The hype has been real in Hoisington. Sofia Simic's reputation proceeded her before her first varsity match as a freshman last year. Now a sophomore, Simic has helped the Lady Cardinals to a 35-4 record and the No. 7 ranking in the always-tough Class 3A. In Monday's regional action at the Activity Center, Simic aced 13 serves in three matches to break the all-class Kansas state record for aces in a season.

"I think this year I've gotten a lot stronger," she said. "I've grown a lot as a player, especially on my serving. I feel like I'm able to hit it a little bit harder just with age, growing up. I also think I've been able to place the ball more accurately. That's been a huge part of why I've gotten so many aces."

Simic entered Monday's regional with 138 aces. Sublette's Emily Lucas previously held the record with 139 aces in the 2008 season. Simic moved into the lead with three aces against Lyons, added one ace in three sets against Ellsworth, then tacked on nine more in the final two sets against Cimarron.

"I'd a say lot of it is mental, just preparing myself at the service line," She said. "I kind of see the floor, see what spots are open, then try to put the ball down."

And it's Simic making the calls. Unlike many high school coaches, Lady Cardinal coach Mykela Riedl does not instruct players where to serve the ball.

"I trust my girls to pick good spots," Riedl said. "We work on that in practice. Unless they absolutely want me to do it, I let the girls decide. We talk about it before the game who want to serve at, where we want to serve, and I let them go from there."

Lucas still holds the state record for aces in a match (15) and in a career (410). Simic put down 10 aces against Hill City on Oct. 3 and had a career-best 11 aces against Larned that same day and against St. John on Sept. 10.

With 73 aces as a freshman, Simic now has 224 aces in less than two seasons. With 595 kills, Simic also leads all-classes this year in Kansas. Ingalls junior Olivia Stein has 562 kills, and fellow Central Kansas League competitor Kendal Brueggen from Hesston has 506.

Hoisington opens substate play Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Activity Center against Smoky Valley.

The Great Bend City Council adopted an ordinance this week allowing a
lot-tie agreement for property owners wanting to merge smaller lots into a larger
lot for zoning purposes.


City Administrator Logan Burns said many pieces of property are owned
contiguously by citizens, and many are not combined. The merger of lots would
allow citizens to add buildable area to their property.


"Inspections has allowed combining lots in the past, but this just gives us a cleaner process," said Burns. "A lot of lots in newer areas and older areas of town...if it's a lot right beside each other and vacant, technically they are separate parcels. This would allow that to get merged together, but not be sold just as an accessory structure in a residential area."

In the past, the bank or mortgage company would often not allow parcels to be
combined because of a lien on the property. This ordinance allows the
Inspections Department to issue a permit for building and zoning purposes after
a lot-tie agreement is carried out. 


The property owner agrees that that the lots will be held under the same
ownership and not sold separately.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend allowing merger of smaller property lots

Venture Corporation wrapped up the resurfacing of Great Bend’s 2024 street
project. The company will begin striping the streets this week and next week. 


The resurfacing project this year tackled three heavily trafficked streets of
Harrison Street, 24th Street and the 281 Bypass. The $938,900
project included 13 blocks of asphalt resurfacing. 


Mayor Cody Schmidt and Public Works Director Jason Cauley noticed a section of
the 281 Bypass, near 10th Street, that was lower causing puddles
after the rain.


"It's also where the asphalt is meeting 10th Street," said Schmidt. "With moisture Monday, it puddled really bad there."

"We'll bring it to Venture's attention and have them take a look at that," responded Cauley. "We have not done final assessments on those yet."

On the 281 Bypass, work stretched from 10th to Main. On 24th Street, the
project went from the Bypass to McCormick Street. On Harrison Street, work went
from 10th to Broadway.

Work nearly complete on resurfacing projects in Great Bend

The stops between Great Bend and Ellsworth are few and far between. Chris and Verna Montoya bought the small gas station in Holyrood in 1986, renaming the joint C &amp; V's and turning it into a popular one-stop shop and diner. Verna passed away in 2021. After Chris's unexpected death on July 4, his five children, including his daughter, Amber Montoya, and stepdaughter, Candi Smith, decided to close the doors on July 7. Candi said it was a tough decision made for legal reasons.

"It was for sale for quite a while," Candi said. "We kept it open just because Chris had it for sale and nobody bought it. Amber moved back in May and she was settling here to take it over. Unfortunately, on July 4, our dad passed away due to the wind storm in Wilson."

The Montoyas made the shop a destination of sorts for Central Kansas travelers. Chris remodeled the store inside and out, residing and re-roofing the building in metal. He built the cabinets in the store and did a complete overhaul, including adding a dining room. He even added a free air hose for travelers. The girls are unable to pin down a date of when all the work was completed, but Amber said it's a different store now from where they had their first jobs picking up dishes and mopping floors.

"The lake traffic, the semi drivers stop in for food all the time, and the gas plant employees come over and we cater to them, and just the surrounding communities," Amber said. "I've had people in Ellsworth, Great Bend, Claflin, everywhere, asking me when it's going to be reopened because they all miss it. People tell me they grew up eating there."

C &amp; V now employs five people, including Amber, who outright purchased the business. The store still features the basic necessities and hot food from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Business will remain as usual until after the New Year when Amber remodels the kitchen.

The grand re-opening on Friday, Nov. 1 will feature Amber's homemade biscuits and gravy for breakfast and smoked pulled pork nachos for lunch. The menu will also feature some new items.

discuss a proposed ¾ cent water sales tax. 
The sales tax question will go on the November ballot for Russell citizens. 

The
city is hoping the initiative will help secure sustainable water resources and
infrastructure. The city stated the current reality of their water sources is
scarce and limits progress for future growth and sustainability.


The forum next Tuesday will provide information on how the ¾ cent sales tax can
support water source development, infrastructure upgrades and ensure a reliable
water future for Russell.

Larned Chamber announces annual award winners

The City of Russell recognized Jeff Hogan as the recipient of the Employee of the Quarter for quarter three in 2024. 

Jeff has been a dedicated member of our team for 27 years. Jeff serves as our Golf Course Superintendent and ensures that the Russell Municipal Golf Course remains in pristine condition and ready for play daily. This often requires weekend and long-hour commitments to prepare for the summer golf season and tournaments. His dedication and commitment allows us to provide our community with a valuable quality-of-life experience within our community that is a draw not only for our locals but from visitors far and wide. 

Jeff’s leadership in his position of superintendent has allowed for continued progress even amidst budget constraints. The preventative maintenance and care provided for the equipment in his department is unmatched, providing for longevity and minimal costly repairs. Jeff is extremely budget-conscientious and considers the needs of the City as a whole when proposing the needs of his department. This big-picture outlook has served the City and golf course well. 

In his nomination, Jeff is described as a true working supervisor. He sets high expectations for his staff and works alongside them to ensure work is taken care of in the manner it should be, always willing to jump in. There is no task he would ask of his employees, that he himself would not take on.

Reflecting on her teaching philosophy, Miller shared, "I believe that ALL children can thrive and learn when provided a safe, trusting, engaging, and adaptive learning environment." Beyond her classroom, she is an instructional coach and mentor, playing a key role in professional development, literacy training, and teacher support across the district. While Jennifer Davis may be in her first year of teaching history at Great Bend High School, her career boasts 14 years of experience. Davis is recognized for her dynamic approach to engaging a diverse group of learners. Utilizing a variety of teaching strategies, including hands-on activities and collaborative learning, Davis fosters a classroom environment where students feel encouraged to explore and succeed.

Speaking about her approach, Davis said, "I find being able to help students who are struggling to learn or comprehend content to be very rewarding. When you work tirelessly with students... and finally see that spark ignite, there is simply no greater reward as an educator." Davis is known for her welcoming demeanor and her involvement promoting a positive school culture.

Great Bend Public Schools announce 2025 Teachers of the Year

Shattercane (Sorghum bicolor), sometimes called wild cane or black amber, is the same species as our domesticated sorghums. Some authorities give it the subspecies name drummondii to distinguish it from our cultivated varieties, though the taxonomy of this genus is often debated. What is certain, though, is that shattercane easily cross-pollinates with cultivated sorghums via insects and wind-dispersed pollen and also cross-pollinates with its weedy relative johnsongrass (Sorghum halapense).

Ecology - A native of Africa, this species is now widespread in areas of the world where domesticated grain or forage sorghums are grown. It is possible that sorghum arrived in the U.S. as early as the 1600s, but reliable records indicate that several documented introductions occurred in the early 1800s. Shattercane can be utilized by livestock as a forage, but it can accumulate toxic nitrates and prussic acid under certain conditions. Undigested seeds can be spread in manure applied to fields. Shattercane seeds can also be buoyant, allowing for dispersal in moving water. Birds and small mammals utilize its seeds. Shattercane is a host species for disease and insect pests of sorghum and corn. Yield losses from shattercane interference can be as high as 70% in corn and greater than 95% in soybeans.

Identification- shattercane is a warm-season plant growing up to 12 feet tall. The plant is quite variable in growth habits and tolerant of both heat and drought. The stems are unbranched, but the plant tillers at the base to form clumps. The leaves are generally smooth and display a prominent midrib. They can be up to 20 inches long and 2 inches wide. It has a short membranous ligule with a fringe of hairs at the top. The inflorescence is typically a loose panicle with several pendulous (drooping) racemes (branches). Seeds are dark brown and typically covered with deep purple to black chaff. The panicles, which can number from one to six per plant, produce between 500 and 1500 seeds each. A special layer of abscission cells at the base of the seeds allows them to easily dislodge (shatter) at maturity, giving the plant its common name. Management -to see the detailed herbicide management practices for shattercane control in soybean, sunflower, corn, grain and forage sorghum. To prevent the spread of shattercane seeds by harvesting infested fields last (where possible), thoroughly cleaning harvest equipment before moving to a new field, and controlling shattercane

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, from 6:30-7:30 p.m., the Great Bend High School Auditorium will host “Value Up” Parent Night, featuring renowned speaker and author Mike Donahue.

Donahue, founder of the motivational organization Value Up, has spent over three decades speaking to more than a million students worldwide, sharing messages about respect, self-worth, bullying, and creating a positive school culture. Donahue is known for his candid and engaging style, and his presentations have resonated with students, educators, and families alike.

During the school day, Great Bend Middle School and Great Bend High School students will hear Mike’s life-changing message, focused on helping students understand their intrinsic value and how self-worth impacts life choices. The parent event in the evening is designed to bring these important lessons home, providing parents with tools and strategies to better connect with their children.

Brock Funke, principal of Great Bend High School, shared his enthusiasm for the event, saying, “I had the opportunity to work with Mike Donahue at my previous school district, and I was amazed at the power of his message and the positive impact it had on students. Kansas Department of Transportation was putting together a project to redo the
traffic signals at the intersection of 10th Street and McKinley
Street. The project started in 2019, when the city applied for a Transportation
Engineering Assistance Program (TEAP) with no local match. 


On Monday, Great Bend Public Works Director Jason Cauley announced sometime in
2025, that project will get started.


"When KDOT put that out to bid, that project was originally estimated at $400,000," said Cauley. "Once the bids were out, it's up to almost a $1 million project. The state decided to go ahead and move forward with it."

Dedicated left-turn signals will be coming to all the traffic lights at 10th
and McKinley. Cauley said the improvements next year will also include new
technology with cameras at the intersection.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

STAR Bond project for improvements at the Great Bend Expo Complex and proposed

Great Bend City Administrator Logan Burns said establishing the district is
just the first of many steps in working with the State of Kansas for the STAR Bond.


"Next there will be a feasibility study done by the State of Kansas," said Burns. "That will give us a better understanding to explore the financials and STAR Bond sizing. From there, we will do the project plan of creation where we'll get into all the specifics and funding. At that point, we'll go to the state for approval."

STAR stands for Sales Tax and Revenue, where the bonds are repaid through the
increased sales tax revenue generated by the development. There are no
additional taxes charged to residents.


Troy Miller, Barton County Fair Association board member, said there are many
unknowns with the project as far as how it impacts hosting the fair.


"The Fair Board owns the Expo III building," said Miller. "We would definitely need to be a part of the planning before we would be willing to let go of Expo III to make sure this is going to work. We want to make sure we have a building."

The council reassured Miller that the Fair Board will be involved in future
talks.

"It's exciting to see some great new things going on, but there are a lot of unanswered variables that need to be discussed," added Miller. "We would like to be a part of that."

The plans for the project and cost are not set until approved by the
state. The Legends area near Kansas City and Boot Hill Casino in Dodge City are
examples of STAR Bond projects.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland Monday announced that $1.5 million is available for a fifth round of Historic Economic Asset Lifeline (HEAL) grants to revitalize dilapidated and underutilized downtown buildings in small communities across the state. These grants help close the financial gaps for communities striving to make their downtown districts economically vibrant.

Since Commerce launched the program in 2021, nearly $5 million has been awarded to fund 87 different community projects throughout Kansas.

“In order to succeed, brick and mortar businesses need the brick and mortar – and all the parts of their building – to be in good condition,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said. “With $20 billion of new private investment pushing into all parts of Kansas, HEAL grants give communities a chance to create their own momentum, turning downtown buildings that were once storage or pigeon roosts into stores, coffee shops and upper floor lofts.”

The HEAL grant helps communities bring revitalize downtown buildings as spaces for new or expanding businesses, housing, arts and culture, civic engagement, childcare or entrepreneurial activities.

Submitted projects must show potential to be economic drivers in the community and demonstrate that the space will be occupied by the end of the project. There must be proof of 1:1 matching funds from the building owner that will be required at the time of application.

The application opens Nov. 1 and closes Jan. 31, 2025. Awardees will be notified in April. Communities that received HEAL grants in spring 2023 or fall 2024 are not eligible to apply for this round of funding.

Domestic operators set another weekly all-time crude-production record last week, topping 13.5 million barrels per day. Cumulative production so far this year reached an average of just under 13.2 million barrels, more than six percent higher than a year ago.

The Energy Information Administration reported a big drop in US crude inventories. As of October 11, stockpiles dropped to just over 420 million barrels, down 2.2 million barrels from a week ago and five percent below the five-year seasonal average.

The Energy Department took delivery &nbsp;on another million barrels of crude oil at the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. SPR stockpiles now total nearly 384 million barrels, down from 618 million three years ago.&nbsp; Since April, the Energy Department has added nearly 20 million barrels, at prices twenty to twenty-five dollars cheaper than what we sold it for.

The US imports more crude then we export by more than a million barrels a day. But according to the latest weekly numbers from the government, petroleum product exports outpace imports by nearly five million daily barrels.&nbsp; That makes us a net petroleum exporter. According to EIA, US crude-oil imports averaged 5.5 million barrels a day, down from 6.2 million last week.&nbsp; The four-week average is down 3.4 percent from the same four-week period last year. Operators exported 4.1 million barrels of crude per day last week, up from &nbsp;3.8 million a week ago. The four week average is up nearly 100-thousand &nbsp;barrels a day from a year ago.

Rig Counts for natural gas in the US are down slightly, but the tally for oil rigs is slightly higher. Baker Hughes reports 585 rigs nationwide. The breakouts show an unusual increase in active vertical drilling rigs, offset by declines in both directional and horizontal rigs. The statewide total for Texas was down two while Oklahoma and Colorado were each up one rig.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil &amp; Gas Service is up two rigs in the eastern half of the state at 14 rigs, and up two in Western Kansas at 19. The tally is up 50 percent from last month but down about 13 percent from a year ago. Drilling was underway on two leases in Barton County and another in Ellis County.

Regulators in The Sunflower State approved 55 new drilling locations, the biggest weekly total since June of 2022. There are 45 new drilling permits in eastern Kansas, and ten west of Wichita, including one in Barton County and one in Ellis County.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 1,069 completions so far this year, down more than 300 wells from a year ago.Hurricane Milton prompted a brief scare in the energy sector, but gasoline prices in Florida have remained stable since landfall on October 9.&nbsp; A report from the EIA asserts that despite some areas with major disruptions, statewide pump prices have remained steady at $3.04 per gallon as the supply chain recovers. Florida is particularly vulnerable to price spikes brought on by weather events. The state does not have refineries or pipelines, relying instead on gasoline deliveries by ship. Several ports were closed briefly, but others remained open with restrictions. At Port Tampa Bay, where nearly half of Florida’s petroleum product supply is brought in, authorities report no significant damage to docks, but they did note some infrastructure damage, power outages, and road closures that might disrupt supply in the short term.The U.S. broadened economic sanctions in hopes of forestalling or softening military ones.&nbsp; The Treasury Department announced a flurry of sanctions against terrorism broadly and some enablers in the industry specifically. They're targeting everything from the "ghost fleet" of oil tankers currently evading Iran sanctions to Syria's drug-trafficking activity. It appears the collective effort may have stopped Israel from attacking energy installations in Iran. But they have not yet responded to Iran's missile attack earlier this month.The US used a Trump-era executive order to allow for sanctions against anyone linked to Iran’s petroleum and petrochemical sector.&nbsp; They've designated ten companies and 17 vessels as “blocked property” over their involvement with the Islamic Republic. Such tankers have been detained in the past, their oil cargoes offloaded and sold. Up until now the tankers themselves have been released. The West has been less successful enforcing sanctions against Russia.Big Oil has big plans for some big acreage. ExxonMobil hopes to increase output from its offshore holdings near Guyana by 18,000 barrels per day once it has completed risk assessments and received approval from local authorities. That's according to a top government official in the South American Country, where many big players are shuffling to drill in the latest international hot spot. The company currently produces more than 660-thousand barrels a day in the region.The month of September and the first nine months of the year have posted declines in total rail traffic, but oil by rail is holding steady. Weekly oil by rail shipments are up slightly over a year ago, but down from a week ago. According to the Association of America Railroads, rail traffic hauling petroleum and petroleum products was up six-tenths of a percent in the week through October 12. AAR reports 10,639 tanker carloads hit the rails, down from 10,814 tankers a week earlier. For the first nine months of 2024, total U.S. carloads of all commodities were down 3.3% from the same period in 2023. This year's oil by rail tallies have noted slight increases over last year. The trade group says grain and chemicals saw year-to-date increases and some record highs, but says coal and crushed stone posted notable declines.&nbsp;&nbsp;
