The Gifting Forward Foundation is once again spreading holiday cheer through its&nbsp;second annual 12 Days of Gifting&nbsp;campaign, awarding&nbsp;$1,000 each day&nbsp;to 12 nonprofit organizations that provide essential services across the region.

New this year, the Foundation expanded the campaign to include nonprofit organizations serving&nbsp;Atwood and Wichita, reflecting its deepening commitment to the communities where its affiliated financial planning firm,&nbsp;Legacy Financial Solutions, maintains offices. Legacy Financial Solutions serves clients through locations in&nbsp;Great Bend, Atwood, and Wichita, and the Foundation’s expanded reach mirrors those strong community connections.

This year’s campaign was launched with renewed purpose, as many nonprofits continue to feel the effects of recent government funding disruptions caused by the government shutdown. With delayed or reduced funding and increasing community needs, these organizations have stepped up to ensure vital services remain available.

Founded in 2020 during the height of the pandemic, the Gifting Forward Foundation was established to empower individuals and organizations to support causes most meaningful to them. Since then, the Foundation has grown to more than half a million dollars in assets and over ten million dollars pledged, continuing its mission to “gift it forward” through unrestricted and impactful giving.

Over the 12 business days leading up to Christmas Eve, a new nonprofit recipient was announced daily through local radio stations, highlighting the important and often behind-the-scenes work being done across the communities served.

The&nbsp;2025 12 Days of Gifting recipients&nbsp;include: Community Food Bank of Barton County, Rawlins County Dental Clinic, Core Communities Great Bend, Rawlins County Hospital Foundation, CASA, Core Communities Atwood, Family Crisis Center, First Christian Church Children’s Education, USD 428 Education Foundation, Great Bend Economic Development, Ronald McDonald House Wichita, and ElderCare Barton County Meals on Wheels.

The smell of oven-fresh bread and the conversations around it have defined Cindy Falk’s career for 40 years. As she retires from Kansas Wheat, Falk leaves behind a legacy built on education, outreach and a strong connection between Kansas wheat farmers and the consumers who use their product.

Falk began working with the Kansas Wheat Commission in 1985 when she received a phone call, asking her to become a volunteer Speak for Wheat spokesperson. That role grew into a full-time career focused on promoting wheat foods, home baking and science-based nutrition through classrooms, fairs, test kitchens and national organizations.

A central part of Falk’s work was the Kansas Wheat Commission recipe booklet. Beginning in 1988, she contributed to 37 editions, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1966. The booklets became a widely recognized Kansas Wheat resource, distributed across Kansas and nationally to represent wheat farmers and Kansas agriculture.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed this job, or I wouldn’t have continued for 40 years,” Falk said. “That one phone call truly changed my life.”

In addition to her work in Kansas, Falk played a major role in domestic wheat promotion through her leadership with the Wheat Foods Council. As public perceptions of grain foods shifted and fad diets gained attention, her priority continued to be science-based education and accurate nutrition information.

Raised on her grandparents’ wheat farm near Laclede, Kan., Falk brought a personal understanding of agriculture to every outreach effort. Whether working the Kansas State Fair booth or welcoming international visitors into the test kitchen, her goal was to help consumers better understand where wheat comes from.

“Consumers want to hear from the wheat farmer,” Falk said. “People like to ask questions and learn directly from the people involved.”

One of Falk’s most visible accomplishments was helping grow the Kansas Festival of Breads into the National Festival of Breads. What began as a state baking contest evolved into the nation’s only amateur yeast bread competition, drawing hundreds of entries from nearly every state and thousands of attendees during its in-person years in Manhattan.&nbsp;

The event paired baking with education, giving finalists the opportunity to tour wheat farms, ride in combines during harvest and visit mills and elevators. Those experiences helped turn bakers into ambassadors for wheat and Kansas agriculture. The contest has continued as a fully remote baking competition. Participants submit recipes via email, and recipe testing and judging are conducted at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center in Manhattan, Kan.&nbsp;

As Falk enters retirement, she plans to spend more time with family, travel and continue teaching baking and food skills in her community. While her role with Kansas Wheat is ending, her connection to the wheat industry remains strong.

Wheat Scoop: Cindy Falk - A lifetime of service defined by wheat

For the fifth consecutive year, the Great Bend High School debate team has qualified for the Kansas State High School Activities Association 5A State Debate Championship. The Panthers earned their state berth by finishing runner-up at the four-speaker Regional Debate Tournament held Saturday, Dec. 20, in Salina.

A four-speaker tournament differs from traditional debate competitions, where students debate both sides of the resolution, explained GBHS debate coach Kim Heath. In the four-speaker format, each school fields a team of four debaters. Two of the debaters compete on the affirmative side and two debate only the negative side of the resolution. Individual records are then combined to determine the team’s overall standing.

“The four-speaker format really emphasizes depth, preparation, and teamwork,” Heath said. “Each debater has a very specific role, and everyone’s performance matters.” It is much more of a squad effort than any other type of debate competition.

The regional tournament was conducted in a round-robin format. Both Great Bend and Topeka Seaman finished the day with identical 6–2 records, but Topeka Seaman captured one additional ballot, securing the regional championship and edging Great Bend into the runner-up position.

Leading the Panthers on the affirmative side were freshmen Ethan Harrington and Jaaziel Hernandez, who went undefeated throughout the tournament. Sophomore Mark Sperlein and junior Hunter McClanahan represented GBHS on the negative side, defeating all opponents except the affirmative teams from Topeka Seaman and Shawnee Heights. Freshmen Holly Ann Luttrell and Nevaeh Nagel served as alternates, while senior Zachary Hart provided research support for the squad.

Heath praised the entire team’s preparation leading up to the event. “The fact that our younger debaters stepped up and earned spots on the regional lineup says a lot about the future of Panther debate,” she said. “At the same time, this was absolutely a team effort. Other debaters contributed research on current events, helped refine arguments, and provided practice rounds that were critical to our success.”

Heath also credited assistant coach Pamela Williams for the team’s continued momentum. “With Dan and I recovering from a car accident, Ms. Williams has stepped up in a tremendous way,” Heath said. “She kept the team motivated, organized, and focused on improving together. Her leadership made a real difference.”

Three 5A regional tournaments were held across Kansas last weekend, with the top three teams from each advancing to the State Tournament in January. The 5A and 6A State Debate Championships will be held Jan. 15–17 at the University of Kansas. Great Bend will compete against Topeka Seaman, Shawnee Heights, Goddard Eisenhower, Hutchinson, Newton, St. James Academy, Sumner Academy, and Blue Valley Southwest.

In addition to the four-speaker team, three two-speaker teams will also represent GBHS at the state tournament. The teams of Rhys Froetschner and Diana Stoddard, Zach Hart and Parker Coleman, and Kendra Schneideman and Ella Nokes all qualified earlier in the season.

“The state tournament marks the end of a long and demanding season,” Heath said. “Beyond wins and losses, our students have gained a deep understanding of U.S. leadership, global politics, and how federal policy is shaped through this year’s Arctic topic.”

Coleman and Hart Named First Alternates for Policy Debate Nationals Parker Coleman and Zachary Hart competed at the West Kansas National Speech and Debate Association District Tournament held Dec. 12–13 in Hays. The duo advanced to the final round before falling to Hutchinson, one of the district’s national qualifying teams. As a result, Coleman and Hart were named first alternates for the National Speech and Debate Association Policy Debate Tournament.

“This was a huge accomplishment,” Heath said. “Reaching the final round at districts shows how competitive Parker and Zach are and the work they have put in to improving.”

The national tournament will be held this summer in Richmond, Virginia. Additional opportunities to qualify for national competition will be available later in the spring, particularly in speech events.

Panther Debaters Place Second at Clay Center Invitational Great Bend debaters also brought home second-place sweepstakes honors at the Clay Center Debate Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Freshman Ethan Harrington and sophomore Ella Nokes went undefeated, winning all four rounds to claim the Junior Varsity championship. Jaaziel Hernandez and Aubrey Lewis placed sixth in Junior Varsity, followed closely by Mark Sperlein and RJ Calvert in seventh. In the novice division, Holly Ann Luttrell and Nevaeh Nagel earned a third-place finish. Hunter McClanahan, Tyler Scheuerman, Parker Coleman, and Zachary Hart rounded out the sweepstakes team in the varsity division.

The debaters are currently enjoying a holiday break and will return to competition in January for Novice State on Jan. 9–10, followed by the KSHSAA State Debate Tournament on Jan. 15–17.

The duo advanced to the final round before falling to Hutchinson, one of the district’s national qualifying teams. As a result, Coleman and Hart were named first alternates for the National Speech and Debate Association Policy Debate Tournament.“This was a huge accomplishment,” Heath said. “Reaching the final round at districts shows how competitive Parker and Zach are and the work they have put in to improving.”The national tournament will be held this summer in Richmond, Virginia. Jaaziel Hernandez and Aubrey Lewis placed sixth in Junior Varsity, followed closely by Mark Sperlein and RJ Calvert in seventh. 1. Turn It in to Mulch Most natural Christmas trees can be chipped into mulch, which is excellent for garden beds and pathways. If you have access to a chipper, you can do this yourself. Otherwise, check with your local recycling center or municipal services—many communities offer free tree chipping programs.

2. Create Habitat for Wildlife Place your tree in your yard or garden to create shelter for birds and small animals during the winter months. You can even decorate it with birdseed ornaments, suet, or peanut butter-coated pinecones to provide food for wildlife.

3. Compost the Greenery Cut branches and greenery can be added to your compost pile or used as a base layer. The needles are rich in carbon and can help balance the compost's nitrogen content. Keep in mind that large branches should be trimmed down for easier decomposition.

4. Protect Your Plants Lay trimmed branches over perennial beds to help insulate them during the cold months. The branches can act as a natural mulch, protecting plants from harsh winter temperatures.

The holiday season is a favorite for many. For many others, Christmas can be difficult. Whether it's missing a loved one at the dinner table, having a room full of family members with differing viewpoints, or worrying about the cost to feed those family members, the holiday season brings with it its own set of stressors. Dr. Patrick Stang with the Center for Counseling in Great Bend appeared on 1590 KVGB/95.5 FM's "Center for Counseling" program Monday morning to talk about some ways to combat that added stress. He said talking about someone who has passed may be less stressful than the regret that comes when that person feels forgotten.

"Telling interesting or funny stories about the person who passed, interesting anecdotes, things they did around the holidays or in their life," he said. "It's one way to ease into it and talk about that person without doing it in a morose way, so people get their feelings out and talk about them and feel like they remembered and honored that person."

Having a house full of guests, even family members, is often stressful. For those worried about the extra costs of buying gifts, more food, or even getting regular chores completed, Stang suggests simply asking for help.

"Ask them for some help," he said. "A lot of people are glad to help. They want to help. They feel more useful, like they've contributed to the dinner, presents, or decorating by being involved with it. Sometimes people hesitate to ask."

Naturally, it's not always that easy. The holidays are filled with tradition, and Stang said a balancing act is required when trying to help others.

"Sometimes you have to be a little delicate about how you ask to help because you don't want to put them off because that's their tradition, that's something they want to do, or the way they wrap presents," said Stang.

The good news is the holiday season is temporary. Budget and family stress levels will likely return to normal after Christmas. Stang said other options are available during those stress-filled periods, including more sessions with a therapist or adjustments to medication. Many are affected by seasonal affective disorder during the winter months, resulting in lethargy, poor concentration, and changes in sleep and appetite. Light boxes are more affordable every year, and 15-20 minutes of light therapy in the mornings can make an impact. Stang also emphasized not over-scheduling, maintaining routines, and not over-indulging in alcohol or other mind-altering substances.

STAFFORD COUNTY —One person was injured in an accident just before 9:30a.m. Monday in Stafford County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2017 Jeep Renegade driven by&nbsp; Hayler&nbsp;Volker, 29, St. John,&nbsp;was northbound on southeast 30th Avenue at U.S. 50. The driver failed to stop at the stop sign. The Jeep struck the passenger side of an eastbound 2016 Freightliner semi driven by Jonathan Andrade, 58, Benton, Kentucky.

EMS transported&nbsp;Andrade to the Stafford County Hospital. Volker and a 4-year-old passenger were not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Driver injured after Jeep, semi crash

On Saturday, just after 10 p.m., an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 3600 block of 10th&nbsp;Street for an equipment violation. During this traffic stop, Great Bend K9 Neo was utilized for a free-air sniff of the vehicle. With the assistance of a Barton County Sheriff's deputy, the officer began to conduct a search of the vehicle after a positive alert from K9 Neo. 

While removing the two occupants from the vehicle, the male passenger, Jason Sohm, 46, became confrontational and attempted to flee on foot. Sohm was unsuccessful and was detained by the two officers. During his attempted flight on foot, Sohm received minor injuries and was treated on scene by Great Bend Fire and EMS. 

During the search of the vehicle, a large quantity of a crystal-like substance belonging to Sohm was located. Officers conducted a field test of the substance, which tested positive for Methamphetamine and Fentanyl. Sohm was placed under arrest and transported to the Barton County Jail, where he was booked in lieu of bond for the charges of Possession with Intent to Distribute Fentanyl/Methamphetamine, Felony Interference with Law Enforcement, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and No Drug Tax Stamp. Following the initial investigation, the driver of the vehicle was released at the scene.

Great Bend police make arrest after suspect flees traffic stop

Folks that are not involved in farming may think that farmers own the bulk of the land they use to produce their crops and livestock. The truth is over 50% of Kansas farmland is rented, with many farmers operating a mix of owned and rented land. Very few farms operate exclusively on rented land (less than 10%). These averages reflect the common practice for Kansas farmers to rent land from multiple, often non-farming, landowners to form a complete farming operation.

Why is that you ask? Simply put, land is expensive and to purchase most or all of the land an agricultural producer would need is cost prohibitive. Therefore, many producers lease agricultural land from typically a number of landowners or landlords.

Each year we get a number of questions from landowners and tenants on agricultural land leasing—from average cash rental rates to written lease forms, etc.

The Cottonwood Extension District in Barton and Ellis county which is part of K-State Extension will be hosting two meetings over Farmland Leasing Arrangements on Thursday, January 8, 2026. Stacy Campbell and Alicia Boor will go over the ends and outs of good arrangements. Kay Prather from Kansas Agriculture Mediation will also be in attendance to answer any legal questions you may have over leasing.

High seas tanker-takeovers prompt slightly higher crude prices. Over the weekend the Trump Administration was pursuing a third oil tanker in the ocean near Venezuela amid a blockade of that country. Light sweet crude in New York on Friday closed a half-dollar higher at fifty-six sixty-six ($56.66) per barrel. NYMEX benchmark offers rose two-and-a-half percent on Monday, to trade a few cents shy of $58 a barrel. London Brent was rising toward $62 a barrel at midday Monday.

Kansas crude prices rose a dollar and a half on Friday, but remain two-and-a-half dollars lower than at the first of the month, and more than $13 a barrel lower than a year ago. Kansas Common crude at CHS in McPherson starts the week at $47 a barrel, a low price only achieved twice since 2021.

Kansas is among the ten cheapest states for holiday road trips, but Oklahoma and Colorado have us beat.&nbsp; Automotive fuel demand nationwide is down, and the government reports fuel inventories continue to rise. Last week there were only 13 states with average pump prices over three dollars. The auto club AAA reported a national average of $2.89 for a gallon of regular gasoline Thursday.&nbsp; The cheapest holiday road trip can be found in Oklahoma, where regular gas averaged $2.34 per gallon. Colorado prices average a fraction under $2.50.&nbsp; The Sunflower Statewide average is a fraction over $2.52 a gallon. Your 15-gallon fill-up will cost you about five dollars less than it did during the week before Christmas last year.

As the calendar year wanes, so does oilfield activity. Kansas regulators give their blessing to one new drilling permit this week, in Linn County, the only new drilling location approved statewide. So far this year, there are 636 permits for new drilling locations across Kansas, which is just over half the total reported at this time last year.

Independent Oil and Gas Service reports overall drilling activity trails last year by 38%. Operators completed 13 wells statewide, with three in Western Kansas. Total well completions so far this year trail last year by nearly three hundred wells.&nbsp; More than a thousand completions reported so far this year include 175 dry holes. That's 16 percent, which matches last year.

The Kansas Rig Count from Independent Oil and Gas Service is down one in eastern Kansas at four rigs, and up one at eleven active rigs West of Wichita. The weekly tally is down 12 percent from a month ago and 38 percent from a year ago. Drilling continued Friday on a lease in Gove County.

Baker Hughes reports 542 active on-land drilling rigs as of December 19th, down six rigs from last week. The tally of oil rigs drops by eight. The breakout for horizontal drilling rigs is down by five. Louisiana drops by five; New Mexico is down two. Texas is up two rigs. Colorado and Utah are each down one rig.US crude-oil production surpassed 13.8 million barrels a day for a sixth consecutive week, but dropped ten thousand daily barrels from last week.&nbsp; 

Last week was not the best ever, but updated numbers show last week does rank second best. That makes this week number-three. The Energy Information Administration reports cumulative production, and the four-week average, each now exceed 13.5 million barrels a day. The current spike in US crude production began in November. The report for the week through November 7 reflects an increase of 211,000 daily barrels to the current all-time high over 13.86 million barrels per day. Output has topped 13.8 million each week since.

EIA reports another 200,000 barrels added to the nation's strategic crude reserves, which now top 412 million barrels.&nbsp; Commercial inventories drop by 1.3 million barrels from last week to just over 424 million barrels as of December 12. That's nearly three percent higher than a year ago. The government says stockpiles are about four percent below the five-year average for this time of year.

BP announced a major leadership change, naming Meg O'Neill as the super-major's new chief executive officer, starting this spring. O’Neill is currently CEO at Woodside Energy and worked at ExxonMobil for more than 20 years. She replaces Murray Auchincloss, who stepped down last week, from the CEO's office and the board of directors, after a long-running clash with the Chairman.

After raising its expectations for natural-gas and propane prices...and lowering it's expectations for temperatures, the government now says your heating bills will spike a little more than usual this winter.&nbsp; The Energy Information Administration adjusts its assessment of the marketplace and the forecast each month from October to March. Temperatures this month are now expected to average about eight percent colder than the average of the last ten Decembers. EIA says retail residential natural gas and propane prices have also topped its forecasts. Spot prices for natural gas jumped 30 percent from October to November.

At 6.5 million barrels a day, weekly US crude imports are down slightly from a week ago, slightly more from a year ago, and slightly more than that from two years ago. The four week average is slightly less than 6.5 million, dropping a quarter-million barrels a day or about two percent from a year ago.

Weekly crude exports are up more than 600,000 barrels a day from a week ago at 4.6 million barrels per day.&nbsp; The four-week average is just under four million, an increase of nearly 200,000 barrels a day from a year ago.&nbsp; &nbsp;

The Great Bend Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting on Thursday, Dec. 18, to celebrate the opening of The Velvet Bookmark, a new micro bookstore located inside The Beauty Bar salon at 1409 Main Street.

The Velvet Bookmark is the creation of two friends, Megan Barfield and Shelly Peacock, who share a long-standing love of reading, particularly within the romance genre. Their curated selection features romantasy, cozy reads, and a wide range of romance sub-genres that make up 99 percent of their inventory. The remaining 1 percent is dedicated to a small section of used books, which may be accepted upon review to ensure they align with the store’s niche.

The concept behind the bookstore is rooted in friendship and a shared enthusiasm for storytelling. As the owners describe it, “Two friends. One shared obsession with books. Sharing the books they love.” This phrase, which the pair often reference when talking about their vision, captures the heart of their new venture.

Both Megan and Shelly bring strong ties to the small business community. Shelly owned and operated her own business for several years, while Megan currently serves as the President and CEO of the Great Bend Chamber of Commerce, supporting local businesses in her daily work. Neither plans to leave their current careers, but both saw an opportunity to create a welcoming space for fellow book lovers. Megan, who is on track to read more than 100 books this year, brings her personal passion for reading to the project.

The Velvet Bookmark operates during The Beauty Bar’s regular hours, typically Tuesday through Friday with select Saturdays. The space offers a cozy environment for readers to browse, discover new authors, and connect with others who enjoy the romance genre.

The owners plan to host a themed event once a month to bring fellow book lovers together. Since opening, they have already organized multiple gatherings that have been well attended and warmly received by the community.
