Thanks to community generosity and a major contribution, the Clara Barton Hospital Foundation announced the 31st Annual Benefit exceeded expectations, raising a remarkable $193,586. Surpassing the initial $178,000 goal, these proceeds funded a new chemistry analyzer for the laboratory and will kickstart the next project for 2024-2025 membership.

The new chemistry analyzer has already significantly impacted Clara Barton Medical Center. This advanced tool is crucial for processing lab tests quickly and more accurately, which is essential for patient care across the entire facility. In 2023, their laboratory performed more than 321,000 tests, emphasizing the need for such reliable and efficient equipment.

Ensuring time-sensitive results are processed without delay, particularly in emergent situations, this analyzer has a STAT feature that prioritizes critical tests. Additionally, its ability to conduct in-house testing for tumor markers, which previously had to be outsourced, speeds up diagnosis and treatment planning.

While improving overall lab efficiency, the new equipment’s ability to handle smaller blood samples also benefits the most vulnerable patients, including pediatric and critically ill individuals.

With the additional $15,586 raised from the major contribution, the foundation is excited to shift focus to the next priority—replacing the hospital’s 23-year-old C-arm machine. This essential equipment is a cornerstone of the radiology and surgery departments, providing high-quality imaging during critical surgical and interventional procedures.

A new C-arm will enhance the surgeons’ ability to perform complex procedures with greater precision, directly improving patient outcomes. As medical technology advances, upgrading this equipment will ensure Clara Barton Medical Center continues to deliver the highest standard of care to our community.

This project holds special significance for the Hoisington community. Ike Walters, the hospital’s first administrator when it opened in the 1950s, helped Clara Barton grow in its early days. Back in 1990, Ike was instrumental in creating the foundation and spearheaded its first foundation membership drives, laying the groundwork for community-driven support that continues to this day.

As Ike once said, “Local people solve local problems best.” The foundation could not agree more and is proud to continue Ike’s vision as a community-driven healthcare facility. His legacy continues as his family owns and runs the Hoisington Dairy Queen, remaining known for its commitment to the community.

Clara Barton Foundation surpasses annual benefit goal; kickstarts new project

The citywide cleanup concluded this past Sunday in Great Bend. The
city-organized event allowed citizens to dump off metal, mattresses, appliances
and other items over the course of nine days.

"I think you get through the summer, the busy months with family and sports," said Burns. "I think you get a little bit of time to rewind after school starts. I think it works out pretty well."

The drop-off for the citywide cleanup was again held at Sunflower Diversified
Services on West 10th Street. 

The first two years of the cleanup saw
235 tons of tires disposed. Even though tires were not accepted this year, the
effort still aids in cutting down abatements throughout town.


"I think have this resource to get rid of some of that stuff helps," said Burns. "On the abatement side that's huge. You're not having to go through that process again. The city offering this service definitely helps on the abatement side."

The County has developed a plan for the annual replacement of a certain number of computers. This practice improves the County’s technological capabilities and allows for more consistent budgeting. The low bid was submitted by Bauer Computers of Great Bend. After the bid was received, it was learned that the 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services Department would receive computer equipment through a different opportunity. The adjusted total, which will be split among departments, is $30,585.10.

&nbsp; &nbsp;B. ROAD AND BRIDGE: Rebuild of Storage Shed – Project Update: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chris Schartz, County Works Director, will present details. One of the south storage buildings at Road and Bridge was damaged in the July, 2023, hail and wind storm. With Commission approval in 2024, that building was demolished by Road and Bridge and Steel Builders Construction, Inc. installed a 50’x180’x16’ eave height Behlen All Steel Building for $316,420.00. Steel Builders has presented Proposal #9435 to furnish and install on the interior of the perimeter walls, 7’9” tall, 26 gauge, colored liner panels with top and side trim. No electrical or plumbing is needed. Cost of the work is $6,226.00.

&nbsp; &nbsp;C. RESOLUTION 2024-19: A Resolution Detailing the Barton County, Kansas, Policy on National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Patrick Hoffman, County Counselor, will provide details. The Kansas National Resource Coalition has presented a proposed Resolution Detailing the Barton County, Kansas, Policy on National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors. The policy addresses eminent domain, land acquisition, the NEPA process, the federal decisions making process relative to NIETCs, defense by the Kansas Attorney General and the County’s defense of citizen interests.

&nbsp; &nbsp;D. JUVENILE SERVICES: Out of State Travel – Bureau of Justice Assistance Second Chance Act Conference: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director, will provide details. In 2020, Central Kansas Community Corrections received a Bureau of Justice Assistance Second Chance (SCA) grant. A component of this grant includes training with the Office of Justice Programs and the US Department of Justice. The Commission will be asked to allow Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director, to attend training in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The event will be held December 16 through 18, 2024.

&nbsp; &nbsp;E. EXECUTIVE SESSION: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Chairman Barb Esfeld will present. Any Commissioner may make a motion for the board to recess to executive session at this time as allowed by K.S.A. 75-4319. Any motion must contain the justification for the executive session, the subject matter to be discussed, any individuals in addition to the board who will attend the executive session and the time at which the regular session shall resume.

IV. ENDING BUSINESS – After new items are heard by the Commission, the following items, including announcements, will be heard.

The Kansas National Resource Coalition has presented a proposed Resolution Detailing the Barton County, Kansas, Policy on National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors. The policy addresses eminent domain, land acquisition, the NEPA process, the federal decisions making process relative to NIETCs, defense by the Kansas Attorney General and the County’s defense of citizen interests.&nbsp; &nbsp;D. JUVENILE SERVICES: Out of State Travel – Bureau of Justice Assistance Second Chance Act Conference: &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; -Marissa Woodmansee, Juvenile Services Director, will provide details. In 2020, Central Kansas Community Corrections received a Bureau of Justice Assistance Second Chance (SCA) grant. The Golden Belt Community Concert Association will celebrate the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” with big band Rhapsody and the Blues and virtuoso trumpet soloist Jens Lindeman at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and Stone.

“Rhapsody in Blue” is garnering new attention in the performing arts this year because of the 100th anniversary of Gershwin’s monumental classic, which includes jazz rhythms and blues elements for the first time in music history.

A novelty in the story of Gershwin’s iconic creation is the astonishing fact that he developed the framework for this amazing piece of music on a train, claiming the train’s “steely rhythms and rattle-ty bang” inspired the jazz and blues rhythms.

Rhapsody and the Blues will perform the first new arrangement of Gershwin’s iconic work since its original dance band version of 1924. Arranged by Matt Catingub, this rendition will feature a special guest pianist and Lindemann playing piccolo trumpet.

In Tuesday’s concert, Rhapsody and the Blues will also play the big band music of Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole, and others. The music includes “Take the A Train,” “Sing, Sing, Sing,” “One O’Clock Jump,” “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” and other big band favorites.

This GBCCA event is open to association members. No single concert tickets are available. Because the association encourages young people’s interest in music and the performing arts, full-time students will be admitted for a $5 donation at the door.

The Golden Belt Community Concert Association and the Great Bend Recreation Commission now provide eight handicap parking spaces in front of the northeast entrance of the auditorium for every concert. Blue cones, placed at the curb before each space, will designate handicap-only parking.

Transportation to the concerts will again be provided for members in the Hoisington area who do not feel comfortable driving at night. Sunflower Diversified Services’ Catch-a-Ride will pick up the members from the parking lot of Hoisington’s Friendship House, 410 E. Third St., at 6:10 p.m. on the night of each concert. Whether you are new to painting in watercolor or are a veteran wanting to further expand your skills, Sr. Jane will help you to learn or further develop your skills by exploring the basics of watercolor painting including utilizing wet on dry and wet on wet techniques. No drawing skills required.

Sr. Belanger to lead Heartland Farm watercolor painting workshop

On Sunday, Oct. 27, at approximately 10:54 a.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to the area of Washington Street and Lakin Avenue in reference to a disturbance. Officers contacted two adult subjects in vehicles. 

During the investigation, officers determined that the disturbance was the result of a road rage type of incident. During the disturbance, one of the subjects involved, Ronald Draney, age 70, pulled a knife on the other driver involved. Officers placed Draney under arrest for aggravated assault and transported him to the Barton County Jail where he was booked in lieu of bond.

Ramirez was placed under arrest for the warrant. She was also found to be in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia before being placed in a Patrol unit. Ramirez was transported to the Barton County Jail where she was booked in lieu of bond.&nbsp;

Public health advisories for Kansas lakes due to blue-green algae

On Nov. 1, from 9:30-3:30 p.m., Stafford County Economic Development is hosting, in partnership with Network Kansas, From The Land of Kansas, Kansas Department of Agriculture, and 21st Central District Extension, a Value Added Food training for entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs who are developing food product to sell. The training is $15 and lunch will be provided. The training is also sponsored by Equity Bank, which has donated funds to help Stafford County Economic Development to train food entrepreneurs.

The speakers will be Russell, Karen Blakeslee, and Bryttni Miller. Blakeslee is the Coordinator of the Rapid Response Center and Co-Director of the Kansas Value Added Foods Lab with K-State Research and Extension. Clara Barton Medical Center is pleased to announce the addition of Marcus Herrera, LCPC, NCC, offering mental health therapy services at both the Hoisington and Great Bend clinic locations. He brings over 10 years of experience in the mental health field and will play a key role in expanding the range of care available to the community.

A native of Great Bend, Herrera holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling. After serving in the Marine Corps, he and his wife returned to their hometown in 2012 to be closer to family. They have three boys—Sakston and twins Callan and Cohen. Outside work, Herrera and his family enjoy attending their children’s sporting events and spending quality time together.

“We continue to expand services for our patients, and recognizing the growing need for mental health care, we are thrilled to welcome Marcus to our team,” said Shayla Cook, Clara Barton Clinics Administrator. “He brings a wealth of experience and expertise to help address our patients’ mental health needs alongside their medical care.”

With over a decade of experience, Herrera has extensively worked with children, adults, families, and individuals in a variety of settings, including child welfare systems, inpatient facilities, and outpatient organizations. His expertise involves treating depression, anxiety, anger, relationship issues, personality disorders, and trauma. Working collaboratively with his patients to support their mental health and overall well-being, he uses a range of modern therapeutic techniques, including mindfulness-based practices, as well as more traditional counseling methods.

“Joining Clara Barton gives me the opportunity to reach individuals who might not seek help through a mental health facility,” said Herrera. “I look forward to working with their reputable medical team to provide comprehensive care for those experiencing mental health challenges.”

As a National Certified Counselor, Marcus is trained in Critical Incident Debriefings and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in Counselor Education and Supervision. He is an active member of the American Counseling Association, the Association for Multicultural Counseling and Development, and Counselors for Social Justice.

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (10/25 - 10/27)

Great Bend Economic Development Director Sara Arnberger and Communications Director Lee Ann June are big fans of Christmas. It's a good fit, then, that Great Bend Alive is taking charge of the fifth annual Christmas Window Decorating Contest in downtown Great Bend. June said businesses must submit applications to participate by Nov. 8.

"This was already established, so people knew about it and it's kind of fun to put our own spin on things," she said. "Pretty much every thing is staying the same as last year, but it's just fun to have our hands in it."

An anonymous donor has again pledged $1,500 for the winning entry as determined by judges, and $1,000 for the second-place window. The People's Choice winner will receive $500. Businesses in downtown Great Bend are eligible but do not have to actively participate.

"We've had several organizations reach out that want to decorate, which is great," June said. "I got a form in today; they have a window but don't want to decorate. They would gladly offer it to one of these organizations. It's a cool partnership that we can bring people together."

Deadline to decorate windows is Nov. 20 so they are completed before the Home for the Holidays Festival and Parade on Nov. 30. New this year, sightseers can learn more about the festive windows via the Great Bend Tours app.

"The GPS will pick up where you're at, tell you who decorated the window, and what business you're at," said June. "It's a cool integration we can add this year."

The National Weather Service works across all seasons, but Barton County Emergency Management Director Sean Kelly said the service has changed some things for this fall and winter.

"They've kind of consolidated some of their verbiage when it comes to watches, warnings, advisories," he said. "You used to see extreme cold watch, wind chill watch. Those are going to turn into extreme cold watch. They're bringing those together. They kind of still have the same parameters but we're just trying to get rid of too many advisory/watch/warnings going out when we can just simplify it."

The effort is part of the Hazard Simplification initiative, which integrates public and partner engagements and social science to improve the services's alert system. Cold weather alerts, including those with wind chill, will be consolidated into extreme cold alerts. Watches are when conditions are possible and warnings are when cold weather conditions are expected. Hard freeze watches and warnings have simply been named freeze watches or warnings.

"Those took effect Oct. 1," Kelly said. "They did some trial and error, some peer review stuff with us, to make sure it sounded good and we thought it was going to be all right. That's what they've gone with."
