This is day 6 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest continues across Kansas, with the USDA reporting it halfway complete, behind last year but close to the five-year average. Farmers are still seeing the effects of heavy rainfall, with muddy fields and delayed progress in several areas. Despite the setbacks, farmers across the state continue to make progress as June comes to an end.

Officially, the Kansas wheat harvest is 53 percent complete, well behind 76 percent complete last year but near 56 percent average, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service crop progress report for the week ending June 29, 2025. Winter wheat conditions were rated 24 percent poor to very poor, 28 percent fair and 48 percent good to excellent.

In south central Kansas and north along the I-135 corridor, excessive rainfall on mature wheat has made harvest difficult. As fields start to dry out and combines cut around mud holes, some localized quality issues are being reported.

In Edwards County, farmer Danny Hattrup started cutting around June 17 and is now about two-thirds of the way through harvest. He’s hoping to wrap things up within the next week. Progress has been slowed by rain delays and lingering muddy spots, which have made fieldwork more complicated than usual.&nbsp;

On Monday, the field Hattrup was cutting was yielding around 50 bushels per acre, with a test weight a little below an average year, around 59 pounds per bushel. Hattrup planted two different wheat varieties this season, and both are performing about the same so far.&nbsp;

This past weekend, harvest became a true team effort with help from his daughters, Brooke and Shelby and his son-in-law Cole, all pitching in to keep things moving.

Harvest is underway in Scott County, where Brinlee McNary, grain merchandiser for the Scott Coop, reported they took in their first load on June 20. She said timely spring rains helped the wheat significantly in the area, contributing to a strong start. The elevator has received about 40 percent of its expected volume so far.

Yields have been highly variable, ranging from 40 to 80 bushels per acre, but McNary noted yields are a little higher than in an average year. Protein levels have ranged from 7 to 15 percent, with the average coming in just under 12 percent.

McNary said the main challenges of this harvest have been the wet conditions and the presence of wheat streak mosaic virus, which has affected some fields in the area.

United Way of Central Kansas will host the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee on July 10 at First Kansas Bank to announce and thank the Pacesetters.

Each campaign, United Way calculates the top Workplace Campaigns-combining donor contributions and corporate dollars to determine the Campaign Pacesetters.

Last year, the top 15 companies collectively raised $95,000, accounting for 42% of UWCK's total campaign funds for the year.

United Way to honor workplace pacesetters July 10 in Great Bend

While it isn’t technically correct to say that Jyl Nokes started in on the ground floor at Heart of Kansas Family Health Care, she has played major roles in the agency’s “exponential” growth during the past 24 years.

Nokes, who began her career at Heart of Kansas in September 2001, will retire from her chief-operations-officer position at the end of July.

A retirement party is set for 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31 at Dry Lake Brewing, 1305 Main.

“I started as a part-time office assistant back when the clinic was known as We Care,” Nokes said. “Over the years, I also have filled in temporarily as the chief executive officer and chief financial officer.”

We Care opened in 1995 in the 3000 block of 10th Street. Five years later, the next location was 1908 12th.

“The following year we received the grant to become a Federally Qualified Health Center,” Nokes recalled. “We are a safety net for people who are uninsured or underinsured through the use of a sliding-fee scale.

“However, we always accept patients who do have insurance. All our services and providers are here for everyone.”

The move to the main clinic’s current location at 1905 19th came in 2003. The name changed to Heart of Kansas Family Health Care in 2009.

“The name ‘We Care’ didn’t really describe our mission. We would get calls from people who asked what we cared about,” Nokes laughed.

To illustrate the growth of Heart of Kansas, Nokes was the seventh employee at the clinic; today, there are approximately 90.

“We have always focused on primary care for our patients,” she noted. “Nevertheless, even in the early years we offered some behavioral-health and case-

management services. Both primary and behavioral care have expanded significantly over the years, which led to our building getting a bit overcrowded.

“The answer was renting the annex building for six years and then purchasing it last year to accommodate the growth. This annex, which is just south of the main building, is home to behavioral-health services and administrative positions.”

One of the most important service additions is the full gamut of general dentistry, Nokes commented. Three dentists serve Heart of Kansas patients on the east side of the main building.

“This is so important because dental health is crucial to our overall health,” Nokes said. “We have been so fortunate to recruit three professional, compassionate dentists.”

Throughout her time as COO, Nokes has had a long list of responsibilities. They include: payroll; accounts payable; information-technology assistance; coordination of departments; ensuring the effective use of resources; and numerous other financial and administrative duties.

Nokes wanted to spend her career at Heart of Kansas because “I have always liked the people here and have enjoyed watching the agency grow. Also, I have always liked the work I do; there is something different every day.

“And maybe the best part has been the rewards of working in public health to accommodate those who can’t afford insurance.”

During her retirement, Nokes looks forward to traveling with her husband and “taking one day at a time.”

Brett Middleton, chief executive officer, noted “we are all happy for Jyl and hope she enjoys a well-deserved retirement. She has served Heart of Kansas in so many roles over the years to the benefit of our patients and providers. We will miss her.”

Heart of Kansas Family Health Care is a Federally Qualified Health Center, which allows it to be a safety net for patients who are uninsured or underinsured. Its professional providers also welcome those with insurance at the Great Bend, Larned and Stafford locations. Heart of Kansas is open to everyone.

The 10-39 Café in Ellinwood is the first business to make use of the
third round of the Façade Improvement Grant program through Barton County.
Barton County Commissioners approved the application from 10-39 at Tuesday’s
meeting to improve their building at 104 West 1st Street in
Ellinwood. 


Co-owner Brittney Bailey said the café is in the process of constructing a “park
shelter” that will provide overflow seating outside for the restaurant, but
also provide a space for community events.


"We would like to start something called 'Market Mondays,'" said Bailey. "This would allow people to come in and set up, kind of like a farmer's market, right there at the corner of 1st and Main. People could bring vegetables or sourdough, things like that, and sell it to the community. That would be a free event. People could also use it during After Harvest Festival and different parties."

10-39 Café was awarded a $20,000 grant to help with the project. The 10-39 Café will shell out 25% of the project, a $6,805 match. 

Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson
said this grant is the first approval in cooperation with a city. The City of
Ellinwood will contribute half of the grant with the county paying the other
half.


"The City of Ellinwood is doing half of it, and we're doing half of it," said Hutchinson. "Together, with the city and county partnership, we hope to see Ellinwood grow and the business grow right there on Main Street."

Bailey said the hope is to have the project completed in time for Ellinwood’s

materials delays the project it is expected to be finished by the end of the

Between 2021, when the facade program was initiated, and 2023, the commission allocated $880,000 toward the effort. Barton County has pledged another $120,000 for the program in 2025 with the participating cities of Claflin, Ellinwood and Hoisington each pitching in matching grants.

So far, 10 applications from nine businesses have been received for this round. To date, $862,705.07 has been paid out, with Sauer Chiropractic anticipated for payment within the month.

The Great Bend Bat Cats baseball team assisted the Great Bend Recreation Commission Monday afternoon. Members of the team installed new mulch around the landscaping at the My Backyard Playground on 18th Street.

The Great Bend Rec is hosting a community night at the Bat Cats game Thursday, July 3. Free hot dogs, snow cones and raffle drawings will be available. Great Bend will face the Kingman Islanders with first pitch at 7 p.m. at Al Burns Field with free admission.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation released the <a href="https://www.kansas.gov/kbi/stats/docs/pdf/2024%20Crime%20Index.pdf?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery">2024 Kansas Crime Index
Report</a>.
With an estimated population of just under 25,000, law enforcement in Barton
County reported a total of 337 crime offenses, of which 70 were listed as
violent crime offenses.

Data is dependent on victims reporting crimes and statistics are gathered from
reports submitted by local law enforcement agencies. Barton County’s stats
derive from the Barton County Sheriff’s Office, Great Bend Police Department,
Hoisington Police Department, Ellinwood Police Department and the Claflin
Police Department.


In 2024, the report showed Barton County handled one murder, 12 rape cases, two
robberies, 51 burglaries, 198 thefts, 18 motor vehicle thefts and five arson
cases.


The 2024 Kansas Crime Index Report indicated that violent crime in Kansas

Barton County’s 2024 crime index report released by the KBI

Ellinwood Rotary Club announced the selection of Rick
and Colleen Bowman as Grand Marshals for the Ellinwood After Harvest Festival
Parade Saturday, July 19 starting at 10 a.m. on Main Street in Ellinwood. 


Rick Bowman retired from the City Of Ellinwood in 2015 and has worked since for USD 355 in a part-time position. Rick retired after 29 years as the City's power plant operator
and with trash service. 

Colleen retired in 2020 from CPI after 24 years. 
About the same time Marilyn Sauber asked Colleen if she would dispatch once a
week at the Senior Center as a volunteer for Public Transportation. Colleen
soon learned that there were many more volunteer activities at the local senior
center. Soon she found herself as Chair of the Ellinwood Commission on Aging.
It was discovered that the 501(c)(3) tax exempt status had been suspended and
with the help of others Colleen was able to have it reinstated. Colleen was
instrumental in applying for a grant to purchase a newer Public Transportation
van. Colleen manages the Public Transportation program operated out of the
Ellinwood Heritage Center. Colleen‘s official title is site manager and
this includes supervising 10 meal on wheel volunteers, 13 Public Transportation
driver volunteers and three dispatchers.

Every year, the Fourth of July holiday ranks as one of the deadliest periods on the nation’s roads.

From 2019 to 2023, there were 2,653 traffic crash deaths in the United States during the holiday period, 1,679 of whom were the driver. Thirty-eight percent (643) of those drivers were drunk. Of the 1,679 drivers killed, the 21-34&nbsp;age&nbsp;group had the highest percentage (48%) of drunk drivers.

“Impaired&nbsp;driving&nbsp;is never acceptable. For some people, even one drink is too many to drive safely. While everyone is&nbsp;making&nbsp;plans with friends and family for Fourth of July festivities, it is crucial to also make plans for a sober ride home and completely rule out drinking and driving,” said Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office Director Tenille Kimberlin.

In Kansas in 2023, there were 2,200 crashes involving a driver impaired by alcohol. In those crashes, 1,258 that damaged property,&nbsp;1,188 people were injured, and 67 people died.

Drivers should be safe during this Independence Day holiday by planning ahead if they intend to drink. They shouldn’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get somewhere. Impairment clouds a person’s judgment. Drivers should secure a designated sober driver or call a taxi or rideshare for a sober ride home.

If a driver finds they are unable to drive, they should give their keys to a sober driver so that person can get them home safely. When a friend has been drinking and is considering driving, friends should be proactive — take away the keys and help them get a sober ride home. If anyone spots a drunk driver, contact local law enforcement.

The City of Ellinwood has approved this project which includes a $6,805.00 match by the applicant which equates to 25% of the project.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. MOTOROLA SOLUTIONS: Maintenance, Support and Software Update Agreement: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Dena Popp, 911 Director, will provide details. An agreement with Motorola Solutions was approved in September, 2020, for maintenance, support and software update agreement costs for two 800 megahertz radio repeater towers. For 2025, the invoice pricing for services is $65,628.00. It is suggested that the cost be paid through the 911 / Communications account of the General Fund.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. COUNTY ENGINEER: Authority to Award Contract – KDOT Project 5 C-5265-01: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Barry McManaman, County Engineer, will provide details. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) opened bids in mid-June for the no passing zones signing project in the southwest quadrant of Barton County. There were four bids with the lowest one being submitted by Sign-Up LTD for $69,542. KDOT asks that the County approve the Authority to Award Contract in order to move forward with the project. If approved, the contractor will install no passing pennants at the beginning of each no passing zone on County blacktop roads in the southwest portion of the County. The work is completed per the engineering study and design done by Kirkham Michael in an earlier phase of the KDOT High Risk Rural Roads project.

&nbsp; &nbsp;D. ROAD AND BRIDGE: Diesel Fuel Quotes: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chris Schartz, County Works Director, will provide details. Road and Bridge accepted quotes to purchase 50,000 gallons of diesel fuel. The quote requested a price per gallon, with the fuel price extending through June 30, 2026, or the 50,000 gallon mark is exceeded.

&nbsp; &nbsp;E. EXECUTIVE SESSION: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chairman Tricia Schlessiger will present. Barton County Commission meeting agenda (7/1)

On Wednesday, June 25,&nbsp; at approximately 4:15 p.m., an officer from the Great Bend Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle for a traffic infraction in the 600 block of Main Street. During the stop, K9 Niko was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle. 

After K9 Niko alerted to the odor of narcotics inside the vehicle, a search of the vehicle was completed. Inside the vehicle, officers located methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The driver, and only occupant, Chad Teichman, age 55, was placed under arrest, and booked in lieu of bond.

K-9 alerts to narcotics, man arrested in Great Bend for drugs

Kansas State University and the Kansas Agribusiness Retailers Association (KARA) are hosting two 2-day Summer Field School sessions on July 8–9 and July 10–11, 2025, at the K-State Agronomy Education Center (2213 Agronomy Farm Road), located just north of the K-State football stadium in Manhattan. The field days are the same on the two different dates. This year’s program will spotlight soybean and cotton production, with comprehensive, hands-on sessions covering:

· Crop growth and soil fertility for soybeans and cotton production

· Herbicide symptomology and glufosinate optimization

· 2-day program: $220 (includes lunch both days)

· 1-day option: $135 (includes lunch for that day)

· Earn multiple Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) and 1A credits (exact credit total forthcoming)
