The fatality rate of rabies in animals and humans is nearly 100 percent once symptoms appear. That’s why veterinarians urge pet owners to stay current with rabies vaccinations. On Saturday, March 21, the city of Hoisington will host its annual rabies clinic.
“In partnership with the Hoisington Veterinary Hospital, the city of Hoisington is going to be taking over the fire station on Broadway in Hoisington from 9:30 a.m. to noon for its annual rabies clinic,” said City Administrator Jonathan Mitchell. “Come by, check it out, come see your favorite vet at Hoisington Veterinary Hospital and get your pets vaccinated.”
Mitchell called the vaccinations an important part of the city’s health efforts, and also reminded pet owners that the vaccinations are required for pet registration in the city.
“In Hoisington, that is an annual registration,” he said. "It’s based on whether the animal or altered or not altered, and if you’ve registered them prior to the March 31 deadline or after. But certainly, if you’re taking part in the rabies clinic, you can get your city tags there.”
Those who choose another veterinarian for vaccinations can still turn in their proof of vaccination to the city office, 109 E. 1st Street, by March 31 to receive their tag.
