The new mini-pitch soccer courts at Heizer Park in Great Bend are already receiving good use as a large tournament took place on the feature last weekend. City Administrator Logan Burns said the security system with cameras is expected to be finished this week and irrigation started on the grass soccer field.

Finished with an acrylic surface, the mini-pitch system has received a few scuffs already, something Burns and city staff are trying to limit.

"There are definitely scuffs," said Burns. "We've had to chase a few kids off with scooters and rollerblades. I think somebody had a skateboard out there. Scott Keeler (Public Lands Director) and his crew have been a doing a good job of getting some of those kids off."

The city will soon place signs at the mini-pitch courts on items or activities that are prohibited.

Great Bend was awarded grant funds from the Land & Water Conservation Fund through the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) in the amount of $161,260 with matching funds from the city for a total of $361,260 to make improvements at the park.
