Equipment Technologies, manufacturer of Apache Sprayers, presented Simpson Farm Enterprises (SFE) with the prestigious Dealer of the Year award during its annual Dealer Meeting—marking the ninth time SFE has earned the honor.

This award recognizes the dealership that not only leads in new Apache Sprayer sales but also upholds outstanding customer service standards. Simpson Farm Enterprises, with locations across Kansas including Great Bend, continues to set the bar for excellence in both performance and customer satisfaction.

In a historic moment at this year’s meeting, SFE was also presented with the inaugural Jim Bates Legacy Award, honoring dealerships that have sold over 1,000 new Apache Sprayers. Hutchinson Community College (HutchCC) and Barton Community College have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) establishing a new partnership aimed at expanding access to respiratory care education and addressing a growing workforce need in central Kansas.

Through this agreement, students from Barton will complete their general education requirements at Barton and then have the opportunity to transition into HutchCC’s Respiratory Care Program. The partnership was developed in response to an increased demand for respiratory care professionals in Barton’s service area, which includes nine regional hospitals."

This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to meeting the healthcare workforce needs of our communities," said Dr. Tricia Paramore, President of Hutchinson Community College. "By working together, we are creating clearer pathways for students and helping ensure that Kansas hospitals have access to the skilled respiratory therapists they urgently need."

Variety selection is one of the most important decisions that a grower can make to ensure success on their farm. Now is the time when wheat producers across Kansas are reviewing yield data and making decisions about the varieties they will plant in the fall. Although yield is always a top priority, disease, and insect resistance, along with appropriate agronomic traits, can buffer against crop losses. In addition, genetic resistance to diseases and insect pests can be the most effective, economical, and environmentally sound method for control.

The Kansas Wheat Variety Guide 2025 from K-State Extension, will soon be released. Agronomic characteristics, disease, and pest resistance information are included, as well as profiles that highlight some more common or new varieties for the state of Kansas.

Ratings in this publication represent results from field and greenhouse evaluations by public and private wheat breeders and researchers at multiple locations over multiple years.

A few other resources available to assist farmers with wheat variety selection is the Kansas Wheat Variety Performance Tests that are conducted around the state at K-State Experiment Stations and in other locations. These variety performance tests are replicated, each variety is randomly planted in four different locations in the field to increase accuracy of the yield data. That information along with all the other resources referenced in this article can be accessed from our Cottonwood Extension District web site at www.cottonwood.ksu.edu click onto the Crops and Livestock tab and look under Hot Topics for any of these resources.

The Wheat Trials Database decision tool provides complete access to variety information and data from university variety trials in Colorado and several other Great Plains states including Kansas. The database also includes private company trial data (Limagrain Cereal Seeds, Syngenta-Agripro). The database may be used to find up-to-date wheat variety information, display data from individual trial locations, generate summaries across multiple trial locations and years, and generate head-to-head comparisons for varieties of interest. It is an easy tool to use and very helpful!

CAMPBELL: Kansas Wheat Variety Guide and Selection

With the recent rainfall across Central Kansas, the mosquitoes are stealing most of the headlines. But a quieter pest is gaining strength beneath your feet. Alicia Boor, agriculture and natural resources agent in the Cottonwood District for K-State Extension, said past and current weather conditions have contributed to healthy weeds.

"If you've had thinner lawns due to the drought from the previous years, it's really allowing the weeds that are coming up to take hold and get ahead of what your regular lawn would look like," she said. "That's just because they take advantage of sparser areas or lawns that are not really thick and healthy."

Weeds can always be pulled but more general control of the plants may be difficult right now.

"A lot of the weeds we're seeing right now are almost too big and strong to try and control," Boor said. "You'd either want to notice where they are, know what they are, and put down pre-emergents in the spring, or spot treat them when they're smaller next year."

Knowing which weeds need controlled is important as not all plants are treated the same. Boor said homeowners can snap a clear photo of a weed and email it to aboor@ksu.edu. Extension staff can provide instructions on how and when to control that particular weed. Extension can also mail or email a publication on weed identification and control.

As with many situations, prevention also goes a long way. Boor said that starts with a thick and healthy lawn. Knowing when to fertilize is crucial.

"Coming up in September is the best time to fertilize your cool-season lawns, which would be your fescue and bluegrass. If you have Bermuda, it's getting to be too late. You may be able to get one last application on, but it's almost too late. You want to fertilize when it's actively growing."

Just five days left to become an instant finalist in Reef Blue Summer

BARTON COUNTY —Law enforcement is investigating a suspect on multiple allegations after a standoff in Great Bend.

Just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, police were dispatched to a residence located at 217 Pine Street in Great Bend in reference to a domestic disturbance, according to a media release.

 Officers were advised that the suspect, 34-year-old Robert C. Amador, was damaging property inside the residence and making threats to harm others with a homemade hatchet. 

 Upon officers’ arrival, they were able to safely get two other occupants of the home out safely. Robert Amador barricaded himself inside the residence and refused to come out.  Officers tried talking Amador out of the residence for approximately an hour and fifteen minutes and were unable to get him to cooperate.

Amador was transported to the Barton County Detention Center where he was booked on requested charges of Aggravated Assault Domestic Violence and Felony Obstruction.

Kansas wheat producers depend on USDA programs every year, but how those programs are delivered can make the difference between smooth support and frustrating delays. Last year's big summer finale hardly felt like summer. This year's Party in the Park in Great Bend should be a little warmer. Forecasts indicate highs near the century mark this Saturday. Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Amanda Gaddis said conditions should be great for the Kiwanis Wet-Dry Parade that runs through Veterans Memorial Park beginning at 10 a.m.

"That's the part of the parade where you can either stay on the east side of the railroad tracks and stay dry, or you can go to the other side, and it's like a big water fight over there."

The Oozefest Mud Volleyball tournament returns to Veterans Park this year with a 9 a.m. start. Near those same mud pits, Midwest Elite Wrestling also returns. The wrestlers will host a meet-and-greet from noon to 1 p.m., then take part in a Nerf war from 1-2 p.m. The Rumble in the Park is scheduled from 2-5 p.m.

Wristbands for the three concerts Saturday night are $5 in advance and $10 at the gate - cash only this year. Savanna Chestnut, a native of Valley Falls north of Topeka, opens the shows.

"Savanna Chestnut, she is from season 20 of 'The Voice," Gaddis said. "She was on Blake Shelton's team. She'll be kicking the night off at 6:30. We have a Queen tribute band who will be out there at 8, then Homebrew brings it home at 10 p.m."

The full day of events includes a vendor fair from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Optimist Kids Fun Zone from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Shifters Car Show from noon to 5 p.m., and a cornhole tournament at Al Burns Field. Registration for that competition begins at 5:15 p.m., with action to follow at 6.

Great Bend's 2025 Party in the Park has something for everyone

Madison Hanzlick became acquainted with Heart of Kansas Family Health Care while she was completing her clinicals at the agency’s facilities in Stafford, St. John and Larned.

Today, she is a full-time nurse practitioner serving patients at the Great Bend and St. John clinics.

“When I was doing my clinicals here, I really enjoyed being part of the mission and vision of Heart of Kansas,” Hanzlick said. “I am grateful to be part of this organization, which provides affordable healthcare and helps patients manage their health issues.”

As a Hoisington native, Hanzlick also is “excited to be back close to home and serving patients in this area. I have been interested in rural healthcare ever since I started studying and working in this field. I look forward to serving communities in Heart of Kansas clinics.”

As a family nurse practitioner, Hanzlick’s services include preventive medicine; well-visits for all ages; women’s health; pediatrics; chronic-care management for conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure; and others.

While Hanzlick has been in her new position for just a short time, she is impressed with the personnel and services at Heart of Kansas.

“The staff has been very welcoming and I quickly learned they are willing to jump in and help,” Hanzlick commented. “I am also impressed with the array of services, patient-assistance program, and the experience and expertise of the other providers.”

After graduating from Hoisington High School in 2017, Hanzlick earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2020 and her doctorate in family nursing practice this year, both at Fort Hays State University.

Previous employers include McPherson Center for Health, Hays Medical Center and Clara Barton Hospital.

Hanzlick recently moved back to Hoisington with her husband, who is a public lands manager at Cheyenne Bottoms.

Brett Middleton, Heart of Kansas chief executive officer, is “really thankful that Madison has returned to serve patients in our clinics. We learned about her skills and knowledge during her clinicals and knew she would be a great addition to our full-time staff.

Hoisington's Hanzlick returns home to care for Heart of Kansas patients

 What started as a shared dream is now rising from the ground—literally. Great Bend Recreation Commission Foundation is proud to announce its long-anticipated community basketball court is well on its way to completion. The concrete has been poured and is in a 30-day curing period prior to the application of the surface and lines. More information on the Grand Opening to come.

This court is more than just a place to play. It’s a safe space for kids to grow, athletes to thrive, and neighbors to come together to make memories. It also has updated adjustable side goals on the existing court, baseball/softball fields, and updated sand volleyball pit to complete the park.

GBRC has a long history of Morning and Noon Basketball Members that have been involved with basketball over the years. Their generosity, encouragement, and belief in this project have brought the community to this exciting moment. From the first conversations to the pouring of the concrete, every contribution—big or small—has helped turn vision into action. These basketball players still enjoy playing currently and are always looking for new players.

Five Barton County Youth Crew members recently attended the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) Mid-Year Training Institute in Nashville, Tenn.

For the students, it was an opportunity to connect with peers from across the country and learn how to better promote healthy life choices, said Tyler Morton, a prevention advocate with 20th Judicial District Juvenile Services.

“They did a lot of learning there,” Morton said. “I think they did a great job.”

Morton and Nichelle Holinde, a parent and stakeholder with the Youth Crew, detailed the trip to the Barton County Commission on Tuesday morning. The two traveled with five youths, who also shared their experiences.

Attending the training were: Branson Holinde, a ninth grader at Great Bend High School; Brooklyn Cooley, a 10th grader at Great Bend High School; Mya Brewer, an eighth grader at Hoisington Middle School; Janey Weber, an eighth grader at Great Bend Middle School; and Matilda Philbern, a ninth grader at Great Bend High School.

For two of the students, it was their first time attending the training. Morton said they were willing to jump in and “get out of their comfort zones” during a week filled with note-taking and interacting with the 2,000 attendees.

For the other three, it was their second time at the conference. “We got a lot of compliments on them. They did an awesome job,” Morton said.

“They have a lot going for them,” Holinde said of the returning students. “It is a good group.”

Morton said the CADCA trip allows Youth Crew members to “dive deeper into the purpose of our coalition.” The all-expenses-paid trip provides a venue for youth from across the country to meet, discuss prevention work and learn from leaders in the field.

Brewer, a second-year attendee, said she learned that making communities safer requires everyone's involvement. “They all play a role. All parts are important. Our job [as Youth Crew] is to raise awareness.”

The students tackled challenging topics, from social media pressures to suicide and drug use. They said it all starts with getting the right people together.

“I’m so proud of this group,” District 5 Commissioner Donna Zimmerman said. “You guys are amazing kids.”

District 3 Commissioner Shawn Hutchinson told the students they now have a “big responsibility” to share what they learned and “that’s part of being a leader.”

The Youth Crew is a youth-led task force for ages 12 to 19 that helps create healthy habits at home and in the community. Morton said the goal is to have an active roster of participants who regularly attend meetings and help plan events. The group meets monthly to discuss core values, expectations and upcoming projects.

Barton County youth attend anti-drug conference in Tennessee

Everyone wants a place to call “home,” but being able to use that term hasn’t been easy for some people in western Kansas.

Tiger Media Network’s documentary, “The Cost of a Dream,” explores housing concerns in Hays through the eyes of local residents, city officials and community leaders. TMN is the student-produced convergent media hub at Fort Hays State University.

Produced by TMN’s summer internship team of Kyson Evans, Katie Kuhlman and Taylor Thompson, the documentary sheds light on the challenges of finding affordable, family-friendly housing.

The film offers an in-depth look at how housing insecurity affects cities like Hays, contributing to a rise in housing instability and even homelessness for working families, single parents and vulnerable populations. It also examines potential solutions and efforts being made to address the issues.

“Coming from the capital city of Topeka, city development isn’t something you often think about — it just happens around you,” Evans said. “But in a smaller town like Hays, you really see how interconnected everything is. Everyone is part of a larger web, working toward the same goal. That kind of collaboration was something special and worth documenting.”

Working on the summer project gave the producers a new perspective on how deeply housing issues affect entire communities — not just individuals.

“This documentary is important to me because it helps bring awareness to the housing issues that often go unnoticed,” Thompson said. “By sharing these stories, we hope to start conversations and inspire real change in communities like Hays.”

Evans and Thompson had prior experience with documentary filmmaking from the Advanced Video course at FHSU, but this was the first project of this scale for the group.

“Overall, this was a one-of-a-kind experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone,” Kuhlman said. “It allowed me to try something completely new and explore a different direction in my career that I hadn’t considered before.” “The Cost of a Dream” will premiere at 6 p.m. Aug. 7, on the Tiger Media Network YouTube channel.

The documentary is the third long-form feature produced by TMN summer interns during the last three summers.

“This year’s summer documentary is a bit different than the last two,” said Nick Schwien, director of Tiger Media Network. “This one is a bit more localized and focuses on an issue that is relevant to many in Hays. Through the roughly eight weeks of work, the students conducted multiple interviews and worked as a team in a real-world environment. Our ability to provide learning opportunities like these have helped students stand out in the job market when applying for employment after graduation. Kyson, Katie and Taylor took on a tough topic and worked hard to produce a quality product.”

GBHS grad part of new documentary about housing concerns in Hays

After nearly nine days closed due to severe storm damage, Kelly’s Garden Sense Greenhouse is open again—and celebrating with a major Storm Sale to thank the community that helped make a quick recovery possible.

The July storm tore the roof from the main retail greenhouse, damaged pottery, destroyed countless plants, and left a big mess behind. But with the support of friends, family, and local businesses, Kelly’s Garden Sense reopened on July 31 and is now back to serving customers during summer hours: Monday–Friday 7 a.m.– 2 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.– 1 p.m.

“From lending equipment to bringing lunch and sweet treats, this community wrapped its arms around us,” said owner Kelly Meyer-Moeder. “We are beyond grateful for every single person who stepped in to help us get back on our feet.”

Kelly’s Garden Sense extends heartfelt thanks to Mark Guthrie of Guthrie Signs for providing a 60-ft boom truck, Paul Pack for donating a bucket truck for Kelly’s husband Paul Moeder to use, Howard Meyer (Kelly’s father) for the scissors lift, her father-in-law for the extension ladder, and to Ellen Mermis and Allie Cartwright, and her Freaking Delicious Cheesecakes and cookies, for bringing food and treats to keep spirits high.

Kelly’s Garden Sense reopens after storm; thanks community with big savings

Blue-green algae blooms are an issue that usually occurs during the spring and summer. Calm, sunny, dry, and hot days of summer create ideal conditions for blue-green algae to thrive in our livestock ponds. Blue-green algae occurrence is sporadic making its threat unpredictable. Despite its name, these blooms are not algae, but a cyanobacteria. Some of these cyanobacteria can produce and release dangerous toxins that are of major concern for our livestock.

These “cyanotoxins” typically show up as either neurotoxins, or hepatotoxins which means they can damage the nervous system or the liver function of animals. Typically, the first clinical sign noticed in pasture cattle that have consumed neurotoxins are dead cattle. If found early enough, cattle may have muscle tremors, difficulty breathing, seizures, slobbering, and diarrhea. Hepatotoxins can cause an acute death similar to neurotoxins or lead to delayed issues with liver failure. An example of this would be weight loss and photosensitization, which can be recognized by severe sun burns on areas of the body not covered with hair. Since there are several causes of acute death in pasture cattle, contact your local veterinarian for diagnosis. Unfortunately, there are no known antidotes to these cyanotoxins. So, understanding what to look for, and avoiding livestock exposure is important.

Blue-green algae blooms float at or just below the surface of the water. The appearance almost looks like paint in the water. Once the cyanobacteria die, it turns a blue color. The color can also vary to a grey to almost a red or brown color as well. Toxin concentrations in affected water can vary drastically. The wind can move these blooms and concentrate them in certain areas along the shorelines of ponds. These concentrations increase the lethality of the toxic blooms.

Preventing exposure to blue-green algae toxins is very important during the summer months. There are some options for livestock producers if blue-green algae is suspected or has been identified. Of course, fencing off natural water sources and providing alternative water sources is the best option (well water, hauled water), but is typically financially limiting. Fencing off certain areas of the ponds (downwind portion of ponds) may help limit exposure. Improved&nbsp;watering areas, such as pipe-fed waterers, may also limit exposure as long as the water inlet is located in a low-risk area of the pond. A submerged inlet in the center of the pond is an area where the cyanobacteria are unlikely to concentrate. Improved water sources like this will also help increase other water quality attributes. Controlled access and tank waterers decrease sediment, nutrients and fecal coliform bacteria from building up in the water source. 

Treatment of the water source with copper sulfate has historically been recommended. However, the copper accumulates in the pond, leading to other potential problems with plants and animals alike and is not recommended. Barley straw is also often discussed as a control measure. While the mechanism is unknown, barley straw may help reduce new blooms from forming but do not directly kill active blooms.

Monitoring of stock ponds during the summer months and having a plan in place to combat blue-green algae will help ensure the health and wellbeing of our herds. Water samples can be sent to the Kansas State Veterinary Diagnostic Lab:

Most abatement projects within the Great Bend city limits pertain to unsafe properties. Monday night, the city council took a small departure from the norm to address an unsightly vehicle on the west side of town. City Administrator Logan Burns laid out the issue to the voting body before approval of a resolution that will allow the city to remove the vehicle at 5825 Birchwood Drive.

To help address what was termed a big issue, Barton County has been awarded a $239,138 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop a county-wide transportation plan.

The grant, a fiscal year 2025 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant, was awarded to the Barton County Health Department for the Barton County Accessible Public Transportation (BCAPT) Planning Project.

Karen Winkelman, the county health director, announced the grant to the county commission Tuesday morning. The two-year grant period is set to begin on Oct. 1, 2025, and will conclude on Sept. 30, 2027.

“The grant funds will be used to develop a master transportation plan for the entire county through a community engagement process that will include surveys, focus groups and community events,” Winkelman said.

According to Winkelman, transportation was one of the top three priorities identified in each community, alongside food insecurity and mental health awareness.The grant funds will be used to hire a rural public transportation consultant, who will assist the county in developing a request for proposals and a community engagement process. The project will also revisit and update a Chronic Diseases Reduction Grant-funded 2016 bicycle and pedestrian master plan that was never implemented due to a lack of funding.The grant is a reimbursement grant, meaning the county will incur expenses and then be reimbursed by the federal government. The budget will support the hiring of the consultant, a portion of the salaries for two health department staff members, and contracting supplies.The grant agreement is not yet finalized. A planned kickoff meeting with the U.S. Department of Transportation was canceled and has not yet been rescheduled. The County Commission directed its chairman to approve the grant award, subject to a review of the final agreement by County Counselor Patrick Hoffman.“I do think transportation is a very big issue,” said Commission Chairman Tricia Schlessiger, District 4. It is even a concern in smaller communities like Ellinwood.“This will involve a lot of community engagement” with all segments of the population, Winkelman said. “Community engagement is the key. We can go out there and say what we think is needed, but it's the community members who are experiencing the gaps so we need their voices heard.”Winkelman noted the grant does not require the county to provide matching funds.About Barton County Located in Central Kansas, Barton County lives by its motto of investing in growth.
