Veterans invited to enjoy free breakfast in Great Bend on Veterans Day

Fort Hays State University and Barton County Community College (BCCC) will jointly host an all-day event on the BCCC campus on October 28. FHSU Professor, Dr. Seth Kastle, will deliver the day’s keynote address at noon in the Community Room on the BCCC campus’s Learning Resources Center. Kastle’s presentation will focus on his journey through the military, deployments, his personal struggle with PTSD, and how he was able to channel his experiences into initiatives that allowed him to help other service members and veterans deal with the challenges of life as a military family.

Kastle is a Kansas native and a 1999 graduate of Kensington High School.&nbsp; He retired as a first sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserve after a 16-year career that included two tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq.&nbsp; As a 21-year-old sergeant, Kastle earned the Bronze Star for his meritorious service during the invasion of Iraq. His uniform is permanently displayed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma’s 95th&nbsp;Infantry Division Museum.

Kastle is also the author of the children’s book, Why Is Dad So Mad? A book he wrote to help other military families deal with PTSD.

The schedule for FHSU/BCCC Day in Great Bend will also include a campus visit from FHSU music and theatre faculty, as well as agriculture faculty, who will spend the day visiting classrooms and meeting with students.

FHSU academic advisors will also be in the campus library between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to assist students with academic planning and the four-year college selection process.

The day will conclude with a lunch discussion involving senior administrators from both institutions who will discuss current and potential future workforce development and academic pathway partnerships.

Kick off the shopping season with Great Bend Holiday Open Houses on Nov. 8

The Great Bend Fire Department has officially opened ticket sales for its 50/50 raffle, and is inviting the public to its third annual Holiday Extravaganza on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Great Bend Events Center.

Tickets for the 50/50 raffle run $5 per entry and can be purchased now until the Extravaganza by contacting the fire department at (620) 793-4145 or emailing sedwards@greatbendks.net. The winner of the 50/50 raffle does not have to be present at the Extravaganza to win. 

All proceeds benefit the fire department’s social and charity fund, which provides scholarships, Christmas presents for those in need, honor flights to veterans, and donations to organizations such as Kans 4 Kids.&nbsp;

"This event helps our social and charity fund give back to many local organizations throughout the city," said GBFD Engineer/AEMT Skyler Edwards. "Without this fundraiser, these donations would not be possible, so we really appreciate all who participate in our 50/50 raffle and come out and support our Extravaganza. We are excited and look forward to hosting another successful event this year."

Doors open for the Extravaganza at 5 p.m., beginning with a social hour and cash bar serviced by Dry Lake Brewery. Tickets for raffle prizes will also be available to purchase for $1 each during this time. Boots Style BBQ will serve dinner at 6 p.m., where attendees will have their choice of pulled pork, pulled chicken, or brisket to dine on with sides of cheesy potatoes and green beans. Halloween on a Friday is good news for a great many ghosts, goblins, and area businesses promoting the holiday late into the evening hours. For other businesses, the date is a little inconvenient. Dry Lake Brewing in downtown Great Bend will host its annual Pumpkin Smash event the Saturday following Halloween. That required some action from the city council Monday as City Administrator Logan Burns presented the motion.

"Dry Lake Brewing has requested a temporary extension of its premises into the alley and parking lot to the west of its building for the purpose of hosting its annual Pumpkin Smash event on Nov. 1 from 4 p.m. to midnight," he said. "The event will include food trucks and the pumpkin smashing contest. Consumption of alcohol and liquor is planned in that proposed space."

Dry Lake Brewing has been granted similar permission for the event since 2021. The council approved a pair of ordinances that will temporarily allow alcoholic consumption in that area. Monday's vote will also close the alley behind Dry Lake Brewing between Forest and Lakin Aves. from 4 p.m. to midnight, and close the city-owned parking lot at Lakin and Williams during that period as well.

Halloween on Friday will not impact downtown events in Great Bend. The Downtown Halloween Boo is scheduled around Jack Kilby Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Barton Community College will host its Haunting on the Hill from 2-5 p.m. that Saturday at the Fine Arts Building, and Great Bend High School will host its Halloween event from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (10/22)

With back-to-back record-setting seasons, the Great Bend High School volleyball team has been counting wins over the last two seasons. During Saturday's Western Athletic Conference Championships, hosted by GBHS, Panther Coach Shelly Duvall had to pick up something else: a player's teeth. Junior Alex Mayers lost the teeth in the final set of the championship match against Liberal, then returned to score the championship point

"They had taken every team to three in the beginning of the day," Mayers said of Liberal. "Right before the match, everyone was like, don't overlook them. We need to get this done in two.  What did we do? They took us to three, and we gave them everything, even my two front teeth."

Great Bend entered the title match riding a 14-match win streak. The WAC title would also help secure home-court advantage during this Saturday's sub-state tournament. The Panthers took the first set 25-17, before Liberal forced the third set by winning the next set 27-25. Junior Kya Behr dug up a ball midway through the third set. The pass was heading out of bounds when Mayers gave chase, diving for a one-armed save. The momentum drove her face into the court.

"The best part was when she rolled over and looks at me and said, 'Coach, did I save the ball?'" Duvall said Wednesday on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "Sports Day" program.  "Yeah, kid, you saved the ball. Saved the ball with no teeth in the front. Then I literally dumped her two front teeth into her dad's hands while they walked her off the court."

Senior Kimmy  Hofflinger, who appeared alongside Mayers, Duvall, and freshman Stevie Mayers on Wednesday's radio program, agreed it was no small feat to later re-enter the game and deliver the final blow. Duvall agreed.

"Seeing her sitting on the sidelines, then saying, 'Coach, I'm ready to go back in,' you can't teach that," Duvall said. "You can't coach that. That's just pure adrenaline and competition, and that's definitely what Alex showed. She had the whole team ready to go. Everybody on the bench was ready. How do you not win a game after that?"

Mayers' 11th kill of the match secured the WAC championship at 25-16. There was other good news. Mayers credits Dr. Larry Kutina with fixing the front teeth on Monday. The new ones, she said, look even better than the originals.

 Great Bend enters the postseason as the No. 3 seed with a 25-9 record. The Panthers will face No. 14 Valley Center (16-17) in the opening match at 2 p.m. Saturday at GBHS. 

No. 6 Andover Central (24-10) will take on No. 11 Emporia (21-14) following the Great Bend/Valley Center match. The winners of both of those matches will play for a sub-state championship. Last year's Great Bend team advanced to the state tournament for the first time since 2020.

Payment options while city of Great Bend's online payment system is down

After completing Barton’s Nursing Program and later earning her master’s, Shelbi Frees is now giving back to her community as a nurse practitioner in her hometown at Ellinwood Hospital and Clinic.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I grew up watching my mother care for people as a nurse, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” she said. “The most satisfying part of being a nurse is helping people. Nurses have the privilege of being able to spend a lot of time with their patients and build great relationships.”&nbsp;

Frees said the Barton Nursing Program prepared her for the workforce by combining classroom learning with hands-on opportunities.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The Barton nursing program has many lab hours built in, which allows hands-on experience using simulation mannequins so students can get comfortable before working on real patients,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“Once students have mastered the skills, they go into a structured clinical rotation in many different facilities, allowing for exposure to various conditions and specialties.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Frees said she felt very supported during her time in the program.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“The small class structure allows for more one-on-one time with instructors and improved learning as well,” she said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“My favorite part of Barton was being ‘home,’ seeing familiar faces, meeting people from far away, and still being able to get the college experience.”&nbsp;

Frees said the Barton program introduced her to people with many interesting stories and backgrounds.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“I enjoyed that the nursing program was geared to all different walks of life and people of different ages,” she said. “Some of my class members were straight out of high school, while others were in their 50s. Some of them were single moms working full-time jobs, while others were married or still living at home with their parents, but with Barton being a small college, you know most people and build relationships within a small group.”&nbsp;

Making a sound fiscal decision was essential for Frees when deciding to attend Barton.&nbsp;

“Barton was a financially good decision due to the low cost for in-county residents,” she said. "Tuition is much lower compared to universities, and there are many scholarships that can also be obtained. I was fortunate that I was also able to work during my time in the Barton nursing program, allowing more financial freedom.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Frees credits her time at Barton in preparing her for success in her dream job.  &nbsp;

“I 100% recommend Barton to those interested in furthering their nursing career as an LPN or RN,” she said. “The program is held in high regard, and I believe that it gives a better opportunity to those who want to be in the workforce sooner rather than later.&nbsp; It provides a great education and hands-on opportunities.”&nbsp;

Applications for the 2026-2027 school year are now open. The priority deadline for applying for the nursing program is January 31, 2026. Applications will be accepted through March 1, 2026. Barton Nursing alum provides care as Family Nurse Practitioner in Ellinwood

It’s been nearly two months since Norma Ramirez gave a testimonial at Recovery Out Loud in Great Bend, and she is still hearing from individuals, churches and other entities.&nbsp;

“I’ve had a lot of calls since giving my testimonial. Actually, the most recent phone call came in today (Oct. 15) from a church,” said Ramirez, 41, Great Bend. “They want me to share my story of recovery.”

This type of response is only one reason Ramirez is glad she started her road to recovery earlier this year and later shared with the Recovery Out Loud audience. There have been a number of other life-changing results.

Ramirez’ journey began when Amy Ferguson, program coordinator of Rise Up Central Kansas, drove her to City on a Hill, a rehabilitation facility in Dighton. She has been clean for close to eight months now.

“And on April 6 this year, I gave my life to God. I now have everything I ever wanted,” Ramirez said. “I have a house, a job and relationships with my five kids and 12 grandchildren.”

After she learned about Recovery Out Loud, which is sponsored by Rise Up, she decided she was ready to tell her story – out loud.

“This was my first time doing anything like this,” Ramirez commented. “I thought a testimonial from the heart would be a good way to grow in my recovery.”

Ramirez acknowledged she has a history of not being present for her family.

“They were there, but I wasn’t. My kids didn’t believe I would get clean. Even after three months, they still didn’t believe. Now they are so proud of me. I wouldn’t trade my precious moments with family for anything.

“The changes in my life are the result of teamwork,” she added. “On my side I have God, Rise Up and Recovery Out Loud.”

Ramirez, who has been seeing a local therapist, strongly encourages others to seek guidance from Rise Up or other community resource “because of how much this has changed my life. Get help before it’s too late.”

She leads a Spanish-speaking recovery meeting and is willing to hear from others who want more information or to set up a time to speak to a group. Her number is 620-617-0537.

“This is a family-oriented event, with kids’ games and Timbi Talks, a program designed for youngsters who have a parent struggling with addiction. We really encourage family participation.”

Recovery Out Loud was a two-day event this year for the first time, with a Color Fun Walk/Run, the Narcan March, interactive games, healthy snacks and information about local resources that support recovery and wellness.

“We are so grateful to all the individuals and agencies that supported this event,” Ferguson said. “It is always great to see neighbors supporting and uplifting people in recovery.”

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (10/21)

Healthy citizens are the greatest asset any country can have. In that regard, work at the Barton County Health Department never stops. Tuesday morning, Public Health Director Karen Winkelman opened her presentation to the Barton County Commission with the aforementioned quote from Winston Churchill, then explained what the health department is doing locally to increase services to residents.

"We expanded our operational hours, and we increased that accessibility to meet the community needs, with support of you as the board of health and as commissioners," Winkelman said. "We have a staff meeting every Monday morning from 8-9, and that truly is about the only time our staff is all together in one space, because after that hour, we disseminate and do our programs, activities, and visits, or whatever is required."

The Barton County Health Department is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, from 8 a.m. to  6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday. Services are offered during the lunch hour.

"Originally, we had tried some hours and we closed through the lunch hour," said Winkelman. "Surprisingly, my staff said no, we need to be open because it's too hard to turn people away who come in from 12-1, and we don't have nurses available to provide those services."

Winkelman also credited county IT staff for increasing the department's digital outreach. The health department now operates several digital platforms that can be updated with educational material.

"In the past, we would have to have posters pasted to the wall," Winkelman said. "Sometimes, it was hard to keep it updated and make it look nice."

White noise has been added inside the facility to help maintain privacy.  Approximately three years ago, the health department purchased a mobile pull-behind camper for outreach services. This year, more than 60 flu vaccines were dispersed to residents around the county who may have otherwise had difficulty getting to Great Bend. Outreach services also extend to area businesses, and once a month, the health department visits Barton Community College for an outreach program.

The health department recently purchased PurpleAir to monitor air quality in the area. Staff is still determining how to use that data, but an update on the health department's page allows residents to compare local air quality to other locations around the state.

Since 2016, the health department has collaborated with the Barton County Sheriff's Office for National Drug Take Back, which is scheduled for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the west side of the health department at Lakin and Kansas Avenues. To date, the organizations have collected and destroyed nearly 4,000 pounds of unwanted, unused, or expired drugs.

"Sometimes, it was hard to keep it updated and make it look nice."White noise has been added inside the facility to help maintain privacy. Approximately three years ago, the health department purchased a mobile pull-behind camper for outreach services. This year, more than 60 flu vaccines were dispersed to residents around the county who may have otherwise had difficulty getting to Great Bend. Outreach services also extend to area businesses, and once a month, the health department visits Barton Community College for an outreach program.The health department recently purchased PurpleAir to monitor air quality in the area. Staff is still determining how to use that data, but an update on the health department's page allows residents to compare local air quality to other locations around the state.Since 2016, the health department has collaborated with the Barton County Sheriff's Office for National Drug Take Back, which is scheduled for this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the west side of the health department at Lakin and Kansas Avenues. To date, the organizations have collected and destroyed nearly 4,000 pounds of unwanted, unused, or expired drugs.

New owners, new name, same commitment: Great Bend Floral cuts ribbon

A section of McKinley from Forest to Broadway will be closed on Friday, Oct. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. as a precaution for drivers as MyLawn! Turf and Tree conduct a large tree removal at the practice of Dr. Donald Beahm, ophthalmologist.

Located on the east side of McKinley, the tree’s extensive growth has created potential safety hazards prompting its need for removal.

Barricades will be placed around the area to aid detoured traffic. Northbound travelers will be redirected to Forest to Roosevelt, while southbound traffic is circumnavigated to Taft to Lakin. Lights will be placed in flashing mode if southbound traffic needs to turn east on to Broadway.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (10/20)

Runners, walkers and trotters are encouraged to sign up for the upcoming Sunflower Diversified Services Turkey Trot, which benefits people with special needs, as well as the Community Food Bank of Barton County.

The fifth-annual event is set for Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Great Bend Brit Spaugh Park Zoo. Those who bring non-perishable food items will not only support Sunflower individuals with developmental disabilities and delays, they will add to shelves at the food bank.

“Since this fun event is scheduled for right before Thanksgiving, we want to help those in need to have access to a few ingredients for a holiday meal,” said Cody Harris, Sunflower director of planned giving and community support. “This is one way Sunflower can give back to the community that gives so generously to the people we serve.

“The Turkey Trot has been popular for the last four years and we hope for a good turnout this time around too. The money we raise and food we collect can make a real difference in people’s lives.”

Participants can walk, run or trot to help Sunflower provide adaptive equipment, medical and dental care, and other services.

It all begins and ends at Brit Spaugh Park.Those who donate two non-perishable items for the food bank will be entered into a drawing for a Garmin watch.Age divisions for the 5K are: up to 14; 15-24; 25-34; 35-44; 45-54; and 55 and older. Medals go to the top three finishers in each division.The overall male and female winners receive a turkey. Fun run participants earn ribbons.“We encourage local and area residents to mark this on their calendars,” Harris commented. “Sunflower always looks forward to promoting this healthy activity that brings our community together.
