The Great Bend High School (GBHS) Vocal Music Department invites the community to celebrate a beloved holiday tradition as the A Cappella Choir presents the 89th Annual Vespers Candlelight Concert on Sunday, Dec. 14, at 2 p.m. in the GBHS Auditorium, 2027 Morton Street. Admission is free, and all are welcome to share in this meaningful musical experience.

Following Vespers, the USD 428 Youth Choir—featuring 65 auditioned singers in grades 4–8—will perform at 3:30 PM in the auditorium. The holiday celebrations continue on Monday, Dec. 15 at 7:30 p.m., when the GBHS Concert Choir and Madrigals present their annual Christmas concert.

A Season Marked by Dedication, Growth, and Extraordinary Effort As the holiday performance season approaches, GBHS vocal music students have already completed an impressive stretch of work showcasing their commitment to the musical arts. After presenting their Fall Concert on October 29, students jumped quickly into a major event on November 12 when GBHS hosted internationally recognized composer, conductor, and clinician Dr. Z. Randall Stroope for the inaugural Spiritu Choral Collective. Ten schools participated, with support from local sponsors and the tireless efforts of GBHS singers.

In the short weeks that followed, GBHS choirs balanced in-class rehearsals, Thanksgiving break, and a busy schedule of Madrigal noon-hour performances, along with district and state honor choir auditions, during which 15 students were selected and participated in two separate Saturday events. Students also spent weekends supporting the program through fundraising—garage sales, homemade pies, poinsettia sales, Rent-A-Student opportunities, and more.

“The students involved in musical arts are much like three-sport athletes,” said Susan Stambaugh, GBHS Vocal Music Director. “They commit to a full year of rehearsals, performances, memorization of collegiate-level literature, and community service through music. I’m proud of how hard they work, how much they juggle, and what they accomplish together.”

Stambaugh expressed gratitude for the many ways the community supports the program—from attending concerts and inviting students to perform, to participating in fundraisers and Rent-A-Student opportunities.

“Sometimes the value of the arts is only measured by ratings or scores,” Stambaugh added. “But our students understand that their worth goes far beyond that. Dr. Stroope reinforced that they are dedicated, talented, and exceptionally well-prepared. And they notice every act of support—your attendance, your applause, your kind words. We are grateful.”

A Tradition That Shines Bright The Vespers Candlelight Concert dates back to 1936 and remains one of Great Bend’s longest-standing holiday traditions. Each year, the ceremony brings together generations, honors the legacy of vocal excellence, and reflects the heart of the season.

“We look forward to sharing our candlelit musical tradition with the community,” Stambaugh said. “After such a busy and rewarding fall, the students are excited to celebrate with you this Sunday.”

Wheat Scoop: Build a family tradition baking with wheat

Preliminary estimates reported by the Labor Market Information (LMI) division of the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show a seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 3.8% in September. This is unchanged from 3.8% in August and unchanged from 3.8% in September 2024. The labor force participation rate for Kansas increased to 67.1% in September, according to a media release from KDOL.

The unemployment rate in Barton County is down from&nbsp;4.2 percent in August to 3.6 percent. The rate in Pawnee County jumped to 3.9 percent in August but is now down to 3.1 percent.

Seasonally adjusted job estimates for Kansas indicate total nonfarm payroll employment decreased by 300 from August. Total nonfarm includes private sector and government employers. Private sector jobs decreased by 2,000 over the month, while government increased by 1,700. The largest job gains in the private sector were in&nbsp;financial activities&nbsp;(+600 jobs). The largest decrease was in professional and business services&nbsp;(-2,300 jobs).

Since September 2024 Kansas’ seasonally adjusted total nonfarm jobs have decreased by 1,700. This change is due to a decrease of 2,500 private sector jobs and an increase of 800 government jobs.

Technical Note: This statement includes nonfarm jobs and labor force estimates for September 2025, which are produced using data from two monthly surveys. Data for nonfarm job estimates is collected through a survey of employers while the main input for labor force estimates is a survey of households. The City of Great Bend is implementing temporary water conservation measures at the Great Bend Airport Industrial Complex due to a pump failure in the system that serves the Industrial Area. City crews are working diligently to repair the equipment and restore full operating capacity as quickly as possible.

The issue is isolated to the Airport Industrial Complex and does not affect the city of Great Bend’s municipal water supply, public safety, residential service, or community water usage. The pump failure occurred on a dedicated system that serves only the Industrial Complex, and all other city water systems are operating normally with no shortages or restrictions.

“We want to reassure residents that the City’s water supply remains strong and fully operational,” said Director of Public Utilities Darren Doonan. “The conservation measures are limited to the Airport Industrial Complex while repairs are underway. There is no impact to drinking water production, distribution or availability within the City of Great Bend.”

Businesses within the Industrial Complex may experience temporary limitations and will require reduced usage until the repairs are completed. Crews are prioritizing the repair to minimize disruption and restore full service promptly. The city of Great Bend will continue to update affected users as progress is made.

Industrial users can support conservation efforts by limiting non-essential water activities, repairing leaks or equipment issues promptly, reducing wash-down and cooling water where possible and reusing process water when feasible. Adjusting operations to minimize peak demand and ensuring employees follow efficient water-use practices will help maintain reliable service until full pumping capacity is restored. These temporary steps allow the Industrial Complex to continue essential operations while repairs are completed.

Near-record December highs predicted for Thursday have pushed away most thoughts of snow and ice across the region. But the winter season is still upon us. Coming out of Thanksgiving break, area school officials had to make decisions whether or not to delay or cancel classes. During Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Khris Thexton said a new option is on the table for Great Bend public schools.

"You'll hear a lot of schools around us use a two-hour delay," he said. "A lot of times, that two-hour delay is for bus routes. They want to give a chance for plows to get out, snow to stop, get more light so the buses know where to go. For us, it's not necessarily an issue, but based on the number of snow days we had last year, you start getting to the point where you get a little nervous about having time allotted."

Students and teachers are required to spend a certain number of hours in the classroom each school year. Winter weather can throw a wrinkle into that schedule. That's one reason USD 428 officials often make the call the morning of a predicted storm.

"A lot of the time, you know right away if you're safe to continue or just call it good," Thexton said. 

Within an hour, the group has usually made a decision. If school goes on as scheduled, maintenance and lunch service crews are notified so they can begin clearing paths and preparing that day's breakfast and lunch. The district still has a calling tree so various buildings can be made aware of the decision, but technology has made the process easier. Public Information Director Andrea Bauer can release the information directly to parents and staff using various apps and through social media.

In the event of a 2-hour delay, Thexton said it will be just that. Classes set to begin at 8:05 a.m. would be moved back to 10:05 a.m., and teachers would also be expected to arrive two hours later than usual. School dismissal times would not be impacted, though the morning session at Little Panthers Preschool would be canceled in full.

Coming out of Thanksgiving break, area school officials had to make decisions whether or not to delay or cancel classes. Metropolitan Ballet presents 'The Nutcracker' at Barton Community College

Something unusual happened during the holiday season last year. The Great Bend Cookie Contest was held and perennial powerhouse Forever Young (Kids Resale), located at 1101 Main Street, was not among the top-three finishers. Up until that time, store owner Betty Hazlett prided herself on being among the top-three bakers, since entering the contest for the first time in 2020. She even reigned as champion two consecutive years when the unusual thing happened.

To set the baking universe right again, Hazlett re-introduced her winning cookie from two years ago, a Snickerdoodle with Cream Cheese Frosting, and she happily claimed the Great Bend Cookie Contest Champion crown, once again.

“Last year, I didn’t think I was going to win, but I figured I’d surely be in the top three, so I was disappointed when that didn’t happen,” said Hazlett. “It feels really good to be back as cookie champion, especially by bringing back our crowd favorite. People want me to bake and sell more of these cookies to them; that’s how good they are.”

The 17th Annual Great Bend Cookie Contest was held in downtown Great Bend on Nov. 29 during a windy and cold Small Business Saturday. Forever Young led the cookie judges voting with 53 votes. Rosewood Furniture Gallery finished runner-up with 29 votes, serving its Christmas Cookie. Third place with 23 votes went to Kustom Floor Designs, serving its Apple Fritter Cookie.

Around Halloween, Hazlett made her decision to bake her Snickerdoodle again for this year’s contest. She then snagged an extra advantage by bringing back her veteran baking team of daughters Rachelle Hapes and Tara Hazlett. They prepared and froze the dough a few weeks earlier, then on “Bake Friday” the skilled team baked and frosted Snickerdoodles for 5 1/2 hours.

“It’s a lot of work, but it’s been really fun to do this every year,” said Hazlett. “It’s become tradition. My family enjoys getting together and baking. Some years it gets hectic when we don’t know what cookie we’re baking. It was much easier this year, though, because we’ve baked this cookie before.”

In what has become a post-Thanksgiving tradition, more than 200 cookie judges donated at least $5 for a cookie bracelet, which allowed them to visit 10 Great Bend businesses and taste cookies before voting on their favorite one. This year, $1,020 was raised and went to the Community Food Bank of Barton County to help feed those in need during the holiday season and beyond.

Businesses participating in this year’s Great Bend Cookie Contest with Forever Young, Rosewood Furniture Gallery (Cookie Headquarters) and Kustom Floor Designs were The Beauty Bar Salon; Buckle; Happy Girl Flower Shop; Heart of Kansas/Ms. Pretty Pickles; Rosewood Bargain Barn; The Wright Place; and Rosewood Wine Cellar.

According to Great Bend Cookie Contest organizers, bragging rights for “best cookie” are a fun part of the event, but the true impact is reflected on the proceeds raised to help those in need, within the community.

““It was great seeing the variety of cookies baked for this year’s contest, and a special congratulations to Forever Young for earning the Cookie Champion title with their delicious Frosted Snickerdoodle, said Anna Hammond, business development director for Rosewood Services. “I am very appreciative of all the businesses participating in the cookie contest this year. Despite the wintry weather, we had a great turn-out of judges and shoppers for this year’s contest. We are especially grateful to be able to donate all the proceeds to the Food Bank of Barton County during this holiday season.”

As part of activities wrapped into Small Business Saturday, cookie contest businesses also donated prizes, which were awarded to cookie contest participants that afternoon with a Facebook Live drawing following the contest.

Besides delicious cookie and fun prizes, Hazlett said the annual event always brings shoppers to Forever Young, with several of them visiting her store for the first time.

“It was stronger sales than usual for us this year,” Hazlett said about Small Business Saturday. “I imagine that crowds for shopping would have been sparse otherwise, because it was so cold and windy on that day. But people were in here shopping, as well as participating in the cookie contest. I like the contest because it’s always good for business on that day. And it always brings in people who haven’t been here before. We’ll definitely be doing the contest again next year, but with a different cookie.”

$1,020 raised for Food Bank of Barton County; Forever Young returns as cookie champ

Once in a while we get asked, “how cold does it have to get to kill insects?” Perhaps it is important to understand why cold temperatures kill insects. Insects are unlike mammals and birds because they must generate their own heat (called ectotherms). Insects die when they are exposed to temperatures below the melting point of their body fluids. If they want to survive winter, they must avoid freezing or tolerate freezing. Over time, insects have developed several strategies to survive cold temperatures and none of them involve wearing fleece.

Some insects just move into human structures in the fall and keep warm until spring. A common example are the multicolored Asian lady beetles aggregating on and in houses every year. Even if they are protected inside, they will likely die before spring if they don’t get food and water. Some insects also migrate to warmer climates to avoid freezing. A classic example is monarch butterflies moving from Canada to Mexico every year. Sounds pretty good about now!

A lot of our persistent insects in Kansas have to overwinter outside, and two strategies have evolved to survive extreme conditions: freeze avoidance and freeze tolerance. Freeze-avoidant insects keep body fluids liquid and freeze-tolerant insects can handle the formation of internal ice. Wait a minute, what? I know…either strategy seems impossible.

The main strategy for insects living in the northern hemisphere, where we can have cold temperatures for long periods of time, is freeze avoidance. Freeze avoidance can be achieved a few ways. Sometimes insects enter a “dry” hibernation by getting rid of all the food and water in their body. That way, ice can’t form inside the body and kill them. Water needs food or dust particles in order to crystallize; water can cool down to -42°C without freezing if particles are absent. Other insects have a super waxy coating on the exoskeleton that protects against ice formation on the body. Amazingly, some freeze-avoidant insects also produce cryoprotectants, such as glycerol and sugar, to reduce the lethal freezing temperature of the body. So yes, cryoprotectants act like the antifreeze in your car. I can’t make this stuff up!

Most insects living in the southern hemisphere, where the climate is more variable, employ freeze tolerance. These insects can stand ice formation in the body. Some will actually initiate freezing their body at relatively high temperatures in order to prepare for a longer hibernation. An example of a freeze-tolerant insect is the woolly bear. [Side note: several winter festivals celebrate the woolly bears kinda like Groundhog's Day.]

No matter the overwintering strategy, all insects will eventually die if it gets cold enough. However, the lower lethal temperature is different for each species. Barton Community College has announced the hiring of Julie Bugner Smith as the Alumni and Events Coordinator, a newly created position within the Barton Community College Foundation.

Smith is a Barton alum, and one of her first projects will be to lead the launch of Barton’s first formal alumni program and help strengthen connections between Barton graduates, students, and the College. Smith will also help coordinate signature Foundation fundraising events and build relationships with campus partners and community supporters.

Barton’s Executive Director of Institutional Advancement Lindsey Bogner said Smith’s experience and passion make her a good fit for the position.

“Creating our first alumni program is an exciting step forward, and Julie’s knowledge, experience, and passion make her an ideal fit to guide this work,” she said. “We are thrilled to have her help us write the opening chapter of this new initiative.”

Barton alum takes on new position at the Barton Community College Foundation

“Our kitchen staff takes great pride in the meals they prepare,” Alvord said. “When we can bring in local ingredients, it elevates the quality of what we serve and reinforces our support for the community. It’s a win for our students and a win for local businesses.”

During her report, Alvord also noted that USD 428 Food Service is currently seeking 3–4 new team members. Positions offer family-friendly hours, a team-centered work environment, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on students’ daily lives.

Kansas man hospitalized after violent SUV crash

Great Bend schools once again partnered with Wheatland Electric Cooperative, Inc’s (WEC) annual Power the Pantry food drive to support the Community Food Bank of Barton County. Students from eleven area schools participated in the friendly competition, collecting an impressive 10,944 pounds in combined food and cash donations ($1 = 1 lb.) throughout the October event.

Thanks to the continued generosity of Gifting Forward, $1,500 in cash prizes were awarded to the top four schools based on the highest per-student contributions, recognizing students’ commitment to making a meaningful difference in their community. All donations were delivered to the Community Food Bank of Barton County just before Thanksgiving, helping ensure local families receive essential support during the holiday season.

With this year’s contribution, the 11-year total collected through Power the Pantry (formerly Cram the Van) in Great Bend has grown to over 103,000 pounds—more than 51 tons of food and monetary donations since the event began in 2014.

“This event empowers our local students to make a difference by supporting those in need, while teaching them the meaningful impact of small acts of kindness. Through their efforts, they experience how every contribution, no matter the size, can profoundly affect the lives of others,” said Alli Conine, director of member services and corporate communication for WEC. “All of this is made possible through the continued generosity and support of Gifting Forward.”

A severe funding imbalance and staff turnover are forcing the Central Kansas Community Corrections agency to realign its duties, possibly reducing offender accountability, according to its director. The under-resourced agency, tasked with supervising a high-risk felony caseload across a five-county area, is struggling to provide the hands-on, Evidence Based case management oversight required to reduce the likelihood of reoffending.

Brooke Haulmark, director of Central Kansas Community Corrections (CKCC) for the 20th Judicial District, said that the agency has been dramatically underfunded for over a decade. Her agency supervises an average of 237 felons every month, giving it the eighth-highest caseload in the state. Yet, it ranks 28th lowest in funding out of the state's 31 judicial districts.

"If we have the eighth highest caseload in the state... and are funded 28th lowest, something’s wrong," Haulmark said. "Being inadequately funded doesn't allow us to have the staff we need to make permanent change through efficient case management."

Size – The geographic size of the 20th Judicial District adds to the logistical challenges of supervision. Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, Russell, and Stafford counties combine for approximately 4,105 square miles; the 6th largest territory out of the 31 judicial districts. This results in Intensive Supervision Officers traveling six to fourteen hours per month.

Caseload – CKCC's four current Intensive Supervision Officers (ISOs) - a number slated to temporarily drop over the winter following one employee’s scheduled leave - carry caseloads ranging from 60 to 90 individuals per month for each ISO.

Turnover - The workload has fueled a 126% staff turnover rate among ISOs since 2024, a number Haulmark attributes, in part, to burnout.

Supervision Allowances – "We are unable to conduct all duties, such as monthly home visits on convicted sex offenders and weekly UA’s, and must see many clients virtually as the caseload sizes do not allow us to see them in person several times a month," Haulmark said in an Oct. 31, 2025, written testimony before the House Select Committee on Government Oversight. Today she adds that officers average only about 15 minutes of face-to-face time with each client, severely limiting the agency's ability to conduct effective case management.

Increased risk from prison departures

The district’s caseload risk profile is increasing due to the high number of individuals diverting from incarceration. Since July 1, CKCC has seen an increase in presumptive prison cases. This means new felony offenders were granted a judicial departure to community supervision instead of prison time.

While this saves taxpayers money—community supervision costs approximately $9.78 per day compared to over $101.00 per day for prison—it places a heavy burden on the understaffed local agency.

 </figure>The fight for funding equityThe current funding system, governed by a state grant under the 1978 Kansas Community Corrections Act, has long been criticized by under-funded agencies as inequitable.In an effort to fix the issue, the Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) and the Community Corrections Association recently developed a new funding formula designed to be more transparent and equitable by considering factors such as caseload, travel costs, and turnover rates. However, this proposal was quickly derailed."[Agencies] who receive substantial funding don’t want the formula to change" Haulmark said, referring to districts slated to receive less money under the now-cancelled update. Sedgwick County, the one-county 18th Judicial District, testified before the House Select Committee on Government Oversight committee on Nov. 3, 2025, asking that the current formula stand. If there’s no change in the funding formula, Sedgwick – one of the highest funded counties in Kansas – may receive $5.4 million so that their ISO’s can supervise an average caseload of 950 clients.In comparison, CKCC will receive a fraction of that at $807,892.86 while supervising an average of 237 clients.Sedgwick County has an average client support funding level of $5,684.21. CKCC has an average of $3,408.83. “Why? We are mandated to offer the same programming”, said Haulmark.“Why?” is the reason Haulmark urges citizens to contact their state representatives to address the disparity that has plagued the 20th Judicial District for over a decade."If taxpayers would reach out to their local legislators... perhaps they would pay attention to what is not a new issue here by any means," Haulmark stated. "The difference may be that now we have substantial numbers to prove it."“TELL YOUR LEGISLATOR”Haulmark summarized the problem saying – tell your legislator this – “Central Kansas Community Corrections, covering the 6th largest judicial district territory in Kansas - approximately 4,105 square miles in Barton, Ellsworth, Rice, Russell and Stafford Counties – receives the 28th lowest point of fiscal support, while having the 8th highest caseload. That work is done with one director, four ISOs and two support staff. CKCC receives a little over $3,400 on average per client while Sedgwick County receives almost $5,700.
