Barton County commissioners were out on tour Tuesday afternoon as they launched their much-anticipated new Travel 389 initiative by visiting businesses and other sites in Hoisington.

The program, which aims to engage directly with residents and businesses across the county's 389 miles of roadways started in Hoisington with stops at Superior Essex Communications, Town and Country Supermarket, Brick and Bloom and Cates Auto Parts.

“We’re taking this show on the road. It’s pretty exciting,” said Commission Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger, District 4. “We hope to get some really good ideas.”

During the first stop at Essex, Commissioner Duane Reif, District 1, said they want a variety of input from county residents, “No business is too big or too small.”

Reif, who lives in Hoisington and helped arrange the visits, praised Essex and the community as a whole.

“We have good businesses, good schools, a good grocery store, a good hospital and a good recreation center,” he said. “We have a lot to offer.”

In addition, commissioners met with the City of Hoisington and concluded their day with a view of a county-owned property in South Hoisington at Pacific and Vine.

Schlessiger explained Travel 389 is about “connecting with the people who are the backbone of this county — the farmers, the small business owners, the entrepreneurs, and the manufacturers.” She noted that the commission had planned visits with a wide array of enterprises, including ag-related businesses, family-owned ventures, and those creating a stake for future generations.

She emphasized the program was designed to be a "two-way conversation," allowing the commission to better understand the challenges and opportunities facing residents and businesses outside of their regular meetings.”

The initiative is planned to continue throughout the fall, with the commission scheduled to visit Hoisington and Claflin on Tuesday, Sept. 16, with stops at: Squeegy’s Bar and Grill, the site of a planned USD 112 Central Plains School District daycare facility, Central Plains Co-op, Millers of Claflin, Cheyenne Bottoms Armory/Quilting by Vickie, Bailey’s Food Bin and Front Street Merchants, all in Claflin; and Ehler Cheverolet in Hoisington.

The next stop will be Ellinwood on Tuesday, Sept. 23.

Hoisington marks first Travel 389 visit for Barton County Commission

"Only warped scum would protest a 14-year-old murder victim's memorial service." Emotions in Great Bend were already riding high following the Aug. 22, 2010, murder of 14-year-old Alicia DeBolt. A public memorial service was scheduled at the Barton County Courthouse nine days later. An infamous protest group from northeast Kansas learned of the service and wanted to bring its emotionally-charged message to an already emotional town. Bob Suelter grew up down the street from the group and was serving as Great Bend's city attorney at the time. He became a go-between between the city and the group.

"When you get into a situation like this, you have to ignore whether you agree or disagree with what they're saying," Suelter said. "You have to be in it for public safety, to keep innocent people from getting hurt, to keep people who are provocative from getting hurt, and to try and get this over with and not have anybody get hurt."

The group originally contacted then-Chief of Police Dean Akins, who approached the city administrator and Suelter about the group's wish to protest at the memorial. Suelter understood the right to protest but also his own community's desire to grieve.

"I thought, well, this memorial service is at the bandshell," he said. "I thought if they set up on the front entrance on the west side of the courthouse, that would get them further way. I was afraid they'd want to be real close."

The group did not want to be that close. Instead, they were to be staged in the northwest corner of Jack Kilby Square. Akins was out of town that evening and Great Bend Police Captain Bob Robinson took the lead, securing barricades from the city street department to set up an area of control. The protestors would be set up in the smallest area, followed by a buffer zone filled with police officers, then potentially angry crowd of mourners.

"They had arranged for some security on the outside, and that was the Sidewinders MC," said Suelter. "You would not think they would not provide security, but they did a heck of a job. I was amazed. Mike Urban was the president of the club at hte time. He did a heck of a job of getting the guys organized and making sure they stayed calm."

Across the street, riot guards from a nearby prison remained hidden from sight inside the Barton County Sheriff's Office. Their presence was never required as local law enforcement helped keep the peace.

"(The protestors) didn't want to be attacked," Suelter said. "They just wanted everyone's blood pressure up around 200, which worked on me because I think mine was up there around 200 when this was over."

The protestors arrived in Great Bend that evening and met Suelter and Robinson at the Casey's General Store on East 10th Street. Despite their message, Suelter recalls the small group of protestors having a friendly disposition. A plan was secured and the protestors arrived in a van parked on the north side of the courthouse.

As the protest began, the crowd outside the barriers grew to four, five, and six people deep. Suelter kept his eye on the crowd and could not see what was going on behind him.

"You could tell the crowd was picking up, so there was something going on behind me," he said. "They had a group of signs, then one lady had an American flag around her neck. The crowd was booing, and they would get louder. The police being there, and the courtesy and decency of the people of Great Bend, nobody got out of hand during the actual event."

The crowd's agitation continued to grow, and soon people were moving. He knew he would be a mere speed bump should the crowd decide to attack the protestors. He believes the protestors knew they had accomplished their mission and knew it was time to leave town.

"It was an interesting crowd because nobody got out of hand," said Suelter. "I was so happy and, really, so proud of Great Bend. The people came to show their displeasure with what these people stand for and what they were saying and doing, but they didn't become violent in the sense that they didn't hurt anybody."

The evening was not finished, however. As the protestors retreated to their van, a Great Bend resident kicked the back window out of the vehicle. The protestors were able to back out and flee the area, running the stoplight at Broadway and Kansas as they headed east.

"They weren't even out to the Bypass when my phone rang," Suelter said. "It was the guy I'd been talking to and coordinating the whole thing with. He said, 'We'll prosecute. We have a back window broken out. We see you guys have the person down, and we have it all on video.'"

Suelter said the resident responsible for the damage was later prosecuted and paid the protestors restitution for the window. There was also a public sentiment that evening to post the man's bond and get him out of jail.

Suelter, who stood between the protestors and the angry crowd, said he never feared for his own safety but did fear the agitators might accomplish their mission of making bigger headlines.

"I was concerned about people getting out of control," he said. "I wasn't concerned about them hurting me. I was concerned about them hurting the (protestors), and I think the police officers were, too. In another time, another place, I might have been one of the people yelling at (the protestors). But I felt it was my job to do this and be the operator of the whole thing."

The situation also gave Suelter a deeper respect for the law enforcement officers who were also tasked to provide security for a group they disagreed with.

"They have to stand there and take it for somebody else," Suelter said. "That's kind of the way it was going. None of the people there, that I know of - none of the officers there - would probably agree with what the (protestors) stood for, but they were all willing to stand out there and defend their right to say it."

Adam Longoria was convicted on several charges, including the murder of DeBolt, in April 2012. That June, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Cardinal Video Stream TONIGHT

Popping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.

The team was organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) with support from Kansas Wheat. Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.

East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.

The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.

“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”

Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.

“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement.  </figure>From Kansas WheatPopping a kernel of wheat in your mouth for a quick chew to test quality is almost instinctive, whether you are a Kansas farmer or the leader of a major East African conglomerate. Exploring a shared emphasis on wheat quality, as well as exploring the U.S grain production, handling and marketing systems, was the goal of a Tanzanian trade delegation that traveled to Kansas earlier this week.The team was organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) with support from Kansas Wheat. Team members included two members of the Bakhresa Group, a diversified, family-owned and operated business in East Africa that operates in agro-processing, food and beverages, packaging, logistics, media, marine transport and more. Bakhresa is the largest grain milling company in East Africa with operations in nine countries, including Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Rwanda, Burundi, Zimbabwe and South Africa.After starting their mission in South Dakota, the team traveled to Kansas and visited the USDA Federal Grain Inspection Service (FGIS), the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center, and the IGP Institute. They also met with grain suppliers, handlers and exporters. The team aimed to gather firsthand information on U.S. wheat production and to gain a deeper understanding of the U.S. grain marketing system.East Africa relies on imports of wheat to produce a wide range of daily bread products, from traditional mandazi, a fried bread eaten for breakfast, to newly introduced products like instant noodles. Russia has historically supplied more than 50% of imports; however, companies like Bakhresa are exploring ways to diversify their suppliers.The team went to Justin Knopf’s machine shop near Gypsum to discuss everything from tractors to the dynamics of working in a family-owned business. For Knopf, a fifth-generation farmer who works alongside his father and brother, connecting with customers not too far removed from himself in the grain supply chain gave him goosebumps.“The relationships between U.S. farmers and these gentlemen running a family business providing flour and baked goods in East Africa are significant to me,” Knopf said. “It’s meaningful to know that they probably have very similar conversations on a day-to-day basis as my brother, dad and I have. Even though it’s a different type of business, the conversations and the values are the same.”Of course, the Bakhresa team members eagerly reached into the bucket of U.S. hard red winter (HRW) wheat Knopf had ready, even chewing a kernel or two, and noting the wheat’s premium quality.“They were very pleased with the wheat sample from my field and my farm,” Knopf said. “That’s very reaffirming, and it gives me more motivation and inspiration for that mindset of continuous improvement. Barton’s Fine and Performing Arts faculty will come together for a special collaborative event showcasing their talents through live performances and displayed art pieces inspired by their colleague’s creative work at 5 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Fine Arts Auditorium.

Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator Danika Bielek said the event’s title, “Art Inspires Art,” describes the shared admiration Barton’s arts faculty has for each other's work and alludes to the process of how the event was developed.

“Music, art, theatre, and dance faculty shared works they wished to present during a creative brainstorming session,” she said. “Artwork has been paired with and sometimes inspired the direction performances would take. It’s like having a breath of fresh air breathed into the creative work. I think showing our students how to share and collaborate with others is such a valuable lesson.”

Instructor of Keyboard Studies and Director of Accompaniment Dr. Alejandro Avila expressed how he enjoyed the creative process for this event.&nbsp;

“Collaborating with our Fine Arts faculty for this recital and exhibition is truly inspiring,” he said. “It’s exciting to see such tremendous artwork paired with powerful musical works, and refreshing to share in this creative exchange. I’m thrilled to be part of such a meaningful collaboration.”

A projector will display artwork and include pieces by Mark Freeman, Magdalena Jacobson (Mantra Cora), Philip Rubinov Jacobson, and Brandon Steinert.

Great Bend Utilities Department to conduct in-person home and business visits

The proceeds from items sold, underwriters, program ads, and ticket sales netted more than $60,000 at the 46th Annual Barton Foundation’s Big Benefit Auction on Aug. 23, which will benefit students directly through scholarships and program enhancements at Barton Community College.

Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Lindsey Bogner said the auction is an excellent opportunity to see the communities of Barton County come together to support the students.

“It’s incredibly moving to witness the generosity of our communities,” she said. “Every dollar raised is a direct investment in our students’ futures, and the energy in the room that night reflected just how deeply people care about Barton’s mission.”

The Big Benefit Auction is the most successful and longest-running fundraiser for the Barton Foundation. The money raised supports academic scholarships and enhancements to programs and facilities that will directly impact the learning experience of Barton students.

Marian Dewerff of Ellinwood was recognized for her years of support to the college and Foundation by being named the recipient of the Old Bill Honorarium. This year, Old Bill raised over $19,000 to fund academic scholarships for the 2025-2026 year in honor of Dewerff.

Bogner said the event’s success is made possible by the collective efforts of many, especially the underwriting sponsors: Nex-Tech, Spectrum Partners, and UMB Private Wealth Management. Applause erupted when Jefferson Elementary's Olivia Neely was surprised in her classroom as the second winner of Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI. Just a third grader, Neely already understands the importance of bettering the lives of those around her.

"I make a difference by helping people around me make someone's day better by making them laugh and saying my prayers," she said.

All K-6 students in Barton County are eligible for the contest. In addition to the $100 from OPI, Olivia also took home goodies from the contest's other sponsors. As a weekly winner, Olivia will now be one of just a few finalists for another $100 in the September monthly drawing. Mrs. Cale, Olivia's teacher, would also win $100 if Olivia is selected in the monthly contest.

Jefferson Elementary's Neely wins $100 in Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest

 In 1902, Hays, Kansas, was a vibrant yet rugged railroad and military outpost in the heart of the sprawling High Plains. The town offered opportunity and challenge, attracting a colorful mix of characters—from hardworking pioneers and recent immigrants seeking a fresh start to those with less honorable intentions. To thrive in such an environment required more than mere survival; it demanded an adventurous spirit, an ability to adapt, and heaps of determination. 

As Fort Hays State University (FHSU) opened its doors within the confines of a former military hospital on the grounds of the historic Fort Hays, it became a place where that very spirit flourished, shaping a community that continues to resonate with the same tenacity that built it.&nbsp;

Associate Professor of Teacher Education Matt Clay is at the forefront of this endeavor, a living testament to the adventurous spirit that defines FHSU. 

Raised in the rural town of Clearwater, situated southwest of Wichita, Matt spent his childhood outdoors, soaking up the beauty of nature while engrossed in tales of adventure. Books detailing the exploits of figures like Teddy Roosevelt and Sir Edmund Hillary inspired him. They instilled in him a lifelong passion for exploration—one he would carry into his career as he prepared the next generation of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) educators.&nbsp;

Matt began his academic journey at Pittsburg State University, earning a bachelor of science in education, focusing on biology. He regularly led students on expeditions to the breathtaking Rocky Mountains and introduced them to the intricate art of using 360-degree landscape cameras to capture stunning vistas from heights exceeding 13,000 feet. The visuals they captured were transformed into teaching resources that now extend educational experiences to K-12 teachers and students around the globe.&nbsp;

With an undying curiosity driving him, Matt envisioned aligning his work with the established narratives of exploration he admired so much during his youth. 

Thus, he contacted the president of the Rocky Mountain Chapter of the New York City-based Explorers Club—a premier organization devoted to supporting scientific expeditions across varied disciplines. Known for its illustrious members, including Arctic pioneers Robert Peary and Roald Amundsen, astronauts like Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and zoologist Jane Goodall, the club has long been a beacon for individuals passionate about discovery.&nbsp;

“I wasn’t sure if my work would even qualify for membership,” Matt confessed. “However, I felt compelled to give it a shot, even just to deepen my understanding of what being a member meant.” To his astonishment, his application was accepted in June, allowing him to become part of a legacy that typically includes those in hard science fields. “I was amazed,” he admitted. “This was a world I’d only dreamed of entering.”&nbsp;

Since joining this esteemed organization, Matt has gained more than just a membership card; he has tapped into a treasure trove of resources and connections in exploration. 

He met a botanist who has conducted groundbreaking fieldwork in the Himalayas—a dream location for Matt, who aspires to photograph its grandeur with his landscape camera. Additionally, access to valuable insights, like strategies for maintaining equipment in frigid conditions, has enriched his craft and field operations.&nbsp;

Emboldened by his connection to the Explorers Club, Matt envisions personal growth and avenues for his students to engage in exploration. “There are numerous private and corporate donors that could support the efforts of club members,” he explained. “While such funding rarely supports university work, opportunities arise if one isn't afraid to ask.”&nbsp;

His wife, Krysten, initially raised an eyebrow when he shared the news of his acceptance. “She wondered how I could benefit from a club I’d rarely visit,” he laughed, recounting his attempts to convince her. “I pointed out that the club’s location, just two miles from Broadway in Manhattan, might offer its own adventures!”&nbsp;

Matt Clay epitomizes the ethos of our Tiger Teacher Nation at FHSU. He doesn’t merely teach future educators; he embodies the passion for discovery that inspires them. 

Alongside his wife and three children, he dedicates his time to exploratory missions throughout Kansas and the Rocky Mountains, braving snowstorms, extreme cold, and wildfire threats alongside his intrepid students. Together, they’ve trekked to some of the most remote areas, documenting the natural world and forging connections between exploration and education.&nbsp;

Old Business Items: Reports ENRICHMENT REPORTS- Garet Fitzpatrick, Enrichment /Activity Center Director

We set up a booth at the USD 428 Business Showcase on Friday, August 8, in the morning. We had information on our upcoming fall programs, and we had a door prize drawing for three Scooters gift cards along with several boxes of candy. The winners worked at Lincoln School, the Middle School, and Barton Community College.

We also had a table at the Great Bend High School Football Jamboree on Friday, August 29, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. We had poster boards along with markers to let kids and adults make a sign to support their favorite fall athlete or coach.

This fall we will be offering the following Kids Day Out programs for when school has early dismissal and when school is out for the day: Birds &amp; Bugs with KWEC: Monday, October 6, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm, Babysitting 101: Monday, October 6, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm,

Strataca at the Kansas Underground Salt Mine Kids Day Out: Friday, October 17, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, Half Day of Spooky Crafts: Thursday, October 23, from 1:00 – 5:00 pm, and

Heartland Farm &amp; Bowling Kids Day Out: Friday, October 24, from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm.

Our fall afterschool programs in the school sites will start up the week of October 6 and come to an end the second week of December.

Once again, we are offering a wide range of enrichment programs for all ages this fall.

We are collaborating with a number of different organizations in offering these programs including USD 428, City of Great Bend, Great Bend-Brit Spaugh Zoo, K-State Research and Extension – Cottonwood District, Kansas Wildlife and Parks, The University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend, Great Bend Police Department,

Barton County Sheriff Department, Great Bend EMS/Fire Department, Barton County Health Department, Kansas Wetlands Education Center, Heartland Farms, Walnut Bowl, Central Kansas Thread Benders, BMO Bank, N.A., and No Limits Kennels, LLC.

There was no other August activities planned as we began preparing for our Fall programming.

September Adaptive &amp; 50 Plus Activities:

SN Bowling will meet at its regularly scheduled times for our Adaptive programming.

Fall programs will kick off on October 7th for our Adaptive and 50 Plus Enrichment areas.

We took the month of August off for Facility maintenance. Classes will resume in September.

We don’t have a ton of old business to report on since the last time we met 2 weeks ago. The transition period from Summer to Fall is over and all Fall sports are up and running.

Youth Flag Football kicked off practice games on Tuesday 9/2 and real games will begin the week of Monday 9/8. This year we have 154 players enrolled. That is up 6 players from last year.

Outdoor Youth Soccer started playing practice games on Saturday 9/6 and real games will begin Saturday 9/13. This year we have 168 players enrolled, the exact same number as last year.

Coed Adult Volleyball started playing the Fall sessions on Wednesday 9/3 and Friday 9/5. Monday Women’s League will start Monday 9/8. There are 28 teams participating this year compared to 16 teams last Fall.

Men’s 3 on 3 Basketball began play on Sunday 9/7. This is the 4th session in a row that we have had a full league of 8 teams.

Instructional 1st – 2nd grade volleyball stated Tuesday 9/2. There are a total of 27 kids enrolled, up 4 from last year.

4-and 5- year old instructional outdoor soccer also started Tuesday 9/2. We have enough kids this year that I went ahead and split it into 2 groups. There are 32 kids enrolled, up 14 from last year.

In the month of August, there were 3,511 people enrolled in programs sponsored by the Recreation Commission. Total participation for the month was 5,900 and of that total, 2,322 were spectators. For the month, a total of 946 hours of supervised activities were offered.

Last year there were 3,722 people enrolled in programs with total participation of 4,655 of which 1,205 were spectators.

Each year GBRC has done a Pawsome Easter Egg hunt for the dogs in town. This event is always publicized as a fundraiser for future Dog Park Improvements. This year there are some toys that the dogs might have interest in.

2. Golf Course Architect Agreement: Action Item:

The next step in the Golf Course project is to get a more detailed idea of what the course could look like in the future. Having this plan put into motion early will help determine placement of the sprinkler system and playability moving forward. We will discuss options at the meeting. The proposal is attached as well.

3. City Auditorium Fans: Action Item:

Hammeke Electric installed the ceiling fans in the City Auditorium. The fans were harder to install than first originally planned. The invoice amount of $14,804.48 is the final bill for installation. We will discuss it at the meeting.
