Have you heard of the Blue Zones? If you are familiar with these five places on Earth, you may know the secrets of the longest-lived people on the planet. Although these populations tend to live well into their 100’s, the amazing part of their aging process is not the number of years they live but the quality of life they maintain. In fact, most of these people are still active well into their 90’s. So, what is their secret?

The Power 9 Rule, coined by Dan Buettner, describes the common traits of Blue Zone practices that empower people of these regions to live long, healthy lives.

Move naturally. Contradictory to modern exercise and diet culture, people within the Blue Zones don’t go to the gym, run marathons, or do CrossFit. Their everyday lifestyles avoid mechanical conveniences that nudge them into moving naturally throughout the day. Walking is the basis of their active lifestyles. Walking to the store, a friend’s house, or work is the norm. People garden and do physical labor on a daily basis.

The key here is that regular, low- moderate intensity activity is achieved daily. This keeps their cardiovascular systems strong while strengthening muscles without overusing joints, tendons, and ligaments.

Know your purpose. People in Blue Zones have a purpose for their lives. Every task completed throughout the day is done mindfully and with intention. Okinawans call this sense of purpose “ikigai” and Nicoyans name it “plan de Vida.” Both translate to “why I wake up in the morning.” Knowing your sense of purpose is worth up to seven years of life expectancy.

Downshift. Stress is a major contributor to disease. It is directly linked to chronic inflammation that is associated with every major age-related disease. People of the Blue Zones have stress relief practices naturally built into their day. Adventists pray, Sardinians do a happy hour, and Greeks take an afternoon nap.

The 80% Rule. This Power 9 practice is directly related to healthy weight management. “Hara hachi bu” is the mantra said before meals to remind Okinawans to stop eating when they are 80% full. The science behind this indicates that it takes about 20 minutes for the brain to realize that the stomach is full. This small gap could be the difference between gaining or losing weight.

Plant Slant. Most of us know that the food we consume is the foundation of well-being. This is one reason why people of the Blue Zones maintain health so effortlessly. What they consume is plant-based, unprocessed, and grown naturally. Common foods include an array of vegetables and omega-3-rich nuts. Beans are their main protein source along with moderate amounts of fatty fish. On the other hand, meat is a celebratory food that is eaten about five times per month.

Wine at Five. You may be surprised that a ritual happy hour is part of Power 9. As a regular part of their day, Sardinians drink red Cannanou wine which is exceptionally high in polyphenols while visiting with loved ones. It is important to note the health benefits of this particular drink and the socialization aspect of this practice. This may be more influential to well-being than the alcohol itself.

Belong. In all of the Blue Zones, people identify with some sort of faith-based community. While Denomination doesn’t seem to matter, research shows that attending faith-based services once per week will add 4-14 years of life expectancy.

Loved Ones First. Being around family and close friends is incredibly important. Not only because of the socialization aspect, but because these close connections build relationships that foster trust, support, and stability.

Right Tribe. As the saying goes, “You become who you surround yourself with” is proven to be true. Studies show that smoking, obesity, happiness, and even loneliness are contagious. In Japan, the Okinawans have “moais” – groups of five friends who are committed to each other for life. People of the Blue Zones have favorable social networks that support healthy behaviors, and this creates an environment of healthy living.

So, there you have it; the nine powerful practices from the world's healthiest people. If you’re anything like me, you are fascinated by the research, but you are also puzzled by the reality of practicing the Power 9 in your own daily life. Dan Buettner explains, “The secret to longevity, as I see it, has less to do with diet, or even exercise, and more to do with the environment in which a person lives: social and physical. What do I mean by this? They live rewardingly inconvenient lives.”

Barton County Sheriff's booking activity (1/31 - 2/2)

Business owners are tasked with an obvious yet constant task…making sure
potential customers know where their company is located. In an effort to help
retail businesses, the Great Bend Convention and Visitors Bureau will create a
new shopping guide map. 

CVB Director Christina Hayes said the current map in
the visitor’s guide needs to be updated, and the new map will be animated to
showcase the shopping districts and the entire town of Great Bend.


"I feel like this will be a fun, new way to showcase Great Bend," said Hayes. "It'll be shopping, and we'll focus on certain areas on one side of this big foldout map. The other side will be the big map which will also have hotels marked and points of interests, like our zoo and waterpark."

The Great Bend CVB hired Lindsey Kernodle, a freelance
illustrator, to illustrate a map of Great Bend that highlights shopping
locations and areas of interest for visitors. Kernodle used to work as a
graphic artist at the Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita. She will be making a visit
to Great Bend this month.


Hayes was hopeful to have the illustrated map finished by the end of the year
to have available for visitors.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Great Bend creating new illustrated map to showcase points of interest

Leadership comes in all shapes and sizes. Lincoln Elementary School in Great Bend already has a student council for its older students but that left out some of the younger grades. During Wednesday's USD 428 Board of Education luncheon at the school, Student and Family Advocate Jose Arias introduced several student ambassadors to the board.

"It's all about elevating our leadership as much as we can within our student body," Arias said. "We thought a good way to do that and give them the power to empower other students and the staff is nominating them as student ambassadors in the classroom on a weekly basis."

Students are nominated each Monday. The goal is that every student will have a turn at being an ambassador but the position must still be earned. All grades, K-6, have an ambassador. Fifth-grader Brady Karlin and Jaylan Brown, a newcomer to the sixth grade this year, explained what it takes to be an ambassador.

"Something you have to do to be an ambassador is be kind, respectful, responsible, and safe," Karlin said.

"I help with small errands around the classroom," Brown said. "I feel like to be a student ambassador, you must be a leader."

Kloie Schmidtberger added ambassadors must be patient. Mack Elsen said ambassadors should encourage classmates to do their best, and Jasper Ryff said being an ambassador is all about being respectful and behaving.

Rosewood Services caretakers Judy Shelton, with 25 years, along with her husband Ken, with 15 years of service, represent the longest-tenured Rosewood employees who were recognized. Achieving 10-year milestones were employees Dan Haselhorst, transportation; Amy Kilwein, benefits specialist; and Tandy Webb, equine therapy riding instructor. Recognized with 5-year awards were April Burhenn, residential; Michael Dawes, public relations director; Victor Jacobs, maintenance manager; Traci Maris, case manager; and Lakota Werner, residential.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We’re always happy to recognize our employees who have shown a commitment over a long period of time to providing care and supports to our folks we serve with developmental disabilities,” said Rosewood CEO Tammy Hammond. “Employee retention speaks to the health and success of our organization. Each of the 10 individuals we recognize have displayed quality service as well as dedication to their craft. Public hearing request - Adoption of Redevelopment Plan &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; As part of the incentive package for Great Bend Lodging, LLC, a public hearing shall be had to consider adoption of a redevelopment project plan within the boundaries of the 10th Street Redevelopment District. On Jan. 27, 2025, the Great Bend Planning Commission reviewed the proposed project plan and adopted a resolution finding that the project plan is consistent with the comprehensive plan for the development of the city. The public hearing will be held on March 17, 2025.

&nbsp; &nbsp;4. Public hearing request - Creating a Community Improvement District (CID) &amp; Sales Tax with the District &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; As part of the incentive package for Great Bend Lodging, LLC, a public hearing shall be had on the advisability of creating a community improvement district and the proposed levy of a community improvement district sales tax within the district. The petition has been filed proposing the creation of the Great Bend Lodging Community Improvement District and the imposition of a CID sales tax in the amount of 2% (maximum) to pay the costs of the project. The estimated cost of the project is $22,960,000 and the portion of the project proposed to be financed with CID sales tax is $10,100,000. The developer estimates that the CID sales tax would generate $3,406,401 over the maximum term of 22 years of the CID. The CID sales tax would only be for this property. The public hearing will held March 17, 2025.

&nbsp; &nbsp;5. Finance software &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; A motion will be presented to approve the quote from Edmunds GovTech for finance software for $98,778.

&nbsp; &nbsp;6. 2024 CCLIP for U.S. 281 &amp; Highway 56 improvements &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; The city has put out bids for construction of CCLIP pavement surfacing improvements. Project limits are Main Street from the bridge to 2nd Street. Also on Patton Road from 10th Street to 9th Street. Venture Corporation is the only bid the city received for $477,328. This is a reimbursement project, and the State's participation is 90% and city's portion is 10%. A motion will be presented to approve the bid from Venture.

Great Bend City Council meeting agenda (2/3)

The drought monitor report as of Tuesday, January 28th is continues unchanged from the last several weeks. The six to ten-day outlook (February 4 to 8) indicates a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation. The eight to fourteen-day outlook (February 6 to 12) indicates near normal for temperatures and a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning above normal for precipitation.

Today, as we continue to thaw out from the snow and subzero temperatures, let’s consider the benefits of our winters. While we may not be thrilled about this weather, farming in a temperate climate (four seasons) has definite advantages over subtropical and tropical climates.

· While not typically as long-lasting, snowy, and cold as areas north of here, we are cold enough and long enough to avoid many problems associated with the climates of say the Southeast US and southern Texas. While we have had to stretches of very cold weather, overall, our winters have been milder, much milder, over the last several decades with warmer average temperatures and less snow.

· One major advantage involves pest control. It’s not that we don’t have disease and insect pressure, but it would be much worse without winter. Extremely cold temperatures help decrease the populations of insects and arachnids that do overwinter here. A bigger benefit is that certain insects that are more problematic in the South can’t overwinter here. They either aren’t a problem or they must move here from the south, the sugarcane aphis outbreak several years ago is a good example. Since that outbreak, their migration here has been limited.

· Certain diseases such as wheat leaf and soybean rust also don’t overwinter here and have to move north to here. It’s not that we never have a problem with them but it’s sporadic and generally occurs later in the stage of the crop.

· We are still a wheat state and the hard-red winter wheat we produce needs to be vernalized, exposed to a period of cold, to flower. The amount varies by variety but as we are colder than Oklahoma and Texas, we have more options. But we aren’t as cold as somewhere like the Dakotas where spring wheat is typically planted. And snowfall helps insulate the soil and protect the growing point from freeze damage. And as it melts, it slowly moves into the soil providing valuable moisture during a typically dry time.

· One more advantage is in soil structure, especially with soil moisture. The freeze thaw cycle here helps break up soil and produce better soil structure. It also helps physically weather larger particles and over time they will become soil particles.

One last advantage involves water use. Without winter, our need for precipitation and groundwater would be even higher in the western half of the state.

Great Bend Earth Day Celebration is back for its fourth consecutive year. Great Bend Zoo, Rosewood ECycle and Great Bend Dairy Queen have scheduled the annual event for April 26 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Great Bend Brit Spaugh Zoo.

Businesses, organizations and food vendors are encouraged to participate in the community celebration by contacting Great Bend Zoo Director Ashley Burdick at 620-793-4226, or e-mail her at&nbsp;<a href="mailto:zoocurator@greatbendks.net">zoocurator@greatbendks.net</a>. There is no charge to participate as a vendor. The deadline for booth sign-up is April 1. Great Bend Zoo can supply tables for vendor booths. In case of inclement weather, the staff will also offer indoor vendor space.

The come-and-go event is geared toward children, but all family members are welcome to participate. Great Bend Dairy Queen will issue a coupon for a free small ice cream cone to the first 500 youth participants that day. In addition, there will be giveaways to the first 500 children in attendance.

“We’re excited to bring this event back and build on our successes over the past three years,” said Burdick. “Four years into putting forward this effort, I feel like our primary education mission and message at the Zoo – to teach conservation and conserving the wild spaces for animals – is getting out there. We’re figuring out fun ways to educate people, and hopefully those ways are making a positive difference in people’s daily lives and in our community.”

Despite the winter weather during last year’s event, Great Bend Earth Day Celebration was well attended with more than 650 participants. That’s far less than the record 1,600 people who participated in the inaugural event held three years ago. That year, attendance was spurred by nice weather, combined with Smoky Hills PBS providing an appearance by Curious George, who met and mingled with children. Clifford The Big Red Dog and Smoky Hills PBS, along with Bart the Cougar were in attendance last year, but cold weather kept attendance down.

Still, a record number of 11 vendors participated in last year’s event, providing diverse and interactive experiences for participants. Burdick said most of last year’s vendors have shown an interest in returning, as they recognize the valuable opportunity to be part of the event.

“I feel like we’ve been successful in getting people exposed to different businesses and organizations who are active with green efforts in our community,” explained Burdick. “As well, I feel like businesses and organizations greatly benefit by having an opportunity to get their messages out to so many people in a fun environment.”

Great Bend Earth Day Celebration occurs a few days after the official 55th anniversary of Earth Day, which is recognized as the planet’s largest annual civic event. The national day is celebrated each year on April 22. Events are coordinated globally to the impact of 1 billion people celebrating the day in more than 190 countries. The official theme for this year’s Earth Day is “Our Power, Our Planet.”

‘Earth Day Celebration’ back at Great Bend zoo April 26

When Kendra Hagerman learned about the open director-of-nursing position at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital (PVCH), the memories came flooding back.

Hagerman worked there for nine years in several capacities and was eager to return.

“I loved working here but I left in 2020 to fulfill my dream of being a flight nurse,” she noted. “Now, I am so pleased to be back in this atmosphere in which our amazing staff strives for excellence.

“They support patients and their families, as well as one another; the spirit of teamwork is contagious. I cannot imagine why anyone would not want to be a part of this team.”

Hagerman’s goal in her new position is to provide support and leadership to the nurses and other PVCH departments.

“I want to continue to build this great team, while providing skilled and compassionate care through evidence-based practices,” she commented. “I also will do my best to live up to the hospital’s values of accountability, innovation, integrity, service excellence, teamwork and stewardship.

“In addition, a strong work ethic and professional attitude are so important as we care for our patients’ physical and emotional well-being.”

Hagerman’s previous positions at PVCH were registered nurse, Emergency Department supervisor, director of nursing, and administrator.

Her professional background also includes instructor of nursing at Barton Community College; assistant director of nursing at Larned State Hospital’s Psychiatric Services Program; RN at The University of Kansas Health System – Great Bend Campus in the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit; and Critical Care Transport for EagleMed.

Melanie Urban, Administrator at PVCH, commended Hagerman's qualifications, stating, "Mrs. Hagerman's professional background and alignment with PVCH's core values make her an excellent leader for our nursing team. Hagerman named director of nursing at Pawnee Valley Community Hospital

It is the ease of placing a bet and the bombardment of advertisements that worry Kevin Ford the most when it comes to the temptation to place a wager on a sporting event.

Ford is the Substance-Use Disorder director and Kansas Certified Gambling Counselor at The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway in Great Bend.

“Sports-betting ads are so pervasive right now; they are everywhere,” Ford said. “If you have a mobile phone and are on the internet, placing a wager is now at your fingertips any time of the day or night.

“Television ads are especially enticing because celebrities and pro athletes tell you how easy it is and how much fun you’re going to have.”

Ford shared a few Kansas statistics that indicate more people are calling a gambling hotline than before sports betting was legalized in 2022.

In 2022, state statistics report 263 calls, with 35 of them related to sports betting. The following year, 673 calls were made and 120 were sports-related.

“Several of these calls were made in the Center’s service area,” Ford said, referring to Barton, Pawnee, Rice and Stafford counties. “These numbers aren’t big yet but they are increasing and I predict they will continue to do so.

“The question I ask myself is ‘how many are not calling?’”

Ford noted that in his experience, “gamblers are intellectually aware that this has to stop but they can’t fight the uncontrollable urge to make that wager.”

Sports-betting ads suggest gamblers call 1-800-GAMBLER when they find themselves in trouble. The Problem Gambling Helpline on the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services (KDADS) website is 800-522-4700.

“I encourage gamblers to consider making that call,” Ford said. “The KDADS gambling team is available and they suggest that people ‘know when enough is enough.’”

Much of the treatment for gambling addicts involves talk therapy. This treatment is at no cost to the individual because revenues from casinos and the lottery are earmarked for this purpose.

“During treatment, counselors and clients look at that feeling of being powerless,” Ford commented. “In many cases, financial counseling also is appropriate because people ask for help when they get into serious money trouble.

“In addition, spouses sometimes don’t know what has been going on, which leads to anger and frustration.”

Gambling treatment includes the same techniques as those involved in substance-use disorder.

“Problem betting is akin to an alcoholic taking a drink,” Ford explained. “If you don’t have easy access to Gamblers Anonymous, please seriously consider finding open meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Narcotics Anonymous.

“Gamblers can learn about their addiction at these open meetings. This could be an important ingredient in their recovery.”

Ford shared KDADS information about the warning signs of problem gambling. They include:

· Sports betting is a way to escape from problems

· Withdrawing from loved ones or constantly checking on bets

This treatment is at no cost to the individual because revenues from casinos and the lottery are earmarked for this purpose.“During treatment, counselors and clients look at that feeling of being powerless,” Ford commented. “In many cases, financial counseling also is appropriate because people ask for help when they get into serious money trouble.“In addition, spouses sometimes don’t know what has been going on, which leads to anger and frustration.”Gambling treatment includes the same techniques as those involved in substance-use disorder.“Problem betting is akin to an alcoholic taking a drink,” Ford explained. “If you don’t have easy access to Gamblers Anonymous, please seriously consider finding open meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous and/or Narcotics Anonymous.“Gamblers can learn about their addiction at these open meetings. The Center’s gambling counselor cautions against problem sports betting

Girls' wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in the nation. Combine that with a rich tradition of wrestling and Hoisington, and it's natural a pair of sisters would want to be Lady Cardinal wrestlers. Sophomore Nevaeh Graves already has a state medal, and her freshman sister Trinity Graves has aspirations to do the same. But that's not why Nevaeh began the sport.

"Girls get bullied for their builds," she said. "I got bullied for my build, getting called a 'linebacker.' That pushed me to where, if I'm going be called a linebacker and look like a linebacker, I might as well put some work into it and use that strength against girls on the mat. Since I joined wrestling, I haven't been called a linebacker."

Nevaeh doubles as a varsity cheerleader at Hoisington High School. That comes through at wrestling tournament as she and her teammates dance and have fun during warmups.

"It's not good to go out and not have fun, not laugh, not experience the time you have there," she said. "The time you have in high school goes by so fast that you realize you're losing the time you could have spent with your team. We're losing two of our best girls this year and it's gone by in a flash."

But it's not all giggles. Nevaeh is currently ranked No. 4 at 170 pounds in Class 3-2-1A. She finished second in her first regional competition last year and went on to place sixth at state. At the Cardinal Girls Round Robin earlier this month, she needed just 22 seconds to pin Chaparral senior Taryn Meek, who is currently ranked second. 

"I went in, wrestled her, got her down," Nevaeh said. There was a point in the match where I was almost flipped to my back. I was like, 'I can't let this happen. I need to win.'"

Not far behind is little sister, Trinity. Also a member of a Crimson Girls Danceline at HHS, she's posted a 36-15 record with 26 pins in matches on trackwrestling.com. She placed sixth at the Kids State Folkstyle Championships and won the Hoisington Girls Corner Classic in December. She has finished third at her last two tournaments in Nickerson and Osborne.

"I don't look at any of the rankings," Trinity said. "If I'm wrestling a girl, I just go out there and do what I can do what I can to win. If a move doesn't work, I try my best to move to another one that will work. I'm going to keep on having the same confidence I have right now."

Both sisters have high expectations as the season winds down. Hoisington heads north to Russell on Feb. 14-15. Nevaeh will be looking for a return trip to state and Trinity will be looking to qualify for her first state tournament.

Couples looking for a unique way to celebrate Valentine’s Day or anyone who wants to learn about ceramics can participate in the Date Night Ceramics Workshop, a hands-on pottery experience open to all ages from 6-8 p.m. Feb. 13 and 3-5 p.m. Feb. 15 in the Technical Building, room T-151.

The workshop will include a pottery wheel lesson, allowing participants to create their own ceramic pieces. Each finished piece will be professionally fired and can be picked up by the participants after that process is completed. The event is designed to provide a fun and interactive experience in a relaxed, creative setting. No prior experience is necessary.

Fresh off citizen vitriol for rising property taxes during their 2024 campaigns, a fortified Republican super-majority Kansas Legislature began loading their prized horses into the starting gate of this year’s Property Tax Derby.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Kansas GOP leaders eye this as the final jewel in the coveted Tax Cut Triple Crown – sales, income, and property. In previous sessions, they successfully bet on both Governor Kelly’s&nbsp;food tax&nbsp;horse (Axe The Tax) and their&nbsp;income tax&nbsp;horse (Trickle Down) sired from the Brownback stud farm.&nbsp;

Elected jockeys have three levers at their disposal to determine the pace of property taxes in the derby. The State totally controls the first lever (assessments) and oversees county appraisals for the second lever (property values) which are really at the mercy of market forces. The most powerful lever (mill levy) is nearly all in the grip of local government.

Property taxes fund 60%-100% of local government budgets, but less than 1% of state government. Property tax revenue is the lifeblood for local services such as schools, police, roads, parks, transit, libraries, etc. with some hemorrhaging. Conversely, they mean virtually nothing to the State budget.

With that in mind, let’s handicap three GOP entrants while Democrats snooze in the barn.&nbsp;

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;“Cap The Tax” (SCR 1603) – Senate Taxation Farms first entry is a Constitutional Amendment capping taxable property values at 3% annually thus artificially controlling property value – not the free market. This well-intentioned concept has all sorts of unintended consequences. Said cap is lifted for home sales and improvements causing vastly different taxable values on the same block while discouraging mobility and investment for an even tighter housing market. Local budgets get squeezed by inflation over 3% but still could effectively make themselves whole by pulling their prodigious mill levy lever. Ultimately, voters must approve if it gets that far. Given the House killed a 4% cap last year, this horse may get stuck on the rail again.

·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;“Building Biscuit” (SB 35) - Senate Taxation Farms’ second entry would repeal the State’s paltry 1.5 mill levy that goes towards deferred maintenance of state buildings. This is the most local government-friendly entry because it does not jeopardize local revenue. Building maintenance would shift to the State’s general fund made up of income and sales tax. Without a dedicated mill levy, universities are rightfully nervous their proverbial can could be kicked down the road. Homeowners would save a whopping $22 annually on a $200K house. This horse has the best legs for a stretch run but little return for wagers.

· &nbsp; &nbsp; “School Levy Sugar” (HB 2011) – The entry from House Taxation Stables has a similar profile to Building Biscuit. Instead of building maintenance, 1.5 mills are wiped from the State’s 20 mills for local schools. Relief for homeowners is just as paltry. Ostensibly, local schools would be made whole through the State’s sales and income taxes. But it puts their can on the line instead of universities. Without Supreme Court oversight for a school funding case, this horse is drifting a little wide at the turn.

If these don’t excite everybody, look for late entries like last year’s prized thoroughbred – exempting residential value from the State’s 20 mill school levy, expanding the&nbsp;homestead exemption, OR the ultimate horse trade – Medicaid expansion.

To paraphrase the State’s highest-paid employee (Bill Self),&nbsp;don’t worry about the mules,&nbsp;keep loading the wagon and don’t crash local services.

Insight Kansas: Handicapping the Kansas property tax derby

The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is looking for sponsors willing to provide nutritious meals to Kansas children during the summer months.&nbsp;

A program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), SFSP provides reimbursement to schools, public agencies and private nonprofit organizations for food services.&nbsp;

Meals can be served free to children in areas with school or census eligibility based on free and reduced-price meal eligibility. Free meals enhance summer education and/or recreation programs. If your community already has a sponsor, find out how you or your organization can assist by providing additional sites, volunteers or activities.&nbsp;

The goal of the SFSP is to ensure children in high-poverty areas continue to receive nutritious meals when the low-cost or free school meals provided through the Child Nutrition Programs of the USDA are no longer available. SFSP sponsors receive reimbursements for documenting and serving healthy meals to children between 1 and 18 years of age at approved sites in needy areas. These nutritional opportunities help keep children ready to learn when school resumes. Seeking sponsors to ensure KS kids receive nutritious meals during summer

RICE COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of a vehicle fire in Rice County.

Just before 1a.m. Saturday, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a vehicle fire in the south parking lot of the Ellsworth Co-Op Feed Store, located at 1310 12th Road in Lyons, according to a media release from the Rice County Sheriff.&nbsp;

Deputies located a 1996 GMC Sonoma, owned by a Juan Vasquez fully engulfed in flames. Based on initial observations, foul play was suspected. Due to the nature of the incident, Fire and EMS personnel were asked to stage at a safe distance while a perimeter was established to secure the area.

The Chase Fire Department was dispatched to the scene and, once the area was deemed safe, successfully extinguished the fire. Rice County EMS was also on standby, but no injuries were reported that required medical attention.

At this time, no arrests were made and the cause of the fire remains undetermined. This case is under investigation by the Rice County Sheriff’s Office. For continuity of this active investigation, no further information will be released at this time.

UWCK Executive Director Charell Owings said the non-profit is partnering with TruStage, AllStaff, Chtd., and University of Kansas Health System-Great Bend Campus to create Boxes of Love to give to homebound seniors in Barton and Pawnee counties. "We're looking at probably doing up to 500 boxes for individuals who receive Meals on Wheels, anyone who gets ElderCare Home Services, anyone who picks up food at the senior centers, as well as nursing homes," she said. "We're really just spreading the love."Each box will contain a mix of fun and useful items, including chocolates and hygiene items. One of the most important items in the boxes is the handmade Valentine's Day cards. Owings said the cards can be a great project for daycares, classrooms, or youth groups."Anyone and everyone that has kids that need something to do, it's a great thing to have them do," she said. "You can also talk to them about why they're doing it and who they're doing it for. It can really open up a conversation with the kiddos as to how they can volunteer in so many different ways."Cards need to be turned into the UWCK office, 2000 Washington Ave. in Great Bend, by Feb. 3, or a pick-up can be arranged.
