The Great Bend Fire Department responded to 22 calls for service on July 4. Of those, eight were medical calls, with one call being fireworks related. The remaining 14 calls were fire related.
Great Bend firefighters responded to two structure fires, one being a backyard shed and was a total loss. The second was a single-family residence in the county. Damage was moderate with fire on the exterior of the home, which spread up to the eaves and caused smoke and heat damage to the attic of the home. GBFD also responded on six grass fires and six dumpster fires. The fires were investigated by the Great Bend Fire Department and determined to be accidental in nature with all of them having fireworks as the cause.
