Barton Community College has published its annual Community Report, showcasing the institution’s achievements and progress from the past academic year.

Released each fall, the report details how the College has met its mission through various success stories and key data points. The document is organized around the College’s strategic "Ends," set by the Board of Trustees, providing readers with clear, accessible data through charts, graphs, and stories of current and former Barton students.

Among the standout accomplishments for the 2023-2024 academic year is a student headcount of over 10,000, making Barton the second-largest community college in Kansas by headcount for the seventh consecutive year. Additionally, the College’s operations generated a $30 million economic impact for Barton County.

Barton Community College releases annual Community Report 

Even though the drawing for a new Chevy subcompact SUV is set for next April, it is not too early to purchase tickets.

The Sunflower Diversified Services Foundation is offering a maximum of 3,000 tickets for a chance to win a new Chevy Trax ACTIV. Ehler Chevrolet, Hoisington, is a co-sponsor of the fundraiser for children and adults with special needs.

Tickets are $25 each or five for $100. They are available at Westside Market, 5523 10th, or at Sunflower’s website, www.sunflowerdiv.com.

The drawing is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2025, during the annual Sunflower Pancake Feed at the Prince of Peace Parish Center, 4100 Broadway. Ticket holders do not have to be present to win.

“The response was great to our first vehicle drawing two years ago,” said Cody Harris, director of Planned Giving and Community Support. “While the Charity Gala is our biggest fundraiser, this raffle comes in second.”

All proceeds from ticket sales go to the Sunflower Diversified Services Foundation, which purchased the vehicle. The Foundation exists to support Sunflower individuals with disabilities and delays.

“We encourage local and area residents to try their luck at winning this beautiful vehicle,” Harris said. “Everyone can be assured that all proceeds will directly benefit our neighbors with special needs.

“Tax revenues finance many of Sunflower’s services and programs but fall short of meeting all the needs of the individuals we serve,” Harris added. “This vehicle drawing

and other fundraisers help finance medical and dental care, adaptive equipment and much more.”

Sunflower serves infants, toddlers and adults in Barton, Pawnee, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties. It is in its 58th year.

The Kansas Department of Transportation announces the launch of a comprehensive bus study survey to enhance public transportation services across the state.

Anyone can take the survey, especially users of public transit and intercity bus services. KDOT encourages participation in bus study survey 

As the new Outpatient Nursing Supervisor at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), Rosaline Gunn, RN, is using her nursing and administrative skills to oversee Special Nursing Services, Specialty Clinics, and the Operating Room.

Special Nursing involves outpatient care and treatment for those who need wound-care assistance; infusions/injections; catheter insertion; PICC line care and removal; port-a-cath maintenance; blood draws; and other services. “These special treatments enhance the quality of care, while improving the patient’s health and reducing the risk of hospitalization or re-admittance to a hospital,” Gunn noted.

Specialty Care Clinics include cardiology, general surgery, pain clinic, pulmonology, urology, and wound care. “The clinics allow local and area residents to seek treatment close to home. The community is fortunate to access these specialized services at our local hospital.”

The Operating Room provides outpatient surgeries, such as colonoscopies and endoscopies, as well as procedures associated with skin lesions, performed by general surgeon Dr. Brandon Cunningham from HaysMed’s Southwind Surgical clinic.

Gunn has cared for patients and families at PVCH since June 2022, serving as a floor nurse, and charge nurse for acute care before her recent promotion.

“I truly enjoy working at PVCH because of the variety of services offered here,” Gunn commented. “In addition, the patients and staff always have been welcoming, which I appreciate.”

Gunn earned her credentials as a licensed practical nurse at St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Richmond, Va., which is her hometown. Her nursing degree was awarded at Barton Community College.

Previously, Gunn served as a nursing assistant/LPN at Westminster Canterbury Retirement Community in Richmond for 10 years. Gunn moved to Great Bend in 2010 and worked for Angels Care Home Health for about four years.

Gunn and her husband, Richard Gavin Gunn, have two children – Josslyn, 13, and Adrian, 8.

Melanie Urban, PVCH Administrator, said Gunn “demonstrates the leadership skills required to coordinate, supervise and participate in clinical practice and resource management. We are excited she is serving in this new role; she will grow and excel with our exceptional nursing team at PVCH.”

Pawnee Valley Community Hospital, 923 Carroll in Larned, is a 25-bed facility.

Eagle Media's news week in review

Ray Bechard may be the grandfather of successful volleyball in Barton County. He posted a 716-60 record in his 13 seasons at Barton Community College. Now in his 27th season at the University of Kansas, Bechard has been named Big 12 Coach of the Year five times, and his teams have earned 12 NCAA National Tournament appearances. The volleyball tradition continues locally as three Barton County high schools will host substate tournaments this weekend.

"I think volleyball in Barton County has been something that's been focused on for the past several years with all the coaches," said Great Bend coach Shelly Duvall. "Having everybody a part of something so big is so exciting."

All four high schools in Barton County have had versions of success in recent years. In Ellinwood, Greg Maxwell has led the Lady Eagles to a 200-33 record over the past six seasons. Ellinwood ended a 21-year state drought in 2018, taking two of the three matches three sets but finishing at 0-3. The Lady Eagles returned to state in 2021 where they finished fourth. Maxwell set out to build a program and has done just that, entering substate weekend as the No. 1 seed despite having just one senior in Kennedy Behnke on this year's roster.

"It's time and commitment and just believing in the kids, that they want to be part of it," he said. "You have to know we're all on the same page. I don't think you have to be special in who you are. You just have to give them the time and get better each day. That's been a goal of mine. If I'm growing, I think the kids are growing. I've even laughed about where I was at my first couple of years, about what I knew at that point compared to what I know now."

Ellinwood junior Kyndal Moore, who is second on this year's team in kills and blocks, credits club volleyball for some of the success across Barton County.

In Great Bend, Shelly Duvall has led the Panthers to a 64-7 record over the past two seasons. Last year's team set a new school record with 31 wins in a single season. Despite losing six seniors, this year's squad has bumped that record to 33 wins. Duvall expects the success to continue as this year's roster features several juniors, sophomores, and even a pair of freshmen starters.

"I think building a program obviously starts from your middle school and goes up," Duvall said. "Losing six seniors last year, it was eye-opening to see this class come in so confident, but I think that's where those seniors left our team last year. They left with these girls knowing they had just as much potential with or without them, and this group has really taken over and taken the reins."

Great Bend ended a seven-year state drought in 2020 and are looking to and another small drought Saturday as the No. 9 ranked team in Class 5A. Sophomore Kya Behr needs just 29 assists during the substate bracket to move past Taryn Kirmer (Stueder) for the most assists in a season.

A little north, Mykela Riedl has turned Hoisington back into a powerhouse team with a 63-15 record over the last two seasons. The Lady Cardinals were formidable just over a decade go, qualifying for state under Tina Johnson in 2008, then in three straight seasons under Johnson and Jon Bingesser from 2011-13. Those teams placed second in 2011 and fourth in 2013. Bingesser is now the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla. Kayci Hedash led Hoisington back to state in 2018. Riedl played in all 97 sets on the 2011 team.

"It is so much fun to be coaching back in my hometown," Riedl said. "Sports in general, but especially volleyball, has been so important in my life and in making me the person I am. After high school, I almost let volleyball slip out of my life. But I ended up signing with Barton a couple weeks before my freshman season."

Riedl went on to play four years of college volleyball. Her time as a player came to an end but she was not yet finished with the sport.

"I started coaching club," she said. "And once you start coaching, the girls pull you in and it becomes more important than just the game. You want to be great for them and help make Cardinal volleyball be as influential in their lives as it was for you. So to be able to give back to my hometown in that way is very special. Once a Cardinal, always a Cardinal."

Hoisington sophomore Sofia Simic entered Monday's regional competition at the Activity Center just one ace shy of the all-class state record for aces in a season set by Sublette's Emily Lucas in 2008. With 13 aces in those three matches, Simic is now unofficially atop the Kansas high school record books with 151 aces on the season.

The larger area has also seen in its share of volleyball success. Just a little south, Trish Wade led St. John to state titles in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Just a little east, Britney Tenbrink led the now-defunct Quivira Heights to a championship in 2007.

Central Plains began carrying that torch in 2014 when Kim Rolfs led the Lady Oilers to a third-place state finish. Her team went a perfect 43-0 the next season. She then moved on to Little River where she has won back-to-back state titles and the Lady Redskins have been ranked No. 1 this fall.

Lisa Crites took over from there, leading the Lady Oilers to a runner-up Class 2A finish in 2016. Crites won back-to-back titles at the school in 2019 and 2020, and her team made it back to state in 2021 for a third-place finish.

Barton Community College has also experienced a rebound. The Lady Cougars had four straight losing seasons from 2012 to 2015, including a 16-50 run in the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. Barton posted a 49-17 record over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, thanks in part to players like Central Plains' Addison Crites and Ellinwood's Mya Maxwell. Megan Besecker took over the program last season and the Lady Cougs, featuring Central Plains' Kassidy Nixon, are 49-8 since.

Sophomore Kya Behr needs just 29 assists during the substate bracket to move past Taryn Kirmer (Stueder) for the most assists in a season.A little north, Mykela Riedl has turned Hoisington back into a powerhouse team with a 63-15 record over the last two seasons. The Lady Cardinals were formidable just over a decade go, qualifying for state under Tina Johnson in 2008, then in three straight seasons under Johnson and Jon Bingesser from 2011-13. Those teams placed second in 2011 and fourth in 2013. Bingesser is now the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla. Kayci Hedash led Hoisington back to state in 2018. Riedl played in all 97 sets on the 2011 team.<figure>

 </figure>"It is so much fun to be coaching back in my hometown," Riedl said. "Sports in general, but especially volleyball, has been so important in my life and in making me the person I am. After high school, I almost let volleyball slip out of my life. But I ended up signing with Barton a couple weeks before my freshman season."Riedl went on to play four years of college volleyball. Her time as a player came to an end but she was not yet finished with the sport."I started coaching club," she said. "And once you start coaching, the girls pull you in and it becomes more important than just the game. You want to be great for them and help make Cardinal volleyball be as influential in their lives as it was for you. So to be able to give back to my hometown in that way is very special.  </figure>Hoisington sophomore Sofia Simic entered Monday's regional competition at the Activity Center just one ace shy of the all-class state record for aces in a season set by Sublette's Emily Lucas in 2008. With 13 aces in those three matches, Simic is now unofficially atop the Kansas high school record books with 151 aces on the season.The larger area has also seen in its share of volleyball success. Just a little south, Trish Wade led St. John to state titles in 2008, 2010, and 2011. Just a little east, Britney Tenbrink led the now-defunct Quivira Heights to a championship in 2007.Central Plains began carrying that torch in 2014 when Kim Rolfs led the Lady Oilers to a third-place state finish. Her team went a perfect 43-0 the next season. She then moved on to Little River where she has won back-to-back state titles and the Lady Redskins have been ranked No. 1 this fall.<figure>

Crites won back-to-back titles at the school in 2019 and 2020, and her team made it back to state in 2021 for a third-place finish.Barton Community College has also experienced a rebound. The Lady Cougars had four straight losing seasons from 2012 to 2015, including a 16-50 run in the 2014 and 2015 campaigns. Barton posted a 49-17 record over the 2020 and 2021 seasons, thanks in part to players like Central Plains' Addison Crites and Ellinwood's Mya Maxwell. Megan Besecker took over the program last season and the Lady Cougs, featuring Central Plains' Kassidy Nixon, are 49-8 since.

At approximately 3:50 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, Great Bend Fire Department personnel responded to the report of a structure fire in the 1900 block of Main Street in Great Bend. 

Firefighters found fire coming from the door of the building.  Firefighters were quickly able to extinguish the fire and a search of the structure found no one inside. 

 After the fire was extinguished it was discovered that the building appeared to have been broken into.  Investigators from the Great Bend Fire Department, Kansas State Fire Marshal Office and the Great Bend Police Department are investigating this incident. 

 The cause of the fire has been determined as arson.

Earlier this year, Barton County officials were in the thick of
establishing regulations for large-scale solar development. Barton County
passed their regulations April 1, and now the City of Great Bend is
powering through solar discussion as the municipality is getting closer to
locking down their guidelines for any company wishing to construct solar panels
within the three-mile zoning jurisdiction of Great Bend.


Mayor Cody Schmidt appreciated a packed room at Monday’s city council meeting
with citizens that have strong opinions on potential solar development.


"If this topic is near and dear to your heart, the only way we know is by speaking up," said Schmidt. "We received all of your emails. I read every one of them. I encourage all of you to be more vocal prior to these meetings. I think a lot of you are worried about which direction this will go. Please show up to this chamber. It's open to the public for a reason."

The city council voted to send the regulations back to the Planning Commission
to make a few adjustments on the language for general liability insurance and
the groundwater test.


Councilmember Kevyn Soupiset acknowledged fact-based opinions are useful when
the governing body is mulling over decisions.


"In terms of education and facts, we appreciate that," said Soupiset. "Please, when you do reach out to us, try to have some of that in your back pocket. It helps us and keeps the pot from being stirred as much. Sometimes it becomes rumor or misconception and it gets five layers down. Now I don't know if that's true. It helps the process on both sides."

Acciona Energy has shown interest to build solar complexes near Cheyenne
Bottoms, causing some citizens to voice their concerns over the project and

The federally funded Transportation Alternatives (TA) program was
designed for projects that assist with on- and off-road pedestrian and bicycle
facilities, infrastructure projects for improving non-driver access to public
transportation and enhanced mobility. 


In Kansas, the TA program is administered by the Kansas Department of
Transportation. 

Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley said Great Bend
received a grant to make improvements along Main Street.


"Initially, we applied for $600,000 with a $200,000 match," said Cauley. "The State looked at our pictures and descriptions and decided to fund us fully on that."

The project will improve sidewalks, curbs, gutters and ADA accessibility on
Main Street, from 10th to 19th. The grant will also cover
improvements to sidewalks around the Barton County Courthouse.


The project is expected to start in 2026.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend receives grant to improve Main Street sidewalks

Barton Community College has been serving the Ellsworth Correctional
Facility and the Larned State Correctional Facility since 2001 with educational
programming. The programs are designed for incarcerated individuals, covering
everything from GED to post-secondary degrees.


In an attempt to empower offenders to successfully reintegrate into society,
Barton provides education to better job prospects since a key barrier for
ex-offenders is employment. Barton’s Coordinator of Correctional Education
Services Nicole Barr said teaching classes to inmates can help break the cycle
of incarceration.


"A lot of times these individuals come into prison, and they don't even know that education is something they can obtain," said Barr. "They have grown up in poverty or families that don't support that. When they come to prison, they truly start to find themselves through education. Education provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities for personal growth."

In a presentation to the Barton Board of Trustees on Tuesday, Barr stated for
every $1 invested in correctional education saves taxpayers $5 in terms of
recidivism costs. 
Board Chairman Mike Johnson noted the impact of residents who participate in
correctional educational programs have a 43% lower chance of reoffending. 

"We used to get some pushback from the community as Trustees why we're involved in this," said Johnson. "That recidivism rate...that's a no-brainer. When you can almost reduce it by 50%, that's huge. Facility and the Larned State Correctional Facility since 2001 with educational
programming. The programs are designed for incarcerated individuals, covering
everything from GED to post-secondary degrees.
In an attempt to empower offenders to successfully reintegrate into society,
Barton provides education to better job prospects since a key barrier for
ex-offenders is employment. Barton’s Coordinator of Correctional Education
Services Nicole Barr said teaching classes to inmates can help break the cycle
of incarceration.
"A lot of times these individuals come into prison, and they don't even know that education is something they can obtain," said Barr. "They have grown up in poverty or families that don't support that. When they come to prison, they truly start to find themselves through education. Education provides incarcerated individuals with opportunities for personal growth."<figure>

every $1 invested in correctional education saves taxpayers $5 in terms of
recidivism costs. 
Board Chairman Mike Johnson noted the impact of residents who participate in
correctional educational programs have a 43% lower chance of reoffending. "We used to get some pushback from the community as Trustees why we're involved in this," said Johnson. "That recidivism rate...that's a no-brainer. When you can almost reduce it by 50%, that's huge. I would like to know what the state thinks the dollar amount is they're saving. Barton Community College seeing impact of correctional education

Fort Hays State University President Tisa Mason’s tour of Kansas begins on October 25 in Dodge City. During the four days of the tour, she will make 21 stops and cover more than 1,000 miles, meet with journalists in small Kansas community public and commercial radio stations, participate in two live TV programs, and sit down for an extensive podcast interview. This year’s tour will focus on the impact of the people, programs, and partnerships of FHSU on our state.&nbsp;

On this year’s tour, Mason will be joined at several tour stops by the presidents of FHSU’s Strategic Affiliation partner universities, President Eric Burks of Fort Hays Tech | North Central, and President Ben Schears of Fort Hays Tech | Northwest. The trio will participate in panel discussions in Goodland and Beloit to share updates on the ongoing work of the Affiliation Implementation Teams charged with creating new academic pathways, integrating student services, and creating the business and community partnerships that best serve the workforce development needs of rural Kansas. The three presidents will also participate in TV and radio interviews in Wichita on October 30.

October 25: Dodge City, Garden City, and Goodland

Tour stops on day one will focus on addressing domestic violence and sex trafficking in rural Kansas. In addition, a panel discussion will be hosted by Fort Hays Tech | Northwest on our collaborative effort to enhance educational opportunities and services in rural Kansas. The construction and engineering design Affiliation Implementation Team is working to address regional workforce needs, expand student opportunities, and create innovative educational pathways between our three affiliation partner institutions.

Tour stops on day two will include two radio interviews and a panel discussion on how FHSU and Fort Hays Tech | North Central are working to address the shortage of nursing and healthcare services professionals in rural Kanas.&nbsp;

President Mason will first visit the Topeka Correctional Institute for a radio interview about FHSU’s adult literacy outreach partnership that is helping incarcerated women connect with their children, grandchildren, and other family members. She will then meet with reporters to discuss the Docking Institute for Public Policy’s 2024 Kansas Speaks public opinion survey. Day three will conclude with a podcast interview and TV appearance that will focus on the progress of the Strategic Affiliation Initiative since it was launched in July of this year.

Presidents Burks and Schears will join President Mason for a live TV interview and then participate in a radio interview. The three will share information on the progress of the Strategic Affiliation Initiative. The tour will conclude with two media interviews in Great Bend. The time of year is among us in which the temptation to over-indulge is high. Beginning with Halloween treats and ending with Superbowl snacks, it's difficult to maintain a healthy diet throughout the holiday season.

K-State Extension Specialist, Sharolyn Jackson notes, “On average, Americans gain one to two pounds during the holidays, though some may gain five times that much.”

A few pounds over the winter season isn’t something to fret about, but if Americans don’t lose the added weight, it will accumulate every year. This can have a serious negative impact on overall health.

The key is to plan for the season and to make a conscious effort to stay healthy through the food marathon of the holidays. Jackson’s advice is to plan:

Plan to stay active. Find time for physical activity, even if you aren’t able to do as much as previously.

“Physical activity is something that you need to put in your schedule so that it’s more apt to happen,” Jackson advises. “It doesn’t have to be the same type of physical activity routine that you have the rest of the year. Maybe it’s for a shorter amount of time, but make sure you are not getting out of the habit.”

Plus, exercise can be helpful in other areas of life. For example, walking can reduce the stress associated with the harried pace of the holidays.

Plan for what you’re going to eat. Make healthy choices, but enjoy your favorite holiday foods, as well.

As for sticking to nutritious meals, be sure to plan your meals throughout the week. This allows you to control 70% of your diet. And for holiday parties and dinners, Jackson says, “We all struggle with those.”

At holiday gatherings, aim to fill up on fruits and vegetables, and take a smaller plate through the buffet line. This means you will likely take less food. Also, look at what’s on the buffet before filling your plate so you can plan your meal accordingly.

There’s no need to completely skip desserts, Jackson adds, but be realistic. “Think about smaller portions. Share a piece of pie with someone else. Learn to accept smaller portions.”

Plan to stick to your regular sleep routine. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time every morning.

The holidays can throw our entire schedules off, but good sleep hygiene can help us maintain healthy behaviors.

During sleep, our bodies and minds recharge. This helps us fight illness, cope with stress, and balance hormones. Quality sleep can help reduce cravings and energize us to be active which can help us through the holiday food marathon.

All three strategies are equally important. Make a plan now to maintain healthy habits and diminish weight gain this holiday season.
