Donald Lee Penka, 85, died August 9, 2021, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born October 11, 1935, in Larned, to John and Mary Hazel (Simmons) Penka. Don married Lilly Dreiling November 25, 1963, in Garden City.

Don, a resident of Great Bend since 1963 coming from Garden City, was employed as a clerk supervisor for Dillons and later worked for Werth’s Plumbing and as a custodian for U.S.D. 428, retiring in 1998. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus Council #862 and a current member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church where he faithfully served as a homebound Eucharistic Minister. In his younger years, Don served the youth of the community as a bowling coach, and in his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking and enthusiastically followed his grandchildren’s activities. Don proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1954-1956.

Survivors include his wife Lilly Penka, of the home; one son, Matt Penka and his wife Christi of Great Bend; two daughters, Michele Smith and husband Delbert of Topeka, and Melissa Sides of Hutchinson; and seven grandchildren, Lauren Penka, Blake Penka, Dru Penka, Sarah Smith, Samantha Smith, Ashley Sides and Braden Sides.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Marcene Penka; two brothers, Norman Penka and Elvin Penka; three sisters, Valetta Stroble, Cleta Jackson and Ellen Jo Penka.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 14, 2021, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Prakash Kola presiding. Interment will be in Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Friday, August 13, with a Vigil at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to Sully’s Foundation for Epilepsy Research and Education (SFERE) or Kans for Kids, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Grayson Salmon Gregg, three months 24 days, passed away Monday, August 9, 2021, in Great Bend. He was born April 13, 2021, in Hays, the son of Ben Gregg and Korryn Asuncion.

Grayson was a happy content baby. He was loved by family and friends, he will be missed by his mother, father, grandparents and other family members.

Donna Kay Klusener, 64, passed away August 8, 2021, at Ellinwood District Hospital, Ellinwood. She was born March 16, 1957, in Ellinwood to Don and Margaret (Molder) Arnold. Donna married Curtis Klusener March 20, 1976, in Great Bend.

Donna, a lifetime resident of Ellinwood, was employed as an admission attendant and secretary for Ellinwood District Hospital. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as the secretary-treasurer for Cheyenne Bottoms Sportsmen Club. Donna enjoyed arts and crafts, fishing and swimming.

Survivors include husband, Curtis Klusener, of the home; one son: Curtis Klusener, Jr. of Great Bend; two brothers, Terry Arnold of Weatherford, Texas; Patrick Schreck of Wichita, and step-father Maurice Schreck of Hutchinson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral Services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, 2021, at Calvary Baptist Church in Ellinwood, with Pastor Jason Winget presiding. Keith William Gnad, 61, of Overland Park, Kansas, died Saturday, June 19, 2021, at Advent Health, Shawnee Mission, Merriam, KS. He was born June 9, 1960, in Hays to Clarence and Janet L.&nbsp; (Morin) Gnad.

Keith graduated from Hoisington High School, class of 1978. During that time, Keith developed a passion for photography, becoming a member of the yearbook staff and winning several photography awards.&nbsp; Even prior to graduating he performed brick laying jobs, such as homes and fireplaces without any supervision.&nbsp; Following graduation, he worked as a mason for his uncle, Mike Gnad. Keith lived in Hays, Great Bend and Kansas City before settling in Little Rock, Arkansas where he formed his own successful company, Gnad Tile &amp; Masonry.&nbsp; In his free time, he worked as a photography teacher at the Arkansas Arts Center in Little Rock, focusing primarily on black and white photography.&nbsp;

Keith was preceded in death by his father, and by his sister, Yvonne Burtt.&nbsp; He is survived by his mother, Hays; children, Chantz Gnad, Overland Park; Austen Gnad (Angie Westcott), Kansas City, MO; Samuel and Carver Gnad, Sherwood, AR; siblings Christina Smith (Ron), Hoisington; Steven Gnad, Hays; Leah Beck (Art), Montezuma; and Tracy Gnad (Noemi) Peculiar, MO; nieces and nephews Wendy Carr, Sean (Kira) Burtt, Shannon Burtt, Jessica Beck, Jordan Beck, Julian Gnad, Christopher Gnad, Steven Gnad, and Cindy Garrett.

Smith, age 75 years of Great Bend, Kansas passed away on Saturday evening, August 7, 2021 at Almost Home in Great Bend.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vicki was born on August 14, 1945 at Garden City, Kansas to William and Beatrice (Wolfe) Elliott.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family lived in Ulysses and Atwood, Kansas prior to moving to Great Bend in 1984.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vicki was a 911 Dispatcher for Barton County Communications in Great Bend, retiring in 2007 after 18 years of service.&nbsp;&nbsp;A longtime member of First Church of God in Great Bend, she served on the Board of Trustees for many years.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vicki was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority of both Ulysses and Great Bend, and loved to read and watch old movies on TV.&nbsp;

Survivors include one son, Brett (and Gwen) Maris of Trenton, Nebraska; two birth daughters, Traci Maris and Tara Elliott, both of Great Bend; her chosen daughter, Eden (and Benny) Mulligan of Great Bend, Kansas and her children Alex, Maddex, Harmon, and Carter Mulligan; four grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;Lexi Maris, Heaven Williams, Tuff Elliott, and Saylor Wittman; three great-grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;Lycan Williams, Saint Martensen, and Averi Robinson; one brother, Gail Elliott of Sequim, Washington and one sister, Karen Harbour of Ulysses, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Vicki was preceded in death by her parents; five siblings:&nbsp;&nbsp;William “Jr.” Elliott, Robert “Bob” Elliott, Jerry Elliott, Betta Niederer, and Billie Carter; one grandson, Cody Maris; and one great-granddaughter, Nova Martensen.&nbsp;

Theresa Marie (Leiker) Haselhorst, age 91, died Saturday, August 7, 2021, at the Good Samaritan Society of Hays Care Center.&nbsp; She was born October 5, 1929, at Victoria, Kansas, to Pius and Anna (Sander) Leiker.&nbsp; She married Merlin F. Haselhorst on November 9, 1949, in Victoria, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on September 29, 1998.

She was a bookkeeper at Flowers By Frances, Feme’ Bridal Wear and Jay Stewart Electric, and retired in 1990.&nbsp; She grew up in Victoria and was a graduate of Victoria High School. She enjoyed spending time with her family, and camping at Cedar Buff Lake.&nbsp; She enjoyed bingo, reading, watching the Royals and the Chiefs.

Theresa was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella, Christian Mothers, Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, and a life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary all of Hays, and she spend many hours volunteering at the Community Assistance Center in Hays.&nbsp;

Patricia Ann Drehle, 87, passed away July 31, 2021, at University Village Memory Care in Round Rock, Tex. She was born November 28, 1933, at Albert, Kan. to Orville &amp; Rachel (Lebsack) Hays. She married Merle Drehle on January 14, 1961, at Great Bend, Kan. He died September 15, 1990.

Patricia was a claims secretary at Farm Bureau Financial Services in Great Bend. In 1997 she moved away from Great Bend and relocated to Harlingen, Tex., before moving to Round Rock, Texas in 2013. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Great Bend, and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen. She always volunteered at church. She especially loved spending time with her family.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan Uribe, and husband Eddie of Round Rock, Tex.; a brother, Charles Hays and wife Jennifer of Cordillera, Colo.; and a grandson, Adam Uribe of Dallas, Tex. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle Drehle; and two sisters, Carol Mills and Sandra Horn.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. Private Family Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Great Bend Cemetery, Great Bend, Kan. Memorials have been designated to Trinity Lutheran Church, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Roch Alan Miller, 66, passed away at his home August 1, 2021, surrounded by much of his family in his final days. Roch was born in Great Bend to Cy and Fran (Muth) Miller and lived most of his life in Barton county.

Roch was a United States Marine, lifetime oilfield worker and lake enthusiast all his life. He was loved by his family and friends for whom he felt the same and gave his all to make sure they all knew he would help them in any way possible. His faith was solid in Christ and he looked forward to seeing his son, Rochy in heaven along with so many others.

Roch is survived by his loving wife, Cori of Ellinwood; a daughter, Tammy Dean of Galveston, TX; a brother, Don (Wendy) Miller of Hutchinson; a sister, Monica (Barry) Bowers of Great Bend; a daughter in law, Renee Miller of Great Bend; his grandchildren, Kaleb, Aerieana, Elijah, Brynn, Daegan and Cambrie; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Roch Miller II; and his brothers, Tim Miller and Mick Miller.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Bryant Funeral Home. Edward “Ed” Duane Swartz, 67, Alexander, Kansas, passed away Friday, July 30, 2021.

Ed was born September 8, 1953, in La Crosse, Kansas, the son of Henry Edward and Norma Jean (Clark) Swartz. A lifelong resident of Rush County, Kansas, he was a 1971 graduate of La Crosse High School, La Crosse, Kansas, and attended Barton County Community College, Great Bend, Kansas

Ed enjoyed farming, dirt-moving, hunting, playing basketball, watching various sports, and spending time with his friends and family. He loved listening to oldies music and playing outside with all his children, nieces, and nephews.

Ed met Louise Casey through a co-ed softball team in La Crosse, Kansas. The couple was married on April 23, 1983, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, La Crosse, Kansas.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Swartz, Alexander, Kansas; his children, Staci Kiewel (Daniel), Great Bend, Kansas, Emily Swartz, St. Joseph, Missouri, and Tanner Swartz (Codie), Olathe, Kansas; his granddaughter Makenzie Kiewel, Great Bend, Kansas; siblings, Susan Bailey (Ernie), Patti Johnson (Mike), and Steve Swartz (Loretta); brother-in-law, Lyle Seltmann. Ed is also survived by many nieces and nephews, and many close and lifelong friends.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Diana O’Brien; brother in law, Stan O’Brien; and sister, Cindy Seltmann.

Coming from Colorado, Scott had lived in Great Bend for the last three months. He was a construction laborer. Scott enjoyed fishing, working on cars and collecting baseball cards. He had many life-long friends from high school that he kept in touch with.

Survivors include his mother, Alice Deines of Great Bend; his siblings, Sheryl Stickler of Great Bend, Tammy DiManna and husband Terry of Brighton, Colo., Frank Deines III and wife Shannon of Great Bend, and Derek Deines and wife Rachel of Firestone, Colo.; and nine nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Deines Jr.

Oma Lee Sharp, 84, passed away July 25, 2021, at her home in Great Bend. She was born March 12, 1937, in Pawnee County, Okla. to Elmer &amp; Myrtle (Broughton) Heilmann. She married LeRoy Sharp in 1981, at Great Bend. He died August 7, 2005.

Oma was a route driver for Sunflower Diversified Services until she retired. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness. She enjoyed flower gardening and especially loved her canine friend, Sandy.

Survivors include, her sons, Scott Wilkinson (Maxine) and John Wilkinson all of Great Bend, Richard Wilkinson (Ruth) of Garden City, and Mike Williams (Amanda) of Hutchinson; her daughters, Teresa Hannaford of Emporia, and Kim Mendez (Juan) of Great Bend; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Glenn Taylor; her husband, LeRoy Sharp; a son, Steven Wilkinson; a daughter, Diane Ramos; two brothers, Floyd Heilmann and Raymond Heilmann; and a sister, Lela Stillabower.

Larned – Wilda Jean Jantz, 86, departed this life on July 22, 2021 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas.

She was born March 10, 1935 in Utica Kansas, the daughter of Hubert Wayne and Alice Amelia Lohoff Deighton.

An area resident since 1980, she was a Mental Health Aide at Larned State Hospital. She was a member of the Larned United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Society, Dodge City Boot Hill Bells, Beta Gamma Sorority, and the Rebekah Lodge where she was the youngest to hold the honor of Noble Grand. She loved to visit and treasured her time with family and friends. Wilda truly loved her pets, especially her cats and dogs. Playing cards, gardening, bird watching, cooking, baking, and traveling were her favorite past times.

On April 26, 1985 she married the love of her life, Bruce Jantz, at Miami, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death on April 2, 2008.

Survivors include: two daughters, Pamela (Kenny) Adams, Pueblo West, Colorado, Lisa (Randy) Jacobs, Scott City; stepdaughter, Leann (Kevin) Simmons, Larned; stepson, Mark Jantz, Garden City; four grandchildren, Jeremy (Racquel) Jacobs, Azure (Aaron) Miller, Tara (Shane) Dohrmann, Nick (DeDe) Adams; six step-grandchildren, Ty (Allisa) Racette, Brandon Racette, Michael (Emily) Racette, Chad (Molly) Simmons, Christa (Mike) Reed, Brett (Tonya) Simmons; fourteen great-grandchildren: Micah, Judah, Lily, Elijah, Kohen, Kinley, Kade, Kase, Connor, Coulter, Zoe, Brekston, Bentley, Briley; and seven step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a brother, Bobby Deighton, and a great-grandson, Keaton Miller.

James R. Lofland, 95. Passed away July 24, 2021, at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born April 7, 1926, in Stafford, KS, the son of James P. &amp; Leah (Keesling) Lofland. On June 18, 1949, he married Joyce L. Mohr in Wichita. She died October 5, 2019.

James lived most of his life in Great Bend. He worked for American Electric until he retired in 1986. He was also self-employed with Jim’s Lawn Service and continued working his business into his 80’s. James was an active member and trustee of Central Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Post #180. He always had a story to tell and anyone who met him most likely heard one or two of them. James was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII.

James is survived by his children, Janna Huschka and husband Kurt of Hutchinson, Jill Hopper and husband Derrel of Arvada, Colo., Jerry Lofland and wife Paige of Great Bend, and Jackie Goosen and husband LoWayne of Freeman, SD; his sisters, Darlene Unruh of Houston, Tex., and Mayme DuBois of Oberlin; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents; his children, James Lofland and Julia Barnes; his brother, Arthur Lofland; and his sisters, Pauline Crowley, Alice Biskeborn, Letha Luther and Elise Hiss.

James was an active member and trustee of Central Baptist Church and a member of the American Legion Post #180. He always had a story to tell and anyone who met him most likely heard one or two of them. James was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during WWII.James is survived by his children, Janna Huschka and husband Kurt of Hutchinson, Jill Hopper and husband Derrel of Arvada, Colo., Jerry Lofland and wife Paige of Great Bend, and Jackie Goosen and husband LoWayne of Freeman, SD; his sisters, Darlene Unruh of Houston, Tex., and Mayme DuBois of Oberlin; 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. James was preceded in death by his parents; his children, James Lofland and Julia Barnes; his brother, Arthur Lofland; and his sisters, Pauline Crowley, Alice Biskeborn, Letha Luther and Elise Hiss.There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Amie Marie Snow, 43, died July 23, 2021, at Clara Barton Hospital, Hoisington. She was born August 12, 1977, in Great Bend, Kansas, the daughter of Robert Alan and Debra Kay (Batchman) Hapes.

On March 26, 2021, she married Marcus Todd Snow in Pawnee Rock, Kansas.

Amie loved spending time with her family, either at the lake or riding 4-wheelers. She especially loved being a grandma.

She is survived by her husband Marcus Snow of the home; three children, Nichole Batchman of Great Bend, Blake Aaron Ridgel and wife Sydney Dyan of Great Bend, and Kayle Kay Baldwin of the home; a sister, Jamie Rose of Great Bend; and a granddaughter, Zailyn Rae Wolfkill and one on the way, Stella Elaine Ridgel.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

A private family service will take place at a later date. Cremation has taken place according to Amie’s wishes.

Michael V. Grill, Sr., 73, died July 22, 2021, at his home in Hoisington. He was born November 28, 1947, in Salina, Kansas, the son of Paul and Hannah (Holcolm) Grill. Michael graduated in 1965, from Fairfield High School, Langdon, Kansas. He then served as a mechanic in the Army during the Vietnam War. He later returned as a civilian to work at Guantanamo Bay Detention Camp as a correctional officer.

On July 19, 1972, he married Dianna Koski in Lawton, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on February 8, 2013.

A resident of Hoisington moving from Great Bend, Michael was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints of Great Bend, Kansas and the V.F.W. #1431 of Salina.

He is survived by three children; Michael V. Grill, Jr. &amp; wife Ashley of Lawton, Oklahoma, Brian Grill and wife Shelby of Royse City, Texas, and Katherine Ashbaugh and husband Sherman of Great Bend, Kansas; a sister, Shirley Tucker of Hoisington; two nieces, Sarah Yoder, and Annika Koski; 11 grandchildren, Kody, Brian, Brianna, Kaci, Kylie, Kelsey, Emily, Dakota, Rileigh, Brennan, and Harrison; and one great-grandchild, Hazel.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday at Nicholson-Ricke Funeral Home.

Michael V. Grill, Sr.

Garfield - Dr. Kathleen Cheryl (Price) Spillman of Miami, Oklahoma, passed away at the Freeman Cardiac Institute, Joplin, Missouri, on Tuesday, July 13, 2021.

Kathleen was born March 7, 1947, to Lester Kenneth and Aline Clarabel (Irion) Price at Larned, Kansas. She grew up on the Price family farm 8 miles northwest of Garfield, Pleasant Ridge Township, Pawnee County, Kansas. She attended the Garfield Schools graduating in 1965.

Dr. Spillman earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Fort Hays State University, Hays, Kansas. Kathy worked in the Miami, Oklahoma Public Schools for years as a second and fifth-grade teacher. She worked for thirty years as a public-school teacher before she earned her Doctorate from Oklahoma State University and worked for Pittsburg State University training and educating teachers. She enjoyed quilting, reading and gardening. Kathy was preceded in passing by her parents, Lester and Clarabel, and brother-in-law, James O. Roberts.

She is survived by her two children, Matthew Douglas (Cheryl Stapleton) Spillman, and Mandy Lynn Hixon all of Miami, Oklahoma. She was Nana to Kyleigh and Addison Hixon, Kinson Spillman, Dameon Townsend, Kayla and Bobby Hilton. She is also survived by two brothers, Kenneth E. (Carol) Price, Garfield, Kansas, and Lester L. (Janet) Price, Allen, Texas; two sisters, Kay E. Roberts, Aurora, Colorado, and Carole A. (Mike) Tudor, Fairland, Oklahoma. She also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Cremation has taken place in the care of Brown-Winters Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Miami. A memorial graveside service will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, August 20, 2021 at Garfield Cemetery, Garfield, Kansas.

Ethel Francis Ringwald, age 98, passed away at Ellinwood District Hospital on July 18, 2021. She was born on September 25, 1922 in Ellinwood, KS to parents David F. and Francis (Sprinker) Hammeke. Ethel grew up on a farm near Ellinwood later graduating from Ellinwood High school in 1940. She married Wessel Ringwald on February 18, 1946 in Ellinwood, KS. They lived and farmed near Bushton for 35 years before moving to Ellinwood in 1980. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and other clubs in the area.

She was born August 20, 1927, in Dodge City, Kan., the daughter of Anthony and Mary Hoffman Klein. She entered the Dominican Sisters Community in 1944 and pronounced her vows in 1946. Sister Marie Antoinette ministered as a music educator, serving as a piano teacher and organist from 1946-2017. She retired at the motherhouse in Great Bend, but even then she continued to serve as organist for many years. Sister Marie Antoinette was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, both of whom were Dominican Sisters of Peace. She is survived by several cousins as well as the Dominican Sisters of Peace.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2021. A vigil service will be held Monday, July 19, at 7:00 p.m. Both will take place at the Sisters’ Convent. Burial will be in the Sisters’ Resurrection Cemetery, Great Bend.

Sister Marie Antoinette Klein

Rhonda Lou Blazek, 73, died July 15, 2021, at her home in Salina, Kansas. She was born November 17, 1947, in Glendale, California., the daughter of Chester H. and Anna Louise (Wray) Smith.

On May 21, 1966, she married Edward LeRoy Blazek in Dubuque, Kansas. They later divorced, and remarried May 21, 1989. He preceded her in death on October 14, 2005.

A lifetime resident of Hoisington, Rhonda was a long-time Hoisington E.M.S. director, also being employed by Essex, Albert Co-op, Fuller Brush and the Women’s Recovery Center. She enjoyed gardening, reading, tinkering with computers, and above all, time spent with grandchildren.

She is survived by: a son, Eric Blazek and wife Kristy of Hoisington; and a daughter, Chrystie Blazek and husband Rob Teschke of Salina; two brothers, Randy Smith of Great Bend, and Ron Smith and wife Christina of Hoisington; 10 grandchildren, Austin LaViolette, Nathan LaViolette, Ryan Meade, Shannon Meade, Steven Mickle, Karissa Wagner, Kelsea Wagner, Kaleb Blazek, Brady Blazek and Ali Jo Blazek; and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Chet and Louise Smith, husband, Ed, an infant son, Paul Lee Blazek, and son, Aaron Lee Blazek.

George Alan Winter, 81, passed away January 5, 2021, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita. He was born September 24, 1939, in Wichita to Edgar &amp; Edna (Miller) Winter. He married Mary Lee Ryan December 21, 1963, at Hays.

George Alan Winter

Joe Martin Gillaspie was born November 26, 1931 at his home in Texas County, OK, the second of eight children to Nimrod and Eula Pearl Gillaspie. He graduated from high school at Elkhart, KS in 1949 and attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS on a football scholarship. He graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1953. He later went on to earn his M.S. in Education from Fort Hays State College in 1959.

Joe met Juanita Hardy while attending Southwestern College. They were married on June 1, 1952, at the Pratt United Methodist Church. They celebrated 68 years of marriage.

Growing up on a farm in the 1930s, Joe learned many skills from his father and grandfather and had a reputation in the communities he lived in of knowing how to fix about anything. He also learned to hunt and fish, which he enjoyed throughout his lifetime,

He taught Industrial Arts and coached football and boys’ basketball and track at Hugoton, Coats, and Lewis. After earning his MS in Education Joe served as Superintendent of Schools at Vesper, Haviland, and Deerfield. Wanting to return to his true love of teaching and coaching, Joe and Juanita moved to Rozel in 1969 where he taught Industrial Arts, and coached both boys’ and girls’ sports for 23 years at Pawnee Heights.

Joe’s nickname at Pawnee Heights was “Papa Joe” and many of the students from the other schools picked up on the name, also. He coached football and boys’ basketball and track. In 1973 he began developing the girl’s athletic program at Pawnee Heights and coached volleyball, girls’ basketball, and girls’ track. Throughout his coaching career, teams he coached won league and regional titles in football, volleyball, and basketball, many of the boys and girls he coached in track were state medal winners, as well. After retiring, Joe refereed volleyball for many years with former players.

Besides teaching high school industrial arts, he also taught a very popular adult woodworking class for Barton Community College for a number of years. Throughout his adult life he used his woodworking talents to design and make furniture, toys and other wooden items such as lamps, bowls, and jewelry for family and sold items at craft fairs.

Joe was very active in church and Lions Club for many years in all of the communities where the family lived, His volunteer work at Pawnee Heights after retiring included keeping the clock at football and basketball games, serving as judge in Quiz Bowl, and as a starter at track meets. In January 2008 he and Juanita were awarded the Master Volunteer Award at the league basketball tournament in Dodge City. He also served two terms on the Rozel City Council where he helped the city secure a federal grant to complete and furnish the newly built Rozel Community Building.

Farming in Pratt and Kiowa Counties with his father-in-law started in 1952. After his father-in-law retired from farming, Joe, his sons, and two brothers assisted him until he decided it was time to retire and rent out the land in 1997. He also enjoyed hunting pheasant and quail with his Brittany Spaniels and fishing whenever he could for many years. Fishing became one of his favorite retirement pastimes.

Joe and Juanita moved to Rozel in 1969 and stayed 45 years. Due to health reasons, they relocated to South Hutchinson, KS where she lived out her last few years.

Joe is survived by his children: Jim (Barbara) Gillaspie of Hutchinson, KS, Judy Gillaspie of Tulsa, OK, Jeff (Jeanie) Gillaspie of Grand Junction, CO; grandsons Joel (Laurie) Gillaspie, Michael Gillaspie, Albert (Kritika) McClure, Chad (Lori) Scates; great-grandchildren, Emilee Scates and Rumi McClure, two brothers: Morris (Letha) Gillaspie of Douglass, Ks and Don Gillaspie of South Hutchinson, three sisters: Virginia Bracken of Burleson, TX, Belva McBee of Tyrone, OK and Betty (Larry) Davolt of Keys, OK.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife Juanita, brother Robert Gillaspie, sister Wilma Truhler, and his parents.

Services will be at Beckwith Mortuary in Larned, KS on Saturday, July 24, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. with Inurnment at the Rozel Cemetery, with a community dinner following at the Rozel Community Building.  </figure>Joe Martin Gillaspie was born November 26, 1931 at his home in Texas County, OK, the second of eight children to Nimrod and Eula Pearl Gillaspie. He graduated from high school at Elkhart, KS in 1949 and attended Southwestern College in Winfield, KS on a football scholarship. He graduated with a B.A. in Education in 1953. He later went on to earn his M.S. in Education from Fort Hays State College in 1959.Joe met Juanita Hardy while attending Southwestern College. They were married on June 1, 1952, at the Pratt United Methodist Church. They celebrated 68 years of marriage.Growing up on a farm in the 1930s, Joe learned many skills from his father and grandfather and had a reputation in the communities he lived in of knowing how to fix about anything. He also learned to hunt and fish, which he enjoyed throughout his lifetime,He taught Industrial Arts and coached football and boys’ basketball and track at Hugoton, Coats, and Lewis. After earning his MS in Education Joe served as Superintendent of Schools at Vesper, Haviland, and Deerfield. Joe Martin Gillaspie

Bobby C. Maltby, 93, passed away July 15, 2021, at Great Bend Health &amp; Rehabilitation Center. He was born on December 24, 1927, at Tonkawa, Okla. to Clyde O. &amp; Minnie E. (Burch) Maltby. He married Arbutus Ann Basgall on June 23, 1962, at Loretta, Kan.

A current Great Bend resident, Bobby had previously lived in Midland, Tex. and Oklahoma City, Okla. He was an accountant for Atlantic Richfield and later BP until he retired in 1981. Bobby was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict, and was a very talented guitar, violin and banjo player.

Survivors include his wife Arbutus "Boots" Maltby of Great Bend; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Donna.

A Rosary will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, July 17, 2021, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 2:00 p.m., all at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend, with Father Aneesh Parappanattu, MSFS and Father Terrance Klein presiding. Interment will be in the Great Bend Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the United States Navy. Memorials have been designated to Prince of Peace Parish, in care of Bryant Funeral Home.

Bobby C. Maltby

Douglas “Doug” Edward Stape, 66, passed away July 13, 2021, at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned. He was born January 1, 1955, at Jeanette, Pennsylvania, to Robert &amp; Edna (Wampler) Stape. He married Diane O'Malley on November 4, 1993, at Winchester, West Virginia.

A resident of Great Bend for the last 14 years, Doug was a cook for McDonald's. He loved to watch wrestling and the Pittsburgh Steelers football. He enjoyed bowling, playing cards and listening to music. He was a Veteran of the United States Army. Doug especially loved spending time with his family.

Survivors include, his wife, Diane Stape of the home; a son, Nicholas Stape of Larned; a daughter, Sarah Ankney of Greensburg, PA; two brothers, Robert Stape of Tennessee, and Allan Stape and wife Collette of Michigan; and three grandchildren, Maygan, Colleen and Kiara. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Douglas “Doug” Edward Stape

William Terry Blake, 81, passed away July 10, 2021, at Diversicare of Larned. He was born September 4, 1939, in Larned, to William Ralph &amp; Wilma (Keeton) Blake. He married Connie (Howell) Schuld November 6, 1959, and they later divorced after 20 years of marriage. He then married Alice Darlene (Bridwell) Short March 14, 1981, in Garden City.

Terry graduated from Rozel High School in 1957. He attended Fort Hays State University to become a CPA but after a year he changed his major. Moving to Great Bend from Pawnee Rock in 1986, Terry was a farmer. He also had worked in the construction business as well, until he retired in 2003, having worked for Larned State Hospital and Marlette Motor Homes. He was a former member of Extreme Hope Christian Fellowship Church, current member of Eagles Lodge #647, and enjoyed fellowship at the BPOE Elks Lodge 1127. Terry enjoyed fishing, hunting elk and sitting in his favorite chair, from his grandmother, in his front yard, watching the world go by. In his younger years, Terry enjoyed singing, along with his brother and two sisters, with the “Singing Blakes”.

Survivors include, his wife Darlene Blake of the home; his children, Jeff Blake (Chris Shelton) of Kansas City, Mo., Jill Eckfeld (Greg) of Warrensburg, Mo., and Jon Blake of Pittsburg; two stepsons, Kenneth Short (Tammy), and Donald Short, all of Great Bend; “forever daughter”, Debbie Lamb of Great Bend; his siblings, Sheryl Carmichael of Norman, Okla., Dan Blake of Dallas, Tex., and Sandy Blake of Norman, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Trista Calhoun (Sam), Nikki Blake, Cody Blake (Ashley), Brenton Blake (Kimberly), Benjamin Blake (Jessica), Kendra Veyon (Joel), and Kasey Vera (Joel); eight great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren, Merry Releford, Darcy Short Nye, Andrea Short, and Kendra Vonfeldt; fifteen step great-grandchildren; and his canine companion, Buddy. William Terry Blake

Reenea Bryant, 64, passed away July 12, 2021, at her home in Great Bend. She was born August 2, 1956, at Great Bend to Chester &amp; Dorothy (Farmer) Bryant.

A lifetime Barton county resident, Reenea lived in Ellinwood for 25 years and the last 19 years in Great Bend. She was the head of housekeeping at the Holiday Inn/Highland Manor until she retired in 2004. She was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Great Bend and loved reading the bible. Her favorite saying was "One Day at a Time." She enjoyed working in the yard. Her grandchildren were the sunshine of her heart and soul.

Survivors include her children, Misty Bryant of Great Bend, Ashley Trejo of Ellinwood, Lacey Lininger and husband Neil, Casey Hupfer, and Devin Hupfer all of Great Bend; and her grandchildren, Jacob Hoch, Dominique Hoch, Makayah Trejo, Elyssiah Trejo, Martin Trejo, Braylen Lininger, Jayvion Lininger, Alex Bunch, and Danasia Bunch. She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Dana Hupfer; a grandson, Gavoyn Bunch; and two sisters, Sharon Herrman, and Shirley Wedgewood.
