The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, June 24th shows conditions unchanged for the state with 66% of the state totally out of dry conditions. Essentially, the southern two thirds of Kansas is almost totally out of dry conditions. The only parts of the state with some moderate and a bit of severe drought continue along the Nebraska border. Barton County is totally out of moderate drought with the southern three quarters just abnormally dry. Keep in mind this rating doesn’t include all the recent rain. The six-to ten-day outlook (July 1 to 5) indicates near normal temperatures and a 40 to 50% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (July 3 to 9) indicates continued near normal temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. Not so great for the wheat harvest but good news for our fall crops, especially corn.

Soils are the medium for growing most of our plant based food, fiber, and fuel. Just like any other living organism, plants have an optimum environment which can vary from species to species. For our primary crop plants, the variation is less. Let’s look at that part of the plant environment we don’t see – the soil. What does an “ideal” soil consist of? Today, the non-living part of the soil environment.

· An ideal soil should be 50% stuff and 50% not stuff. The 50% “stuff” should be broken down into 45% mineral and 5% organic matter. The “not stuff” space should be half air and half water. The mineral fraction defining a soil is composed of three soil particle – sand, silt, and clay. For most plants, a loamy type of soil (acting like equal parts of the three) is ideal. The organic matter fraction should be mostly stable and well-decomposed, the black stuff. This results in ideal water and nutrient holding capacity.

· The ideal soil structure is termed crumbly, or granular. It’s bulk density, weight per unit volume, should be around 1.2 to 1.3 grams per cubic centimeter. Not too dense and not to loose. It should contain a continuous pore system with a range of pore sizes from micro- to macro- pores. This allows for water infiltration and storage, root exploration, and air movement. The structure should be stable if left alone. The soil surface is ideally covered or shaded with vegetative growth or crop residue. This aids in water infiltration, while decreasing evaporative soil water loss and runoff/erosion. It also provides for a cooler soil environment during the heat of summer.

· Finally, chemically the soil pH level should be slightly basic to just above neutral for most crop plants. This isn’t only ideal for the plants roots system but is also the pH range where the seventeen essential crop nutrients are available in proper amounts. Outside this range nutrient availability can result in deficiencies or toxicities. And for certain soil types, aluminum can become available in toxic amounts.

In fact, summer is the season when there is an increase in emergency room visits due to fire and burn injuries. Safe Kids Kansas and the Kansas State Fire Marshal (KSFM) remind families to take simple steps to make sure your, “What I Did This Summer,” story doesn’t include a trip to the emergency department.

Data from 2019-2023 shows that as summer approaches, there is an increase in the number of fire and burn emergency department visits in Kansas. Emergency department visits more than doubled during this period compared to winter months. The highest number of emergency department visits occurred in July.&nbsp;

“Many families enjoy summer traditions that include fire, such as grilling food and making s’mores,”&nbsp;Cherie Sage, Safe Kids Kansas, said. “Be fire smart when you head outdoors and be prepared to take extra precautions when you may be far from a water source.”

When extinguishing the fire, drown it with water. If you do not have water, use dirt as an alternative. Continue adding and stirring until all material is cooled. However, do not bury coals, as they can smolder and re-ignite.

“Summer in Kansas brings backyard barbecues, campfires, and fireworks – but also an increased fire risk,”&nbsp;Kansas Fire Marshal Mark Engholm said.&nbsp;“Take a moment to review your escape plan, keep grills and fire pits away from structures, never leave flames unattended, and leave fireworks to the professionals.”

On Friday, June 27, the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce joined T &amp; L Fireworks for a heartfelt celebration marking a milestone: 55 years of lighting up the skies and enriching holiday memories throughout Central Kansas. A ribbon cutting was held at noon on the opening day of the selling season at their Superstore location in Great Bend.

It all began in 1970 when Tom and Linda Barnes, also celebrating 60 years of marriage in 2025, turned their passion for fireworks into a small stand. They grew their humble beginnings into the business it is today...from a single stand to a regional staple.

The Barnes family, now spanning three generations, stood alongside their staff to reflect on over five decades of growth, service, and fireworks. 

Co-Managers Christy Kuhn and Kathy Kaiser shared their gratitude, saying, “This business has always been about family, our own, and the families that come back year after year to celebrate with us. Reaching 55 years is a true testament to the generations of loyal customers and community members who have stood by our side. We wouldn't be here without them, and we carry that sense of gratitude into every season.”

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

The water recreation season in Kansas officially runs from April 1 to Oct. 31, as do the Harmful Algae Blooms (HAB) response program's active operations. Kansans should remain vigilant while engaging in activities taking place in or on the water, such as swimming, boating, and fishing.

A HAB may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep dogs away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g., direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache.

As the Great Bend Fire Department prepares for the possibility of a call
increase on the 4th of July due to fireworks, Fire Chief Brent Smith
said his department also keeps an eye out for illegal fireworks. Smith added
fireworks retailers are generally good with not selling anything that is
illegal in Kansas, but the state fire marshal, he and the city’s fire inspector
will go through locations where fireworks are sold.


"If there is any question whether I think it's legal, we're going to make them pull it off the shelf until they can prove it is legal," said Smith. "They would rather err on the side of caution than sell something that might cause somebody an injury or have a fire because of it."

According to the Office of the State Fire Marshall website, bottle rockets are
illegal in the State of Kansas. Also prohibited are the sale of certain devices
like M-80s, M-100s, cherry bombs and silver salutes.


Local authorities regulate when consumer fireworks can be discharged, meaning
the allowed times for fireworks to be discharged will vary from city to city or
county to county.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

🎙Post Podcast: 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services staff

It’s me again, writing another of the no doubt thousands of letters and e-mails and texts that you’ve received over the past month, ever since the House of Representatives approved—by a one-vote margin—President Trump’s beloved One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That bill is coming to the floor of the Senate, with the voting on it beginning perhaps as soon as Thursday. So this column is almost certainly too late to influence whatever decisions you and your fellow senators will make. But for the sake of the people of Kansas, I’ll reiterate a few points once more, just for the record.

First, some praise. The Senate version of the bill gets rid of the House version’s cuts to PELL grant eligibility, as well as its ill-conceived “risk sharing” plan, which would have made colleges and universities responsible for unpaid student loans, a measure that could devastate Kansas’s 21 independent (and mostly religious) institutions of higher education.

So that’s good! (Though it’s worth noting that the Senate’s idea of restricting PLUS loans for graduate school and perhaps simply prohibiting students seeking degrees in “low earning” programs from obtaining any federal student loans at all reflects a STEM bias that could, over time, disrupt music, arts, and humanities education throughout the state of Kansas.)

Beyond higher education, though, there is much else for Kansans to worry about.

Kansas has over 300 hospitals and clinics serving rural populations, many of which depend heavily upon Medicaid. The Senate version of the bill caps the ability of states like Kansas to tax various providers (such as health care businesses and managed care organizations), which might end up costing Kansas close to $4 billion in Medicaid funding, which would likely mean perhaps over 10000 Kansans losing coverage and the rate of rural hospital closure increasing further. Voting for this would not only be bad policy, but considering the support Medicaid enjoys in the state of Kansas (more than 70% of all Kansans support Medicaid expansion), it would be undemocratic.

There are over 175,000 veterans living in Kansas, with over 30,000 of them struggling with homelessness, and hundreds who currently receive housing assistance through the Veterans Administration. But the House version of Trump’s OBBB cuts over $33 billion in housing assistance out of the budget. The VA has already been forced to end its Servicing Purchase program, which provided mortgage relief to tens of thousands of veterans; if the Senate version doesn’t change this policy, and the bill passes, hundreds of Kansas veterans will suffer.

Kansas is a leader in renewable energy; over 40% of the electricity generated here comes from wind, creating an energy market that has attracted over $11 billion in investment over the past decade. The House version of the bill includes deep cuts to the tax supports and rebates that renewable energy industries and consumers receive, which have enabled them to thrive. The Senate version does delay the roll-out of some of those cuts, but ought to get rid of them entirely.

There is more I could mention, some of which isn’t in the One Big Beautiful Bill but is tagging alongside it (the proposed devastating rescission of funding for the Corporation of Public Broadcasting, for example). I recognize that as a conservative Republican, you likely have a very different perspective on some of these matters than I. Still, when it comes to Kansas’s small colleges and universities, Kansas’s struggling veterans, Kansas’s rural hospitals, and Kansas’s renewable energy entrepreneurs, I think we can agree on where this state’s interests lie. I hope you’ll vote accordingly.

 </figure>Dear Senator Moran,It’s me again, writing another of the no doubt thousands of letters and e-mails and texts that you’ve received over the past month, ever since the House of Representatives approved—by a one-vote margin—President Trump’s beloved One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That bill is coming to the floor of the Senate, with the voting on it beginning perhaps as soon as Thursday. So this column is almost certainly too late to influence whatever decisions you and your fellow senators will make. But for the sake of the people of Kansas, I’ll reiterate a few points once more, just for the record.First, some praise. The Senate version of the bill gets rid of the House version’s cuts to PELL grant eligibility, as well as its ill-conceived “risk sharing” plan, which would have made colleges and universities responsible for unpaid student loans, a measure that could devastate Kansas’s 21 independent (and mostly religious) institutions of higher education.So that’s good! (Though it’s worth noting that the Senate’s idea of restricting PLUS loans for graduate school and perhaps simply prohibiting students seeking degrees in “low earning” programs from obtaining any federal student loans at all reflects a STEM bias that could, over time, disrupt music, arts, and humanities education throughout the state of Kansas.)Beyond higher education, though, there is much else for Kansans to worry about.Kansas has over 300 hospitals and clinics serving rural populations, many of which depend heavily upon Medicaid. Animal Care Hospital announces partnership with AMC

When Wendy Lockwood came away from a recent meeting, she was thankful that participants “were aware of the vital importance of behavioral healthcare and the value of the CCBHC model in delivering that care.”

Lockwood is executive director of The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway; CCBHC stands for Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. The Center became a fully licensed CCBHC last year.

This model of care takes the holistic approach of caring for the whole person. In addition to care coordination, case management and all the traditional forms of therapy, a CCBHC offers housing, employment and veterans’ specialists, along with medication-assisted treatment and a pharmacy.

Thirty-five local and area stakeholders attended the meeting, which The Center hosted. Participants included: The Center’s employees and board of directors’ members; law-enforcement officers; Kansas legislators; four of the five Barton County Commissioners; representatives of Juvenile Services and Central Kansas Community Corrections; and a hospital administrator.

“This was an exceptional turnout of community decision-makers and funders,” Lockwood commented. “We appreciate these community partners’ commitment to our efforts to address affordable and accessible behavioral healthcare.”

Rep. Sherri Brantley, who attended the meeting, said she was grateful to make connections in person and learn more about a CCBHC “because it looks deeper into a person’s background and tries to discover the core issues. For example, are poverty, homelessness and/or drugs and alcohol involved in behavioral concerns?”

Because of Brantley’s 37 years of experience in education at all levels, she is especially concerned about children and their families.

“Parents sometimes get a bad rap,” she commented. “It may appear they don’t want to solve behavioral problems but sometimes they just don’t know where to turn. The Center and other agencies are here for them.”

Brantley, who serves on the Kansas House Education and K-12 committees, will take what she learned at the meeting to “satisfy the needs of schools and other entities, and share information about funding. The more knowledge I have, the more specific I can be about legislation and finding funds to support it. That is my job.”

The state representative also expressed her gratitude to The Center for hosting the meeting. “It was phenomenal for them to step up and make this happen. I look forward to more discussions; this was not a one-and-done deal.”

Participants also learned the results of a recent Kansas public-opinion poll, which show an increasing awareness of mental-health needs and strong support for continued investment in community services, said Michelle Ponce, associate director of the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas.

Ponce and Kyle Kessler, executive director of ACMHCK, made presentations at the local meeting.

“The survey illustrates that the increase in awareness and support since 2020 is quite significant,” Ponce reported. “For instance, when asked if they or someone they knew had experienced mental-health issues, 48 percent of respondents said ‘yes’ in 2019. It was 51 percent the next year and increased to 75 percent this year.”

Ponce speculates there are a number of reasons for this, including decreased stigma, particularly in younger generations; increased awareness of the impact of social isolation; increased rates of anxiety and depression after the global pandemic; and the normalization of mental-health care.

Another survey question asked if there should be continued investment in community mental health. In 2019, 67 percent said ‘yes’ and in 2020 the number was 60 percent. But this year, it increased to 89 percent.

“As awareness of needs grows, so does support for investing in services to meet those needs,” Ponce said.

Ponce also wanted to thank “Wendy Lockwood and her staff for their hospitality but more important, for the work they do every day to serve the community. This work truly saves lives. We also appreciate the meeting attendees who took time from their busy schedules to discuss community mental health.”

Kansas has 26 licensed community mental health centers, serving all 105 counties and providing 24/7 services regardless of ability to pay.

“This system is a safety net for behavioral health,” Ponce noted. “In recent years, the system has undergone a dramatic transition to the CCBHC model and now all Kansans have access to these expanded services.

“It truly is a game-changer because it greatly increases community services that include enhanced care coordination, as well as expanded outpatient crisis and substance-use-disorder services to meet mental, physical and social needs.

“In addition, it changes the way clinics are reimbursed for services to fully cover the true cost and allow for long-term sustainability.”

The significant investment by the State of Kansas in the CCBHC model, “for which we are very grateful, will continue to modernize the system to best meet Kansans’ needs,” Ponce added. “A recent statewide study predicts that for a 40 percent increase in cost, the CCBHC model will provide a 75 percent increase in access to care.

“That is an amazing return on investment and one that our opinion poll indicates is widely supported by Kansans.”

The Center hosts meeting to discuss CCBHC, survey results

The&nbsp;American Red Cross of Greater Kansas urges everyone to take three critical actions to stay safe during extreme heat:

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay hydrated&nbsp;by drinking a cup of water every hour, even if you don’t feel thirsty.&nbsp;Avoid sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay cool&nbsp;by spending time&nbsp;in air-conditioned places. If your home is too hot, go to a mall, library or cooling center.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay connected&nbsp;by checking on others and asking for help if you need it. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” said&nbsp;Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas.&nbsp;“We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. You could make all the difference by sending a text, making a call or knocking on their door.”

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO&nbsp; Remind everyone to drink water, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Aim for a cup of water every hour and encourage people to avoid sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. Babies should be breast-fed or bottle-fed often. Fewer wet diapers or darker urine can be signs of dehydration.

Encourage athletes and outdoor workers to take breaks in the shade. They should drink a cup of water every 20 minutes and take frequent water breaks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Help those without air conditioning find a safe place to go like a mall, library or cooling center. They can also take cool showers or baths to help cool off. Remind people to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in light colors.

Never leave a child or pet alone inside a parked car, and make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

HEAT ILLNESS SIGNS&nbsp; Anyone can become ill during extreme heat if their body can’t cool down properly. It’s critical to act fast as some types of heat illness can be deadly.

Heat cramps&nbsp;are signaled by heavy sweating and muscle pain. Take action by stopping what you’re doing, resting in a cool place and slowly sipping water. Don’t drink if you feel sick,&nbsp;and get medical help if cramps last over an hour or you have heart problems.

Heat exhaustion&nbsp;is signaled by heavy sweating, weakness, cool and clammy skin, muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting. Take action by stopping what you’re doing, resting in a cool place and slowly sipping water. Don’t drink if you feel sick.&nbsp;Loosen your clothes and place a cool wet cloth on your body. Get medical help if you don’t feel better, vomit or have heart problems.

Heat stroke&nbsp;is a deadly condition signaled by high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, confusion, headache, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting. Call 911.&nbsp;Move to a cooler place, remove extra clothing and use a wet cloth or a cool bath to cool down.&nbsp;Don’t drink anything.

IF THE POWER GOES OUT&nbsp; When a heat wave and a power outage happen at the same time, it can be even more dangerous. If your home is too hot, go to a mall, library or cooling center.3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay connected&nbsp;by checking on others and asking for help if you need it. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” said&nbsp;Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas.&nbsp;“We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. Don’t drink if you feel sick,&nbsp;and get medical help if cramps last over an hour or you have heart problems.Heat exhaustion&nbsp;is signaled by heavy sweating, weakness, cool and clammy skin, muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting. Along with the street replacement, the project includes the replacement of curb
and gutter and new sidewalks.

Weekend weather

With the 2025 wheat harvest in full swing it is time to think about weed control in wheat stubble. When soil moisture conditions are favorable, weeds that have been suppressed by the canopy will grow rapidly once crop competition is removed. In addition, weeds that have emerged through the wheat canopy will be damaged during harvest and will quickly begin regrowth. Delaying control can result in lost soil moisture that could be used for crop production, as well as weed seed production, which will cause difficulties in the future.

When thinking about weed control in wheat stubble, there are two priorities – controlling already emerged weeds and preventing later flushes. Making applications before weeds exceed 4 to 6 inches is necessary for good control of already emerged weeds. Residual herbicides are necessary to reduce the number of herbicide applications required to control multiple flushes of weeds.

Despite a growing number of herbicide-resistant weeds, glyphosate plus 2,4-D LVE and/or dicamba continue to be important for weed control in wheat stubble. However, these herbicides alone are not likely to provide adequate control of pigweeds or kochia, especially when applied in the hot, dry conditions that are common after wheat harvest. Some herbicide options commonly used to control weeds after wheat harvest are listed.

Paraquat (Gramoxone, others) is a Group 22 herbicide that can work well in place of glyphosate for nonselective control of emerged pigweed and kochia. If planning to plant corn or sorghum next spring, a tank mix of paraquat with atrazine (Group 5) will enhance the control of emerged weeds and provide some residual weed control. Atrazine labels have recently changed such that the only noncrop uses of atrazine permitted are for wheat stubble in wheat-fallow-wheat, wheat-corn-fallow, and wheat-sorghum-fallow rotations.

Metribuzin is another Group 5 herbicide that can be used instead of atrazine to enhance control and provide some residual activity.

One final note regarding paraquat. Limited research out of Australia suggests applying paraquat 2 weeks after a glyphosate application will increase weed control. This is called a ‘double knock’ strategy. This information is included here not as a recommendation per se, but to encourage careful thought about when you want to utilize contact herbicides in your fallow weed management system. If paraquat were sprayed with or before glyphosate, the rapid damage to leaf tissue with prevent uptake and translocation of glyphosate. However, if a glyphosate application partially controls weeds, there will be sufficient leaf area 2 weeks after application for paraquat to be effective.

Saflufenacil (Sharpen), a Group 14 herbicide applied at one to two fluid ounces per acre, is an option to provide postemergence and short-term residual control of Palmer amaranth, kochia, and other broadleaf weeds.

Tiafenacil (Reviton) is a Group 14 very similar to Sharpen in terms of weed control and adjuvant use.

Flumioxazin (Valor, others) is a Group 14 herbicide that can be added to burndown treatments at rates of one to four fluid ounces per acre for activity on emerged broadleaf weeds and some residual activity on broadleaf and grass weeds in wheat stubble. Flumioxazin can be mixed with glyphosate or clethodim (Select Max) for enhanced grass control. It can also be mixed with 2,4-D, atrazine, metribuzin, or paraquat.

Another group 14 herbicide that can be considered is sulfentrazone (Spartan, others). Sulfentrazone can be applied to stubble and will control Palmer amaranth and kochia as well as other broadleaf weeds and some grasses. Of the Group 14 herbicides discussed, flumioxazin and sulfentrazone provide the greatest residual activity; however, saflufenacil provides greater postemergence kochia control than flumioxazin. Research to evaluate Palmer amaranth control in wheat stubble was conducted in Hays during 2019 and 2020. Herbicides were applied approximately 3 weeks after harvest to Palmer amaranth that was two to three feet tall. Palmer amaranth control 4 weeks after application in general, treatments that included paraquat (Gramoxone) resulted in the greatest Palmer amaranth control.

Atrazine labels have recently changed such that the only noncrop uses of atrazine permitted are for wheat stubble in wheat-fallow-wheat, wheat-corn-fallow, and wheat-sorghum-fallow rotations.Metribuzin is another Group 5 herbicide that can be used instead of atrazine to enhance control and provide some residual activity.One final note regarding paraquat. Limited research out of Australia suggests applying paraquat 2 weeks after a glyphosate application will increase weed control. This is called a ‘double knock’ strategy. This information is included here not as a recommendation per se, but to encourage careful thought about when you want to utilize contact herbicides in your fallow weed management system. If paraquat were sprayed with or before glyphosate, the rapid damage to leaf tissue with prevent uptake and translocation of glyphosate. However, if a glyphosate application partially controls weeds, there will be sufficient leaf area 2 weeks after application for paraquat to be effective.Saflufenacil (Sharpen), a Group 14 herbicide applied at one to two fluid ounces per acre, is an option to provide postemergence and short-term residual control of Palmer amaranth, kochia, and other broadleaf weeds.Tiafenacil (Reviton) is a Group 14 very similar to Sharpen in terms of weed control and adjuvant use.Flumioxazin (Valor, others) is a Group 14 herbicide that can be added to burndown treatments at rates of one to four fluid ounces per acre for activity on emerged broadleaf weeds and some residual activity on broadleaf and grass weeds in wheat stubble. Flumioxazin can be mixed with glyphosate or clethodim (Select Max) for enhanced grass control. It can also be mixed with 2,4-D, atrazine, metribuzin, or paraquat.Another group 14 herbicide that can be considered is sulfentrazone (Spartan, others). Sulfentrazone can be applied to stubble and will control Palmer amaranth and kochia as well as other broadleaf weeds and some grasses. Of the Group 14 herbicides discussed, flumioxazin and sulfentrazone provide the greatest residual activity; however, saflufenacil provides greater postemergence kochia control than flumioxazin. Research to evaluate Palmer amaranth control in wheat stubble was conducted in Hays during 2019 and 2020. Herbicides were applied approximately 3 weeks after harvest to Palmer amaranth that was two to three feet tall. Palmer amaranth control 4 weeks after application in general, treatments that included paraquat (Gramoxone) resulted in the greatest Palmer amaranth control.Information provided by K-State weed control specialists.
