Lloyd M. Heeke, 89, of Great Bend passed away August 27, 2021, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. He was born Feb. 20, 1932, on the farm Northwest of Lakin, to Henry and Clara (Laudick) Heeke.

Lloyd attended Lakin grade school and high school until enlisting in the United States Air Force. He attained the rank of Airman First Class. In 1953 Lloyd went to work for Kansas, Nebraska Natural Gas Co., Lakin, then transferred to Hooker, Okla. in 1955 as meter man. In 1969, he was transferred to Canadian, Texas as foreman of the Buffalo Wallow Gas field. Lloyd was then transferred to the Pawnee Rock area as the area supervisor in 1976, until his retirement in 1991.

Lloyd married Mary Ann Jones at Sacred Heart Church in Hooker, Okla., March 2, 1957. To this union six children were born (three sons and three daughters). Mary Ann died Aug. 29, 1997.

Lloyd and his family enjoyed camping, boating, and many extended vacations and trips in their motor home. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Great Bend, and 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862, and volunteered for Meals on Wheels and at the Adoration Chapel.

Lloyd is survived by three sons, Keith Heeke of Great Bend, Phillip Heeke and wife Jane of Great Bend, and Leslie Heeke of Larned; two daughters, Nonette Clemens and husband Paul of Lewisburg, Pa. and LaVonne Reiser and husband Richard of Fisherville, Ky.; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in passing by his parents; five brothers, Arnold Heeke, Alvin Heeke, Vernon Heeke, Owen Heeke, and Merle Heeke; two sisters, infant Edna Corrine and Jeanne (Schiffelbine) Drake; and one daughter Rita Janniee.

Visitation will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Knights of Columbus Rosary and Vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery with military honors conducted by the McConnell Air Force Honor Guard. Memorials have been suggested to Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN) or Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Julia Emma Heuszel, 98, passed away August 26, 2021, at Stafford County Hospital. She was born April 12, 1923, at Hunnewell, Kan. to Ernest &amp; Vernia (Lockwood) Trost. She married Robert Otto Heuszel on November 18, 1946, at Wichita. He died July 17, 2005.

Julia moved to Great Bend in 1947 and worked at CKMC in housekeeping. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. Julia loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include, a son, Dale Heuszel and wife Michelle of Salina; a daughter Diane Fischer and husband Harold of Seward; four grandchildren, Zachary Heuszel, Dr. Amanda Heuszel, Matt Fischer and wife Jessica, and Tracy Fischer; and two great grandchildren, Nevaeh Fischer and Garrett Fischer. Karen (Nagel) Behrens, 66, passed away August 26, 2021, at the University Of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She was born May 18, 1955 at Great Bend to Harvey &amp; Joyce (Muehlenburg) Nagel. She married Ross Alan Behrens on January 31, 1975, at Great Bend. He died December 11, 2011.

A lifetime Great Bend resident, Karen was a pharmacy tech for Wal-Mart. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed painting, yard work and bird houses. Karen loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Survivors include, her mother, Joyce Nagel; two sons, Michael Behrens of Hoisington and Brian Behrens of Wichita; a daughter, Melissa Serrien and husband Greg of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a sister, Vickie Owston of Houston, Tex.; and three grandchildren, Zachary Serrien, Sophie Serrien and Jeffery Serrien. She was preceded in death by her father, Harvey Nagel; and her husband, Ross Behrens.

This is where she met Gerald Reifschneider. After their marriage Dec. 7, 1958 they moved to Garden City, KS where she worked at Fidelity State Bank before moving back to Great Bend, KS where she worked at Central KS Medical Center, Laboratory&nbsp;and as a courier for 17 years. She also attended Barton Co. Community College. Phyllis owned and operated a flower shop for&nbsp;13 years before retiring to&nbsp;Hutchinson, KS. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and former member of Sigma Phi Sorority.

Survivors include sons, Jon (Marilyn) Reifschneider , Arlington, KS and Tom (Natasha) Reifschneider, Fort Scott, KS; daughter, Lori Ann Reifschneider, Hutchinson, KS; sister, Von Apel; brother, John Renfro. Other survivors include 7 grandchildren, Paul, Elizabeth, Michael, Micah, Christian, Tyler and Dillon, 4 great grandchildren with a 5th arriving soon. Cindy Louise Stillwagoner, 71, passed away August 25, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned. She was born October 9, 1949, at Hays to Victor Lang, Sr. &amp; Minnie (Staab) Lang. She married Richard Stillwagoner on January 18, 1971, at Great Bend.

Cindy graduated Marion High School in Hays and the Dominican School of Nursing in Great Bend. She was a RN at CKMC in the operating room, and the office nurse for Dr. Wendale McAllaster and Great Bend Internists. She was the owner of the Ceramic Corner. She was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Altar Society and St. Rose and Dominican Alumni Association. She especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Richard Stillwagoner of the home; a son, Marc Stillwagoner and wife Melinda of Mansfield, Tex.; a daughter, Rebecca Smith and husband Matt of Meridian, ID; and four grandchildren, Lillie Stillwagoner, Luke Stillwagoner, Danielle Smith and Natalie Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Victor Lang, Jr.; and a sister, Norma Buckler.

She was born to parents Thomas &amp; Edna Muth on Jan. 7, 1944 in Lyons, KS.&nbsp; Nancy grew up in Great Bend, KS where she graduated high school in 1962. She later married Jack Denney Baldwin on June 26, 1965 at St. Rose Church in Great Bend. Jack preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 2020. She was a resident of Windom, KS and Little River, KS area since 1974.

Survivors include sons, Todd (Jill) Baldwin &amp; Chris (Brandi) Baldwin; daughter, Jacalyn (Hank) Hayes; brothers, Thomas Muth &amp; Tony (Susie) Muth, sister, Ann French; 12 grandchildren,&nbsp;Abbey (Braden) Burdette, Chloe (Tevin) Renken, Emily (Austin) Haddock, Trey, James (LaRyssa), Levi, Collin, Dylan (Teagan), Mackson Baldwin, Garrett (Cori), Maddie Hayes, and Sophia (Patrick) Ringering, and 6 Great-Grandchildren. Lewis – Janet Lorene Crockett, 87, passed away August 24, 2021 at Grand Plains Skilled Nursing and Rehab in Pratt.

She was born October 9, 1933 in Coats, KS the daughter of Cecil Orland and Letha Pearl Hicks Fisher.

A lifetime area resident, she was a homemaker. She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, both of Lewis.

On August 9, 1953 she married Floyd Crockett in Kinsley; he survives.

Other survivors include: three daughters, Brenda (John) Roenbaugh, Lewis, Candi (Bruce) Russell, Stillwater, OK, Shala (John) Kosir, Edmond; eight grandchildren, Brandon Roenbaugh, Tawnya Roenbaugh, Daniel Russell, Dax Russell, Drew Russell, Shane Pritchett, Marissa Kosir, Lily Kosir; and three great grandchildren, Aiden Roenbaugh, Carson Roenbaugh, Avery Roenbaugh.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Norman Howard “Norm” Staats, 84, died Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at his 
home in Garden City, Kansas. He was born August 24, 1937, in Stafford, 
Kansas, the son of Leo Herschel &amp; Daisy Maxine (Brown) Staats. 
 Norman grew up and attended schools in Sylvia, Kansas. After 
graduating from Sylvia High School he attended and earned a Master’s 
degree from Kansas State University. On August 30, 1959, he married 
LuEtta Jean Berschauer in WaKeeney, Kansas. They moved to Garden City 
in 1960 and have lived in Garden City since. Norm taught at Garden City
 High School for a short time. He then taught at Garden City Community 
College for 39 years. He also started the Rodeo program at the college 
and served as Rodeo coach for 33 years. Norm was a member of St. James 
Lutheran Church of Garden City, the Kansas National Education 
Association, the Kansas Vocational Association, Alpha Tau Omega, and 
ROTC at Kansas State University. Norman’s hobbies include woodworking, 
gardening, and traveling with his family. 
 Survivors include his wife LuEtta Staats of the home; 4 children

held at 4:00 p.m. also on Friday, August 27, at the Sylvia Cemetery in

Marsha Lynn McConnaughy, 79, passed away August 24, 2021, at her home in Bennington, Neb. She was born March 9, 1942, at Great Bend to John &amp; Helen (Damon) Hoge. She married Clarence McConnaughy at Great Bend on October 14, 1961. He died July 9, 2012.

A longtime Dodge City resident before moving to Bennington in 2012, Marsha was a bookkeeper for WW Manufacturing, and upon her retirement, served as a paraprofessional for Comanche Middle School in Dodge City. She was a longtime girl scout leader and especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include, a son, Kyle McConnaughy and wife Kerry of Bennington, Neb.; and three grandchildren, Connor, Corey and Kelsey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence McConnaughy; and a brother, Michael A. Hoge.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, August 29, 2021 at Bryant Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 30, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home, with Pastor Larry Schumacher presiding. Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Great Bend. Larned – Eleanor Sanders, 73, passed away August 22, 2021 at Salina Regional Medical Center, Salina.

She was born June 16, 1948 in Kinsley, the daughter of Clemente Rincon and Lucille Mariche Perez.

A lifetime resident of Kinsley and Larned, she worked at Larned State Hospital. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, where she was very active and served as a eucharist minister. She was a member of Ft Larned Sam’s Club and the Pawnee Valley Community Hospital Auxiliary. She spent her time sewing crocheting, and embroidering tea towels and really enjoyed camping, watching her grandkids play sports, and she loved her shoes and clothes.

On November 24, 1973 she Married Leon Sanders at Larned; he survives.

Other survivors include: daughter, Felicia (Kevin) Davis, Larned; two sons, Brian (Tonya) Sanders, Larned, Tyson Sanders, Great Bend; sister, Linda (Frank) Garcia, Wichita; two brothers, Raymond (Cindy) Perez, Anthony (Darla) Perez; and six grandchildren: Australia, Saber, Eian, Levi, Patience, and Jaxten.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Trinidad Ruiz, Jane Bronson; and seven brothers, Felix Perez, Guadalupe Perez Sr, Pete Perez, Francisco Perez, John Perez, Terry Perez, and Manuel Perez.

Funeral mass will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 27, 2021 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Larned, with Father Bernard Felix presiding. Eleanor Sanders

Joan B. Krier, 88, died August 22, 2021, at the University of Kansas Health System, Great Bend Campus. She was born September 14, 1932, in Redwing, Kansas, the daughter of Anthony P. and Veronica (Meyeres) Francis. Joan was a 1950 graduate of Odin High School.

On June 11, 1952, she married Vernon Krier in Olmitz, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 16, 1982.

A homemaker, having lived in Holyrood, Hitschmann, and Claflin, before retiring in Great Bend. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Holyrood and a member of St. Mary’s Altar Society.

Survivors include; five children, Darryl Krier and wife Ronda of Ellinwood, Barbara Krier of Great Bend, Jay Krier of rural Claflin, Verna Montoya and husband Chris of Holyrood, Jodi Baltizore and husband Tyler of Hoisington; a sister, Delores Bieberle-Westbrook of Hoisington; 21 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Michael J. and Patrick J. Krier and daughter-in-law, Bennie Krier; five brothers, Leonard, Edward, Bud, Ray, and Bernard Francis; and two sisters, Margaret Gates and Martha Francis.

Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday at the funeral home.

Joan Krier

Thurston Briscoe, a former radio producer at NPR in Washington, D.C., an executive&nbsp;at WBGO/“Jazz88” in Newark and a longtime Montclair resident, died on Aug. 16, 2021, after a struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. He was 74.

Mr. Briscoe was born in 1947, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Magdalene and Alfonzo Briscoe. He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1965. He played drums in the Argonne Rebels Drum&nbsp;and Bugle Corps.&nbsp;

He attended Wichita State University, majoring in theater and speech therapy, and hosted classical and jazz shows on the university station, KMUW. He had been a lover of music on radio stations from Memphis to Mexico since his boyhood.

Mr. Briscoe served in the Army in a K-9 unit in Seoul, South Korea, and then returned to Wichita State to complete his bachelor’s degree. He played Othello in a college production and kept the poster on his wall, and made friendships in Wichita that lasted for decades.

He moved to Eugene, Oregon, where beginning in 1976 he hosted a weekly jazz show on KLCC, the local NPR station. Soon he was also reporting on public affairs and became a full-time producer of features and documentaries.&nbsp;

In 1980 NPR in Washington, D.C., hired him to join the arts unit of the newly created daily show “Morning Edition.” He became the associate producer of the NPR performance series “Jazz Alive!” and then returned to “Morning Edition” to head the arts unit.

In 1990 Mr. Briscoe accepted a job at Newark’s WBGO “Jazz 88,” the 24-hour station with a jazz, news and rhythm and blues format. For 23 years he served first as program director and then vice president of programming and production.&nbsp;

He managed the on-air staff and regular and special programming, where he championed live remotes and performance series. He was executive producer of NPR/WBGO’s “JazzSet,” whose host, Branford Marsalis, gave him the affectionate on-air name Thurston&nbsp;Briscoe the Third.&nbsp;

During his tenure, WBGO, one of the most-listened-to jazz radio stations in the&nbsp;country, reached out to the world via wbgo.org. The station began to webcast its programming and launched a stream of new releases by young artists entitled the “Jazz Bee.”

Throughout his career, with his natural friendliness and interest in people, Mr. Briscoe mentored many new public radio producers and managers nationwide, especially African American producers. He was a role model with legendary warmth and presence.&nbsp;

Mr. Briscoe radiated his enthusiasm for life and people as well as music. Jon Schwartz, who hired him at KLCC, recently said, “Most of all, I remember how his face would light up when he would see you.”

Mr. Briscoe is survived by his wife, New Jersey State Sen. Nia Gill; her son, Bradley, and grandson, John; his brother, Phillip, and sister-in-law, Louise Allen Briscoe of Seattle; and cousins Elsie Wickliffe of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Mickey and Pat Gomez of Wichita, Kansas.

Thurston Briscoe

STAFFORD –&nbsp; J. Lee Figger, 88, died Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Stafford County Hospital, Stafford.&nbsp; Born December 17, 1932 at Stafford he was the son of Jesse A. and Ruby Ward Figger.&nbsp; He was a veteran of the US Army 1953-55 serving with the 10th Infantry Division at Germany and from 1955-61 with the US Army Reserve.&nbsp; He was a farmer and stock-man.&nbsp; On August 3, 1957 he&nbsp; married Carolyn Sue Long at Flippin, Ark.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife: Sue.&nbsp; Sons: David (Kathy) Figger and Matt (Laurie) Figger.&nbsp; Brother: Fowler Figger. J. Lee Figger

Vaughn A. Duncan, 96, passed away August 19, 2021, at his home in Great Bend. He was born August 29, 1924, at Garfield, to Ray A. &amp; Pearl E. (Bingaman) Duncan. He married Margaret Ruthe Robbins on December 27, 1948, at Garfield. She died December 8, 2001.

Coming from Pratt in 1968, Vaughn was a Great Bend resident. He was a yard foreman at Bovaird Supply. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Barton County Historical Society, Great Bend Senior Center and the American Legion Post #300 in Garfield. Vaughn loved all things auto related and could fix anything. He was a jack of all trades. Vaughn was veteran of the United States Army, having served during World War II. He was awarded the Purple Heart for his service.

Survivors include, two sons, Von Stewart Duncan and wife Gayla of Hudson, and David Brent Duncan and wife Kim of Valley Center; a sister, Ruby Buller of Halstead; nine grandchildren, Ryan Cook, Jamie Baxter (Chris), Kynha Duncan, Brent Duncan, Tyler Duncan, Jeremiah Duncan (Megan), Reilly Duncan (Kara), Angela Duncan, and Katie Ritz; and nine great grandchildren, Nora, Emma, Connor, Sophia, Collin, Landon, Owen, Cooper, and Karly. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret Ruthe Duncan; a son, Stephen Ray Duncan; a grandson, Brandon Nash Duncan; two brothers, Floyd Duncan and Vern Duncan; and a sister, Sylvia Snodgrass.

Vaughn Duncan

Jean Strobl, 79, died at Wesley Hospital, Wichita, KS, on August 19, 2021. She was born on June 5, 1942, in Chicago, IL. Her parents were Harvey and Leone Brown. 

Jean was a member of Tri-Circle Unit and St. Joseph’s Altar Society. She was born in the south side of Chicago, moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and met Mike Strobl, got married in 1963, and moved to Ellinwood. They started a family and business. Mike was co-owner of Strobl-Yarmer Construction. 

Jean earned an associate degree in nursing from Barton County Community College and worked at Central Kansas Medical Center and State of Kansas home health. 

Survivors are son Scott (Maureen) Strobl, Chicago, IL; daughters, Susan (Brian) Burrus, Wichita, KS, Laura (Steve) Schaffer, Denver, CO; sister Barbara (Brown) Wilky, Phoenix, AZ, grandchildren, Ben (Monica), Mark and Patrick Burrus, John (Alexa) Schaffer, Kate (Matt) Kinnison, and Michael Strobl. Great grandchildren Blair and Margot Burrus. 

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Ellinwood with burial to follow at Lakin-Comanche District Cemetery in Ellinwood. Visitation is Monday, August 23, from 1:00 – 7:00 pm at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood. The Altar Society will pray a rosary at 3:00 pm on Monday and there will be a 7:00 pm vigil and rosary service also at Minnis Chapel in Ellinwood.

Larned – Shirley A. Atteberry, 87, passed away August 19, 2021 at Country Living of Larned.

She was born May 1, 1934 in Great Bend, the daughter of Harry and Mathilda Nordman Oetken.

A lifetime area resident, she was an office assistant for Federal Land Bank. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Larned, Larned Hospital Auxiliary, and volunteered at the food pantry.

On November 16, 1954 she married Arlis A. Atteberry at Peace Lutheran Church, Albert; he survives.

Other survivors include: daughter, Kim (Greg) Smith, Larned; son, Matt (Pam) Atteberry, Parsons; sister, Gloria Pence, Santanta; brother, LaVerne (Nancy) Oetken, Albert; four grandchildren, Blake (Mallory) Mathis, Parsons, Jarod Smith, Basehor, Talia Smith, Larned, Ariel Smith, Kansas City Missouri; and three great grandchildren, Sloane Mathis, Boden Mathis, and Logan Smith.

Gary Gene Tobias, 83, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021, at his residence in Lampasas, Texas.

Visitation will be held at <a href="https://www.sneedfuneralchapel.com/obituary/gary-tobias">Sneed Funeral Chapel</a> from 5 pm to 7 pm on 
Tuesday, August 24, 2021.&nbsp; Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday,
 August 25, 2021, at the Central Texas State Veteran's Cemetery in 
Killeen at 11 am, followed by a celebration of life for Gary at First 
United Methodist Church Lampasas at 1:30 pm.

Gary was born on February 23, 1938, in Great Bend, KS to Elmer and 
Viola (Parker) Tobias.&nbsp; He grew up in Great Bend and graduated from 
Great Bend High School in 1956.&nbsp; After high school, he joined the US Air
 Force in 1957 and served for 4 years.&nbsp; He was honorably discharged in 
1967 at the rank of Airman First Class.

After the Air Force, Gary attended college at Kansas State University
 where he received a B.S. in Industrial Arts Ed.&nbsp; He then went on to 
attend Kansas State College of Pittsburg where he received an M.S. in 
Industrial Ed. in May of 1968.&nbsp; After college Gary primarily worked in 
the electronic fields in multiple capacities, retiring in 2011.&nbsp; Gary 
married Charlotte Henry in 1957 in Great Bend, KS and they were happily 
married for 23 years.&nbsp; In 1982, Gary married Sandra Jackson and they 
were happily married for 38 years.&nbsp; Gary was a proud member of the 
United Methodist Church for 17 years, where he sang in the choir the 
entire time.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Viola Tobias; wife, Sandra, and his sister, Shirley Spitzmiller.

Survivors include his sisters, Beverly (James) Roberts, Judy Burke, 
Debbie (Shane) Potter; sons, Bradley Scott Tobias of Wichita, KS, 
Randall Lee Tobias of Wichita, KS, David Allen Tobias of Bailey, CO; 7 
grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Upatoi, GA – Sarah Elizabeth Wright Simpson, 89, passed away August 15, 2021 at Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, KS.

Graveside service will be held, August 25, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the Veterans Section of Park Hill Cemetery, Macon Road, Columbus, GA.

Sarah, daughter of the late Preacher Paul T and Annie Belle (Watkins) Wright was born December 27, 1931, in Natural Bridge, VA.

She was Baptist by faith and one of the founding members of Wynnbrook Baptist Church, Columbus, GA. She taught Adult Ladies Bible Class on Sundays for over forty years at churches in GA, VA, RI, KS and HI. In 1969, she became a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Regent, Oglethorpe DAR Chapter, Columbus, GA. She also served as a Chairman at the GA DAR State level. She was a member of the Columbus Students Club and served all levels of Officers' positions to include President.

She graduated from Toccoa High School, Toccoa, GA in 1948 and later graduated from Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C. in 1951. She taught home economics at the Tamassee DAR School, 1951-1952.

During college, she met the love of her life, Richard Russell Simpson. They married June 2, 1952, in Westminster, S.C. The next 30 years, Sarah traveled with Richard during his military service in the Army. She enjoyed moving from Post to Post totaling 13 times with their final destination Fort Benning, GA. Upon Richard’s retirement from the Army, as a Colonel, in 1982, they settled in Upatoi, GA where she spent the next 34 years. In March 2014, she moved to the Gardens of Calvary Assisted Living, Columbus, GA.

In September 2016, she moved to Hoisington, KS, and lived with her daughter and son-in-law for 3½ years. In January 2019, she moved to Brookdale Senior Living, Great Bend, KS moving in December 2019 to Country Place Senior Living, Hoisington, KS.

Sarah was preceded in death by her parents, and only sister, Julia Rose Sublett. On March 8, 2013, her husband, Richard, passed away.

Sarah and Richard were blessed with three children. Richard R. Simpson, Jr. (Theresa) of Whites, GA, Paula F. Manweiler (Gene) of Hoisington, KS and Elizabeth A. Simpson, Denver, CO. She has four grandchildren, Tracy Engerman, Brooke Stillwell, Shanna Simpson and Richard R. Simpson, III. In addition, three great-grandchildren, Owen Shepheard, Molly Engerman and Copeland Stillwell.

Carol Jane Wagner, 88, Rush Center, Kansas, died Thursday, August 12, 2021, at Wesley Trauma Center, Wichita, Kansas.

Carol was born April 27, 1933, in Rush County, Kansas, the daughter of Walter and Olive Vera “Ollie” (Johnson) Davis.&nbsp;

A lifetime resident of Rush County, Kansas, she was a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, school cook, bank employee at Timken State Bank, Timken, Kansas, and office assistant at Skillett and Sons Trucking, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; After retiring, her family was her pride, joy and priority.&nbsp;

Carol graduated from La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, &nbsp;in 1951, and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church, Rush Center, Kansas.&nbsp;

On April 12, 1953, she married Kenneth E. Wagner at the First Christian Church, La Crosse, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death December 23, 2010.

Survivors include two sons, Duane Wagner and his wife, Pam, Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Rory Wagner and his wife, Joann, Manitou Springs, Colorado; one daughter, Cheryl Miller and her husband, Joe, Iola, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Jodi Hagan, Clint Wagner, Brooke Kern, Lindsey Wagner, Brett Wagner, Megan Cole, Mandy Roe and Melissa Kent; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Merrill Davis and Elton Davis.

Visitation will be Monday, August 16, 2021, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Janousek Funeral Home, La Crosse, Kansas, with the family receiving friends from 6:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.&nbsp;

Reeta Marie Avery, 80, passed away August 11, 2021 at her residence in Larned, KS.

She was born June 6, 1941 in Lenora, OK the daughter of Marvin and Pearl Hart Blaine. She was a 1959 graduate of Taloga High school, Taloga, OK. An area resident since October of 2019 moving from Enid, OK where she was a secretary and worked at a Beauty College.

She was of the Methodist faith and enjoyed sewing, quilting, crocheting and cooking. She also enjoyed listening to Mel Tillis and Elvis, who was said to have asked her to be his seamstress. Dogs held a special place in her heart.

On April 1, 1990, she married Albert Avery in Medford, OK. He passed away May 20, 2011.

Survivors include one daughter, Annette (Robin) Hill, Larned, KS.; one brother, Cecil Blaine, Pasadena, TX. and many nieces and nephews along with a good friend David Kloss, Larned, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, Rickey W. Hill; two sisters, Arlis (Russ) Smith and Arlene (Victor) Terbush; one sister-in-law, Peggy Blaine.

Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.

Reeta Marie Avery

John A. Klema, 96, passed away August 13, 2021, at Kenwood Plaza, St. John. He was born September 25, 1924, at Kanopolis, to John A. Klema, Sr. and Agnes (Stehno) Klema. He married Edna Janet Macek on July 26, 1949, in Wilson. She died February 10, 2020.

Coming to Great Bend from Ellsworth in 1959, John was a grocer and meat cutter. He served in the United States Army during WWII as a surgical tech. After the Army, he ran IGA grocery stores in Longford, Blackwolf and Ellsworth. He later worked for Marlette Homes, Rice Engineering, Elkan Manufacturing and Fuller Brush. After his retirement, he drove for Marmie Motors. He was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #892, American Legion Post #180, V.F.W. Post #3111, and a Boy Scout leader. John enjoyed gardening, fishing, and tinkering. John was able to fix almost anything.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Ochs and husband Frank, and Carol Wiesner and husband Kevin, all of Great Bend; a daughter in law, Verna Klema of Hoisington; a sister, Shirley Krug of S.C.; five grandchildren, Brandon Ochs (Melissa), Brett Ochs (Cindy), Blake Ochs (Shelby), Shelby Wiesner and Becky Milsap; and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Edna Klema; a son, Rick Klema; four brothers, Victor Klema, Rudy Klema, Richard Klema and Arthur Klema; and two sisters, Mildred Katzenmeier and Adeline Bartunek.

Clara May Oliverius, 81, Lawrence, Kansas, formerly of Rush Center, Kansas, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021, at Pioneer Ridge, Lawrence, Kansas.

Clara was born March 5, 1940, in Atwood, Kansas, the daughter of Clarence and Selma (Gray) Baumfalk.&nbsp; She was a resident of Lawrence, Kansas, since January 2016, moving there from Rush County, Kansas, where she had resided since 1973.&nbsp; A 1958 graduate of Atwood High School, Atwood, Kansas, she received her Bachelor’s Degree in 1961, and her Master’s Degree in 1969 from Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas.&nbsp; She was a teacher, and taught elementary and junior high students.

On August 11, 1962, she married Roger J. Oliverius at Atwood, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death October 6, 2015.

Survivors include:&nbsp; her sons, James Ray “Jim” Oliverius (Lisa), Lawrence, Kansas, Shelly Lyn Oliverius (Jenifer), Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Tracy Alan Oliverius (Stacy), Ottawa, Kansas; a host of grandchildren; and one brother, Raymond Baumfalk, Atwood, Kansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and one&nbsp; brother, Virgil Baumfalk.

Rita Janet Romine, 83, died August 9, 2021, at Morton County Nursing Home, Elkhart. She was born September 15, 1937, in Great Bend, to Herman and Lillie Josephine (Mull) Strobel. Rita married James Keith Romine on October 15, 1955, in Great Bend. James died on August 9, 2021.

Rita, a lifetime resident of Great Bend, was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society. She was an active farm wife, and in her younger years, was employed by a Colonel as a secretary at Salina Air Force Base. Rita enjoyed reading, gardening, square dancing and playing pitch.

Survivors include two sons, Kent Romine and wife Valerie of Great Bend, and Kevin Romine and wife Tammy of Great Bend; one daughter, Marita Walls and husband Dan; son-in-law Paul Schneweis of Great Bend; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, Melissa Tudor (Damian) and son Trace, Ashley Romine-Guerra (Izzy Guerra) and children Teegan, Raquel and Owen, Jessica Ferguson (Dustin) and children Grace and Hayden, Kirk Walls, Dr. James Walls (Lindsay), Lindsey White (Kendrick), Chad Romine (Taylor), and Ryan Romine.

Rita was preceded in passing by her husband James; one daughter, Renee Schneweis; and two brothers, Joseph Strobel and Richard Strobel.
