The Facts… •Having hypertension increases the risk for heart disease and stroke, which are leading causes of death in the United States.

•Nearly half of adults in the United States (47%, or 116 million) have hypertension.

•Only about 1 in 4 adults (24%) with hypertension have their condition under control.

*Many people have high blood pressure and don’t know it.

To address hypertension in Kansas, K-State Extension is bringing the Hypertension Awareness and Prevention program (HAPp) to Ellis and Barton County. HAPp is a four-month self-monitoring blood pressure (SMBP) program that will provide participants with:

· A FREE validated blood pressure monitor.

· An opportunity to meet with a trained HAPp Coach twice a month to help take and track blood pressure.

· Monthly nutrition education workshops.

· Stress management and healthy lifestyle strategies.

There are no requirements to participate. There is strong evidence that suggests that participants who engage in SMBP along with clinical or community support can lower their high blood pressure.

This year we have Dr. Travis Haneke, Cardiologist, joining us for the Kick-Off meeting. He will be a great resource for people wanting to learn more about blood pressure, how it works, and how they can maintain healthy blood pressure.

What to expect during the program: •Participants are expected to attend the Kick-Off meeting on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm in either Great Bend (Barton Co Health Department, 1300 Kansas Ave.) or Hays (Cottonwood Extension Office, 601 Main St., back meeting room).

•Participants are expected to measure their blood pressure at home at least twice per month (February – May).

•Participants are expected to attend office hours to discuss SMBP readings and healthy lifestyle strategies twice per month (February – May). Office hours will be scheduled after the Kick- Off meeting.

•Participants are highly encouraged to attend nutrition education workshops once per month (February-May).

January is School Board Appreciation Month, a time to recognize the dedication and service of the locally elected USD 428 Board of Education members who help guide the future of education in the Great Bend community.

The Great Bend USD 428 Board of Education include Jacquie Disque, President (2018-2029); Aaron Emerson, Vice-President (2020-2027); Karen Lindberg (2024-2027); Sarah Schenek (2026-2029); Barb Thoren (2026-2029); Randy Wetzel (2024-2027); and Sara Williams (2024-2027). The district also recognizes two members who recently completed their service at the end of 2025: Deanna Essmiller, who served since 2018, and Chad Burroughs, who served since 2022.

“Serving on a school board requires time, thought, and a genuine commitment to students,” said USD 428 Superintendent Khris Thexton. “Our board members consistently approach their work with care, asking the right questions and keeping student success at the center of every decision.”

School board members volunteer countless hours attending meetings, reviewing data, and shaping policies that support nearly 2,900 students and 700 staff members across 10 district buildings.

United Way of Central Kansas is proud to bring Reality U&nbsp;to Larned, an interactive financial literacy and life skills simulation designed to help students better understand the real-world decisions they will face as adults.

More than 200 eighth- and tenth-grade students&nbsp;from Larned, Pawnee Heights, Kinsley, and Otis-Bison&nbsp;will participate in the program, gaining hands-on experience navigating adulthood at age 26 — from managing finances to understanding community responsibilities and personal well-being.

This year’s Reality U event is presented by Fusion Bank, whose support makes it possible for students to engage in a meaningful, realistic learning experience. Reality U brings real-world financial and life skills to students in Pawnee County

Everybody likes a discount. School districts around the nation benefit from the E-Rate program, officially known as the Schools and Libraries Universal Service Support Program, which provides discounts on telecommunications, internet access, and internet connections utilized by schools and libraries. During Monday's USD 428 Board of Education meeting, Ryan Axman, IT director for the Great Bend district, explained how the program works.

"E-Rate is a federal program that's funded through a tax on phone lines throughout the country, so that's where the funding comes from," he told the board. "If you like being told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it, you'll like E-Rate. It's like doing your taxes: it's very detail-oriented. You have to do exactly what they tell you to do."

For those efforts, the district receives funding for 80 percent of the costs associated with its wide-area network, 5G internet access, network switches, and access points. Axman explained the rate is based on the district's free and reduced-lunch program, with discounts offered between 50 and 90 percent. USD 428 receives an 80-percent discount. The board approved 2026-27 funding for $99,359, with savings of $397,437. The district's configuration allows all buildings to benefit from the program.

"Our internet access comes to the district office and is funneled out to all the buildings," Axman said. "That's what enables the district office to be part of the E-Rate funding, also."

There are plenty of strings attached. To be eligible for E-Rate, districts must monitor and filter every device to ensure students have clean, reliable access to the internet. Districts also have to track all associated equipment for five years and keep those records for 10 years in the event of an audit.

Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (1/12)

In conjunction with its Feb. 11 home basketball games, the Barton Community College Athletic Department will host "Pink Out Night" as part of its annual support of Camp Hope.

To raise funds for the nearby youth camp, the department is selling commemorative Pink Out Night t-shirts, with all proceeds benefiting the Camp Hope initiative.

Last year, Barton Athletics presented a $4,000 donation to Camp Hope representatives for the second consecutive year, fueled by the sale of more than 400 shirts and the generosity of the Cougar community.

Held each June at the College's Camp Aldrich, the week-long camp is offered by KyMel, Inc. and provides a free, traditional summer camp experience for children who have, or have had, cancer. Camp Hope's mission is to create a normal, active, and safe environment where campers can celebrate life with, through, and beyond a cancer diagnosis.

Having supported the initiative for many years, Barton Athletics requests t-shirt preorders by January 19 in preparation for the fundraiser. Each donor will also receive two complimentary general-admission tickets for the Cougars' home basketball game against Fort Hays Tech Northwest on Wednesday, February 11. A donation check will be presented to Camp Hope representatives at halftime of the men's contest.

T-shirt pricing is $17 for youth small through adult extra-large, $20 for double extra-large, and $23 for triple extra-large.

Young dancers will again have their time to shine via the Barton Community College Kid's Dance Clinic. The fun-filled day begins with the clinic, then the dancers will perform at halftime of that evening's Barton vs. Coffeyville men's basketball game.

All dancers from preschool through eighth grade may register for the clinic, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Kirkman Building on the BCC campus. Registration is $20 per dance and includes a t-shirt.&nbsp;

Kansas crude prices post mixed messages, up two dollars on the week, but still hovering near five-year lows.&nbsp; Kansas crude prices spiked on Friday to post a two-dollar weekly gain. Kansas Common starts the week at $49.25 per barrel.&nbsp; Prices at CHS in McPherson dipped to five-year lows below $50, and stayed there, beginning in mid-November. Crude futures prices in New York also posted two percent gains Friday.&nbsp;

Year-end analysis by The Energy Information Administration shows global prices dropping from a monthly average of $79 per barrel in January to a low of $63 per barrel in December. That's the lowest monthly average for Brent crude since early 2021. The annual average last year was just $69 a barrel, which is the lowest since 2020. EIA estimates global production outpaced consumption all year, prompting one of the biggest inventory build-ups in 25 years.

Operators in Kansas drilled 781 wells to total depth last year, down 587 wells or 43% from the year before. Independent Oil and Gas Service reported Overall oilfield activity dropped 37%, and the number of active operators to drill a well was 189, down from 258 the year before. Operators here completed 18 wells this week including one wildcat well, and one service well in Ellis County.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service lists 14 active drilling rigs. Seven are east of Wichita, which is up two, and seven are in Western Kansas, which is down two. The statewide tally is down more than six percent from last month, and 22 percent lower than a year ago. Drilling was underway or about to begin on a lease in Russell County.

At 544 active rigs, the weekly Rotary Rig Count from Baker Hughes drops by three oil rigs and one gas rig. Louisiana is down three rigs for the week; Utah is up four. Wyoming is down one; Colorado is up one.&nbsp; Texas, New Mexico and North Dakota each drop by one rig.

Over the long haul, the top three producers are reporting production increases despite declining rig counts. Texas is down 52 rigs from a year ago. North Dakota is down by ten rigs from the same week last year. New Mexico is down just three rigs, year-over-year. A few states are posting year-over-year increases. Louisiana is up ten rigs from a year ago. Utah is up six rigs. Ohio posts an increase of five rigs over last year.US crude-oil production drops slightly this week but remains over 13.8 million.&nbsp; Production is a quarter million daily barrels higher than the same week last year.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration reports the four-week average is also over 13.8 million barrels per day.

Commercial crude oil inventories (excluding those in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve) decreased by 3.8 million barrels from the previous week. At 419.1 million barrels, U.S. crude oil inventories are about 3% below the five year average for this time of year.

The government adds another 200,000 barrels to the Strategic Petroleum Reserves, which now total more than 413 million barrels. That's an increase of nearly 20 million barrels or five percent in the last year.

USD 428 Board of Education agenda (Jan. 12)

Sunday morning, just before 2 a.m. an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 2000 Block of Heizer Street, Great Bend. Contact was made with the driver and multiple occupants of the vehicle. 

During the stop, K9 NEO was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle, subsequently indicating to the odor of narcotics. The back seat passenger, Christopher Hutchins-Hernandez, 31, was found to have marijuana on his person. Hutchins-Hernandez was arrested for Distribution of Methamphetamine, Possession of Marijuana, Criminal Possession of a Firearm, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia,&nbsp; Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Stolen Property, and No Drug Tax Stamp. He was booked into the Barton County Detention Center in lieu of Bond.

Contact was made with the driver and multiple occupants of the vehicle. During the stop, K9 NEO was deployed for a free air sniff of the vehicle, subsequently indicating to the odor of narcotics. The back seat passenger, Christopher Hutchins-Hernandez, 31, was found to have marijuana on his person. Barton County Sheriff's Office Booking activity (1/9-1/11)

School counselors have long played a role in the lives of the students and staff around them. Less often, they win $500 in recognition of those efforts. Cayla Robison, a school counselor for Central Plains Elementary School, recently earned $500 in Eagle Media's School Hero Contest, presented by OPI &amp; Golden Belt Printing.

"Kayla is very considerate and passionate mother, friend, and counselor," said Robison's nomination form. "She is always there to listen and help with problems. She is also very considerate of privacy, and she is an amazing person."

The School Hero Contest is for any school employee who goes above and beyond in his or her job. Administrators, teachers, paras, coaches, maintenance staff, cafeteria workers, and more are all eligible. A new School Hero will be selected on the fourth Tuesday of each month, and that hero will be recognized with $500 in prize money.
