Wristbands are now on sale for Great Bend's Party in the Park, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at Veterans Memorial Lake. Bands, which may be purchased at the Great Bend Events Center, 3111 10th Street, are $5 ahead of the event or $10 at the gate. This year, band sales are cash only. Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis provided more details about this year's party to the Great Bend City Council Monday.

"Something I don't think we've had before is a caricature artist," Gaddis said. "She will be here from Kansas City. She can do up to 15 drawings per hour, so we're excited about having her here."

That caricature artist will be part of the Optimist Kids Fun Zone from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will also feature wet inflatables, temporary tattoos, a balloon and bubble artist, and the Great Bend Police Department dunk tank.

Fun begins that Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Oozefest Mud Volleyball Tournament on the north side of the park. The vendor fair also begins at 9 a.m., and the city is still looking for vendors. The Kiwanis Wet-Dry Parade begins on the south side of the park at 10 a.m. The Shifters Car Club will have their vehicles on display from noon to 5 p.m., and cornhole tournament registration begins at 5:15 p.m., with action starting at 6 at Al Burns Field. Gates for the musical entertainment open at 6 p.m.

"The bands this year will be Savanna Chestnut," Gaddis said. "She was featured on season 20 of 'The Voice,' Killer Queen tribute, then everybody's favorite, Homebrew."

Great Bend ramping up for 2025 Party in the Park on Aug. 9

On July 23, 2025, at approximately 12:15 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to a report of a burglary in the 2200 block of Jefferson. They were further informed that the suspect vehicle was fleeing at a high rate of speed. 

A deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office was able to locate the suspect vehicle on Main Street, traveling southbound out of the city and still being operated at a high rate of speed. The deputy was able to stop the vehicle in the 100 block of South 281 Highway.&nbsp; The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Mathyas Montoya, 20, of Great Bend,&nbsp;initially refused to comply with lawful orders from the deputy, but was subsequently taken into custody without incident. 

After completing an investigation, officers with the Great Bend Police Department discovered Montoya had entered an occupied residence and walked out with a firearm. Officers and deputies on scene were able to recover the stolen firearm. Montoya was transported to the Barton County Jail where he was booked and held for aggravated burglary and&nbsp; interference with law enforcement, in lieu of bond.

The Great Bend Police Department has an authorized strength of 33 men and women, and the department is nearly fully staffed right now. Police Chief Steve Haulmark sat down with Brant Daughtry on Wednesday's "City Edition" on 1590 KVGB/95.5M. Haulmark said it's not always about the numbers, but the variety of experience on the force right now.

"I have a patrol sergeant who is from Los Angeles and loves it here," Haulmark said. "One of my patrol corporals is from Buffalo, N.Y. One of my other sergeants is from Jacksonville, Fla. People come here. They like this community, and they end up staying. Those guys are out there working 12-hour shifts, answering calls from a cow at large to domestic batteries. They're prepared to go to any and all of the calls."

The GBPD chain of command includes Haulmark at the top, then three lieutenants under him. One lieutenant is in charge of records technology and training, another of investigations, and the third is in charge of patrol operations.

"That lieutenant, the patrol lieutenant, has the largest span of control on the PD," Haulmark said, "because he has the patrolmen and the sergeants and corporals, but he's also supervising the school resources officers, of which we have two, and we also have two dedicated K9 officers."

The department also employs four civilians, including Haulmark's secretary, two records clerks who are the face of the department when the public enters the building, and an evidence technician.

Great Bend Rec announces 2025 softball league champions

This article is the second in a multi-week series on wheat streak mosaic complex management to address the 2025 outbreak.

Last week, was the recommendation for wheat-free windows. These windows include periods 30 days prior to the start of the optimal winter wheat planting window by zone in Kansas. As the wheat curl mite is a community pest, coordinated breaks in volunteer wheat and other cereals will have the highest likelihood of lowering local and statewide mite levels moving into our 2025 optimal winter wheat planting date periods. This week, we address the role of other crops in the landscape.

Revisiting the role of other crops and weeds in the landscape The question about the role of alternative crops and grasses in the landscape is frequently raised. The general risk of species as reservoirs for the mite and virus complex depends on several factors, including:

1. How well the curl mite reproduces on a given host,

2. How susceptible the host is to the virus,

3. The presence of the host during critical periods over the summer,

4. How those periods overlap with the wheat crop, and

5. How much of the host is present in the landscape during those critical summer months (host density)?

That information was taken together to develop the relative risk of host species to harbor wheat curl mites over the summer (Figure 2). You’ll notice that the list includes cereal crops, weeds, and pasture grasses. In all, over 90 species have been shown to harbor the mites or virus to some level. Legumes are not known hosts for the curl mite or viruses.

Volunteer wheat left over the summer is the highest risk host because it checks all the boxes for risk. The curl mites will reproduce rapidly on volunteer wheat, it is usually present right after harvest, may be left through fall planting, it is susceptible to the viruses, and it can build to high levels in the landscape. This is why the first line of defense against wheat streak will always be volunteer wheat management (ideally during wheat-free windows).

Volunteer wheat can also “hide” in summer crops planted after wheat harvest as well as cover crops, complicating the ability to determine the risk of other crops in the landscape. For example, if wheat that is harvested in June and grain sorghum (or corn and soybean) is planted into that same field after wheat harvest, secondary flushes of volunteer wheat will be difficult to control.

Winter cereals planted early (during the wheat-free windows) for grazing or cover cropping may pose a risk for harboring curl mites. Species like barley, oats, rye, and triticale have all been shown to host both the mites and the virus at fairly high levels. When at all possible, early planting of these crops near fields that will be established with a fall wheat crop should be avoided. Including these crops in a summer cover crop mix can also be risky for bridging the curl mites and viruses to the fall wheat crop.

To a lesser extent, corn and sorghum can also host the mite and virus complex. These crops are generally considered of low concern for epidemics in Kansas. Most of the research that we’ve reviewed has demonstrated that these crops are most conducive to curl mite survival during early growth stages. So, for example, corn/sorghum at a young stage when wheat is drying down would be at higher risk for curl mites than late-planted corn. It appears that curl mites are limited to corn husks later in the season and can result in symptoms of kernel red streak through feeding damage. Kernel red streak is generally considered a cosmetic issue in corn, but can serve as a sign that curl mites were present. Most commercial corn hybrids are resistant to wheat streak mosaic virus and High Plains wheat mosaic virus and will not experience yield losses to those viruses. Importantly, it appears that curl mite populations rapidly decline in the corn crop after the crop reaches black layer.

Weedy grass hosts (detailed in Figure 2) are generally a lower concern, unless they are allowed to build to high levels and remain established through the summer months. Their role in epidemics is dictated by their abundance and the time they are allowed to persist in the landscape.

CAMPBELL: Wheat streak mosaic complex management, Part 2

In recent years, Leonard Kaiser has visited with many farmers and ranchers, along with those who interact with them, offering information about mental health and suicide risks.

As community liaison at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway, Kaiser is now intensifying those efforts.

“We are working more closely with Kansas Ag Stress and AgriSafe,” explained Kaiser, a licensed clinical professional counselor. “The resources they provide focus on education for those who work in agriculture.”

For example, Kansas Ag Stress notes that farmers and ranchers are the backbone of the state, providing crops, livestock and dairy products.

“Unfortunately, the stress that comes with these responsibilities can be overwhelming,” its website states. “Unpredictable weather, heavy workloads and financial worries can sometimes take their toll … and lead to mental and emotional distress, substance abuse, anxiety, depression and even suicide.”

AgriSafe, which offers a helpline and live chats, is trying to replicate a program that is showing promise in Europe.

“This program is modeled on the substitute-teacher system,” Kaiser commented. “If a farmer is facing surgery or serious illness, volunteers handle things on the farm until the owner has recovered.”

Local presentations Kaiser, who has a farming background, is available to any group interested in learning more about mental health on the farm. His presentations last about an hour.

“However, I was invited to speak at a coop meeting and covered the basics in about 15 minutes,” Kaiser recalled. “We just want to get the word out to anyone who wants to hear it.

“This is really important for family and friends who see the farmer on a regular basis. When they are concerned about their loved one, we can help identify certain behaviors to watch for.” (See sidebar story.)

Mental-health discussions are especially important now that the average age of a farmer is 58. “And the next generation isn’t taking over the family farm,” Kaiser noted. “Some sell the land to cover debt, while others lease their ground.

“Either way, they look at themselves as the generation that lost the family farm. With all the uncertainty and costs to produce a crop, they get to the point where they say ‘I just can’t do this anymore.’”

Kaiser realizes that farmers oftentimes don’t want to meet a counselor in person. “If this is the case, they can use telehealth services at home or even in the tractor.”

He said The Center is fortunate in that coops and other ag-related entities are open to his efforts to provide education and resources.

“Five years ago, the response might have been different. Now, I hear that people are absolutely open to talk about this. The stigma is still there but it is getting much better.”

Jeff Mauler, American Plains Coop chief operations officer, agreed that “more farmers are open to these discussions today because there is more awareness. Some farmers might feel like a failure and they have no control over anything. The pressure stacks up.

“And sometimes the signs of mental-health issues go undetected because farmers can mask it pretty well. After all, they are the big, tough guys that can handle anything.”

The importance of raising awareness and reducing the stigma is being demonstrated locally more than it used to. “For instance, I know of an informal network of farmers who make it a point to check in on friends and neighbors who they worry might be struggling,” Mauler noted. “It could be a phone call or visit – just to say ‘how ya doing.’”

Kaiser asked if Mauler would display posters and brochures that encourage people to seek advice or dial 988, the national suicide hotline. Mauler didn’t hesitate; these resources are at American Plains’ 15 locations now.

Mauler acknowledged that he was skeptical about the seriousness of mental-health concerns a few years ago. “Then Leonard and The Center came to us with information. They brought these issues to the forefront and we appreciate it.”

 </figure>In recent years, Leonard Kaiser has visited with many farmers and ranchers, along with those who interact with them, offering information about mental health and suicide risks.As community liaison at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway, Kaiser is now intensifying those efforts.“We are working more closely with Kansas Ag Stress and AgriSafe,” explained Kaiser, a licensed clinical professional counselor. “The resources they provide focus on education for those who work in agriculture.”For example, Kansas Ag Stress notes that farmers and ranchers are the backbone of the state, providing crops, livestock and dairy products.“Unfortunately, the stress that comes with these responsibilities can be overwhelming,” its website states. “Unpredictable weather, heavy workloads and financial worries can sometimes take their toll … and lead to mental and emotional distress, substance abuse, anxiety, depression and even suicide.”<figure>

 </figure>AgriSafe, which offers a helpline and live chats, is trying to replicate a program that is showing promise in Europe.“This program is modeled on the substitute-teacher system,” Kaiser commented. “If a farmer is facing surgery or serious illness, volunteers handle things on the farm until the owner has recovered.”Local presentations Kaiser, who has a farming background, is available to any group interested in learning more about mental health on the farm. His presentations last about an hour.“However, I was invited to speak at a coop meeting and covered the basics in about 15 minutes,” Kaiser recalled. “We just want to get the word out to anyone who wants to hear it.“This is really important for family and friends who see the farmer on a regular basis. When they are concerned about their loved one, we can help identify certain behaviors to watch for.” (See sidebar story.)Mental-health discussions are especially important now that the average age of a farmer is 58. “And the next generation isn’t taking over the family farm,” Kaiser noted. “Some sell the land to cover debt, while others lease their ground.“Either way, they look at themselves as the generation that lost the family farm. With all the uncertainty and costs to produce a crop, they get to the point where they say ‘I just can’t do this anymore.’”Kaiser realizes that farmers oftentimes don’t want to meet a counselor in person. “If this is the case, they can use telehealth services at home or even in the tractor.”He said The Center is fortunate in that coops and other ag-related entities are open to his efforts to provide education and resources.“Five years ago, the response might have been different. Now, I hear that people are absolutely open to talk about this. The stigma is still there but it is getting much better.”Jeff Mauler, American Plains Coop chief operations officer, agreed that “more farmers are open to these discussions today because there is more awareness. Some farmers might feel like a failure and they have no control over anything. The pressure stacks up.“And sometimes the signs of mental-health issues go undetected because farmers can mask it pretty well. After all, they are the big, tough guys that can handle anything.”The importance of raising awareness and reducing the stigma is being demonstrated locally more than it used to. “For instance, I know of an informal network of farmers who make it a point to check in on friends and neighbors who they worry might be struggling,” Mauler noted. “It could be a phone call or visit – just to say ‘how ya doing.’”Kaiser asked if Mauler would display posters and brochures that encourage people to seek advice or dial 988, the national suicide hotline. Mauler didn’t hesitate; these resources are at American Plains’ 15 locations now.Mauler acknowledged that he was skeptical about the seriousness of mental-health concerns a few years ago. “Then Leonard and The Center came to us with information. Barton County Sheriff's Booking activity (7/23)

The World Series. The Stanley Cup Playoffs. The NBA Finals. And now, the Eldridge Fencing Jingle Showdown. Game Seven is one of the most exciting nights in any professional sport. This Saturday is Game Seven for Eldridge Fencing in Great Bend. After six weeks of fan voting for the best jingle, owners Wally and Billy Eldridge are tied at three apiece. The stakes: a lucky voter will win a Napoleon 22-inch professional kettle grill during a live Eagle broadcast Monday night.

"I realized how important radio advertising is after we've done this," Wally said. "You wouldn't believe, just around town talking, I can't go in the grocery store without somebody asking me about the jingle."

Last March, Eldridge Fencing, 80 10th Street on the east edge of Great Bend, celebrated 30 years of service to the community. For most of those three decades, Wally relied on a professional singing group out of Branson, Mo., to provide the radio jingles. About five years ago, Eagle Media's Shannon Towns suggested Wally give the jingle a try.

"A while back, Billy had to do a commercial because I was on vacation," Wally said. "I got a thousand texts, emails, and phone calls about Billy being better than me, so I said, 'Okay, it's on.'"

Seven weeks ago, the Eldridge Fencing Jingle Showdown was born. Each participant cuts a new radio ad each week. Voters can stop by the store each week and vote on their favorite. Wally or Billy - whoever pulls in the most votes that week - then gets to pick the winner of a gift basket loaded with Eldridge Fencing goodies. Every person who has cast a vote will be eligible to win the Napoleon grill on July 28.

The contest has grown each week. Wally's ads have featured the likes of Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark and even Elvis. Billy's ads have featured singers Logan Mize and Jadynce Jean. Then there's Cooper, Billy's son, who seems to be easily swayed into voting for either daddy or papaw. He was recently persuaded by a candy bar to vote for Wally, but only after some creative editing in the studio.

Hoping for a week seven to bust out the big guns, Billy's bid to bring in Voice of the Kansas City Chiefs and Smith Center-native Mitch Holthus came up a little bit short.

"I just couldn't get ahold of him," said Billy. "I figured I'd be able to get ahold of him with him being from Kansas."

Now, the final jingles have been cut. Voters have until Monday, July 28 to stop by Eldridge Fencing to vote for the week seven winner. This one will decide all the marbles. While the final vote will bring the joy of winning or the agony of defeat, the whole ride has been a learning lesson for a local business.

"We definitely understand a little bit more about how many people listen to the radio and the different stations as well," Billy said.

Eldridge Fencing Jingle Showdown wraps with live giveaway on July 28

Fourteen young people under the supervision of Juvenile Services (JS) recently used their time and talents to create artwork and positive messages, while having a little fun at the same time.

The group participated in the Kindness Rocks Project as part of the JS Life Skills program.

Kindness Rocks offers the opportunity to paint rocks with uplifting messages or artistic designs, and leaving them in public places so others can enjoy them.

“We always hope the rocks find their way to the right people at the right time,” said Laura Mason, JS community case manager.

Participants, who range in age from 11 to 18, “are a great group of young people,” Mason commented. “Morale was very positive, and the painters enjoyed good conversations with one another.

“One participant approached me, asking if we would have another Kindness Rocks session soon. She also mentioned that ‘I had so much fun; everyone was nice to me. I actually met new friends.’”

Mason hopes to schedule another session for the near future.

Messages depicted on the rocks included: be kind; you rock; treat others how you want to be treated; God loves you; and love yourself.

The rocks were donated by a local business and two young people picked out the ones to use for Kindness Rocks. They earned some community-service hours for their initiative.

Another JS client washed the rocks in preparation for the event, also earning community-service hours.

Life Skills sessions are generally scheduled for once a month. Upcoming classes are CPR, first aid and financial literacy.

“Anyone who wants to volunteer their time and skills to benefit our youth is encouraged to contact us,” Mason said. “These programs not only benefit the young people today but also in the future.”

Juvenile Services clients enjoy Kindness Rocks event as part of Life Skills classes

On July 22, 2025, the Barton County Sheriff’s office received information from the Kansas Department of Corrections EAI unit, that a quantity of drugs would be entering Barton County on K-156 Highway sometime during the day. The Department of Corrections was able to provide suspect information as well as a vehicle description and tag number. Deputies and detectives were positioned in a number of locations in northeastern Barton County to intercept the vehicle. Just after 4 p.m., sheriff’s deputies observed the vehicle enter Barton County. It was known to the Barton County Sheriff's Office that the occupants were wanted for parole violations on an A&amp;D warrant.

A felony traffic stop was conducted and the subjects were removed from the vehicle and taken into custody without incident. The Sheriff’s Office K9 indicated the presence of controlled substances inside the 2008 Ford Taurus. Further investigation revealed a quantity of cocaine, methamphetamine and synthetic cannabinoids. Two handguns were also located in the vehicle.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as Jerry Wayne Smith, Jr., 43, of Salina, and Christopher Lee Smith, 21,&nbsp; of Abilene. Jerry is Christopher's father. Both were transported to the Barton County Jail where they were booked on requested charges of possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine, criminal use of a firearm as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. Both individuals had outstanding warrants from the Kansas Department of Corrections for parole violation. The drug charges carry a $100,000 bond. The warrants for parole violation have no bond. The Sheriff’s office was assisted in this operation by detectives from the Great Bend Police Department.

Tips from KDOC result in pair of drug, gun arrests in Barton County

The short answer is the Great Bend City Council needs more money to do more. Monday evening, the body approved funding for the 2025 Asphalt Resurfacing Project. With a price tag of just over $1 million, Councilman Gary Parr was hoping for a larger scope of work.

"Is this like phase one, because there are a lot more streets besides these that are in dire need of repair," Parr said. "So is this just the beginning of what we are going to start doing?"

Councilmen Alan Moeder and Cory Urban explained that the project is funded through the quarter-cent sales tax, and there is a cap on the amount of work that can be done with that amount of money.

Assistant City Engineer Hitha Kadiyala said the 2025 project will include a 2-inch mill and overlay, pavement markings, and manhole adjustments. A base bid included repairs on Broadway Ave. from Patton Road to K-96 Highway; on 24th Street from Harrison to Washington Ave., on 19th Street from Washington Ave. to Morton Street; and on Morton from 19th to 21st Streets.

"The intent for this resurfacing project is to get a high-volume street like 24th Street done, as well as prioritizing the residential streets like Broadway and 19th Street," she said. " Since the base bid already has 24th and Harrison and Washington in the limits, since they're a block away, I think it's a good time to go ahead and do the 24th and McKinley intersection as well. It's in bad shape."

The council approved an alternate bid to include work at the 24th and McKinley intersection. Venture Corporation was the lone bid for the work. Work is expected to begin later this week and be completed before the start of the school year. The total price tag is $1,017,213.

A base bid included repairs on Broadway Ave. from Patton Road to K-96 Highway; on 24th Street from Harrison to Washington Ave., on 19th Street from Washington Ave. to Morton Street; and on Morton from 19th to 21st Streets."The intent for this resurfacing project is to get a high-volume street like 24th Street done, as well as prioritizing the residential streets like Broadway and 19th Street," she said. " Since the base bid already has 24th and Harrison and Washington in the limits, since they're a block away, I think it's a good time to go ahead and do the 24th and McKinley intersection as well. It's in bad shape."The council approved an alternate bid to include work at the 24th and McKinley intersection. Venture Corporation was the lone bid for the work. Work is expected to begin later this week and be completed before the start of the school year. The total price tag is $1,017,213.

19th and Morton, 24th Street next up for street repair in Great Bend

Whether they’ve married into an operation, desire a career in beef production systems, or are trying to start their own herd from scratch, women often find themselves expected to help manage livestock without ever having been taught how. That gap in access to training and support is what Cow Camp 2025 aims to close.

Cow Camp 2025, a hands-on educational experience for women in beef production, will be held Sept. 10–11 at the Kansas State University’s Agricultural Research Center in Hays. The program is designed to help women build practical skills in cattle management, grow their confidence, and take a stronger role in the workforce shaping the future of Kansas agriculture.

“This is workforce development in the most grounded, impactful way,” said Sandy Johnson, K-State Research and Extension beef specialist. “We’re meeting women where they are and equipping them with the tools, they need to succeed in an industry that depends on smart decisions and shared leadership.”

Cow Camp offers workshops on body condition scoring, calving preparation and simulator training, expected progeny differences (EPDs), vaccine handling, forage sampling, pasture monitoring and more. The program is tailored for women who are managing a first herd, helping with a family operation, or entering the industry from the ground up.“

This event is about capacity building,” said Emma Briggs, KSRE beef production specialist. “It’s about giving women the skills, support and access to research-based information they need to contribute meaningfully to their operations and the broader beef industry. That’s what the land-grant mission is all about—bringing the university to the people and investing in rural communities.”

As the cattle industry evolves, more women are stepping into decision-making roles on farms and ranches. Yet many report limited access to training and peer support—particularly in rural areas. Cow Camp addresses that gap through a supportive, no-pressure environment where participants can ask questions, try new techniques and connect with others facing similar challenges.

“We’re not just teaching skills—we’re building confidence and community,” Johnson said. “And that’s what keeps women in agriculture long term.”

K-State Research and Extension developed Cow Camp in response to growing demand for educational opportunities that reflect the realities of western Kansas agriculture. The program supports both beginning and experienced producers and reinforces the university’s commitment to practical, inclusive outreach as part of its land-grant heritage.

The event is limited to 40 participants. Registration is $75 and includes meals, materials and all workshop sessions.

Officers with the Great Bend Police Department continue to make a difference through various outreach programs in the community. Spots are filling up for the popular Cast with a Cop event scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 6 at Veterans Memorial Park.

Registration began Monday this week and will close Friday. Interested parties may register at the Great Bend Police Department, 1121 Baker Avenue, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no registration fee.

Participants must be between the ages of 8 and 14. Only 30 spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Cast with a Cop will run from 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 6, with a free lunch provided. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will provide loaner fishing poles and bait, which will also be provided on a first-come, first-serve basis. Participants may also bring their own gear. Pickup and drop-off for the event will be on the south side of Veterans Lake.

The Barton County Landfill is encouraging residents to use its household hazardous waste (HHW) and recycling programs to extend the landfill's life, protect the environment, and ensure public safety. Solid Waste Director Jennifer Hamby detailed initiatives to divert hazardous and recyclable materials when she addressed the County Commission Tuesday morning.

“Recycling is crucial for our community and our landfill,” Hamby said. “It’s important for us to work together to recycle as much as possible.”

The landfill diverts waste and other items from the disposal stream, she said. “In addition to extending the life of the landfill, some recycled items can be reused by the public and the environment is better protected through this simple act of activism.”

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Program The HHW program serves Barton, Pawnee and Ellsworth County residents at no cost; no commercial waste is accepted. And, Hamby said, since 2003, the HHW program has diverted 750,000 pounds of hazardous waste from the landfill.

Residents can bring paints, paint finishing products, garden/pest control products, automotive cleaners, household/cleaning products, batteries, and outdated/unused medications, she said.

Collections are every third Saturday from April to October. Year-round weekday appointments are available for those unable to attend scheduled events. Call for appointments or questions about acceptable items.

The landfill also offers free household cleaners, paint, and automotive cleaners through a reuse program by appointment.

Lithium-ion battery dangers “Each type of battery poses its own risk to the environment,” she said. Lead Acids contain lead and sulfuric acid, nickel-cadmiums have cadmium, and akalines include manganese, steel and zinc.

But lithium-ion batteries present the most danger, she said.

Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries, found in smartphones, smartwatches, power tools, and other devices, is a significant landfill concern, Hamby said.

"Placing lithium-ion batteries and battery-containing devices in the trash poses a significant risk to landfill employees, firefighters, trash collectors, and the public," she said. "Punctured or damaged lithium batteries can erupt or ignite, causing fires and injuries. Do not smash or damage phones or any lithium battery-containing device with the battery still in it. Battery fires can reignite up to a week later."

She stressed that the landfill staff is happy to remove the batteries for patrons. Then, the patrons can destroy the devices if they have security concerns.

To mitigate fires, the landfill acquired a 1996 Ford F-350 brush truck in August 2024 from the City of Wilson, replacing a 1969 Chevy Fire Truck it bought in 2021 from Claflin and donated to the Barton County Historical Society.

The new vehicle is four-wheel drive and allows easier access to the facility’s rough terrain.

In addition, a thermal camera detects excess heat at the disposal site, alerting the solid waste director and aiding decisions on contacting the fire department.

Recycling efforts Recycling is crucial for environmental protection and landfill longevity, minimizing waste, conserving resources, and reducing pollution, Hamby said.

· Mattresses: Since 2011, the landfill has sent mattresses to Hutchinson Correctional Facility, where inmates in the Hope Project disassemble them for recycling. Components are reused for outdoor furniture, pet houses, and other wood and foam products that are for sale to the public.

Approximately 503 tons (1,006,000 pounds) of mattresses have been recycled.

· Tires: About 100 tons (200,000 pounds) of waste tires are recycled annually, processed into livestock feed bunks, benches, picnic tables, and silage storage. These go to a company in Concordia which also sells the items publicly.

· Metal: Since 2008, 606 tons (1,212,000 pounds) of metal have been diverted.

· E-Waste: The e-waste recycling program, started in 2009, has recycled approximately 350 tons (700,000 pounds) of electronics. E-waste goes to Rosewood E-cycle in Great Bend for disassembly and further recycling.

Public reminders Hamby also issued a couple reminders to the public:

· Wind Closure: Due to strong winds, the landfill may close to customers if sustained winds exceed 30 mph, gusts exceed 35 mph, if 40 mph or above winds are forecasted, or if a National Weather Service "high wind" warning is issued. Call ahead on windy days to confirm operating status.

· Secure Load Policy: All vehicles must have properly secured loads (tarps, ropes) to prevent material escape. Unsecured loads that drop or leak material may incur an additional charge of up to 50% of the disposal fee, as they create litter and motorist hazards.

Both of these policies help prevent littering, but they are also in place due to safety reasons since blown or lost items can be traffic hazards. And, both are set by county resolutions and state statutes.

Barton Co. landfill urges residents to use recycling, hazardous waste programs

Elvis Presley died on Aug. 16, 1977, at his Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tenn., at the age of 42. But his music and legacy live on, in part, thanks to countless Elvis impersonators around the world. Not all of those impersonators are created equal. This Saturday, July 26, one of the world's best impersonators will perform many of Elvis's hits at the Crest Theater in downtown Great Bend. Nebraska-native Joseph Hall, born seven years after Presley's death, said it all began with his dad's taste in music.

"Growing up, Elvis was always in the house and always in the minivan," he said. "I heard Elvis before I saw Elvis. I think, right away, I was attracted to his vocals and attracted to the sound. When I saw him, I just absolutely fell in love with him. It wasn't until I was about 21 years old where my love for Elvis was reignited. Dad took me to Las Vegas and I saw my first professional Elvis show. The gentleman that night, he was just absolutely amazing. I kind of came home with this fever for Elvis Presley."

Hall dressed up as Elvis that year and performed some songs. A local bar owner invited him to perform as Elvis and his act was born. Hall was still doing Elvis part-time in 2007 when his dad told him about a show in Chicago. That life-changing show turned out to be an audition for NBC's "America's Got Talent."

"I didn't realize it was the actual audition for 'America's Got Talent,'" Hall said. "I think if I would have known it was for 'America's Got Talent,' I probably wouldn't have gone."

Hall did go, making the top-10 in the show. His performances from the program have been viewed more than 90 million times. His success on national television allowed him to make Elvis a full-time act with 90-100 performances each year.

 </figure>Elvis has been a mainstay in American culture since making his debut on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in 1956. But his name reached a new audience in 2022 with a feature film starring Austin Butler as Elvis and Tom Hanks as the divisive Colonel Tom Parker."It sort of sparked a whole new fanbase for me, which is pretty awesome," Hall said. "Now, you come to the shows and there's a newer, younger audience. They bring a sense of energy to the show. Their curiosity for Elvis, it's pretty awesome."The versatile Hall can perform with or without a band. He plays a lot of smaller venues without space for a band, including the Crest, which will feature instrumental tracks."It's just about logistics and what the venue wants," he said. "A lot of the tracks I will play have been recorded by my band, so it's a great sound."The Great Bend stop, titled "Return to Vegas," will focus on Elvis's 55th anniversary of playing Las Vegas.
