The road project on K-4 Highway in Hoisington has
moved to the second phase. Anyone entering the project area from the north or
south side will not be able to make a left turn onto K-4.


The highway
replacement project started this spring in Hoisington, and city administration
is asking citizens to use caution as they navigate the construction.
The construction in K-4 goes from Center Street to Main Street.


Along with the street replacement, the project includes the replacement of curb
and gutter and new sidewalks. 

The first phase of the project involved the
removal and replacement of the pavement in the north 16 feet of the roadway. 
The project is expected to be completed by mid-August.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Make a Difference Contest 

When Wendy Lockwood came away from a recent meeting, she was thankful that participants “were aware of the vital importance of behavioral healthcare and the value of the CCBHC model in delivering that care.”

Lockwood is executive director of The Center for Counseling &amp; Consultation, 5815 Broadway; CCBHC stands for Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic. The Center became a fully licensed CCBHC last year.

This model of care takes the holistic approach of caring for the whole person. In addition to care coordination, case management and all the traditional forms of therapy, a CCBHC offers housing, employment and veterans’ specialists, along with medication-assisted treatment and a pharmacy.

Thirty-five local and area stakeholders attended the meeting, which The Center hosted. Participants included: The Center’s employees and board of directors’ members; law-enforcement officers; Kansas legislators; four of the five Barton County Commissioners; representatives of Juvenile Services and Central Kansas Community Corrections; and a hospital administrator.

“This was an exceptional turnout of community decision-makers and funders,” Lockwood commented. “We appreciate these community partners’ commitment to our efforts to address affordable and accessible behavioral healthcare.”

Rep. Sherri Brantley, who attended the meeting, said she was grateful to make connections in person and learn more about a CCBHC “because it looks deeper into a person’s background and tries to discover the core issues. For example, are poverty, homelessness and/or drugs and alcohol involved in behavioral concerns?”

Because of Brantley’s 37 years of experience in education at all levels, she is especially concerned about children and their families.

“Parents sometimes get a bad rap,” she commented. “It may appear they don’t want to solve behavioral problems but sometimes they just don’t know where to turn. The Center and other agencies are here for them.”

Brantley, who serves on the Kansas House Education and K-12 committees, will take what she learned at the meeting to “satisfy the needs of schools and other entities, and share information about funding. The more knowledge I have, the more specific I can be about legislation and finding funds to support it. That is my job.”

The state representative also expressed her gratitude to The Center for hosting the meeting. “It was phenomenal for them to step up and make this happen. I look forward to more discussions; this was not a one-and-done deal.”

Participants also learned the results of a recent Kansas public-opinion poll, which show an increasing awareness of mental-health needs and strong support for continued investment in community services, said Michelle Ponce, associate director of the Association of Community Mental Health Centers of Kansas.

Ponce and Kyle Kessler, executive director of ACMHCK, made presentations at the local meeting.

“The survey illustrates that the increase in awareness and support since 2020 is quite significant,” Ponce reported. “For instance, when asked if they or someone they knew had experienced mental-health issues, 48 percent of respondents said ‘yes’ in 2019. It was 51 percent the next year and increased to 75 percent this year.”

Ponce speculates there are a number of reasons for this, including decreased stigma, particularly in younger generations; increased awareness of the impact of social isolation; increased rates of anxiety and depression after the global pandemic; and the normalization of mental-health care.

Another survey question asked if there should be continued investment in community mental health. In 2019, 67 percent said ‘yes’ and in 2020 the number was 60 percent. But this year, it increased to 89 percent.

“As awareness of needs grows, so does support for investing in services to meet those needs,” Ponce said.

Ponce also wanted to thank “Wendy Lockwood and her staff for their hospitality but more important, for the work they do every day to serve the community. This work truly saves lives. We also appreciate the meeting attendees who took time from their busy schedules to discuss community mental health.”

Kansas has 26 licensed community mental health centers, serving all 105 counties and providing 24/7 services regardless of ability to pay.

“This system is a safety net for behavioral health,” Ponce noted. “In recent years, the system has undergone a dramatic transition to the CCBHC model and now all Kansans have access to these expanded services.

“It truly is a game-changer because it greatly increases community services that include enhanced care coordination, as well as expanded outpatient crisis and substance-use-disorder services to meet mental, physical and social needs.

“In addition, it changes the way clinics are reimbursed for services to fully cover the true cost and allow for long-term sustainability.”

The significant investment by the State of Kansas in the CCBHC model, “for which we are very grateful, will continue to modernize the system to best meet Kansans’ needs,” Ponce added. “A recent statewide study predicts that for a 40 percent increase in cost, the CCBHC model will provide a 75 percent increase in access to care.

“That is an amazing return on investment and one that our opinion poll indicates is widely supported by Kansans.”

The Center hosts meeting to discuss CCBHC, survey results

The&nbsp;American Red Cross of Greater Kansas urges everyone to take three critical actions to stay safe during extreme heat:

1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay hydrated&nbsp;by drinking a cup of water every hour, even if you don’t feel thirsty.&nbsp;Avoid sugary, caffeinated and alcoholic drinks.

2.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay cool&nbsp;by spending time&nbsp;in air-conditioned places. If your home is too hot, go to a mall, library or cooling center.

3.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Stay connected&nbsp;by checking on others and asking for help if you need it. Make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

“Knowing what to do to protect yourself and loved ones from extreme heat can save lives,” said&nbsp;Jane Blocher, Executive Director of the Red Cross of Greater Kansas.&nbsp;“We’re asking everyone to check on friends and neighbors, especially older adults, people with chronic conditions, outdoor workers and athletes. You could make all the difference by sending a text, making a call or knocking on their door.”

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO&nbsp; Remind everyone to drink water, even if they don’t feel thirsty. Aim for a cup of water every hour and encourage people to avoid sugary, caffeinated or alcoholic drinks. Babies should be breast-fed or bottle-fed often. Fewer wet diapers or darker urine can be signs of dehydration.

Encourage athletes and outdoor workers to take breaks in the shade. They should drink a cup of water every 20 minutes and take frequent water breaks.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Help those without air conditioning find a safe place to go like a mall, library or cooling center. They can also take cool showers or baths to help cool off. Remind people to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in light colors.

Never leave a child or pet alone inside a parked car, and make sure pets have access to fresh water and shade.

HEAT ILLNESS SIGNS&nbsp; Anyone can become ill during extreme heat if their body can’t cool down properly. It’s critical to act fast as some types of heat illness can be deadly.

Heat cramps&nbsp;are signaled by heavy sweating and muscle pain. Take action by stopping what you’re doing, resting in a cool place and slowly sipping water. Don’t drink if you feel sick,&nbsp;and get medical help if cramps last over an hour or you have heart problems.

Heat exhaustion&nbsp;is signaled by heavy sweating, weakness, cool and clammy skin, muscle cramps, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting. Take action by stopping what you’re doing, resting in a cool place and slowly sipping water. Don’t drink if you feel sick.&nbsp;Loosen your clothes and place a cool wet cloth on your body. Get medical help if you don’t feel better, vomit or have heart problems.

Heat stroke&nbsp;is a deadly condition signaled by high body temperature, rapid heartbeat, confusion, headache, dizziness, fainting, nausea or vomiting. Call 911.&nbsp;Move to a cooler place, remove extra clothing and use a wet cloth or a cool bath to cool down.&nbsp;Don’t drink anything.

IF THE POWER GOES OUT&nbsp; When a heat wave and a power outage happen at the same time, it can be even more dangerous. With the 2025 wheat harvest in full swing it is time to think about weed control in wheat stubble. When soil moisture conditions are favorable, weeds that have been suppressed by the canopy will grow rapidly once crop competition is removed. In addition, weeds that have emerged through the wheat canopy will be damaged during harvest and will quickly begin regrowth. Delaying control can result in lost soil moisture that could be used for crop production, as well as weed seed production, which will cause difficulties in the future.

When thinking about weed control in wheat stubble, there are two priorities – controlling already emerged weeds and preventing later flushes. Making applications before weeds exceed 4 to 6 inches is necessary for good control of already emerged weeds. Residual herbicides are necessary to reduce the number of herbicide applications required to control multiple flushes of weeds.

Despite a growing number of herbicide-resistant weeds, glyphosate plus 2,4-D LVE and/or dicamba continue to be important for weed control in wheat stubble. However, these herbicides alone are not likely to provide adequate control of pigweeds or kochia, especially when applied in the hot, dry conditions that are common after wheat harvest. Some herbicide options commonly used to control weeds after wheat harvest are listed.

Paraquat (Gramoxone, others) is a Group 22 herbicide that can work well in place of glyphosate for nonselective control of emerged pigweed and kochia. If planning to plant corn or sorghum next spring, a tank mix of paraquat with atrazine (Group 5) will enhance the control of emerged weeds and provide some residual weed control. Atrazine labels have recently changed such that the only noncrop uses of atrazine permitted are for wheat stubble in wheat-fallow-wheat, wheat-corn-fallow, and wheat-sorghum-fallow rotations.

Metribuzin is another Group 5 herbicide that can be used instead of atrazine to enhance control and provide some residual activity.

One final note regarding paraquat. Limited research out of Australia suggests applying paraquat 2 weeks after a glyphosate application will increase weed control. This is called a ‘double knock’ strategy. This information is included here not as a recommendation per se, but to encourage careful thought about when you want to utilize contact herbicides in your fallow weed management system. If paraquat were sprayed with or before glyphosate, the rapid damage to leaf tissue with prevent uptake and translocation of glyphosate. However, if a glyphosate application partially controls weeds, there will be sufficient leaf area 2 weeks after application for paraquat to be effective.

Saflufenacil (Sharpen), a Group 14 herbicide applied at one to two fluid ounces per acre, is an option to provide postemergence and short-term residual control of Palmer amaranth, kochia, and other broadleaf weeds.

Tiafenacil (Reviton) is a Group 14 very similar to Sharpen in terms of weed control and adjuvant use.

Flumioxazin (Valor, others) is a Group 14 herbicide that can be added to burndown treatments at rates of one to four fluid ounces per acre for activity on emerged broadleaf weeds and some residual activity on broadleaf and grass weeds in wheat stubble. Flumioxazin can be mixed with glyphosate or clethodim (Select Max) for enhanced grass control. It can also be mixed with 2,4-D, atrazine, metribuzin, or paraquat.

Another group 14 herbicide that can be considered is sulfentrazone (Spartan, others). Sulfentrazone can be applied to stubble and will control Palmer amaranth and kochia as well as other broadleaf weeds and some grasses. Of the Group 14 herbicides discussed, flumioxazin and sulfentrazone provide the greatest residual activity; however, saflufenacil provides greater postemergence kochia control than flumioxazin. Research to evaluate Palmer amaranth control in wheat stubble was conducted in Hays during 2019 and 2020. Herbicides were applied approximately 3 weeks after harvest to Palmer amaranth that was two to three feet tall. Palmer amaranth control 4 weeks after application in general, treatments that included paraquat (Gramoxone) resulted in the greatest Palmer amaranth control.

This is day 5 of the Kansas Wheat Harvest Reports, brought to you by the Kansas Wheat Commission, Kansas Association of Wheat Growers, Kansas Grain and Feed Association and the Kansas Cooperative Council.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Harvest is progressing steadily across parts of Kansas, with yields generally around average despite challenges like strong winds, scattered rain and wheat streak mosaic virus. Weather and market conditions remain obstacles. Growers are staying optimistic and focused on finishing the season successfully.

Jess Schwieterman, who farms with his wife Laryce in Hamilton County near Syracuse, reports that this year’s harvest has been going well, despite strong winds and a few rain showers. They received a good November rain, but no winter moisture and a dry March and April until it started raining the week after Easter. The grain fill conditions were excellent, and yields have been right around average, similar to last year. Test weights have held up around 60 to 61 pounds per bushel.&nbsp;

High winds brought in a spring infection of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus, turning the fields yellow. Schwieterman mentioned several varieties that have proven to have good resistance - KS Territory, KS Bill Snyder and KS Dallas. Their harvest began on June 20 and is nearly halfway finished. However, others in the area are just getting started. They have been pleased with yields, noting that the longer the fields are in no-till, the better they yield. They also manage for higher yields and have a strong fertility program. The biggest challenge this year has been the depressed wheat prices.

Kris Allen, general manager of Randall Farmers Coop in Jewell County, reports that harvest has been moving steadily across their two locations. Since taking in their first load on June 16, they’ve brought in around 700,000 bushels. Yields are ranging from 45 to 60 bushels per acre, and protein levels are holding solid at 12.6. Depending on the area, fields are about halfway to two-thirds cut, with combines rolling steadily. While this year isn’t quite as massive as last year’s crop, fueled by failed acres the season before, it’s still shaping up to be a strong and successful year.&nbsp;

Over halfway done with harvest, Brian Sieker, a farmer in Rice county, is facing the challenges of a wet season head-on, and staying optimistic.

“Mud is a challenge, but we’re grateful for it,” Sieker said. “Moisture is a welcome sight for our crop.”

On average, fields have produced 40-70 bushels per acre. Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus (WSMV) has taken a toll on both yield and test weight this year, prompting a change in how he’ll select varieties going forward.

“In the future, I will be taking varieties for WSMV; I haven’t in the past,” Sieker said. “We have to protect our neighbors because the investment is huge and margins are thin.”

With winter in mind, Sieker said he’s glad to have residue left in the fields. “It’s nice to have the stubble. It will hold us through the winter.”

Above all, he encourages others to check in with each other and find joy in the season.

“Check on your neighbors," he said. "Enjoy the process. Harvest is a fun but stressful time.”

UNDATED (AP) — BYU signee AJ Dybantsa and Kansas recruit Darryn Peterson are the headliners when it comes to looking at potential NBA lottery candidates for the 2026 draft. The 6-foot-9 Dybantsa has been a favorite to be the No. 1 overall draft pick as the top-ranked recruit for ESPN, On3 and Rivals. Peterson is a 6-5 combo guard who headlines 247Sports' recruiting rankings. Duke signee Cameron Boozer, Tennessee's Nate Ament and North Carolina's Caleb Wilson are all potential one-and-done picks with high-end pro potential. Other names to watch include Kentucky's Jayden Quaintaince and Alabama's Labaron Philon as sophomores returning to the college ranks.

Here's an early look next summer's potential lottery prospects:

The 6-foot-9 forward chose the Cougars over Kansas, North Carolina and Alabama. Athleticism and versatility shine through his rangy scoring skillset, notably when he attacks off the dribble and finishes at the rim. The Massachusetts native spent last year with Utah Prep and is on this summer's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.usab.com/news/2025/06/2025-usa-basketball-mens-u19-national-team-announced">USA Basketball Under-19 National Team</a>&nbsp;for the FIBA World Cup.

The 6-5 guard from Ohio offers perimeter size with ability to play on or off the ball. He can attack off the dribble or step outside, offering potential to overwhelm smaller guards and impact games defensively. Peterson played last season with Prolific Prep in California and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/mcdonalds-allamerican-boys-391dc7715513b0c4411fcbc5bd1f6279">was co-MVP of the McDonald's All-American game</a>.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/duke-boozer-twins-final-four-bc2f0b8daf0d72a844492d7d4f599662">The 6-9 forward joined twin Cayden</a>&nbsp;in winning a high school national title and fourth straight Florida state title. The son of former Duke and NBA forward Carlos Boozer showed his inside-out game (22 points, 16 rebounds, six assists) leading the U.S. past the World team in the Nike Hoop Summit. He joined Peterson as the McDonald's game co-MVP.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/tennessee-vols-barnes-nate-ament-512a7abaa1a8ec13b47ecc8edd550e21">The 6-9 forward</a>&nbsp;is a McDonald's All-American and Gatorade player of the year for Virginia with versatile skills. He'll improve as he adds strength to his lean frame, though he stands out with ballhandling and shooting range.

The 6-9 forward from Atlanta and McDonald's All-American offers two-way potential with his athleticism and length, including as a shot blocker. The McDonald's All-American announced his UNC commitment&nbsp;<a href="https://youtu.be/UA79NsEC3vY?si=tEraEj0ZEd2cDOMo&amp;t=141">on TNT's “Inside The NBA” show</a>&nbsp;alongside former NBA players Shaquille O'Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith.

ESPN and 247Sports rank Cenac as the nation's top center, offering rangy skills and outside shooting that made him the MVP of the NBPA Top 100 camp in summer 2024.&nbsp;<a href="https://uhcougars.com/news/2024/11/26/mens-basketball-chris-cenac-jr-joins-mens-basketball">Houston coach Kelvin Sampson has said</a>&nbsp;the McDonald's All-American is “not a big man's big man... he is a basketball player who happens to be 6-foot-10.”

7. Karim Lopez, New Zealand Breakers (Australia)

The versatile 6-8 wing from Mexico is part of the National Basketball League's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nextstars.com.au/players/karim-lopez">“Next Stars” program designed to develop high-end prospects</a>, averaging 9.6 points and 4.7 assists in his 2024-25 debut season. He turns 18 in December.

The 6-9 forward was a top-10 recruit last year&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkLZ5Zfgj2Q">entering Arizona State</a>, where he averaged 9.4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.6 blocks. He later transferred to join the Wildcats.

The 6-3 McDonald’s All-American is big signee for Pat Kelsey entering Year 2 of his tenure with the Cardinals, ranking as the No. 1 point guard prospect for Rivals. He joined Dybantsa in making the U.S. U-19 team.

The 6-2 Acuff is the top point guard prospect for 247Sports (No. 5 overall) and ESPN (No. 7). The McDonald's All-American operates smoothly in the pick-and-roll with the ability to attack defenders off the dribble and from 3-point range.

ESPN's ninth-ranked recruit offers a sturdy frame (roughly 6-5 and 210 pounds) and versatile athleticism while being known for a high-motor style. He had 24 points for the World team against the U.S. in the Nike Hoop Summit in April.

12. Dash Daniels, Melbourne United (Australia)

Like Lopez,&nbsp;<a href="https://nbl.com.au/news/daniels-dashes-to-nbl-next-stars">the younger brother of Atlanta Hawks guard Dyson Daniels</a>&nbsp;is will play for the NBL's “Next Stars” program. Dash is a 6-6 point guard who has been through NBA Academy Australia.

The 6-6 guard withdrew from this year's draft and must add strength to a 175-pound frame. But there's clear upside with his explosive scoring potential, such&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wNjtwA9MTQ">as hitting six first-half 3s</a>&nbsp;out of nowhere against Auburn in December.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JREpskXjJUE">The 6-4 freshman point guard</a>&nbsp;was a last-minute draft withdrawal. He averaged 10.6 points and 3.8 assists for an Elite Eight team that just lost Associated Press first-team All-American Mark Sears from the backcourt.

—ALIJAH ARENAS: The son of former NBA guard Gilbert Arenas is a McDonald's All-American known for scoring and court vision, but the 6-6 guard's status is unclear as he's still working back from&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alijah-arenas-usc-basketball-car-crash-cfcf1c0934f1e7c4f4a147ac1d358c91">an April truck accident</a>&nbsp;that had him placed in a medically induced coma. Arenas&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/alijah-arenas-gilbert-usc-crash-d9146b4fe7e820a77a96c170a215d218">avoided major injury</a>&nbsp;and said this week he works out daily, with the plan of soon joining USC summer workouts.

— MILES BYRD: The 6-7 guard from San Diego State withdrew from the draft after averaging 12.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.7 assists as a redshirt sophomore.

— IAN JACKSON: The 6-4 guard averaged 11.9 points while shooting 39.5% from 3-point range at North Carolina as a five-star freshman before transferring to St. John’s.

— YAXEL LENDEBORG: The 6-9, 240-pound forward has gone from junior college to UAB and now Michigan. He withdrew from the draft after averaging 15.8 points and 11.0 rebounds in two seasons with the Blazers.

— TAHAAD PETTIFORD: The 6-1 freshman averaged 11.6 points and shot 36.6% on 3s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_lun0S9w_3I">for Auburn's Final Four team</a>. He's set for a leading role after withdrawing from the draft.

— MELEEK THOMAS: The 6-4 guard averaged 33.5 points per 40 minutes with Overtime Elite. He's a McDonald's All-American who signed with Arkansas.
