Clarence Richard “Dick” Meitler, 80, passed away September 14, 2023, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas. He was born on September 29, 1942, near Sylvan Grove, Kansas, to Clarence W. and Lois Bonnel (Zacho) Meitler. On December 13, 2008, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Tittel.

Dick grew up at Sylvan Grove, Kansas, and at age 14, he began working with his dad. They built water shed dams and helped with Lake Wilson. As he grew older, he turned to construction, working on many projects around western Kansas. He worked on the high rise, Walmart, Fuller Brush, and many other projects that happened in Great Bend. There was no heavy equipment that he wasn’t good at operating. He also worked for C.V. Cale.

In the mid 1970’s, he began managing Concrete Service. He also started a crane rental business. He retired in his late 60’s but continued the crane rental business for several more years. Never comfortable with retirement, he continued doing special projects for Concrete Service.

Dick was an avid duck hunter and spent many years hunting at Cheyenne Bottoms. He was also passionate about fishing and spent many days at Glen Elder, Wilson Lake, Milford, and Ten Killer in Oklahoma. He also enjoyed hog hunting trips to Texas with his brothers and friends.

Dick was a member of the First Christian Church.

Survivors include his spouse, Cynthia; two sons, D. Shane Meitler of Great Bend, Kansas and Trevor (Angie) Meitler of Hutchinson, Kansas; two stepdaughters, Stacy (Eric) Johnson and Shauna Young, all of Great Bend; fourteen grandchildren; five step grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; four brothers, Chuck (Lorraine) Meitler of Lockhart, Texas, Donald (Randy) Meitler of Wichita, Kansas, Daryl (June) Meitler of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Danny (Geri) Meitler of Plainville, Kansas; seven sisters, Judy (Richard) Werner of Plainville, Kansas, Linda Glisson of Stockton, Kansas, Debra (Steve) Iwig of Tecumseh, Kansas, Dee Ann Meitler of Sylvan Grove, Kansas, Vicky Wiles, Kathy Ashbaugh, and Cindy (Dave) Miller, all of Ellsworth, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Larry and Troy Meitler; a daughter, Karen Bender; his twin sister, Carolyn Gehring; brother, Dean Meitler; and sister, Alice Oller.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8:00 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, September 19, 2023 at First Christian Church, with Pastor Joseph Smeragliuolo presiding. Clarence 'Dick' Meitler, age 80

Norma Angeline Stricker, 91, passed away on September 15, 2023, at Azria Health Woodhaven, Great Bend, Kansas. She was born on November 22, 1931, to John and Rachel (Steinert) Karst, in Hoisington, Kansas. Norma married Glen Stricker on September 28, 1952, at Bender Hill Lutheran Church in Russell County, Kan. He passed on August 17, 2022.

A lifetime Barton County resident, Norma was a homemaker for many years. She later worked in the banking industry, in general banking for the Credit Bureau and as a teller at Security State Bank. Norma was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, serving in WELCA and as the Church Council treasurer. She had great interest in ancestry/genealogy, cooking, sewing, and was an avid reader. Norma was known for turning the end results of whatever Glen grew in his garden into canned items or baked into pies. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include, a son, Anthony "Tony" Stricker of Great Bend; two daughters, Cynthia Axman of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, and Michelle Lanham and husband Chuck of Fort Worth, Texas; three sisters, Dolores Deutsch of Hoisington, Kansas, Marjorie Kraft of Ness City, Kansas, and Rita Thompson of Kansas City, Missouri; three granddaughters, Alisha Hunley and husband Clifton, Baylee Lanham and Keely Lanham; two great grandchildren, Jarrett Hunley and KayLynne Hunley; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen; her parents; sister, Helen Schwien; and a grandson, Jared Axman.

Norma Stricker, age 91

Margaret Rose Unruh, age 85 went to her heavenly home on July 21, 2023 with her family by her side. She was born in Bronx, New York on September 23,1937 to Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft in Stanford, CT she married her college sweetheart, Rev. Victor C. Unruh on September 9, 1961. They met at Central Bible Institute and had 62 years of marriage.

Margaret was a licensed minister with the Assemblies of God. She and her husband, Victor pastored in many churches in Kansas and Iowa throughout their 50 years of ministry. She led children’s church, vacation Bible schools, kids crusades, Bible studies, and women’s ministries. She was on the district leadership team for the Kansas Women’s Ministries department for many years. After moving to Tarpon Springs her heart of service continued by working at her church and volunteering at the Advent Health Hospital gift shop.

Her cherished pastime besides reading was to her children and grandchildren. She embraced any moments of time to spend communicating with them through texting, phone calls, and emails. Prayers were sent up every morning during her devotion time with Victor. Her love for the Lord could always be seen through her kind, gentle sweet spirit in all her relationships with others. She truly wanted others to know and love the Lord as she did.

In addition to her husband, Victor, she is survived by her children, Laurie Madsen (Kent) of Montgomery, IL and Cheri Stancer (Robb) of Livonia, MI; her brother, George Ashcroft of Trinity, FL; five grandchildren, Kailea Leal (Isai), Brianna Stancer, Kameron Stancer, Kirsten Madsen and Trey Madsen; and two great granddaughters Adelina and Raya Leal. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Albert and Annie (Buick) Ashcroft; and her two sisters, Barbara Tollefson and Irene Gunderson.

There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A Graveside Memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 23, 2023 at Dundee Valley Cemetery, Dundee, KS, with Reverend Robb Stancer presiding. Margaret Unruh, age 85

Larry Laurence Nutting, 84, passed away August 28, 2023, at the University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus. He was born December 25, 1938, in Haskell County, Kan. to Harlie Edwin and Helen Luticia (Sanders) Nutting. He married Dorothy Welsch February 14, 1960, in Kinsley.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Larry was the Director of Manufacturing for Cross Manufacturing, Lewis, and Fuller Brush Industries, Great Bend, retiring in 2003. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Kinsley and attended Encounter Church in Great Bend. He taught Sunday School and was passionate about spreading the Good News of Christ’s Salvation through his membership of Gideons International. Larry was a Boy Scout Troop Leader and Royal Rangers Leader, and enjoyed nature, especially hunting and fishing.

Survivors include, his wife Dorothy of the home; a daughter, Lori Katz and husband Randy of Wichita; two sons of the heart, Mark Welsch and Troy Welsch; a brother, Michael Nutting (Carla) of Crosby, Texas; a sister, Rita Giles of Saskatchewan, Canada; two grandchildren, Tara Katz (Tyson Bean) and Kelsey Aitchison (Samuel); and one great grandson, Asher Aitchison. Larry Nutting, age 84

James (Jim) Allen Woods trucked into Heaven to meet his Lord peacefully at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center in Sturgis, South Dakota Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at the age of 86. Jim was born in Ormsby, Minnesota in 1937 to Otho Glenn and Marie (Kreuger) Woods. Jim served his country in the US Army and spent several years in Germany after discharge.

Jim was in the trucking business for over 40 years. He traveled a million miles to many destinations in every state and met great friends along the way. Jim was a resident of Great Bend, Kansas for many years and enjoyed his later years in Spearfish, South Dakota painting and winning everyone’s nickels playing Bingo with fellow Veterans.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Marie Woods, his brothers Vernon Woods and Charles “Chuck” Woods, and his grandson Darin Hearn. Jim is survived by his sisters Colleen Abernathy of Spearfish, South Dakota, and Verna Gail Pochop of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brothers Otho Glenn “G.W.” (Sue)Woods, Jr. of Rush Center, KS, Gary (Kathy) Woods of Colome, SD, and David (Linda) Woods of Rush Center, KS; sons James Woods, Jr of Germany, William Woods of Russell, KS and Wayne Woods of Hoisington, KS; grandchildren Shaun Woods, Nicole Woods-Betts and Austin Woods; and great-grandchildren. Along with many nieces, nephews and cousins whom he loved tremendously and loved to tease even more.

James 'Jim' Woods, age 86

Fred W. Berger Jr., 95, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas.

He was born January 12, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Fred W. Berger Sr. and Fern (Walsh) Berger. His mother passed away when he was 13 months old, and he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Bessie P. Walsh in Tescott, Kansas, who passed away when he as 17. He married Barbara Windscheffel, to which they were blessed with three children, Brent, Brad, and Babette. They later divorced. On March 17, 1976, he married Wilma Jean Korbe and she preceded him in death on October 31, 2022.

Fred graduated from Tescott High School and after graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., serving from 1946 – 1948. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska where he received a degree in Business Administration in 1953. He later was selected as an All-Conference Guard by the Lincoln Star Journal in Lincoln, Nebraska. He then attended the Hartford Accident and Indemnity School in Hartford, Connecticut where he received his degree in Insurance in 1956. In 1957, he completed the Dale Carnegie Course, and in 1958, attended the American Property and Casualty School. In 1963, he received his Life Underwriting Training Council (LUTC) designation.

Fred was a field representative for the Hartford Insurance Company following college. Fred worked in several insurance agencies until in 1968, when he and silent partner Leo Dreiling formed Insurance Planning, Inc. (IPI). Fred was very committed to his profession and under his direction IPI grew from two employees in 1968 to one of the largest agencies in Kansas. During Fred’s career he earned the following designations: Certified Insurance Councilor (CIC), Certified Long Term Care Counselor (CLTC), Advisor in Insurance (AAI), and Long-Term Care Professional (LTCP). Fred served as the President of the Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) of Kansas. In 1978, the PIA named Fred the Professional Agent of the Year for the State. Due to Fred’s innovative marketing ideas, in 1989, Insurance Planning was nominated as the Marketeer of the Year out of 4000 Independent Agents in the United States and Canada. Fred is co-author of “The Oilfield Manual”. In 1992, he sold their controlling interest in Insurance Planning, Inc. to the other seven Junior Partners. He remained working for a time as a Long-Term Care Salesman.

Fred was a former member of the Presidents Club at Fort Hays State University, Smoky Hill Country Club, Charter Member of the Ambassador Club, past Member of the Baseball Association, and Co-Chairman of the Financial Division of the United Way of Ellis County, and Board Member of the Heartland Community Foundation all in Hays, as well as Charter Member of the Ambassador Clubs of Great Bend and Hays, Great Bend Kiwanis Club and Board Member, past O&amp;E Chairman of Boy Scouts of America and United Fund Board all of Great Bend. He was a beloved child of Christ and a former member of Celebration Community Church in Hays before moving to Great Bend in 2014. He is currently a member of the First Christian Church of Great Bend.

Survivors include his son, Brad A. Berger of Aptos, CA, stepdaughter, Debra J. (Clayton) Noffsinger of Great Bend, half-brother, Charles (Sally) Berger of Soddy, TN, brother-in-law, Francis McIntosh of Smith Center, sister-in-law, Darlene

Hammerschmidt of Hutchinson, daughter-in-law, Mary LaFlamme of Hays, grandchildren, Lana McClanahan, John Kinderknecht, Candi Pfannenstiel, Jeffrey Noffsinger, Jennifer (Nathan) Sullivan, Cory (Sheena) Noffsinger, Jacki Klug, and 18 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, his parents, son, Brent Berger, daughter, Babette Kinderknecht, stepsons, William Allen Korbe and Walter Joseph Korbe, brother-in-law, Charles Oscar McIntosh, sisters-in-law, Leona McIntosh and Dorothy Fross, and a step granddaughter, Emily Faye Noffsinger.

 </figure>Fred W. Berger Jr., 95, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2023 at River Bend Assisted Living in Great Bend, Kansas.He was born January 12, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Fred W. Berger Sr. and Fern (Walsh) Berger. His mother passed away when he was 13 months old, and he was raised by his maternal grandmother, Bessie P. Walsh in Tescott, Kansas, who passed away when he as 17. He married Barbara Windscheffel, to which they were blessed with three children, Brent, Brad, and Babette. They later divorced. On March 17, 1976, he married Wilma Jean Korbe and she preceded him in death on October 31, 2022.Fred graduated from Tescott High School and after graduating, he joined the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C., serving from 1946 – 1948. After his discharge from the Navy, he attended Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska where he received a degree in Business Administration in 1953. He later was selected as an All-Conference Guard by the Lincoln Star Journal in Lincoln, Nebraska. He then attended the Hartford Accident and Indemnity School in Hartford, Connecticut where he received his degree in Insurance in 1956. In 1957, he completed the Dale Carnegie Course, and in 1958, attended the American Property and Casualty School. In 1963, he received his Life Underwriting Training Council (LUTC) designation.Fred was a field representative for the Hartford Insurance Company following college. Fred worked in several insurance agencies until in 1968, when he and silent partner Leo Dreiling formed Insurance Planning, Inc. (IPI). Fred was very committed to his profession and under his direction IPI grew from two employees in 1968 to one of the largest agencies in Kansas. During Fred’s career he earned the following designations: Certified Insurance Councilor (CIC), Certified Long Term Care Counselor (CLTC), Advisor in Insurance (AAI), and Long-Term Care Professional (LTCP). Fred served as the President of the Professional Insurance Agents (PIA) of Kansas. In 1978, the PIA named Fred the Professional Agent of the Year for the State. Due to Fred’s innovative marketing ideas, in 1989, Insurance Planning was nominated as the Marketeer of the Year out of 4000 Independent Agents in the United States and Canada. Fred is co-author of “The Oilfield Manual”. In 1992, he sold their controlling interest in Insurance Planning, Inc. to the other seven Junior Partners. He remained working for a time as a Long-Term Care Salesman.Fred was a former member of the Presidents Club at Fort Hays State University, Smoky Hill Country Club, Charter Member of the Ambassador Club, past Member of the Baseball Association, and Co-Chairman of the Financial Division of the United Way of Ellis County, and Board Member of the Heartland Community Foundation all in Hays, as well as Charter Member of the Ambassador Clubs of Great Bend and Hays, Great Bend Kiwanis Club and Board Member, past O&amp;E Chairman of Boy Scouts of America and United Fund Board all of Great Bend. He was a beloved child of Christ and a former member of Celebration Community Church in Hays before moving to Great Bend in 2014. Fred Berger Jr., age 95

John Clifford Loflin, age 95, of Ogallah, Kansas, passed away peacefully with his wife and family by his side at the family farm on Monday, September 11, 2023.&nbsp; He was born on June 15, 1928, in Ogallah to loving parents, Clifford John and Katherine Barbara (Breit) Loflin. 

On February 4, 1950, he married the love of his life, Irene Mae Zerfas, in Hays, Kansas, and they shared an incredible journey together spanning 73 beautiful years.

John proudly served his country as a United States Navy veteran. 

Following his military service, John established himself as a dedicated entrepreneur in 1965 with Loflin Earth Moving and soil conservation business. It was very important for John to be a part of the (KLICA) Kansas Land Improvement Contractors Association for 55 years in conjunction with his business.&nbsp; 

He was also a part-time farmer, always with a passion for nurturing the land. In his younger years, John embarked on a career in construction, traveling from one job to another, often accompanied by his beloved Irene. Their adventures forged enduring friendships with coworkers and their spouses, bonds that remain strong to this day. Work was not just a necessity for John; it was his passion, and he relished the challenges of maintaining and operating heavy equipment. He was a true craftsman and a "shade tree engineer."

After retiring, John and Irene seized the opportunity to explore the United States during the winter months, including remarkable journeys to Alaska in their "souped-up" Fortravel. These travels brought them immense joy and allowed them to cultivate lifelong friendships along the way. 

In the rare moments he allowed himself a hobby, John dedicated his time to restoring classic vehicles, including Clifford's Jeep Pickup, IH Truck, assorted Jeeps, and a Model T. In his daily routine, John could be found at the shop, tending to equipment, and caring for the animals around the farm and shop. His dedication to his craft and his love for the land were evident to all who knew him.

John is survived by his loving wife Irene, with whom he shared 73 years of cherished memories. He is also survived by his children: John Michael "Mike" Loflin (Brenda) of Hays, Richard Loflin of Pryor, Oklahoma, Susan Anderson (Bill) of Topeka, Kansas, and Sandy Loflin Reetz of WaKeeney, Kansas; and a sister,&nbsp;Marjorie Miller. His legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren Tammy Gros, Corey Anderson, Isaac Anderson, Dylan Loflin, Dion Reetz, Ceri Coffield, and Reine Meyer. Additionally, he leaves behind great-grandchildren Sage Murphy, Henry Anderson, Elise Anderson, Owen Anderson, Marin Coffield, Emilia Coffield, Braden Gros, John Anderson, Elizabeth Anderson, Rinzlee Loflin, and soon to join, Oaklee Reetz.

John was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Judy Ann, and a sister, Barbara Rathbun.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Christ Lutheran Church in Ellis. Burial to follow in the Mt. John Clifford Loflin

David Miles Kearney, 72, of Larned, formerly of Belpre, Kansas, died September 1, 2023 at Diversicare of Larned, Kansas. He was born May 9, 1951 at Larned, Kansas, son of John Thomas and Regina Mary (Gonnering) Kearney of Belpre, Kansas.

He attended St. Bernard’s School and Belpre-Trousdale High School, both of Belpre, Kansas. He graduated from Macksville High School in Macksville, Kansas, in 1969. He was a 1971 graduate of Hutchinson Community Junior College with an associate of arts degree and a 1973 graduate of Fort Hays Kansas State College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Journalism.

David was an author, newspaper columnist, and unofficial Belpre, Kansas, historian throughout his life. He served as editor of the Kiowa County Signal in Greensboro for three and a half years, beginning in 1973. He authored several historical articles for Kansas publications and spent many years researching the history of Belpre and eastern Edwards County. In 1978, his book, Belpre, Kansas: The Story of a Small Town, was published. David’s goal in writing about Belpre was to preserve the history of the community. He was especially interested in the early years of Belpre’s history.

David’s interest in sharing the history of Belpre continued through his life. He was the author of the text for St. Bernard’s 75th anniversary book in 1976, the historical text included in St. Bernard’s Recipes and Remembrances cookbook in 1999, and St. Bernard’s Centennial Celebration book in 2001.

David was also the author of “The Belpre Observer” column in the Edwards County Sentinel, with his first column appearing in the April 9, 1998, edition. His column, “Belpre News and Views,” was published in the Larned Tiller and Toiler for over twenty years. Both columns were published through the first half of 2023.

David was a lifetime member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. He was a member of Belpre’s Keenagers group, served on the board of the Henry Laird Library, and served as secretary of the Belpre-Trousdale Alumni Association. He was an avid reader, collecting books related to the history of Kansas towns and Catholic Churches.

David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John Patrick Kearney and Thomas Michael Kearney; and sister, Mary Kathleen Sculley. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Louise (Goudy) Kearney, McPherson, Kansas; nieces Erin Kearney, of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Kristen Nolan and husband, Spencer, of Spring Hill, Kansas; nephew Troy Sculley and wife, Angela, of Leavenworth, Kansas; several great nephews and nieces and other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be Friday, September 15, 2023 from 9:00a.m.-5:00 p.m., at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, Kansas. Rosary and Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, September 16, 2023, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belpre, Kansas. David Kearney, age 72

Roberta Lee Gilliland Lane passed away peacefully at home on September 7. Her children were present and witness to a peaceful passage from this world to the next.

She was born November 22, 1930, in Agra, Kansas, the third child of Edwin and Florence (Faye) Gilliland. Her parents moved the family to Phillipsburg, Kansas when she was young. With the exception of a few years after graduating from high school in 1948, Phillipsburg was to be her home until January 1966.

In September 1952 she married Loren Dempsey Lane, recently discharged and returned from duty in Korea. High school sweethearts, they made their pledge that fall, and held true to it for the entirety of their 48 years together. Their union was blessed by the arrival of four children: Charles (1953), Loren David (1955), Susan (1957), and Tom (1959). During those years Roberta kept the household and lived deeply in the community of family and friends that had enfolded and nourished her since childhood. As the next decade unfolded, both Roberta and Loren were engaged in raising a rambunctious and energetic young family. However, by the mid-60’s a change was in the air…

In January 1966, Roberta and Loren moved the family to Hays, Kansas for them both to realize a shared goal: obtaining a college education. Loren graduated first (1968, a BA in Sociology), followed by Roberta in 1970 (BA in Elementary Education). Those years were an act of extraordinary teamwork between the two as there was also a household to maintain and children to raise.

Roberta’s career as an educator began in earnest after the family moved to Larned, Kansas in the Fall of 1971. For more than two decades she served the people of Pawnee County by educating their children - an obligation she considered a sacred trust. In the early years she was a circuit rider, substituting between Garfield, Larned, and Pawnee Rock. She then took on her long-term assignment as a 5th Grade teacher at Northside Elementary School in Larned. Even after retirement she could be found volunteering as a reading aide with children in the early grades.

Raised in the Methodist Church while growing up in Phillipsburg, Roberta continued her service to others at the First United Methodist Church in Hays, where she served in many ways, primarily working with the church youth. Roberta, Loren, and their family joined the First United Methodist Church in Larned upon arrival in 1971; she remained faithful to her Lord, her community, and her church in continuing service to others until her passing.

Loren passed away in November 2000. Moving forward into the late season of her life, she nevertheless lived and had her being in a great community of friends and family. The base was built upon her four children, seven grandchildren, and (over time) four great-grandchildren; however, the host was vast, including a large extended family and larger company of dear friends: “May I shine your light in my friendships, giving glory to you through all that I do, say, and think” (Col 3:12)

She is remembered by the many students who passed the doorway into her classroom; their lives and works a testament to and a benediction on her commitment, compassion, and care.

She is remembered by her children as Mom; by her nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as a source of unconditional love and support, always interested in what they were doing.

She is remembered as a steadfast, faithful servant of God; asking little for herself, encouraging excellence in others. When she encountered need, she provided help. When she encountered sorrow, she provided solace and support. When she encountered someone new, she acted with respect, kindness, and affirmation. Her love for and service to her Lord were manifest in her love for and service to those around her.

She is known by her Lord, in whose arms she now rests.

A Celebration of Life will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 at Larned United Methodist Church with Pastor Joshua Bolding and Pastor Gary Stokes presiding. Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 29, 2023 at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, with family present from 4-6 p.m. Inurnment will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 in Fairview Cemetery, Phillipsburg, Kansas.

In the early years she was a circuit rider, substituting between Garfield, Larned, and Pawnee Rock. She then took on her long-term assignment as a 5th Grade teacher at Northside Elementary School in Larned. Even after retirement she could be found volunteering as a reading aide with children in the early grades.Raised in the Methodist Church while growing up in Phillipsburg, Roberta continued her service to others at the First United Methodist Church in Hays, where she served in many ways, primarily working with the church youth. Roberta, Loren, and their family joined the First United Methodist Church in Larned upon arrival in 1971; she remained faithful to her Lord, her community, and her church in continuing service to others until her passing.Loren passed away in November 2000. Moving forward into the late season of her life, she nevertheless lived and had her being in a great community of friends and family. The base was built upon her four children, seven grandchildren, and (over time) four great-grandchildren; however, the host was vast, including a large extended family and larger company of dear friends: “May I shine your light in my friendships, giving glory to you through all that I do, say, and think” (Col 3:12)She is remembered.She is remembered by the many students who passed the doorway into her classroom; their lives and works a testament to and a benediction on her commitment, compassion, and care.She is remembered by her children as Mom; by her nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren as a source of unconditional love and support, always interested in what they were doing.She is remembered as a steadfast, faithful servant of God; asking little for herself, encouraging excellence in others. When she encountered need, she provided help. When she encountered sorrow, she provided solace and support. When she encountered someone new, she acted with respect, kindness, and affirmation. Roberta Lee Gilliland Lane, age 92

Albert Allen Whipkey, 77, passed away Sept. 10, 2023, at Locust Grove Village, LaCrosse. He was born on Oct. 2, 1945, in Fairfax, Okla. He was adopted a few days later by Albert A. and Beatrice S. Whipkey of Fairfax, Okla., and later Hoisington. Allen graduated from Hoisington High School in 1963 and graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Central State in Oklahoma in 1967 and a Masters of Science in 1972.

Allen married Diedre Scott in June of 1966 in Oklahoma, they later divorced. He later married Connie Hoss in Great Bend, Kansas, in October of 1998. She survives.

Allen served in the U.S. Army from 1968-1970. Allen then taught high school science classes, but mostly Biology, Chemistry and A&amp;P in different schools in Oklahoma, including Shawnee, Okla., and later at Great Bend High School for 18 years. Allen also taught outreach classes at Barton County Community College for a number of years. He was known as “Whip” to the students and loved the camaraderie he had with them. It was said that he made biology fun and easier to understand and the students always looked forward to hearing his hilarious childhood stories.

During his years in Oklahoma and later Kansas, he raised and showed Appaloosa horses. Next to his love of horses was his love of a brand new red corvette convertible purchased in the year 2000. This car was once used to drive the Grand Marshall in a Hoisington Labor Day Parade, as well as driven to several proms.

Allen was the owner of Cheyenne Trailer Sales for many years. He was an avid sports fan of all sports which included his grandchildren’s many games and he could be found in the bleachers at these games.

Survivors include, two daughters, Deana (John) Custer of The Colony, Texas and Kimberly (Steven) Bohanon of Frisco, Texas; one son, Robert Whipkey of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one step-daughter, Rebecca (Eric) Anderson of Otis; one step son, Russell (Heidi Rogers) Hoss of Overland Park; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Steven Whipkey.

Visitation will be held from noon to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023, at Bryant Funeral Home. Shirley Ann Reif, Branson West, MO, the daughter of Claude and Vica (Richardson) Hines, was born December 11, 1946, in Lebanon, MO, and departed this life on September 7, 2023, at the age of 76.

Shirley moved to Branson West, MO, three years ago from Great Bend, KS with her family. She was an avid University of Kansas fan, especially men’s basketball, loved spending time with her grandkids and was strong in her Baptist faith.

Shirley was an office manager for Petroleum Electric Company in Great Bend, KS for more than 20 years before her retirement.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Claude and Vica Hines, and one brother, Ronald D. Hines.

Shirley is survived by her daughter, Sheryl Peak and her husband, Travis of Branson West, MO, one sister, Barbara J. Bliss, Colorado Springs, CO, and two grandchildren, Allison Peak of Jefferson City, MO and Braydan Peak of Branson West, MO.

Shirley Reif, age 76

Mable Wilton passed away Sept. 9, 2023, at the age of 100, at Credo Senior Living Center, Hoisington, Kan., peacefully and surrounded by her children. She was born July 15, 1923, in Weskan, Kan., to Ed and Zona (Kroetching) Watt. She married Hugh Elmer Wilton Oct. 25, 1945, in Goodland, Kan. Hugh passed away March 16, 1988.

Mable’s work ethic kept her busy for a lifetime across the country. Mable loved to travel and the family vacationed annually throughout the entire western and southern United States. Mable was praised for her cooking, sewing and crafts, enjoyed her monthly visits to the local Heritage Club and in later years became a staple in the community seen sitting on her front porch enjoying a root beer float.

Mable is survived by her son, Larry Wilton (wife, Vickie), of Hoisington; one daughter, Toni Wilton (fiancé, Chuck Oglesby) of Stilwell, Kan.; four grandchildren, Laura Hall (Brandon), Tina Marchiana, Lance Wilton and Angel Vath; six great grandchildren, Jaycee Vath, Chantz Vath, Cambree Hall, Brodie Hall, Lane Wilton and Bailey Stevens; and one great great grandchild, Benjamin Stevens. She was preceded in passing by her loving husband, Hugh; a son, Gary, one sister, Pearl Lenhart; and a brother, John Watt.

Gerri Lynn Roach, 44, passed away September 10, 2023, at her home in Great Bend. She was born September 25, 1978, to Mike &amp; Linda (McLean) Copeland, in Hutchinson. She married David Roach September 13, 1997, at Great Bend.

A longtime Great Bend resident, Gerri was a cattle rancher and secretary for WGC Trucking. She also had worked for Orscheln’s and Holy Family School in the past. She was a member of the Methodist faith. Gerri enjoyed cooking, gardening and camping, as well as tending to the cattle. Her greatest love was spending time with her family. Gerri was known for “adding color to the dark”, always making the best out of the day.

Survivors include, her husband, David Roach, two sons, Wyatt Roach and Garrett Roach, and a daughter, Caitlyn Roach all of the home; her parents, Mike and Linda Copeland of Sylvia; a sister, Melissa Copeland Roach and husband Shannon of Great Bend; and Dixie.

Garfield – Shirley Sue Wilder, 87, passed away September 9, 2023 at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, Larned.

She was born May 31, 1936 in Sycamore, Missouri, the daughter of Archie Cloe and Bessie Mamie Baker Berry.

A longtime area resident, she was of the Christian faith. She was a homemaker and enjoyed fishing, taking care of kids, gardening, and was a mother and grandmother to everyone she met.

On July 4, 1954 she married Walter E. Wilder at Okmulgee, Oklahoma; he preceded her in death on June 10, 2006.

Survivors include: three sons, Earnest Wilder, Mark (Rebecca) Wilder, Raymond (Melody) Wilder; four daughters, Donna Murdock, Debra Griffen, Janice (Duane) Brown, Rosetta (Anthony) Bush; three brothers, James David (Jeanette), Ronald Joseph, Larry Allen (Gayla); forty-four grandchildren, seventy-two great grandchildren, and fourteen great-great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons, Michael Wilder, Kenneth Wilder; two daughters, Dortha Love, Marcella Wilder; two brothers, John Calvin, Elmer “Bud” Theodore; and three sisters, Martha Lee, Margerie Rose, and Mary Louise.

On November 2, 1952, Phyllis married Lawrence Mische in Trousdale, Kansas. He passed away on July 28, 1958. She then married Merle E. Gifford on June 1, 1969, in Larned, Kansas. He passed away on July 12, 2012.

Mrs. Gifford was a Basehor, Kansas resident coming from Bushton and Larned. She graduated from Wesley University and spent her working years as a registered nurse. Phyllis was a member of the First United Methodist Church. She was a long-time member of a bridge club with her best friends. Phyllis enjoyed crafts of all kinds: sewing, knitting, ceramics, wheat weaving and tatting. She also loved planting a garden, tending it and canning the rewards or enjoying her beautiful roses. Phyllis loved Precious Moments and was an avid collector of the figurines.

Survivors include two sons, Bradley (Drucilla) Mische of Richmond, Virgina, and Kirk (Annika) Mische of Basehor, Kansas; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Lawrence Mische; Merle Gifford; son, Gary Gifford; two daughters, Kathy (James) Ray and Mary Nolan; grandson, David Ray; and great-great-granddaughter, Maribelle Sims.

Phyllis Gifford, age 94

Douglas Dean “Doug” Karst, 60, formerly of Hays, died Thursday, Sept. 7, 2023, at Wheatland Nursing Center in Russell surrounded by family.

He was born Dec. 21, 1962, in Hays, the son of Albert E. and Doris A. (Ochs) Karst. He graduated from Hays High School in 1982 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doug worked as a contract pumper, bus driver, and was a route driver for Hays Daily News. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafts, playing poker, especially Texas Hold’em, and was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of all, Doug loved his family.

Survivors include two brothers, Tom Karst and wife Mary of Hays and Mark Karst and wife Shannon of Victoria, two sisters, Dianne Schmidt and husband Gene of Great Bend and Maryln Schumacher and husband Larry of Lyons, two brothers-in-law, Pat Herrman of Sturgis, SD and Lance Smith and wife Courtney of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steven Karst, three sisters, Lois Herrman, Patty Karst, and Lanita Smith, and a nephew, Dustin Karst.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at Messiah Lutheran Church. Inurnment will follow in Mount Allen Cemetery. (Ochs) Karst. He graduated from Hays High School in 1982 and was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. Doug worked as a contract pumper, bus driver, and was a route driver for Hays Daily News. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, crafts, playing poker, especially Texas Hold’em, and was a proud Kansas City Chiefs fan. Most of all, Doug loved his family.Survivors include two brothers, Tom Karst and wife Mary of Hays and Mark Karst and wife Shannon of Victoria, two sisters, Dianne Schmidt and husband Gene of Great Bend and Maryln Schumacher and husband Larry of Lyons, two brothers-in-law, Pat Herrman of Sturgis, SD and Lance Smith and wife Courtney of Hays, and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steven Karst, three sisters, Lois Herrman, Patty Karst, and Lanita Smith, and a nephew, Dustin Karst.Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at Messiah Lutheran Church. Douglas 'Doug' Karst, age 60

Garland “Garb” LeRoy Ensley, 100, passed away Sept. 6, 2023, at Medicalodges of Great Bend. He was born Nov. 11, 1922, in Jefferson, Kan., to Heber T. &amp; Lettie L. (Skinner) Ensley. As a young boy, Garb learned to weld having worked alongside his father in their “Ensley and Son” welding shop in Woodston, Kan.

Garb met the love of his life, Evalee M. Cooper, at a skating rink in his early twenties. They were married on June 25, 1947, in Stockton. In 1965, he and Evalee moved the family from Plainville to Great Bend. Then in 1974, Garb founded his own welding company “Garb’s Welding, Inc.” To this day, his sons continue to run the business and he would watch the cars go by on the highway from his front porch swing, often seeing one of the company trucks going by the house.

Garb was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, a man of God and was involved in his Faith. Though this was tested after the untimely passing of Evalee in September of 1995, he remained strong for his children and embraced the moments that he considered unforgettable. Spending time with his family was very important and they had many family fun outtings over the years including fishing, hunting, ball games, picnics, county fairs and roller skating.

When visiting with Garb, you were sure to have a learning experience. His recollection to capture special memories would make you smile when you least expected it. In the passing of Garb, may you remember one of his many sayings, “Accept the way life is now and be happy!”, “Enjoy your day!”, “Thank you much!” or “Take care!”

Survivors include, four sons, Ronald Ensley, Kevin Ensley and wife Tammy, Dr. Dennis Ensley and Gregory Ensley and wife Jan all of Great Bend; two daughters, Connie Ensley of Great Bend, and Bonnie Achatz and husband John of Wichita; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Ada Leota Belt, 95, passed away Sept. 3, 2023, at Diversicare of Larned.

She was born July 15, 1928, in Hooker, Okla., the daughter of Willard Earl and Ada Florence Parker Mead.

A longtime area resident, she worked as an LMHT at Larned State Hospital for 34 years. On July 1, 2009, she moved to Otis to be near her daughter, Linda Hughes.

On March 23, 1946, she married Lloyd Belt at Belpre; he preceded her in death on March 1, 1996.

Survivors include: daughter Linda Hughes and Keith Davis, Otis; daughter-in-law Joyce Belt, Kansas City, Mo.; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents, Willard and Ada Parker Mead; husband, Lloyd Belt; six brothers, Lloyd Mead, Roy Mead, Evart Mead, Vernon Mead, Eldon Mead and Carold Mead; and a son, Wesley Belt.

Larry Allan Fradd, 74, passed away after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s on September 4, 2023, at Medicalodges, Great Bend, Kansas. He was born on April 22, 1949, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Kenneth and Cleone (Wesley) Fradd.

Spending the past few years in Great Bend, after spending time in Colorado, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Salina, Larry was a manager/owner of a John Deere dealership. He graduated from Great Bend High School, Class of 1968, then served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force Security Service during the Vietnam Conflict. After return from service, he received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from Fort Hays State University. Larry enjoyed hunting and fishing is his younger years.

Survivors include a daughter, Corry Kelly (Justin) of Great Bend, Kansas; two grandchildren, Raelynn and Kimber Rowe; four step-grandchildren, Hayden, Brooklyn, Baylie, and Harper Kelly; a brother, Gary Fradd of Nevada; a sister, Kristy McComb of Texas; and a co-parent, Maribeth Benker of Great Bend.

Larry was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth “Sonny” Fradd, Jr.; and sister, Judy Sargent.

Francis Richard “Frank” Reifschneider, 74, La Crosse, Kansas, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023, at Rush County Memorial Hospital, La Crosse, Kansas.

Frank was born November 23, 1948, in Great Bend, Kansas, the son of Harold R. and Dorothy (Busch) Reifschneider. He had four brothers to share his early life with . . . Bob Reifschneider, La Crosse, Kansas, Paul Reifschneider (Michelle), Hays, Kansas, John Reifschneider (Debbie), Lenexa, Kansas, and Tom Reifschneider (Lesa), Rush Center, Kansas. He proudly claimed a host of nieces and nephews, all of whom he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one niece, daughter of Tom and Lesa Reifschneider.

He attended Fort Hays Kansas State College, Hays, Kansas, then served four years in the United States Navy. He was a very proud patriot to his country and insisted on flying “Old Glory” at whatever home he resided.

In 1976, he married Sharilyn (Ellis) Kuhn in La Crosse, Kansas, and loved her children, Shelli, and Ryan as his own. His four grandchildren were the light of his life.

Frank and his family moved to Garden City, Kansas, in 1986, where he was employed at several different banking institutions. In 2001, he and a close friend started a bank in Garden City, Kansas, and were very successful for 13 years before they were offered to sell the bank. He then retired, and he and Sharilyn moved to Wichita, Kansas, for seven years, where shortly thereafter, his health started to decline. They then decided they needed to return to their roots in La Crosse, Kansas, to be close to family and old friends.

Frank was a good “Uncle Dude”, a loving nick name from his nephews. He was full of compassion for the suffering of others and was not a complainer when his health turned downward. He was always up for a challenge and would dive in with great gusto on each until he succeeded. He, like Frank Sinatra, always “did it my way”. He will be missed by his old Navy buddies, his lifelong friends, his brothers, in laws, cousins, nieces, nephews, but most of all, he will be deeply missed by his wife, his two children, and four grandchildren.

Per Frank’s wishes, the family has chosen cremation. There will be no funeral service.

Bay (Rabbit) Robinson went to be with our good Lord on Aug. 31, 2023, at Midland Home Health and Hospice, Topeka.

He was born Feb. 25, 1950, in Garden City, the son of Roscoe Lee and Niata Irene (Taylor) Robinson.

Bay was of the Methodist Faith. He worked on oil rigs and at Calp Fur with Trapper, skinning animals. He belonged to Sons of the American Legion.

On Sept. 19, 2005, he married Linda Lou Dellinger at Hoisington, she survives.

Other survivors include five children: Tiffany Finke, Nebraska, Amber Callaway, Colorado, Bay Robinson Jr., Nebraska, Colton Halstrom, Ellsworth, Dell and wife Sierra Poyner, of the home; numerous grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

He went to join his mother, father, and sister and beloved friend Calvin “Trapper.”

Cremation has taken place and services will be announced at a later date.

Bay 'Rabbit' Robinson, age 73

Lucinia L. “Lucy” Krieger, 79, died Aug. 31, 2023, at Bramlage House, Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan. She was born Jan. 24, 1944, in Vancouver, Wash., the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Brady) Burtnett. She attended elementary school in Chase, and then the family moved to Hays. She attended junior high and high school in Hays where she was active in marching band, orchestra, and jazz band. It was also in high school where she started sewing and continued through adulthood enjoying quilting, sewing, and crafts.

On Sept. 2, 1961, she married Deryl Marsell, in Hays. To this marriage, three children were born Rhonda, Darren, and Douglas. They later divorced. She then married Carl W. Krieger on Nov. 9, 1970, in Hoisington, and they were blessed with a son, Daniel. Carl preceded her in death on June 25, 2006.

Lucy worked as a CNA in two different nursing homes in Hoisington and eventually transferred into housekeeping at the Great Bend Manor. She also worked at Wendy’s in Great Bend and later worked for a short time at Walmart in Manhattan.

 </figure>Lucinia L. “Lucy” Krieger, 79, died Aug. 31, 2023, at Bramlage House, Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan. She was born Jan. 24, 1944, in Vancouver, Wash., the daughter of Howard and Ruth (Brady) Burtnett. She attended elementary school in Chase, and then the family moved to Hays. She attended junior high and high school in Hays where she was active in marching band, orchestra, and jazz band. It was also in high school where she started sewing and continued through adulthood enjoying quilting, sewing, and crafts.On Sept. 2, 1961, she married Deryl Marsell, in Hays. She also worked at Wendy’s in Great Bend and later worked for a short time at Walmart in Manhattan.Survivors include: four children, Rhonda Carryer and husband Robert of Ogden, Darren Marsell and wife Kris of Lorraine, Douglas Marsell and wife Karen of Russell, and Daniel Krieger of Ottumwa, Iowa; sister Judy Kile and husband Don of Morris, Illinois; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Burtnett, mother, Ruth Mason, and stepfather, Shorty Mason, stepfather, Willard Yarger and stepmother, Clara Yarger, and husband Carl Krieger.Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday with family to greet friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, celebrated by Father Warren Stecklein.
