Call Monday’s Great Bend City Council meeting a night of
contention. Following a heated debate and vote on whether or not to use
unallocated salary funds for a one-time city employee bonus, the board also
heard from Great Bend Economic Development Jason Kuilan. He closed his prepared
statement by explaining the purpose of the new multi-million-dollar Innovation
Center currently under construction on 10th Street.

“The Innovation Center will serve many purposes,” Kuilan
said. “Primarily, it will address the region’s most pressing workforce,
education, and community challenges. We will accomplish this by strengthening entrepreneurship
resources, expanding education opportunities, improving healthcare access, and
increasing after-school programming and childcare availability. This comes
directly from the requirements of our primary funding source, the Kansas Children’s
Cabinet and Trust Fund.”

Kuilan also explained that the new goal is to have the
building fully constructed and functional by Sept. 30, 2026. Councilman Gary Parr
asked how construction of the Innovation Center was started if complete funding
had not been secured.

“Part of what I have learned in my short time is that, when
you get grants at the federal level or state level, they have certain
requirements, and you have to use the money by a certain amount of time,” said
Kuilan. “It was a risk that might not have paid off. We’ll see if we can finish
it in time and how we want to do it. But we got a lot of money that otherwise
we wouldn’t have gotten for a project that is so unique that nowhere else in
the country, I think, has a project like this for a city of our size. 

“If we wanted to use that money, we had to start and finish it
by a certain date. The risk was, if in that time, we would be able to raise
enough money to finish that. There were several grants that fell through, and
there were several donations from individuals that have not come to fruition
when there was a gap in leadership through Economic Development. My goal is to
close that gap.”

Parr also said Economic Development has received
approximately $2 million in city and county tax dollars over the last five
years. He asked Kuilan how Eco Devo can build the economy of an entire city if
it cannot sustain itself financially.

“I do know, as a business owner myself, that I look at economic
development and I think we should be financially stable," Kuilan said. "So I look at different
projects we have in the works, and I look at different things we can do to make
that happen. I would say I enjoy getting the money from the city so I can pay
my own salary so I can go out and do those things, but I don’t think we should
be dependent on any one funding source.” &nbsp;

Parr also commended Kuilan for attending Monday’s meeting
and answering questions, despite being new to the position.

Monday’s meeting, like all city council meetings, opened with
a public comment portion. The Great Bend Tribune’s Andrew Murphy told the
council he had sent members an email in an effort to get information on the
city’s role with Economic Development. Mayor Cody Schmidt informed Murphy that,
because Eco Devo was an agenda item for Monday’s meeting, he would not be able
to speak.

“He’s wanting to address Economic Development and Economic Development
is on tonight’s agenda,” Schmidt explained. “So, therefore, it is not to be
addressed the night of the action. So you can come back to the next meeting and
address us then.”

“That doesn’t seem right,” Parr said.

“It’s right there in front of you, Gary,” Schmidt answered. “It’s
been that way the entire time you’ve been here. It states right there, under
recognizing of visitors and announcements, you can read it yourself.”

Murphy asked if he would have time to talk during the
Economic Development discussion. Schmidt said he would not be giving him 40
minutes. Murphy answered that he was only planning on three minutes. Schmidt told
Murphy he could come back to the next meeting and have his three minutes, and that would be allowed to speak during Kuilan’s Monday presentation if Schmidt granted the
wish. Murphy was later denied the opportunity to speak.

“I’m not saying he cannot have the floor,” Schmidt said. “Economic
Development is on tonight’s agenda. When something is on tonight’s agenda, it
is not open to the recognizing of visitors and announcements. So he is more
than welcome to come back in two weeks and say exactly what he wanted to say
tonight in two weeks.”

Parr then asked the council what city funds given to
Economic Development have been used for if the city has no ownership of Eco
Devo.

“Do you not recall when they present a budget request every year
like everybody else we fund?” Schmidt asked. “If I’m not mistaken, if you want
to go back and look at videos, you two (Parr and Councilman Davis Jimenez) voted
in favor of accepting that money. So don’t point fingers at just me because you
guys have a final say when it goes to a vote. So, therefore, I’m closing the Economic
Development, and I’m moving on. Andrew, you’re more than welcome to come back
in two weeks and stay on the floor for three minutes.”

Wheat Scoop: 2026 Women Grow the Farm Conference scheduled for February

The Barton County Historical Society is being transformed into a winter wonderland of historical Christmas decorations and more than two dozen decorated trees. The public is invited to attend “Ghosts of Christmas Past” on Sunday, Dec. 14 from 1-5 p.m. at the society, 85 S. Highway 281, Great Bend. Refreshments will be served, and children of all ages may take a turn sitting on the lap of the Jolly Old Elf himself, Saint Nicholas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Admission for this special day will be free for all patrons. Donations are encouraged.

New this year is an extensive Santa Claus collection donated in memory of former executive director, Beverly Komarek. Additional gifts from the Komarek family include a suitcase filled with German glass ornaments, which now adorn a tree in the bedroom display near the front of the main museum. Rickee Maddox, society president, said, “We’re thrilled to be able to keep Bev’s memory alive by displaying her collections and greatly appreciate her family for thinking about the historical society to make such a donation.&nbsp;&nbsp;We do Christmas in a big way at the historical society and it is partly because of Bev’s vision through the years, and the donation of her treasured Christmas decorations makes it so much more meaningful.”

The Zutavern family feather tree will be displayed again this year, resplendent with period glass ornaments. It is made from a wire base, with dyed goose feathers for branches. A German custom, the trees were sold here in dime stores in the 1920s and 1930s. The feather tree is the oldest Christmas tree in the museum’s collection.

Another favorite is the Meyer family tree, with ornaments from the 1930s through the 1990s. Mrs. Meyer decided that she didn’t want to decorate a tree every year, so she had it hauled downstairs with the ornaments left on. But she added decorations every year.

Balinda Ochs has loaned her green aluminum Christmas tree this year and decorated it with Jewel Brite ornaments.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ochs also decorated another tree in the museum with many vintage ornaments and her mother’s hand painted ornaments.

First Church of the Nazarene, Barton County Fair Friends, Girl Scout Troop 11165, First Christian Church Disciples of Christ, First United Methodist Church Elementary Youth Group and Kids Klub and Xi Delta Upsilon have decorated Christmas trees throughout the museum building and will be available for viewing. The tree in the museum’s music room is decorated in memory of long-time volunteer and historian, Joe Boley.

The buildings on the historical society grounds have been decorated with lights and folks are encouraged to drive through the village after dark.&nbsp;&nbsp;If you look closely you might find Santa Claus peering through the post office window.&nbsp;&nbsp;The Lustron house also has an aluminum tree in the living room window that has a rotating color wheel that is lighted at night. Outside lights will be on through the New Year holiday.

Entertainment will be featured throughout the afternoon: 1:30 p.m. – Harlen Jerke, pump organ 3 p.m. – piano students of Lorrie Stickney 4:30 p.m. – Maggie McKain, pump organ.

Regular museum hours are Tuesday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the trees available for viewing through the end of the year.

Ghosts of Christmas Past to appear at Barton County Historical Society

Barton at Fort Riley student 21-year-old Chris Boothe grew up hearing his father’s stories about analyzing fingerprints and other evidence, so it is no surprise he has chosen to pursue a career in the same field to help law enforcement as part of a crime scene investigation team.

Originally from Jamaica, Boothe grew up in New York City. When he enlisted in the Army, he was sent to Fort Riley, where he took a Combat Lifesaver course from Barton and learned about all the opportunities Barton has for soldiers to continue their education while enlisted.

“Barton is very military friendly since they factor in all the possibilities that could occur as a military member and allow you to plan your education around those circumstances,” he said. “With online classes that have weekly due dates, I was able to complete over eight school courses in just eight months.”

Barton’s Fort Riley offerings center on its popular Leader Skills Enhancement Courses (LSEC), designed to help noncommissioned officers and soldiers with leadership potential build the advanced skills needed for higher-level leadership and staff roles. LSEC strengthens both soldier and unit performance through focused leadership training. Commanders can schedule courses for their units or enroll soldiers in open classes.

“The LSEC programs are a great way to have a semblance of much-needed classroom structure with the ability to have a dialogue with the teacher and my peers,” he said. “I did not have to pay for the courses, and I just needed my commander to sign off on me taking the courses for an hour during the workday.”

LSEC courses are available for active-duty soldiers, their dependents, veterans, and Department of Defense employees at no cost.

Boothe graduated with his Associate of Science in Applied Technologies degree in May and said the people at Barton truly helped him on his journey.

“The faculty gave me lots of information on how to continue our education and gave many people in my unit tips, which helped us to look forward to completing degrees,” he said. ”Over the past few months, I have met many professors, and they all have helped me in some way to achieve my goals, whether that was making time to speak with me about how I can improve or being understanding when missions got in the way of school. I want to thank Barton for that.”

Boothe will attend Arizona State University to earn his bachelor’s degree in forensic science, with a master’s degree already in his sights.

Fort Riley active-duty soldier works towards career as forensic analyst

Stopping short of a ban on large commercial-sized wind energy developments, the Barton County Commission Tuesday morning approved a series of resolutions that enacted major updates to the county’s zoning regulations for wind energy projects.

Balancing the preservation of the rights of landowners and keeping commercial-scale wind turbines from infringing on the county’s “way of life,” the commission adopted three separate resolutions upholding the 79-page recommendations put forth by the Barton County Planning Commission following a year of meetings, review and study sessions.

The resolutions primarily addressed three categories of WECS: Small-Scale Single-Use, Large-Scale Non-Commercial, and Commercial-Scale. Environmental Manager Judy Goreham presented the amendments, which will be incorporated into the Barton County Zoning Regulations, Version II, originally adopted in 2013.

Commissioners had no issues with the non-commercial systems, but it was Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson who suggested the commercial projects (with towers 800-feet tall or more) be banned.

“If we want to ban them, it is on us,” he said. “The Planning Commission did its work.”

It was noted that the new requirements for the commercial turbines were so restrictive that they were, in effect, a ban. Hutchinson said implementing a ban was the Planning Commission’s intent and an outright ban would make enforcement easier.

But, while Commissioner Barb Esfeld understood Hutchinson’s point, “I like the way (the Planning Commission members) have written them. You guys have done a good job protecting the county.”

Esfeld and Chairperson Tricia Schlessiger also felt a ban, although well-intentioned, was infringing on the rights of property owners. It also put restrictions on farmers who work in an already heavily-regulated industry.

According to state statute, approval of the changes as presented would require a simple majority of the Commission. However, if commissioners wanted changes or to send the regulations back to the Planning Commission for a rewrite, a two-thirds majority (or at least a 4-1 vote) would be needed.

Hutchinson’s motion for a ban failed on a 3-2 vote. He and Commissioner Donna Zimmerman and Duane Reif voted for it, and Commissioners Schlessiger and Esfeld voted against it.

In addition, with the Cheyenne Bottoms Wildlife Area playing such a big role in restricting wind project development, the wetlands prevent many projects from even being considered in Barton County.

It was also said that during the Planning Commission’s public hearing on the guidelines, no one was present to offer any opposition.

“I am actually very happy to be here in front of you today with this request,” Goreham said. “About a year and a half ago, our Planning Commission started work on completely rewriting the wind energy regulations that were originally adopted for single-use use small-scale only in Barton County back in 2007.”

“When we decided to attack this project, we took the template we had used for solar that we adopted in March of 2024, and we tried to create a very similar structure of regulations, but as we reviewed each thing, we consider the difference between a solar panel and a wind turbine,” she said.

Resolution 2025-18 amended Article III of the zoning regulations, specifying where each WECS type would be allowed within the county's seven zoning districts:

· Small-scale single-use WECS were designated as permitted in the Agricultural and Industrial Districts, and Conditionally Permitted in all five other districts. This would be a single turbine not connected to the power grid.

· Large non-commercial WECS were established as Conditionally Permitted in all seven zoning districts. These involve more than one turbine on a property not connected to the grid.

· Commercial-scale WECS were set as Conditionally Permitted in the Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial, and LMSC (Limited Manufacturing/Service Commercial) Districts, but Not Permitted in the Residential District, Unincorporated Community District, and Planned Community District. These are the massive towers that can stand 800 feet or more.

Setbacks and safety rules detailed

Resolution 2025-19 amended Article VIII to detail specific regulations and requirements for the three WECS classifications, focusing heavily on setbacks and environmental safety measures.

The new regulations provided clear definitions and restrictions:

· Small-scale single-use WECS (150 kW or less, 120 feet or less in height, for a single, particular use) must have a setback of no less than 1.1 times its total height to the nearest property line.

· Large non-commercial WECS (business or cooperative use, 150 kW or less, 120 feet or less in height, or where more than one turbine is proposed) required a setback of six times the total height to the property line. With a waiver, the minimum setback to a structure would remain 1 1/2 times the height of the turbine.

· Commercial Scale WECS (greater than 150 kW, or greater than 120 feet in height, connected to a larger electrical network) established a significant setback of one mile to a non-participating landowner's property line or 10 times the height, whichever is greater.

The planning commission opted to protect all structures in setback requirements, declining a suggestion from the County Commission to only include "residential" structures when considering variances.

Commercial-scale WECS were also mandated to employ specific technology to mitigate wildlife impact to prevent unnecessary bird and bat fatalities. No shadow flicker would be permitted beyond the property line for non-commercial and commercial systems.

To clarify the complex layers of new regulations, Resolution 2025-20 officially replaced the single Official Barton County Zoning Map with three separate maps: a General Zoning Map, a Solar Energy Conversion System (SECS) Map, and a new Wind Zoning Map.

The new Wind Zoning Map reflects an expanded No-Build Zone for Commercial Scale WECS, creating an area one mile outside of the previously adopted no-build zone for SECS around the Cheyenne Bottoms area. The No-Build Zone and the additional Conditionally Permitted Zone for all Small Scale Single Use wind energy around the Bottoms, originally adopted in 2007, was retained.

Wind energy zoning changes Oked by Barton Commission; wind ban pondered

Governor Laura Kelly today announced three Kansas communities have secured over $19 million in federal Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act (IIJA) funding to bolster local airport infrastructure.

The funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) program, combined with over $1.5 million in matching funds from the Kansas Infrastructure Hub and Build Kansas Fund, brings the total investment for this round of airport infrastructure grants to more than $20.5 million.

“Investing in our airports is crucial for enhancing connectivity and supporting local economies,”&nbsp;Governor Laura Kelly&nbsp;said.&nbsp;“These projects are receiving vital infrastructure grants, which will not only improve our airports and communities, but also strengthen the entire state’s transportation network.”

&nbsp;The Kansas airport projects receiving funding are:

In addition to these five awards, the Build Kansas Fund has provided the required match dollars for 50 other federal grant awards across Kansas. The combined total investment by the Build Kansas Fund in all projects is over $36.6 million, which has resulted in federal grant awards of more than $104.6 million.

The Kansas Infrastructure Hub connects multiple state agencies and serves as a resource center for Kansas communities to identify best practices for maximizing IIJA funding opportunities. The Build Kansas Fund provides state matching dollars for projects throughout Kansas that successfully apply for federal grants under IIJA.

Lyons Airport selected as part of $19 million Infrastructure and Investment Jobs Act

The city of Great Bend has its Trail of Lights at Jack Kilby
Square, Brit Spaugh Park, and Veterans Memorial Park. Some Great Bend residents
near Vets Lake have added to the holiday festivities with a trail of waving
Santas on 19th Street between Polk and McKinley. MelEesa Stueder
said she got the idea from another community.

“I saw it last December in a news article,” she said. “A
town in another state had done this. They just started out small, and the
neighboring neighborhoods just kept expanding. They had, I think, 42 at one point
when this article was done. They were just so cute that I thought I would see
if our neighbors would be interested.”

Stueder made some phone calls and the neighbors
overwhelmingly supported the project. She began purchasing 24 giant blow-up
Santas in August, but ran into problems as the item sold out and sales were
limited to two per buyer. Various friends stepped in to help sidestep the
limit.

“I would really like to see this, as this other town did, expand
to other streets nearby,” said Stueder. “I’ve already had someone reach out to
me from a street just around the corner who wanted to know where they could get
one. I think it would be lovely if the entire McKinley addition had giant blow
up Santa Clauses.”

The Santas are spread throughout the lawns on the north and south
sides of McKinley, just east of Veterans Lake. Stueder said the biggest obstacle
has been the Kansas wind, so the Santas may be deflated on those especially
windy winter days.

Great Bend neighborhood joins holiday festivities with two dozen giant Santas

Armyworms are a recurring pest issue across Kansas, but several different species fall under the “armyworm” umbrella. Each species varies in its host plants, seasonal activity, and whether it overwinters in the state (Table 1). This article prepared by Jeff Whitworth, K-State Extension Entomology Specialist provides an overview of the major species of concern, with emphasis on the Fall Armyworm and Armyworm, which were the primary issues for Kansas producers in 2025. A brief summary of the Army Cutworm, which is not a true armyworm, is also included. Table 1. Armyworm species that can be found in Kansas.

Major Concerns in 2025: The two species that caused the greatest concern to Kansas producers in 2025 were: Fall armyworm &amp; armyworm (true armyworm). Summaries for each species follow.

Fall Armyworm key characteristics: · Generations: 2-3 per year in Kansas · Overwintering: Do not overwinter in Kansas. Moths migrate in during the spring and begin depositing eggs. · Host Range: Very wide. They feed on grasses and broadleaf plants; nearly any green plant can be affected. · Seasonal Movement: Typically migrate south again in October · Monitoring:

o Pheromone traps are available for adult Fall armyworm moths.

o Important note: Trap catches indicate when moths are flying, NOT how many larvae are present or feeding in the fields.

· Generations: 2–3 per year in Kansas

· Overwintering: Yes. Overwinter in Kansas. No-till or reduced-till systems may favor overwintering survival.

· Host Range: Primarily grasses. Examples: wheat, brome, turf/lawns including golf courses, sorghum, and corn.

· Biological Control: Historically, parasitoids (especially tachinid flies and small parasitic wasps) helped suppress armyworm populations, but few have been observed in the past 3 years.

Identification: larvae are green to black with stripes of various colors. Head capsule is medium brown with dark markings.

ARMY CUTWORM (not a true Armyworm)

Biology and Seasonal Behavior · Adult moths (“miller moths”) migrate from the Rocky Mountains in early fall and deposit eggs into the soil. · Larvae hatch in the fall, feed until cold weather, and overwinter as partly grown larvae. · Feeding may resume anytime temperatures exceed 50°F, even during winter warm spells. · Primary damage occurs in early spring when several consecutive days exceed 50–60°F.

Identification: small larvae are light-colored with few distinguishable markings. As they grow, larvae become darker brown or grayish with varying degrees of mottling and several pale, dorsal stripes. The head capsule is darker brown with some mottling.

Damage - army cutworms can severely thin or eliminate stands of wheat, alfalfa, and rangeland grasses. Army cutworms were present in large numbers in 2020 and decimated areas of wheat fields and alfalfa fields in parts of Kansas. However, this was not the case in 2021, and only a few were reported in 2022. Army cutworms develop into “miller” moths, which were a nuisance in spring 2024 and a smaller nuisance in spring 2025.

CAMPBELL: The Armyworm Lineup - Who’s feeding in your field?

Marking over 40 years of public service to the county and surrounding area, the Barton County Commission on Tuesday formally honored County Engineer Barry McManaman upon his Dec. 12 retirement.

McManaman, who just celebrated his 10th anniversary leading the county’s engineering department, was praised by the commission for his invaluable experience and knowledge.

County Administrator Matt Patzner said McManaman would be "greatly missed" and was a "real asset to the county."

"Today we want to honor our County Engineer Barry McManaman," Patzner said. "He’s helped support infrastructure in Barton County and build relationships with townships and municipalities. He's going to be greatly missed, but we're very happy for you to reach this point, and hope you enjoy your retirement."

Commissioners echoed Patzner’s sentiment, thanking McManaman for his service, which included a stint as interim county administrator.

"Barry, we really appreciate that you did a fabulous job. We were blessed to have you. We appreciate you stepping up as our administrator too," Commissioner Barb Esfeld said. "And I'm glad to see you get to retire and have some fun now."

Commissioner Duane Reif, who has known McManaman for less than three years, admired "his dedication to the county" and "his ability to communicate with landowners."

Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson said McManaman was "more astute” than anyone else he’d worked with during his five years as commissioner, “the consummate professional".

"I came from the Air Force before I was commissioner, and the Air Force core values remind me of Barry McManaman," Hutchinson said. "They are integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do. I can't think of three better descriptive terms for Barry McManaman than those."

McManaman thanked his colleagues and community partners.

"I've really valued not only the relationships with the co-workers that I've had, but as was mentioned, landowners and township officials," McManaman said. "It's been a great career. No regrets. Highly, highly appreciate my career with KDOT and with the county. I'm just looking forward to retirement. It's going to be a great time to just move into a different phase. Thank you all very much."

During his tenure with the county, McManaman was credited with securing over $3 million in grant funding, utilizing his extensive knowledge of technical applications and regulatory standards. He also provided leadership as interim county administrator for a period.

In their formal appreciation letter, the commissioners noted that his final act of public service was helping to craft the details for the expansion of U.S. 56 to a four-lane roadway from the east city limit of Great Bend to the K-156 junction.

“What an auspicious way to end your career,” the letter reads.

Chairman Tricia Schlessiger and commissioners Barb Esfeld, Shawn Hutchinson, Duane Reif, and Donna Zimmerman signed the letter, which concluded by paraphrasing James Kip Finch: “The engineer has been, and is, a maker of history. You, Sir, have proven him right.”

“I didn’t really figure out what I wanted to do until I got to college,” said McManaman who grew up in Pratt. He had considered a career in wildlife management “before I realized engineering was my thing.”

After earning degrees from Pratt Community College and Kansas State University in civil engineering, McManaman began his career with the Kansas Department of Transportation in 1984, spending two years in the Winfield office before moving to Great Bend 29 years ago.

He rose to the position of area engineer, a role he held for over nearly three decades. He transitioned to county service in November 2015 when he was hired as the Barton County engineer following the retirement of Clark Rusco.

He has no real big plans now, except for doing some traveling and visiting grandkids, until his wife Cathie joins him in retirement in a couple of years.

The two have three children: Dena and her husband Matt Hiss of Great Bend who have three sons; Brett and his wife Brittany, who just had a baby boy in October, of League City, Texas; and the youngest Kelli of Kansas City who just got engaged to Dr. Jonathan Pike of Great Bend.

The Commission last Tuesday approved contracting with the Ellsworth engineering firm Kirkham-Michael to provide engineering services to the county, filling the void created by the retirement of McManaman.

The initial one-year agreement calls for a rate of $2,800 per month, which includes at least 12 hours of service and representation at a minimum of one Commission meeting in that period. Additional hours will be billed at an hourly rate.

Retiring Barton County engineer McManaman honored by Commission

The Santas Around the World exhibit, located at 1223 Main Street, is now open for the Christmas season. Twenty-five life-sized Santas, representing countries and regions from around the world, appear in a winter wonderland of lighted trees and festive holiday décor in downtown Great Bend.

Additionally, the City of Great Bend provides a free opportunity for Santa Claus to visit with children at the exhibit location during the same regular hours that the Santas exhibit is open to the public.

The public can visit the international Santa display from 4-6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, and from 1-6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The Santas exhibit will be on display and Santa Claus will be available through Dec. 23, which is a special Tuesday opening this year.

The Santas Around The World exhibit is presented by Roots &amp; Wings Foundation, which provides therapeutic, educational and recreational opportunities to people in need who have developmental disabilities.

There is no charge to visit the exhibit, but a freewill donation is suggested to provide funds to Rosewood Roots &amp; Wings Foundation that go toward helping to maintain the ‘Santas Around the World’ exhibit. Also, a portion of the funds are donated to Great Bend’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program for helping to man the booth through the season.

The multi-cultural Santas are a collection that span mostly six years of work and artistry by Great Bend artist Loretta Miller, beginning in 1999. Then, in the fall of 2022, the community’s longtime Santa Claus, Randy Smith, donated his late wife Sandy’s Mrs. Claus outfit to be used for the new addition to the exhibit. Miller’s completed work of Mrs. Claus was her first to the exhibit in 17 years, and the new sculpture was introduced to the public during the Christmas 2022 season. Following that season, Randy donated his Santa suit to the exhibit and Miller infused new life into Santa Claus for the 2023 season. Sadly, Randy passed away in February 2024, but not before experiencing the joy of last holiday season, knowing his suit joined Sandy’s in “Santa Spirit” as part of the Santas Around The World exhibit.

MANHATTAN, Kan.&nbsp;– One of the greatest players in school history will return to lead the Wildcats on the sidelines, as Collin Klein has been named the next head football coach at Kansas State, athletics director&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kstatesports.com/staff-directory/gene-taylor/1">Gene Taylor</a>&nbsp;announced Thursday.

A 2012 Heisman Trophy finalist and member of K-State Football's Ring of Honor, Klein is now in his 12th year in coaching, nine of which have come at K-State. 

Klein will be introduced to the public Friday in a welcome event at Morgan Family Arena. Doors open at 3 p.m., with the ceremony beginning at 4 p.m. It will also be streamed live on ESPN+."We are excited to welcome one of our all-time greats back home to Manhattan," Taylor said. 

"Collin is a tremendous leader who cares deeply about his players. The grit, toughness and aggression he displayed as a player still fuels him today as a coach, and he is determined to carry on the tremendous success this program has achieved.

Klein, the 36th head football coach in school history, has agreed to a five-year contract with an average base salary of $4.3 million to lead his alma mater. 

He served as K-State's offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M, a role that he will continue in during the Aggies' postseason run."My family and I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to come home," Klein said.

"The first K-State alum to serve as head football coach since Ellis Rainsberger from 1975-77,&nbsp; Klein helped the Wildcats to 51 wins and five bowl appearances during his tenure as a full-time assistant coach. 

He helped guide Kansas State to a 19-8 mark and a Big 12 Championship during his two-year run as offensive coordinator.His first full season as K-State offensive coordinator in 2022 was a success as he led an offense that ranked in the top 10 in school history in 11 categories, including ranking second in offensive yards (5,863) and plays (958), fourth in rushing yards (2,916) and fifth in yards per game (418.8).

The Wildcats finished the 2022 season with 421.6 total yards per game – their most since 2014 – while their 32.3 points per game were the most by the squad since 2017. K-State improved its production in Klein's second season at the offensive controls, as its 37.1 points per game ranked 10th nationally and sixth in school history, while it was the highest average by a K-State team since Klein's senior season of 2012 (38.9 points per game). 

Kansas State produced 445.2 total yards per game in 2023 to rank second in school history.In Klein's offense, running back Deuce Vaughn became the second player in school history to twice earn Consensus All-America honors, while Cooper Beebe became the first offensive lineman in school history to earn Consensus All-America honors.

Prior to serving as K-State's offensive coordinator, Klein was the Wildcats' quarterbacks coach in 2017, 2019 and 2021, while he was a co-offensive coordinator in 2018. 

He earned his first full-time coaching position tutoring the quarterbacks at Northern Iowa in 2016, which was just a year hiatus from Manhattan as he worked as an assistant director of recruiting and defensive quality control coach for the Wildcats in 2014 and an offensive graduate assistant in 2015.

The 2012 Johnny Unitas Award winner, Klein finished his K-State career ranking in the school's top 10 in 34 different game, season and career record categories. He was the first quarterback from a Power 5 school since 1998 to rush for at least 20 touchdowns and pass for 10 scores in consecutive seasons by doing so in 2011 and 2012.

Klein led the Wildcats to a combined 21-5 record as the starting quarterback in 2011 and 2012, which culminated with a No. 1 national ranking, Big 12 Championship and Fiesta Bowl berth in 2012.

Serving as the offensive coordinator at Texas A&amp;M the last two seasons, Klein has helped the Aggies to an 11-1 record this season and a possible berth into the College Football Playoff, which will be announced on Sunday. 

This season, Texas A&amp;M holds an 11-1 record as the Aggies rank in the top 30 nationally in scoring offense (16th; 36.3 points per game), total offense (20th; 454.4 yards per game), rushing offense (26th; 192.7 yards per game), passing offense (32nd; 261.8 yards per game), tackles for loss allowed (1st; 2.83 per game), fourth down percentage (2nd; 75.0%), sacks allowed (11th; 1.00 per game), passing yards per completion (11th; 14.09), time of possession (15th; 32:24) and first downs (29th; 272). 

Texas A&amp;M has hit the 400-yard mark in total offense 10 times in 12 games thus far in 2025.A 2025 Broyles Award Semifinalist, Klein has guided Aggie quarterback Marcel Reed to top-15 individual marks this season in passing yards per completion (7th; 14.03), points responsible for (13th; 186) and passing touchdowns (14th; 25).

In his first season at Texas A&amp;M in 2024, Klein helped guide the Aggies to a 5-0 start in SEC play, marking the program's best start in SEC action and its best conference start since 1998. Texas A&amp;M boasted the No. 2 rushing offense in the SEC, ranking 26th nationally (195.5 yards per game), and the offensive line ranked 10th in the country by allowing just 51.0 tackles for loss on the year.
