The Environmental Protection Agency has required each state to update their certification and training plans, which outline private and commercial pesticide certification in Kansas for agricultural producers.

Starting Jan. 1, 2025, there will be three options for applicators to receive certification. These include:

· Closed-book examination (We will still offer this option at the Extension Office)

· Attend an in-person training to obtain certification

· Complete an online training that will be released

The new options to be able to get a private pesticide certification will also be the same for a producer to recertify.

Wheatland Electric is once again proud to play a major role in fulfilling Christmas wishes for children in foster care through Saint Francis Ministries’ Christmas for Kids.

In addition to delivering a $1,000 Sharing Success grant to the non-for-profit organization that exists to provide healing and hope to children and families, 44 of our Wheatland employees and trustees sponsored 104 children for the holidays this year.

This is the eighth year in a row (since 2017) that our cooperative leadership and employees have opened their hearts to fulfill the holiday wish lists of foster children across our southwest and central Kansas service territory, including the following counties: Finney (30 children), Wichita (7 children), Greeley (6 children), Scott (20 children), Hamilton (5 children), Kearny (5 children), and Barton (31 children).

The grant funds will be directed to assist the faith-based organization with its Christmas mission. Along with family preservation services, foster care, and adoption assistance, the regional organization also offers several residential programs that serve those with mental health and behavioral issues, adults with intellectual and development disabilities, and even survivors of human trafficking.

Wheatland Electric sponsors 100+ children for Saint Francis Ministries

If you find that you are feeling a little more stressed than usual right now, you’re definitely not alone. Most people would say the holidays bring extra stress. It could be several things that include: the extra expenses. Angry in-laws. Exhausted and sugared-up kids. Cold weather and seasonal darkness. Final exams, sporting events and recitals. Absent romantic partners. Profound loneliness . . . Individually, we can handle each of these stressors as they come. But during the holidays, everything hits at once and can become overwhelming for anyone!

When we are stressed, we need to be sure we are coping with it in the best ways possible. When stress gets the best of us, we may turn to less healthy means of coping. Here are some ways to make the season less stressful and more fun.

The holiday season is a time of parties and other social gatherings. Remember that you don't have to do it all. Figure out what you really enjoy versus what you feel you’re supposed to do.

Focus the majority of your energy and time on activities that are fun for you.

Travel can be especially stressful during the holiday season. If you must travel, do what you can to make it as easy as possible on yourself. Try to get direct flights or at least minimize the number of stops along the way. You'll avoid the stress of having to rush from one plane to the next or having to wait around for long periods of time.

Many people complain about spending too much time in the car during the holiday season driving from one gathering to the next. This can be exhausting. If possible, limit your driving to one or two events that you truly want to attend. It's part of setting healthy boundaries and keeping a reasonable schedule.

For many, the holidays are a time of gift giving. This can be a lot of fun, but it can also be financially stressful. Go make a budget now and stay within the spending limits that you have set.

You're not obligated to spend beyond your means, and you will very likely regret it if you do.

4. Be responsible about food and alcohol consumption

Do your best to stick with healthy eating choices. Don't overdue the sugar. Moderation is key, especially with holiday treats and alcohol. Many of us succumb to the pressure to overeat or drink to excess during the holidays. But too much sugar messes up your natural hormone responses, blood sugar, insulin levels, and your brain’s neurotransmitters (the body’s chemical messengers). Try to stay within your usual guidelines for healthy eating and responsible drinking. Remember to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

5. Enjoy family on your terms and set boundaries

While it can be enjoyable to see family during the holidays, some people find extended family time to be stressful. Do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself. If necessary, take a break from the gathering. Go for a walk. Call someone you enjoy talking to. Take some alone time if you need it. And then you decide what you can handle around the plans that are made whether it is around traveling, food, hosting, and money spent.

Consider giving yourself the gift of time during the holidays. Take a break from rushing around, shopping, cooking, and cleaning. Set aside time to read a good book, watch your favorite movie, go for a bike ride or take a nap. Skip social media and screen time and spend more time looking in your loved ones eyes and choose human connection rather than the screen time. Your mental health will thank you.

The holidays can be especially challenging for those of us who have lost loved ones. Be sure to make space for your grief. Consider changing up your traditions to make your feelings of loss more manageable. You can also find a new way to weave in the memory of your loved one into your existing holiday traditions.

Get plenty of sleep. Eat regularly. Exercise. Get a massage. Meditate. Don't forget to breathe. And don’t forget to get outside and move. I don’t care how cold it is—put on some extra layers and just do it (or at least get into the gym). Exercise helps your body process and release stress hormones, and nature is important for our emotional and physical health. Here are some ways you can stay active during the holidays:

· Bundle up and go on a walk to see Christmas lights in the neighborhood.

· Get an epic snowball fight going with the neighbors (play is exercise too).

Nobody wants to be sick at Christmastime—and exercising, getting outside, and resting are all natural immune-boosting activities that will help you feel strong, peaceful and healthy.

Try and stick to your normal routine as much as possible.

If you know that this time of year is typically hard for you, lean on your friends and family. Talk to them about how you're feeling and let them help you set boundaries and practice self-care. KOERNER: Holiday stress

Last year, Fuller Industries Inc. revived the company’s traditional company picnic, and this year the event Sunday afternoon doubled as a Christmas party for employees and their families.

Attendees enjoyed food prepared by staff members, beverages, music provided by DJ Tim Messmer (aka Tim Tunes), bounce houses, games, a barrel train and other activities. Even Santa Claus paid a visit, taking note of the Christmas wishes offered by the children.

All of this occurred inside the company’s plant west of Great Bend.&nbsp;

“This is a wonderful chance to get together with co-workers in a relaxed atmosphere,” one attendee said. “It’s nice to celebrate the season with our Fuller family.”

Kids tumbled in the bounce houses and rode around the plant in the train, and kids and adults alike shot hoops, danced, played giant checkers and Jenga, and took pictures with Santa.

Many employees walked away winners after their numbers were drawn in the raffle.

“This is a chance for all of us to come together and celebrate the holiday season with our friends and families,” said Joe Mann, Fuller general manager and vice president. “Our employees are a family as well, and this was a chance to celebrate that, too.”

The gathering was originally planned for the late summer. However, production schedules and company expansions delayed it to the fall and then to the Yule Tide.

“When we brought back the family picnic last year, we realized how popular it was, and how important it was to our team members,” said Mann who helped cook the buffet-style fajita bar lunch. “We are a pretty tight-knit bunch out here, and this is a wonderful way to socialize and show our appreciation for all our people do.”

Fuller employees, families enjoy Christmas party

Twice the winnings from last year's giveaway but only 55 of the 60 instant finalists showed up Saturday morning at the Crest Theater for Eagle Media's $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway, presented by Bauer Computers, Mayo Money Management, and Moeder Plumbing Heating &amp; Air, your Bryant Dealer, whatever it takes. Kaitlyn Suss, an eighth-grade science teacher at Great Bend Middle School, was nearly one of those no-shows. Her decision to attend paid off as her lucky No. 29 ball was picked as the winner.

Before Saturday, Suss had never won a major prize. She signed up at the UPS Store/Westside Market.

"I was just returning an Amazon package," she said. "I actually just signed up the one time and was like, 'Let's just try it.' I never thought I'd win."

Suss was joined by her daughter, Paige, on the stage as she was announced as the winner Saturday morning. She and her family will now have the opportunity to spend the prize money at any of the participating sponsors in the contest.

"My husband already has a huge list of what he wants to spend it on so I have no idea," Suss said.

Terry Wagner, who registered at Eagle Media, was the other last finalist on the stage. New to the contest this year, all instant finalists who did not win the grand prize were entered into a drawing for a $250 Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Gift Certificate. That winner was Rita Engle, who registered at Boone's Maytag as instant finalist No. 54.

The landscape of USD 428 continues to change. At Monday's meeting, Assistant Superintendent John Popp confirmed for the board that three recent property sales involving the district will all be finalized by Dec. 19. Youth in Central Kansas can learn the basics of bicycle maintenance and repair and ensure their bikes are ride-worthy at a bicycle mechanic workshop set for 1-3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15 at the Barton County Fairgrounds Expo I building. The event is hosted by the new Golden Belt Badgers youth mountain bike team, which is sanctioned by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA).&nbsp;

Participants can visit various stations dedicated to maintaining and adjusting their bicycles, like setting their saddle height and what NICA refers to as the ABCDEs of bike maintenance:

“Our team is all about community and getting kids on bikes,” Team Director Ruth Schiller said. “The focus of the event is to add to the bike culture in the area and help kids keep their bikes rolling. We will have a booth available for more information about the Badgers Team and the opportunity to sign up.”

“The Golden Belt Badgers bike team will provide our local youth the opportunity to be part of a community-focused sport, one that encourages fun while engaging in skilled and safe trail riding,” she said. “Every participant will compete at the race events. The team already has more than a dozen certified coaches. A low coach-to-athlete ratio is necessary to ensure individualized learning opportunities and safety on the trail. Steinert said having access to a mountain bike team would have made a huge difference in his own childhood.

“I would have loved something like this as a kid, as the typical ‘ball sports’ were certainly not my thing, and never really felt like I fit in with sports like football or basketball,” he said. “If this were available, it would have drastically changed my entire junior high and high school experience. I’m hoping this opportunity will help young athletes see that there is far more breadth to the world of sports. And, maybe we’ll even help some adults see that growing up doesn’t mean we have to stop considering ourselves to be athletes.”

There is a heavy focus on soccer right now at the Great Bend Recreation Commission,
and the participation numbers show a big interest in soccer from the community.
The Rec finished up their instructional soccer classes for preschool-aged
children and shifted to adult and youth leagues. There are 37 youth soccer
teams this year. 


GBRC Sports Director Shane Sandberg said Executive Director Chris Umphres
suggested a change to the walls set up at the City Auditorium for indoor soccer
this year. To make the facility more user friendly during soccer season, the
wall on the west side of the gym was moved off the stage creating a walkway.


"We put some plates on the floor to anchor the braces down in there," said Sandberg. "Now people can still walk during the day all the way around. For our games, you can walk back and forth to the restroom much easier without having to go all the way around. It's been a big hit."

The Rec also has five adult women’s teams for soccer this year. There are seven
adult men’s teams. Sandberg said soccer games run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays
and again from 12:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

The December WILD program will take place on Thursday at 10 a.m.&nbsp;in the KWEC Classroom. Participants will learn more about the animals behind common tracks and will have the opportunity to make a plaster track ornament to take home.

Weather permitting, participants will look for tracks and evidence of Cheyenne Bottom's winter residents along the nature trail. WILD is a monthly series for school-age kids and their families. The mission is to get kids outside exploring and off their devices. No registration is required for this free activity.&nbsp;

Then, on Friday from 1-3:30 p.m., participants can experience the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math of winter trees through a variety of hands-on interactive activities.&nbsp;Come out for an afternoon of adventure, a come-and-go event.

Technology - Create your own spinning Christmas tree to take home. The simple electronics of this project will wow your kids until they go back to school. In a bonus technology station, we'll explore our Cheyenne Bottoms Chronolog, following a time-lapse of one particular tree in the marsh.

Engineering - Use a hammer, wood, nails, wheels, and axles to construct the classic truck carrying a tree.

Math - Learn how to measure the height and diameter of a tree and understand how much lumber can be harvested.

Take home STEM kit - Continue the learning fun at home. Get a special STEM kit to grow your own crystal tree over your winter break.
