GRAY COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 8 a.m. Thursday in Gray County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2022 Ford F250 driven by Saul Guerra-Montelongo, age 24 of Great Bend, was westbound on the north shoulder of U.S. 50 Highway, four miles east of Kansas 23. The driver attempted a U-turn and failed to yield.&nbsp;

A westbound 2012 Ford Fusion driven by Bridget Marie James, age 47 of Dodge City, struck the pickup.&nbsp; 

EMS transported James to the hospital in Garden City. Guerra-Montelongo was not injured. Both drivers were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Great Bend man attempting U-turn involved in crash

Not every restaurant has a proven track record. With a successful Mi Tierra Mexican Restaurant in Hoisington, and sister store El Potrillo in Lyons, however, the newest restaurant in Larned already has a fan base. Wednesday morning, the Larned Area Chamber of Commerce was at the Larned store, located in the old Wendy's building, to cut ribbon on new Larned branch. Mi Tierra Manager Kim Upright said it has been a busy first week.

"We're quite popular in Hoisington, and there are a lot of people who come from Great Bend, Ellinwood, Russell, and all around to the Hoisington one," she said. "We're quite excited for this one to be open."

Mi Tierra in Larned will offer its many familiar Mexican and American dishes, but the Larned restaurant is breaking into new territory as well.

"We have American breakfasts, your regular pancakes, bacon and eggs, and omelets," Upright said. "Then we have some Mexican-style breakfasts like breakfast burritos, huevos rancheros, chilaquiles, stuff like that."

Mi Tierra in Larned will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, and open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Mi Tierra cuts ribbon on new restaurant in Larned

Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Christina Hayes told
the Great Bend City Council her department is ready to accomplish another
strategic plan item. Funds are available to purchase 15 wayfinding signs to
place throughout town to direct motorists to points of interest and city
locations. 

The city council approved the purchase for $44,950 from Mark's Custom
Signs. "We did have $50,000 set aside to purchase these," said Hayes. "This is money we have saved. We earmarked it for this." 
Hayes said the city chose Mark's Custom Signs as the contractor because the
company is local and they handled the city’s two, large welcome signs entering
town on U.S. 281 Highway and U.S. 56 Highway. The wayfinding signs will look
similar or cohesive to match the welcome signs. Hayes added the city is still
saving money to pay for more welcome signs to place near the city’s main
entrances.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) has issued a stream advisory for the Wolf Creek near Lucas, Kansas and the Saline River from Lucas, Kansas to Culver Kansas in Russell, Lincoln, Ottawa, and Saline County Kansas.

The stream advisory is a result of an ongoing investigation by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and KDHE to identify a potential substance.

If you live or have activities near this stream, do not enter the stream or allow livestock, children, or pets to enter the stream.

KDHE will rescind the advisory once the stream has been deemed safe for secondary (wading) contact and livestock use.

Stream advisory for part of Russell County's Wolf Creek

This is day 8 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.

Kansas wheat harvest is 46% complete, well behind 80% last year, and behind 63% for the five-year average, according to the official statistics provided by the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service in its crop progress report for the week ending July 2, 2023. Winter wheat conditions rated 51% very poor to poor, 33% fair and 16% good to excellent.&nbsp;

Hot temperatures through July 4th meant farmers were in the fields ahead of the widespread showers that moved in on the evening of the July 4th holiday.&nbsp;

In Ness County at the D.E. Bondurant Grain Company, Gary Gantz said during the 4th of July weekend, several producers were cutting wheat. Friday and Saturday were particularly busy days, especially for the Riverside location. Gantz predicted harvest will continue into late July.

Gantz stated farmers in the area who had not terminated their wheat were seeing slightly better yields than what they had initially thought. Yields ranged from 25 to 35 bushels per acre, with decent test weights and high proteins in the 12.5 to 14 percent range.&nbsp;

Last year, during the 2022 wheat harvest, which was another dry year for the Kansas wheat crop, Gantz recalled they only received about 50% of their normal amount of wheat. With the already dry conditions following 2022, the 2023 crop was off to less than ideal conditions that continued into harvest. This harvest, the elevator is seeing a mere 25% of normal wheat quantity. About 40-50% of the planted 2023 wheat crop in the area was abandoned. Although this wheat crop was very disappointing, with these late rains, Gantz noted the elevator remains optimistic for currently growing fall crops. One such rain event brought as much as three inches of rain.

Derek Sawyer, a Kansas Wheat Commission board member located in McPherson County, reports that he wrapped up his 2023 wheat harvest on July 1st, having started on June 15th. He adds that 85-90% of his county has also finished their harvest for this year.&nbsp;

“I had some really bad double crop that averaged 20 bushels per acre,” Sawyer said, noting his overall crop average was 48 bushels per acre.

An outstanding variety for Sawyer was WestBred 4699. His protein was 14 percent, with test weights in the 58-60 pound range, just slightly below average. There was very little abandonment in the area, about 5-10%, due to the challenges of the spring freeze and hail. In addition to freeze damage and hail being an issue, thin wheat stands caused weed pressure to be more prevalent.&nbsp;

Kendall Poland, of the Sublette Co-op in Haskell County, said harvest has just really gotten started. Only one of his farmers has been able to get into the fields after these recent rains. The wheat crop is shaping up to be very minimal so far - almost 95% of dryland wheat acres were abandoned in the area. With wheat harvest only having just begun on Tuesday, June 27, and more rain in the forecast, wheat harvest might extend much further into the calendar than what anyone is used to.

Despite the slow start to harvest, Poland remarked how much of a blessing these rains have been to this parched area of Kansas. Hailstorms have torn through the area causing damage to corn and cotton acres. Although the hail wasn’t large, there was a lot of it.

With moisture still persisting, many parts of the state that have wheat left to cut will be delayed a few more days. Check back on July 10 as the Kansas Wheat crew continues to share results from the field with the next harvest report.&nbsp;

Car lovers received a treat last Friday in Great Bend when more than 100
vintage vehicles, that were made at least 50 years ago, made a lunch stop at
Brit Spaugh Park. The Great Race started in Florida and ended in Colorado,
making a 2,300-mile trek across the country.

the route, drivers made a stop in Great Bend where they were treated to a meal,
just north of the zoo. Assistant City Administrator Logan Burns said many
residents received a chance to talk with contestants. "The Great Race owner Jeff Stone said he hopes to come back to Great Bend in three to five years, because we did treat him so good," said Burns. "We had 158 cars come through and 89 of those participants went to the zoo."

Among the vehicles was a 1916 Hudson Pikes Peak Hill Climb. The contestants do
not have GPS and are instead given written instructions to tell them where to
go. Racers are penalized for every second they are late or early to a checkpoint. Winners are based on how many points they accumulate during the race. 
Burns said approximately 2,100 people attended the event at Brit Spaugh Park. Local car club members paid for a meal to offer the contestants.

Thursday's weather

It is fair time in Barton County! Barton County kicks off one of the first county fairs in Kansas. This is my first fair season as an extension agent so I’m looking forward to lots of learning opportunities as well as meeting new people, families, and children. I attended some of the pre-fair activities last week and learned all about buymanship, fiber arts, life skills and clothing construction. Wow! Those kids put a lot of work into their projects. The sewing projects were impressive. I admire families that are teaching their kids this skill. That is just one of the projects I mentioned, but kids learn so many life skills just by entering something into the fair. It can improve their self-esteem by showing off something they made. Kids can also learn how to improve projects by sitting down and talking one on one with the judges. They learn that they have follow the rules in whichever class they enter. I will be attending opening day of the fair to help with the foods judging.

The fair offers so much fun and excitement from concerts to events and of course, the projects that have been entered. 4-H and open class offers many different projects to look at. It could also help you think of ideas that you might want to enter into next year’s fair. I remember attending fairs when I was little, the carnivals and the animals were the most interesting for me. There really is something for everyone!

Please plan to attend the Business Appreciation Breakfast and Chamber Coffee. There will be great food and prizes. The breakfast begins on July 6, 2023 at 7:30am.

Whether you have entered something in the fair or not, come out and have a good time and support our community and 4-H! It is also the first fair for several of our other agents. Jay Harris is our new District Director, Tamara Robertson is the new 4-H Youth Development Agent, both out of the Ellis County office and Karissa Winkel is our new Family and Community Wellness Agent, who is out of the Great Bend office. The Great Bend Fire Department responded to 22 calls for service on July 4. Of those, eight were medical calls, with one call being fireworks related. The remaining 14 calls were fire related.

Great Bend firefighters responded to two structure fires, one being a backyard shed and was a total loss. The second was a single-family residence in the county. Damage was moderate with fire on the exterior of the home, which spread up to the eaves and caused smoke and heat damage to the attic of the home. GBFD also responded on six grass fires and six dumpster fires. The fires were investigated by the Great Bend Fire Department and determined to be accidental in nature with all of them having fireworks as the cause.

Great Bend Fire Dept. responds to 14 fire calls on July 4

Everyone knows about Girl Scout cookies. For several years, that has been the primary fundraiser for Great Bend's Troop 11135. With some bigger ambitions in mind, the girls are hosting a pair of upcoming bake sales at the Barton County Fair and Ellinwood After Harvest Festival.

"We're going to have several kinds of desserts," said Scout Member Dorthy Tudor. "We're going to have cookies, to breads, to cupcakes. We will be using the money to go to Rocky Mountain National Park for a campout. The entire troop needs additional funding for fall campouts, trips to Colorado, and a bridging ceremony for girls jumping to the next level."

Like the Boy Scouts, the goal of the Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Part of that is learning about community service and the outdoors. A bridging ceremony is a Girl Scout tradition that honors achievements and celebrates "crossing the bridge" to the next scout level. Scout Member Emma Holuska said the organization is a good way to learn about the world around her.

"Girl Scouts helped me meet new girls," she said. "We learn about the outdoors and different opportunities. These trips are small ones. Girl Scouts has endless opportunities as long as funds are available."

Currently, two local girls are visiting Japan with Girl Scouts. The baked goods will be for sale in Expo I at the Barton County Fair on Friday and Saturday, July 7-8, after 5 p.m. each day. The troop appreciates the community's support.

The groundbreaking for the new daycare center in Great Bend has been
pushed back to July 20, but the Advancing Barton County Childcare (ABCC) organization
is excited to announce the location of a second daycare facility to be built
within the county at the ceremony. 

Estimated at $1.6 million, ABCC raised funds
for the daycare facility to be built at the corner of 10th Street
and K-96 Highway. Then ABCC found out they were awarded $2.23 million from the
Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund to help meet the county’s childcare
needs.

Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger said during the
groundbreaking ceremony for the Great Bend daycare, officials will reveal the
site for the second facility which is also fully funded. "It was specified in our grant program," said Arnberger. "We had to tell them what our order would be for daycare locations. They picked which sites we are able to accomplish in order." 
The 6,500-square-foot daycare in Great Bend will be available for up to 59 children.

Originally scheduled for July 11, the groundbreaking ceremony was rescheduled to
accommodate some of the participants’ schedules. The groundbreaking ceremony
July 20 will begin at 10 a.m.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend daycare groundbreaking rescheduled for July 20

Stuff the Bus with United Way of Central Kansas is back this year and is
hoping to double their impact. Volunteers will be out at both Dillons locations
and Walmart in Great Bend on July 22 asking shoppers to pick up
school supplies. Backpacks with supplies will be assembled and distributed to
schools to give to families in need. 

United Way Executive Director Charell
Owings said the Stuff the Bus campaign is focusing on school supplies only this
year. "In the past, we've worked with our agencies to get the supplies they need," said Owings. "That hasn't been as much of a need for them in the past couple of years. We're going to focus on school supplies for students. We want to double the amount of backpacks we give out to 250 hopefully. 
Shoppers can donate the school supplies at Walmart and the Dillons locations
from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on July 22 or they can drop off donations
at Sunflower Bank or the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce during the month of
July. "We also need volunteers," said Owings. "If people don't want to shop, they give monetarily and we'll go do the shopping."

 </figure>Great Bend PostStuff the Bus with United Way of Central Kansas is back this year and is
hoping to double their impact. Volunteers will be out at both Dillons locations
and Walmart in Great Bend on July 22 asking shoppers to pick up
school supplies. Backpacks with supplies will be assembled and distributed to
schools to give to families in need. United Way Executive Director Charell
Owings said the Stuff the Bus campaign is focusing on school supplies only this
year. "In the past, we've worked with our agencies to get the supplies they need," said Owings. "That hasn't been as much of a need for them in the past couple of years. We're going to focus on school supplies for students. We want to double the amount of backpacks we give out to 250 hopefully. 
Shoppers can donate the school supplies at Walmart and the Dillons locations
from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. on July 22 or they can drop off donations
at Sunflower Bank or the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce during the month of
July. "We also need volunteers," said Owings. "If people don't want to shop, they give monetarily and we'll go do the shopping." 
Those who are needing backpacks for their students can reach out to their

Giving Tuesday is fast approaching and will be on Tuesday, November 28, 2023. Planning for this year’s 10th Giving Tuesday has started at the Golden Belt Community Foundation. Again, this year the foundation is inviting all qualified charitable organizations in Barton, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties to participate in the giving campaign and celebration.

This year GBCF will be switching its giving site one last time! GBCF will be communicating through email and Facebook to keep past organizations updated with important information regarding the new giving site. The first step in signing up for the first time or the 10th time is the registration form. The registration form will be shared to the GBCF Facebook page and website. Information will continue to be updated as time gets closer to November 28. #GoldenBeltGives

Any organization that would like to sign up for this year’s Giving Tuesday campaign, please email mackenzie@goldenbeltcf.org or call the office to start the process of getting signed up and answer any questions. These calls/emails are designed to answer questions and help organizations with the new online platform and the registration form.

Invitation to participate in local Giving Tuesday campaign

A warrant was obtained by the Great Bend Police Department for the
property at 301 Chestnut Street stemming from a dog bite incident at the
property in late June. With the warrant, members from the Barton County Health
Department, Golden Belt Humane Society and the Great Bend Building Inspector
conducted an inspection of the mobile home on June 26. 

Wearing biohazard suits, officials
found heaps of trash, live roaches and fleas and animal feces. There were five
dogs and six cats removed from the residence, and officials found the carcass of
what appeared to be a cat.

The Great Bend City Council approved a public hearing for the unsafe and
dangerous structure for Aug. 21. Assistant City Administrator
Logan Burns said the property owner and tenant will have time to clean and haul
off the home prior to the council deciding to demolish or remove structure. 
"This sets the public hearing," said Burns. "At that point, we'll present the same evidence that we have here. This is just to start the process. If they (owner and tenant) don't carry out their end and get everything cleaned up. They can do everything before this, but this is our safety net to make sure it goes through."

Water service was shut off to the residence on June 2, and the only utility hooked up was
electricity. In the bathroom, there were five-gallon buckets being used for
sewage collection. Barton County Health Director Karen Winkelman noted in her report that there was not any area in the house without stepping on roaches, fleas, rubbish or feces. 
The resident sat outside during the inspection and
noted he could find temporary living arrangements with his brother-in-law. The tenant of the property was in violation of city ordinances for the requirements of multiple animal permits.&nbsp; Winkelman assessed the puncture wounds from the dog bite on the tenant's hand and recommended he receive the Tdap vaccination.

Wednesday's weather

On July 4, the United States celebrated its 247th birthday. This year, the city of Great Bend is celebrating its 150th birthday. Not so far behind is Paulina Schartz (Strobel). Born on July 5, 1923, and a lifelong Seward and Great Bend resident, Schartz is celebrating 100 years of life this year. Everything started on a family farm in Seward.

"I can remember when we'd go out and cut corn and had a sled-like thing," Schartz recalls. "Daddy and Uncle Fred would be there. It had two blades on it, so both of them would be catching the corn. They'd throw it all back, then we'd go back and shuck it after got enough of it to do."

The oldest of nine kids, Pauline was born into a world without electricity. In 1925, just half of American homes utilized the life-changing technology. That made running a dairy then vastly more difficult than it would be today.

"We sold milk, so we had to keep the milk as cool as you can," said Schartz. "We had a tank that had water running through it continuously. That way it kept cool in that little building. It kept the butter, milk, and cheese where it would keep good."

Pauline and her siblings attended a school about a mile from the homestead. The teacher of the school stayed at the family farm. Of course, there was no drop-off line back then and the kids walked to and from the school and everywhere else.

But the family did have a car. Pauline believes it was a Hudson coupe, and driving rules were a little bit different back then.

"Daddy couldn't see so he would work the pedals and stuff and I'd sit on his lap and drive it," she said. "We'd go into Seward, which was about five miles. We could get groceries there, and he could get his bottle."

Electricity did eventually reach the farm. Pauline remembers listening to her grandma's radio in her little downtown. And she believes the sewing machine may be the greatest invention of her lifetime, largely because mom made all the clothes. The girls usually had just three dresses.

"We'd look through the catalog and see the dress we wanted," Pauline said. "Mom would cut it out and sew it up for us."

Growing up on the prairie, Pauline saw the full gamut of weather. The Oklahoma panhandle was the epicenter of the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, but the black dust and drought did reach as far as Stafford County.

"I know one day, Daddy and I had gone down to the barn to do some chores and stuff and the dust came in," Schartz said. "It was just as black as it could be. You couldn't even see your hand in front of your face. I know Mom had to come down and help us back to the house. We had three big windows on the south side of our dining room, and Mom would hang damp sheets up there to catch the dust and dirt."

Also missing in the 1930s was any form of storm radar. Severe storms came and went without warning. Flooding was also an issue. According to a FEMA report, the Arkansas River outside Great Bend flowed at nearly 28,000 cubic feet per second in 1965. The third-largest flood occurred in 1921, and rains pushed the river past its limits in May 1935 as Schartz was nearing her teenage years.

"To walk down Main Street, you'd be in water up to your waist," she recalls. "You'd go into Duckwalls and maybe decide you wanted to have something to eat. You could sit there with water up past your ankles."

Travel was largely a novel idea during Pauline's younger years. In 1940, Seward boasted a population of 125 people. The family took trips to nearby lakes, but traveling to the cities was also an adventure. Great Bend had a population of 9,000 people in 1940, and Hutchinson, where Pauline's aunt lived, was the true big city with 30,000 people. 

"We used to drive down there once in a while," Pauline said. "Grandma always made us say the rosary when we were driving. Every once in a while she'd have to stop and holler at daddy because of the way he was going."

Pauline eventually started a family tree of her own. She married Cletus Schartz in 1943, at the age of 20, and remained his wife until he passed away in August 2002. They had one daughter, Marilyn, and the tree grew to include four grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Pauline cannot attribute her 100 years to any one thing. She has long enjoyed hearty breakfasts of bacon and eggs, and she's been known to enjoy a beer or two a day. She lost her sight around 1974, and has been legally blind since, but she's never lived in a nursing home, instead living with grandchildren. She currently lives with her youngest sister, Ruth, and can still dress and feed herself. Perhaps most importantly, Pauline believes she has lived a life to the fullest - a life with no regrets.

The orthopedics, physical therapy and sports medicine care team welcomes Dana Jackson, PA, certified physician assistant, to The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend.

Jackson earned her Bachelor of Science degree in allied health at Doane College in Lincoln, Nebraska, and her Master of Physician Assistant Studies at Union College, also in Lincoln. She has a particular interest in sports medicine.

“The most important part of my job is educating my patients about their treatment options,” Jackson says. “Then, when they make a decision, I support them in it.”

Jackson and her family came to Great Bend to be closer to family who live in Oklahoma. They like smaller towns that offer the outdoor activities they enjoy, and Great Bend provides that for them.

Jackson is married with two sons who are involved in several sports. They like to spend time as a family outdoors, especially at the lake in summer where they swim, fish and go tubing.
