After weeks of intense preparation, growth, and high marks at recent marching festivals, the Great Bend High School Panther Pride Marching Band is heading into its next performance on Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Neewollah Marching Festival in Independence.
The season brought both anticipation and uncertainty with a new director taking on his first year teaching, but student musicians rallied behind the fresh leadership of Director Mr. Trujillo and Assistant Director Ms. Alejandra Cornelio.
“I mean, if band was easy, everyone would do it, right?” said Mr. Trujillo on the physical and musical discipline required for their field show. “We do more than just sit in a chair and play. We memorize an entire show. This includes music, drill, and any choreography that we add along the way.”

Reflecting on the rigorous schedule throughout the fall, Trujillo added: “Yeah! We’ve been busy all year. We started band camp at the end of July leading into August. Then we hit the ground running. Between evening rehearsals and football games and some marching festivals, the kids are always busy. Sometimes I feel like we have a lot on our plate, but can we complain if the goal is to eat? Every. Single. Time.”
The effort has paid off on the field, building strong momentum as the band prepares for travel and high-stakes competition.
“As a senior, I could not have asked for a better final marching season,” said Head Drum Major Keegan Roblyer. “From the very beginning, when I heard the show's music, I knew it would be difficult, but I also knew this band could pull it off. After getting some superior ratings under our belt and all the hard work leading up to this moment, I know that we are ready!”
For senior band member Liliana Perez, the upcoming performance carries deeper meaning beyond competition scores. “Marching band will always be more than the ratings and trophies; it's about the friends and even family you come to love sharing the experience with,” Perez reflected. “Every milestone we've hit so far is a direct reflection of the heart this group pours into everything they do.”
“These kids have worked so hard,” added Mr. Trujillo. “They put in the time and effort, and know what it takes to be a member of The Panther Pride Marching Band. We hope that we represent our school, community, and families well! IT’S A GREAT DAY TO BE A PANTHER!”
