The U.S. is preparing to intercept more ships transporting Venezuelan crude oil following the seizure of a tanker last week. The operation had been planned for weeks, in the ongoing U.S. push to take down the so-called "Shadow Fleet," evading oil sanctions worldwide for years. This was the first seizure of a ship leaving Venezuela, which has been under U.S. sanctions since 2019. The seizure of the tanker, which is dubbed the "Skipper," caused at least one shipper to temporarily suspend the voyages of three freshly loaded crude cargoes totaling nearly six million barrels.

Reuters reports the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions on six supertankers that recently loaded crude in Venezuela, and on four Venezuelans, including three relatives of the country's first lady. It was not known whether the newly sanctioned ships were among those now targeted for interception.

Crude-oil imports are up more than half a million barrels a day from last week, and from last year, at just under 6.6 million barrels per day. Over the last four weeks, imports average about 6.2 million barrels a day. The Energy Information Administration says that's nearly eight percent less than the same four weeks last year. Crude-oil exports increase 11% to surpass four million barrels a day. The four week average is down a quarter million daily barrels from a year ago at 3.8 million.

US crude production this week is up 38,000 daily barrels to yet another all-time record high. The Energy Information Administration reports output of 13,853,000 barrels per day. The four-week average dips slightly from a week ago but remains over 13.8 million. Cumulative production for the year 2025 has now topped 13.5 million barrels per day, another historic first.

Strategic oil stocks rise by another 200,000 barrels as commercial inventories drop. EIA reports commercial stockpiles dipped under 426 million barrels as of December 5, down 0.5% from a week ago, but up nearly four percent from a year ago. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve now totals just a few barrels under 412 million, a five percent increase from a year ago, and about 200-million barrels shy of it's peak.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is down one gas rig but up one oil rig for a total of 548 active drilling rigs. The count in Texas is up two; New Mexico is down three. Louisiana is up one and Colorado is down one.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is 15 statewide. The tally in Western Kansas is up three to ten rigs. The last time we checked, drilling was underway on leases in Stafford, Gove and Finney counties.

Independent Oil and Gas Service this week reports seven newly completed wells in eastern Kansas, and seven west of Wichita, including one well in Russell County.

Kansas regulators okayed 18 new drilling locations this week, with four in Western Kansas, including one in Ellis County and one in Russell County. The KCC has approved 635 new permits this year, compared to more than a thousand by this time last year. &nbsp;The tally of Kansas wildcat wells drilled this year is down 23 percent.&nbsp; Independent Oil and Gas Service reports 94 wells completed in what amount to new fields in Kansas this year, which is down 28 wells. About 12% of the wells drilled so far this year have been wildcats. Total drilling activity is down 38% from a year ago.

An American company could soon take over sanctioned Russian oil and gas assets in Iraq. The huge "West Qurna Two" field pumps about ten percent of Iraq's crude output. Bloomberg reports the US government is backing a plan to transfer LukOil's stake to a US entity.&nbsp; Iraq's Oil Ministry last week said it’s approaching US companies to take over. Under current US sanctions, LukOil has until this Saturday, December 13th, to divest all of its international assets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Those who need addiction-treatment services now have another local option with the opening of the Stepping Stones to Recovery residential facility in Great Bend.

Referrals are being accepted for the eight-man, faith-based residence that is licensed by the State of Kansas.

“Too many people are outsourced to other communities,” said Charity Muth, Stepping Stones owner. “And when they are sent out-of-town, they could be on a waiting list for weeks or months.

“This new option offers the opportunity to stay close to home, which will help with re-integration into the community. This is just one more local avenue to recovery, which adds to the many valuable existing services in our central Kansas community.”

Plans for the Stepping Stones residence were intentionally designed for a small group.

“We value close relationships between clients and staff,” Muth said. “No one here will be anonymous. You will be seen, heard and understood. In some out-of-area facilities, you might go through a 28-day treatment program without building any real relationships.”

The new facility offers one-on-one interaction with staff members, which include at least one clinician, peer mentors, dietician and others. Currently, seven people are on staff.

“These men and women have years of sobriety behind them,” Muth noted. “They are doing this because we all believe people are capable of change. This is what drives us. Anyone can change their behavior if they are offered professional recovery services.”

Stepping Stones residents must pledge to support local charitable causes and attend the church of their choice.

“I understand the science behind addiction but faith makes more things possible in life,” Muth said.

Another benefit to the new option is the inclusion of family services.

“Addiction is a family disorder that impacts loved ones in a variety of ways,” Muth explained. “Since families inadvertently stand in the way of treatment success through enabling, support for the client and family is crucial.

“It is imperative for the family to get support to help re-define roles and behaviors, while establishing boundaries and improving communication.”

Muth emphasized that she is thankful for the local support she has received in this venture from many individuals.

“But I am especially grateful for Mr. and Mrs. Larry Kopke and their family,” Muth said. “I am so blessed to have people who support this effort to help people on their road to recovery.”

More details The facility is licensed by the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services and approved by the Kansas Sentencing Commission.

It accepts only residents who are sentenced by the court under Senate Bill 123 and have prior authorization that confirms they meet the criteria for this level of care.

The state statute provides financial resources for a certified substance-use-disorder treatment program to eligible adults convicted of drug possession, cultivation or distribution, and other non-drug, non-person felonies.

“Senate Bill 123 is phenomenal because it eliminates financial barriers to recovery programs,” Muth said.

Stepping Stones residents are required to participate in a structured daily schedule that supports cognitive and behavioral change.

· Daily attendance and active participation in the cognitive-based, evidence-based curriculum

· Engagement in programming that addresses the unique challenges of men in recovery

· Participation in lectures, workbooks, structured assignments and daily tasks

· Preparing meals and completing kitchen clean-up

· Housekeeping of personal and shared living spaces

· Full participation in all scheduled program activities

“Stepping Stones to Recovery promotes structure, accountability and personal responsibility in a supportive, faith-based environment designed to help men build skills for long-term recovery and successful re-integration,” Muth summarized.

She also noted that all existing substance-use-disorder treatments offered at the Stepping Stones office, 1916 16th, remain unchanged.

Stepping Stones to Recovery residential facility opens; referrals accepted

Last Tuesday, shortly after 2 a.m., Officers with the Great Bend Police Department and Deputies with the Barton County Sheriff's Office responded to a residence in the 300 block of Frey Street, Great Bend, in an attempt to locate a wanted subject. Upon the officer’s arrival, John Lynch, 48, was located. Lynch had outstanding warrants out of Barton, Stafford, and Kingman Counties. 

Subsequent to Lynch's arrest, a narcotics search warrant was granted for the residence. During the search of the residence, methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were located. Lynch was booked into the Barton County Jail on the outstanding warrants as well as the charges of Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Felony Interference with LEO.

On Friday, shortly before 5 p.m., officers with the Great Bend Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the 400 block of Chestnut Street, Great Bend, in reference to a domestic disturbance. Upon arrival, officers contacted a female victim, who advised that Dale Herzberg, 59, had threatened her with a knife. With the assistance of the Barton County Sheriff's Office, Herzberg was located at a residence just outside of the city limits of Great Bend. He was taken into custody and booked into the Barton County Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault Domestic Violence.&nbsp;

Picture the old elementary school cafeteria: plastic trays and metal silverware dropped into buckets of chlorinated water. The school lunch has changed a lot in recent years. Not only have dietary concerns changed, especially regarding sodium and sugar, but USD 428 Food Service Director Kristy Alvord revealed during last Monday's board of education meeting that rising prices are also a concern.

"Another regulation that's kind of a big one is the Buy American Act that we are having to follow now," she said. "Previously, my responsibility for the Buy American Act was really to create an Excel sheet at the beginning of the school year, noting every item that was a non-domestic food item, then just giving the exception of why I could not use it."

Per new United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) policy, districts must spend no more than 10 percent of food costs on non-domestic items. In two years, that figure will drop to eight percent. Two years after that, the number will be five percent.

"To ensure this new regulation is being followed, and we are compliant, now we have to track every non-domestic food purchase - the cost, the quantity - and write the exception every time we purchase something," Alvord said. "Now, it's a weekly tracking we have to do, and making sure we're not going over that 10 percent. It has added a lot of paperwork."

While food costs have increased across the board, Alvord noted especially significant rises in domestic juice prices. USD 428's vendor has eliminated non-domestic options.

"My apple juice went up $4.83 per case, and I get about 60 cases a week," said Alvord. "My grape juice is up $6.51 a case. Orange juice actually went down, which is a great thing. Food cost has been rising, and it's something we have to deal with on a daily basis, but this Buy American Act is adding a lot of cost to us."

Alvord said there is a small caveat to the policy change. There is a USDA-approved exception that states if competitive bids reveal the cost of U.S. foods is significantly higher, districts can purchase non-domestic products. Alvord is currently rebidding out apple and grape juice for non-domestic products that are cheaper.

As of Tuesday, December 9, the drought monitor report indicates no real change from last week overall with some continued improvement in eastern Kansas. The recent rains leave most of the state in very good shape heading into mid-December. The six-to ten-day outlook (December 16 to 20) indicates a 70 to 90% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and a 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (December 18 to 24) indicates a 60 to 80% chance of likely above normal for temperatures and 40 to 50% chance of leaning below normal for precipitation. A little warm but decent for wheat tillering. And we normally receive about an inch of liquid precipitation during December.

For the last two weeks we discussed the economic challenges crop producers are facing. This includes the international nature of inputs and outputs regarding price. We also discussed the differences faced compared to a conventional producer of products like a car company or other manufacturer. So how can producers maximize profits?

The profit equation is simple: Profits = Total Revenue – Total Costs (fixed and variable costs). Producers have no control over the price. They can take it or leave it. There are opportunities to forward contract next years crop. There are calls, put, and options along with other marketing tools. However, the way to maximize profits (or in some cases, minimize losses) is through efficiency. Efficiency is a very fancy way of saying to minimizing costs. It’s not that a producer doesn’t spend money but optimizes inputs costs and yields. You want to optimize, not maximize production as maximizing production isn’t profit maximization. The goal is to be frugal, not cheap. What are a few items a producer can implement towards this goal?

· Minimize to the best of their ability fixed costs that must be paid no matter your production. This includes loan payments, equipment, and other items. This can be easier said than done and challenging, especially for younger producers. The fewer your fixed costs, the more flexibility you have. The less long-term debt the better.

· Look at markets and make the best guess as to the most profitable crop combination. Then look at the cropping season outlook, your (APH) average production history and what it takes in terms of inputs based on your realistic yield goal.

· Producers can often save money on inputs by purchasing inputs during the offseason when prices are typically lower. Many seed companies give decent discount when ordering early. Do some homework and see what future prices for an input are expected to do.

· Know what you have in terms of fertility. While grid sampling provides the clearest picture, soil sample regularly using at least bulk samples. Know your pH, soil nutrient status, what you project you will need and proceed accordingly. Know the weed and pest history and plan accordingly.

· Minimize or eliminate tillage to conserve soil and water in addition to using less labor and fuel. And as best as possible, develop as diverse a crop rotation as practical for your area.

· Monitor and pay close attention to fields and address problems in a timely manner.

GBHS Basketball - No Video Stream Saturday @ Kingman Classic

A team-building exercise really paid off for Victoria’s Kara
Burkholder. Her company made a trip to Ellinwood that included a stop at Kansas
Earth &amp; Sky Candle Company. Burkholder became instant finalist No. 32 in Eagle
Media’s $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway, presented by Mayo Money Management,
Cornerstone Automotive and Tire, and Moeder Plumbing Heating &amp; Air, your
Bryant Dealer, whatever it takes. Saturday morning at the Crest Theater in
downtown Great Bend, Burkholder won the grand prize.

“I was really excited even to be a finalist,” Burkholder
said. “I had even reached out to some of my coworkers to see if they had signed
up. Everyone said they signed up but didn’t get a call. I was one in 52, but I’m
still going to head there because I felt like I have a good chance. Something
was just telling me to go. As we got down to the final 10 on stage, then five,
then two, I was just really excited, thrilled, and anxious.”

The $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway kicked off in October with
52 finalists picked over the course of two months. That number dwindled to 50
competitors for Saturday’s big giveaway as two contestants failed to check in. Burkholder
has some personal plans for her winnings, including new tires for her camper,
but she’s also planning to share.

“I think I’m going to get everybody on my team a candle
because we all really liked them," she said, "so I figure it will be worth it to share some
of the fun with them."

Bigger than that, Burkholder plans to give back to the Great
Bend community. Immediately after winning, she spoke with Dakota Tucker,
general manager of Eagle Media in Great Bend, about sharing $1,000 of her
prize. Mayo Money Management will help with that endeavor.

“Maybe that will help somebody in the community who really
needs it for their Christmas holiday,” she said. “We’re really blessed and
fortunate that it’s not a make-or-break us, but I understand that there are
people out there where it is a make-or-break season.”

There were other winners on the day. The final 10 competitors all made their way to the stage where they were presented with $100 via the Great
Bend Chamber of Commerce. Ry Roth, who was instant finalist No. 13 after
signing up at My Favorite Furnishings, was the other semi-finalist in the

Media’s $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway, presented by Mayo Money Management,
Cornerstone Automotive and Tire, and Moeder Plumbing Heating &amp; Air, your
Bryant Dealer, whatever it takes. Saturday morning at the Crest Theater in
downtown Great Bend, Burkholder won the grand prize.“I was really excited even to be a finalist,” Burkholder
said. “I had even reached out to some of my coworkers to see if they had signed
up. Everyone said they signed up but didn’t get a call. I was one in 52, but I’m
still going to head there because I felt like I have a good chance. Something
was just telling me to go. As we got down to the final 10 on stage, then five,
then two, I was just really excited, thrilled, and anxious.”<figure>

 </figure>The $20K Christmas Cash Giveaway kicked off in October with
52 finalists picked over the course of two months. That number dwindled to 50
competitors for Saturday’s big giveaway as two contestants failed to check in. Burkholder
has some personal plans for her winnings, including new tires for her camper,
but she’s also planning to share.“I think I’m going to get everybody on my team a candle
because we all really liked them," she said, "so I figure it will be worth it to share some
of the fun with them."Bigger than that, Burkholder plans to give back to the Great
Bend community. Immediately after winning, she spoke with Dakota Tucker,
general manager of Eagle Media in Great Bend, about sharing $1,000 of her
prize. Mayo Money Management will help with that endeavor.“Maybe that will help somebody in the community who really
needs it for their Christmas holiday,” she said. “We’re really blessed and
fortunate that it’s not a make-or-break us, but I understand that there are
people out there where it is a make-or-break season.”<figure>

Wild Great Bend Chase: Driver Hits 70 MPH, Loses a Wheel, Rolls Car Before Arrest

It’s been a busy week of holiday service for the Great Bend Police Department (GBPD), which hosted its annual “Shop with a Cop” event on Wednesday.

Sixty-seven children in the community came out to Walmart Wednesday afternoon to receive an early holiday present, 17 more than in previous years, thanks to the generosity of supporters.

"The Great Bend Police Department, together with the Great Bend Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #23, is honored to support the Shop with a Cop program year after year,” said Great Bend Police Chief Steve Haulmark. “This event provides a meaningful opportunity for officers to connect with local children and bring holiday joy to families who may be facing challenges. We extend our sincere appreciation to the community partners and donors whose continued support ensures this program remains a bright spot in our community."

In partnership with the Great Bend Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #23, GBPD hosted two shopping sessions at Walmart starting at 4 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Each child was handed a $75 Walmart gift card and was paired with a police officer to select toys of their choice. In addition, the GBPD provided families with food boxes, including a turkey, for enough to fix a meal up to 10 people.

Last Saturday, workers from Project Clean Sweep played an essential role by preparing the food boxes that were distributed to the families. Project Clean Sweep is a collaborative initiative between the police department and the municipal court that allows individuals to complete community service as an alternative to paying fines.

Forty-five grocery boxes were handed out at “Shop with a Cop”. Leftover boxes will be donated, with one each going to the local boys’ and girls’ homes, as well as two to the Family Crisis Center. Four remaining $75 gift cards will be given to children in shelters. 

On Tuesday, Dec. 9, Community Engagement Officer Gary Davis invited the public to take a Christmas-themed photo at the police station, drawing in 24 children. Stg. Davis handed out candy and posed for pictures in front of a GBPD Christmas Tree, adorned with blue tinsel, black and white ornaments with a GBPD hat as the tree-topper.

GBPD connects community with holidays outreach events

BARTON COUNTY—A Kansas man is facing multiple allegations after a wild chase across Great Bend.

Just after 10:30p.m. Thursday&nbsp;a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop a 1992 Oldsmobile passenger car in the 1500 block of Morphy in the city of Great Bend, according to a media release.

The vehicle had been observed speeding and running stop signs. When the deputy activated their emergency equipment, the vehicle shut off its headlights and attempted to flee from the officer. 

Near the intersection of 18th and Hubbard, a deputy sheriff attempted to stop the vehicle by means of legal intervention, the vehicle spun out but was able to regain control and continued to flee. 

At least two more attempts at lawful invention were made without success. The vehicle was reaching speeds in excess of 70 miles an hour, blacked out, never leaving the city of Great Bend. 

 Sheriff’s deputies were authorized to use whatever force necessary to stop the vehicle due to the danger to the public. The driver zigzagged across the city of Great Bend several times and at one point nearly struck the Great Bend police officer who was attempting to deploy stop sticks. 

Near the intersection of 18th and Baker, lawful intervention was attempted by a deputy and the vehicle again spun out, this time losing the right rear tire, wheel, and hub assembly. 

 Despite only having three wheels on the vehicle, the vehicle continued to flee southbound on Kansas Street and attempted to get back on Main Street at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Main. 

The driver struck a fire hydrant at that intersection causing the vehicle rollover one time into a building on the west side of Main Street. 

The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Trenton Berens of Russell was removed from the vehicle and taken into custody.&nbsp; Great Bend Fire and EMS were called to evaluate Berens, and it was found he had no serious injuries. 

During the chase the vehicle traveled through numerous yards and striking stop signs and property as he fled.

  The Sheriff’s office K9 Rem alerted to the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle while at the scene.

&nbsp;Berens was booked into the Barton County jail on requested charges of felony flee and elude, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer,  aggravated assault (non-LEO), driving while suspended, numerous charges of criminal damage to property, as well as approximately 14 other traffic violations.

 Berens also had an outstanding warrant from Russell County for violation of a stalking order. Berens has previous history of fleeing from law enforcement officers and given the disregard for the safety of others, the Barton County Attorney was contacted, and the Sheriff’s Office requested a higher bond be set. A District Court Judge authorized a bond in the amount of $250,000.

At least two Barton County Sheriff’s office patrol cars received moderate damage during the pursuit. The Sheriff’s office was assisted by the Great Bend Police Department as well as Great Bend fire and EMS.
