place finish at the Region VI/Central District Championships to qualify the squad for its first national tournament berth since 2014. Bolander led the way with a 5th placing at Districts with Lambert's even-par start to the three rounds helping Barton get off on solid footing against a field packed of nationally ranked teams.

Barton's Bolander and Lambert earn post-season men's golf awards

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Gibson became Major League Baseball’s career leader with a .372 batting average, surpassing Ty Cobb’s .367, when Negro Leagues records for more than 2,300 players were incorporated Tuesday after a three-year research project.

Gibson’s .466 average for the 1943 Homestead Grays became the season standard, followed by Charlie “Chino” Smith’s .451 for the 1929 New York Lincoln Giants. They overtook the .440 by Hugh Duffy for the National League’s Boston team in 1894.

Gibson also became the career leader in slugging percentage (.718) and OPS (1.177), moving ahead of Babe Ruth (.690 and 1.164).

“It’s a show of respect for great players who performed in the Negro Leagues due to circumstances beyond their control and once those circumstances changed demonstrated that they were truly major leaguers," baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Wednesday in an interview with The Associated Press. “Maybe the single biggest factor was the success of players who played in the Negro Leagues and then came to the big leagues.”

A special committee on baseball records decided in 1969 to recognize six major leagues dating to 1876: the National (which launched in 1876), the American (1901), the American Association (1882-1891), Union Association (1884), Players’ League (1890) and Federal League (1914-1915). It excluded the National Association (1871-75), citing an “erratic schedule and procedures.”

MLB announced in December 2020 that it would be “correcting a longtime oversight” and would add the Negro Leagues. John Thorn, MLB’s official historian, chaired a 17-person committee that included Negro Leagues experts and statisticians.

“The condensed 60-game season for the 2020 calendar year for the National League and American League prompted us to think that maybe the shortened Negro League seasons could come under the MLB umbrella, after all,” Thorn said.

An updated version of MLB’s database will become public before the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants play a tribute game to the Negro Leagues on June 20 at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama.

Baseball Hall of Fame President Josh Rawitch said statistics on Cooperstown plaques will remain the same because they reflect the information available at the time of a player’s induction.

Standards for season leaders is the same for Negro Leagues as the other leagues: 3.1 plate appearances or one inning for each game played by a player's team.

Gibson’s .974 slugging percentage in 1937 becomes the season record, and Barry Bonds’ .863 in 2001 dropped to fifth, also trailing Mules Suttles' .877 in 1926, Gibson’s .871 in 1943 and Smith’s .870 in 1929.

Bond’s prior OPS record of 1.421 in 2004 dropped to third behind Gibson’s 1.474 in 1937 and 1.435 in 1943.

Willie Mays gained 10 hits from the 1948 Birmingham Black Barons, increasing his total to 3,293. Minnie Minoso surpassed 2,000 hits, credited with 150 for the New York Cubans from 1946-1948 that boosted his total to 2,113.

Jackie Robinson, who broke MLB’s color barrier with the 1947 Dodgers, was credited with 49 hits with the 1945 Kansas City Monarchs that increased his total to 1,567.

Among pitchers, Satchel Paige gained 28 wins that raised his total to 125.

The committee met six times and dealt with issues such as when compiled league statistics didn’t make sense, such as a league having more wins than losses and walks that were missing. Researchers had to identify whether players with the same name were one person or separate, tracking dates of birth, and identify people listed by nicknames. Documenting transactions and identifying ballparks in a time when neutral sites often were used is ongoing, along with uncovering statistics for independent teams.

“We made the decision at a point in time that we became convinced that it was possible to get accurate statistics that could be appropriately integrated into our record books,” Manfred said.

Kevin Johnson and Gary Ashwill, researchers who had spent nearly two decades helping assemble the Seamheads Negro Leagues Database, were included in the project.

Thorn estimated 72% of Negro Leagues records from 1920-1948 are included and additional research might lead to future modifications. Thorn said a four-homer game by Gibson in 1938 and a home run by Mays in August 1948 could not be included because complete game accounts have not been found.

“Without a box score, we can’t really balance the statistics,” Johnson said. “Those games are kind of in limbo at the moment.”

Records include the first Negro National League (1920-31), Eastern Colored League (1923-28), American Negro League (1929), East-West League (1932), Negro Southern League (1932), second Negro National League (1933-48) and Negro American League (1937-48).

Josh Gibson becomes MLB career and season batting leader as Negro Leagues statistics incorporated

Three members of the 10th ranked Barton Community College women's golf team received All-KJCCC recognition following their performances during the 2023-24 conference season.

Butpapaporn Sukterm led the selections in coming out on top of the individual standings as Valentina Leyva also made the 1st team honors while Andrea Peraza landed on the 2nd team.

Compiling 32.5 points to lead second place finisher Dodge City's Gaemphuang Ketrahong's 31 points, Sukterm captured the second meet of the season with runner-up finishes in the other two conference match-ups of the year.

Ranked 4th nationally, Sukterm's meet championship came on a 3-under score at Garden City's Southwind Country Club as the freshman would compile an 8-over total in six rounds of the conference season.

Earlier in the fall season Sukterm began her collegiate campaign with a 2-over, 13-stroke debut victory before rewriting the program record book the following meet with a single round record 9-under par and a 12-under two-round total. Sukterm would capture five tournament titles including closing out the fall portion of the schedule with a 6-under two-round score carrying the momentum through a five month break into conference season.

Leyva was a steady 1st team performer all conference season, picking up a pair of fifth placings with a 7th spot sandwiched between as Peraza hovered in the 10th and final position of the 2nd Team honors with 10th, 9th, and 11th placings.

Like Sukterm, Leyva and Peraza each had a solid fall season building a foundation for the spring.

Leyva finished runner-up to Sukterm in a pair of meets, a fourth in another, with a 7th and 8th placing to her fall credit. Fellow sophomore Peraza started off hot and continued with a great fall season with a pair of runner-up placings, another pair of 3rd places, with one tournament finishing just outside of the top ten of a 51-competitor field.

Most recently the trio helped led Barton back to the NJCAA National Championships for the program's 13th straight appearance for an eventual 12th placing on the national stage held in Melbourne, Florida at the Duran Country Club.

Sukterm challenged for the individual title, firing a program national tournament record 6-under par in the final round to finish the four rounds even par, two strokes behind the leader, while carding a week's total of a program best 16 birdies and just 11 holes of bogey or worse.

Three Cougars garnering All-KJCCC Women's Golf awards

Barton Community College baseball sophomore outfielder Robby Bolin earned a trio of postseason honors and led a group of six Cougar Baseball players to garner Jayhawk Conference and/or Region VI awards on the 2024 teams, which were announced this week.

The sophomore from Topeka, Kansas, and University of Nebraska commit, earned first-team All-KJCCC and first-team All-Region VI honors as well as a Region VI Gold Glove award.

Infielder Owen Clyne was named to the All-KJCCC first-team, second-team All-Region VI and All Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team. 

Starting pitcher Reece Hemmerling was named to the second-team All-KJCCC and was selected onto the Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team, while shortstop Jaron Cotton, catcher Grant Nottlemann and pitcher Ethan Minaker were named All-Jayhawk West honorable mentions.

ROBBY BOLIN – KJCCC West MVP | 1st Team All-KJCCC West | 1st Team All-Region VI | Region VI Gold Glove: Outfield

Bolin is Barton's second to be named Jayhawk West MVP in the last three seasons joining Alex Rodgers in 2022. He is the second Cougar MVP in head coach Brent Biggs tenure.

Bolin became the second Cougar to win the Jayhawk Conference batting championship since Rodgers .443 best average in 2022.

The centerfielder hit .464 with 104 total hits, 20 doubles, six triples, four home runs and 49 RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Bolin scored 95 runs, walked 36 times, was planked by 18 pitches and had a team-high 43 stolen bases in 47 attempts this season.

Bolin held a team high 24 game hitting streak and pieced together another 16 and eight game streak this season. The sophomore had 35 multi-hit games, including one five-hit and 10 three-hit games.

In addition to Bolin leading the Jayhawk in batting average, he also led the league and was second in the NJCAA in total hits. He finished tops in the KJCCC runs scored and on-base percentage (.566) while 12th in the KJCCC slugging percentage (.661).

Bolin's 104 hits rank atop the Cougar single-season history book while his 95 runs scored rank second most and his 464. batting average sits sixth best. 

Earning the center field Region VI Gold Glove honor, Bolin fielded at a perfect 1.000% with 125 putouts and four outfield assists. Over his two-year Barton career, he held a .987 defensive percentage committing just three errors with 221 putouts and five defensive assists.

The Topeka, Kansas native finished his two-year career with a .408 batting average 176 hits, 34 doubles, 11 triples, eighth home runs and 90 RBIs. 

OWEN CLYNE – 1st Team All-KJCCC West | 2nd Team All-Region VI | Region VI All-Tournament Team

A sophomore transfer, Clyne made an instant impact in the Barton lineup finishing with the second-most hits and second-highest batting average.

The Maize, Kansas native, hit .401 this season with 19 doubles, three triples, three home runs, 57 runs scored and team high 57 runs driven home. He led the team in walks drawing the program's sixth most single season of 47 for sixth most in the KJCCC while finishing third on the club with 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts.

Clyne went a season best 4 of 4 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs on March 12th against the junior varsity squad of Kansas Wesleyan University. He posted multiple RBI performances in 15 games with six of those games driving in three or more runs.

Clyne had a season high 16 game hitting streak with 22 multi-hit games, including two four-hit performances.

Earning an All-Tournament team honor at the Region VI/Plains District Tournament, the sophomore's biggest moment of the season came against Cowley. Trailing 8-7 and down to their final strike, Clyne delivered an opposite field 0-2 count go-ahead two-RBI single to advance Barton into the winner's semifinal game against top ranked and top seeded Johnson County.

REECE HEMMERLING – 2nd Team All-KJCCC West | Region VI All-Tournament Team

Hemmerling assumed the No. 1 spot in the weekend rotation for the Cougars. The right-hander from Beaumont, Alberta, Canada led the Barton rotation with a team best 9-4 record and 3.65 ERA.

Working a team-high 79.0 innings pitched, Hemmerling went the distance in six of his 13 starts with four complete game shutouts. The sophomore allowed 76 hits, 40 runs and 19 walks with 65 strikeouts this season. Hemmerling posted a record of 5-3 with a 3.89 ERA in eight Jayhawk West starts with three complete games.

Hemmerling's six complete games ranked tops amongst the KJCCC while his 79-innings ranked sixth most in the KJCCC and fifth most in Barton's single-season record book.

Perhaps Hemmerling's best performances came in his final two starts, as the sophomore went the distance in both postseason starts displaying a 2-0 record over 16-innings with a 1.69 ERA, scattering 11 hits, three runs, three walks and eight strikeouts.

Earning All-Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team honors, Hemmerling saved his best outing for the opening round of the Plains/District Tournament working a career high 9.0-inning complete game to help the Cougars knock off second seeded and 10th ranked Hutchinson 5-3.

JARON COTTON – All-KJCCC Honorable Mention

A sophomore shortstop from Leader, TX, Cotton hit .333 in 61 games played, going 70 for 210 at the plate. Cotton led a pair of offensive categories for the Cougars reaching double-figures in home runs with 10 for the ninth most in the program's single season history while driving in 62 runs to rank 5th in the KJCCC West.

Cotton had a .576 slugging percentage with 28 extra base hits, including 15 doubles and three triples to go along with his 10 home runs. 

The sophomore shortstop hit .393 in 32 KJCCC games with 38 RBIs.

GRANT NOTTLEMANN – All-KJCCC Honorable Mention

The sophomore from Lincoln, Nebraska, got off to a slow start with a .262 batting average over his first 30 games. From that point on, Nottlemann turned it on at the plate slashing .469 down the stretch to lead Barton's offense over the final 25 games.

Nottlemann hit .336 this season (45 for 134) with 11 doubles, four triples and one home run. He finished with 37 runs and 26 RBIs. The sophomore supported the team's fourth best .489 on-base percentage fueled behind a team-second most 37 walks. 

The catcher recorded hits in 15 of his final 17 games with six of those manufacturing multi-hits and piecing together a season long nine-game hitting streak.

ETHAN MINAKER – All-KJCCC Honorable Mention

A freshman left-handed pitcher from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Minaker fell into the weekend rotation spot from the start of the season.

Minaker posted a 5-3 record with a 4.28 earned run average in 12 starts. In league games, he went 3-2 with a 4.06 ERA.

Starting pitcher Reece Hemmerling was named to the second-team All-KJCCC and was selected onto the Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team, while shortstop Jaron Cotton, catcher Grant Nottlemann and pitcher Ethan Minaker were named All-Jayhawk West honorable mentions.ROBBY BOLIN – KJCCC West MVP | 1st Team All-KJCCC West | 1st Team All-Region VI | Region VI Gold Glove: OutfieldBolin is Barton's second to be named Jayhawk West MVP in the last three seasons joining Alex Rodgers in 2022. He is the second Cougar MVP in head coach Brent Biggs tenure.Bolin became the second Cougar to win the Jayhawk Conference batting championship since Rodgers .443 best average in 2022.The centerfielder hit .464 with 104 total hits, 20 doubles, six triples, four home runs and 49 RBIs out of the leadoff spot. Bolin scored 95 runs, walked 36 times, was planked by 18 pitches and had a team-high 43 stolen bases in 47 attempts this season.Bolin held a team high 24 game hitting streak and pieced together another 16 and eight game streak this season. The sophomore had 35 multi-hit games, including one five-hit and 10 three-hit games.In addition to Bolin leading the Jayhawk in batting average, he also led the league and was second in the NJCAA in total hits. He finished tops in the KJCCC runs scored and on-base percentage (.566) while 12th in the KJCCC slugging percentage (.661).Bolin's 104 hits rank atop the Cougar single-season history book while his 95 runs scored rank second most and his 464. batting average sits sixth best. Earning the center field Region VI Gold Glove honor, Bolin fielded at a perfect 1.000% with 125 putouts and four outfield assists. Over his two-year Barton career, he held a .987 defensive percentage committing just three errors with 221 putouts and five defensive assists.The Topeka, Kansas native finished his two-year career with a .408 batting average 176 hits, 34 doubles, 11 triples, eighth home runs and 90 RBIs. He led the team in walks drawing the program's sixth most single season of 47 for sixth most in the KJCCC while finishing third on the club with 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts.Clyne went a season best 4 of 4 with a pair of home runs and seven RBIs on March 12th against the junior varsity squad of Kansas Wesleyan University. He posted multiple RBI performances in 15 games with six of those games driving in three or more runs.Clyne had a season high 16 game hitting streak with 22 multi-hit games, including two four-hit performances.Earning an All-Tournament team honor at the Region VI/Plains District Tournament, the sophomore's biggest moment of the season came against Cowley. Trailing 8-7 and down to their final strike, Clyne delivered an opposite field 0-2 count go-ahead two-RBI single to advance Barton into the winner's semifinal game against top ranked and top seeded Johnson County.REECE HEMMERLING – 2nd Team All-KJCCC West | Region VI All-Tournament TeamHemmerling assumed the No. 1 spot in the weekend rotation for the Cougars. The right-hander from Beaumont, Alberta, Canada led the Barton rotation with a team best 9-4 record and 3.65 ERA.Working a team-high 79.0 innings pitched, Hemmerling went the distance in six of his 13 starts with four complete game shutouts. The sophomore allowed 76 hits, 40 runs and 19 walks with 65 strikeouts this season. Hemmerling posted a record of 5-3 with a 3.89 ERA in eight Jayhawk West starts with three complete games.Hemmerling's six complete games ranked tops amongst the KJCCC while his 79-innings ranked sixth most in the KJCCC and fifth most in Barton's single-season record book.Perhaps Hemmerling's best performances came in his final two starts, as the sophomore went the distance in both postseason starts displaying a 2-0 record over 16-innings with a 1.69 ERA, scattering 11 hits, three runs, three walks and eight strikeouts.Earning All-Region VI/Plains District All-Tournament team honors, Hemmerling saved his best outing for the opening round of the Plains/District Tournament working a career high 9.0-inning complete game to help the Cougars knock off second seeded and 10th ranked Hutchinson 5-3.JARON COTTON – All-KJCCC Honorable MentionA sophomore shortstop from Leader, TX, Cotton hit .333 in 61 games played, going 70 for 210 at the plate. Cotton led a pair of offensive categories for the Cougars reaching double-figures in home runs with 10 for the ninth most in the program's single season history while driving in 62 runs to rank 5th in the KJCCC West.Cotton had a .576 slugging percentage with 28 extra base hits, including 15 doubles and three triples to go along with his 10 home runs. The sophomore shortstop hit .393 in 32 KJCCC games with 38 RBIs.GRANT NOTTLEMANN – All-KJCCC Honorable MentionThe sophomore from Lincoln, Nebraska, got off to a slow start with a .262 batting average over his first 30 games. From that point on, Nottlemann turned it on at the plate slashing .469 down the stretch to lead Barton's offense over the final 25 games.Nottlemann hit .336 this season (45 for 134) with 11 doubles, four triples and one home run. He finished with 37 runs and 26 RBIs. The sophomore supported the team's fourth best .489 on-base percentage fueled behind a team-second most 37 walks. The catcher recorded hits in 15 of his final 17 games with six of those manufacturing multi-hits and piecing together a season long nine-game hitting streak.ETHAN MINAKER – All-KJCCC Honorable MentionA freshman left-handed pitcher from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Minaker fell into the weekend rotation spot from the start of the season.Minaker posted a 5-3 record with a 4.28 earned run average in 12 starts. In league games, he went 3-2 with a 4.06 ERA.Over 54.2 innings pitched, the Cougar left-hander struck out 38 and walked 20. Bolin named KJCCC West Most Valuable Player; Six Cougars garner post-season honors

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Simeon Woods Richardson earned his first win in eight starts, Jose Miranda drove in two runs and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Minnesota, winners of six of their last seven games, got two hits apiece from Manuel Margot, Byron Buxton and Carlos Santana.

Jhoan Duran allowed the first two hitters he faced in the ninth to reach base, but helped by Christian Vázquez throwing out a runner trying to steal second, he didn’t allow a run and earned his eighth save. His last two pitches were 102.2 and 103.1 mph.

“In that situation, I got more angry because I don’t want to allow that run to come in. So I got two outs, and I need to put that guy out,” he said.

Kansas City had just five hits to lose its third straight after winning eight in a row. The Royals have dropped 15 of their last 16 at Target Field.

“It was an all-around team win today. It was very quality,” said Woods Richardson (2-0), who allowed three hits and struck out four in five innings for his first win since April 13.

He allowed two or fewer earned runs in seven of his past eight starts, and only once did he receive more than two runs of support. His 2.70 ERA is third among rookies with at least 35 innings pitched, trailing Shota Imanaga of the Cubs (0.84) and Luis Gil of the Yankees (2.11).

“The maturity, the strike throwing, and truly just being able to do different things with different pitches," manager Rocco Baldelli said. "He uses mainly three of those pitches really well, with touch and feel and the stuff is actually good. It’s actually improving. It’s not easy to do, but he’s giving us winning starts.”

After cruising through four innings, Woods Richardson found trouble in the fifth. Nick Loftin walked, advanced to third on Hunter Renfroe’s double, and scored on Garrett Hampson’s single. Kyle Isbel’s groundout plated Renfroe to make it 3-2.

Bobby Witt Jr. flew out to end the threat.

“Runner on third you kind of have to limit the damage, but not give in, so just trying to do that,” said Woods Richardson.

Cole Ragans (4-4), who took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning last Wednesday, struggled early for Kansas City but got through five innings. He allowed nine hits and struck out seven.

The left-hander gave up hits to Minnesota’s first two batters: Margot singled and Carlos Correa doubled. Both scored on Miranda’s single to end Ragans’ 13-inning scoreless streak.

“At the beginning I just wasn’t getting ahead, falling behind, bad counts. They made me pay for it,” Ragans said. “… Overall I left some pitches over the plate and they did damage.”

Back-to-back doubles by Vázquez and Margot made it 3-0 in the fourth.

Royals: 1B Vinnie Pasquantino left the game in the third inning with a lower left leg contusion after fully extending to catch a high throw from 3B Maikel Garcia. He is considered day to day.

Twins: To make room on the 40-man roster for RHP Diego Castillo, whose contract was selected from Triple-A St. Paul, RHP Justin Toba was transferred to the 60-day injured list. He’s been out since March 25 with left patellar tendinitis.

RHP Seth Lugo (8-1, 1.74), who leads the American League in wins and all of baseball in ERA among qualified players, is scheduled to start Wednesday for Kansas City. He’s scheduled to face RHP Bailey Ober (5-2, 4.33).

Woods Richardson gets first win in 8 starts as Twins top Royals 4-2

Ten members from the Barton Community College softball team earned Division I All-KJCCC and All-Region VI post-season honors.

Outfielder Allyson McDougal was named the Most Valuable Player with fellow freshmen utility Elina Bartlett and sophomore shortstop Lani Dryden headlining the selections of first team honors. Sophomore outfielder Mikaila Herring was joined by three freshmen on the second team selections, second baseman Aly Lawrence, third baseman Chloe Enslinger, and pitcher Brooklynn Angielski while sophomores Laci Dryden, Leslie Ramos, and Cameron Pelzel garnered honorable mention honors.

The ten helped the Cougars break a number of program records, placing 3rd in the conference race at 21-11 for its highest finish since 2019 and making the final three of the Region VI Tournament concluding the season at 29-20.

Allyson McDougal – Most Valuable Player, 1st Team Outfielder

McDougal concluded the season with a nine-game hit streak, setting the program record batting .488 on the season on a third all-time best 83 hits in her 49 games played including 27 multi-hit performances.

The freshman from Moore, Oklahoma, also led the squad in on-base percentage (.524), runs scored (63), and total bases (117) while playing a near flawless right field for the Cougars which included countless highlight catches on her .986 fielding percentage.

Second in the conference standings batting .565 against league opponents, McDougal led with 61 hits and 48 runs while ranking second in doubles (14) and on-base percentage (.595), as well as, top five in triples (3), RBI (39), and slugging percentage (.861).

In addition to the nine game hit streak, McDougal also strung streaks of 12 and 14 games, the latter drawing the Week Six KJCCC and NJCAA Player of the Week award.

Lani Dryden – 1st Team Infielder

Dryden anchored the Cougar infield for two seasons at the short stop position while giving the record setting offense a .385 production out of the lower end of the lineup.

Finishing her Barton career on a four-game hit streak, the sophomore from Wichita, Kansas, collected 52 hits including six games of three or more base knocks.

Second on the squad with four sac bunts and third in walks drawn (20), Dryden held a solid .944 fielding percentage in 198 chances, rolling up a team best 67 assists and 9 double plays.

Elina Bartlett – 1st Team Designated Player

Bartlett helped the Cougars in multiple ways either in the lineup for her bat or in the center circle pitching.

Beginning her collegiate career with a 3-for-4 performance, Bartlett went on to bat a team third best .431, just outside the program's top ten best single season average, on a squad second best .715 slugging percentage and five home runs, to go along with, a third most 18 doubles.

In the circle the Cheney, Kansas, freshman made 28 appearances going 9-3 with a save, pitching 70.2 innings in striking out 37 batters including a personal best five punchouts late in the season at Northwest Kansas Technical College.

Mikaila Herring – 2nd Team Outfielder

Herring began her sophomore campaign on a torrid 20-game hit streak, adding in a hit concluding her initial season, to piece the program's second most 21 straight games of collecting at least a base knock.

Settling in for a .447 average starting left field for all 49-games, Herring's performance including 20 doubles both ranking 6th best in program history.

Second to McDougal's plate performance, the Topeka, Kansas, native additionally belted a second best 5 home runs while third on the squad in slugging percentage (.693), total hits (67), total bases (104), walks drawn (20).

Aly Lawrence – 2nd Team Infielder

Like Bartlett, Lawrence filled multiple roles for the Cougars at both the second base position and taking turns in the circle.

At the plate Lawrence connected on a program single season 2nd most 21 doubles, driving in a the 8th most 55 runs in 49 games.

Batting .429, the Wichita, Kansas, freshman put together a 17-game hit streak earlier in the season with twenty-one multi-hit performances.

In the circle Lawrence made 17 appearances going 7-4, pitching 54.1 innings in striking out 22 batters including a personal best four punchouts midway through the season versus Pratt.

Chloe Enslinger – 2nd Team Infielder

Spending most of her time on the diamond at the hot corner, Enslinger also helped fill in at catcher while adding big offensive honors to earn the post-season selection.

Batting .425 in the middle of the lineup, Enslinger led the team with a .799 slugging percentage and 11 home runs to drive in the program's 5th most 60 runs in a single season.

Earning the KJCC's Week 12 Player of the Week honor, the freshman from Derby, Kansas, led the league with 9 home runs against conference opponents and drove in a second most 43 runs.

Brooklynn Angielski – 2nd Team Pitcher

Hampered by injury mid-way through the season, Angielski made an impression with league coaches in her initial collegiate season.

The freshman from Sperry, Oklahoma, was the game one starter when available, finishing the season 9-9 overall pitching 98.0 innings and striking out 73 batters. In league play Angielski was 6-3 in the circle in ranking 6th overall with a 5.89 strikeout per seven innings average.

Laci Dryden – Honorable Mention Outfielder

A mainstay at the top of the lineup, Dryden's transition from left to center field earned the Wichita, Kansas, native her second honorable mention honor.

Reaching base on a .512 percentage, Dryden batted .401 at the top of the lineup on 65 hits including a leading 5 triples concluding her career with the second most all-time 9 three-bag connections.

A Week Nine KJCCC Player of the Week, Dryden drew a program second most 35 walks in setting the record for 59 total free passes while creating havoc on the base paths with a 5th most single season 26 stolen bases to finish her career in the top five with 33 total.

Leslie Ramos – Honorable Mention Catcher

The heart and soul of the team, Ramos' was only out of the lineup in planned rest as the sophomore out of Grand Island, Nebraska, captained the team behind the plate including calling pitches for the young staff in the circle.

Her second honorable mention selection, Ramos batted out of the second slot of the lineup all season with a .380 average with a team leading 9 sacrifice hits to help set up the club's record breaking run production season.

In addition to her team value behind the plate and making sacrifices to advance runners, Ramos also stood her ground in the box to wear 16 badges of honor, second only to her 17 last season, in leaving the program atop the chart on 33 hit by pitches.

Cameron Pelzel – Honorable Mention Infielder
