Countless times in recent years, Adriana Arias safely jogged a familiar route from her home in northwest Great Bend that included a jaunt down McKinley Street. That was not the case on Saturday, Aug. 16, when Arias was struck by a vehicle just after 6 a.m. in the 2200 block of McKinley. Her husband, Jose Enriquez, announced Wednesday that Adriana would be released from a Wichita hospital that day. Jessica Herrera, Adriana's sister-in-law, said the road to recovery has been a painful one.

"She did have to, unfortunately, bear a lot of the pain without any type of medication because they did not want to alter the brain activity," Herrera said. "If something were to change, they wouldn't know if it was the brain or the medication. She's very strong. They've had her try to get up and use the restroom by herself, but she is on a walker. We're hoping for her to recover soon and get out, but it's ultimately up to her body."

The 40-year-old Arias is a mother of three and a lab technician at the University of Kansas Health System - Great Bend Campus. She suffered multiple injuries in Saturday's accident, including a laceration on her head that resulted in hemorrhaging and required staples. Doctors found a dislocated bone in her right hand, and the accident tore Arias' shoes and a sock from her feet.

"As of right now, the point of impact seems to be her hip and the back part of her left leg," said Herrera. "She has lacerations from head to toe. She has black eyes. She has bruises on her forehead.

"They did mention that, because she's so athletic, because she takes protein and all that, it does help her body heal a lot faster. They did mention the muscle protected a lot of the bones. Thankfully, she wasn't broken. Their belief is because she has good muscle, she avoided broken bones."

Arias was Lifewatched to Wichita shortly after the accident. Herrera knows few details about the driver involved in the accident, but can confirm it was not an on-duty or off-duty police officer, and it was not a hit-and-run.

"We know very little," she said. "We haven't really asked or engaged in anything. We're being respectful. Honestly, we don't know the story of the other party. We just know (Adriana is) pretty hurt."

"A lot of people run up and down Vets Park," Herrera said. "I know a lot of children walk home from school. It's kind of scary at this point, just because I know she wouldn't have been in the middle of the street. It's beyond belief that she was exercising and this tragedy happened. Thankfully, it didn't get too, too serious, but it is definitely something scary to think about, especially for those of us who have children."

Adriana's family is thankful for community support thus far. Friends and neighbors have stepped in to help. Adriana's two oldest children have stepped up to care for the third sibling, who attends elementary school in Great Bend.

Accidents are expensive, regardless of who is at fault. Arias has health insurance, but already the medical expenses are piling up. The family incurred accommodation costs while they stayed near Arias in Wichita. Both Adriana and her husband work in Great Bend. Neither is currently able to work until Adriana can return home. The family is accepting financial donations.

HODGEMAN COUNTY—Three people were injured in an accident just before 3:30p.m. Wednesday in Hodgeman County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2013 Kenworth semi driven by Michael L.&nbsp;Burke, 76, Hanston, was westbound on T Road at 231 Road two and one half miles north of Kansas 156.

The driver failed to yield to a southbound 2007 Dodge Dakota driven by&nbsp; Wyatt A. Thompson, 16, Hanston. The two vehicles collided in the intersections.&nbsp;

EMS transported&nbsp;Thompson and passengers William H. Thompson, 13, Hanston to the Hodgeman County Health Center and Annabeth M. Thompson, 9, Hanston to the hospital in Larned.&nbsp; Burke was not injured. The passengers in the pickup were not wearing seat belts, according to the KHP.

3 Kansas juveniles injured after pickup, semi crash

The Barton Community College Theatre Department will hold auditions for its fall production “Time Stands Still,” by Donald Marguiles, at 6 p.m. Aug. 26-27 in the Fine Arts auditorium, and all roles and technical positions will be cast.

The cast will include two male and two female characters in their 20s or 30s. The auditions will consist of cold readings, and no monologues are needed. The play is about a photojournalist who returns home from covering a war and must deal with her transition back to domestic life.

Cereal rye can provide excellent weed suppression as a cover crop; however, it should be handled carefully. Cereal rye can be introduced into a wheat field by contamination of harvest or seed conditioning equipment, dry fertilizer spreaders, or drills. Seeds and pollen can also be moved by wind or other natural means.

Cereal rye is very similar to wheat in terms of life cycle, growth requirements, and appearance. There are a few features that distinguish rye from wheat:

· Plant height: Cereal rye is generally taller than winter wheat.

· Seed heads: Rye seed heads are usually longer and thinner.

· Ligule: The ligule of cereal rye lacks the fringe of hairs that winter wheat has.

· Auricles: Cereal rye does not have prominent auricles, unlike winter wheat.

· Seed characteristics: Rye seeds are longer than wheat seeds and typically have a yellow or greenish shade, rather than red.

These differences can help with identifying cereal rye in the field.

Chemical control of cereal rye in wheat is limited to herbicide-tolerant varieties (discussed later in this article). Because there are few herbicide options in crops, preventing the introduction of cereal rye into wheat fields is critical. Cleaning equipment and planting weed-free seed are two important measures. Hand rouging has long been used to remove cereal rye from wheat prior to harvest. Crop rotation is also important for controlling cereal rye and other winter annual grass weeds. Cereal rye emerging during a fallow phase of the rotation can be controlled with glyphosate. If cereal rye is present in wheat stubble, atrazine can be used if the following crop will be corn or sorghum.

Herbicide-tolerant wheat varieties Clearfield wheat varieties allow the use of Beyond (imazamox). Imazamox is more effective on other cool-season grass weeds and only provides suppression of cereal rye. If you choose a Clearfield variety, be sure to spray before rye tillers and use a nitrogen fertilizer (up to 50% of the spray solution). Two applications (4 fl oz in the fall and 4 fl oz in the spring) will provide better control than a single application. If a single application is used, apply Beyond at the maximum single-use rate of 6 fl oz. However, it is important to note that imazamox resistance has been confirmed in cereal rye from Colorado.

CoAXium wheat varieties allow the use of Aggressor (quizalofop). Quizalofop provides excellent control of cereal rye. In studies at Great Bend, control was 94% or greater with 10 or 12 fl oz of Aggressor applied with either NIS or MSO in fall or spring. Quizalofop is a Group 1 herbicide that only controls grasses.

In both systems, cereal rye control will be reduced if applications are made when temperatures are below 40°F during the week following application.

CAMPBELL: Cereal rye control in wheat should be handled carefully

Last year, the city of Great Bend collected $5.89 million in ad valorem, or property taxes, to fund its 2025 budget. During Monday night's meeting, the Great Bend City Council voted 6-0 to approve the 2026 budget for exactly the same number of dollars. City Clerk and Finance Director Shawna Schafer presented the matter to the board.

"On July 14, City Administrator Logan Burns presented our recommended 2026 budget," she said. "This budget is funded at a mill levy of 41.357, which is the calculated revenue-neutral rate that is certified by the county clerk. As you remember, last year, Senate Bill 410 was approved, which basically states that if your intent is to levy the same amount of taxes as the prior year, you don't have to hold the RNR hearing just to secure your dollars."

If the final property valuations exceed or come in under estimates, the city's budget will not be impacted. With rising property values, the city had to drop its mill levy from 44.651 a year ago to 41.357 this year to remain revenue neutral.

In-person attendance is required at all orientation day sessions for students to attend actual classes. BCC to host adult education classes in downtown Great Bend

Culminating a months-long process of review and public input and following a public hearing, the Barton County Commission Tuesday morning formally adopted its 2026 operating budget that, for the fifth year in a row, stayed under the state-mandated revenue-neutral rate.

The budget, which was published in the&nbsp;Great Bend Tribune&nbsp;on Aug. 9, calls for a mill levy of 33.921, a reduction of 1.898 mills from the previous year. This rate is slightly below the county’s revenue-neutral rate of 33.925.

“Every budget year is unique and presents its own challenges,” County Administrator Matt Patzner said in his 2026 budget message to the commission. “This year was no different as the commissioners had to find a way to accomplish all of these goals with continuing rising costs for commodities, services and quality personnel with fewer Ad Valorem tax dollars than the year before.”

“I would just also want to thank you for all your hard work on this,” District 5 Commissioner Donna Zimmerman said. “I know, as we've stayed under the revenue-neutral rate, and things have been slimmer to fund, harder to fund, and that makes the budget even more difficult.”

The new budget will generate a total of $11,941,414 in ad valorem tax dollars, which is $18,407 less than the amount generated for the 2025 budget. One mill represents one dollar of tax for every $1,000 of a property's assessed value.

Patzner said the budget's primary goals were to remain revenue-neutral, maintain quality public services, invest in county employees and contribute to the expansion of the tax base.

The RNR dates back to the Kansas Legislature's 2021 Truth in Taxation Act. The overall budget authority for all funds is up by $820,305 from 2025. This increase is primarily due to rising personnel and insurance costs, as well as increased funding for road and bridge maintenance, community development and outside agencies.&nbsp;Patzner said the county was able to absorb the increase by beginning the year with a higher cash carryforward and increased revenue from sources other than ad valorem tax, such as sales tax and departmental revenue.

Ad valorem tax makes up less than half of the total revenue needed for the county’s balanced budget. Other major funding sources include cash carryforward, motor vehicle tax, sales and use tax, and various fees and grants.

“The percentage of funding needed from Ad Valorem tax revenue for a balanced budget is down 2% compared to 2025’s budget,” he said. “As with all budgets, the goal is to maintain quality public services while trying to keep this Ad Valorem Tax number as small as possible to be good stewards of the taxpayer’s money.”

The property tax dollars are distributed to taxing entities throughout the county, Patzner said. “Depending on where you live, only 18-22% of your property tax dollars support Barton County government.”

Over the past five years, Patzner said the mill rate has decreased over 12 mills and there has been a $284,000 decrease in the total tax dollars collected. And, this may be the first time that property taxes made up less than half (coming in at 49%) of the county’s spending package.

“That really illustrates that we are controlling what we can control,” he said. This is their goal every year going into the budgeting process.

“This has been one of the best experiences of my life,” District 3 Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson said of his time working on budgets while on the board. “We really are here to serve you, and what we're trying to do is grow our tax base so that everybody's piece of the pie is a little&nbsp;bit smaller.”

“As future budget years present themselves, they will bring with them unique challenges. I believe that with adequate cash reserves, zero debt, and careful planning, the county can address these challenges in a sustainable way as they come forward,” Patzner said. “With the leadership of the County Commissioners, the diligence and care of our department heads, and the high quality of our employees, Barton County remains fiscally sound and is in the position to maintain a sustainable mill levy for years to come while contributing to the expansion of our tax base and continuing to provide quality public services.”

“We couldn't do this, the five of us, without everybody else that works for the county,” said Commission Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger, District 4. 

“Every day we ask them to lean up and do more with less, with rising costs, and to have a decreasing budget. That is pretty phenomenal.”

The county has cut 11 positions over the past five years. But, this year’s budget includes a 50-cent raise for all employees.

With the adoption finalized, the budget will now be delivered to the County Clerk’s Office to meet statutory deadlines.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 </figure>By DALE HOGG Barton County Media ConsultantCulminating a months-long process of review and public input and following a public hearing, the Barton County Commission Tuesday morning formally adopted its 2026 operating budget that, for the fifth year in a row, stayed under the state-mandated revenue-neutral rate.The budget, which was published in the&nbsp;Great Bend Tribune&nbsp;on Aug. 9, calls for a mill levy of 33.921, a reduction of 1.898 mills from the previous year. This rate is slightly below the county’s revenue-neutral rate of 33.925.“Every budget year is unique and presents its own challenges,” County Administrator Matt Patzner said in his 2026 budget message to the commission. “This year was no different as the commissioners had to find a way to accomplish all of these goals with continuing rising costs for commodities, services and quality personnel with fewer Ad Valorem tax dollars than the year before.”“I would just also want to thank you for all your hard work on this,” District 5 Commissioner Donna Zimmerman said. “I know, as we've stayed under the revenue-neutral rate, and things have been slimmer to fund, harder to fund, and that makes the budget even more difficult.”The new budget will generate a total of $11,941,414 in ad valorem tax dollars, which is $18,407 less than the amount generated for the 2025 budget. There were a few changes to Great Bend's 2025 Party in the Park, most notably the absence of fireworks during Saturday night's concerts at Veterans Memorial Park. But Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis said this year's version was still successful in a presentation to the Great Bend City Council Monday night.

"We had 35 vendors. A lot of our food trucks that were out there reported back that they sold out of food, so that is a good problem to have for them. The Kids Zone is always a hit. The caricature artist, she got back to me. She did over 200 faces in the four hours she was there. She said her hand didn't stop; she just kept drawing for four hours."

The day opened with the Great Bend Rec's Oozefest Mud Volleyball tournament, in which 28 teams competed. Fifty-one vehicles were present for the car show, though Gaddis said that number likely suffered from a competing event in Bazine the same day. Twenty-three teams competed in the cornhole tournament, and nearly 600 attended the evening's concerts.

"We did have our recap meeting, and we have a lot of fresh ideas and new ideas for next year, so we're already planning for that," Gaddis said.

Gaddis thanked the council and city employees who helped make 2025 Party in the Park possible.

A special exhibit, Life in the Trenches, from the Smoky Hill Museum is now on display at Hoisington Public Library, 169 S. Walnut, from Sept. 3 to Oct. 29. The exhibit explores the human face of World War I and the miserable nature of trench warfare.

WWI is known as the Great War and the ‘war to end all wars.’ America joined the fray in 1917. Out of more than two million Americans who served in World War I, and more than 80,000 were from Kansas. This unique exhibit focuses on the harrowing experiences of Kansas soldiers by using vivid, first-hand accounts of their ordeals, trials, and tribulations. Visitors learn the reasoning behind using trenches in the war; what the trenches looked like; and what life was like in the trenches.

There are also three interactive elements in the display including:

· Vet Vignettes – With information and accounts of Kansas, American, Allied, and Central Power troops in a simple to navigate touch-screen format.

· Gas Attack – Where users are challenged to respond quickly and prepare themselves for a gas attack before it is too late.

· Not Five Star Food – Which explores a WWI era mess kit and the recipes they might have used on the battlefield.

A very special thanks goes to the Earl Bane Foundation, City of Salina Kansas, and the Friends of the Smoky Hill Museum for helping make this exhibit possible. ‘Life in the Trenches Exhibit’ on display at Hoisington Public Library

As we move into the latter part of the growing season, it is time to consider late summer and fall pests as well as your plans for next year. Both stable and horn fly populations tend to decline over the dry, hot part of summer but can resurge in late summer into fall if sufficient rainfall occurs. 

Horn flies are found on the back and belly of the animals and stay constantly associated with the cattle host making topical insecticides (pour-ons, sprays and ear tags) effective control methods, with appropriate rotation. Stable flies in contrast feed preferentially on the legs of the animal for a short period of time (2-4 minutes), 1-2 times a day. This low contact time with the host makes chemical control difficult to achieve. Decaying hay and plant material are a primary breeding for stable flies, pay special attention to hay bale and feed wastage and surrounding crop fields.

House fly populations will continue to increase through the summer and can be a significant problem for feedlots and dairies. Minimize feed wastage spilled over bunkers and keep pens well scraped, paying special attention to areas around feed bunkers, water stations and under fence lines. Baits and traps can be useful against house flies, make sure the traps are placed away from buildings such as offices as they will attract flies to the location. 

Fall can also see face flies trying to enter barns and buildings for a place to overwinter. Sealing off cracks and crevices can remove these overwintering spots. If a second fall fly population boom occurs, any early season on-animal interventions applied are unlikely to still be effective this late in the season. If reapplying products within the same season, do not change insecticide group.

Larvae of the cattle grub should be treated in fall or early winter using oral medications or pour-ons. Treatment should not be carried out in January or February due to the potential for severe reactions. Lice populations also tend to thrive in cooler weather, watch out for patches of hair loss and rubbing, indicative of lice problems. Part the hair, especially along the neck and back of the animal and look for small cream insects about 1/16th of an inch. If large numbers of lice are observed, pour-on treatments can effectively treat lice infestation. Treatment must be repeated after two weeks to target any nits that were not killed after the first treatment.

BOOR: Now is the time to think about late summer, fall pests

A Lyons toddler is up for some big national recognition and he needs your help. Johnny Wood, 3, has made it as a top-10 finalist in the National Toddler of the Year contest sponsored by Toys for Tots and Hasbro. Online voting is free to the public and ends Aug. 21 at 7 p.m.

"Johnny was nominated for the Toddler of the Year contest after we saw it online and thought it would be a fun way to share his big personality and heart with others," said Johnny's mother, Sierra Sheridan. "He loves helping people, and this contest felt like the perfect fit to celebrate him."

Johnny is known around Lyons as a “wild child with a huge heart.” He loves helping his dad work on his classic 1970½ Camaro, fishing, and riding his electric dirt bike. Most of all, he has a gift for making people smile — always eager to help anyone who looks like they need a little sunshine in their life.

"Johnny has such a big heart for helping others, whether it’s working in the garage with his dad, picking up tools, or just being eager to help anyone who looks like they need a hand," Sheridan said. "He’s adventurous, full of energy, and has a kindness that shines through even at such a young age. Lyons 3-year-old a finalist in National Toddler of the Year contest

A Great Bend woman is recovering from serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle Saturday morning while jogging in the 2200 block of McKinley Street. The accident occurred at approximately 6:10 a.m., and the driver, who was traveling southbound, told police he did not see the woman prior to the accident, nor did he know where she came from.

With more pedestrian traffic on the streets with the start of the school year and the peak of summer, Great Bend Chief of Police Steve Haulmark reminds pedestrians and drivers to exercise caution.

"GBPD will be conducting routine patrols and monitoring the traffic flow during drop-off and pick-up times, and maintaining a visible presence to support the school’s protocols," he said. "This is part of our ongoing commitment to student safety and community partnership."

Haulmark further reminds drivers to stay alert and exercise extra caution on the roads. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, take their time, and pay attention to school speed limits.

"Young people may not be as aware of their surroundings as they should be," Haulmark said. "Also, we will have new and inexperienced drivers on the road who may be excited to get to school and see their friends, so please watch for these folks and give them some grace."

Haulmark also encourages parents to have a conversation about these topics with their children, especially new drivers, with an emphasis to focus on the road and not their phones. 

Visibility at night and in the morning is reduced, making it crucial for both drivers and pedestrians to be extra cautious.

"Drivers should reduce speed, stay alert for pedestrians, particularly in residential areas and around schools, or any other areas that might be poorly illuminated, and they should avoid distractions," said Haulmark.

Pedestrians should wear bright or reflective clothing, if possible, use crosswalks when available, and make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Safety depends on awareness from both sides.

Great Bend woman struck by vehicle: GBPD reminds pedestrians to stay safe

Eight teams competed in the recent Kick the Habit Kickball Tournament, which once again proved to be an educational and fun event for players and spectators alike, said Tyler Morton, Juvenile Services prevention advocate.

Barton County Youth Crew organized and participated in the games.

The winning eight-person team was the Kick Magnets, which defeated the Toe Jammers in the final round at the Great Bend Sports Complex.

“The goal was to have conversations about kicking bad habits,” Morton said. “This includes substance use but goes beyond that. While our primary focus is on alcohol, drugs and tobacco, we realize that bad habits in general can lead to difficulties in life.

“Therefore, we want to encourage people of all ages to reflect on their daily decisions to help improve their quality of life. Hosting this fun, free community event draws attention to Youth Crew and opens doors for discussions we may not otherwise have.”

Morton also noted that the 21 Youth Crew members who played kickball and/or volunteered to organize the event “did a great job with set-up and tear- down, and everything in between. Our planning committee, under the strong leadership of Jaci Sandberg, deserves much of the credit for the success.

“All of us appreciated a great turnout of up to 200 spectators. This is something we enjoy doing with our community.”

Morton also is grateful to Shane Sandberg at Great Bend Rec for helping with tournament logistics and to local businesses that donated raffle prizes.

“Rise Up Central Kansas provided the umpires and the Barton Community College men’s and women’s soccer teams and Coach Rafael Simmons added to the experience.

Barton County Youth Crew’s Kick the Habit Kickball tournament successful

For more than 100 years, the Barton County Farm Bureau Association has been holding its annual meeting to discuss the previous and future year in farming, and to honor those making a difference in agriculture across the county. Sunday, in its 106th annual meeting, the group met at Performance Crop Research in Great Bend. One of this year's honorees was 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's Steve Webster, who won the association's 2025 Agriculture Reporting Award.

"We know Steve well from our 5-year radio show stint where he hosted a majority of our episodes, " said Performance Crop Research Owner Melissa Nelson Baldwin in a social media post. "I cannot think of a man that embodies the principles of ag more; honesty, integrity, hard work, respect and love of this lifestyle. He has constant push for education and connection through radio, and we appreciate all he does for our community."

Webster is the usual host of the "South Bend Industrial Hemp Show" with the Baldwins, which airs monthly on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM.&nbsp;

During Sunday's meeting, the Association also recognized the Lanterman Family as its 2025 Sesquicentennial Farm Family. The Lanterman farm dates back to 1873 when Robert and Duane Lanterman's great-great-grandfather first acquired several acres in Barton County.

Austin and Nora Nokes were named 2025 Century Farm Honorees, and The Taff Hughes Family earned the 2025 Farm Family Award. Veronica Hughes was recognized with the Natural Resource Award, and Leonard Kaiser earned the Rural Minds Matter Advocate of the Year Award.

TOPEKA, KS — Lifelong Kansan Christy Cauble Davis has formally launched her campaign for the United States Senate. She will challenge incumbent Roger Marshall in a race that promises to offer voters a clear choice between issues that matter to Kansans and Washington performance politics.

For several years, the Sonic building on the south edge of Hoisington has remained largely vacant. In April 2021, a new business expressed interest in the facility but a chicken fast-food restaurant could not survive. City Administrator Jonathan Mitchell recently announced Yummy's Donut Palace is now working to open up shop in the building.

"We had the opportunity at the city to meet the owner of that business," he said. "They're working through all the regulatory side of things, getting their inspections done, licensing done."

The eatery will feature an expansive menu, including donuts, coffee, breakfast sandwiches and burritos, Boba tea, smoothies, and more. Drive-thru services will be available.

"It's really kind of exciting to see somebody coming to Hoisington and bringing their business to Hoisington," Mitchell said. "These folks here have several locations across the country. I think they have at least two in Missouri, one or two in Iowa. So this isn't their first rodeo."

The chain has several stores in operation near the Kansas City area, and another northwest of Des Moines, Iowa. No timeline was available for when the Hoisington store will open.
