Thursday's Red Flag Warning, issued by the National Weather Service in Wichita, for the Eagle Media listening area and the rest of Western Kansas, proved to be no joke. A semi blew over on the K-156 overpass near Claflin with no injuries reported, and large fires spread across Russell and Reno Counties.

Dry conditions and wind gusts between 45 and 70 miles per hour Thursday prompted the Red Flag warning. I-70 between Goodland and Colby was shut down several times due to poor visibility in the region.

A semi-truck blew over into a ditch shortly before noon. No injuries were reported and the highway remained at least partially open while first responders worked the accident.

A large grass fire was reported in Russell County just after noon. Mutual aid from several fire departments in five counties, including Great Bend, was used to help control that blaze eight miles southwest of Bunker Hill. Just before 4 p.m., the fire was controlled enough to send outside responders home.

An even more pressing fire burned approximately 500 acres in Reno County as of Thursday evening. An evacuation order was put into place for the area north of 56th Avenue near Hutchinson. That order remained in effect Thursday evening though officials said the fire was under control. No injuries or damage to homes was reported. USD 313 Buhler evacuated Plum Creek Elementary to Cross Point Church during the fire. Parents were able to pick up their students from the church.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (12/18)

At the time, Nov. 29 was likely the coldest and one of the windiest days of the fall. Those conditions happened to fall on the same day as the city of Great Bend's Home for the Holidays Festival. During Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting, Public Relations Director Addi Crites said the weather definitely impacted the event, but nothing can completely squash the Christmas spirit, including for the parade.

"We did have a great turnout despite the weather and the winds," she said. "Initially, we had around 47 entries, but some people did drop out due to the cold, weather, and for safety reasons. We still had 38 entries, so I want to say thank you to all the entries that toughed it out. We had some really creative theme ideas for our theme: Holiday Movie Madness."

The cold weather drove many to the Trail of Lights. The Great Bend High School Class of 1985 volunteered at Brit Spaugh Park that night and counted 158 visitors between 6-8 p.m. Since opening this year, more than 1,000 cars have passed through the park between 6-8 p.m. while volunteers are counting.

Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis also presented during Monday's council meeting, though her figures reflected the 2024 economic impact of visitors in Barton County.

"Just a couple of highlights from that was $53.5 million in visitor spending in 2024," Gaddis said. "There were 677 total jobs supported through tourism, and $5.5 million in state and local taxes because of those local visitors."

Crites also reported the winners from the Home for the Holidays Festival parade. Those were:

Two grass fires broke out Thursday afternoon in Russell County, keeping fire crews on the scene into the evening hours.

One fire was reported around 2 p.m. about 2 and a half miles south of Bunker Hill near Interstate 70, while another started around 12:20 p.m. near Lincoln and Pioneer roads.

Northwest winds were from 30 to 40 mph with gusts up to 65 mph.

Firefighters from Hays and Claflin, along with other surrounding fire and EMS agencies, assisted in bringing the fires under control.

he Kansas Corn, Wheat, Soybean, and Sorghum associations today announced the date for the 2026 Kansas Commodity Classic, the premier annual convention for the producers of the state’s four top crops. The event is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 30, 2026, at the Hilton Garden Inn in Salina, and will kick off at 8:30 a.m., with registration and breakfast prior.

The one-day event is designed to equip Kansas farmers with actionable insights on critical issues impacting their operations, including market trends, long-term weather outlooks, and federal and state legislative actions. The Kansas Commodity Classic is free to attend, thanks to the generous support of industry sponsors, and includes a complimentary breakfast and lunch for all registered attendees.

Featured presentations include a market outlook from Tanner Ehmke of CoBank, as well as an economics and policy session featuring Kansas State University’s Robin Reid and Dr. Jennifer Ifft. Ross Janssen will provide a weather outlook as part of the program. Wheat Scoop: Kansas Commodity Classic Set For Jan. 30 in Salina

Golden Belt Community Foundation just completed its 12th Giving Tuesday campaign, wrapping up and announcing the results during a Great Bend Chamber of Commerce Coffee Thursday morning.

Giving Tuesday started as a day for anyone, anywhere to give, and it has grown into the biggest giving movement in the world. Giving Tuesday harnesses the generosity of millions of people around the world to support the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Giving Tuesday inspires millions of people across the globe to show up and give back to causes and issues that matter to them.

This year many gifts were made to support 127 local charitable organizations and endowment funds raising a total of $973,952.78.

“This year marked GBCF’s 12th year to be a Giving Tuesday partner,” stated Mackenzie Mitchell, Development and Communications Coordinator, “and again this year we invited all charitable organizations in Barton, Edwards, Pawnee, Rush, and Stafford counties to participate.”

Mitchell further explained that there were a handful of new organizations participating, and that each organization chose whether to get any gifts received as a grant back to their organization or to use the gifts to build their endowment fund at GBCF. Many organizations will be receiving the gifts as grants to be put to immediate use supporting a wide variety of missions and causes.

“Today GBCF will be awarding over $900,000 in grants,” Mitchell explained.

The 2025 Top Ten All-Stars for Giving Tuesday are:

3- Prince of Peace Catholic Church $36,714.41

The Most Generous City Award, which was calculated with gift totals by zip code per capita. Pawnee Rock received the 2025 MGC award, and the foundation will make a grant of $1,000 to a program or project in that community.

In 2026, Giving Tuesday will be celebrated on Dec. 1.

Giving Tuesday harnesses the generosity of millions of people around the world to support the causes they believe in and the communities in which they live. The Great Bend Police Department is investigating a series of vehicle burglaries that occurred between approximately 10 p.m. on Oct. 31, 2025, and 3 a.m. on Nov. 1, 2025, within the city of Great Bend.

Preliminary information suggests 10–15 vehicles were unlawfully entered during this time frame. These incidents are speculated to have taken place in the area between 10th Street and Broadway Avenue, specifically from Harrison Street west to Sherman Street.

Investigators are attempting to locate additional victims who may not have reported a theft, as well as anyone who observed suspicious activity during the listed time period.

Additionally, a&nbsp;Jeep&nbsp;key fob has been recovered. The owner is believed to reside west of McKinley Street or near the Broadway Kwik Shop. If you believe this may pertain to you or someone you know, please&nbsp;contact investigators.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (12/17)

Let's give them a game plan. At the Dec. 1 Great Bend City Council meeting, new Great Bend Economic Development (GBED) Director Jason Kuilan answered questions from Councilman Gary Parr about GBED's role in the community, and about the status of the new Innovation Center on West 10th Street. Two weeks later, Parr is still not satisfied. During the Dec. 15 council meeting, Parr implored someone with longer standing within GBED to answer questions being put forth by an angry public.

"I wish somebody from GBED would come forward and answer the questions the people are screaming about," Parr said. "They're not asking anymore. They're upset. They're mad. They see what's going on. We've got a building out there, half-finished, with the roof blowing around on it, with the front entrance wide open on it, and we're short about $4 million to finish the project, from what I'm hearing."

During the Dec. 1 meeting, Kuilan explained the grant process and why construction on a new multi-million-dollar Innovation Center began before 100 percent of funds for the project were secured. He also reported the under-construction facility on West 10th Street in Great Bend would be winterized while construction is on pause, and that the goal is still to have the building fully operational by September 2026. Given Kuilan's month-long tenure with GBED, Parr wants answers from someone else.

"When the people are yelling this loud, 'What's going on?' somebody needs to step forward from their board," Parr said, "and just say, 'Here's what's going on, here's what we're going to do, here's our plan, this is the outlay, we're going to answer your questions.' I don't know why that can't happen."

Parr said answers would help quiet concerns from angry community members, but those answers need to come from people who have been involved with the project for longer than a month.

Water supply to rural residences and agricultural operations without rural or public water systems is usually obtained from a private well or surface water supply. In Kansas, more than 73,000 individuals rely on private wells for a water supply. When public and rural water systems that use well water are added to the private well numbers, 34.6% of the Kansas population relies on groundwater for their water supply.

Municipal and rural water systems must maintain water quality standards specified by local, state, or federal requirements; however, owners of private wells are responsible for the water quality of their wells. Permanent contamination of groundwater can decrease property values, affect human and animal health, and involve legal liability.

Testing water from private wells has shown that some wells do not meet the safe drinking water standards used for public water systems. The primary reasons for this reduction in water quality from private wells include:

· contamination sources upslope or near the well;

· failure to construct the well in accordance with current standards;

· inadequate well maintenance and service; and

· lack of protection from activities that risk contamination.

Following the guidelines for recommended separation distance and direction from potential contamination sources when locating a well can help protect private well water quality. When private wells are appropriately sited and constructed, routine maintenance is required to ensure wells continue to be safe. Wells that do not receive regular maintenance are more likely to produce unsafe water.

CAMPBELL: Private wells in Kansas - safe location and maintenance guidelines

Fuller Industries Inc. is joining forces with Cleaning By Jess and The Bin Wranglers to provide no-cost home cleaning services to area residents facing extreme living challenges.

​The collaborative effort focuses on restoring homes impacted by hoarding, bringing them back to livable, safe, and functional conditions. Cleaning By Jess has committed to restoring three houses initially, with plans to expand the program to more homes in the future.

​“Fuller is proud to be a part of this effort,” said Joe Mann, general manager of the longtime cleaning and janitorial manufacturer. The company donated a wide assortment of professional-grade products to the cause.

​“This is an example of how local businesses can step up to make a positive impact in the community,” Mann said. “We are excited to support Cleaning By Jess and The Bin Wranglers in their effort to make a difference in the Great Bend area.”

​The joint initiative aims to offer “dignity, hope, and a fresh start to individuals and families in desperate need,” said Jessica Lysinger, owner of Cleaning By Jess.

​"This kind of work isn't possible without community support, and we're thankful to stand alongside businesses, individuals, and partners who care," Lysinger said. "Our goal is to truly make a difference for families and individuals who need it most."

Fuller, Cleaning By Jes, Bin Wranglers partner in home cleaning effort

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) are launching a new safety campaign sharing safety guidance for western Kansas drivers traveling through areas with blowing dust and high winds.

A public service announcement (PSA) highlighting dangers in dust storms was created as part of the safety campaign. Dust storms often occur from December to April. The region’s flat plains, open agricultural fields, ongoing drought conditions and strong wind patterns create an environment where hazardous dust storms can develop rapidly.

“In Kansas, a windy day can turn dangerous fast. Knowing how to react properly can save lives,” said&nbsp;Technical Trooper Tod Hileman.

Drivers are urged to prioritize safety over speed when encountering high winds or sudden reduced visibility. The high winds can create sudden gusts and cause larger vehicles, including large trucks, RVs and trailers, to sway or lose control.

Blowing dust adds another layer of danger, with visibility capable of dropping to zero within seconds. These sudden “brownout” conditions increase the likelihood of multi-vehicle crashes.

Pull Off, Lights Out: KDOT, KHP launch Kansas dust storm safety campaign

The City of Great Bend recognized 13 employees for milestone anniversaries at its annual service award luncheon on Tuesday.

“We are very appreciative of these individuals’ commitment and service to the City of Great Bend over the years,” said City Administrator Logan Burns. “Their time, talent and efforts have greatly contributed to the successes of the city. We congratulate them on these hard-earn service awards!”

Four employees from the Fire/EMS Department reached their five-year tenure including Schlyer Cook, Christopher Kell, Jordan Elliott and Skyler Edwards.

Roberto Hernandez of the Public Lands Department and Zoo Director Ashley Burdick both completed a decade of service in 2025, while customer service representative Laryssa Howard marked her 15th year with the city.

Several members of the Fire and Police Departments surpassed 20 years in their roles. Battalion Chief Michael Reifschneider and Patrol Sgt. William Paden celebrated 20th anniversaries, as Battalion Chief Kevin Stansfield, Patrol Lt. Jason Settle and Fire/EMS Department Secretary Michele Hitschmann each reached 25 years.

Capping off the service awards was Laurie Bard, secretary of Public Works and Utilities, who celebrated 45 years with the City of Great Bend.  

The city extends its gratitude to these employees for their dedication and looks forward to many more great years of service.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (12/16)

Pie charts, by their nature, are created to simplify complex numerical data into an easy-to-see picture. Still, how the pie chart is split can be subject for debate. That was the case during Monday's Great Bend City Council meeting as city and county officials entered into a spirited conversation about pie charts related to property taxes. The debate culminated with Great Bend Mayor asking Chief of Police Steve Haulmark to remove Barton County Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson from the meeting. Council Member Jolene Biggs presented the motion that would allow the city to ask the county's permission to include another chart in the annual tax statements.

"My main concern is that the public, within the city of Great Bend, that pays property tax, understands what the property tax dollars are for the city of Great Bend that are going to be levied," Biggs said. "Granted, other cities, the school district, The Rec, they might like that also. That may be very difficult for the county to do, but I wanted to bring that up because I feel like that's important to the taxpayers, and it's important for them to understand that we're working hard here as a city to try and keep that down."

Hutchinson said the county offered an invitation to all taxing entities for a meeting in 2023. One of the agenda items was input for a pie chart. Hutchinson said the city of Great Bend backed out with less than a week's notice. Biggs said she recently reached out to the county for more inclusive tax data, but no one could provide the information. Barton County Treasurer Jim Jordan said he attempted to return Bigg's call twice, but no one answered. Hutchinson did provide the all-inclusive figures to each council member during Monday's meeting.

Of note on the 2025 graph is a slice indicating cities and the townships in the county are raising taxes to $10.45 million. A proposed graph from the city would show the city of Great Bend decreasing its taxes from a year ago, while the other cities and townships in the county are increasing taxes. While technically accurate, Hutchinson said the city's proposed chart is still deceptive.

"The thing that I kind of find hypocritical about this is that you put Great Bend with a down arrow, then you lumped all the other cities together to create an up arrow, when the one we already sent out gives three cities a down arrow and one city an up arrow," said Hutchinson. "So didn't you do the same you're complaining about?"

The county chart included a text box featuring tax information for the county's four largest communities. Great Bend, Hoisington, and Ellinwood lowered taxes by a total of nearly $350. That decrease was easily offset by a $32,000 increase by the city of Claflin. The numbers are easy to skew when lumped together in a pie chart.

"Well, actually, I wasn't really worried about the other cities," Biggs responded to Hutchinson.

"We're not really worried about you either," Hutchinson replied.

Hutchinson said he took the comment back before Schmidt began to explain that the conversation was Biggs' topic on the agenda, and she had voiced her concern.

"You going to shut me down, too, man?" Hutchinson asked Schmidt.

Hutchinson told Schmidt that's two First Amendment violations in two weeks, referencing the Dec. 1 council meeting in which the Great Bend Tribune's Andrew Murphy was not allowed the opportunity to speak per council rules regarding an agenda item.

"Chief (Haulmark), I'm done with him," said Schmidt. "This is my meeting. You can remove him. I'm not going to sit here and let him..."

Haulmark approached Hutchinson at the podium before Hutchinson and returned to their seats. Jordan reiterated why the county includes a pie chart in the annual tax statements, though Council Member Kevin Soupiset said council members are not immune to complaints from the public, either.

"I welcome any one of you up here on the board, the council members, to come sit in my office at tax time for two days and listen to the comments we get about our taxes our too high, and the belittling my staff takes from people," Jordan said. "This is one reason I did the graph, because I'm tired of us taking the beating for taxes."

Several council members agreed the information provided by Hutchinson may be better than a pie chart, but the board did vote on the motion presented by Biggs, which would allow the city to approach the county about inclusion of its own pie chart. The motion passed 4-3, with Urban, Davis Jimenez, and Gary Parr voting against.

Early in 2024, I began researching business gaps in Stafford County; specifically, industries where local demand was high, but services were either absent or located miles away. One need rose to the top quickly: diesel repair.

Despite the county having a large number of diesel vehicles - county fleets, farm equipment, trucking operations, and heavy machinery - there wasn’t a single diesel mechanic shop within county lines. Every year, hundreds of thousands of dollars were leaving Stafford County as residents and businesses were forced to travel elsewhere for repairs and maintenance.

As I started asking around to understand the landscape, one name kept coming up: Addison Willinger, a talented local diesel mechanic who had been commuting to Great Bend for work. Around that same time, Addison’s father, Troy Willinger, walked into my office to talk about his plans to build a diesel mechanic shop right here in St. John. The timing for grant support or donor outreach didn’t quite align. Business grants are rare and often require long lead times. Troy was committed to moving forward anyway without our support.
