Thursday on Sports Day(Watch)

Kansas State athletic director Gene Taylor ripped the current state of college athletics for its role in&nbsp;driving Wildcats football coach Chris Klieman into retirement, claiming Wednesday that “there are people with really loud voices right now that are trying to keep this thing from being put in the right place.”

Taylor did not specify who he was talking about, but the longtime executive made it clear the “wild, wild west world” of name, image and likeness payments and the explosion of the transfer portal have caused near-irreparable harm to college sports.

“You just saw one of the greatest guys in this industry walk out of this room and retire from coaching, the business that he loves,” Taylor said, moments after the 58-year-old Klieman — who led Kansas State to a Big 12 championship during his seven years at the school — departed a news conference inside its football complex without taking questions.

“And what really pisses me off,” Taylor continued, “is that he's doing it because of where we are in this industry. If we don't get this thing under control, more really, really good guys like Chris Klieman are going to walk away from this business.”

Klieman did not specifically say that NIL, the transfer portal and related issues played a role in his decision. But many coaches have retired for those reasons, including Villanova basketball coach&nbsp;Jay Wright&nbsp;and Virginia basketball coach&nbsp;Tony Bennett, both of whom have lamented the way they think greed has taken over college athletics.

Taylor and Klieman met Monday, two days after&nbsp;the Wildcats beat Colorado&nbsp;to finish 6-6 and qualify for a bowl game. They discussed his departure during the meeting, and Klieman pondered it for 48 hours before making his final decision Wednesday morning.

At that point, Taylor dashed off a text message to “my colleagues in the Big 12.”

“I said, ‘Coach Klieman, one of the best in the business, just left, and here’s why,'” Taylor said. “And I got a ‘thumbs-up’ from just about everybody in the conference. There are so many moving parts right now, and so many things out there that aren't accurate, and there are people with really loud voices right now that are trying to keep this thing from being put in the right place."

“We all have to come together and speak from the same sheet of music,” he continued, “and right now that's not quite happening, and there are some pretty loud voices out there that are trying to do some things that aren't in the best interest of the industry.”

Coincidentally on Wednesday, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives decided to pull a bill — called the SCORE Act — that had been scheduled for a final vote that the NCAA and Division I conferences have portrayed as placing into law rules created by a&nbsp;multibillion-dollar lawsuit settlement&nbsp;that allowed college athletes to be paid.

The White House and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee support the bill, with the White House saying “action is necessary to provide the stability, fairness and balance that will protect student-athletes and preserve collegiate athletic opportunities.”

One of the bill's critics, Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., has&nbsp;co-sponsored a competing bill, and she called the battle over the SCORE Act “a David and Goliath fight” in which the two biggest conferences, the SEC and Big Ten, would end up with most of the power.

“We have to come together and run the business as equally as we possibly can,” Taylor said Wednesday, “and right now, that's not the case. People are ignoring the settlement. They're doing things outside of the settlement. And we have to get it under control.”

The 68-year-old Taylor, who recently purchased a home in Arizona, admitted that he also has considered retirement. One of the big reasons for sticking around is that Taylor wants to be part of the solution when it comes to straightening out college sports.

“It really hurts me that guys like Chris Klieman are leaving because what they came into the business for is different," he said. “I want to make sure that because of where I am on my experience, I have a chance to sit on some committees now, that I can help make some decisions as an industry that will get us in a place that we'll be better off.”

The 15th-ranked Barton Community College men's basketball team saw a conference win slip away at the horn Wednesday night at Fleske Fieldhouse, as Hutchinson Community College's Lolo Rudolph buried a three-pointer at the buzzer to hand the Cougars a 58–57 loss in Jayhawk Conference action.

Barton controlled much of the night, grinding its way to a 26–20 halftime lead, then opening the second half with a 9–2 surge to match its largest cushion of ten. Hutchinson gradually chipped away, but Barton continued to answer, stretching the margin back to seven with just over eight minutes left and still leading by four with 3:28 to play.

The Blue Dragons continued to grind, taking their first lead at 55–54 with 2:26 remaining. Without a field goal over the final three minutes, Barton connected on 3-of-4 at the charity stripe while Hutchinson came up empty on its ensuing possessions, resulting in the Cougars holding a 57–55 advantage and the ball with twenty-six seconds left. Coming out of their own timeout, the Cougars were unable to get a shot off, turning the ball over with nine ticks left. Hutchinson followed with a timeout, worked the ball around the perimeter, and ultimately found Rudolph on the right wing, where the sophomore drained a contested three as the horn sounded to complete the comeback.

Snapping Barton's eight-game winning streak in the series, the setback drops the Cougars to 3–2 in league and 8–3 overall, while the Blue Dragons improve to 2–3 in conference and 7–4 on the season.

The Cougars will look to rebound on Saturday, hosting Pratt Community College in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Barton finished the night shooting just 28.8% from the floor but stayed in control most of the way behind a 40–28 advantage on the glass and a 16–4 edge in offensive rebounds.

Barton made its strongest push in the third quarter, trimming into the deficit behind a trio of triples from&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wbkb/2025-26/bios/greer_kodi_2zvh">Kodi Greer</a>, but the Blue Dragons countered with timely baskets and a decisive advantage in the paint to keep the Cougars at arm's length the rest of the way.

Hutchinson turned Barton's early miscues into an uphill climb, capitalizing on three Cougar turnovers in the opening two minutes to jump ahead 7–0. The teams traded threes—Moody ending a 3:45 drought with her first triple, followed by a Donanu answer—but after free throws from Eck and Akinde pulled Barton within 12–10 at the 2:20 mark, the Blue Dragons closed the frame on an 8–0 run to take a 20–10 lead into the first break.

More than four minutes came off the clock before either team scored, with Donanu's final three of the night finally breaking the stalemate. Barton twice drew back within single digits—first on&nbsp;Eva Clements' jumper, then on a pair of Donanu free throws—but Hutchinson responded with an 11–0 burst fueled by transition play and perimeter shooting. The Blue Dragons maintained control the rest of the period, taking a 38–19 lead into halftime.

Barton responded out of halftime with its best offensive quarter of the night, shooting 54.7% while leaning on Greer's perimeter touch. Greer opened the half with a three and added another at 7:47 to provide a brief spark, but Hutchinson countered with eight straight points—including a pair of threes—to balloon its lead to 26. Akinde steadied the Cougars with four straight points, and Greer's third triple of the frame trimmed the margin to 55–34 heading to the fourth.

Moody's second trey of the game capped Barton's 8–0 run across quarters and cut the deficit to 18 with 7:15 remaining, the closest the Cougars would come the rest of the way. Hutchinson answered by stretching the margin to its largest at 65–38 with 2:32 left. Barton closed strong, finishing with a Donanu jumper and a driving layup from&nbsp;Christal Long&nbsp;to set the final at 65–42.

The agreement, which took effect this year, ended lengthy negotiations but fell short of team requests. Jenkins argues the deal is unfavorable and feels NASCAR is acting like a monopoly. He made 19 of 25 shots including an incredible 10 of 11 on 3-pointers to finish with a season-high 52 points in a 135-120 victory over the defending Eastern Conference champs.

Now that the rookie No. 1 overall pick is playing alongside the 10-time All-Star again, Dallas hopes they can flourish together. The Mavericks are on their first winning streak of the season. Dallas beat Miami 118-108 for a third consecutive victory. Flagg found himself in the company of LeBron James while Davis was sidelined with a calf strain. Now the Mavs hope Flagg can find life a little easier with Davis. There's the longer-term hope of injured star guard Kyrie Irving returning.

It’s inevitable unless college administrators and football coaches agree to reimagine an imperfect calendar that has been a mess for decades. Under the current format, national signing day happens during conference championship week, the transfer portal opens during the College Football Playoff and some coaches are secretly interviewing for other jobs before Halloween. No one has an ideal solution. Even the thought of adopting an NFL-like format seems flawed.

The changing landscape of college football means the nation’s premier recruits are no longer signing with the same handful of programs. That became particularly apparent this week when the nation’s top-ranked prospect landed in Vanderbilt. Quarterback Jared Curtis decided to stay home after initially committing to Georgia. Curtis’ decision wasn’t an aberration. Two other top-five prospects signed with home-state schools generally unaccustomed to acquiring five-star recruits. Houston got the nation’s No. 3 recruit by signing Keisean Henderson of Legacy the School of Sport Sciences in Spring, Texas. Dylan Strome also scored for Washington. Charlie Lindgren made 23 saves and added his second career assist. Pavol Regenda scored for San Jose, denying Lindgren a shutout. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Matthew Stafford’s 192 career interceptions are the most among active quarterbacks. He has also fumbled 91 times in his 17-year NFL career. So his three crucial turnovers in the Los Angeles Rams’ 31-28 loss to Carolina aren’t going to send Stafford into a funk or a crisis of competence. Stafford knows his two interceptions and a late fumble were the biggest reasons why the Rams lost to the Panthers and fell out of the No. 1 spot in the NFC standings. There’s still nothing he’ll do much differently when he leads Los Angeles to Arizona this weekend.

TOKYO (AP) — The Haas Formula 1 team will get a new name next season, further showcasing its relationship with Japanese automaker Toyota. The team's new name in 2026 will be TGR Haas F1 Team. The TGR stands for Toyota Gazoo Racing which is the racing division of the Toyota Motor Corporation. The partnership includes primarily research, engineering and driver development. Haas and Toyota entered into the first stages of the technical partnership a year ago and the Haas car has been carrying Toyota’s branding since.

Thursday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Kansas State Athletics announced on Wednesday that head football coach Chris Klieman was retiring. Klieman, who has spent seven years with the school and is 58 years old, stated that for the first time, he’s putting his family first and looks forward to spending more time with them moving forward. K-State held a press conference at the Vanier Family Football Complex on Wednesday afternoon where Klieman and Athletics Director Gene Taylor spoke about Klieman’s decision.

A full room of media and K-State staff gave Coach Klieman a round of applause as he made his way to the podium. Klieman began his press conference by thanking everyone for being there. “It just goes to show me that the good guys win,” Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman said. “Doing things the right way, doing it with class and doing it with integrity is the right way. Guys, that’s the K-State way.”

Klieman said despite it being an emotional day, “I am at peace.” He noted that colleagues, former players, and parents of current players reached out to him and congratulated him and his wife, Rhonda. Klieman stated one of the reasons he was in the business of coaching was to have that kind of impact.

Chris Klieman previously served as head coach at North Dakota State before coming to Kansas State to lead the Wildcats. He held many other coaching positions after spending more than thirty years as a coach. “I am one of the lucky ones,” Klieman said. He pointed out that he spent fifteen years at his last two stops and noted that is very rare in the coaching profession. Current Kansas State Athletic Director (AD) Gene Taylor previously served as AD at North Dakota State and was the one who hired Klieman to be a head coach at both schools. Klieman expressed his thanks and gratitude to Taylor at the press conference.

Speaking about his twelve years as a head coach (five at NDSU and seven at K-State), Klieman said, “I am damn proud of the body of work that all of us put together.” He stated that he was up for the challenge of following in the footsteps of legendary K-State coach Bill Snyder, and said, “I think we did a pretty damn good job here.” Klieman closed out the press conference by thanking everyone “for allowing the Kliemans to come into Manhattan and build something here.” As Klieman left the press conference, he and Director of Athletics Gene Taylor shared a hug.

*Highlights for Klieman at K-State include winning the 2022 Big 12 Championship, winning eight or more games for four straight years, and qualifying for a bowl game in six out of seven years. (The only year KSU did not make a bowl game was during the 2020 COVID season.)

K-State Athletic Director Gene Taylor spoke after Klieman officially announced his retirement. Taylor was passionate that changes need to be made in the current era of college athletics. Taylor, a very close friend of Klieman, was very emotional when speaking to the media. “You just saw one of the greatest guys in this industry walk out of this room and retire from coaching, from the business that he loves,” Taylor said. He continued, “What really pisses me off is he is doing it because of where we are in this industry.” Taylor is referring to the new era of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal, among other issues as well. “If we don’t get this thing fixed, and I am a part of that, as is every other AD in the country and conference commissioners, more really, really good guys like Chris Klieman are going to walk away from this business.”

When asked about the timeline of events and when he knew Klieman would retire, Gene Taylor said they met on Monday, where Klieman expressed he needed a few days to think about what he wanted to do. Taylor admitted he was somewhat caught off guard by the retirement talks because he thought they were meeting to discuss the bowl game and potential coaching/staffing changes.

Klieman told Taylor Wednesday morning he was going to retire, and Taylor admitted he had been emotional all day since their discussion. When asked about if Klieman would coach the bowl game, he said it is still being determined. He said he plans to meet with the players on Thursday and discuss it.

Klieman, who has spent seven years with the school and is 58 years old, stated that for the first time, he’s putting his family first and looks forward to spending more time with them moving forward. K-State held a press conference at the Vanier Family Football Complex on Wednesday afternoon where Klieman and Athletics Director Gene Taylor spoke about Klieman’s decision.A full room of media and K-State staff gave Coach Klieman a round of applause as he made his way to the podium. Klieman began his press conference by thanking everyone for being there. “It just goes to show me that the good guys win,” Kansas State head football coach Chris Klieman said. “Doing things the right way, doing it with class and doing it with integrity is the right way. Guys, that’s the K-State way.”Klieman said despite it being an emotional day, “I am at peace.” He noted that colleagues, former players, and parents of current players reached out to him and congratulated him and his wife, Rhonda. Klieman stated one of the reasons he was in the business of coaching was to have that kind of impact.Chris Klieman previously served as head coach at North Dakota State before coming to Kansas State to lead the Wildcats. He held many other coaching positions after spending more than thirty years as a coach. “I am one of the lucky ones,” Klieman said. He pointed out that he spent fifteen years at his last two stops and noted that is very rare in the coaching profession. Current Kansas State Athletic Director (AD) Gene Taylor previously served as AD at North Dakota State and was the one who hired Klieman to be a head coach at both schools. He continued, “What really pisses me off is he is doing it because of where we are in this industry.” Taylor is referring to the new era of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) and the transfer portal, among other issues as well. “If we don’t get this thing fixed, and I am a part of that, as is every other AD in the country and conference commissioners, more really, really good guys like Chris Klieman are going to walk away from this business.”When asked about the timeline of events and when he knew Klieman would retire, Gene Taylor said they met on Monday, where Klieman expressed he needed a few days to think about what he wanted to do. LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — UConn fans had been eagerly anticipating the day Braylon Mullins could truly step onto the court for them.

The five-star freshman rewarded their patience when the Huskies needed it most.

Mullins hit a trio of 3-pointers and scored 17 points, blocked a layup by Kansas guard Jamari McDowell in the closing seconds, then sealed fifth-ranked UConn's 61-56 win over the No. 21 Jayhawks with a pair of clutch free throws Tuesday night.

It was a breakout performance for Mullins, who had been dealing with an ankle injury for most of the season. He had scored just two points while playing a total of 10 minutes in his debut last week, a 74-61 victory over then-No. 13 Illinois at Madison Square Garden.

“There's been a lot of impressive freshman performances. Obviously this is an impressive freshman class,” UConn coach Dan Hurley said. "But the injuries he's had, and his second college game — he put us in position to win this game.

“Obviously this was the first step for him,” Hurley added, “and he's going to make our team better moving forward.”

Hard to imagine that. The Huskies (7-1) already have three wins over ranked opponents this season, and their victory in one of the toughest venues in college basketball came without big man Tarris Reed Jr., who has been dealing with an ankle injury of his own.

Mullins didn't have to do it alone. Solo Ball scored 17 points, keying the comeback from a seven-point deficit in the second half. Eric Reibe added 12 while helping UConn dominate the boards late. And veteran Alex Karaban scored 11 points while wiping away the bitter memories he had of a loss inside Allen Fieldhouse nearly two years ago to the day.

“Having played here before, I kind of knew what to expect,” Karaban said. “This is the hardest place I've ever played in my college career. I knew that going in, and I was mentally prepared for that.”

Mullins had some idea what to expect, too. The guard from Greenfield, Indiana, was heavily recruited by Kansas, and Mullins even had the Jayhawks — along with UConn and several other big-name programs — on his pared-down list of a final 10 suitors.

“Everybody knows he can shoot. I thought he looked athletic,” said Jayhawks coach Bill Self, who was missing his own star freshman, Darryn Peterson, for the seventh straight game because of a lingering hamstring injury. “I thought he played with bounce. He backed us down one time and I don’t know who he shot it over — I think he shot it over 6-10, and it didn’t affect him.”

Mullins was a bit slow off the bench, missing his first 3-point attempt. But he came right back and drilled one two possessions later, then added another later in the first half, before pouring on the offense as the Huskies rallied over the final 20 minutes.

It was a night Mullins will never forget. And one that portends big things for UConn going forward.

“The first four minutes I was in, the nerves were going, just to get my feet wet a little bit,” he admitted, “but as the game went along, just play basketball. At the end of the day, it's a child's game. We got some stuff done and got the win.”

Michigan up to No. 3 in AP Top 25 men's basketball poll, Michigan State and Iowa State into top 10

KANSAS CITY, Mo.
(AP) — Kansas City Chiefs coach Andy Reid sounded downright defiant
Monday when asked about his team's dwindling playoff hopes, which
took a hit not only last week amid a Thanksgiving loss to the Cowboys
but over the weekend when other results didn't go their way.

The reigning AFC
champions are 6-6 with five games remaining, and even if the Chiefs
win them all, they'll still need help to return to the postseason.
Because when the Steelers lost to the Bills on Sunday, that dropped
Kansas City to 10th in the AFC playoff pecking order, thanks in part
to a disappointing 3-4 record against the rest of the conference.

Depending on the
metrics, the Chiefs have a roughly 1-in-3 chance of playing in the
postseason.

“If you're coming
to me,” Reid said Monday, “we're going to go after you every
game, and that's how we roll. We're going to tickle your tonsils on
every play, every game. But that's the attitude we're coming in with,
and then you let the chips fall where they may.”

The Chiefs are third
in the AFC West as they prepare to play the Texans on Sunday night,
and are nearly eliminated from their pursuit of a 10th consecutive
division title. Now, their focus is on extending a playoff streak
that goes back to the 2015 season, the third with Reid as the head
coach, and three full seasons before Patrick Mahomes became the
starting quarterback.

There is reason for
hope: The previous time Kansas City was 6-6 was 2017, and it won its
last four games to earn a wild-card bid.

“Every season is
different,” Reid said. “This is a sport of challenges. That's
what it is. It's probably a microcosm of life as you look at it.
There's always challenges. ... There's such a small margin between
winning and losing that every week is a challenge, a major challenge.
That's how you have to approach it, and you have to be ready for it.”

The biggest
challenges the Chiefs are facing right now are of their own making.
They've been dragged down by penalties and mental mistakes throughout
much of the season, including in their 31-28 loss to the Cowboys,
when a series of flags during the fourth quarter prevented them from
having a chance to pull off a comeback victory.

Kansas City has
allowed the fifth-most penalty yardage in the NFL this season.

“We have to make
sure we take care of business with the penalties, keep working our
fundamentals and techniques,” Reid said. “Not saying I agree with
all of them, or half of them (against Dallas). But they took place.
We're not going to use that as an excuse.”

Nor was Reid willing
to make any excuses for the Kansas City pass rush, which has produced
just 22 sacks this season, a total that is better than just five
other teams. Or a defense that has produced 11 turnovers, a total
better than three other teams.

“You're one or two
plays away and that's what this game is," Reid said. ”You look
at our season, we're one or two plays off, and we take care of that —
whether it's a penalty at a crucial time, a possible turnover
somewhere, or having a chance to create a turnover — we are right
in position where if we can figure out those two, three plays, you
flip this around."

And while Reid
sounded defiant about the Chiefs' playoff peril Monday, he also
understands the reality of the situation.

“You're not going
to hear a lot of positives from the outside coming in,” Reid said,
“so you have to make sure you understand where you really sit, and
the opportunity you have sitting in front of you. You know, there's
still opportunities.”

MANHATTAN, Kansas (AP) — Sam Towns scored a career-high 27 points shooting 9 of 14, and Bowling Green upset Kansas State 82-66 on Monday in a game the Falcons led from the start.

It was Bowling Green's first win over a Power 4 opponent since beating Virginia Tech on the road, 72-71, on Nov. 12, 2005.

Towns, who has played at least a half-dozen college basketball games a season since his career started at Ohio in 2020-21, shot 3 of 5 from 3-point range and made all six of his foul shots.

Javontae Campbell and Javon Ruffin each scored 17 points for the Falcons (6-2). Bowling Green shot 45% (28 of 62) overall and 46% (12 of 26) from 3-point range. Kansas State shot just 26% (6 of 23) from 3.

David Castillo scored 22 points and P.J. Haggerty 17 for the Wildcats (5-3).

Khamari McGriff had a dunk and Haggerty had a layup to bring Kansas State within 33-31 with 5:39 left before halftime. Bowling Green responded by outscoring the Wildcats 16-4 to close the half and went to the break up 49-35.

The Wildcats only got within single digits twice (63-52 with 8:12 left and 63-55 with 7:21 to go) after halftime.

It was the first meeting between the teams.

Bowling Green is off to its best start since beginning the 2020-21 season 9-2.

Bowling Green hosts Utah Valley on Saturday.

Now losers of three straight, Kansas State hosts Seton Hall on Saturday.
