Winter Jam Day 2 Results

Despite some late fireworks, there was little drama in Tuesday's wrestling dual between Great Bend High School and Hays. The Panthers opened up a 46-3 lead and held on to take the dual 52-20.

There was high drama early on as freshman Able Spencer stepped into varsity action against Hays freshman Cyler Luck (16-5) at 106 pounds. Spencer led 6-0 after two minutes and was leading 7-4 late in the second before a late takedown leveled the score. In overtime, Spencer fell victim to a takedown in a 10-7 loss.

Those would be the only three Hays points for a while. Fifth-ranked Cal Schartz tech-falled his 113-pound opponent 15-0 late in the second period. Senior Ambrose Kramer led most of the way at 120 pounds before pinning his opponent early in the third. Freshman Logan Turner, also a varsity newcomer, needed just 29 seconds to win his first match at 126 pounds.

Sophomore Hayden Liles picked up a quality win against Grady Lind (12-4) at 132 pounds. Liled led 7-0 after to minutes and pinned Lind with seven ticks left in the second. Sixth-ranked Triston Tomlinson piled up 17 points in less than two minutes to win a 17-2 tech fall in the first period at 138 points.

The momentum continued at 144 pounds as junior Trevin Maciel picked up an escape point early in the third to pull ahead 7-6. He ultimately won a 13-8 decision. Junior Hayden Kelly, now ranked No. 5 at 150 pounds, followed with a 10-1 major decision. Sophomore Blake Stein needed just 65 seconds to hand Camdyn Cooper his first loss of the season at 157 pounds. Senior Jace Schartz capped the giant run with one of his trademark tech falls, a 21-5 win in the first period at 165 pounds.

Hays picked up tech fall points at 175 pounds via third-ranked Dalton Meyers, who defeated Maxx Steffan. Indian junior Jonathan Roggler followed with a pin against Panther freshman Brady Mendez at 190 pounds. 

Sixth-ranked Trenton Kern led 3-0 after one period before pinning his opponent at 215 pounds. With many in attendance on their feet for the final match of the evening, Hays sophomore Tanner Geist got the win by fall against Panther sophomore Ryder Morris.

Great Bend wrestlers open up giant lead in dual win against Hays

As fate would have it, Tuesday's wrestling dual between Western Athletic Conference rivals Great Bend and Hays came down to the final two contested matches. But some late roster changes made it interesting. The No. 7 Lady Panthers eventually got the 45-36 win over the third-ranked Indians.

"It was awesome because we're not very good against Hays," said senior Danica Cline. "We have broken our dual streak of losing this year so I'm really happy about that. The girls' program has just grown so much."

Cline moved down to 170 pounds where she trailed 3-0 after one period. She was able to ride out the top and get a pin in the second period to give the Panthers a 39-30 edge. But the Indians were guaranteed six points in the final match of the dual - an open weight for Great Bend.

"I was just trying not to get pinned, trying to get out and get us some points," said Cline. "It's just feeling something, try to get an arm or a leg and just keep her down a second."

That meant the dual hinged on the 190-pound match. Senior Kirra Stevens entered the day ranked No. 3 at 170 pounds and found out just after weigh-ins that she would be wrestling up a weight against second-ranked Hays sophomore Eleanor Stoffel, who entered the night with a 17-4 record.

"Not look at her record and, honestly, do what I do and do my absolute best just because I know my team relies on me for these kinds of things," Stevens said.

Despite being undersized, Stevens was able to throw Stoffel a pair of times. One of those throws resulted in a pin 31 seconds into the second period. Those six points secured the dual.

"Usually, taller girls are a lot harder for me," Stevens said. "Coach (Lars Lueders) has been training me a lot to handle the taller girls better so that's helped a lot."

Great Bend largely dominated the lightweight matches. Second-ranked Camdyn Post needed just 30 seconds to pin freshman Alondra Garcia, a varsity fill-in, at 105 pounds. Sophomore Keira Leyva pinned her 110-pound opponent late in the first period for a 12-6 Panther lead. Freshman Micah Ellegood moved up to No. 2 in the latest 125-pound rankings. She needed just 90 seconds to pin her opponent, and freshman Brooklyn Kelly followed with a 94-second pin at 130 pounds. Great Bend opened up a 27-12 lead.

Hays picked up 18 points over the next three classes with a pair of pins and an open weight. Riata Stryker was pinned at 140 pounds, and Tara Newton was pinned at 145 pounds. Lea Nokes picked up open points at 155 pounds to give the Panthers a 33-30 advantage heading into the final two contested matches.

Sophomore Kayle Baldwin picked up crucial points at 120 pounds in perhaps the best match of the dual. She trailed 10-1 before turning things around for a 15-12 decision against sophomore Kenlee Vehige. Freshman Sophia Bauer led 6-3 after one period at 100 pounds but was pinned in the second period. Madison Ketch lost by fall at 115 pounds.

Garden City failed to break the top three as a team at the Class 6A Bowling Championships last year but the Buffalo boys have been a powerhouse in recent years, including a third-place 6A finish in 2023. Last year, just six individual bowlers rolled 700 series at the 6A state tournament. Monday at the Walnut Bowl, two Garden City athletes surpassed 700 pins. The Garden City boys took all 13 WAC points against the Panthers, and the Lady Buffs took eight of the 13.

Garden City placed three in the top 19 at state last year and two of those bowlers were back in action Monday. Karsten Nichols ended with a 247 game to edge out teammate Bo Roth by four pins with a 708 series.

Daegen Miller nearly kept up for Great Bend. He opened with games of 237 and 213 to finish with a 632 series in third place. Xander Orth opened with a 208 and finished seventh with a 557 series. Brantley Vsetecka had a 205 middle game for a 532 series, and Kanyen Parr was consistent on the day for a 502 series. Josh Manning just missed a 500 series at 489, and Quinten Miller finished strong for a 471 series. Garden City swept the Baker games though Great Bend was within 11 pins in game one and lost the final game 217-210.

The competition was fierce in girls' action. Great Bend's Zoey Mayberry opened with games of 190 and 187 to take the high-series with a 558. Garden City's Chloe Carr and Morgan Schwaderer finished second and third, respectively, at 547 and 540. Schwaderer had the high-game at 221.

Lady Panther sophomore Brooklynn Mayberry was in the mix after games of 180 and 176 before dropping to fourth with a 502 series. Emery Meza placed sixth with a 460 series, and Kacie Schroeder finished behind her with a 420. Abigail Alvarez shot a 390, and Layne Soukup finished at 291. Garden City won the team score by just 37 pins. 

Competition remained close in the Baker games. Both sides rolled a 176 in game one. Great Bend won game three 158-154 and dominated the final game 172-112.

Panther bowlers fall to tough 6A Garden City teams

The Barton Community College softball team has been picked third according to league member coaches for the upcoming 2025 KJCCC Conference Division I season.Fourth in the past two pre-season predictions, the Cougars move up in Head Coach Carson DuBose's third season following a third place finish 21-11 last season in both the regular season and subsequent Region 6 Tournament, concluding the year at 29-20 overall.

Defending KJCCC Champion Butler Community College came out on top of the voting receiving four first place votes towards their 76 total points as defending Region 6 Champion Hutchinson Community College accumulated 71 points including four first place nods as well.

The Cougars received 62 total points in being tabbed to finish no lower than fourth place, well ahead of the point standings from Colby Community College's 45 points

Last season ten members of the squad earned All-Conference/Region VI honors, five of those returning for their sophomore season. The selections, along with the rest of the squad, set nine program records with three additional top ten impacts while placing among the nation's top ten 2023-24 season achievements including a 2nd best Fewest Strikeouts per At-Bat (2.37), a 3rd most Doubles (141), a 6th best Batting Average (.405), and an 8th best Highest On-Base Percentage (.477).

Two returners landed on the first team headlined by the league's reigning Most Valuable Player in outfielder&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/mcdougal_allyson_eycw">Allyson McDougal</a>. Native of Moore, Oklahoma, McDougal concluded her freshman campaign on a nine-game hit streak, set the program record batting .488 on the season on a third all-time best 83 hits in her 49 games played including 27 multi-hit performances. In addition to the nine game hit streak, McDougal also strung streaks of 12 and 14 games, the latter drawing the Week Six KJCCC and NJCAA Player of the Week award.

<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/bartlett_elina_ycut">Elina Bartlett</a>&nbsp;helped the Cougars in multiple facets whether in the lineup for her bat or in the center circle to earn 1st team Designated Player honors. The Cheney, Kansas, native began her career with a 3-for-4 performance, carrying on through the season to bat a team third best .431 to land just outside the program's top ten best single season average. From the circle Bartlett appeared in 28 games going 9-3 and recording a save.

The remaining three returners earning 2nd team distinction last season are infielders&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/lawrence_aly_v3nd">Aly Lawrence</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/enslinger_chloe_jqgg">Chloe Enslinger</a>, along with pitcher&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/angielski_brooklynn_uqho">Brooklynn Angielski</a>.

Lawrence manned second base for much of the year, while spending some time in the center circle. Batting .429, the Wichita, Kansas, native strung together a 17-game hit streak during the season with 21 multi-hit performances in connecting on 21 doubles for second most on the team.

Enslinger manned the hot corner for much of the season with occasional time spent behind the dish relieving honorable mention selection Leslie Ramos who is continuing her career at Emporia State University.

Batting .425 in the middle of the lineup, Enslinger led the team with a .799 slugging percentage and 11 home runs to drive in the program's 5th most 60 runs in a single season. Earning the KJCCC's Week 12 Player of the Week honor, the freshman from Derby, Kansas, led the league with 9 home runs against conference opponents and drove in a second most 43 runs.

Despite being hampered by injury mid-way through the season, Angielski made an impression with league coaches in her initial collegiate season. The freshman from Sperry, Oklahoma, was the game one starter when available, finishing the season 9-9 overall pitching 98.0 innings and striking out 73 batters. In league play Angielski was 6-3 in the circle in ranking 6th overall with a 5.89 strikeout per seven innings average.

In addition to the post-season selections, two others return in pitcher&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/goseland_alicia_w8k9">Alicia Goseland</a>&nbsp;and first baseman&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/sball/2024-25/bios/mascarenas_mia_1zoc">Mia Mascarenas</a>, along with eleven freshman and welcoming in first year Assistant Coach Kelcie Kippes, a former standout pitcher at conference foe Butler.

Barton opens the season Friday, January 31, in Neosho, Missouri, in two days of contests against host Crowder College and Northeastern Junior College.

Next up will be the Cougars' home opener on Wednesday, February 5, against Neosho County Community College before embarking south for a four-game weekend in Dennison, Texas.

Two more tune-up dates are scheduled, February 19 hosting Fort Scott Community College and a February 22 trip to Rose State College.

The Cougars will open the 16-date, 32-game conference slate at home February 26 hosting Seward County Community College.

Regular season concludes coinciding with the Cougars' last home game on April 26 against Hutchinson.

Post-season begins May 2 with the four-day Region 6/Plains District Championship with the victor earning a trip to Yuma, Arizona, for the NJCAA Division I Softball World series held May 19-24.

NFL officials were heavily scrutinized for some of the flags they threw in the four divisional round games that saw the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/texans-chiefs-score-mahomes-nfl-playoffs-67b6cca111cfa36594f8527b8758fc01">Chiefs</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ravens-bills-playoffs-score-d51389973b294ff4962efa8f951c1087">Bills</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/eagles-rams-score-barkley-6a7d6f115c1077dd3be95290ea11f264">Eagles</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lions-commanders-score-nfl-playoffs-74382ca3f1bc0c69caba21e39f4787d3">Commanders</a>&nbsp;advance to next weekend’s conference championships.

Yet, it was one play that didn’t draw a flag could prove a most consequential non-call if the NFL decides to join the NBA and NHL in seriously cracking down on floppers, as ESPN broadcaster Troy Aikman suggested during the Texans-Chiefs game.

NFL players can be penalized for the big umbrella “unsportsmanlike conduct” infraction, but there isn’t an official rule against flopping, and Aikman urged the league to address that during one of his several conversations with Joe Buck over the officiating in the Chiefs’ 23-14 victory.

On the same possession where he benefitted from his late slide that caused two Texans to crash into each other, drawing a widely panned unnecessary roughness flag, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes appeared to try to deke referee Clay Martin’s officiating crew into throwing another flag to aid Kansas City’s drive, which ended with a touchdown that put the Chiefs up by eight in the fourth quarter.

Scrambling to his left, Mahomes pulled up just as he went out of bounds. When linebacker Henry To’oTo’o tapped him, Mahomes throws himself dramatically to the ground but failed to fool the officials — or impress Aikman, the Hall of Fame quarterback who earlier took umbrage at the roughing-the-passer call against Houston.

“He’s trying to draw the penalty. Rather than just run out of bounds, he slows down,” Aikman protested. “And that’s been the frustration, and I get it. I understand it. That’s been the frustration for these defensive players around the league.”

Earlier in the drive, Aikman said he “could not disagree” more with the roughing penalty called on To’oTo’o and defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi, who smashed into each other and made incidental contact with Mahomes, who was underneath them after his late slide.

When Martin announced the penalty, Aikman interjected, “Oh, come on!”

“He’s a runner. I could not disagree with that one more, and he barely gets hit,” Aikman said, noting that Mahomes shouldn’t have been afforded the extra protections provided quarterbacks in the pocket once he started running on the play. “That’s the second (questionable) penalty now that’s been called against the Texans. … It was a late flag, and it was Clay Martin who threw it.”

“They’ve gotta address it in the offseason,” Aikman added.

ESPN’s rules analyst Russell Yurk concurred that no flag should have been thrown on the play.

After the game, Texans coach DeMeco Ryans suggested his team expected the Chiefs to benefit from the officiating: “We knew going into today it was us versus everybody. And when I say everybody, it’s everybody.”

Yurk also disagreed with a roughing-the-passer flag on Texans pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. in the first quarter that erased a three-and-out by Kansas City, which went on to score a field goal on that drive: “It looked like that first contact was to the upper chest area. I didn’t see anything there that supported a foul,” Yurk said.

Martin, the referee, told a pool reporter after the game that on the Anderson penalty, “I had forcible contact the facemask area,” and on the To’oTo’o infraction, when the quarterback slides, “he is considered defenseless. The onus is on the defender. I had forcible contact there to the hairline, to the helmet.”

Walt Anderson, longtime NFL senior vice president of officiating who moved into a new role as the league’s rules analyst and club communications liaison last year, said Sunday that&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/TomPelissero/status/1881034642842857714" target="_blank">both calls were correct</a>&nbsp;under the current rules.

Anderson said in an appearance Sunday on the NFL Network that it might be up for debate about whether there was forcible contact on the roughing-the-passer flag in the first quarter but emphasized that the league’s rulebook calls for officials to throw the flag if there’s any doubt whether roughing has occurred.

As for the second foul, where Mahomes slid late, Anderson said the two Texans defenders who crashed into each other made incidental contact with Mahomes once he was on the ground, so replay assist couldn’t be used in that circumstance to pick up the flag.

Anderson noted that the league’s competition committee could revisit either infraction and tweak the rules this offseason.

Aikman, for one, would like to see the league crack down on flopping, as well.

Kansas State forward Ayoka Lee will be sidelined indefinitely after an X-ray and MRI exam revealed the All-American fractured a bone in her foot in the second quarter of the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/ap-top-25-womens-college-basketball-poll">No. 10</a>&nbsp;Wildcats’&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/arizona-state-kansas-state-score-9dd812c75d1e801072ee17f55468bd8b">win over Arizona State</a>.

The school called it “probable” that Lee will return before the end of the season, but more will be known in the coming weeks.

“It’s not good,” Kansas State coach Jeff Mittie said after the 81-69 win Sunday over Arizona State. “It’s not going to be a week or two.”

Lee only played 13 minutes in the game, leaving for good with 4:21 left in the first half.

The Wildcats, who do not play again until visiting Colorado on Saturday, entered the week 19-1 and 7-0 in the Big 12, and they are riding a 14-game win streak, the fourth-longest in Division I women’s basketball. The Wildcats’ only loss came against No. 13 Duke in the Ball Dawgs Classic in late November.

Lee is a big reason for their success. The 6-foot-6 forward from Byron, Minnesota, is averaging 16 points on 65.4% shooting, even though she’s played limited minutes because of a number of blowouts. She also is averaging 6.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks.

Lee set the women’s Division I scoring record when she had 61 points against Oklahoma in January 2022. She is already Kansas State’s career scoring leader with 2,482 points, and she holds school records for rebounds, blocks and field goals.

Lee also has had a history of injuries, though. She redshirted as a freshman while recovering from a knee injury, and she missed the entire 2022-23 season&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/sports-manhattan-college-basketball-womens-kansas-d3a64345f3647364b65ddce0bb3b7c02">because of surgery</a>&nbsp;on the other knee. She also sat out several conference games a year ago after&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/ayoka-lee-ankle-injury-kansas-state-87bbcaff2e509fea0da1043076736901">she hurt her ankle</a>, and Mittie has limited her minutes at times this season in an effort to keep her healthy.

The Wildcats will lean more heavily on Missouri State transfer Kennedy Taylor, Imani Lester and Eliza Maupin while Lee is out.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings honored firefighters and first responders in the first game back in their downtown arena since the catastrophic wildfires that devastated large parts of Los Angeles. The Kings were scheduled to face Calgary on Jan. 8, but that game was postponed due to the fires. Los Angeles then played its next five games on the road before returning home. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Kings wore LAFD caps during pregame warmups. Firefighters and first responders from various departments in the region were honored at center ice before the game. The Kings replaced their traditional logo at center ice with a graphic paying tribute to the Los Angeles Fire Department.&nbsp;“To see the guys out there and the gals, it was humbling. I don’t know. I just felt that way,” Kings coach Jim Hiller said about the ceremony. “I felt a little emotional. I just felt like those people have been out there doing some pretty amazing things that we just saw a little bit from a long distance. And we’re in our own little bubble doing what we have to do. It brought it to life for me, pretty personal, and it’s just disappointing we couldn’t do more with it.”
