It’s a relatively new problem, yet most have experienced a low battery on their smart phone just before it’s time to record those important videos or pictures. Barton Community College and Nex-Tech have teamed up for a solution: city of Great Bend Public Information Director Addi Crites said solar charging tables will be placed as select locations in the city beginning in early April.

“The contribution on the city end is we’ll provide the concrete pad for the installation,” Crites said. “These solar panel tables are going to be installed at the Sports Complex, Brit Spaugh Park, Vets Park, and at the drag strip.”

Solar charging stations typically offer residents a place to sit and find some shade, all the while using solar power to generate enough electricity to charge mobile devices. Utilizing the tables in popular spaces throughout the city provides the most bang for the buck.

“It’s going to be a nice, sustainable, innovate way to upgrade the community spaces we have in the city,” said Crites. “It’s definitely a partnership between Nex-Tech and Barton Community College. I know the Barton Community College students and their instructors were the ones responsible for making it, so it’s really cool that we’re able to take something made at the college and utilize it here in the city.”

The goal is to have the first charging station installed at Brit Spaugh Park by April 8.
