In the quiet and serene western Kansas town of Bazine, life inside one household was ironically defined for years by anxious unpredictability. Nine‑year‑old Alex, diagnosed with autism, has long struggled with behaviors that have overwhelmed classrooms, teachers, and even entire school systems. His mother, Mahria, remembers the phone calls, the shortened school days, the tears — hers and even some of the educators – trying to figure out how to help her son.

Even after transferring to a second school district, the challenges continued to escalate. Staff tried half‑days, adjusted schedules, and maintained constant communication. But Alex continued to elope from classrooms, and rooms were often left in disarray from his behavioral outbursts. One administrator broke down crying on the phone to Mahria, telling her, “He’s running away and I don’t know how to help him.”

Eventually, at the urging of Alex’s therapist, Mahria made the difficult decision to homeschool. For the past three years, she has balanced full‑time parenting, teaching, and her job as a remote dispatcher for a private law enforcement company. Her days are a rotation of school drop‑offs, lessons in reading, math and art, naps squeezed in between shifts, and late‑night work.

“It’s a lot,” she said simply. “But thankfully I can work from home.”

The Road to Aqua The turning point began 2 1/2 years ago, with a search for a service dog to help Alex.

The process was daunting: long waitlists, high fees, and countless organizations to sift through. A stroke of luck came in the form of a neighbor connected to FASDogs, an organization dedicated to providing quality service dogs to assist families dealing with issues related to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and other related diagnoses like autism. The neighbor put her in touch with Krista LaRocque, service dog trainer for FASDogs, who also lives in the community.

Alex was screened for his preferences, and Mahria began fundraising to cover the costs — more than $8,000 for a training dog, plus deposits, application fees, travel to Topeka, and the week‑long training required for families. Add in crates, vests, leashes, and harnesses, and the total climbed even higher.

“It was a struggle to get where we are,” said Mahria, “but definitely worth it.”

Alex and Aqua After seeing Alex interact with other service dogs and an initial attempt to match a puppy with Alex, LaRocque brought a 3-year-old Golden Pyrenees named Aqua to Alex’s therapy session. The bond between boy and dog was immediate.

“They were instant buddies,” Mahria said. “Even the service dog people were surprised because they don’t usually see them sync up that quickly.”

During previous visits, other dogs didn’t connect with Alex at all. But with Aqua, he stayed for an hour and a half on the first visit. Alex and Mahria returned several more times to make sure it wasn’t a fluke. It wasn’t.

From that first meeting to Aqua’s trial placement in the home, nearly a year passed. Training was extensive: pressure therapy, co‑handling sessions, and specialized work with multiple trainers. Aqua officially graduated training in early August last year, but he had already been living with the family since May.

A Calmer Home — and a Calmer Child The changes were noticeable almost immediately.

“His therapist has seen it too,” Mahria said about Alex’s progress. “He’s able to regulate quicker. Instead of a room getting destroyed, it’s maybe one or two things that he throws.”

Aqua’s presence has softened the intensity of Alex’s reactions, especially when stimulants trigger sensory overload. What used to be a 70 percent chance of a meltdown is slowly shifting so that the episodes become fewer and with less intensity.

Those who try sternness with Alex only escalate the situation, Mahria explained. Calm works better. She said that Aqua embodies that calm.

Still, the work continues. Aqua must be trained daily, rewarded intentionally, and not treated as a family pet, but as a working partner.

“We have to keep training him at home,” she said. “He has to earn things. We can’t give treats all the time. And we can take him through a refresher course, if needed.”

A Community Effort The journey that eventually led to Aqua wasn’t one the family made alone. More than $8,000 was needed to bring a trained service dog to Alex. Funding came together after Mahria’s tax refund along with a combination of other funding sources. Mahria credits her daughter Nadia’s school, the local 4H Club, and neighbors for stepping up when the family needed financial help to cover the cost. Rosewood Services and its Roots &amp; Wings Foundation also helped in a major way with funding and support, she said.

“I can’t say it enough — thank you, thank you, thank you so much to everyone for helping us make this possible,” said Mahria.

A New Chapter Today, Aqua has been fully certified and working with Alex for nearly six months, though he’s been part of the household since last spring.

“I’ve seen improvement, definitely since Aqua has been in our house,” Mahria said with relief in her voice. “It was a long process, but it was worth every bit of it.”

The bond between her boy and his service dog is offering stability, hope, and the promise of calmer days ahead.

Finding calm in chaos: Service dog helps bring stability to Bazine boy and his family

The people of Great Bend have asked questions. Jason Kuilan
wants to provide some answers. The director of Great Bend Economic Development
again provided updates to the Great Bend City Council during Monday’s meeting. He
announced a pair of upcoming question-and-answer sessions to further educate
area business owners and the public about Eco Devo’s mission.

“I just want to announce and reiterate that we’re holding a
public forum on Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. this week, open to Chamber members only,”
he said. “Next week, on Feb. 11, we’re going to be hosting the same forum from 5-7
p.m. at Dry Lake (Brewing). Again, it’s just to answer any questions anybody
has on the Innovation Center and explain what it is, as well as provide more
information on Economic Development, the multiple subcommittees we have, the
multiple programs we have.”

Previous Eco Devo leadership had pledged to give city
council members financial reports each quarter. After a lapse, Kuilan was able
to send out reports last Friday. As for the Innovation Center on 10th Street, Kuilan said work
continues to finalize winterization of the building, but good news may be on
the horizon.

“We’re having conversations with a lot of businesses and
individuals here locally to help close that funding gap,” Kuilan said. “Those conversations
have been going pretty well. I’m hoping in the next week or two, I’ll have some
pretty big announcements on the funding of the Innovation Center moving forward,
which will be a really big deal for us, and I think that will also open the doors
for funding to finish the Innovation Center itself.”

The Great Bend High School forensics and debate team opened its season with an outstanding weekend on Saturday, Jan. 31, earning top finishes, a sweepstakes championship, and multiple state qualifications.

On Friday, seven Panthers competed at the first Congressional Debate tournament of the season in Newton. Junior Parker Coleman captured first place in the Varsity House, while senior Zach Hart earned a fifth-place finish.

The team continued its success Saturday in Garden City at the first forensics tournament of the year, where Great Bend claimed the first-place sweepstakes trophy. Fifteen of the Panther’s 23 entries advanced to finals, with particularly strong performances across the public speaking events.

Original Oratory saw multiple Panthers on the awards stage, with junior Kendra Scheideman earning first place, Coleman finishing second, junior Kyra Lewis placing third, and freshman Ethan Harrington taking fourth.

In Informative Speaking, Coleman earned first place, followed by Hart in third and junior Hunter McClanahan in fifth. Coleman also claimed first place in Extemporaneous Speaking, while McClanahan finished fifth in Extemp.

Scheideman added another top finish by earning first place in Program of Oral Interpretation. In Impromptu Speaking, Hart placed second, Scheideman finished third, sophomore Samantha Negaard earned fourth, and junior Kaitlyn Froetschner placed fifth. Negaard also earned third place in Dramatic Interpretation.

In addition to the medalists, first-year competitors Jaaziel Hernandez and Addie Hart contributed valuable sweepstakes points, helping secure the team’s overall victory.

All first- and second-place finishes qualified for the Kansas State Speech and Drama Championships, giving the Panthers six state qualifications after just the opening weekend of competition.

“This weekend exemplifies why I am so proud of each of these students,” head coach Kim Heath said. “They competed with confidence, supported one another, and represented Great Bend with pride.”

Assistant coach Pamela Williams highlighted the team’s depth and growth. “Our success came from contributions across multiple events and grade levels,” Williams said. “It was exciting to see both experienced competitors and newcomers make an impact.”

The Panthers will continue their season this week with a Congressional Debate tournament in Sedgwick on Friday, followed by a forensics tournament in Sterling on Saturday.

Panther Forensics brings home first place from Garden City

Near-month, light sweet NYMEX crude dropped 21 cents on Friday to close the day at $65.21 per barrel, a weekly gain of more than four dollars and only the second daily settlement over $65 since October. Prices on Monday were four percent lower in New York and London. NYMEX crude was trading a few cents over $62 a barrel. Brent crude in London was just over $66.Kansas Common crude starts the week and the month of February at $55.50 per barrel after dropping a quarter per barrel Friday. The monthly average price at CHS in McPherson rises above $50 for only the second time since October, at $50.28 per barrel for the month of January.

Kansas regulators report 42 new intent-to-drill notices in January, compared to 65 in January of last year, and 74 in January of the year before that. The Kansas Corporation Commission Web site lists one new intent-to-drill notice in Rooks County, one in Finney County and one in Gove County. Kansas regulators approved just one permit in Western Kansas this week, in Lane County. There are 21 new drilling permits in eastern Kansas, including eighteen from the same producer and contractor in Bourbon County. That's 40 permits statewide so far this year.

Operators completed nine wells across the state this week, with four in Western Kansas, including one in Rooks County and one in Gove County.Independent Oil and Gas Service notes 65 new completion reports statewide year-to-date. Just 31 wells have been drilled from spud to full depth so far this year, down from 71 a year ago.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one in eastern Kansas at seven rigs, and unchanged west of Wichita at six. The total is down 13 percent from a month ago, and down 17 percent from a year ago. On Friday drilling was underway on one lease in Gove County, and one in Rooks County, and about to begin on a second lease in Rooks County.

The Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes is 546 drilling rigs, unchanged at 411 oil rigs, but up three gas rigs for the week. The total is down 36 rigs from the report at the end of January last year. The rig count in Texas drops to 220 rigs, down three from last week and down 51 rigs from a year ago.&nbsp; Baker Hughes reports Oklahoma was up three rigs.

The US has now raised $1.3 BILLION dollars buying and selling strategic crude-oil stockpiles. Inventories, and profits, rise at the Strategic Petroleum Reserves in Louisiana, up half a million barrels to 415 million this week. That's nearly 50 Million refill barrels, sold for $95 per barrel, and then refilled for about $68. By selling high and buying low, the US Treasury has saved $1.3 BILLION at the SPR since April of 2024.

Commercial crude oil stockpiles dropped by more than two million barrels to just under 424 Million as of Jan. 23. The Energy Information Administration says stockpiles are about three percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

The government reports domestics crude production is down 36,000 barrels a day from a week ago to just under 13.7 million barrels a day. That's the lowest weekly average since last November. The Energy Information Administration says the four-week average drops below 13.8 million barrels per day.

EIA reported increasing stockpiles of both regular gasoline and diesel, and demand for each lagging behind last year at this time. Fuel stockpiles are five percent above the five-year average for this time of year.US crude-oil imports dropped more than 800-thousand barrels a day to 5.6 million. The four week average is just under 6.4 million barrels a day. That's down 57-thousand daily barrels, or about one percent from a year ago.Crude oil exports jumped more than 24 percent, leaping 900-thousand barrels a day to nearly 4.6 million. The four-week average is up nearly half a million to just over 4.2 million barrels a day. Exports reached a four-month high, topping 4.5 million barrels a day for only the fourth time in the last year.

The amount of sanctioned crude oil believed to be at sea, and in fact adrift, is now well over one BILLION barrels. Now that India is stepping back from Russian crude-oil deliveries, an increasing amount Russian crude oil remains adrift, adding to a growing global problem stemming from sanctions against several countries. According to Bloomberg, Russia shipped more than three million barrels a day in the last four weeks, but India is now refusing delivery. That's adding to the more than one billion barrels of sanctioned crude oil already at sea without destination.

Speaking of at-sea-without-destination, two shadow-fleet tankers were literally adrift following similar mechanical breakdowns in the Mediterranean Sea. Media in Europe report two fully-laden crude tankers appear to be floating at very slow speeds without clear guidance or destination. One of them is located north of Algeria and the other near Gibraltar.

The oil majors operating a huge oil field in Kazakhstan lost an international arbitration case, leaving them liable for billions in compensation to that country’s government. Bloomberg reports a preliminary judgment of four billion dollars, calling it a partial victory for Kazakhstan, which was claiming more than $6 billion. The government said, and the tribunal agreed, that the firms collected for unapproved or unrecoverable cost overruns.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Stafford County Economic Development will host a Grant Writing Class on Friday, Feb. 13 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Stafford County Annex. This class is aimed at helping nonprofits and community organizations strengthen their fundraising strategies and improve grant success. This will be lead by Executive Director Ryan Russell.

The workshop will guide participants through how to focus organizational goals, identify appropriate funding opportunities, and understand what funders are looking for in a strong proposal. Attendees will gain practical insight into building a funding strategy, avoiding common grant-writing pitfalls, and clearly communicating project impact.

“This class is designed to help organizations feel more confident and intentional about pursuing not only grants, but to have an overall financial strategy for their organization,” said Russell. “Many groups have strong missions but struggle with where to start. This workshop will provide tools to help turn good ideas into competitive proposals.”

The event is open to nonprofits and community-focused organizations. Those from Stafford County are free while those coming from outside Stafford County should be prepared to pay $30. There will be a light lunch provided. The event will be held from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at the Stafford County Annex at 210 E. 3rd Ave., St. John, KS 67576.

Myles Hamit in Mrs. Westerhaus' class at Jefferson Elementary, was presented a giant $100 check as the last January weekly winner in Eagle Media's Make a Difference Contest, presented by OPI and Golden Belt Printing.&nbsp;

"I can make a difference by being nice to people even if they aren't my friend," Myles said.

All Barton County students, grades K-6, are eligible for the Make a Difference Contest, which will run for the duration of the 2025-26 school year. As a weekly winner, Myles and his teacher were eligible for the monthly prize. Eisenhower fifth grader Treacyn Williams claimed the January monthly prize of another $100 and a bookbag filled with swag from other contest sponsors. Treacyn's teacher, Miss Maneth, also won $100 in the monthly contest.

drought monitor as of Tuesday, January 27th indicates little change from last
week.&nbsp; Compared to the last few years we
are in good shape.&nbsp; The six to ten day
forecast (February 3rd to 7th) indicates a 40 to 50%
chance of leaning above normal for temperatures and a 33 to 40% chance of
leaning below normal for precipitation.&nbsp;
The eight to fourteen day forecast indicates (February 5th to
11th) indicates a 40 to 60% chance of above normal temperatures and
a continued 33 to 40% chance of leaning below normal for precipitation.Tomorrow
is February 1st.&nbsp; Even though
we have finally experienced winter the last two weeks, days are becoming longer
and warmer.&nbsp; We will likely have a chance
for another cold snap or two and typically our heaviest snows are in April or
even early March.&nbsp; However, wheat will
break dormancy and resume growth.&nbsp; It’s
now time for wheat producers to put their crop in the best position to optimize
yields.&nbsp; So, what needs to be done?·&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; First,

Mark Twain may or may not have uttered some variance of that expression, but Holy Family School Principal Debbie Hagans definitely lives it. Hagans recently earned $500 as the January winner of Eagle Media's School Hero Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing.

"Mrs. Hagans is always going above and beyond for all students, from standing outside in the freezing cold, to rain, and even 110 degrees out just to greet each student every day, and welcome them with a fist bump and wish them a great day," said Hagans' nominator. "She does a whole lot for the students, and we think she deserves to be recognized for all she does for our families."

The School Hero Contest is for any school employee who goes above and beyond in his or her job. Administrators, teachers, paras, coaches, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, and more are all eligible. A new School Hero will be selected on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and that hero will be recognized with $500 in prize money.

Holy Family Principal Debbie Hagans selected as January's 'School Hero'

Wednesday morning, shortly before noon, officers with the Great Bend Police Department were advised of a hit and run accident which occurred in the 1000 block of Washington St. It was reported the vehicle that fled was a red Jeep Liberty with front end damage. 

While on patrol, a deputy with the Barton County Sheriff's Office observed a vehicle matching that description at Casey's General Store, 1315 10th&nbsp;St.&nbsp; Officers arrived and began speaking with the occupants of the vehicle, identified as Jessy Eilers, 44, and Jessica Love, 42. While speaking with Eilers and Love, Barton County Sheriff's Office K9 REM was deployed for a free-air sniff of the vehicle. After a positive alert, officers conducted a search of the vehicle. Officers located methamphetamine, marijuana and drug paraphernalia.&nbsp; 

Eilers was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Driving while Suspended and Duty to Give Information after an Accident. Love was arrested for Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interference with Law Enforcement.&nbsp;

Thursday night, just after 9:30 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 3500 block of 10th St. for a traffic infraction. Contact was made with the driver, Tricia Viegra, 54, and a passenger Roy Robinson, 48. During the stop, K9 NEO was deployed for a free-air sniff of the vehicle, subsequently indicating to the odor of narcotics. Methamphetamine and Drug Paraphernalia were located on Viegra, and Robinson was found to be in Possession of Marijuana. 

Viegra was arrested for Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and traffic charges. Viegra and Robinson were both transported to the Barton County Jail and booked in lieu of bond.

Great Bend police make four drug-related arrests after hit-and-run, traffic stop

That spirit was on full display through Travel 389, an initiative that brought the Barton County Commission out from behind their desks and into the communities they serve. Commissioners traveled all over the county to sit down with residents, business owners, agricultural producers, and entrepreneurs. These were not formal meetings or scripted presentations. They were honest conversations about where Barton County is today and where it can go next.

What the Commission heard was both encouraging and energizing. After visiting more than 40 local businesses and listening to the perspectives of over 100 taxpayers, the Commission came away with upward of 120 ideas for local improvement. From small towns to businesses with regional and national reach, one theme rose above the rest: people care deeply about Barton County, and they want to see it grow in ways that strengthen opportunity while preserving its character.

Travel 389 was never intended to be a one-time effort. It was a commitment to listening first and leading second. The conversations reinforced the importance of encouraging development, supporting local enterprise, and keeping decision-making rooted in the realities of the communities it impacts.

That same mindset continues to guide the work of the Barton County Commission. A more strategic, project-based approach to economic development funding has helped ensure investments benefit communities across the county. Collaborative revitalization efforts in Claflin, Ellinwood, Hoisington, and Great Bend reflect a shared belief that strong Main Streets and thriving local businesses are essential to long-term success.

The Commission’s focus remains firmly on the future. Investments in infrastructure, housing, transportation planning, and essential services are being made with the understanding that today’s decisions shape tomorrow’s opportunities. These efforts are not about quick wins; they are about building a county where families, businesses, and communities can continue to thrive.

Power Of Us: How Barton County is building its future--together

Two weeks ago, the Great Bend City Council changed its
meeting time from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. Monday night, the
council will vote on another temporary change. The second meeting of February
is scheduled for Feb. 16, which happens to be President’s Day. If approved, the
meeting would be moved to Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 5:30 p.m.

Also during the Feb. 2 meeting, the council will hear more
updates from Great Bend Economic Director Jason Kuilan. The body will also vote
on a proposed $178,000 elevated tower project at the Airport Industrial Complex,
and vote on the purchase of a 2019 dump truck for $49,999.

Finally, the council will consider the sale of the lot just
north of 2321 Prairie Rose Drive, one of three remaining vacant residential
lots in the Amber Meadows Subdivision. Jerome Koett has expressed interest in
purchasing the lot, and city staff has recommended the sale for $15,000.

During this week’s meeting, the Barton County Commission highlighted the continued work of the County’s Employee Engagement Committee, an initiative focused on strengthening workplace culture, employee satisfaction, and long-term retention.

Judith Castro, President of the Employee Engagement Committee, appeared before the Commission to request an extension of current committee members’ terms and to add a new member to the group. The Commission approved extending the terms of existing members and welcomed the addition of Lindsey Creamer as a fifth committee member.

The Employee Engagement Committee was established to support Barton County employees by developing short- and long-term goals aimed at improving morale, fostering connection and making Barton County an even better place to work. Committee members volunteer additional time outside of their regular duties to identify opportunities that enhance the employee experience across departments. 

Commissioners expressed appreciation for the committee’s dedication and praised its members for stepping up to invest in Barton County’s workforce. The committee’s efforts reflect the County’s broader commitment to valuing its employees and creating a positive, supportive work environment. 

With the Commission’s continued support, the Employee Engagement Committee will carry its work and ongoing projects forward.&nbsp;&nbsp;

WICHITA – A federal grand jury in Wichita returned an indictment charging a Kansas woman with illegally taking controlled substances from her employer’s inventory, according to the United State's Attorney.

According to court documents, Janice Mae Brown, 39, of Russell was indicted on one count of acquiring a controlled substance by deception.

Beginning at a date unknown and continuing through March 2025, Brown is accused of using her position as a pharmacy technician to remove amphetamine (Adderall) and methylphenidate (Ritalin) from a pharmacy without proper authorization.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is investigating the case.

Technician from Russell accused of stealing controlled substances from pharmacy

During this week’s meeting, the Barton County Commission reviewed a request for a conditional land-use permit related to the construction of a new communications tower west of Hoisington.

Barton County Environmental Manager Judy Goreham explained that the proposal involves a 410-foot guyed communications tower to be located approximately two miles west of Hoisington, on land owned by the Loretta Tindall Agricultural Trust. The site was selected due to its location, lack of nearby residences, and suitability for supporting expanded communication coverage.
